🧽 Be There AND Be Square 🧽

SpongeBob SquarePants crossed with Mega Man in a tight percise 2D Platformer.

Super SpongeBob 2 is a fangame in the style of 8-Bit NES Hummer Team Bootlegs. Be ready to jump over gaps, blow bubbles, and gather Golden Spatulas in this NES styled SpongeBob SquarePants fangame! The game is available to download on itch.io and GameJolt!

One day in Bikini Bottom, The Flying Dutchman swoops down and makes his move, striking the Krusty Krab and robs Mr. Krabs of his Golden Spatulas (Luckily Mr. Krabs manages to somewhat fight him off before being chased out). Later that day, SpongeBob is informed of this event due to a certain Pink Friend placing a map he found right by his front door... This is when SpongeBob's adventure begins!

Game includes examples of:

  • Achievement System: 3 of them are in the game. These are all based on how you beat the game. The first one is unlocked normally by beating the game the first time. The other two are for beating the game in Speedrun Mode, and beating the game without dying.

  • Adaptational Badass: SpongeBob is shown to be very capable as well as being brave in Super SpongeBob 2. He still has his "squishy moments", but this version of SpongeBob isn't afraid to get his hands dirty if it means doing what's right.

  • Ambidextrous Sprite: SpongeBob's front holes swap positions when turned to the left.

  • Amusement Park: Used in a twist. Industrial Carnival has tropes based on a Carnival as it was seen in "Hooky"

  • Another Side, Another Story: Once you beat the game, you unlock Patrick Star as a fully playable character. He is a slower more tankier version of SpongeBob. His run however is not-canon to the events of Super SpongeBob 2.

  • Anti-Frustration Features: Super SpongeBob 2 allows you to toggle on Infinite Lives if needed.

  • Beach Level: Downtown Bikini Bottom, the first Area of Super SpongeBob 2.

  • Big Bad: The Flying Dutchman.

  • Call-Back: Super SpongeBob 2 has a bunch of these.
    • The OST in Super SpongeBob 2 is based on the songs from Lost Spatula, SuperSponge, and even Battle for Bikini Bottom
    • Bosses like Kevin C. Cucumber, Flats the Flounder, and DoodleBob returning as Antagonists.
    • To the final boss being The Flying Dutchman, which references old SpongeBob games where he played that role.
    • Flats has a hidden function with one of his attacks, if SpongeBob stays too close to him as he punches, SpongeBob goes flying into the spike pit in the middle of the arena, referencing how Flats' punches couldn't actually hurt SpongeBob.
    • When you defeat a boss and collect the Golden Spatula, SpongeBob jumps up and does a standing still version of the Theme Song animation as a celebration dance.
      • Once the screen is about to fade to black, a Bubble Transition directly pulled from the show makes an appearance.
    • SpongeBob's health. Much like in SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, he's wearing three pairs of underwear right now!
    • The Invincibility powerup (a Triple Gooberberry Sunrise) and Dennis are shoutouts to the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
    • Patrick first appearing in Industrial Carnival is a subtle reference to the Patrick Boss Fight in SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom as that boss takes place in Industrial Park.
    • Master Udon and Sergeant Roderick are pretty deepcuts for SpongeBob antagonists, giving a nod to the hardcore fans.

  • Chip Tune: The entire OST is in a 8-bit NES style. Said OST was made in FamiTracker, meaning that every song in the game could/can be played on a real NES.

  • Dash Attack: Dennis has a charge forward shoulder bash as one of his attacks.

  • Death Is a Slap on the Wrist: When playing with Infinite Lives on, you never get a Game Over, meaning you can die and retry something as many times as you need to.

  • Demoted to Extra: SpongeBot SteelPants, who served as the final Boss in Battle for Bikini Bottom, is now pushed back to a Midboss in Industrial Carnival.

  • Down the Drain: Submerged Gutters.
    • Sewer stage that "canonically" takes place under Downtown Bikini Bottom.
    • The music track for the stage is an arrangement of the same theme ala Super Mario World.

  • Easter Egg:
    • The Title Screen also has a few Easter Eggs, like the Spanish version of the title, Happy Birthday message when playing on May 1st, and an Anniversary banner when playing on March 18th (The day development for Super SpongeBob 2 began
    • During Christmas time, an entirely new Title screen is present, along with an 8-bit version of Very First Christmas

  • Evil Knockoff: SpongeBot SteelPants as he appears in Industrial Carnival.

  • Foreshadowing: Within the game's events, it's constantly hinted at that the Golden Spatulas have hidden powers. By the end of the game, SpongeBob finally knows how to use said power to defeat Dennis and The Flying Dutchman.

  • Funny Background Event: In the beginning of Submerged Gutters 1, you can see a safe floating across a pipe. This is a reference to The Sewers Of Bikini Bottom.

  • Genre Shift: Super SpongeBob 2 has occasional moments where the gameplay switches up
    • In Submerged Gutters, platforming turns into a balancing act where SpongeBob has to climb and shimmy on Pipes to make it across several sections of the stage.
    • In Voltaic Foundry, Tongue Sliding from Battle for Bikini Bottom makes an appearance here as an "auto runner" of sorts.

  • Gimmick Level: Each Area in the game has definied stage gimmicks to them:
    • Downtown Bikini Bottom: Jellyfish Platforms, Breakable Walls, and the Alaskan Bull Worm.
    • Thermal Tunnels: Super Bubbles (these bounce SpongeBob high into the air), Lava Pillars, Slow Plats, and a ton of Lava everywhere.
      • Bottomless pits are Rare in Thermal Tunnels due to most pits being coated with Lava.
    • Submerged Gutters: Ceiling Crushers, Conveyor Belts, Climbing Pipes, and Rising Bubble Columns.
    • Industrial Carnival: Rising Platforms, Rusty Snap Pipes, Chop Walls, and the introduction to Patrick.
    • Frost Tip Caverns: Tons of Slippery Ice Blocks, Fire Bars, Flip Platforms, and Flame Dispensers that melt Ice.
    • Voltaic Foundry: Spiked Blocks, Up N' Down Platforms, StoneBobs (these act like Thwomps from the Mario games), and a triple jump Spatula Shield.
      • This Area has a Boss Fight at the end of each level instead of the end of every 3rd level.

  • Glove Slap: From Submerged Gutters and onwards, SpongeBob gets access to his secondary weapon, the "Special Karate Glove" that makes him stronger than usual at the cost of being close ranged.

  • Homing Projectile: Kevin, and The Flying Dutchman have an attack that homes in on SpongeBob.

  • Idle Animation: Stand still for long enough, and SpongeBob does idle animations which are references from the show.

  • Improvised Weapon: SpongeBob's Bubbles are a surprisingly effective weapon in this game.
    • DoodleBob also falls into this trope as he fights with the same Magic Pencil as seen in "Frankendoodle".

  • In Memoriam: Two instances of there being a tribute screen to Stephen Hillenburg (the Creator of SpongeBobSquarePants), after pressing Start on the Title Screen, as well as in the Credits. Gone but not forgotten.

  • Interface Screw: Submerged Gutters has an intentional speedrun skip when playing on Speedrun Mode. If SpongeBob clips into a certain spot and through the ceiling, the HUD gets messed up in the process, bugging out like a real NES game.

  • Invincibility Power-Up: Triple Gooberberry Sunrise.

  • Jump Scare: There's one of these in the intro cutscene, however it's played out to be scary for the characters, but not scary to the player.

  • Knock Back: Like many old NES games, SpongeBob receives knockback when getting hit. Luckily, there's a Shop upgrade you can buy that removes knockback when taking damage.

  • Law of 100: Collecting 100 Coins/Pennies grants SpongeBob an Extra Life, as well as a Dollar.

  • Lethal Lava Land: Thermal Tunnels.

  • Nintendo Hard: While not exactly Nintendo Hard, Super SpongeBob 2 isn't afraid to put up a pretty good challenge, unexpected from a SpongeBob SquarePants based game.

  • No Ending: When beating the game as Patrick, the game simply skips to the credits instead of playing the ending scene like it does with SpongeBob

  • No Fair Cheating: There's a built in Anti-Cheat system if you try tampering with the savedata of the game (unless you know which values to mess with).
    • However the only punishment is a slight scolding at, along with an encouraging message that they can get through the game, as well as a suggestion to turn off Lives if things get too hard.

  • Officially Shortened Title: While the full game title is Super SpongeBob 2, it's often shorted to SSB2 from the dev as well as other people, and the official-nonofficial Fraymakers mods.

  • Oh, Crap!:
    • SpongeBob has this reaction when he's about to fall into a spike pit in Frost Tip Caverns. He is saved by one of the magical Golden Spatuals that carries him to saftey. In fact, SpongeBob even directly says "crap" during this, which is a reference to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run
    • SpongeBob also has these moments when fighting Dennis and The Flying Dutchman.

  • One-Winged Angel: The Flying Dutchman has a second form when his first form is defeated, he even tells SpongeBob that he already planned for this. He disappears and reappears as a near-full screen boss, ready to fight SpongeBob. This giant form references several NES games that had giant bosses made out of background elements.

  • Promoted to Playable: Patrick Star once you beat the game for the first time as SpongeBob.

  • Protagonist Title: Super SpongeBob 2 has SpongeBob SquarePants as the main Playable Character.

  • Rotating Protagonist: Every now and then, you run into Patrick and take control of him as SpongeBob piggyback rides on him. This hints at how Patrick will play once you unlock him.

  • Shout-Out:
    • Super SpongeBob 2's gameplays is pretty much Mega Man, down to platforming and shooting with hints of split level design ala Sonic the Hedgehog.
    • Pressing F12 on the title screen gives access to a hidden Atari 2600 styled minigame, being a direct nod to that system and its games as this minigame is all about getting a highscore.
    • The bubble column boosters in Submerged Gutters are a nod to the upwards bubble columns you can build in Minecraft.
    • SpongeBob falling from the top of the screen with the "I'm Ready!" text is a huge nod to the level intro animation from various Mega Man games.
      • The rising and falling platforms in Industrial Carnival are a nod to Concrete Man's stage from Mega Man 9.
    • Patrick being a gimmick you can ride on in some stages is a nod to the Donkey Kong Country games, as well as the Crash Bandicoot games.
    • There are a handful of nods to Bootlegs as well, like Somari, Aladdin, Mickey Mania 7, and Sonic 3D Blast 5/Sonic Adventure 7.

  • Slippy-Slidey Ice World: Frost Tip Caverns.

  • Sound Test: Accessible within the main menu of the game.

  • Suddenly Voiced:
    • The Flying Dutchman is the only character to actually have any sort of recognizable sound in the game, that being a sample of his Laugh.

  • Timed Power-Up: Invincibility that lasts 15 seconds. Also ironically the only Power-up in the entire game.

  • Title Theme Drop: A sample of the SpongeBob SquarePants Title Theme is used as the victory theme after defeating a boss. Once you beat The Flying Dutchman, this only gets expanded on as a remix of the full Title Theme is played, along with SpongeBob performing several well known dances from the show.

  • Unique Enemy: Each Area in Super Spongebob 2 has a good amount of these as well as having shared enemies like Jellyfish, Sea Urchins, and Clams.

  • Unwinnable Joke Game: Playing the game on April Fools turn the game into a joke game with a ton of changed rules. The game is not beatable when played on April Fools.

  • Video Game Demake: Super SpongeBob 2 is basically the idea of "what if there was an 8-bit NES SpongeBob SquarePants game?" Furthered added as the game faithfully captures the look and feel of a NES game with its visuals, sound, and gameplay.

  • Warm-Up Boss: Kevin & Queen Jellyfish at the third, and final level of Downtown Bikini Bottom.

  • Wide Eyesand Shrunken Irises: SpongeBob sometimes gets like this, reaction to situations that happens in the game (although these are all done in cutscenes).
