Hey! It's getting friendlier on a Friday night!
Friendly Night Funkin'
is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by AjtheFunky with help from GenoX, Scyrulean, and TsukkiTsu. It overhauls the entire game up to Week 6 with a brand new story, characters, and songs.
The mod centers around 8 year old Lexi Robin, whose family are out on vacation, and 16 year old Aoki Izumi, Lexi's babysitter. Over the course of a few weeks, the two get in a wide variety of antics.
On August 29, 2021 the “Small update before the big update” released, which includes a new menu background, new character sprites, new voices for Aoki and Veronica, altered songs/charts, and more.
This work contains examples of:
- The Cameo: The characters from the base game all appear in the background of Week 5. An update also added Tactical Cupcakes in the background of that week.
- Composite Character: In Week 6, Monika fills the role of both Senpai and Spirit.
- Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Boyfriend and Girlfriend were a couple who'd rap against various opponents in an effort to get Daddy Dearest to approve their relationship, all while putting their lives on the line. Lexi and Aoki are a child and babysitter duo who sing with mostly friendly opponents with no motivation other than having fun.
- Dark Fic: Inverted. Friday Night Funkin' was a game filled with swearing, sexual themes, and violence. Friendly Night Funkin has none of this, and is mostly innocent and cheery. Even when ??? appears, it doesn't get nearly as dark as the base game can get.
- Demonic Possession: Lexi gets possessed by ??? during the song "Possession".
- Demoted to Extra: As mentioned in The Cameo above, all the characters from the base game are reduced to background appearances in Week 5 here.
- Guest Fighter: Monika originates from Doki Doki Literature Club!, along with her first song, "Your Reality". She even references the game's disturbing nature by trying to warn Lexi that she's too young for the game before agreeing to sing, thinking it won't do any harm.
- Lighter and Softer: All the mature themes present in the base game are nowhere to be seen in favor of a more cheerful and friendly mood, hence the name. The worst thing that happens in this mod is Lexi getting possessed. In addition, all of Lexi's opponents with the exception of ??? are relatively nice people who befriend her, and just sing with her for fun. This is in stark contrast to the base game, where with the exception of Skid and Pump, Boyfriend's opponents were Jerkasses at best, and just plain sadistic at worst.
- Mythology Gag: Monika is in this mod because AjtheFunky used to mod Doki Doki Literature Club. Just as the original FNF was a love letter to Newgrounds, Week 6 of this mod is one to DDLC.
- My Name Is ???: The Monster stand-in is only referred to as "???".
- Promoted to Playable: Aoki becomes playable during "Possession" due to ??? taking control of Lexi.
- Shared Universe: With Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning since Lexi was originally made as an OC for that game. Baldi is confirmed to be her teacher and Playtime is her friend.
- Shout-Out: Lexi's possessed form during "Possession" is a homage to Friday Night Funkin': Corruption
