Nice cooking, Fry...
Come on... it's a game inspired by the Paper Mario series, how could it not be chock full of hilarious moments?!

Moment Subpages are Spoilers Off. You Have Been Warned.

  • Vi’s greed quickly becomes a Running Gag, but nothing sums up her personality better than her response to Kabbu after they help Chuck cut his grass.
Kabbu: Come on, Vi, helping others is its own reward! (and you didn’t do anything...)
    Vi: It’s really, really not.
    • By player's choice, Vi can also rudely demand a reward from the Queen herself. The reactions of the characters are priceless: Kabbu panics, Zaryant gets mad, and the Queen herself will get amused by Vi's attitude, snarkingly complimenting Maki's judge of character.
    • Post-game, when Team Snakemouth takes Rebecca's quest, Vi once again tries to request the reward, and at this point, Kabbu finally gets fed up with her attitude and shuts her up. One could very easily imagine him giving her a Dope Slap.
Kabbu: We promise to keep her safe.
      Vi: For a good pri-
      Kabbu: Not today!
      Vi: Ow!
  • Showing off the Bug Ranger doll (in place of the right item in quests) can sometimes illicit interesting reactions, and they're quite varied.
  • The Action Commands in battle are pretty easy to land generally, but failing to do so results in pretty funny scenes.
    • Vi will trip as she tosses her Beemerang, and will Face Plant on the ground as it barely hits the enemy.
    • Kabbu will recoil backwards in surprise and land on his back.
    • Leif's hand will freeze up, forcing him to shake it off in pain.
    • Chompy will waddle up to the enemy, open its mouth, and faceplant. This will happen whether you miss the button input or if it tries to target a flying or underground enemy.
  • Trying to cook something and failing leads to a "Mistake", an item with negligible healing power. But if you then try to cook just the Mistake? You get a Big Mistake; a food so bad that it's covered by Pixellation, and if you dare bite into it despite all warnings, a character's health drops to a single hit point. It's so bad, it doesn't even get a proper description: it simply says "Please don't." And cooking two Big Mistakes makes... a regular Mistake.
  • This Banter about the ant guard en route to the Lost Sands.
Vi: Is this the soldier that was guarding the Snakemouth Gate?
Kabbu: Hm... No, this seems to be someone else.
Leif: How can you tell? Most soldiers look alike.
Kabbu: It's the glimmer in her eye! The aura she radiates!
Vi: ...There's numbers on the armor.
  • You can ask a chef to cook the Clear Water item for you, which will result in... a Clear Water. They evaporated the water, repackaged it, and handed it back to you.
  • While traveling and coming across a crank, Vi says she can use her beemerang to spin it for them... for a fee. Leif holds up a hand and begins charging his ice magic. Vi then proclaims the fee is zero berries.
  • During the festival, Levi and Celia decide to drink Berry Juice together. Levi tries to tell Celia to hold back on the Berry Juice, which she clearly doesn't listen to. You can find them following Acolyte Aria's boss fight passed out in the inn, clearly hungover. Kabbu awkwardly decides to give them some privacy.
  • The festival eating contest has Zasp attempt to enter to win the offering. Despite how he acts, during the competition, he suffers a stomachache half-way through and can't continue, guaranteeing he never wins.
  • The mere fact despite being fully capable of flying, Vi refuses to use this ability to fly her teammates, even when there were plenty of times she could have used it to make things far easier. In fact, you don't get access to the ability in the overworld until rather late in the game, after Queen Elizant basically orders for her to do it to cross a gap with no clear alternative way.
    • Also the fact that once you do get access to it and use it, Leif just hovers along behind Vi (carrying Kabbu) on a floating ice block he makes, sitting casually without any apparent exertion, and it's even big enough for any accompanying NPCs or Chompy to join him. Makes one wonder why Leif doesn't just carry all three of them himself.
  • During the banter regarding the Termite Kingdom's entrance:
Vi: The Termites live here? Really?
Leif: Not the most inviting of entrances, that's for sure.
Kabbu: Do not judge, my friends. Some of the most astounding technology lays beneath this dome!
Vi: You can be smart and look ugly, you know...
    Kabbu: That's not what I...(sighs)
    Elizant: (*snicker*)
  • In Defiant Root, you encounter Morty, who offers his pet bed bug as a way for travelers to take a nap to recover. Leif, however, takes more interest in the bed bug, to the point where the idea the bed bug could be rented out to another team makes him plea for the team to continue renting out the bed bug.
  • If you attempt to use the Green Ranger Plush in the slot the Sandcastle Key goes to, Kabbu will complain that it will get all sandy.
    • Earlier, if you use it in place of the Sun or Moon offerings to Venus, Kabbu freaks out and demands it be returned. Funny enough, the flower seems like it would have accepted this offering, and only attacks because of Kabbu trying to get it back!
    • Part of Jaune's trading quest involves trading a doll to a young kid in the Ant Kingdom, who we find out Kabbu has babysat at least once. If you offer her the Green Ranger Plush, she says she already outgrew that show. Kabbu looks downright devastated.
    • In the "Lost Toy" quest, if you offer Tod the Green Ranger Plush in place of his lost ball, he is so excited and asks if he can really have it, but Kabbu demands for his team to give it back to him, much to Vi and Leif's amusement.
  • An easy-to-miss dialogue occurs during the quest "Theater Help Wanted!"; if you, during the second act (a fight with a Thief and a Bandit), let both enemies escape with your items, they actually flee the theater, much to Team Snakemouth's confusion, until Leif improvs the scene by claiming that the battle invigorated them. Outside, you can hear a voice call for security, pretty much confirming that the bandits you fight in the second act are actual bandits, who used their roles in the theater as an excuse to find a way to steal items there.
  • When you examine Kali in her shop:
Kabbu: "Ms. Kali’s made quite a name for herself in town! Her wares are very popular."
Vi: "Eh, they’re way too expensive."
    Leif: "And we’re already beautiful."
    Kabbu: (Beat) "Al...right?"
    • Later on, Kabbu gets his befuddlement revenge while examining Madeleine in Golden Hills.
Vi: "Madeleine’s got some good style going on."
Leif: "Vi, ever thought of carrying an umbrella around?"
Vi: "Nah, I’d just get tired. Hey, Kabbu, what about you?"
Kabbu: "Hmm. You think I should try it? I could look so pretty!"
Leif: "Err, sure. If you say so..."
  • Each of Team Snakemouth's reactions with the Bee Kingdom's scanner. Kabbu is panicking, Leif is twitching back and forth with ice magic ready, and Vi between them stand passively unimpressed (since she's likely been through it plenty of times, having lived there before).
  • This moment. Kabbu is recognizing Mothiva's contribution during the Bee Facotry mission, but he's also putting her on the same level as Gen and Eri. She must be steaming. And Kabbu doesn't even realize he's doing it, because he doesn't look down on Gen and Eri.
  • The implication that the Midge Broodmother you fight at the Power Plant has apparently dealt with Wasps (judging by their spears left behind) prior to Team Snakemouth coming in. Which means she had accidentally interrupted an invasion by them by being in the way and chasing them off.
  • For the sidquest "Explorer Check!", if you put together the names of all the characters involved in this quest, you get Gen, Eri, Cenn, Pisci, or... "Generic NPC". It's the punchline to a joke that begun with Gen and Eri's names all the way back at the beginning of the game, yet the most impressive aspect of this is that all of the individual names look fine in a vacuum.
  • The Watcher's HP is 69. That is all.
  • The Oh, Crap! face General Ultimax dons when you defeat all his minions in his Mini-Boss fight is wonderful.
    • Even funnier is the fact that Ultimax's only form of attack is running up and slapping you silly.
  • You can cook Cherry Bombs in the microwave.
  • When accepting a quest from an NPC in the Termite Kingdom:
    NPC: You'll laugh at me...
Vi: I promise Kabbu and Leif won't.
  • Leif's main thought when he realizes that Team Snakemouth has become famous across Bugaria? That they should have picked a cooler team name.
  • Examining your surroundings on Metal Island gets this exchange:
Kabbu: Goodness! They've truly created an artificial island!
    Leif: Is that...safe?
Kabbu: Well, everyone seems quite calm, so...
Vi: Sorry, guys. If it sinks I'm flying away!
Leif: (holds up ice magic) No you're not. You're drowning with us.
    Vi: Nooo!
  • There's something funny about Chompy, who is invincible being able to No-Sell such attacks including the Wasp King's fire pillar (even though it kills the rest of your party) or The Beast's attack that instantly kills Leif and Vi (although she disappears from the rest of the battle if she's in said battle).
  • Getting caught during the stealth section in the Wasp Kingdom, despite Maki implying that it could lead to a Non-Standard Game Over, simply restarts the player back to a previous position in the room with Kabbu explaining the failure as if it were a "what if" scenario.
    Kabbu: "...And that could happen!"
  • Once the Everlasting King is defeated, the roach elder of the Dead Lands Roach Village tells the other roaches that they are free to do as they please as they are no longer bound by their duty to guard the Everlasting Sapling due to said Sapling existing no more. While some roaches decide to still remain in the village, one overeager roach exclaims that he's ready to get the heck out of there.
  • Earlier in the game, Futes, an orchid mantis (and Author Avatar for one of the developers), is trying to get into the Wasp Kingdom, because she really, really loves wasps. She's later seen locked up in the Wasp Hive's prison, her cellmate being a friendly Wasp Scoutnote .
Futes: Hehehehe... I got thrown here on purpose. So many Wasps~
    Blue-Bandana Wasp Scout: (Help...)
  • Kabbu and Vi's Fly Drop attack is very powerful, to the point that it can rip off big chunks of enemies' HP, and it's very cheap to cast, so it can be used over and over again. Therefore, it is entirely possible to badly injure or even defeat bosses by repeatedly bonking them over the head with Kabbu like a hammer!
  • During the Superboss fight with Team Maki, Maki will get a permanent attack buff after Yin is defeated. If Kina was already downed when this occurs, she gets so mad at the fact that he powered up when Yin went down but not when she did that she revives in order to complain to him about it.
Kina: W-WHAT!? You're powering up 'cuz YIN went down!? WHAT ABOUT ME!? GRRRRRR...!
Maki: I-It's not like that, Kina... Yin's barely an adult!
  • A Bad Book can be found in the Wizard's Tower, next to his cauldron. After picking it up, the Wizard starts yelling at the team for taking his stuff... before realizing the book was a terrible one he didn't like and tells them to take it with them on their way out.
    • Assuming that this is the last Bad Book you give to Reeves, he will explain that it actually has great writing, but then reveals that the story commits the great sin of everything being All Just a Dream (and that the main character gets randomly crushed by a rock at the end). Reeves can't even bring himself to keep it for his Bad Book collection, instead deciding he will just burn it.
  • Whenever Leif takes "damage" during a Spy Card duel, he'll do his "hurt" animation while looking injured during his next turn. Meanwhile on the sidelines, Kabbu will be freaking out while Vi will just look annoyed.
  • Buying all the missing recipes from Yel at once will have him tell Team Snakemouth all of them in one go, exhausting himself. He insists that he absolutely needed to tell them like that.
  • After reclaiming Rubber Prison, one of the Thieves you can talk to at the Gym actually enjoys his time behind bars, giving Kabbu a crisis over a bug having such thoughts.
    Kabbu: S-Someone who enjoys prison!?
    Vi: Well, there's free food!
Kabbu: How could that possibly be a good enough reason!?
Leif: Uh oh. Kabbu's having a crisis...
  • When using the shop Amber has set up in the Giant's Lair, not having enough berries when trying to buy something will have her say that she needs the money for therapy.
  • Crashing into someone's hotel room through a hole in the wall is comedic enough (especially given how expensive the place is) but it's extra funny here because it's basically Kabbu's fault of all bugs. He admits that he saw the gap and apparently couldn't resist the urge to dig through it. And then Vi says to Carmina that she should complain to hotel management.

Bestiary Records

  • The Bestiary record of Kabbu.
An unfortunate battle caused by very alluring pheromones.
    • Even better is Kabbu's comments on said entry. Instead of offering any actual advice or strategy like any other entry, he mumbles how embarrassed he is about the battle.
    Kabbu: "...I can't believe I did that..."
  • The Spy notes for the Mantidfly have both Vi and Kabbu mistake the Mantidfly for a Wasp Scout, especially the latter. Leif, who doesn't fall for the disguise, is exasperated by his teammates.
  • Relating to the above is the Mimic Spider Spy notes, where Vi and Kabbu are spooked by the Mimic Spider, while Leif has to yell at them to stop freaking out and help.
  • Leif's Spy dialogue for the King Seedling has him try to ask Vi if they could keep the King Seedling because it spawns mini-Seedlings, which he describes as a 'cuteness factory'. He gets rejected, and clearly is a little disappointed.
  • Leif's susceptibility to Cuteness Proximity strikes again with Denmukis, caterpillar enemies in the Honey Factory with a paralyzing electric touch. He shocks himself by trying to pet it.
  • The Thief Bestiary record after a paragraph describing their abilities then goes on to mention they've been voted the cutest members of the bandits and are the first to eat in times of scarcity.
    • The Bandit Bestiary record mentions that the Bandits act like older siblings to the Thieves and enjoy gardening.
    • The Arrow Worm Bestiary records states that it's the most hated pest of the Lost Sands, and it annoys both bandits and villagers, because it, with its sharp teeth, as the description puts it, "leaves many homes with more windows than they need". It went to the point that explorers repeatedly try to lower their numbers just to get rid of them.
  • For a bit of Black Comedy, in the mission where Percussive Maintenance needs administered to the Mender robots in the Honey Factory, the team scoffs at Kabbu worried about hurting the Menders' feelings, but their Bestiary entry suggests he may have had a point.
  • Bestiary records for Team Maki's members reveal their favorite food. Kina's is Aphid Shake, Yin's is Sweet Shroom, and Maki's is… Mite Burger. That's right, Maki, the best explorer in the Ant Kingdom, who was knighted by the Queen herself as her Royal Blade, and an all-around badass warrior, has junk food as his Trademark Favorite Food.
