Tentacle-Vision

Squidward hosts his own television show that soon gets raided by everyone.

"Tentacle-Vision" contains examples of:

  • Abusive Advertising: This is how Plankton promotes the Chum Bucket:
Plankton: And eat at the Chum Bucket or perish!
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
"'Fab and Fancy,' your source for the latest in exotic pets, collectible jewel-encrusted mittens, and classical doorbell chimes... has been cancelled!
  • Bathroom Control: Patrick is tied to a camera to keep it steady. He says he has to use the bathroom, but Squidward tells him to wait until they're done filming. A few minutes later, Patrick says he doesn't need to go anymore.
  • Boring Broadcaster: Squidward gets his own show, Squidward Chat, on Bikini Bottom Public Access, having found out they'll give a show to just about anybody. When it becomes a massive success thanks to SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Pearl, and Plankton taking over, its president points out that it's doing just fine in the ratings — after which he brings in a small bag of money, and says, "This is actually a lot by Public Access standards.".
  • Butt-Monkey: Squidward. His television show gets taken over, and he eventually gets kicked out of it.
  • Cross-Popping Veins: Squidward does this when everyone is ruining his show.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Squidward.
  • Depending on the Writer: Patrick lampshades this about his stupidity:
Squidward: Patrick, just how dumb are you?
    Patrick: It varies.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: The episode ends with everyone, minus Squidward, playing a rock version of the theme song.
  • Downer Ending: Played for Laughs. Not only does Squidward's show get ruined by everyone, but it's taken over by the producer without him being featured on it and can't sleep because of it. It doesn't affect SpongeBob and his friends because they don't even care.
  • Get Out!: Squidward tells everyone this. This didn't work and the situation worsens when Larry and the other fish came into his house.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Squidward Chat is eventually renamed Squidward's House Party, and it does not have Squidward in it at all, due to the president of Bikini Bottom Public Access having kicked him out.
  • Potty Emergency: Patrick has one when he is operating the camera for Squidward Chat. Squidward tells Patrick that he'll just have to hold it, and in a later scene, Patrick says, "My shorts are wet!"
  • Product Placement: An in-universe example; Mr. Krabs advertises the Krusty Krab on Squidward Chat.
  • Running Gag: People interrupting Squidward’s show.
  • Spit Take: Subverted when Squidward attempts a spit take with his coffee after finding a favorite show of his cancelled, only to realize that he hadn't actually made his coffee yet. Played straight a moment later when he notices what his show was replaced by.

I ♥ Dancing

An envious Squidward tries to sabotage SpongeBob's dance audition.

"I ♥ Dancing" contains examples of:

  • An Aesop:
    • Don’t get envious of someone just because they get to do something that you want to do.
    • When training someone, don’t use them to your advantage, and never overwork them.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: At the end of Spongebob’s cane dancing routine, Squidward literally rips apart the effect in front of him to shout, "ENOUGH!"
  • Characterization Marches On: SpongeBob's behavior toward Squidward is obviously nothing like how he acted in "Pizza Delivery" when he immediately catches on to Squidward trying to entice him into eating the Krusty Krab pizza when he promised it's for the customer.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Squidward.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It never occurred to Squidward that there was a reason for SpongeBob getting scouted as a dancer; never mind his superior skill but Squilliam requires Squidward to dance in the way SpongeBob was, which is a style Squidward clearly dislikes and isn't an expert in.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: SpongeBob's cane-spinning routine.
  • Failure Montage: SpongeBob copying Squidward's dance move only to mess up the third part, which eventually leads to him fainting out of overtraining.
  • Glove Slap: Squilliam does this to Squidward when the latter can't get the former's dance moves right.
  • Good Night, Sweet Prince: "And hello, stardom for yours truly!" Note that SpongeBob said the exact same thing in "Frankendoodle".
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Squidward is jealous when the talent agent asks SpongeBob to audition.
  • Ironic Echo: When Squidward is "training" SpongeBob to dance, he orders him to not stop until he gets it right. In the ending, Squilliam says the same thing to Squidward when he's training him.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Squidward, as this time it's justified.
  • Karmic Twist Ending: Squidward succeeds in wearing out SpongeBob so he can steal his spot in the dancing audition. As he gets accepted, he is rewarded with being trained by his arch-rival Squilliam.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Squidward tries to tire SpongeBob out so he can't be in the dance audition, he succeeds and gets to take SpongeBob's place...only to find out he's being trained by Squilliam.
  • Lucky Charms Title: Notably the first example of this to date, the second being "We ♥ Hoops" from season 14.
  • Pass the Popcorn: At the very end of the episode as Squidward is being forcefully overworked by Squilliam like he did to SpongeBob, both SpongeBob and Patrick watch him in the bleachers sharing popcorn and soda.
SpongeBob: (sounding quite smug) I was up for that part.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: SpongeBob suddenly vanishes from the episode after he falls asleep, not even seen waking up and realizing he missed the audition. He only reappears in the last scene, watching Squidward dance for Squilliam.
  • Slasher Smile: Squidward sports one when SpongeBob is about to fall into a deep sleep from being overworked.
  • Spit Take: Squidward when SpongeBob does tricks with his ribbon.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: SpongeBob and Squilliam perform the same dance move and trash talk, complete with the same lead-up of "Here I go!".
  • Training Montage: Of Squidward trying to get SpongeBob to perfect his dance routine.
  • Unknown Rival: SpongeBob is completely oblivious that Squidward is wearing him out just so he can stop him going to the audition.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Squidward is overjoyed to find out that he's been picked...only to discover that he'll be dancing in Squilliam's show.
