Friendiversary

Original air date: 6/22/2023 (produced in 2022)

SpongeBob celebrates his friendship anniversary with Squidward. This drives Squidward so crazy that he resorts to extreme measures to not celebrate and erases his memory as a last resort, but this in turn causes him to forget the combination to the Krusty Krab safe.

"Friendiversary" contains examples of:

  • Author Guest Spot: We see a magazine with a shot of Squidward attending a Kelpy G concert. Two audience members, a moray eel and an anglerfish, are actually versions of background designer Sterling Richter and her friend Sara 'Serval' Fisher (an animator on Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss).
  • Big "WHAT?!": Mr. Krabs cries, "YOU...WHAT?!" after Squidward reveals he erased SpongeBob's memory.
  • Call-Back: Several pages in the memory book and the moments that Squidward tries to recreate are references to past episodes.
  • The Cat Came Back: Squidward's attempts to not celebrate the friendiversary with SpongeBob are all in vain, as wherever he goes to get away from him, SpongeBob is already there.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: The Eye Recall sequence features a lot of memories from previous episodes.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Squidward responds to a home invasion in the middle of the night by arming himself with a can of hairspray, which is compared to using pepper spray or a gun.
Squidward: Who's down there? I have an aerosol can and I'm not afraid to use it!
  • Episode Tagline: SpongeBob repeatedly says "remember this, Squidward?" and "happy Friendiversary!"
  • Everyone Has Standards: The normally greedy and bossy Mr. Krabs is outright horrified when he finds out Squidward erased SpongeBob's memory, meaning he also erased the memory of the combination to the secret formula and proceeds to call him out.
  • Eye Recall: Flashbacks of past episodes flash in SpongeBob's eyes when he is regaining his memory of Squidward.
  • Failure Montage: Squidward trying to help SpongeBob regain his memory of him by reenacting all the things they did in the past. SpongeBob shrugs at every one of them.
  • Here We Go Again!: The episode ends with SpongeBob revealing he celebrated the friendiversary a day early and proceeds to celebrate again, only to forget when it actually is.
  • It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Squidward took a last resort to wipe SpongeBob's entire memory of him so he won't annoy him anymore... which also happened to wipe his memory of the combination to the Krusty Krab safe as well, because he attached that to one of his memories to begin with.
  • Jerkass Ball:
    • SpongeBob was this in the first half of the episode, as he won't leave Squidward alone and keeps asking him to celebrate with him despite his insistence. He even sneaks into Squidward's house in the middle of the night and takes advantage of the time he scared him in a trash can.
    • Of course, Squidward then drops the ball by erasing SpongeBob's memories of him.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Squidward erasing his pictures from SpongeBob's memory book, followed by literally erasing them from his brain, causes him to lose his memory of him and not know who he is; unfortunately, doing so also erases his memory of the combination to Mr. Krabs' safe which contains the secret formula, because he attached it to one of the memories with Squidward so he wouldn't forget it.
  • Monster Clown: The car chase with lima beans features a vicious clown who screams like a monkey and attacks SpongeBob and Squidward.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: When Squidward erases SpongeBob's memory of him, he also erases his memory of the combination to the safe in the Krusty Krab which contains the secret formula, because Squidward was around for that time. Mr. Krabs was not happy to hear this.
  • Oblivious to Hatred: SpongeBob's "friendiversary" is completely one-sided as it shows just how oblivious he is of Squidward's hatred of him, to the point he won't leave Squidward alone.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mr. Krabs knows something is not right when he sees Squidward with a big grin on his face at the register after erasing SpongeBob's memory.
  • Reality Warper: SpongeBob shows memories of him and Squidward that clearly never happened, such as them at the founding of Bikini Bottom. Squidward is driven mad by this.
Squidward: He remembers everything! Everything that happened! Even things that didn't happen! Maybe even things that will happen! Things that will never happen! If he remembers it, it happens!
  • Regained Memories Sequence: When SpongeBob is regaining his memory of Squidward, flashbacks of all their times together flash through his eyes.
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: One of the scenes SpongeBob and Squidward reenact is the unseen incident involving lima beans and a car chase that SpongeBob mentioned in "Fools in April", now shown in full detail.
  • Stalker without a Crush: SpongeBob's naïve behavior really takes a turn here, as he even mumbles in his sleep that he wants to "live together forever" with Squidward.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Mr. Krabs chews Squidward out for erasing SpongeBob's memory and making him forget the combination to the safe, and forces him to spend time with him so he remembers.

Mandatory Music

Original air date: 6/26/2023 (produced in 2022)

Squidward's lack of talent gets him sent to a court-ordered music class with SpongeBob.

"Mandatory Music" contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Mandatory Music.
  • Ash Face: Happens to Squidward when he tries to play a pan flute.
  • Dreadful Musician: Squidward's clarinet playing is so bad in this episode that it destroys the city and lands him in music class.
  • Furry Reminder: Squidward playing his nose as a musical instrument causes him to squirt ink a couple of times.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Squidward's clarinet playing shatters the windows of Larry's gym.
  • Iris Out: Similar to "My Leg!", it irises out on Squidward's nose, which breaks off.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Despite all the troubles Squidward goes through, he actually does win the audience over with playing his nose as a music instrument, similar to SpongeBob.
