Trivia / Friday Night Funkin': Corruption

Go To

  • Approval of God:
    • At the end of each video is a collage of fanart based on the series.
    • This mod is among the many shown in the Kickstarter trailer for The Full-Ass Game as part of a compilation on the community's contributions to the game.
    • Phantom Fear seems to have enjoyed a fan-made sub-series of Corruption with the Mid-Fight Masses duo trying to fight off the corrupted, if his comment in that part's finale is anything to go by.
  • Creator Thumbprint: In all of Week 8's songs outside of "Strength of Will" and "MEMORY//LEAK", there is a Recurring Riff in each (near the end of "Tormentor", in the instrumental during the guitar solo in "Neuroses", and the duet just before Soul Boyfriend says "Ready to ditch this joint?" in "Discharge"); the riff is the personal leitmotif of one of the Week's composers, Saster, that he usually includes in his original compositions. The riff shows up again towards the end of "Estranged", which Saster was one of three composers for.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Saster, who uses he/they pronouns, voices Soul Boyfriend, who is male.
  • Descended Creator:
    • Saster, one of the mod's composers, is also the voice of Soul Boyfriend.
    • Co-creator of the mod PrincerProd voices Girlfriend.
  • Fan-Work Ban:
    • Phantom Fear has blocked Recursive Game Mods and backports based on Corruption until the story is finished to prevent viewers from confusing Fanon with canon, and also because ripping off his artwork is required to make such mods. The primary exception to this is a backport of all songs except for "Discharge" to several Roblox ports of FNF, though most have been disowned due to the less-than-pleasurable antics of their developer teams.
    • Phantom Fear has also issued takedowns to many lyric videos based on the series, particularly ones that conflate canon and fanon, most infamously a fan interpretation of Week 6 long before the real week - and its technical prowess - were finished.
  • Flip-Flop of God: PrincerProd once confirmed that Soul Boyfriend and Glitch Boyfriend (the form Corrupted Boyfriend takes on in Week 6) were the same entity, but then later retracted that and instead stated that Soul Boyfriend is an entity completely of his own.
  • God-Created Canon Foreigner: evilsk8r, who is one of the original artists for Friday Night Funkin' helped with creating concept arts for the final design of the Harvester.
  • He Also Did: As Corruption was Saster's Star-Making Role in FNF, he had previously only been known for Undertale AU soundtracks (most famously "Confronting Yourself," which would ironically become its own mod) on the internet.
  • Lying Creator: Phantom Fear heavily teased the final video for Week 7 as being the final video for the entire mod, leading to The Stinger at the end, where Soul Boyfriend grins at the camera as a teaser for Week 8.
  • Meme Acknowledgement: The official "Inktober"-stylenote  challenge for the mod in 2021 incorporates the "*crys* why..." meme as the prompt for the 3rd.
  • Milestone Celebration: The Week 2 demo was released in celebration of Phantom Fear hitting 100k subscribers on YouTube.
  • Non-Singing Voice: Soul Boyfriend's vocals are pitch-shifted from regular Boyfriend's vocals. His actual speaking voice, however, is done by Week 8's composer, Saster. Saster did, however, sing the chorus of "Baka Mitai" for Soul Boyfriend's Twitter account as a gag.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • Prior to becoming a composer for the mod, Saster composed a fan remix of "Treacherous Thorns".
    • The composer for "Blood Moon", Zeroh, previously made a few fan songs for the mod before being brought on officially, "Suicide" and "Tag Team".
  • Referenced by...:
    • The redesigned Monster in Friday Night Funkin': Neo 3.0 takes design cues from the later corrupted characters, the right half of his body covered in gunk with the eye and mouth on that side being pink.
    • In Wii Funkin, Matt's sudden bursting into tears is borrowed from a fanmade crossover between the two mods, also doubling as a Take That! towards it and other low-quality crossovers.
    • The mod Friendly Night Funkin' has its substitute for "Winter Horrorland" involve a facsimile of the Corruption, albeit one caused by entirely separate circumstances than in canon.
    • Corrupted Boyfriend and the mod itself is shown in the Friday Night Funkin' Logic series, about twice, although the videos take their own spin on the mod's plot by having Daddy Dearest be the cause of the Corruption. At least at first.
    • One of the various covers in Hotline 024 is a cover of "Deathmatch"; the cover itself also takes inspiration from an official scrapped B-Side remix of the song.
    • When Monster introduces himself during "Shiver" in Friday Night Funkin': B-Side Remixes, Evil Boyfriend appears on the arcade cabinets' monitors.
  • Schedule Slip:
    • Prior to the "Vs. Daddy Dearest" videos, each video was uploaded every Saturday; following the final "Vs. Senpai" video, the releases became much more sporadic, due to the increase of quality, effort, and polish put into the following Weeks.
    • While production was going slowly but smoothly, Phantom Fear's computer died in the middle of June 2022, halting the mod until he either got it fixed or got a new one.
  • Shrug of God: The team's official stance on how mod characters would fare against the corruption is simply an "I don't know," adding that the onus of deciding whether or not a character would be immune or resistant is up to their original creators.
  • Star-Making Role: This mod is the entry point into high-profile FNF mods for composers Saster, Fluffyhairs, SimplyCrispy, and Saruky. All would become very prominent composers and/or remixers in the community because of Corruption’s popularity. And as of the official game's WeekEnd 1 update, Saster and Saruky have both appeared in the game's credits, Saster as a featured guest musician, and Saruky under the Music Production side of the Crew.
  • The Other Darrin: In the intro for Week 8, the roar Soul Boyfriend lets out was done by Phantom Fear; Saster would later provide Soul Boyfriend's actual speaking voice for the rest of the Week.
  • Throw It In!: Soul Boyfriend randomly pulling out an electric guitar during "Neuroses", along with his obsession with rock and metal in general, was based on an equally random idea co-creator Pincer had while working on the sequence for that song. "Discharge" was also rewritten to accommodate for the overwhelming popularity of said electric guitar sequence.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • There was originally going to be an official "corruption" week for Whitty, included as part of the "WhitMore Mod". With the cancellation of said mod out of respect following Whitty's creator leaving the fandom, the "corrupted Whitty" idea was scrapped and he was given a cameo in "Deathmatch" as compensation.
    • When coming up for the design of Soul Boyfriend's guitar, Phantom Fear experimented with an axe-shaped guitar. The designs were polled with the other developers and it lost to the final design.
    • The plot for "Roots" was originally going to be a more climactic and oppressive battle between Boyfriend and Spirit, but was rewritten into the Despair Event Horizon scene it is now after GRYSCL wound up producing music more appropriate to such a mood than an actual fight.
  • Word of God: Phantom Fear and PincerProd have divulged the following in the former's Discord server:
    • The corrupted, in classic zombie style, can't open doors.
    • Pico is wrapped in chains because his decaying mind, under the influence of the corruption, decided to attack a chain fence.
    • Soul Boyfriend is a huge guitar aficionado, which explains why he pulls one out during "Neuroses" and "Discharge".
    • Spirit and Senpai aren't actually the same character: rather, after a certain point during Week 6, Spirit takes control of Senpai's body and begins speaking through him, explaining his dialogue during "Treacherous Thorns".
    • In an interview, Phantom Fear said that the Tankmen died because Evil Pico killed them by blowing up their faces, and since they were dead, the corruption turned them into undead beings insteant of corrupted beings.
