Original air date: 7/26/2007 (produced in 2006)

After making what he believes to be the perfect Krabby Patty, SpongeBob falls in love with it, refusing to let anyone eat it, even as it begins to rot.

"To Love A Patty" contains examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: In the developers' audio commentary it is off-handedly stated that the clams SpongeBob is fighting during the Falling-in-Love Montage are actually "stunt scallops". Although there's nothing in the episode that would indicate that.
  • An Aesop:
    • Don't get obsessed with materialistic objects. It's not healthy.
    • Food is meant to be enjoyed by eating it, before it can go bad.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: SpongeBob had no problem smashing up the clams for trying to take his Krabby Patty.
  • Companion Food: The Krabby Patty to SpongeBob, though it's a romantic variant.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: SpongeBob outright murders a bunch of innocent clams just for trying to eat his Krabby Patty, which he treated as sentient.
  • The Ditz: SpongeBob takes the patty on a dinner date to the Krusty Krab and has the nerve/stupidity to ask Squidward what's on the menu. Squidward angrily reminds him he's the chef of the place.
  • Failed a Spot Check: SpongeBob somehow failed to notice Patty was rotting, until he sniffs her himself after Squidward points it out.
  • Falling-in-Love Montage: SpongeBob has a musical one as he dates the patty everywhere he goes.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: The patty when it's rotten.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: SpongeBob briefly encounters one in his song to Patty.
  • Jawbreaker: The way SpongeBob murders the last baby clam... Ouch.
  • Jerkass Ball: SpongeBob remorselessly destroys a bunch of clams over a Krabby Patty.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: SpongeBob is forced to eat the moldy patty he fell in love with by Mr. Krabs.
  • Oh, Crap!: SpongeBob is utterly horrified when he sees that Patty has become moldy and aged.
  • Roundabout Shot: SpongeBob has one during his musical number.
  • Shout-Out: "I Can't Keep My Eyes Off of You" is a parody of the High School Musical song "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: At least on SpongeBob's end, referring to Patty with nicknames such as, "wubby-wubby".
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: "There isn't a Krabby Patty behind my back or anything!"
  • This Is a Song: This part in SpongeBob's love song to Patty:
Oh, baby, our love is so strong. That's why I'm singing this song.
  • Visual Pun: SpongeBob sings "I'll never let you out of my sight again" as he presses Patty against his eyeball.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After Patrick laments on how SpongeBob "replaced [him with] a sandwich", he states he'll make a lovely sandwich of his own to make SpongeBob jealous, but disappears for the rest of the episode.
  • Why Don't You Marry It?: Squidward tells SpongeBob this about the Krabby Patty, and SpongeBob takes it to heart:
Squidward: What are you going to do with it, take it home? Put a little dress on her? Go out for a romantic walk with it?
    SpongeBob: Great idea!
  • Wingding Eyes: Mr. Krabs gets dollar signs in his eyes when he says, "I can just smell the money already!"
  • Yandere: Initially, it seems like SpongeBob's love for the Krabby Patty seems out of artistic value, but once it amps up to romantic levels, SpongeBob goes full-blown obsessive over it, to the point that he's willing to murder an entire flock of scallops instead of just grabbing it and running away.

Squidward gets electrocuted by an electric fence, with the shocks to his brain affecting his personality, making him nice and cheerful. While this pleases SpongeBob at first, he realizes this new Squidward is starting to take over his life.

"Breath of Fresh Squidward" contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: Don't be so prideful that you can't be happy for your friends.
  • Bait-and-Switch Accusation: After SpongeBob blames Squidward for making the smiley face Krabby Patty:
Mr. Krabs: I have one thing to say to you, mister: Oh, I just love those little ketchup dimples you do! You're me new Employee of the Month!
  • Body Wipe: SpongeBob walking with new Squidward attached to him.
SpongeBob: Boy, the new Squidward sure is chummy.
  • Did You Get a New Haircut?: When SpongeBob asks Patrick if he notices anything different about Squidward, Patrick guesses, "New glasses?" When SpongeBob points out that Squidward seems happier, Patrick responds, "He's probably happy about his new glasses."
  • Failed a Spot Check: Both times Squidward gets electrocuted, SpongeBob fails to notice. In the second instance, SpongeBob also gets electrocuted himself (alongside Patrick).
  • Good-Times Montage: Of SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward at the petting zoo and the carnival.
  • Hour Glass Plot: Played With. The episode starts off with SpongeBob (alongside Patrick) barging into Squidward's house uninvited, infuriating the latter to no end. After getting electrocuted, Squidward gets a personality change, barging into SpongeBob's house this time and infuriating him to no end. However, the ending has Squidward getting electrocuted again and returning to his original grumpy self, with both SpongeBob and Patrick turning into clones of Squidward himself (due to getting electrocuted alongside Squidward this time).
  • Here We Go Again!: In the ending, Squidward is back to his old personality after being electrocuted again, but SpongeBob and Patrick get themselves electrocuted and become grumpy like Squidward.
  • Hypocrite: SpongeBob gets annoyed by Squidward's clinginess towards him, completely overlooking the fact that he himself acts this way towards Squidward all the time, such as breaking into his house earlier on.
  • Jerkass Ball: SpongeBob grabs it when he lashes out at Squidward at the party, sending the latter to tears. That being said, he does apologize for it afterward.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: SpongeBob usually gets away with his thoughtless behavior towards Squidward, but he receives a good Humiliation Conga when Squidward stalks and upstages him. He also gets electrocuted alongside Squidward after sending the latter out of the party.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After SpongeBob yells at Squidward and drives him back to his house where he gets electrocuted by his electric fence again, SpongeBob goes to Squidward to apologize, not noticing him being electrocuted. As SpongeBob tries to shake Squidward's hand, he gets electrocuted as well.
  • Law of Disproportionate Response: Patrick brings a cake to celebrate Spongebob winning employee of the month, something he's never done before, even though Spongebob has been stated to have won "a gazillion and 6 times" before.
  • Minor Insult Meltdown: Squidward tearfully leaves Patrick's house after SpongeBob yells at him, which led to him being electrocuted again, turning back to his old grumpy self.
  • Moral Myopia: SpongeBob regularly acts clingy towards Squidward (which irritates the latter senselessly), yet he gets indignant when Squidward starts doing the same to him, going as far as harshly telling him off for it.
  • Plot Hole: At the end of the episode, Squidward gets electrocuted again by his electric fence (alongside SpongeBob and Patrick this time), despite his electric fence shutting down earlier.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Squidward pogo bouncing with Patrick is what causes SpongeBob to finally snap and shun Squidward, forcing him out.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After he sees Squidward dancing with Patrick, SpongeBob gives out one to the former:
SpongeBob: Maybe you can take my job, and maybe you can take my place on the Employee of the Month Wall of Fame! But nobody and I mean nobody, pogo-dances with that guy but me! Now do yourself a big fat favor and get out, bub!
  • Status Quo Is God: Squidward returns back to his grumpy self after being electrocuted, although SpongeBob and Patrick act like Squidward after getting electrocuted themselves.
  • A Taste of Defeat: This happens to SpongeBob after Squidward is made Employee of the Month.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine:
  • Unintentionally Karmic: Squidward becomes this to SpongeBob for once by giving him the same clingy and obsessive treatment.
  • Visual Pun: The men's bathroom at the Krusty Krab has a sign reading "Buoys" with a picture of a buoy.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: SpongeBob is at first happy about Squidward's personality change, but quickly begins to miss the old sour Squidward.
