WMG / Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

Go To

Aside from the fact that they share an identical backstory and personality (a lot of attention is paid to pointing out that Niko always wanted to go to school and be useful to the world. - The two key character traits known of Labrys' mother.), Persona 4: Arena Ultimax also reveals that Labrys' mother has indeed been deceased for a while and that the Inaba Municipal Hospital (where Niko lived and died) was used by the Kirijo Group to hold patients involved in their experiments. The only difference apparent is that Niko lacks the Kansai accent that Labrys' mother passed on to Labrys herself, and this is easily explained away as playing into Persona Q's theme of change: Labrys' mother was quite obviously still very young when the data necessary for the fifth generation personality patterns was taken from her, so by the time she died (in Inaba, as Niko), her language would have adapted to the way the nurses and other patients around her spoke, eliminating her Kansai-accent. It's also worth noting that Rei and Labrys, despite not sharing a voice actress, have rather similar voices in Japanese.

Most tellingly, however, Aigis (who canonically holds a copy of Labrys' memory in her data storage) has a strong reaction when she first meets Rei, which is very akin to her reaction upon first meeting Labrys in Persona 4: Arena (she says that she feels drawn to Rei and wants to know more about her, tho she doesn't know why). As this is never explained in Persona Q (unless I missed something) and Niko can't be Aigis' mother, as Aigis' mother is clearly shown to be still alive in the canonical Drama CDs, this is most likely the creators' way to cement Niko's identity as Labrys' mother as canon without giving it spotlight that might detract from the main story-line.

Alice is the villain of the game.
Note how some of the bosses featured in the trailer have an "Alice in Wonderland" vibe.
  • Jossed. The villain is Chronos.

Alternatively, Rei and Zen are Alice and Nebiros, respectively.
Belial may come later in the game as either a third OG character or a Final Boss.

Zen and Rei are the cause of the tower; they want to be together.
Rei likely died in Gekkoukan High shortly before/around the time of Persona 3; Zen moved to Yasogami High School (hence his having their uniform) ie Persona 4 but found a way to get her back by tying the timelines together. Whatever the villain; the climax will involve Zen having to let Rei go.
  • Or getting them both to willingly let go and Zen to go with her.
  • Confirmed in the sense that both Zen and Rei are the cause of the tower, as Zen created the fake Yasogami High from Rei's memories. However, Jossed in the sense of the idea that it being because both of them want to be together or that the climax is involving Zen having to let Rei go.

The 'Miss' and Miss Yasogami pageants will occur in this game, too
That way they can show all the girls in their swimsuits (including newcomer Rei and hopefully Naoto this time, as well), do drag images for the Persona 3 boys, and show everyone in their non-SD forms once.

SEES and the Investigation Team will come to conflict in the middle of story, and the choice to follow whose storyline is actually Order Versus Chaos route choice.
In the trailers, there are times where both sides seem note that they only work together because of common goal of escaping the Labyrinth. There will be some sort of decision that breaks the coalition of what they should do, most likely about Rei, and both teams end up clashing because of different opinions and ideologies. SEES is Law Route with Rei as Law Hero, while the IT is Chaos Route with Zen as Chaos Hero. There's no Neutral Route because both sides can end up compromising with right decisions, but the initial clash can't be avoided.
  • Jossed. The team stays together to the very end without any Order Versus Chaos conflict or something similar.

The game will feature their own version of F.O.E. in a form of either a miniature Reaper or a Red Shadow.
Because the game's gameplay is similar to Etrian Odyssey, its likely that something similar to its F.O.E. Possible candidates to fill that role would be miniature version of the Reaper (with the regular Reaper fulfilling its role from Persona 3 and/or Persona 4, or a red Shadow to make it clear that the Shadow is not an ordinary encounter.
  • A Famitsu article confirmed that this game has F.O.E.s, but we don't know exactly what they are.
    • The F.O.E. seem to change between dungeons. For example, the first dungeon has card-based F.O.E. and another variant is a baby riding on a man wearing a horse mask. So where one type of F.O.E.s are jossed, the chance of either having the Reaper or a red Shadow appear as a F.O.E. in a dungeon is yet unknown.
    • Confirmed. The Reaper is the F.O.E. of the final dungeon.

The two teams didn't forget each other completely
That's why they were so friendly to each other in Persona 4: Arena.
  • Confirmed. It's stated that, while inaccessible, their memories of the events have residual effect on their emotions. That is why several pieces of dialogue in Ultimax show a sense of familiarity between the two parties.

This game's theme is about loss of innocence and is a side-effect of Persona 4: Arena Ultimax
I'll let this link explain it all.
  • Jossed. This game is not affected by the above game.

There'll be cameos of some sort from the Etrian games
Seriously, it's from the Etrian staff, the title of the damn game is a pun on the Etrian series name in Japan, and it's basically what we're getting at the moment in lieu of an Etrian 5. There's no way a few folks, like Shishou and Medigirlnote  from EO1, the EO4 Adventure Duo (the bob-cut Landsknecht & pigtailed Fortress), or a few of the enemies like the elemental dragon trio won't appear as a nod to the Etrian fans who are clearly the other target market for the game.
  • The last may be especially likely given that they wouldn't even need to create new 3D models - since the game seems to be using the Etrian 4 engine as its base, you can just put the dragons, or a few other famous enemies, straight into the game.
  • Unfortunately, Zeus is all we get.

The Persona-users are already dead.
The bell was one of the first things they heard in the story.
  • Jossed, as nothing like that is ever brought up in the story.

Rei and Zen will be split up at some point in the plot.
They already have separate skill lists. It doesn't seem impossible that this could occur if they take separate sides in a later conflict, or one of them is captured. Bringing along this nerfed character might even be required for a specific ending.
  • Confirmed; after the fourth stratum, Rei leaves or gets kidnapped by the final boss, to be precise. Zen still has all the skill, though.

The various groups will split up again at some point in the endgame.
Either Zen and Rei or the other party (or both) will leave the player party at some point during the plot, leaving the player with a smaller group to face the endgame with. After making their teaming up such a big part of the advertisements and midgame plot, Atlus would do something like that.

Alternately, the above will happen, but only if the player screws up the prerequisites for the better ending.

  • Jossed. The teams don't split up at any point in the game.

The apparent natures of Zen and Rei will be different depending on whose path is being played.
There may or may not be a True answer beyond these which can be discovered for a True ending.
  • Jossed. There is no true answer which leads to supposed true ending. The natures of Zen and Rei are consistent with both paths.

A future Persona game will have SEES and The Investigation Team up to save P3MC.
Margaret kind of hints at this in the Persona 4 path, and with all the other various crossovers... it only makes sense.

Rei's friend...
And I'm being so vague because I just can't use spoiler tags in WMG title posts. Basically, the girl that wrote that letter for Rei/Niko was Yumi Ozawa, the Acting Club's Sun Social Link in Persona 4. She's around the right age, so why not?
  • This is impossible for several reasons: A) Niko died 12 years ago (it's not made explicite which twelve years ago. Given Niko must have been at lead least 14 when she died and her friend is mentioned to be older than her, she would at very least be in her twenties, maybe even thirties by the time of PQ. And B) Niko's friend is named "Yuki". Not Yumi, Yuki. That's the reason Rei latches onto Yukiko early in the P4 route, by the way.

Rei's Big Eater tendencies are inspired by Buddhist cosmology.

This WMG involves serious spoilers, so it's advisable to play the game before reading further.

In Buddhism, there is a class of beings called Pretas. Traditionally, these are seen as spirits undergoing extreme levels of suffering. Since suffering is intimately connected to desire, this often manifests as drastic hunger and thirst (sometimes for disgusting things like feces or urine, but often just for normal food and drink).

This idea, as it diffused into pop culture, led to Pretas being called "hungry ghosts". While obviously Rei isn't literally a Preta, it's hard to ignore the fact that she's deceased, is constantly hungry, and was designed by people with a cultural idea of starving spirits roaming the countryside looking for food.

Her attributes are also resist dark, weak to light which is the same as the Preta demon in most Mega Ten games.

The alternate Yasogami High School is made out of Ideal Energy.
  • In Persona 2, Ideal Energy is generated by the hopes and dreams of the human psyche. It would make sense that this is the case since Zen made the entire high school out of Rei's wishes and memories.
