That Sinking Feeling

Original air date: 7/8/2010

SpongeBob and Patrick dig a tunnel between their houses and unknowingly sink Squidward's house in the process.

"That Sinking Feeling" contains examples of:

  • Butt-Monkey: Squidward as usual.
  • Counting to Three: After SpongeBob and Patrick brought a pile of dirt in his house, Squidward threatens them to dig it out by the count of three, which frightens them.
Squidward: I'm warning you: If you don't put my house back where it belongs by the count of th-ree- *raises hand but only raises two so he uses his nose* Three. I am going to grind you into Chum! One!
Patrick: AHH!!! He's counting, anything but counting!!! Quick, SpongeBob! Dig for your life!!!
    Squidward: Twwwwwwwwwooooooo!
Patrick: He's already at Number Two!!! Who knows how many numbers we have until he reaches three?!!
    Squidward: Th-ree!
    Patrick: (gasp)
    SpongeBob and Patrick: AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
  • Distinction Without a Difference: SpongeBob tells Squidward he and Patrick weren't playing in Squidward's yard, they were playing in their yards and used his yard as a walkway.
  • Downer Ending: Bikini Bottom sinks underground and SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and the rest of the Bikini Bottomites are digging out the town. This doesn't seem to affect SpongeBob, though.
  • Fear-Induced Idiocy: Patrick and SpongeBob run from an enraged Squidward while they're underground. Because of how panicked they are, they simply attempt to dig through the rock instead of around it. This is downplayed, since neither of them are particularly smart (especially Patrick).
  • Insult Backfire:
Squidward: I knew you two reprobates were behind this.
    SpongeBob: Yeah! We're reprobates!
    Squidward: That was an insult.
    Patrick: And we're insulted!
  • Loophole Abuse: Squidward tells SpongeBob and Patrick they cannot play on his yard, so they dig under it.
  • Never Say "Die": Squidward forces SpongeBob and Patrick to dig out his house on the count of three, or he'll "grind them into chum". Chum is fish guts, and this is an underwater show, so it seemed like Squidward wanted to kill them.
  • No Ending: In the end, all of Bikini Bottom is sunken, but there's no explanation how everything was dug out by the next episode.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • SpongeBob and Patrick when Squidward is enraged enough to the point of them unable to dig his house out, followed by an even bigger one when they cannot go any further and he rounds on them.
    • An earlier one done by SpongeBob when Squidward is on the cusp of a Rage Breaking Point; cue him saying "Wuh-oh!"
  • 1-Dimensional Thinking: When SpongeBob and Patrick are being chased by Squidward and encounter a rock, they tried to go through it, rather than over, under, or around it.
  • Overly Long Gag: The episode starts with SpongeBob and Patrick repeatedly running back and forth from Sponge's house to Pat's and back across Squidward's front yard while laughing.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Squidward has a couple of these:
  • The Scream: SpongeBob and Patrick have a long and horrified one in unison when they cannot dig out Squidward's house in time, leading to the climatic chase scene. They let out another when they cannot go any further and Squidward comes right around the bend.
  • Shout-Out: The underground chase is a reference to Dig Dug, right down to Squidward getting crushed by a rock, though unlike the original game, Squidward simply pushes it off.
  • Tears of Remorse: SpongeBob and Patrick's response to Squidward's second Punctuated! For! Emphasis! response above.
    SpongeBob and Patrick: We're sorry...
  • Tempting Fate: When SpongeBob and Patrick's digging causes the Krusty Krab to fall underground, Plankton gloats that the Chum Bucket is now the only restaurant in town. The Chum Bucket promptly also falls underground, and when he sees what happened he lets out a dejected "Nuts."
  • This Is My Side: Squidward draws a rectangle around his yard so that SpongeBob and Patrick wouldn't play on it.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Squidward was really set over the edge after SpongeBob and Patrick brought the dirt into his house.
  • Who's on First?: Patrick tells Squidward that he doesn't need to thank them for burying his house, and Squidward angrily asks "THANK YOU?!!", to which Patrick says "You're welcome".

Karate Star

Original air date: 7/9/2010

Patrick's new karate skills cause him to wreak havoc on Bikini Bottom.

"Karate Star" contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: Martial arts, including karate, are all bound under a strict code of honor that practitioners must follow. In this case, martial arts must be done in self-defense, not to hurt other people.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Done by SpongeBob when Patrick is about to chop a baby.
    • The panicking fish who warns SpongeBob about Patrick's mad chopping screams this once SpongeBob leaves the Krusty Krab.
  • Comes Great Responsibility: What Patrick learns in the end.
  • Do Not Explain The Joke: Happens in the beginning when SpongeBob makes Gary a pineapple sculpture of him.
SpongeBob: Cuz you're so sweet. Get it? Cuz pineapples are sweet, and you are sweet also as well. Get it? (Gary leaves)
  • Furry Reminder: Patrick tears off his own arm and regenerates it just like a real-life sea star would. The severed arm also regenerates a new body that is still a mad chopper.
  • Hope Spot: When Patrick causes the Barg N' Mart to collapse, he mistakes a packet of cleaning sponges for SpongeBob and thinks he crushed him. When a random fish points out his mistake, Patrick is relieved...at first.
Patrick: (Hopefully) Then I haven't crushed the life out of my best friend in the world?
Fish: Uh, I wouldn't say that.
(Screen pans out to show SpongeBob's feet sticking out from under a tower of rubble)
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Patrick is remorseful when he sees SpongeBob crushed under the Barg'N-Mart debris.
  • Shout-Out: The way that only SpongeBob's legs are seen when he is crushed is similar to The Wizard of Oz.
    • When Patrick slices the cinder block in half, the halves look similar to the brick blocks from Super Mario Bros..
    • Patrick not being able to control his hand when it chops is similar to Idle Hands.
    • Patrick saying "Oh, yeah!" and bursting through a brick wall might be a reference to vintage Kool-Aid commercials.
  • Storefront Television Display: Patrick is on an uncontrollable karate-chopping rampage and is chopping down the Barg-N-Mart. He chops down a giant screen TV that is broadcasting a news report about him, and then chops down an even "gianter" TV! They're not in the storefront but rather in the aisles.
  • Strong, but Unskilled: Patrick is deemed incapable of learning formal karate training, aside from a simple chop. However, his monstrous strength allows him to perform a perfect slice even on the hardest of substances.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: When a fish informs SpongeBob that Patrick is causing trouble, he sets out to stop him on his own despite the fish's protests.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Patrick says this to his hand which he then takes apart.
  • Tyop on the Cover: An in-universe example - Bikini Botton Arcade.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: SpongeBob advises Patrick to use his karate skills responsibly. Unsurprisingly, he didn't listen.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Subverted. Patrick attepts to chop a baby, which SpongeBob prevents him from doing.

That Sinking Feeling

SpongeBob and Patrick don't seem to understand the meaning of "reprobate".

How well does it match the trope?
