His chops are too righteous!

Don't ever look back, on the world closing in,
Be on the attack with your wings on the wind,
And the games will begin!

SpongeBob SquarePants isn't a musical series. But when you've been on television for more than twenty years, it's obvious that you're gonna have a few songs scattered throughout episodes. As for SpongeBob, it's had nine soundtrack albums (one of which came from the first movie, two from the second movie, two from the third movie, and one from the musical).

The original Theme Song was created by Derek Drymon, Mark Harrison, Stephen Hillenburg and Blaise Smith, based on "Blow the Man Down", mixed in with other sea shanties, as Hillenburg always enjoyed that style.

Below is a list of the SpongeBob SquarePants soundtracks, and the songs featured in them. Note that this list does not have any compilation albums with songs from other Nickelodeon series, nor any official releases of the series' APM music library or video game scores. note

The soundtracks provide examples of

  • Album Intro Track:
    • "WH20 Radio Show Open" from The Best Day Ever, featuring Al Bacore from WH2O introducing the album to the in-universe radio listeners.
    • "Prologue" from The New Musical, featuring French Narrator welcoming the audience to Bikini Bottom before the next song, "Bikini Bottom Day", plays.
  • Anaphora: In "Christmas Is Mine":
Plankton: A time for sharing... with me!
A time for caring... about me!
    A time for thinking selfishly!
I'll hurt you if you don't agree!
  • Book Ends:
    • Original Theme Highlights starts with the Theme Song and ends with its Halloween version.
    • The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie's soundtrack begins and closes with a version of the Theme Song.
    • Similarly, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run soundtrack begins and closes with a version of "Agua".
  • Face on the Cover: Original Theme Highlights and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie's cover prominently feature SpongeBob's face.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: A musical example. "The Best Day Ever" and "Under My Rock" were written for The Best Day Ever, but first appeared on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie album ("The Best Day Ever" itself appeared in the movie's credits); "Employee of the Month" was also included on certain promotional copies of the album.
  • Fake Radio Show Album: The Best Day Ever, which in interspersed with song requests from the characters, ads, and even radio hijacking by Plankton.
  • Game of Chicken: "Ridin' the Hook" describes playing "hooky" (riding a fishing hook, getting pulled to the surface, then jumping off before reaching it) combined with this.
They reel you in so fast
Let's see who lets go last
  • "I Am Great!" Song:
    • "Superior" features Squidward bragging about how great he is compared to everybody else.
    • "Who Wants to Race Me?" has Sandy singing about how fast she is.
  • Job Song: "Employee of the Month" is about SpongeBob's work ethics at the Krusty Krab and how it earns him the titular award.
  • Location Song: "Bikini Bottom/Rock Bottom" is about the relaxing nature of Bikini Bottom and the energetic nature of Rock Bottom, told separately in contrasting verses.
  • Longest Song Goes Last: The Best Day Ever closes with "Bikini Bottom/Rock Bottom" (4:41).
  • Lyrical Dissonance: "Where's Gary?" is an upbeat song about SpongeBob being distraught that Gary is missing. It features lines like "now I'm so lonely all the time" and "it tortures me all night and day, what could have made you run away?", but is generally sung in a happy tone.
  • Minimalistic Cover Art: The Yellow Album's cover is just the album title with yellow background. Although the cover of the "enhanced version" is less minimalistic with the addition of SpongeBob, Patrick, and promotional text.
  • Money Song: "Cha-Ching" from The Yellow Album and "Fishin' for Money" from ''The Best Day Ever". Not coincidentally, they're sung by Mr. Krabs.
  • Non-Appearing Title: "SpongeBob and Patrick Confronts the Psychic Wall of Energy", "Prince Paul's Bubble Party".
  • One-Word Title: "Barnacles!", "Superior", "Snowflakes".
  • Parody Assistance:
    • "You Better Swim" is a fish-themed parody of Motörhead's "You Better Run"... by Motörhead.
    • With The Best Day Ever being based upon 60s pop, a lot of artists of the era contributed to it, to the extent that they got "half of the people who worked on Pet Sounds", according to Tom Kenny.
  • Retraux: The Best Day Ever is done in the style of 60s pop and 70s rock (in the vein of The Beach Boys and the Ramones), and along with featuring musicians from the bands it was inspired by, it's also mixed in mono to evoke the same sound.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Yellow Album's title and cover is an obvious one to The White Album.
    • Plankton says "Take it, James!" when leading into the guitar solo on "You Will Obey!". The solo was played by James Burton, the guitarist for Elvis Presley, and Elvis would often say the same thing before the guitar solos in his live performances.
  • Spoken Word in Music: Except for the opening track, each song in Original Theme Highlights is preceded by a few lines of dialogue from the episode it played in. The last track also closes out with Squidward saying "You're killing me, SpongeBob! You really are."
  • Stylistic Suck: Squidward's vocals in "Superior" become this at several points, to the point he ends up coughing after struggling to reach the final high note.
  • Title Track: "The Best Day Ever" in The Best Day Ever.
  • Villain Song: "Christmas Is Mine", sung by Plankton, is all about his hostile takeover of Christmas and how he's turning the holiday to be about himself.
