• Creator's Pet: In the early books, Jez is easily the least dysfunctional member of the crew, forming close relationships with everyone and contributing to every challenge. Her only flaw is her half-daemon heritage, which is Cursed with Awesome more than anything else. Downplayed in the later books, as being part Mane begins to weigh more on her, to the point where she's barely human by the end.
• Magnificent Bastard: Maurin Grist, the title character of The Black Lung Captain. After double-crossing the crew and stealing the latest macguffin, Grist forces Frey to spend the rest of the book chasing him. Aware that his smoking habit is killing him, Grist decides that the best solution is to summon the Manes and join their immortal hive mind, apparently with every intention of becoming some sort of Mane god once he joins. While he ultimately fails, he goes out in the most metal way possible, facing down an army of Manes and demanding which one of them wants to test them first.
