This season is notable for being the only one to use traditional cel animation.
  1. "Help Wanted" / "Reef Blower" / "Tea at the Treedome": In the very first episode, SpongeBob applies for a job at the Krusty Krab. / In a dialogue-less short, SpongeBob uses a reef blower to get rid of a stray shell on his lawn, much to Squidward's dismay. / SpongeBob meets a squirrel named Sandy Cheeks and visits her air-filled treedome, but neglects his need for water.   2. "Bubblestand" / "Ripped Pants": SpongeBob and Patrick blow bubbles, which annoys Squidward. / SpongeBob rips his pants, making everyone laugh. He turns it into an Overly Long Gag, but hits rock bottom after he makes a bad joke, and learns an important lesson in the process. July 17, 1999 (produced in 1998)
  3. "Jellyfishing" / "Plankton!": SpongeBob and Patrick take a paralyzed Squidward jellyfishing, much to his dismay. / Mr. Krabs' business rival Plankton uses a device to control SpongeBob's brain and get the Krabby Patty secret formula. July 31, 1999 (produced in 1998)
  4. "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" / "Boating School": Squidward gets SpongeBob and Patrick to fight, ruining their friendship, but soon SpongeBob and Patrick compete to become his best friend. / After failing his boat driving test for the umpteenth time, SpongeBob beseeches Patrick to help him finally pass his boating test.   5. "Pizza Delivery" / "Home Sweet Pineapple": SpongeBob and Squidward get lost trying to deliver the very first Krusty Krab Pizza. / SpongeBob's house is destroyed by nematodes, and he tries to move in with Patrick and Squidward so he doesn't have to move in with his parents.   6. "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy"/ "Pickles": SpongeBob and Patrick find their favorite superheroes are old and retired, and try to get them out of retirement, much to their dismay. / SpongeBob has an emotional crisis when a picky customer claims he forgot to put pickles on his Krabby Patty, and it's up to Mr. Krabs to help him recover.   7. "Hall Monitor" / "Jellyfish Jam": SpongeBob is made a hall monitor at boating school by Mrs. Puff, and confusing the job for that of a police officer's, lets the power go to his head. / SpongeBob domesticates a jellyfish and has an all-night dance party, one that lasts longer than it has to.   8. "Sandy's Rocket" / "Squeaky Boots": SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally launch Sandy's rocket, and search for aliens on "the moon", which is really Bikini Bottom. / In a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, Mr. Krabs gives SpongeBob a pair of squeaky boots, but the squeaking drives everyone, including Mr. Krabs, crazy.   9. "Nature Pants" / "Opposite Day": SpongeBob decides to live among the jellyfish. Patrick... doesn't take it well. / In a move to sell his house, Squidward convinces SpongeBob and Patrick it's Opposite Day so they'll stay out of the way. September 11, 1999
  10. "Culture Shock" / "F.U.N": The Krusty Krab is short on profits, so Squidward decides to host a talent show in an effort to boost his ego. Of course, he runs into a problem when SpongeBob wants to get involved. / SpongeBob tries to make Plankton less evil by befriending him, much to the dismay of a rather skeptical Mr. Krabs.   11. "MuscleBob BuffPants" / "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost": SpongeBob gets inflatable muscular arms to impress people after chickening out of Sandy's harsh exercise regimen. / SpongeBob and Patrick think they've accidentally killed Squidward after melting a wax sculpture of him, and Squidward takes advantage of it. October 2, 1999
  12. "The Chaperone" / "Employee of the Month": Mr. Krabs has SpongeBob accompany Pearl to her prom. / SpongeBob and Squidward compete for Employee of the Month. A little too much. March 8, 2000 (produced in 1999)
  13. "Scaredy Pants" / "I Was a Teenage Gary": Sick of chronically being scared on Halloween, SpongeBob, with Patrick's help, goes as The Flying Dutchman for Halloween, which angers the actual Flying Dutchman. / Gary becomes ill after Squidward neglects to feed him while SpongeBob is away for the weekend. Squidward accidentally injects SpongeBob with the antidote, and the effects are not pretty. October 28, 1999
  14. "SB-129" / "Karate Choppers": In an attempt to escape SpongeBob and Patrick, Squidward accidentally locks himself in the freezer and ends up frozen for 2,000 years, and relentlessly searches for a way back home. / SpongeBob and Sandy's karate fights get in the way of SpongeBob's work, which causes Mr. Krabs to fire him until Sandy vouches for him. December 31, 1999
  15. "Sleepy Time" / "Suds": SpongeBob flies out of his own dream, and develops the ability to enter the dreams of others. / SpongeBob has the suds, a sponge's version of a cold, and Patrick tries to keep SpongeBob from going to the doctor's before Sandy arrives to take him there.   16. "Valentine's Day" / "The Paper": SpongeBob and Sandy have a huge Valentine's Day surprise for Patrick, but when delays arise, SpongeBob ends up alienating Patrick in an attempt to buy more time. / SpongeBob has tons of fun with a gum wrapper, which makes Squidward jealous. February 14, 2000 (produced in 1999)
  17. "Arrgh!" / "Rock Bottom": Inspired by a board game, Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick go searching for the Flying Dutchman's buried treasure. / SpongeBob and Patrick wind up in the deep sea filled with strange fish and no way home after taking the wrong bus home from Glove World.   18. "Texas" / "Walking Small": Sandy gets homesick for Texas and decides to go home, which SpongeBob and Patrick try to prevent. / Plankton tries to take over a beach to build a new Chum Bucket, and enlists SpongeBob to help. March 22, 2000 (produced in 1999)
  19. "Fools in April" / "Neptune's Spatula": Annoyed by SpongeBob's April Fool's Day pranks, Squidward makes an April Fool's prank that goes way too far, and ends up tarnishing his reputation. / King Neptune refuses to believe that SpongeBob is destined to be a Royal Frycook in Atlantis, and challenges him to a Krabby Patty cook-off.   20. "Hooky" / "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II": Mr. Krabs tries and fails to warn SpongeBob and Patrick about the danger that fishing hooks pose to them, and SpongeBob reaps what he sows when he gets hooked. / SpongeBob wins a conch shell that can summon Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, but when he overdoes it, the two superheroes decide to teach SpongeBob a lesson in crime-fighting and responsibility. Your Shoe's Untied / Squid's Day Off: SpongeBob finds out that he never learned how to tie his shoes, and is desperate to find someone to teach him. / With Mr. Krabs in the hospital, Squidward takes the day off under the guise of doing errands, but becomes paranoid that SpongeBob will destroy the Krusty Krab.   2. Something Smells / Bossy Boots: After eating a rancid sundae, SpongeBob can't figure out why people are running away from him, and Patrick convinces him it's because he's ugly. / Pearl takes over as boss of the Krusty Krab, and overhauls the entire restaurant, much to both SpongeBob and Squidward's dismay. October 20, 2000
  3. Big Pink Loser / Bubble Buddy: Patrick wants to win an award, and emulates SpongeBob to do so, much to his dismay. / With Patrick and Sandy out of town, a bored SpongeBob creates a "bubble buddy", which annoys the townsfolk. February 3, 2001 (produced in 2000)
  4. Dying for Pie / Imitation Krabs: Squidward gives SpongeBob a pie, not knowing it was actually a bomb, and tries to make SpongeBob's last day on Earth his best one yet. / Plankton creates a robotic Mr. Krabs to infiltrate the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob, of course, falls for it, causing a rift between him and the real Mr. Krabs. January 27, 2001 (produced in 2000)
  5. Wormy / Patty Hype: When Sandy goes out of town, SpongeBob and Patrick become terrified of a butterfly, which they believe ate one of her pets, and get the entire town in a mass panic. / With the Krusty Krab losing business, SpongeBob strikes out on his own with colored burgers after Mr. Krabs and Squidward blow him off.   6. Grandma's Kisses / Squidville: SpongeBob is embarrassed of his grandma's affection after being teased by it by Squidward and the citizens, and Patrick tries to help him become tougher. / Squidward moves to a village of like-minded octopi after SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally destroy his house, but he becomes homesick. April 28, 2001 (produced in 2000)
  7. Prehibernation Week / Life of Crime: Sandy takes SpongeBob on a week of adrenaline before she hibernates, which scares SpongeBob witless, causing him to hide. Pantera provides musical accompaniment. / SpongeBob and Patrick go on the run after they "steal" a balloon, but rifts soon open up. May 5, 2001 (produced in 2000)
  8. Christmas Who?: Enamored by Sandy's stories of Christmas on the surface, SpongeBob tries to bring the magic of Christmas to Bikini Bottom, but Santa Claus fails to show. December 7, 2000
  9. Survival of the Idiots / Dumped: SpongeBob and Patrick are locked inside Sandy's wintry tree dome, and attempt to survive the feral Sandy's wrath. / Gary leaves SpongeBob for Patrick, which emotionally devastates him. March 17, 2001 / May 11, 2001 (produced in 2000)
  10. No Free Rides / I'm Your Biggest Fanatic: In an attempt to get SpongeBob out of her hair, Mrs. Puff gives SpongeBob extra credit, along with his boating license, only to regret it later. / Blinded by hero worship, SpongeBob tries to get into the elite Jelly Spotters club, but their leader Kevin treats him like a joke.   11. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III / Squirrel Jokes: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy leave SpongeBob and Patrick in charge of the Mermalair, but they accidentally free Man Ray, one of the deadliest villains the twosome have faced, and attempt to make him good. / SpongeBob makes fun of Sandy in order to become a popular comedian, but the gullible citizens believe the jokes for truth, which frustrates Sandy.   12. Pressure / The Smoking Peanut: SpongeBob and Sandy compete to see if sea or land critters are better, and Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs get involved as well. / On Free Day, SpongeBob feels guilty for making a giant clam cry after he throws a peanut at it, which becomes one story the city will never forget.   13. Shanghaied (aka You Wish) / Gary Takes a Bath: The Flying Dutchman makes SpongeBob and Patrick his slaves, but it's more of a curse than a blessing. Notable for having 3 endings, the official one was voted by fans. / SpongeBob attempts to give Gary a bath. March 9, 2001 / June 17, 2002 (produced in 2000) note 
  14. Welcome to the Chum Bucket / Frankendoodle: Mr. Krabs loses SpongeBob to Plankton in a game of cards, and Plankton spoils SpongeBob in order to get the formula. / SpongeBob creates a monster when he draws a picture of himself using a magic pencil, which he and Patrick must defeat. January 21, 2002 (produced in 2001) note 
  15. The Secret Box / Band Geeks: SpongeBob is desperate to know what's in Patrick's secret box, even at the risk of his friendship with Patrick. / In what is considered the show's greatest episode, Squidward needs to create a marching band in 3 days to show up Squilliam Fancyson, his rival, and hilarity, as well as an awesome musical number, ensues. September 7, 2001
  16. Graveyard Shift / Krusty Love: SpongeBob and Squidward are now working the night shift, and Squidward tells SpongeBob the legend of the Hash-Slinging Slasher, which slowly comes true. / Mr. Krabs falls in love with Mrs. Puff, and has SpongeBob help him on their first date.   17. Procrastination / I'm with Stupid: SpongeBob procrastinates on his boating school essay, which causes him a lot of tribulation. / SpongeBob acts stupid to make Patrick seem smart in comparison to impress Patrick's parents. Unfortunately, Patrick falls for it. October 19, 2001
  18. Sailor Mouth / Artist Unknown: SpongeBob and Patrick learn words called "sentence enhancers", but they later learn that their new "enhancers" are bad words from Mr. Krabs, and try to never say it again. / Squidward teaches SpongeBob about art, which his jealousy later ruins. September 21, 2001
  19. Jellyfish Hunter / The Fry Cook Games: After adding jellyfish jelly to a Krabby Patty, SpongeBob collects jellyfish for Mr. Krabs, who exploits them for money. / SpongeBob and Patrick compete in an Olympic-style fry cook contest, which strains their friendship. Mr. Krabs and Plankton's goading doesn't help. September 28, 2001
  20. Squid on Strike / Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm: Squidward and SpongeBob go on strike to protest Mr. Krabs charging them to work there. / Sandy wants to hunt down an Alaskan Bull Worm, which has been terrorizing Bikini Bottom, but SpongeBob attempts to stop her. All the while, the citizens try to push Bikini Bottom to safety. October 12, 2001

October 5, 2001 - October 11, 2004 (produced 2001 - 2002) 

  1. "The Algae's Always Greener" / "SpongeGuard on Duty": Plankton switches lives with Mr. Krabs just to know what it's like, and discovers he's in way over his head. / SpongeBob pretends to be a lifeguard to impress Larry the Lobster. Trouble arises thanks to Patrick getting a cramp in the water. March 22, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  2. "Club SpongeBob" / "My Pretty Seahorse": Squidward accidentally propels SpongeBob and Patrick's clubhouse into a kelp forest far away from home, and the two beseech the "assistance" of a toy conch, while Squidward tries to escape. / SpongeBob gets a pet seahorse, which follows him to work, and has a bad habit of eating everything in sight. July 12, 2002 (produced in 2001) note 
  3. "The Bully" / "Just One Bite": A new boating school student threatens to kick SpongeBob's butt, and he tries to escape him. / Squidward is in denial about loving Krabby Patties after tasting one, and breaks into the Krusty Krab at night to get more. October 5, 2001
  4. "Nasty Patty" / "Idiot Box": Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob think they've killed a health inspector after believing him to be a fake, and try to hide it from the police. / SpongeBob and Patrick have fun with a mix of their imaginations and a cardboard box, while Squidward hears realistic sounds coming from it. March 1, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  5. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV / Doing Time: SpongeBob accidentally shrinks everyone using Mermaid Man's utility belt, and tries to make them "wumbo" again. / Mrs. Puff goes to jail after SpongeBob accidentally causes a huge wreck. She loves being away from SpongeBob, but he and Patrick try to break her out. January 21, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  6. Snowball Effect / One Krab's Trash: SpongeBob and Patrick have a snowball fight, and end up getting Squidward involved. / Mr. Krabs tries to get a valuable novelty hat back from SpongeBob, and ends up in a swordfight with fish zombies. February 22, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  7. As Seen on TV / Can You Spare a Dime?: SpongeBob gets a very, very, very small part in a commercial, and thinks he's become an overnight celebrity. / Squidward quits working at the Krusty Krab, and SpongeBob takes him in, but unfortunately, Squidward takes advantage of SpongeBob's hospitality, which drives him insane. March 8, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  8. No Weenies Allowed / Squilliam Returns: SpongeBob tries to prove he's tough enough to get into The Salty Spitoon, the roughest, toughest sailor club ever to be built under the Seven Seas. / Squidward lies about owning a 5-star restaurant to impress Squilliam. Things go south when he turns to SpongeBob for help. March 15, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  9. Krab Borg / Rock-a-Bye Bivalve: SpongeBob and Squidward think Mr. Krabs is a robot imposter after SpongeBob becomes frightened by a robot movie. / SpongeBob and Patrick take care of a baby clam, and Patrick gets a case of the lazies. March 29, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  10. Wet Painters / Krusty Krab Training Video: Mr. Krabs hires SpongeBob and Patrick to paint his house, which has pictures covering almost every inch of his walls, and the two uses a paint bubble explosion to finish the job, but his first ever dollar gets in the blast radius, and they try to hide it. / An instructional video for new Krusty Krab employees is shown involving most of the Krusty Crew.   11. Party Pooper Pants: SpongeBob throws a house party, but becomes too rigid in the party structure. It's only when he leaves that the party starts to get good. May 17, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  12. Chocolate with Nuts / Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V: SpongeBob and Patrick become entrepreneurs by selling chocolate door-to-door. / Feeling unappreciated, Barnacle Boy turns evil, and Mermaid Man turns to SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and Squidward to stop him. June 1, 2002 (produced in 2001)
  13. New Student Starfish / Clams: Patrick goes to SpongeBob's boating school, but ends up getting SpongeBob in trouble. / As a celebration for his one millionth dollar, Mr. Krabs takes SpongeBob and Squidward clam fishing, but it gets eaten by a clam, and Mr. Krabs goes insane in an attempt to get it back.   14. Ugh (aka SpongeBob B.C.): The audience takes a look at prehistoric life in Bikini Bottom, involving prehistoric ancestors of SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and to a lesser extent, Mr. Krabs. March 5, 2004 (produced in 2002) note 
  15. The Great Snail Race / Mid-Life Crustacean: SpongeBob pushes Gary too hard to win a snail race in order to show up Squidward. / Feeling old, Mr. Krabs hangs out with SpongeBob and Patrick to make himself feel young. January 24, 2003 (produced in 2002) note 
  16. Born Again Krabs / I Had an Accident: After a near-death experience where Mr. Krabs is punished by the Flying Dutchman for being cheap, he becomes more generous with his money, which doesn't last. / SpongeBob becomes agoraphobic after a sandboarding accident, and Sandy and Patrick try to get him out of the funk.   17. Krabby Land / The Camping Episode: In one of his greediest plans yet, Mr. Krabs constructs a haphazard playground to make money from kids, and promises Krabby the Clown, the playground's mascot, and has SpongeBob stall the kids. / SpongeBob and Patrick go camping in their backyard, and Squidward gets involved, as well as a catchy musical number and an attack from a violent sea-bear.   18. Missing Identity / Plankton's Army: SpongeBob recalls a time where he loses his nametag, and asks Patrick to help him find it. / Plankton enlists his extended family to help him steal the Krabby Patty formula. January 19, 2004 (produced in 2002) note

  1. Fear of a Krabby Patty / Shell of a Man: Plankton (as Dr. Lankton) gives an order of 10,000 Krabby Patties to wear SpongeBob out, and ends up making SpongeBob afraid of Krabby Patties. / Mr. Krabs sheds his shell right before his reunion with his old navy friends, and has SpongeBob fill in for him, as well as have him wear his shell. May 6, 2005 (produced in 2004)
  2. The Lost Mattress / Krabs vs. Plankton: SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward get Mr. Krabs a new mattress, and take his old mattress to the dump, but problems arise when it is revealed that the old mattress has Mr. Krabs' money in it, sending him into a coma, and it's up to SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward to get it back. / Plankton sues Mr. Krabs after falling and faking an injury at the Krusty Krab, and after his defense attorney slips and falls, SpongeBob fills in for him.   3. Have You Seen This Snail?: SpongeBob becomes so obsessed with beating a ping-pong paddle record that he forgets to feed Gary, so Gary runs away and gets adopted by a kindly old lady who's more than she seems, while SpongeBob and Patrick try to find Gary. November 11, 2005 (produced in 2004)
  4. Skill Crane / Good Neighbors: Squidward is desperate to win at the Krusty Krab's new crane, and turns to SpongeBob for help. / SpongeBob and Patrick's attempts to be "good neighbors" ruins Squidward's chances for a relaxing Sunday. May 20, 2005 (produced in 2004)
  5. Selling Out / Funny Pants: Mr. Krabs retires, and a big corporation takes his place and converts the Krusty Krab, much to SpongeBob's dismay. / Squidward, annoyed by SpongeBob's constant laughter, tricks SpongeBob into believing he lost his laugh box, which depresses him. September 23, 2005 / September 30, 2005 (produced in 2004)
  6. Dunces and Dragons: A freak jousting accident sends SpongeBob and Patrick back to medieval times, and they must work with ancestors of Sandy and Squidward to defeat an evil wizard version of Plankton and his massive jellyfish dragon. February 20, 2006 (produced in 2005)
  7. Enemy In-Law / Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture: Plankton starts dating Mr. Krabs' mother in an attempt to acquire the secret formula, much to Mr. Krabs' dismay. / SpongeBob and Patrick are shocked to discover the new Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy movie's lead characters are being played by "actors", and decide to make their own movie starring the real Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.   8. Patrick SmartPants / SquidBob TentaclePants: Patrick suddenly becomes a genius after falling off a cliff and getting his head replaced, which puts rifts in his friendship with SpongeBob. / A malfunction in Sandy's new teleportation machine morphs SpongeBob and Squidward together, and they attempt to cope until she fixes it. October 21, 2005 / November 4, 2005
  9. Krusty Towers / Mrs. Puff, You're Fired: Mr. Krabs converts the Krusty Krab into a hotel, but the only tenant is Patrick, whose ignorance causes Squidward to quit, and check in himself to get back at Mr. Krabs. / After SpongeBob fails his driving test yet again, Mrs. Puff is fired and replaced by a strict drill sergeant. April 1, 2006 (produced in 2005)
  10. Ghost Host / Chimps Ahoy: The Flying Dutchman takes residence in SpongeBob's house after his ship gets wrecked and scares SpongeBob silly, but his scariness wears off, so SpongeBob agrees to help him get it back. / SpongeBob and Patrick must help Sandy build an invention that will impress her bosses, otherwise she will have to leave Bikini Bottom forever. May 5, 2006 (produced in 2005)
  11. Whale of a Birthday / Karate Island: Mr. Krabs sends SpongeBob on a shopping spree to buy Pearl presents for her 16th birthday, and has to stall until he gets back. / SpongeBob is invited to take part in a special karate event at "Karate Island", and he brings Sandy along to rub it in. The late Pat Morita guest stars. May 12, 2006 (produced in 2005)
  12. All That Glitters / Wishing You Well: SpongeBob replaces his old and broken spatula with a new one, but discovers that new doesn't always mean better. / Mr. Krabs sends SpongeBob and Patrick down a wishing well to collect the money dropped by the wishers, while the two decide to hunt for the magic at the bottom. June 2, 2006 (produced in 2005)
  13. New Leaf / Once Bitten: Plankton changes his ways and converts the Chum Bucket into a gift shop, but Mr. Krabs thinks it's yet another plot to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula. / Gary starts biting everyone in town, and everyone believes he has "Mad Snail Disease".
