Recap / Sponge Bob Square Pants S 7 E 21

Original air date: 8/9/2010

SpongeBob and Patrick play hide-and-seek, and Patrick proves to be a better hider than SpongeBob thought...or so he thinks.

"Hide and Then What Happens?" provides examples of:

  • Answer Cut: Right after SpongeBob wonders, "Now, where is [Patrick] hiding?", we cut to his perspective, and he centers in on Patrick's house, which is where Patrick is, only for him to dismiss and leave for deeming it too obvious.
  • Dramatic Irony: SpongeBob is completely unaware Patrick went home while he was counting, and spends the whole episode looking for him until the end.
  • Identical Stranger: Patrick Not-Star, who looks like Patrick but with a weird face and beard.
  • Irony: SpongeBob searches all over the world for Patrick, but he isn't anywhere; ironically, his first guess, his own house, which he rejected due to being too obvious, was actually the correct answer, and it takes him until the end of the episode to realize that.
  • Missed Him by That Much: After SpongeBob finishes counting, his first suggestion where Patrick is hiding is his rock house; he rejects that on account it would be too obvious. Right when he leaves, Patrick comes out of his house.
  • Mistaken from Behind: At first SpongeBob thinks Patrick Not-Star is Patrick Star, until he turns around.
  • Overly Long Gag:
    • SpongeBob and Patrick staring at each other silently for about 30 seconds in the beginning, blinking occasionally.
    • Also SpongeBob repeatedly saying "Are you sure?" in progression when Mrs. Puff refuses to help.
  • Series Continuity Error: Patrick is shown to not know what hide-and-seek is, but he plays it perfectly with SpongeBob in "Wormy". This is even lampshaded by SpongeBob, in the form of him saying they've played before dozens of times.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Turns out Patrick was at home the whole time. We even get to see him go home.

Original air date: 9/18/2010

Plankton masquerades as Gary to get the formula only to experience a trip to the hospital.

"Shellback Shenanigans" contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Shellback Shenanigans
  • Big "NO!": SpongeBob does this when Mr. Krabs thinks they should reschedule Take Your Pet To Work Day.
  • Berserk Button: After coming back from his vacation, Gary immediately recognized Plankton in his original shell and attacked him for posing as the snail himself. Afterwards, Plankton’s presence gives Gary a vibe.
  • Costume Copycat: Plankton disguises himself as Gary.
  • Dinner Deformation: Plankton is forced to take a pill that's twice his size, which also dissolves into foam inside his mouth.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Plankton's disguise goes so good it causes SpongeBob to assume he's getting sick.
  • Green Around the Gills: SpongeBob notices "Gary" is turning green, which prompts him to realize something is not right.
  • Hates Baths: It's for this reason that Gary gives up his shell to Plankton and goes on vacation.
  • Never Say "Die": Played straight.
SpongeBob: You're- you're saying that he's... that he might... oh... Nurse? Nurse?! Oh, well, Gary, this looks like it might be... the end.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: SpongeBob is shocked when "Gary" starts talking and turning green, prompting him to take him to the hospital.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Plankton's Gary disguise fools SpongeBob perfectly.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Done In-Universe when SpongeBob notices "Gary" suddenly talking, prompting him to realize something's not right.
  • Tempting Fate: Plankton gloats about his apparent victory when a tearful SpongeBob heads off to make "Gary" what appears to be a final Krabby Patty. On cue, Gary shows up and beats him out of the restaurant.
  • Who's on First?: When Plankton and Karen are spying on Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob from outside.
SpongeBob: When are we making this fresh batch of krabby patties, Mr. Krabs?
    Mr. Krabs: What?
Plankton: Okay, now what'd he say?
    Karen: "What?".
Plankton: I said, "What'd he say?"
    Karen: He said, "What?".
Plankton: I have no idea, that's why I'm asking you what he said!
Karen: I know that, and I'm saying he said, "What?"!!
Plankton: I know that! Wait... oh, he said, "What?"
    Karen: Yes!
