Accidents Will Happen

Original air date: 7/18/2011 (produced in 2010)

Squidward gets an injury at the Krusty Krab and forces Mr. Krabs to pamper him or he'll call the OWS.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Compassion: After the accident, Mr. Krabs rushes over to Squidward in concern.
Mr. Krabs: Oh no! Please, no! This is terrible! (bursts into tears) Are you hurt?
Squidward: Oh, well. Thank you for ask-
Mr. Krabs: I wasn't talking to you! (picks up some of the buns) Don't worry, papa's here.
  • Big "NO!": Mr. Krabs lets one out, followed by a Big "WHY?!", when he hears he'll be fined one dollar.
  • Blatant Lies: Squidward says he was working hard before his “injury”, a clear sign of his fakery. We all know what kind of employee Squidward is.
  • Bones Do Not Belong There: Lampshaded: Squidward, a cephalopod, states that he twisted his ankle, to which Mr. Krabs states he was unaware even had ankles.
  • Call-Back: At one point, an injured Patrick says, "Finland".
  • Caught on Tape: When it seems as though Squidward's ruse has succeeded after SpongeBob and Patrick call the OWS for help in investigating the accident, it quickly falls apart when Mr. Krabs remembers the surveillance camera he set up in the storage room, which recorded Squidward not only faking his injury, but trying to sleep on the job, as well.
  • Foreshadowing: When SpongeBob recreated Squidward's bun shelf accident with Patrick, the latter keeps falling very differently from how Squidward did. At first glance, it seems like a hopeless attempt, but it was clear foreshadowing later on, that Squidward's accident was done by him slacking during work.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Played for Laughs. After it's revealed that Squidward's injury was due to him trying to nap during his shift, Mr. Krabs forces Squidward to pop barnacles on his back. The end result: Squidward screams like hell.
  • Lazy Bum: Squidward didn’t break his leg and was just lying down on the job.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: Patrick spouts these due to SpongeBob trying to re-create Squidward's accident by repeatedly smashing Patrick over the head with a shelf. At one point, saying "Pudding." and later saying "Breakfast...green...Finland."
  • Obfuscating Disability: Squidward faked his injuries the whole time.
  • Oh, Crap!: Squidward when he learns that the storage room has surveillance cameras.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: Played for Laughs. Happens when Mr. Krabs pops barnacles on Squidward's back, and again at the end when Squidward is forced to pop barnacles on Mr. Krabs's back.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: After Squidward's deception was revealed, he was forced to pop all the back barnacles on Mr. Krabs.
  • Tempting Fate: When he has to work the register, Mr. Krabs is relieved there are no customers, only to be met with a long line of anchovies.
  • Truth in Television: During an investigation, you will notice a number of aspects that doesn't fit a witness's description.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Squidward pulls this off on Mr. Krabs until he was found out.

The Other Patty

Original air date: 6/25/2011 (produced in 2010)

Mr. Krabs and Plankton share a rivalry with a new burger joint.

Tropes:

  • Big "NO!": Mr. Krabs and Plankton scream one in unison when the Flabby Patty formula slips out of their hands.
  • Call-Back: Mr. Krabs and Plankton's former friendship was brought up again.
  • Chased Off into the Sunset: The episode ends with Mr. Krabs and Plankton using their newly established "cooperation" to chase SpongeBob into the distance.
  • Enemy Mine: SpongeBob wants Mr. Krabs and Plankton to work together to sneak into the Flabby Patty restaurant.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • SpongeBob seems relatively calm in the instances of the discovery of the Flabby Patty restaurant. It turns out he is the one responsible for such.
    • Note that the Flabby Patty first appears right after the scene where SpongeBob wonders, "If only there was some way to bring you two back together."
  • Explosive Leash: An edible variant where Mr. Krabs took measures of the security where all Krabby Patties explode at 10 feet beyond the Krusty Krab, which Plankton learns the hard way. A female fish mentions that they have to chew before swallowing, which the male fish learns the hard way as well.
Female Fish: Never listens to me.
  • Former Friends Photo: When reminding Mr. Krabs and Plankton of the two's past friendship, SpongeBob pulls out a photo of them from when they were friends.
  • Mediation Backfire: SpongeBob reveals in the end that he started the Flabby Patty to help Mr. Krabs and Plankton's friendship. The two respond by chasing after him, with intent to beat him up.
  • Shout-Out: SpongeBob yelling "The fish hooks are coming!" is a reference to Paul Revere saying "The British are coming!"
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Mr. Krabs and Plankton when reluctantly taking SpongeBob's idea of working together to get the secret formula.
  • Tempting Fate: After hearing about the new restaurant, Mr. Krabs states that he's sure his customers will remain loyal. But once the customers get whiff of the flabby patty, they disappear into thin air.
  • Totem Pole Trench: SpongeBob's plan involves Mr. Krabs and Plankton doing this, except with Plankton carrying Mr. Krabs.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: How do Mr. Krabs and Plankton repay SpongeBob for attempting to restore their friendship? By chasing after him with intent to beat him up. Granted, the two of them did get seriously injured multiple times in the process, so their anger over all of that being for nothing is at least understandable.
  • Visible Odor: Plankton is drawn to the scent of the flabby patty.
  • We Used to Be Friends: SpongeBob mentions Mr. Krabs and Plankton's old friendship through a picture.
  • Wingding Eyes: After tasting a sample of the flabby patty, Plankton's eye turns into a countdown from 3 before he flies off like a rocket.
