Trial of the Wolf

Link endures his most grueling trial yet to unlock his true power.

Tropes:

  • Chekhov's Gun: The Drillshaft Link obtained from the Black Hinox helps him in the next fight with the Stone Talus.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Once it comes down to the Lynels in the snowy room, Link does everything he can to avoid dying and evade the Lynels instead of fighting them head on, before using an ancient arrow to kill them in one hit.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Thanks to Link's Drillshaft from the Hinox, Link defeats the Stone Talus before it even has a chance to stand up.
  • Disappears into Light: All of the monks in the Wolf Monks' Shrine disappear into light like the rest of the Sheikah Monks once Link completes the Trial of the Wolf.
  • Elite Mooks: All of the enemies Link fights that have color variations are all Golden, and if not, they're the strongest variant of their kind.
  • Exposed to the Elements: The last room has Link fighting Golden Lynels while he still has almost no clothing to protect himself.
  • Faking the Dead: Link pretends to be either dead or unconscious, but either way, it lures the Lynels close enough to him to use an ancient arrow and a multishot bow to kill them both in one hit.
  • Foreshadowing: Link notes that all the monsters' eyes in the shrine are white instead of their usual colors (red for Moblins and Bokoblins, blue for Lynels).
  • Heroes Love Dogs: It's a giant wolf, but it still acts like a loyal dog to Link, and he in turn immediately treats it well.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Link knows he's no match for two Golden Lynels with so few weapons, so he adopts a more indirect fighting style where he steals an enemy weapon to use it against them.
  • Mini-Boss: Link has to fight a Black Hinox, a Stone Talus, and a Molduga, none of which he has ever fought before.
  • Mirror Character: Once Link proves his worthiness to have the Wolf Spirit's true power, he manifests himself in a powerful spectral form that rises into the air, complete with spectral clouds swirling around, and powerfully crying into the air. It makes it clear that Link and Calamity Ganon's power sources aren't so different from each other, and is another reminder of Ganondorf being a hero suffering from Demise's curse.
  • Multishot: The fact that Savage Lynel Bows use magic to split arrows comes back to help Link here. He steals a Golden Lynel's bow and uses its mulitshot nature to split one ancient arrow into multiple, disintegrating both at once.
  • No-Gear Level: Link has to start the trials without a single weapon to help him. He doesn't even have the Champions' gifts or the Wolf that he had when he had the Master Sword.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: Most of the trials are removed, and only a few are featured instead of 51 trials.
  • Strength Equals Worthiness: Link proves he's worthy of the Wolf Spirit by conquering all of the combat trials with only his wits and whatever he could scavenge from the rooms.
