     Retribution Falls
  • Frey's ever changing attitude towards his crew. The start of the novel sees him perfectly willing to cut them out of a fifty thousand ducats reward, so he could keep it all for himself and live a life of luxury. But the end of the novel sees him valuing their lives far beyond any treasure, and that his crew each deserve an equal share of any reward for all the hard work they have done.
    • What's more, at the start of the novel, Frey refuses to give up the ignition code to the Ketty Jay, even when Marcade has a gun held to Crake's forehead. It's sheer luck that the gun doesn't go off. Come the end, when they're in a similar situation, Frey doesn't hesitate in giving the ignition code to save Crake's life.
  • When Pinn saves Harkins during the battle between the pirates and the Navy. Especially since Pinn and Harkins don't seem to get along at the best of times, Pinn still doesn't hesitate when it comes to saving him.
  • The first thing Jez does when she has the Ketty Jay under her control when the rest of the crew have been captured by Dracken? She turns back to get Bess, who had been left alone in the wastelands. Crake's reaction to this is to hug Jez tightly and cry in gratitude.
    • Not to mention, Jez was convinced that the crew were going to reject her once they realised she was half-Mane. She still goes back to save them, when she could have easily ran and saved her own skin. In return, the crew accept her as one of their own, and don't probe into her past because they all have their secrets.
  • Silo and Frey's entire relationship, starting with how they met. Silo, a slave who was escaping to freedom, came across a badly injured Frey slumped in the cockpit of the Ketty Jay. Knowing he wouldn't be able to pilot the ship himself, Silo instead took care of the injured Captain, nursing him back to health. They've been friends ever since.
    • Frey is even overwhelmed by emotion at one point, and randomly hugs Silo, to the bemusement of him and the rest of the crew.
    • Silo takes a bullet for Frey, and almost dies. Frey is wracked with guilt about it, and carries the far heavier man out of danger on his back, even when they're both being shot at.

     The Black Lung Captain
  • Frey coping with his feelings towards Trinica. He never gives up on her, even when she double-crosses him and betrays him come the end of the novel, and finally accepts who she is now, rather than who she was back when they were engaged. He even grows to admire this new Trinica, and for her part, Trinica seems to feel something back towards Frey.
  • When Frey grabs Trinica's hand when the Ketty Jay's engines have failed, and she squeezes his hand back. She then later hugs him, on hearing that he isn't going to give up on her, no matter what she does.
  • Silo being the one to confront Jez about her half-Mane status, and suggesting that she faces it head on, rather than try to ignore it. He then comforts her after her Mane side is accidentally unleashed in front of the entire crew.
  • Pinn returning just in time to save Harkins from the Manes. They then team up to take on the rest of them.

     The Iron Jackal

     The Ace of Skulls

  • The father-daughter relationship that develops between Malvery and Ashua. When he briefly thinks she's betrayed them, the doc is almost sadder about that than he is about his impending execution.
  • Harkins is horrified when he briefly thinks he's killed Pinn, then overjoyed when he finds out it was just a random Awakener.
    • Minutes later, the two of them come into the range of Frey's earcuff, bickering like always. Frey, who thought he'd lost the whole crew except Silo, is overwhelmingly relieved by the sound of their familiar sniping.
  • After four books of working against each other, trying to kill each other, and going through hell for each other, Darian and Trinica finally sail off into the sunset together.
