Escape from Beneath Glove World

Original air date: 1/18/2020 (produced in 2019)

SpongeBob and Patrick are sent to jail in the underground tunnels of Glove World, leading to a daring escape.

The episode contains examples of:

  • Angry Guard Dog: The guard gloves act like vicious guard dogs and even drag away a worker at one point.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The Animatronic Hieronymus Glove turns out to be sentient and becomes extremely hostile to SpongeBob and Patrick (especially the latter) and when the real Hieronymus Glove shows up, the robot claims to be the real one, and has to have his memory wiped to go back to his more pleasant demeanor.
  • Bait-and-Switch: A kid without arms and legs claims he was put in Glove World Jail for not keeping his arms and legs inside ride. However, he then reveals he does still have arms and really long legs.
  • Big Brother Instinct: SpongeBob and Patrick immediately develop this towards the toddler they meet in Glove World-jail, going out of their way to keep him safe during their adventure.
  • Book Ends: The episode both starts and ends with Hieronymus Glove singing about gloves.
  • Broken Record:
    • The Animatronic Hieronymus Glove shouting, "I need repair!"
    • The old man animatronic in SpongeBob and Patrick's jail cell won't stop repeating his phrase every time Patrick gets close to it, much to the latter's dismay.
Old Man: Breaking the rules, eh? [laughs] Good for you, matey!
  • The Bus Came Back: Helen the Felon from Season 11's "Call the Cops" returns.
  • Cardboard Prison: Glove World Jail is easily escapable and has bars that appear to be made of rubber.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Splendid!" for Hieronymus Glove.
  • Cheerful Child: The toddler, who gets into all sorts of shenanigans during his adventure but is almost never anything but happy.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: During a test involving a Glove World worker being horribly burnt by lasers, SpongeBob covers the toddler's eyes.
  • Glove Slap: SpongeBob and Patrick do this to each other to snap themselves out of The Un-Smile plastered on their faces.
  • Eleventy Zillion: SpongeBob and Patrick ride the Catch Me "a million, zillion, jillion, dillion, cotillion times".
  • Harmless Freezing: Hieronymus Glove is frozen in a block of ice yet is still awake and able to communicate with everyone.
  • Here We Go Again!: After SpongeBob, Patrick and the toddler manage to defeat Animatronic Hieronymus Glove and get pardoned by the real one, the episode ends on a musical number...which then ends with the toddler running off again, SpongeBob and Patrick chasing after him once more.
  • Hot Potato: SpongeBob, Patrick and the Animatronic Hieronymus Glove end up playing an impromptu game of hot potato with Patrick's severed head during the climax...which turns out to be a ploy on SpongeBob's part to get the animatronic to release the toddler.
  • Human Popsicle: Glove World creator, Hieronymus Glove, is cryogenically frozen.
  • Mr. Alt Disney: Hieronymus Glove is one, right down to the urban legend that he's cryogenically frozen...which turns out to be true at the end.
  • Nightmare Face: SpongeBob and Patrick's faces are grotesquely stretched out and frozen after repeatedly going on one of the Glove World rides. The parkgoers are terrified of them, with a baby screaming at first sight and another goer throwing their popcorn at them.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: The animatronic Hieronymus Glove is disappointed when Patrick (rather casually) pulls off his head and hands it over. (Truth in Television-slash-Shown Their Work for starfish, who can regenerate lost limbs easily, and don't really have heads, per se.)
  • Off with His Head!: Patrick accidentally does this to the Animatronic Hieronymus Glove. He wants to do the same to Patrick, and is dismayed when Patrick does it for him.
  • Pet Gets the Keys: An animatronic display has some prisoners in Glove World Jail trying to coax a worm to bring them the keys.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode is stuffed with references to the Disney Theme Parks, from the recreation of the jail dog scene from Pirates of the Caribbean to the more obscure, such as the underground utility hallways that sit underneath the parks.
    • The title could be a reference to Escape from Tomorrow, an indie horror film shot at Disney World and Disneyland without permission from Disney.
  • Toilet Humour: Patrick guesses that the toddler helping him and SpongeBob out is in the jail for "pooping without a license." The two promptly crack up.
  • The Unintelligible: The kid that helps SpongeBob and Patrick makes babbling noises instead of talking. Justified since he is only a toddler.
  • The Unsmile: SpongeBob and Patrick get these after riding the Catch Me "A million, zillion, jillion, dillion, cotillion" times.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: What happened to the other prisoners who escaped Glove Jail?
  • Wingding Eyes: SpongeBob and Patrick's pupils turn into gloves just before watching the show.
