Fanfic / One for All and Eight for the Ninth

Go To

When Midoriya Izuku received All Might's Quirk, he wasn't expecting it to come with a bunch of ghosts. Or for it to grant him greater empathy with certain new female friends. Well, at least now he has a few teachers giving him advice better than "clench your butt cheeks and yell SMASH!"

One for All and Eight for the Ninth is a My Hero Academia Fanfic written by griffinguy24.

The story has two Spin Offs:

  • Unstable Compound, which explores Bakugo's character and his actions to atone for his past transgressions after being expelled from U.A.
  • Kyuseishu's Heroic Analysis, which is Izuku’s notes on various characters after being taught how to make a cipher, starting with One For All and the Previous Torchbearers.

The story has the following examples of...

    open/close all folders

    Tropes #-H
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Two variations where the retirements were involuntary.
    • After the Kamino raid, Izuku gives Ragdoll a new version of Search (having managed to reclaim the original version from All For One, who'd originally stolen it from Ragdoll), that is stronger than the original, and includes Diagnosis and Danger Sense.
    • Izuku manages to heal Tensei's spine (through Overhaul, also stolen from All For One during Kamino) and allows him to go back to hero duty.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine:
    • All for One gets this when Izuku, the Vestiges and the Ennead are able to steal or destroy several of the Quirks he has stolen throughout the years. In all, 23 are outright destroyed and a further eleven (including Search, Super Regeneration, and Overhaul) are stolen.
    • Dr. Garaki helped All for One create Nomus. Tomura later repays his loyalty by giving him some Quirks and effectively turning him into one.
  • Abled in the Adaptation: Upon gaining Overhaul during Kamino raid, Izuku uses the quirk to heal several people.
    • He first uses it to heal Gluttony's constant hunger and Best Jeanist's mortal injury in the chest. The former leads to the death of Chronostasis, who'd recognized the Quirk's work.
    • Upon returning to U.A., Izuku uses Overhaul on Aoyama to fix his first-generation Quirk's imperfections, providing the Required Secondary Powers to use his Quirk without injuring his stomach.
    • After gaining his Provisional License, Izuku heals Tensei's spine, allowing him to return to hero duty.
    • During the Work Studies, Izuku heals Magne's gender dysphoria, allowing her to live as a full woman.
  • Accidental Innuendo: In-Universe. During the Hero naming class, when Midnight rejects Mina's Alien Queen, Eijiro suggests Horny. When Pony explains what it actually means (after she recovers from her fit of laughter), Eijiro blushes to the roots.
  • Accidental Truth: The video published by the Meta Liberation Army to slander All Might and Izuku contains one tidbit of truth - All Might and Izuku's Quirk did come from All for One.
  • Achilles' Heel: When Toga fails to trigger Danger Sense even though she blatantly wants to murder Izuku and replace him, Izuku theorizes that Danger Sense can either be avoided if the cause is stealthy enough or if the person that represents danger doesn't see it as an attempt to hurt Izuku - since Toga believes it is a way to express her love.
    • For Mugen/All for One, it turns out to be his sociopathy. His lack of emotions means that he simply can’t care enough about anything to get what he wants- not stealing One for All, and not possessing Tomura. Ends up being a literal Fatal Flaw, as Tomura ends up killing him over the latter.
  • Actually a Doombot: In chapter 76, Izuku confronts Tomura with Toru managing to reflect back a laser attack and kill him. But it turns out to be a clone made with Double.
  • Actually Pretty Funny:
    • When Gran Torino chastises his mentee Tenya for his actions in Hosu, Tenya says that his judgement must've been impaired from multiple blows to the head (from sparring with Torino). That actually makes Torino dissolve into belly laughs.
    • While "funny" might be stretching it a bit, All For One can't help but approve of Izuku's sheer chutzpah for shoving in so many "nine" puns into his Hero name.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Due to the empathy link in One For All connecting Izuku and his polycule, the relationships between him and each of the girls plus between the girls themselves are way different from canon.
    • Thanks to the vestiges' support and influence, Izuku stops considering Bakugo as his friend. He even laments all the years he wasted letting Bakugo bully him in hopes of rekindling their friendship.
    • Then there's the relationship dynamics within both of the first-year hero classes. From the get-go, everyone in Class 1-A hit it off like a house on fire and get their own little subgroups of friends within. Meanwhile, Class 1-B has to deal with Bakugo's temper and fragile ego, Todoroki's hangups, Monoma's gadfly Anti-Hero facade, Kamakiri's Blood Knight tendencies, and Mineta's perversions, resulting in a much more fractious class.
    • While Kirishima was Bakugo's best friend in canon, here the two of them don't interact at all since they're in different classrooms, with Tetsutetsu being Kirishima's best friend instead. And while in canon Kirishima greatly admires Bakugo, here it's implied that, like the rest of his classmates, he's disgusted by both Bakugo's abrasive personality and his history as an unrepentant bully.
    • Denki and Mineta were friends in canon. Here, not only were they put in different classes, Denki is disgusted by Mineta groping Momo.
    • Without Bakugou there to sour relations before they even have a chance to form, Izuku and the rest of Class 1-A form a more positive connection with the students who came to see the class that survived a Villain Attack.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Due to having the previous users as spirit advisors, Izuku figures out Full Cowl before the practical exam, causing him to break All Might's record score at the entrance exam. Plus, there's One For All hitting the singularity much earlier than in canon that allowed it in the first place, thanks to a hidden Bonding Quirk that had originally been stolen from the lover of Stockpile's original owner. Izuku also figures out a way to keep Full Cowl running all the time without its telltale signs. This allows him to get accustomed to the Quirk and increase its power much earlier, getting Danger Sense the day of the Class President election and Float during the USJ Incident, and reaching Full Cowl 10% before the Sports Festival, while Blackwhip is unlocked during the finals against Todoroki.
    • Toru manages to come up with an initial version of her Light 'em Up Super Move during her fight with Aoyama, as she learns how to bend Aoyama's light beams to hit him back.
    • When Ochako fights Todoroki, she manages to dodge the glacier attack - and then uses her Quirk on the glacier itself, floating it before dropping it on Todoroki. The only reason the latter wins is that she drops first from Quirk overuse.
    • Unlike canon, Mustard is immune to his own gas and simply wears a gas mask for the aesthetic.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • The first seven One For All holders, minus Second and Third who ignore Izuku, all make appearances in the first chapter. The Second and Third show up in the following chapter.
    • All the girls of the canon Class 1-B along with Tetsutetsu appear in chapter three due to the reworked classes. The girls were shifted to 1-A to protect them from Mineta (who for that same reason is one of at least seven canon 1-A students shifted to 1-B).
    • Izuku's Gamma Suit, with the compression sleeves for arms and legs and reinforced boots and gauntlets, appears shortly before the USJ incident.
    • The Hosu Nomus are instead brought to the USJ by Shigaraki.
      • Due to this, the Chainsaw Nomu debuts during the attack on Hosu.
    • David Shield makes an appearance after the USJ Incident when All Might calls him for advice on how to be a father to Izuku.
    • Melissa Shield appears in chapter 11 during a video call with All Might and Izuku.
    • Re-Destro appears after the Sports Festival instead of far later in the manga, with the rest of the MLA showing up after the spring internships.
    • Mirio Togata and Sir Nighteye appear during the spring internship, instead of the autumn internship.
    • Eri and Overhaul show up during Izuku's first patrol with Mirio. Between Danger Sense and experience with both Ochako and Shigaraki, Izuku immediately recognizes Overhaul's Quirk as a five-point-touch activation and immediately captures the Yakuza leader via Blackwhip.
    • Toga appears during the Hero Killer Arc while she stalks Izuku.
    • Star and Stripe shows up at I-Island to stop Wolfram before he can attack the Expo. David Shield, who'd come to see the flaws in an old plan of his, called the American hero in before the Wolfram could show up.
    • Gentle Criminal and La Brava debut during the Work Studies arc. In canon, they appear at the School Festival arc.
  • Adaptational Explanation: In this fic, Denki's low intelligence is diagnosed as a few syndromes including dyslexia and ADHD, on account of his brain being wired differently to prevent his electrical Quirk from rendering him braindead.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Of sorts. Mr. Compress, instead of joining the League of Villains, decides to team up with Gentle Criminal and La Brava to bring out the corruption in society through non-violent means. One of their robberies leads to them finding and publishing a video of Destro's defeat to "Charger" and the latter's "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Adaptational Protagonist: Or Deuteragonist in this case for this fic's version of the "Heroes Rising" movie. With Bakugou out of the picture, Monoma takes his role as the student who has to learn how to work with Midoriya, and who gets a copy of One for All during the climax. And unlike the movie, this transfer is permanent.
  • Adaptational Karma: Bakugo and Mineta both get away with their behavior in canon and receive zero official punishment. In this story, both are placed on probation at the start of the school year and then later expelled before the Sports Festival for violating said probation*. Mineta is also stated to be facing criminal charges and a lawsuit from Momo's furious parents while Bakugo is sent to a rehabilitation program for villains.
  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • All For One's and Yoichi's sexual orientations were never revealed in canon. Here, they are both asexual. Shoto is also asexual after wondering how hard it is to keep up all the romantic emotions.
    • Izuku and the girls he bonds with are bisexual. It is an Informed Attribute in Izuku's case, since he's in a polyamorous relationship with eight girls, although he later mentions having been attracted to Bakugo.
    • A few boys like Monoma, Aoyama, Shinsou and Inasa are implied to have some same-sex attraction on account of them becoming bonded to Monoma when he gets a permanent copy of Bonding-enhanced One for All, just like Izuku and his girlfriends.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance:
    • Mr. Compress is introduced during the Training Camp arc in canon. Since he is not a member of the League here, he debuts during the Work Studies arc as a member of Gentle's crew.
    • Mustard and Spinner are also introduced during the Training Camp arc in canon. Here, they join the Meta Liberation Army during the Work Studies arc.
    • Magne, another villain who joined the League of Villains during the Training Camp arc, instead debuts during the Work Studies arc.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Aldera in canon had a few students laugh at Izuku when he said he'd apply for U.A with the principal, when Izuku did make it, congratulating Izuku warmly for making it into U.A. Here the entire place is corrupt, the grades are fixed to make Izuku look worse and Bakugo better, and the bullying is an epidemic that the teachers allow and only stop when Izuku 'gets a Quirk'.
    • The Meta Liberation Army, like many fics, takes the statements by non-leadership member Geten about Quirk-based societal structure where stronger Quirks give you a higher place in society to mean that the Meta Liberation Army is aggressively anti-Quirkless and that Re-Destro's company, Detnerat, does not provide services to them. This detail is, of course, entirely made up to make the Meta Liberation Army more evil than they are.
  • Adults Are Useless: Averted and lampshaded. Most notably, Wolfram is stopped before he could attack the I-Expo by David calling in Star and Stripe.
  • All for Nothing: The title of Chapter 74, where Mugen realizes that his plans of becoming the greatest villain in the world and living on in the body of his protege Tomura have been for naught - now that Tomura has developed enough hatred and determination for his old teacher to resist his control and will not accept his help. His physical body is reduced to a bomb that destroys Tartarus, and his vestige inside All for One is turned into a punching bag for the vestiges of all the Quirks he stole.
  • All Men Are Perverts: When Kaminari feels depressed that he's the only one tempted to spy on the girls, Izuku reassures him that everyone is tempted, they just respect the girls too much to act on it, saying the girls deserve to feel safe.
  • All Your Powers Combined: All for One is a given considering its whole premise, One for All also counts by taking other Quirks and integrating them into itself, an ability it got from the base Stockpile Quirk before combining with Yoichi's to form One for All. Through his connection with Izuku, All Might makes use of all his predecessor's Quirks during his final "United States of Smash" attack against All for One.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Nezu states this after his conversation with Karen Mineta, because, as important as she is as a member of U.A's school board, she can't do anything to the Yaoyorozu Group.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Todoroki acts like this to Bakugo. When Bakugo accuses the rest of 1-B of "trying to ride his coattails", Rin bluntly points out they'd be asking Todoroki if they wanted that as he's the one who is actually at the top of the class. Todoroki also actually bothers to remember their names unlike Bakugou, so even on a social interaction level, Todoroki comes out ahead.
    • During the preliminary matches to ensure none of them (mostly Bakugou and Mineta) do anything to potentially harm the reputation of the school, Izuku proves himself to be this to Todoroki, quickly besting him with only 8% of One for All.
    • Uraraka, due to being raised by construction workers, is better at swearing than Bakugo. Everybody else besides Izuku (who grew up with Bakugo) is shocked by this.
Monoma: Wants to be the number one hero? He's not even the number one at profanity.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Ochako's father proudly talks about her marrying Izuku, causing the two teens' "souls to leave their bodies". Then he jokes about them marrying Momo, so the two decide to just make a rush for the mansion while Ochako's mom dope slaps him.
  • And I Must Scream: Anyone who enters the vestige dreamworld for the first time can only use their eyes, as the rest of their body is a black-like substance. While Izuku easily deals with it, Ochako and Momo become terrified the first time they experience it. Ochako even nearly name-drops the trope.
  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: When Bakugo asks All Might why the latter hates him so much, All Might shares what sounds like a story about Izuku's childhood, only to reveal it was his own. This helps fuel Bakugo's Heel Realization.
  • Apple of Discord: All Might observes that Bakugo's presence in the all-male Class 1-B, specifically his fragile ego and competitive nature, is fracturing the class. Todoroki's habit of doing things by himself also puts a wedge between himself and Awase, while Mineta's perversions disturb Shoji, which does not help with class unity. All in all, it leads to a toxic environment and poor Vlad King has to deal with all that shit. The closest thing to a silver lining is that Shoda and Shishida try to mitigate the infighting, which is why Vlad appointed those two as class representatives.
  • Appropriated Appellation:
    • It was Fumikage and Reiko who suggested that Izuku's polycule be named "the Ennead".
    • Nezu's surname on his paperwork is Inokuma (犬熊). He got it from a Japanese student who was studying him in the Daintree Rainforest, who kept asking if the animal stealing her notes was a mouse, a dog, or a bear. When she was killed trying to shut down the laboratory he was being studied in, he kept her suggestion as his legal name (and his introductory Character Catchphrase) in her honor.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • Izuku drops a one-two punch on Endeavor on his aspirations to make his son be the one to surpass All Might:
Izuku: Do you know who All Might’s father is? Wait, trick question, All Might is an orphan, he doesn’t even know his own parents. [...] There are two pro Heroes who trained him, who made him the Hero he is today. Nimbus and Gran Torino. I’m aware of them, but it’s a pretty obscure piece of trivia. Do you know anything about them?
      Endeavor: No, I do not.
Izuku: Interesting. Second, this is a commonly known piece of Hero trivia, that you solve more cases than All Might does, put away more villains than he does. Now, the Hero Public Safety Commission has guarded their methods of determining the Hero Rankings quite viciously, but if it were judged solely on combat prowess, you would easily be Number One. It doesn’t matter if he’s physically stronger than you or not, you’ve beaten him in every way that strength matters. So, why are you so focused on surpassing All Might with strength? If someone could become the Number One Hero through strength alone, wouldn’t you have already reached that goal?
    • While confronting Sir Nighteye about his selfish desire to force him to surrender One for All to Mirio, Izuku hits him with one that pierces through his frosty veneer:
Izuku: Did you only train Mirio because you wanted him to be the next All Might?
    • Ochako asks why Endeavor didn’t just marry another wife (or at least remarry after Rei’s breakdown) if his only motive was to produce a child that could surpass All Might, especially since polygamy is legal in Japan. No one has an answer.
  • Armor-Piercing Response:
    • In the original version of Chapter 3, Izuku directly gives one to Aizawa, saying that his actions which caused Izuku to have trouble trusting his teacher remind him of his teachers from Aldera Middle School. It was later revised to Izuku freezing up and unintentionally dumping it in one of his mutter-storms. Either way, this shocks Aizawa who, while he has no problem admitting he's not that good of a teacher, sees their actions against Izuku as reprehensible as teachers.
    • Tsuyu gives one to Izuku, saying she heard the noise that indicates a bond has formed when she "started crushing on him".
    • Nezu gives a doozy of a response to Bakugo when the latter insists he'd never be a villain.
Nezu: Here's the problem with that statement, young man. You already are a villain. ... After your stunt today, I've submitted everything to the HPSC. The decision was swift. As of twenty minutes ago, Katsuki Bakugou, you are now an A-ranked Villain.
    • When Todoroki asks Izuku why he's so intent on winning the tournament if he doesn't care about the Number One Hero title, Izuku gets through his bullheadedness with two sharp answers:
Izuku: Because All Might isn’t going to be around forever! One day, sooner or later, All Might’s going to retire, or god forbid, die. And when he does, there’s going to be chaos. Right now, the world is watching. I want to show the world that even if he’s no longer working, that a hero will rise to replace him! That I am here! I don’t care who’s the next ‘Number One Hero’! I’m trying to be the next Symbol of Peace!
Todoroki: You... you’re serious... Then, why are you bothering trying to convince me?
Izuku: Because All Might made one big mistake in his career. He was a symbol, but he was the only symbol. If All Might died tomorrow, how many people would look at Endeavor and say, ‘Everything’s fine, I still feel safe’? We need more than one great hero. We need several. I want every single one of my classmates to be the next All Might. Your class, too. And with your power, your whole power, you can be one of the strongest pillars our society could ever have. What do you say, Todoroki-kun? Do you want to be a Hero?
(Todoroki's left side becomes engulfed in flames)
      • The impact behind this becomes amplified because not only does 1-A hear it by eavesdropping (and 1-B by eavesdropping on 1-A), Nezu manages to record it and anonymously releases the footage, where it then goes viral and forces many people to reconsider - including Endeavor, who has his Heel Realization.
    • Sir Nighteye attempts to browbeat Izuku into passing One for All to Mirio.
Izuku: I’m not going to let you kill Mirio-senpai.
  • Arrested for Heroism: Narrowly defied. After saving Yui and Izuku from Shigaraki dusting them, the cops try to arrest Nejire for Quirk Usage without a license. Even pulling out her provisional license didn't help. Eventually she was let go. Nedzu notes that the laws regulating Quirk usage needs updating but that would require the HPSC to give up power which won't happen.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The narration describes Ochako's cursing towards Bakugo as possibly having "started wars, ignited generational conflicts, and curdled milk". This directly leads into Monoma's quip under Always Someone Better above.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • The One for All Torchbearers show up in the first chapter and become a fundamental part of the plot by acting as Izuku's Spirit Advisors.
    • All the Class 1-B girls and Tetsutetsu are in 1-A now, meaning that they get more focus than in canon. The girls specifically are due to the same reason behind Mineta's initial demotion to extra.
    • Mei Hatsume gets a bigger focus, being Izuku's second bond and the one who works on his and his polycule's hero costumes and support gear.
    • Melissa Shield is Izuku's sixth bond and transfers to U.A. after the spring internship, ensuring she'll be around a lot more.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Two fangirl examples.
    • Yui, a massive tokutatsu fan, says that with Isamu and Momo's Quirks as well as Melissa and Mei's genius she can have giant mecha and use a charging attack a la Ultraman.
    • Setsuna loves dinosaurs and gets to live her fantasy of riding one during the Jurassic arc.
  • Ascended Fanon: In-Universe example. Fans have theorized for years that the Pussycats are polyamorous (The Wild Wild Polyamory, as is called), and is finally confirmed by Pixie-Bob to Izuku when he goes to visit Ragdoll at the hospital.
  • Asshole Victim:
    • Overhaul, who gets his skull crushed by All for One (though not before crippling All for One's hands in one last act of defiance) and his body washed over the sewers. The only people who care about his demise and want to avenge him are his fanatical followers, which boils down to Chronostasis, Mimic and Nemoto.
    • The President of the HPSC. After the woman is killed during a (unwilling) suicide bombing at the beginning of the MLA Uprising, no one bats an eye over it.
    • All for One himself, by the end of Chapter 74. By the end of his life, the only person who would bother to care about him would be his Mad Scientist lieutenant, Garaki, and Garaki himself finds himself suffering A Fate Worse Than Death at the hands of Tomura in the following chapter, being turned into a Nomu.
    • The MLA top brass, who all get their Quirks stolen and are killed when Tomura hijacks Mugen's body and riggs it to self-destruct, blowing up Tartarus front gate and letting the prisoners out. An appropriate fate, for a bunch of Quirkist terrorists.
  • Assimilation Backfire: When Nine tries to steal Katsuma's Quirk, Monoma jumps in the way, copying Nine's Quirk and attempting to steal Nine's Quirks at the same time Nine is trying to steal his. The resulting feedback loop ends with Monoma permanently copying all of Nine's Quirks, including his own version of All for One.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis:
    • Izuku's Quirk/hero analysis hobby gets one hell of a limelight, especially since Bakugo isn't around to call it creepy. Funnily enough, it's how Izuku links with Mei and Momo. With Mei, it was discussing his Quirk and possible support gear he would need in the future. With Momo, he went into a deep dive discussion about her Quirk and costume needs that resulted in her, and then him, heavily blushing.
    • Izuku gets this done to him by Itsuka regarding his starting All Might-inspired "punch everything" fighting style, leading him to develop a more rounded fighting style during the first week.
    • The other Class 1-A students realize there is a connection between All Might and Izuku by observing that the former gives the latter some special attention in classes. Combined with the fact All Might told only Izuku he is a new staff member at U.A., and they became even more suspicious. Tsuyu asks if All Might is Izuku's father and he is forced to reveal that All Might was training him.
    • Because Izuku learns about All For One early and that he's the brother of Yoichi, he starts investigating the other previous holders' families in case of other surprises. As a result, he learns that Nana's entire family is dead and puzzles out that "Tomura" is her grandson Tenko.
  • Awful Truth: Izuku and Inko end up crying with each other when they look into the previous holders' families and find out what happened to Nana's family, with Nana herself breaking down inside Izuku's head.
  • Backstory: Chapter 31 dives into the backgrounds of the original owners of the Stockpile and Bonding Quirks.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Izuku states that Quirks aren't inherently villainous, only people, putting Hitoshi and his Brainwashing Quirk as an example. Unfortunately, he says so to Toga, who is an example of Bad Powers, Bad People.
  • Bad to the Last Drop: Implied. When Izuku and Momo have tea with Nezu, Momo says it's an "interesting blend" while Izuku asks if it's brewed with Nezu's taste buds in mind rather than a human's. They do seem to acquire a taste for it, though, since the two of them have some when they have breakfast together the day after their date.
  • Bad Future: Upon using his Quirk on Endeavor, Nighteye sees four alternate futures:
    • The first is one where Endeavor refuses to learn from his mistakes, which results in his dirty laundry being exposed in the worst possible way, people losing their trust on heroes, and Endeavor dying.
    • In the second, Nezu attempts to pursue the case legally, but the HSPC creates a slander campaign that drags U.A. to the mud and both Endeavor and Shoto die on it. In fact, the boy dies in front of his father.
    • The last two are similar, with the last being the one that makes its way to the story, with Endeavor speaking with his cousin Hisashi, and owning up his mistakes to the public, which leads to a better future to his family.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In chapter 22, Izuku bonds with Himiko, only for the bond to sever less than a minute later when he realizes she's a Serial Killer.
  • Bastard Understudy: Mugen Shigaraki groomed Tomura into being his student and protege with the power of All for One and sufficient hatred and determination towards the world so that he would have a strong-enough will to take One for All, but when he tried to possess him into being his new body, he found that Tomura also had enough determination to resist his control as well, and will now destroy the world on his own terms, and not with his Sensei holding his leash. Tomura not only subsumes the vestige of his master inside All for One, but he also turns his old teacher's body into a bomb that destroys Tartarus.
  • Battle Harem: Izuku will have a harem in the story with Uraraka, Mei, Momo, Tsuyu, Toru, Melissa, Nejire, and Yui as members (six of whom are also Hero Course students).
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: This is Bakugo's opinion of U.A. He describes it as climbing a mountain only to realize when you get to the summit that the mountain is made of garbage.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Played with. Tomura is getting some cooperation from the Vestiges trapped in All for One by letting them beat up All for One's vestige if they tell him how their Quirks work.
  • Behavioral Conditioning: For more than 10 years, Bakugo has been able to bully Izuku without any problem because no teacher ever reprimanded him (and a few of them even praised him for his actions). Due to this, he believes his actions are perfectly fine, and thus finds himself out of his depth when everyone in U.A. who interacts with him and knows of his past behavior is clearly disgusted or outright hates him.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • Izuku is a Nice Guy, very friendly, and willing to help anyone who needs it. He will also rain hell on anyone who hurts the people he cares about, like Endeavor for what he put Shouto through or everyone who told Tsuyu her appearance was weird. And when Muscular threatened Kota and Eri, Izuku answered by giving the murderous villain the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown of his life.
    • Momo is normally a sweet girl, but when she learns about how the teachers at Izuku's middle school either ignored his abuse or encouraged it, she darkly asks for the school's name. Once Izuku mentions that Nezu's investigating them, she cheerfully comments that they won't be around much longer.
    • Ochako is a cheerful girl who likes being a Hero because it allows her to help others. She also has one of the foulest mouths at school (surpassing even Bakugo), and pressing her Berserk Button is basically a quick way to ensure your ass gets (possibly literally) kicked into orbit.
    • Chapter 61 is titled after the trope, and shows Koji having a Quirk evolution out of sheer wrath at the Arc Villain (who mistreats animals without a care), before telepathically aiming every animal in earshot at the latter.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • When it's only All Might and Izuku fighting the League of Villains (including All for One and several Nomu), all the girls manage to unlock Bonding Level 4 and teleport straight into the battlefield, giving the heroes an upper hand in the fight.
    • Two happen back to back during the MLA Uprising in Chapter 72. First Shoji who defends the residents from Mosai Ward from a Quirkist mob and then Gang Orca and his sidekicks who save Shoji when he is overwhelmed.
    • Star and Stripe arrives at Japan to help deal with the MLA Uprising at Chapter 73.
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • All Might shouts this when Nezu casually reveals that Endeavor is his next target after Aldera Middle School for practicing Quirk breeding to produce Shoto.
    • Izuku lets one out during the USJ Incident after hearing Kurogiri call Tomura by his full name. Thankfully, his mask's noise-canceling effect was turned on so his position wasn't given away.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • Eijiro and Tetsutetsu become almost instant friends due to their love for "manly" things and similar Quirks. When Izuku realizes Akira Fuki is cut out of the same cloth, he immediately brings the Gen Ed student to meet the duo (although he regrets it after seeing how far their similarities go).
    • Fumikage and Reiko quickly bond over their shared interest in everything dark and edgy. By the end of the USJ attack, they are seen holding hands. Bonus points for Fumikage looking like a bird.
    • Mina, Setsuna, and Toru hit it off right away due to their similar personalities.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Inko told all of Izuku's girlfriends when his birthday was probably to not have it be (in her own words) "subdued". There's just one problem. the birthday the girls plan on celebrating is the same day as the I-island Expo. Ultimately subverted via butterflies caused in chapter 8 and America's #1 heroine Star and Stripe being present on I-Island to thwart Wolfram and co before they have a chance to cause trouble.
  • Blaming the Victim: Karen Mineta, Minoru's mother, blames Momo for her son's actions, insisting that "If those harlots are going to dress provocatively, a few youthful indiscretions are unavoidable". Momo had intentionally opted to wear her more revealing original costume as bait as part of a Secret Test of Character.
  • Bleed 'Em and Weep: When (a Double clone of) Shigaraki fires a laser beam at Izuku's girlfriends, Toru reflects it back at him and kills him. Izuku has to comfort her that night.
  • Blessed with Suck: Takashi Nouenbou, the Business Course student that makes a proposal for Izuku to counter the MLA's propaganda. His Quirk boosts his mental acuity, stamina, and speed - but requires him to eat fermented foods like surströmming. He is very grateful when Izuku uses Overhaul to alter his tastebuds so that he no longer finds the foods he needs to eat to power his Quirk disgusting.
  • Blood Knight: Eijiro and Kamakiri are both described as greatly enjoying themselves during their match even though it ends in a stalemate.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Despite being a hero, Nezu still isn't a human and doesn't always get human morality. He still tries his best though but he sometimes needs someone to clarify something is wrong by human standards. For example, he knew of Endeavor's dirty laundry but never realized it was immoral until All Might pointed out that eugenics was considered ethically wrong.
  • Boring, but Practical:
    • The first piece of gear that Mei makes Izuku is a pair of gloves that help lessen the blowback from punching.
    • After Bakugo is captured in the Heroes vs Villains exercise, his partner Bondo wins the match by keeping the other team at bay with his glue until time runs out.
    • Izuku's main tactic for the Sports Festival's first round is to fly over all the obstacles. He wins even after going back to protect the others against frozen robots as well as clearing out a minefield in advance.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: After the MLA uprising, numerous heroes quit in part because they're worried that they won't be getting paid anymore. While it's true that society does need heroes more than ever, Ochako admits that it's a very valid concern, especially given how dangerous their job is.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Justified when Mei uses a belt-fed minigun, as the belt is being created by Momo as Mei shoots.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Nedzu admits to not always getting human mores, such as what foods are nice for breakfast, what smells are nice to humans, and the concept of war-crimes.
  • Brick Joke:
    • During Izuku and Tsuyu's date at Gang Orca's aquarium, his internal monologue mentions how Shishido bet on Izuku being in a polycule. When Tsuyu reveals the truth during her internship, the next day she hears him mutter about Shishido.
      • When Mt. Lady meets Yui before the Kamino raid, she also mentions how she had bet on her and laments that Shishido won.
    • Yoichi says that All Might's first words once he becomes a vestige would be "I am here, in your head". When Melissa reaches a level 2 bond, one of the first things All Might says when he realizes he is now able to communicate via the bond is: "Apparently, I am here in your heads."
      Yoichi: Called it.
    • During a conversation between the polycule they talk about why Nezu is spending so much money on Izuku. When Toru jokes that Izuku's a teacher's pet, Izuku responds by realizing Nezu literally sees him as a pet. Later, in one of Nezu's musings, he comments on how Izuku is his pet human.
    • During their date, Izuku learns how badly some of Tsuyu's classmates treated her and asks for their names while insisting it wouldn't be vigilantism because "A pipe wrench isn't a quirk". Nearly forty chapters later, Tsuyu reveals another way her classmates made fun of her, causing the Ennead to ask for some contact information. Tsuyu says she will if Izuku can prove he doesn't own a pipe wrench. He doesn't, but Mei does and Momo can make more.
    • In Chapter 17, when Izuku meets Rikiya Yotsubashi (Re-Destro), he calls him out on his company's shoddy customer service, because they wouldn't make shoes to fit him. 54 chapters later, when Inko rips Re-Destro's teeth and punches him in the kidney, she mentions half the reason she did it was her lingering frustration of having to deal with Detnerat's customer service when Izuku was six.
  • Broken Pedestal: Mirio is devastated when Izuku confirms that Sir Nighteye was grooming him into being the new holder of One For All and wanted Izuku to give it to him; he was still trying to come to terms with his mentor's death, and now his memories are tainted with the knowledge that he was being used. Izuku also tells him that Nighteye abandoned his efforts when he learned about the fourth wielder's shortened lifespan, and insists that Nighteye cared about him because he's Mirio.
  • Brutal Honesty: Hawks admits to Fumikage that one of the reasons he sent him an internship/work study offer was because the HPSC told him to bring in someone from 1-A, preferably Izuku.
  • Bullet Time: When Bakugo is about to use his grenade attack on Ochako, the bond between her and Izuku levels up and lets her move incredibly fast for a few seconds, enough to dodge the attack and throw Bakugo out of the ring. Bakugo's attack is what gives Nezu the excuse to expel him.
  • Burning the Ships: The Tea Spillers do this by revealing everything they've found on the HPSC - which includes stuff like Hawks being a slave in all but name and Lady Nagant's murders.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday:
    • Dr. Garaki doesn't even remember which of his grandchildren he used to create the winged Nomu. He only barely remembers Izuku, if only because he was born Quirkless.
    • When Izuku mentions Hitoshi Marubashi and Shizuku Kendai, All for One doesn't know who he's talking about until Izuku mentions they were the original bearers of Bonding and Stockpile.
  • Butt-Monkey: Vlad King, whose unbelievably dysfunctional classroom quickly drives him to alcoholism.
  • Call-Back: When Izuku sees Death Arms and Slugger among the group of Pro Heroes threatening a protesting crowd, he tells Miruko not to bother with them.
Izuku: Odds are good they'll say their Quirks aren't suited for this and stand there watching.
  • The Can Kicked Him: All For One drowns the germaphobic Overhaul in a dirty prison toilet after stealing his Quirk due to Overhaul using his Quirk to mangle AFO's hands while his Quirk was being stolen.
  • Cassandra Truth: Izuku tells a pair of members of the Shie Hassaikai that All for One murdered Overhaul. Even though he is under the effect of a Quirk that forces him to say the truth, the villains don't believe him. During the Kamino Ward Raid, Chronostasis realizes Izuku was truthful after seeing him use Overhaul on Soramitsu Tabe to stop his Quirk's side effect, but All For One kills him before he can turn on him.
  • Cast Full of Gay: The majority of Izuku's class, along with several others such as the Wild Wild Pussycats, are explicitly stated to be bisexual. While Shoto, Yoichi, and Mugen are all stated to be asexual, Word of God has stated that unless stated otherwise, it can be assumed any given character is bisexual.
  • Caught on Tape:
    • Bakugou confronting Izuku and the teachers not doing anything to protect the latter is all caught on tape by another student, and uploaded onto the Internet. Nezu discovers the video and shares it with his staff and they all realize Bakugou is going to be a problem. Nezu also begins investigating Aldera Middle School to uncover any other crimes they might be hiding. Bakugo ends up giving Nezu the excuse the principal was looking for to expel him.
    • Similarly, Mineta is caught groping Momo by the U.A. security cameras during the test/spar Nezu set up for the First Year students. Said groping gives Nezu the excuse needed for his expulsion (because the video of Bakugo bullying Izuku and the teachers doing nothing to stop it caused Nezu to do more thorough background checks and discovered Mineta's history of sexual harassment).
  • The Chain of Harm: Defied by Hisashi Midoriya, who had a terrible childhood with a father who outright disappeared on him and a mother who largely neglected him before foisting him off to her relatives, who soon put him in the foster system, which was clearly not nice to him. Rather than ending up subjecting his child to any abuse borne out of his bad temper, he decided to leave and provide for him and his ex-wife Inko even if he never saw them again.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • When Bakugo tries to attack Izuku after the Entrance Exam results are released, there's a mention of another student filming everything with his mobile phone. During the teachers' meeting to decide where each Hero Student goes, Nezu shows the teachers that same video to ensure Izuku and Bakugo are kept in different classes (as well as all the girls and Mineta after said video caused Nezu to do more thorough background checks through which he discovered Mineta's history of sexual harassment). Bakugo doesn't make it to the Sports Festival, due to ignoring an order by using a lethal attack on Ochako (that she dodges thanks to a sudden Bonding level-up) giving Nezu the needed excuse for expelling Bakugo.
    • During his debrief on his encounter with Shigaraki, Izuku notes that he likely has a five-point touch-based activation Quirk. When the teachers come to the USJ, Snipe takes aim and shoots off Shigaraki's finger rather than shooting his palm as in canon, causing him troubles with that hand - which ends up saving Izuku's life when Shigaraki uses that hand to attempt to kill him.
    • When Shigaraki recruits the Shie Hassaikai, there's a mention of the Quirk-erasing bullets Overhaul was creating. During the attack at the Summer Camp, Chronostasis shoots Izuku with one to capture him for All for One. Said bullet turns out to be one of the temporary ones later on.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: The teachers note this quite early in Izuku after All Might tells them about the Sludge Villain, and point out it is something they need to break him out of soon since while it is admirable, at his level of training, it is also highly suicidal.
  • Cliffhanger:
    • Chapter 40 ends with Izuku temporarily losing One for All due to a Quirk-erasing bullet and captured by the League of Villains.
    • Chapter 43 ends with the Ennead teleporting to Izuku during the Kamino Raid, and preparing to fight off the League of Villains.
    • Chapter 72 ends with Sir Nighteye going into a panic after using his Quirk on Curious to see a horrifying future, and is killed by Slidin Go before he can warn anyone about it. Chapters 73 and 74 add onto this with the reveal that Tomura is now in full control of the All for One Quirk, imprisoning Mugen Shigaraki deep in the Quirk's vestige world and using the power to remote-control his body to break out of Tartarus. From there he steals the Quirks of the MLA's leadership before killing them, before blowing up AFO's body alongside Tartarus, and follows it up by giving Geten's ice Quirk to Dabi, Re-Destro's Stress Quirk to Gigantomachia, and finally attacks the Tea Spillers and steals Twice's Quirk.
  • Cluster F-Bomb:
    • Ochako gives one that only Izuku hears when she sees that the "casual eatery" Momo took everyone to is an extremely expensive restaurant that most of them might be able to go to once a year for a special occasion. Izuku is quite impressed by its intensity, which considering he knows Bakugo, must have been extensive.
    • Ochako later gives Bakugou an intense verbal beatdown that leaves most of the students stunned (Bakugo is left poleaxed, Tenya goes catatonic, Pony is horrified even with her limited grasp of Japanese, and Todoroki is shocked out of his stoicism) and Vlad King is considering giving her a gift for putting Bakugou in his place.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Izuku, Ochako, and Momo realize how much work Mei has been doing, they worriedly ask her how long it's been since she last ate or slept. Mei nonchalantly replies that she made a baby to do both things for her.
  • The Comically Serious: Hikage Shinomori. Izuku notes in his Hero Analysis entry that he can never tell when Hikage is being serious or joking, and a good part of the humor around him is that he always seems to take everything seriously.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Izuku bonds with Mei, Momo, Melissa, and Nejire because of this: Mei due to their shared love of Hero support items, Momo because of their intelligence and analytical skills, Melissa for their (former, in Izuku's case) Quirkless status and love of science, and Nejire because of their Constantly Curious natures and Motor Mouths.
    • This also fits with the nature of the bonds - namely, which Vestige is in "charge" of it.
      • Ochako and Nana: loving, cheerful, Quirks that let them float and willing to pummel those who threaten the ones they love.
      • Mei and Hikage: Cloud Cuckoo Lander social outcasts with Quirks that boost their senses.
      • Momo and Yoichi: sheltered bookish nerds with a wish to aid others, with Quirks revolving around origin and creation.
      • Tsuyu and Daigoro: honest people with chill-out personalities, and quirks that allow for long whip-like attacks.
      • Toru and En: happy and using their Quirks to hide.
      • Melissa and Toshinori: Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold, Innocent Blue Eyes, (former) Quirklessness, willingness to help those who need it, and being Honorary Uncle and Niece.
      • Toga and Ryouji: killing a lot of people and not regretting it.
      • Nejire and Isamu: energy-based Quirks.
      • Yui and Ryouji: stoic Terse Talkers whose Quirks let them make things grow.
    • Izuku also becomes friends with Todoroki, Shinso, and Mirio because of this:
      • With Todoroki, because they have spent most of their lives at the mercy of an abusive tormentor with a fiery Quirk who got praised as a hero.
      • With Shinso, because both of them were social outcasts victims of Fantastic Racism and were subjected to Suicide Dares.
      • With Mirio, because not only do they share a love for heroes and helping others, but both of them have trouble learning to control their respective Quirks (One For All/Decade Force for Izuku and Permeation for Mirio). By the end of their first conversation, Mirio even calls them "Troublesome Quirk Brothers" and bumping fists with a happy Izuku.
    • Later on, Neito begins to do the same after he obtains his own version of Bonding. He bonds with Inasa during the Meta Liberation Army's uprising, likely due to their Hotblooded nature when it comes to heroics.
  • Composite Character: Here Dr Tsubasa, Izuku's Doctor from the first chapter, was one of the many fake identities used by Dr Garaki.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror:
    • Darkly played with, but Izuku, after being told for 10 years that he's worthless, among other more serious problems, sees little to no problem with actions that others would consider highly suicidal, such as running towards the Sludge Villain, charging towards Shigaraki's location when he infiltrates the school or engaging with the Nomu during the USJ incident.
    • In a more Played for Laughs way, Izuku is the only one not affected by Ochako's Cluster F-Bomb beatdown on Bakugo due to growing up with the latter and hearing the former curse once before (Ochako's cursing involved Momo).
    • He also finds himself largely unaffected by how he seems to lack everything but his eyes on his first visit to the Vestiges dreamworld. Ochako and Momo become terrified when that happens to them.
  • Costume Evolution:
    • Chapter 7 opens with Izuku, Momo, and Ochako getting costume upgrades. Ochako gets new boots based more on actual astronaut boots, with a gyroscope and a jet system to propel herself, but only because Mei had decided to make them out of her own will (inspired by an idea the bond gave her) since Ochako had not made a request. Izuku gets his Gamma costume much earlier than in canon, but the respirator has a noise-canceling function added to allow him to filter his mumbling. Momo's new costume is described as a hybrid of Setsuna's bodysuit in red and some of the armored pieces from Mirio's costume, with the utility belt solely for emergency food to fuel her Quirk, a wrist-mounted computer, and a visor with a built-in HUD. Ochako's new boots are also much more practical than the original's high heels, while Momo's wrist-mounted computer is better for her spine than the original's shelf by removing the dangers a particularly bad landing could be.
    • The I-Expo Arc shows Izuku getting two upgrades thanks to Melissa and Mei: a pair of hand wraps that allow him to use more of One for All without hurting himself and help him use Laser Disk, and a pair of boots that can be armored and have all of Mei's footwear-based inventions piled into them.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Mineta might be an unashamed pervert and wear a ridiculous costume, but he did almost manage to win his fight with Momo by throwing his balls in a way that seems aimless but is actually well calculated, letting him corner her while he pinballs between the balls. If he had concentrated on the fight rather than trying to grope Momo, he would have won.
  • Curbstomp Battle:
    • During the battle trials there were three examples:
      • Izuku and Momo vs Tokoyami and Itsuka in the former's favor. The staff responds by ensuring they don't get paired up again.
      • Toru and Kinoko vs Ibara and Uraraka in the former's favor.
      • Reiko and Setsuna vs Mina and Koji in the latter's favor.
    • The USJ turns into this, even though Shigaraki brought four Nomu with him instead of just one because All Might was present from the start and Hound Dog is also present, the teachers arrive a lot sooner thanks to Izuku pressing his panic button (he managed to press it before a Quirk-based jammer could fully kick in) and the students end up getting paired in groups with great power synergy and/or sent to places where their abilities become very useful. The worst injuries are Aizawa getting a broken arm and leg and Izuku suffering some fractures from pushing One for All too far.
      • Fumikage and Reiko are sent to the Ruins Zone. They take advantage of the poorly lit buildings to turn the place into a house of horrors.
      • Koji and Kinoko are sent to the Downpour Zone. The latter quickly spreads her fungi all over the Zone, while the few villains that avoid the mushrooms get attacked by a thriving rat colony.
      • Mina, Pony, and Itsuka are sent to the Mountain Zone. Mina rides Pony's flying horns and rains acid on the villains, while Itsuka takes down anyone that gets close.
      • Yui and Ochako are sent to the Landslide Zone. The duo goes up a mountain, touching every piece of rubble they can find, and when they reach the top Ochako releases her Quirk while Yui causes all the pieces to enlarge. Their attack is stated to be the most devastating of the fight, save for All Might's.
      • One of the Nomus gets shocked into unconsciousness after Momo shoots its exposed brain with a crossbow bolt attached to a steel wire whose other end is in Kaminari's hand.
    • In the first interclass battle, Izuku beats Todoroki in a single attack after breaking through his glacier.
    • Kinoko takes down Monoma by growing mushrooms in his throat and making him choke.
    • Several during the tournament:
      • Shinso manages to quickly defeat Momo, taking advantage of her lack of knowledge over his Quirk to make her walk out of the ring.
      • Todoroki does his usual glacier move on Pony and Eijiro.
      • Izuku defeats Akira Fuki without getting touched.
      • He also throws Shinso out of the ring a second after the fight begins. Thanks to the encounter happening later in the fighting tournament than canon, he knows about Shinso's Quirk.
    • Overhaul gets taken out by Izuku, who restrains him with Blackwhip before the Yakuza can even begin to fight. Izuku had realized as soon as he saw Overhaul taking off his gloves that his Quirk was a five-point-touch activation much like Tomura's Decay and Ochako's Zero Gravity, hence Blackwhip's deployment.
    • Shoto only needs a few seconds to defeat Stain when he comes to Tenya's rescue.
    • When Wolfram's group try to infiltrate the I-Expo, they're met by Star and Stripe, who had been called in by David Shield in advance.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Hisashi leaving his wife and child had nothing to do with his son's Quirklessness. In fact, he left them before that was even a known fact: his leaving stemmed from the fact that due to his own Abusive Parents and messed up upbringing, he developed anger issues and didn't know how to be a good husband or father, and he ultimately decided that they'd be better off without him in their lives, leaving to Break the Cycle of Bad Parenting. Upon learning that All Might has effectively replaced him in his family's life, Hisashi's reaction is to say that he's glad they found someone better than him and wish them well.
  • Damned by Faint Praise:
    • Discussed and Downplayed. When Ibara says it is somewhat admirable that Kaminari can keep his perversions in check, Kyouka says that it's an extremely low bar to clear. Setsuna for her part chimes in and concedes that while it's true the bar is low, too many men fail to clear it, which results in Kyouka deciding that yes, this is ultimately a point in Kaminari's favor. Kaminari saw a peephole and chose to report its presence first, which helps him, especially when Mineta's own more obvious perversions prove to be his downfall.
    • During the Quirk Counseling session, Aizawa tells Izuku that he can leave for the first half of the session if Izuku feels awkward talking in front of him. Izuku is surprised that a teacher would be that considerate of him. The Vestiges snark that the bar for that is so low it's a tripping hazard in Hell.
    • Another example happens when Inko tells Aizawa that he's the best teacher Izuku ever had. Since most of Izuku's previous teachers are now behind bars (and one of the vestiges quips in regards to the above bar being a tripping hazard in Hell that said previous teachers are there with Lucifer), Aizawa doesn't consider it much of a compliment.
    • Hisashi Midoriya name-drops the trope when Izuku points out that at least he did better than Endeavor when it came to being a father.
    • Momo refers to her work studies week with Yoroi Musha in these terms. It causes his Hero ranking to drop.
  • Deadly Euphemism: People unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of Nezu's wrath are said to have been subjected to an "unpleasantness". The first victims of this were the scientists who experimented on him, and only pieces of them were ever found. In different continents.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When Izuku comments that getting into a life-threatening situation with expectations for the bond to save them is a good way to learn its limits fatally, Recovery Girl snarks what a miracle it is that he's learned self-preservation.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Overhaul is murdered by All for One shortly after his arrest. All for One doesn't come out of it unscathed, though, as [[DefiantToTheEnd in his final moments, Overhaul wrecked All for One's hands to the point Mugen couldn't use the stolen Overhaul Quirk.]]
    • Chronostasis is killed by All for One during Kamino to prevent him from turning against Tomura, having recognized that Izuku now has the Overhaul Quirk on seeing its use to heal Gluttony (Izuku had stolen it and ten other Quirks, along with destroying a further twenty-three, when All for One tried stealing One for All).
    • Takeshita, Uwabami, The Fly and Kesagiri Man are all killed off-page during the MLA Uprising.
    • Trumpet is killed by Toga during the MLA Uprising.
    • Re-Destro, Geten, Skeptic, Slidin Go and Mustard are all killed by Tomura controlling All for One's body after stealing their Quirks (along with Curious, who here is given a case of Dies Differently in Adaptation).
  • Deconstruction Fic: All for One's ultimate plan for Tomura is deconstructed. If his plan is for Tomura to have the willpower AFO himself doesn't have to take One for All, then he is by necessity creating someone with more willpower than him. This allows Tomura to kill All for One's consciousness in the Quirk.
  • Defiant to the End:
    • Yoichi's last words to his older brother, who just found out that he gave away his stockpiling Quirk, are "Sorry, brother, but Your Princess Is in Another Castle!" When he said he died memeing, he wasn't kidding.
    • Even while All for One is stealing his Quirk, Overhaul uses the last remnants to permanently mangle his hands. This prompts All for One to drown him in a toilet.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to being in Class 1-B this time around, Todoroki, Mineta, Sero, Sato, Aoyama, Ojiro, and Shoji get much less focus. Despite being in that class as well, Bakugo barely averts this trope, as he still gets a decent amount of focus. Though he ultimately plays this straight as of Chapter 10, as Word of God states that his role in the story comes at the end with his expulsion and his subsequent acceptance of taking rehabilitation at Ketsubutsu, although he gets his own side-story to reveal what's happening with him. Todoroki is slowly slipping out of this as he becomes friends with Izuku. Mineta being this is why the girls of canon 1-B are Ascended Extras.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • When Shinso does his "we're going to take your spots in the Hero Course" threat, Izuku is actually relieved, much to Shinso's utter confusion. Izuku then elaborates that the entrance exam is heavily biased towards destructive Quirks, and there are many people with Quirks useful for hero work that wouldn't work too well (or at all) against robots, citing Aizawa's Erasure Quirk as an example, so Izuku is happy that said people get another chance to be on the Hero Course.
    • Monoma attempts to copy Izuku's Quirk even after he gets warned that Izuku broke himself the first time he used it. He manages to copy it - and it turns out that, since it's a stockpile Quirk, he's essentially getting a blank. Monoma only has the time to utter "Errors have been made" before Izuku tosses him out of the ring.
    • Of all the things Izuku expected to see when he returns to Nighteye's office after his "The Reason You Suck" Speech to the Pro Hero, the one thing he really didn't expect was to see him in the Pose of Supplication.
    • Skeptic is caught off guard when La Brava furiously attempts to hack him during the MLA insurrections out of retaliation for him unknowingly messing with the release of a game she was anticipating.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • When Momo said that her original costume design was based on Midnight's original costume, Izuku asks if she means the very costume that caused the Diet to pass laws regarding how much skin a Pro Hero can show. This causes Momo to admit that she hadn't considered things properly. Izuku also points out that the shelf on her back is a potential health risk (as one bad fall could sever her spine). Momo permanently retires the original costume after intentionally wearing it as bait against Mineta in a pre-Sports Festival battle trial.
    • Despite knowing he's on probation, Bakugo still uses his gauntlets against Ochako even after All Might orders him not to do it since such an attack would be lethal. After Ochako manages to dodge and beat him anyway (the evasion thanks to a Bullet Time effect activated courtesy of a sudden Bonding level-up), Vlad King announces that he's expelled.
    • Tomura calls out All for One for this; Mugen’s entire plan was to perform a combined version of Grand Theft Me and Split-Personality Merge on Tomura, using his own implanted vestige, in order to use Tomura’s rage and hatred to overcome One for All’s willpower and steal it back. The flaw in this plan is that Mugen’s vestige doesn’t have the willpower to force Tomura to do what he wants, either.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Instead of being impaled with spikes by Overhaul (who here was killed first by All for One in retaliation for one last act of defiance by permanently mangling All for One's hands mid-theft), Nighteye has his skull crushed by Slidin' Go.
    • Played With regarding All for One, who is not dead yet in canon, but here is left brain-dead after Tomura destroys his conscience at the Vestige realm after gaining his original Quirk.
  • Do Wrong, Right:
    • When the Meta Liberation Army finds out Hisashi Midoriya is doing the investigation into their money, they send assassins after them. The target not only avoids them all, and even captures one of the assassins single-handedly, but also complains about how shoddy the work on one of their car bombs was.
    • Miruko's mother isn't upset her daughter got involved in underground fighting rings. She's upset she got caught.
  • Doing Research: Apparently, Power Loader took the time to make a full presentation (including graphs) to prove that Izuku and his friends are the only ones who can rein in Mei and have her cause fewer explosions.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Katsuki is outraged to learn Aldera Middle School tampered with both his and Izuku's records to give Katsuki as big a leg up as possible, not because he finds it morally wrong, but because he finds it insulting that Aldera thought he needed help.
  • Dope Slap:
    • Ochako's mother gives one to her husband after he jokes about Izuku and Ochako marrying Momo.
    • Shoda takes over as Monoma's Cloud Cuckoo Landers Minder by hitting him in the leg when he goes too far in his hatred of 1-A (as Itsuka was moved to 1-A to protect her from Mineta).
    • Daigoro gets one when he jokes about Ryouji and Isamu finally learning empathy.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap:
    • After Izuku's and Momo's overwhelming and flawless performance in the Heroes vs Villains exercise, All Might makes a note to make sure the two aren't put on the same team again so other people stand an actual chance of winning against either of them in future exercises.
    • Word of God says that when Izuku transferred Search back to Ragdoll it reset for both people. Due to this Dr. Garaki and the rest of the league of Villians aren't captured right away and are still active players.
    • The MLA starts their revolution with numerous bombing attacks which target, among other places, several military bases throughout Japan. Word of God says this is to explain why the army isn't getting involved with a terrorist insurrection.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Class 1-B soon learns there are several 1-A students not to be crossed. One of them is Izuku. Another is Kinoko.
    • Nezu is well-feared by most anyone who knows about him, and they are quite pleased when he turns his attention on those who've wronged/angered them or those they care for. Izuku even states that treating with him feels like a Deal with the Devil.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: When Izuku is nervous during the gala he is attending as Momo's date, Daigoro jokes that he should pretend he's going to give his Sports Festival speech and call Nana's grandson a "whiny little baby". Neither the Vestiges nor Izuku or Momo find it funny at all.
  • Dungeon Bypass:
    • Izuku combines Float and One for All to easily win the first event of the Sports Festival, even after he doubles back to help the others get through the robots (by protecting the students from the robots frozen by Shoto) and explodes part of the minefield.
    • Due to Momo's Quirk awakening and Mei and Melissa's own expertise, class 1-A gets around the Forest of Beasts at training camp by simply flying over it. Aizawa specifically notes he's both proud and irritated by their efforts.
  • The Empath: Izuku and the girls he's bonded with can sense each other's emotions, understand their motivations and even get an inkling of their potential reactions to certain issues.
  • Enlightened Self-Interest: After Izuku publicly calls out Detrenat Industries for how they refuse to make any products for Quirkless people, several companies realize that there's an entire demographic they've been ignoring and reach out to a company that is run by Quirkless people so they can take advantage of the unexploited market.
  • Entertainingly Wrong:
    • After noticing the favoritism All Might shows Izuku no matter how subtle the former tries to be, the other 1-A students come to the reasonable, but wrong, conclusion that they are father and son. After the events of the MLA uprising, that conclusion won't be so wrong anymore.
    • Izuku logically concludes that All for One transferred his consciousness to Tomura and took over his body. He is also wrong as he has no way of knowing Tomura seized full control.
  • Everyone Can See It: Izuku and Ochako are so obvious that pretty much everyone in 1-A considers them a married couple.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • The vestiges of One For All are quick to call out Izuku and Bakugo's relationship as toxic and go out of their way to try and break him away from it.
      • The Second and Third holders of One For All in particular are disgusted that Izuku was bullied for being Quirkless due to coming from an era where the opposite happened and they know full well how much it hurts to be on the receiving end.
      • The Second and Third holders are livid enough after hearing about Endeavor's bullshit that they want to straight out kill him. They are quite pleased with Izuku's plan to ruin the man, though (which ends up involving Nezu, who had also dealt with Aldera in a similar way). Said plan impresses Third enough to have him state that Izuku will be getting Fa Jin (Third's Quirk) as soon as he's able to.
    • The entire U.A. staff are sickened by Bakugo's bullying of Izuku and Mineta's perverted actions, making sure to keep them separated from their targets. This results in all thirteen girls of that year's heroics course being in 1-A with Izuku.
    • Even Bakugou is put off by Mineta's perversions and is tempted to just blow him up, but restrains himself due to being on probation.
    • Kaminari brings up that someone put a peeping hole into the girls' locker room, which everyone agrees he should report to the teachers immediately.
    • Pretty much the entirety of 1-A and 1-B are disgusted with Bakugo over learning that he bullied Izuku for being Quirkless, including Monoma who's the most confrontational with 1-A.
    • Both Izuku and Tsuyu immediately enter Tranquil Fury upon learning that Toru's hero costume doesn't incorporate DNA-encoded material, that she's genuinely naked and that apparently no one even bothered to suggest the idea. This results in Toru becoming the second female member of 1-A to have a hero costume incorporating DNA-encoded material, after Momo.
    • Kaminari may be a pervert, but even he is disgusted with Mineta groping Momo (who was intentionally acting as bait by wearing the old costume behind her new DNA-encoded one).
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Menagerie only sees the animals from Kuraudo Island in terms of the money he could make from selling them, not caring about their well-being at all. Koda gets so mad that his Quirk evolves.
  • Eviler than Thou:
    • The Meta Liberation Army pulls this against the Hero Commission by bombing their headquarters and killing their leaders to kickstart its Uprising.
    • Tomura does this against Mugen by destroying his conscience upon gaining the original version of All for One.
  • Evil Is Petty: Re-Destro sets his MLA lieutenants to find ways to destroy Izuku for daring to give Detnerat a bad customer review in front of prospective investors. The thought of actually doing something about his company's products and terrible customer service never occurs to him.
  • Exact Words:
    • Tenya, when chastising Setsuna for putting her feet up on her desk, tells her to remove her feet from the desk. Her response is to use her Quirk to remove only her feet from her desk while not changing positions.
    • Nezu reassures Mineta's mother that Momo has been "penalized for her first-time use of excessive force against a classmate". Said penalty amounted to telling her "Don't do it again". Mineta and his mom got off way worse when Momo's parents got involved.
    • The author stated that Toga wouldn't be part of the polycule, but not that she wouldn't bond with Izuku, which happens for a few seconds before Izuku learns of her actions and beliefs and severs the bond.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
    • When talking to Shigaraki at the mall Izuku states that part of his regular attire includes custom red shoes for the extra toe joint in Quirkless individuals. He then realizes what that means for Shigaraki.
    • Comedic example; after Ryouji (2nd user) and Isamu (3rd user) reveal that they're actually married (which none of the Vestiges even knew), Yoichi realizes why they perfected the mental partitioning technique inside One for All soon after Hikage joined them.
  • Exposition Beam: Star and Stripe uses her Quirk to make Izuku understand everything about his Quirk, which also shows him (and the readers) the original holders of Bonding and Power Stockpile, the Quirks that would merge with Yoichi's to become One for All - while also knocking him out with the information overload.
  • Expy:
    • Akira Fuki, the General Studies student Izuku fights in the Quarterfinals, is one to Kamen Rider Fourze. His grandfather is even named Gentarou Kisaragi, the Rocket Hero: Cosmic.
    • Mei's father is one to Doctor Emmett Brown, even giving an exclamation of "Great Scott" at one point.
    • Bolo, the hero Mina and Setsuna confront in Chapter 68, is one to RoboCop.
  • False Reassurance: U.A.'s staff tell the First Year Hero Course Students that they are doing their joint training to see if they're ready for the Sports Festival and work on any weak points that become apparent as a result, and cite Mirio's Wardrobe Malfunction as a reason why they're doing this. None of this is false, but it works in hiding that the main reason for the joint training is to test Bakugou and Mineta before they have a chance to embarrass the school on live television. Both fail the test when Mineta blatantly gropes Momo (who is intentionally acting as bait by wearing her old Midnight-inspired costume) and Bakugo ignoring an order against using his gauntlets for a potentially lethal attack on Ochako, leading to both of them being expelled.
  • Famed In-Story: After the Sports Festival, Izuku becomes famous for both winning the event and for his speeches during the event. He's forced to go around with a face mask to avoid being recognized.
  • Fantastic Ableism:
    • Izuku was treated very badly for most of his life due to his lack of a Quirk. This is shown when kids in his middle school would actively harass him in front of teachers who would do nothing to stop it despite it being their jobs, and it is later mentioned that students left red spider lilies on his desk multiple times*. It isn't until Izuku first manifests Full Cowl in class that a teacher stops Bakugo from attacking him. Said prevention being filmed by a different classmate is the beginning of the end for both Katsuki's time at U.A. and the existence of Aldera as a whole (both of which involve Nezu in the equation somewhere).
    • Detnerat, which is a Meta Liberation Army front, not only refuses to make any products for Quirkless people (such as shoes) but is very hostile towards the idea of Quirkless people buying their products. Izuku gets to call Re-Destro (in his civilian identity) out on this matter.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • Shinso suffered from this on account of his "villain" Quirk, to the point that he wasn't even allowed to talk to other people at school and other students would also leave red spider lilies on his desk.
    • Boro, the hero that Mina and Setsuna confront in Chapter 68, calls Mina a mutant as a slur.
  • Fastball Special:
    • Fumikage and Itsuka perform this maneuver during their battle trial after Momo and Izuku electrify the emergency ladder.
    • Eijiro lets Rappa throw him this way in their attempt to stop the League from kidnapping Izuku.
  • Fate Worse than Death:
    • When the Second and Third OFA holders suggest killing Endeavor, Izuku instead insists on leaving him alive while utterly ruining his reputation. The Third is so impressed that he offers Izuku access to Fa Jin as soon as he gets enough mastery over One for All.
    • Shigaraki's idea of what to do to Izuku in Chapter 41: torture him to the point he either willingly gives up One For All or All For One can steal it, mangle him into a living torso, and stuff enough Quirks into him so he can survive being Himiko's "combo blood bank and body pillow".
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Literal example - the HPSC is trying to make watching a Gentle Criminal video a crime.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Akira Fuki's Quirk only allows him to empower other people, so he's trained up his body to fight others as best he can.
  • Fingore: Snipe removes Tomura's right pointer finger with a bullet. It's later revealed that because of this Shigaraki's Decay has a 10-25% chance of failing now when he uses his right hand. Said failure chance ends up saving Izuku's life later on.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing:
    • Tsuyu suggests Toru might bond with Izuku a scene before the girl does.
    • While interning with Sir Nighteye, the hero reminds Izuku to use his panic button as a first resort. The very next scene, Izuku and Mirio run into Overhaul and Eri, causing Izuku to press his panic button.
  • Flat "What": Seems to be one common reaction whenever someone drops a bombshell.
    • Izuku nearly does it when Mei drags him so they can "make some babies together" (i.e. build support items). This causes Izuku to guess Tenya had been talking to Mei when the former assumes the more obvious explanation for "making babies".
    • Yoichi when Izuku bonds with Mei.
    • Inko when she sees the limousine waiting to take her and Izuku to Momo's house.
    • David Shield when All Might mentions his "adoption" of Izuku.
    • Bakugo when he's told he's legally a villain. His side story later reveals the HPSC inflated his ranking to try and get him on their side.
    • Izuku when Todoroki shares his belief that Izuku is All Might's son. And again when Todoroki states that Izuku's making things worse for him.
    • Nana when Endeavor becomes the first person ever to fully respond to one of Izuku's mumblestorms.
    • Monoma when Akira asks him to copy his Quirk.
    • Hitoshi when Yoichi possesses Izuku's body after he used Brainwashing on the latter.
    • Todoroki when Izuku appears to be fighting him without using his Quirk. And when Izuku begins to point out how him not using his full power could backfire.
    • Hitoshi when Ochako reveals that All Might is Izuku's unofficial father.
    • Izuku when Yui says people think he was fighting Quirkless against Todoroki. He wasn't, due to using Full Cowl: Invisible Mode.
    • Nighteye after Izuku declares he won't let him kill Mirio. And when Izuku mentions Nana.
    • The Vestiges when Izuku sees Nighteye in the Pose of Supplication.
    • Inko when Nezu reveals Eri's attachment to Izuku.
    • Tenya when Gran Torino states he's happy that Tenya Loophole Abused his way to confront Stain without breaking the law or his word not to fight him.
    • Denki when Izuku reveals he's polyamorous.
    • The Vestiges when Eri calls Izuku "Papa" for the first time.
    • Izuku when Tsuyu states she thinks Ibara doesn't approve of her.
    • Melissa when Denki suggests he and Mina can out-stupid Nezu to pass the practical exam.
    • Melissa when she reaches Level 2.
    • Hisashi when the Yaoyorozus mention Izuku in relation to Momo.
    • Izuku when Ryouji reveals he and Isamu were married.
    • Izuku when Star and Stripe states she's wanted to meet him for months.
    • Izuku when All Might begins to imply he might be interested in dating Inko.
    • Izuku after Yui and Momo reveal their joint present for his birthday.
    • Yui when Izuku points out the guys in her class had crushes on her.
    • Kota when Izuku tells him he didn't get his Quirk until a few months earlier.
    • All for One when Izuku doesn't show signs of being scared in spite of him using a Quirk to induce that effect.
    • Izuku when he learns a reporter (Curious) was asking if the League is trying to recruit him.
    • Ragdoll when Izuku uses Search.
    • All For One after All Might reveals that he already knows that Tomura Shigaraki is Tenko Shimura, thanks to Izuku telling him.
    • Aoyama lets out a "Quoi" after Izuku offers to modify his body to acclimate to his Quirk.
    • Re-Destro when he learns someone's investigating Shoowaysha Publishing's finances.
  • Foil:
    • David Shield and Sir Nighteye both are All Might fanboys who used to work with him and can't imagine a world without him, so they do something wrong trying to make it right. David realizes he messed up and starts taking steps to correct it on his own (leading to Wolfram and his crew running into Star and Stripe before they could cause trouble), Nighteye is set in the mindset that he's right until he is given undeniable proof he is wrong.
    • Hisashi Midoriya is also one to his third cousin Endeavor. Both are poor fathers with Fire-based Quirks and have difficulties related to their respective abilities. Hisashi, however, chooses to stay away from his son because of his own belief that he'd be a poor father due to his childhood troubles and temper problems mixing with his Quirk, and thus while not a good parent, is ultimately acting out of a desire to mitigate any damage he might cause to his family, even if it means that he's not part of their life anymore. The Yaoyorozus, who lend a neutral ear, encourage him to at least give himself a chance to make amends. Endeavor only begins to realize how poor of a father he really is after Izuku's speeches, and only long after he had caused immense psychological and physical trauma to his entire family for the sake of his one-sided rivalry with All Might. Anyone who learns about this is understandably enraged at how low Endeavor is willing to sink for a rivalry, and Nezu is very much on his case.
    • Takashi Nouenbou, a Business Course student, is a milder one to Izuku. Izuku desperately wanted to be a hero, but was regularly told he never could be because he didn't have a Quirk. On the other hand, Takashi was frequently told he'd be a great hero because of his Quirk, yet he both dislikes his Quirk* and genuinely has no interest in throwing himself into danger.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Isamu chewed out Destro for him trying to use his mother's death to justify his crimes. Isamu points out that countless children with Meta abilities (as they were known then) are orphans because Destro's forces murdered their parents for not having powers. One such victim was Isamu's sister-in-law.
  • Freudian Slip:
    • In Chapter 6, Toshinori calls Izuku his son in his internal narration several times. The first time he backtracks and says "successor", but the last time it happens it is because he backtracks on calling him "successor" and replaces it with "son".
    • Izuku accidentally calls Toshinori "Dad" in Chapter 9 after telling him of his discovery regarding Nana's family.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: The rest of Class 1-B dislikes Bakugou because of his abrasive nature and being so big of a jerkass he outright refuses to remember their names, telling them to their faces they don't deserve to have names. The only reason they put up with him at all is because they're classmates and they literally have no choice in the matter and even then, they distance themselves from him as much as they can. Being revealed later to be The Bully only makes it worse, and most of them are glad to see him off after he gets expelled. Mineta's the same way with his obvious perversions.
  • The Gadfly: En, the sixth user of One for All, is a jokester who loves to mess around with Izuku.
  • Gatling Good:
    • The helicopter 1-A uses to traverse the Forest of Beasts has one that fires rubber bullets. It becomes mighty useful when the League of Villains attacks.
    • Mei unleashes one against Canopy and Dabi, tag-teaming with Momo to get Bottomless Magazines of rubber bullets.
  • Gilligan Cut: Happens quite often:
    • After getting his UA acceptance letter, Izuku is so happy he claims that nothing can bring him down. Cue the next scene:
Bakugo: How the FUCK did you cheat like that, Deku?!
Oh right. Katsuki. Katsuki could bring him down.
    • The first additional Quirk the vestiges unlock for Izuku is Danger Sense, because, as Yoichi puts it, U.A. is a very safe school where danger is minimal, so it's the best chance for Izuku to get used to it. Cue the next day, and Izuku is on the infirmary with a killer headache caused by Danger Sense going off.
Yoichi: I'm sorry I jinxed you, Izuku.
    • It happens a third time when Nezu tells All Might to tell Inko about Izuku having One for All and everything it entails. All Might calls it an easy task. The next scene shows Inko fainting upon seeing All Might on her doorstep and Ochako in the apartment due to Inko and Izuku offering to let her have dinner with them whenever she wishes. All of which stems from All Might completely forgetting to tell Izuku about the upcoming meeting.
    • After a meeting with Sir Nighteye that consists of Izuku thoroughly chewing out the former on why Mirio would die if he got One for All, only for Mirai to respond with a Pose of Supplication and offering him the rarest All Might figurine in his collection as compensation, Izuku muses that this has to be the oddest beginning of an internship in his class. We then see Tenya begin his internship with Gran Torino.
  • God Is Dead: Parodied in the following exchange:
    Shinso: God is Dead.
    Izuku: Impossible, Momo-chan’s still alive.
  • Go Look At The Distraction:
    • During the Cavalry Battle, Team Asui (Tsuyu as the rider, with Izuku, Ochako, and Mei as horses) uses some of Mei's drones to make the other teams believe one of them holds the 10-million-point headband when it's actually just floating in mid-air.
    • At the tail end of the Cavalry Battle, Team Asui uses all the headbands they have been collecting to distract all the other teams while they make off with the 10-million-point headband.
  • Gold Digger: Ochako's father becomes one by proxy, encouraging her to marry Momo after he sees how rich Momo is. It is all Played for Laughs.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: During the Kamino Raid, Toga gets a sample of Izuku's blood and shapeshifts into him, giving her a copy of Bonding and linking her to his telepathic network, exposing her to all of their feelings towards her. When she realises they pity her for her Quirk circumstances, deny her because she hurts others, and want her to get help, not because they want her to be normal, but because they want her to stop hurting people, she can't take the emotions and runs off in shame to cry.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Izuku, upon learning about Endeavor's actions in regards to his family and Todoroki, tells the Second and Third Vestiges they're not going to kill the man. Instead, Izuku wants to turn the entire world against him, thus rendering him useless and stripping him of that power he so adores and forcing him to live with the consequences of his actions. This impresses the Third Vestige enough that he decides that Izuku gets Fa Jin as soon as he's able. All Might got Nezu involved completely independently of Izuku's plan.
  • Group Hug: Most of 1-A joins in one after the USJ incident.
  • A Handful for an Eye: Kinoko and Reiko win against Aizawa when the former throws sand into his eyes.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power:
    • On its own, Quirk Understanding gives someone the power to understand their own quirk, making it completely worthless. But in individuals with multiple quirks, it can be used to understand the limitations and uses of any other quirk the person has, including the possible effects and synergies the combination of different Quirks can have. All For One prized it for exactly that reason. It is among the Quirks Izuku and his polycule are able to outright steal from him.
    • Inko's Attraction of Small Things might seem underpowered compared to the rest of the Quirks, but when you think about it, and other fanfics like A Hero Rises has pointed out, her Quirk could theoretically work on body parts. Such as Re-Destro's teeth and his kidneys.
  • Heel Realization:
    • Bakugo realizes he truly is a villain after All Might shares an …And That Little Girl Was Me story, revealing his own childhood was almost identical to Izuku's and making Bakugo realize that he would have been just as cruel to his idol's teenage version.
    • Izuku's speech to Todoroki (which goes viral thanks to Nezu) forces Endeavor to realize how much he has screwed up everything in his self-imposed quest to either become the Number One Hero or ensure his children would achieve that. The latter path is how Nezu got on to his case to begin with.
    • Monoma realizes how his monomania with thinking the 1-A students looks like when Alistair Avery (whom Monoma dislikes because of the disparaging comments he made against him) says exactly the same thing he was going to mention about 1-A.
  • He Knows Too Much: All for One kills Chronostasis (stealing his Quirk in the process) when the latter sees Izuku using Overhaul, as he realizes the only way he could do this is if All for One had killed Overhaul and taken his Quirk. If All for One hadn't acted, Chronostasis would have quickly turned on Shigaraki.
  • Herbivores Are Friendly: Zigzagged. While at Kuraudo Island, the students help take care of several herbivore dinosaurs that behave very well, but, as Koda and the island attendants point out, herbivores are often more dangerous than carnivores, mentioning how hippos cause statistically more deaths than lions (which is Truth in Television).
  • Hidden Depths:
    • An instance of Played for Laughs. Ochako ends up reminding Izuku that she was "raised by construction workers" by swearing up a creative storm after seeing the restaurant that Momo insisted on treating the class to eat at after their first day of school. It involves just how rich Momo's family is.
    • Yui is a person who barely speaks, but when she gets Izuku to share his number with her he is surprised about the torrent of writing she produces.
  • History Repeats: The Second and Third holders of One For All remark that they had to fight hard for people with Quirks to be accepted by a still normal society. They both find it disgusting that now the reverse is happening.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • During their pre-Sports Festival fight, Toru realizes she can bend Aoyama's lasers and twists one enough to hit him back.
    • Siphon (a villain with the power to suck the stamina of other people and add it to himself) realizes he won't be able to escape after the attack at U.A.'s Summer Camp, and tries to take a hostage - only to pick Monoma of all people. Monoma promptly copies Siphon's Quirk and turns it on him, putting them in a stalemate long enough for Nejire to turn the tide.
    • Biggest hoist of all, All for One attempts to steal One for All from Izuku. However, the combined will of Izuku, the Vestiges, and the Ennead instead hijack the connection and start swiping and destroying his Quirks instead. All for One ends up losing thirty-four Quirks, with eleven of them getting added to One for All - including a Super Regeneration copy, Quirk Understanding, Search, and Overhaul. Talk about an own goal!
      • Even bigger hoist, Mugen gave a copy of All For One to Nine, which wound up interacting with Monoma's Copy, giving Phantom Thief his own, albeit altered, copy of All For One. That's right, a version of All For One is in a Hero's hands.
    • Toga transforms into Izuku as part of her plan to needle Ochako and Yui... only for this to cause her to accidentally connect to Bonding and make her sense the feelings of all the girls. This ends up causing her to break down and run away, with her world turned upside down by what she's learned.
  • Hourglass Plot: Because of bigoted Quirkist supremacists, in Aldera Middle School and previous schools, Bakugou is the popular kid for having a powerful, flashy, "heroic" Quirk while Izuku was at the bottom of the social ladder because of his Quirklessness. At U.A., with zero tolerance for bigotry from teachers and students, Izuku is the popular kid for his heroic nature while Bakugou is at the near bottom of the social order because of his appalling personality. A sudden Bonding level-up engaging Bullet Time for Ochako to dodge a potentially lethal attack (that he was specifically told not to use) results in Bakugo being expelled before the Sports Festival.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Monoma meets an American student who is his Mirror Character. Monoma promptly complains about the guy's attitude, with a complete lack of self-awareness his classmates chuckle about.
  • Hypocrisy Nod:
    • Tsuyu acknowledges her hypocrisy when, after learning how bad Izuku had it in his school, she asks for names, right after telling Izuku she won't tell him the names of the boys who stood her up (and also invoking Exact Words by saying a pipe wrench isn't a Quirk to avoid vigilantism charges).
    • After the girls unlock Level 4 and teleport to Izuku, Izuku states their appearance is quite inconvenient, only for Melissa to reply that he would have done exactly the same thing, which he agrees to.

    Tropes I-P
  • I Am Not My Father: Todoroki, who asks Izuku to call him Shouto instead of using his family name.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: After Izuku breaks Mei's fall following an explosion for the second time, she asks if he can stick around in case of mishaps. Maijima says he's considering asking the same and he finds that very concerning.
  • I Have Nothing to Say to That: When Kaminari is chastised for saying "Better them than us!" when Itsuka and Tokoyami are the unlucky duo to go up against Izuku and Momo, he retorts he was just saying what they were all thinking, which no one disputes.
  • I Have This Friend: Played for Laughs. When Izuku sees Mineta leering at the girls, he mentally asks the vestiges if there's a way to kill him and make it look like an accident, stating he's "asking for a friend, who is me".
  • I Know Your True Name:
    • Izuku attempts to shock Tomura out of his villainous path by pulling this, but it backfires.
    • All for One and Dabi freak out when other people reveal they know their true names, Mugen Shigaraki and Touya Todoroki. All for One's case also involved Izuku in the equation somewhere...
  • I Need a Freaking Drink:
    • It's heavily implied that Vlad King is lacing his coffee with strong alcohol to deal with the utter mess that is his class.
    • When Aizawa is read in on One for All, he grabs a full coffee pot and drinks straight from it.
  • If I Wanted X, I Would Y: When Bakugou accuses his classmates of trying to ride his coattails, Hiryu replies that if they wanted that, they'd be riding Shouto's. He's the actual most powerful student in their class and comes with the bonuses of being quiet unlike Bakugou's abrasiveness and calling them by their actual names instead of the insulting ones Bakugou uses.
  • If Only You Knew: Mirio teases Izuku about his friends Nejire and Tamaki meeting his girlfriends Ochako and Momo, not realizing they actually are dating. Izuku's reaction is how Mirio finds out about the polycule.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Ochako's dad attempts to do this to Izuku, only for the girl to point out Izuku risked his life to save his former bully from a villain. If he ever hurts her, it'd be by accident.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Izuku still saves Ochako from the Zero Pointer and gets saved in return by her before he hits the ground. Izuku gets more villain points this time around thanks to the Vestiges.
    • Someone still asks Izuku if he is All Might's kid. It just happens to be Tsuyu while they were heading for rescue training (although Todoroki still comes to the same conclusion).
    • Despite being on probation, Bakugo still has his grenade gauntlets as part of his hero costume. Lampshaded by All Might, who wondered who the hell allowed a student on probation with a very aggressive personality to have gear with the potential to kill. Word of God is that Nezu let him have them as a test of his self-control. Bakugo failed said test.
    • The USJ attack still happens despite Izuku catching Shigaraki stealing some documents from U.A. Said catching of Shigaraki also enables Izuku to confirm Decay is of a similar activation method (five-point-touch) to Ochako's Zero Gravity, which leads to Snipe specifically targeting a finger instead of a palm. That same activation method applies to Overhaul, leading to Izuku capturing the Yakuza boss with Blackwhip in a matter of seconds just on seeing Overhaul removing his gloves.
    • Todoroki still spills his family situation to Izuku during the Sports Festival. This time, though, Nezu caught his testimony on tape since he was already investigating Endeavor (likely on request from Izuku, and after All Might confirmed eugenics as ethically wrong) and Toru was the one who overheard it instead of Bakugo.
    • Momo still loses her first tournament match, but this time it is worse since she lost without even the chance of fighting.
    • Izuku still convinces Todoroki to start using his fire during their fight and busts up his right arm, albeit without breaking his fingers in the process.
    • Sir Nighteye attempts to make Izuku give One for All to Mirio, thinking the former worthless for the role.
    • Even though he was in an internship with Gran Torino, Tenya still ends up being in Hosu right as the Nomu attack the town while Stain prepares himself to attack another hero.
    • Himiko Toga still becomes obsessed with Izuku from seeing him bleed.
    • Tomura and Izuku still have an encounter at the mall after the UA End of Term Exams where the former vents his frustrations with Stain.
    • Ragdoll still gets abducted so All For One can steal her Search Quirk. Izuku subsequently steals it back when All for One tries to steal One for All.
  • Insane Troll Logic:
    • Karen Mineta first insists her son couldn't have groped anyone, then engages in Blaming the Victim when Nezu points out that several cameras prove it, and insists that Momo "committed a war crime"... by pepper-spraying Mineta when he groped her.
    • Pony mentions a few fundamentalists in Texas who believe that All Might is evil because his name is claiming that he is all-powerful and only God is all-powerful.
  • Insult to Rocks: Menagerie admits that calling his underling a Neanderthal is unfair, because Neanderthals weren't any less intelligent than modern humans, unlike said flunky.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • All Might reveals his weakened form and One for All to Inko and Ochako in Chapter 6.
    • The vestiges tell Izuku about All for One when they realize the villain is not as dead as they thought (or hoped).
    • When researching the families of the past users of One for All, Izuku discovers the fate of Kotaro Shimura and the rest of his family - and when he puts the pieces together, he figures out that Tenko Shimura is Tomura Shigaraki.
    • Class 1-A learns that all the female hero students are in their class in Chapter 9, having not actually realized that until then. It involved protecting them from Mineta.
    • Izuku reveals the girls not in the know the truth behind One for All after the Sports Festival.
    • Aizawa is let in on One for All and its history in Chapter 35.
    • Endeavor reveals his terrible treatment of his family to the public in Chapter 40. Dabi is furious at this change since it foiled his own plans to do just that.
  • In-Universe Factoid Failure: One of the reasons that Stain targets Native is for cultural appropriation. However, the Hero is half-Ojibwe (a real Native American tribe located in the midwestern United States and southern Canada) and half-Ainu (the ancient indigenous people of the Sea of Okhotsk region of Asia).
  • Irony:
    • When Aizawa learned that he was going to have all the first-year girls in his class, he attempted to quit, thinking it was going to be a mess. In the end, Class 1-A becomes such smooth sailing that it's stated that they have managed to hold out the longest as Aizawa's class without having an expulsion, while Vlad King is driven to short-term alcoholism over how dysfunctional Class 1-B has quickly become and ends up expelling Bakugo after he violates his probation and Mineta over his assault on Momo.
    • Two of the Quirks Izuku manages to steal from All for One, out of eleven in all (and twenty-three more that are destroyed), are the ones the villain intended to force into him after taking One for All.
    • After getting his Provisional Hero License and getting an apology letter from Bakugou, Izuku is puzzled that he isn't feeling more emotional about it, until it's pointed out that he's grown past Bakugou and left him behind - just like Bakugou said he was going to do to everyone else.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Monoma calls out Bakugo as "delusional as well as uncooperative" when the latter starts ranting about Izuku pretending to be Quirkless just to laugh at him.
  • Kansas City Shuffle:
    • A double-layered one. During the Heroes vs Villains exercise, Izuku and Momo are guarding a room with three copies of the bomb. After Tokoyami gets stuck to one, Itsuka notices some dust sticking to another and goes for the third one. She learns too late all three were fakes. After the exercise, Izuku heads to another room with three more bombs, all of which are also fake. The real one was hidden behind a fake wall in that room.
    • Izuku decides to use another in regards to his Quirk name, which he calls Decade Force and hints that he has ten special abilities from it, so people will attempt to guess what the unknown (and non-existent) ones are while allowing him to pass getting the other One for All Quirks as part of it.
  • Lame Pun Reaction:
    • When Izuku states that their practical exam will be harder than expected, Kinoko says "Amanitanote  explanation for that...". Several students groan.
    • When the Vestiges and the girls realize that En's sidekick was deliberately called Kagami, most of them groan.note
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • After openly groping Momo during their spar, Mineta is tased and pepper-sprayed by the girl herself, expelled from U.A., and facing both criminal charges and a lawsuit from the girl's very influential and pissed off father.
    • Bakugo's decade of bullying Izuku and then performing a lethal attack against Ochako results in him being expelled and labeled as a villain. Unlike Mineta, he's given the chance to reform.
  • Legacy Character: In-Universe, Jurassic Mark. Ever since Marcus Cuvier at the beginning of the Age of Quirks, there's always been a Jurassic Mark acting as Kuraudo Island's steward. The current title holder is Marcus Cuvier VII and his heir apparent is his grandaughter Susan Cuvier.
  • Like a Son to Me: All Might sees Midoriya as one, a feeling that is reciprocated.
  • Like Father, Like Son: A group photo of Hisashi Midoriya with his five female coworkers reveals that he, like his son, is a harem anime protagonist. Though he is oblivious to their affections on account of being previously divorced.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Super Regeneration can't be used on injuries that are cauterized before it can activate, which is why All for One couldn't heal his hands that were ruined by Overhaul, nor the ones that All Might's Laser Disk causes to his spine.
    • Saiko's intelligence-boosting Quirk doesn't help with information she doesn't have or when she's making decisions based on emotion rather than logic.
  • LOL, 69: Chapter 69 is titled "Nice", although the title is the only sexy thing about it.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Mineta was accepted into U.A. despite his history of sexual harassment because his record is officially clean, his mother is on U.A.'s board and his Entrance Exam score was good enough to make the cut, so Nezu was forced to let him in. That, however, does not preclude the principal from putting all the girls in the class he's not in, so Mineta ends in 1-B while the girls are in 1-A.
    • Using a Quirk to commit a crime against someone who's Quirkless automatically bumps up a villain's rank by a full letter. As Izuku was registered Quirkless for most of his life, Bakugo's persistent bullying of him makes him an A-ranked Villain and puts all of his classmates in a similar situation. It is later mentioned that this is mostly because of the HPSC, with Nezu stating that Bakugo should have been given a C-rank.
    • As Izuku puts it, it's only vigilantism if you use a Quirk, and a pipe wrench is not a Quirk.
    • Iida is given permission to use his Quirk only for the purposes of Search and Rescue. He then tracks down Stain, not to fight him, but to rescue his latest victim and use his panic button to summon a pro to take the Hero Killer down. Gran Torino congratulates him for learning how to think outside the box, then kicks his ass.
  • Love Epiphany: The bonds' second level (Empowering Bond) requires Izuku and/or the corresponding girl to undergo this.
    • Seeing Bakugo about to unleash a potentially lethal attack on Ochako causes Izuku to realize he loves Ochako. This ends up granting Ochako short-term Bullet Time, letting her avoid the attack and win the fight.
    • Momo has hers when Izuku states how amazing he believes her to be after her loss to Hitoshi.
    • Mei's passionate defense of him after he tells the girls about One for All causes him to realize how much he wants her to be with him.
    • Tsuyu's comes when she sees Izuku interacting with her younger siblings, realizing how good he would be as a father.
    • Toru's triggers after her first internship day, having realized how much Izuku has helped her personally. Specifically, her mentor's advice (combined with Izuku's) has allowed her to become visible for the first time ever.
    • Melissa’s occurs after the final exams when she’s called a hero for the role she played in helping all of 1-A pass, a lifelong dream that Izuku helped realize.
    • Yui's from Izuku thinking he could die happy if it meant he died saving her from Shigaraki.
    • Nejire's from Izuku thinking how much he loved her when she blasted Shigaraki away from him.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Defied, as a reference to the "Deku is the son of/Descended from All For One" fan plotline. Yoichi has gone on the record that even if Mugen wasn't asexual, he'd never potentially create a child stronger than himself, especially after the screw-up that created One For All in the first place. Mugen himself later thinks about how he has gone out of his way to cull his entire family tree, including distant relatives, meaning he's the only living Shigaraki in existence, ruling out even the most distant of relations.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Izuku half-jokingly asks for advice on how to do this in regard to Mineta when he sees the boy outright drooling over the girls in 1-A.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • Class 1-B when Izuku no sells Todoroki's strongest attack, then defeats him in one move. And again when he reveals he was only using 8% of his full power. Aoyama even drops a "Merde".
    • Nezu is pondering what to do about Aoyama when all the panic buttons given to the students at Summer Camp are quickly activated.
  • Meaningful Name: As is natural for characters in My Hero Academia:
    • Mineta's mother is named Karen. She acts exactly like a stereotypical Karen, including declaring that Momo "committed a war crime" by hitting Mineta with the equivalent of a stink bomb and pepper spray. It's also an actual Japanese name (or at least a variant), which makes it even more fitting with the setting.
    • Akira Fuki's name becomes this, with Fuki (吹) meaning "to brag", and Akira (担) meaning "to shoulder", a good name for someone who can empower people by giving them compliments.
    • Ryouji Futatsuya, the Second Torchbearer. Ryou (両) means "coin", which fits with his Quirk, Laser Disc, which lets him create coin-sized energy discs he can shoot. Meanwhile, Ji (次), Fu (二) and Tatsuya (ツ家) mean "next", "two", and "lineage", respectively, fitting in his place as the next Torchbearer after Yoichi
    • Isamu Mitsunami, the Third Torchbearer. Isamu (力) means "energy", Mi (三) means "three" and Tsunami (ッ浪) means "wave", reflecting how he is the third of One for All's holders, and his Quirk, Fa Jin, that lets him store kinetic energy by moving (or "waving") his limbs before unleashing it in a go, much like tsunamis are unleashing the energy liberated by an earthquake.
    • Momo's father's name, Einosuke, contains 栄, the kanji for prosperity.
    • Hitoshi Marubashi and Shizuku Kendai, the respective original Holders of the Bonding (the bonding aspect of 849's One for All) and Stockpile Quirks, have their names contain a pronunciation (Maru) or the kanji (零 or Rei) of the number 0, representing how their Quirks merged with Yoichi's to form One For All.
    • Dawson Jamrach a.k.a. Menagerie is a villain who captures, breeds, and sells wild animals for profit, especially the exotic and the Quirk-created prehistoric. His name comes from Charles Dawson, the conman archaeologist who forged the Piltdown Man fossil, and Charles Jamrach, an infamous exotic pet store owner.
  • Mercy Lead: Izuku tells Gentle and La Brava that he enjoys their stream and thinks that their villain rating was unfairly inflated for political reasons, but it would be in their best interests to avoid him when he's officially on the clock, as he would be obliged to capture them under those circumstances. They take the hint and resolve to avoid UA from then on.
  • Metaphorgotten: Izuku's description of Mei interacting with the inventors at the Hamada Expo.
Watching Mei was like watching a shark go on a feeding frenzy, except she was feeding on other sharks who were also feeding on her, and that caused her to feed even more, and the analogy was getting away from him.
  • Mindlink Mates:
    • The empathic bonds Izuku forms with his partners allow all of them to gain a level of insight into each other as if they've known each other for years. It allows them to know what each other is thinking and feeling, and how they would react to specific words and actions, even at a distance. It also allows Izuku to realize Mei is attending Momo's social get-together even though he was not told ahead of time anyone not from 1-A or their families would be there.
    • The second level (triggered by a Love Epiphany), connects the girls with the One for All mindscape, letting them speak with the Vestiges and with Izuku and visit it while sleeping, but this only works if they are within range - a range that grows exponentially as the number of Level 2 bonds increases.
    • In Chapter 13, Izuku finds out that the bonds can be broken while talking with Mei through a hypothetical scenario regarding her Sports Festival match which becomes a Chekhov's Gun when he accidentally bonds with Himiko Toga in Chapter 22.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Played for Drama; For all his planning, All for One never actually accounted for how he’d control Tomura to do his bidding once he'd possessed his body. Tomura even points this out to his face before killing him.
  • Mixed Metaphor: An unintentional one. Chapter 7 opens with Mei and Momo arguing about the economic repercussions of Momo using her Quirk to make Mei carbon nanotubes and graphene to work with. Mei compares it to "Tesla inventing the light bulb, but being more worried about getting financially screwed by Edison than toppling the lamp oil industry". When a commenter makes a note that the author got it wrong, the author admits fault but decides to keep it because it seems in character for Mei.
  • Moral Myopia: Most of the Shie Hassaikai want to take revenge on Izuku for Overhaul's death (Rappa just wants a good fight). The fact that Izuku stopped him because he was a horrible person who didn't even think twice of brutally torturing a young child, or that Overhaul was actually murdered by All for One, doesn't even factor in their minds. Chronostasis ends up losing his life to All for One upon realizing Izuku was telling the truth about the supervillain killing Overhaul.
  • Morton's Fork: Played for Laughs. Bakugo is offended both when Monoma uses his Quirk during the Quirk Assessment and when he uses someone else's instead.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Izuku and the others realize telepathy is great for holding a conversation while eating without appearing rude or risking choking on their food.
    • At one point, Momo uses her Quirk to create toys to accompany the story Ochako's reading to Eri.
    • Ochako's father has a Quirk that completely negates the weight of anything he's holding, so long as it weighs less than two thousand kilograms, but only so long as he maintains contact with it. Not the Super-Strength he originally thought it was, but it makes carrying shopping bags completely effortless.
    • While taking the boat back to Japan, Izuku uses Blackwhip to make a hammock big enough for all of the Ennead plus Eri.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Of the I Need a Freaking Drink variant. After being filled in about One for All, Aizawa is so shaken that when he goes for a cup of coffee from the maker, he foregoes the mug for drinking straight from the pot.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Izuku's Danger Sense goes haywire with the impression of a far-away catastrophe at the same time Tomura (in All for One's body) is staging his Tartarus jailbreak.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • First thing Izuku sees when entering Classroom 1-A? Tenya chastising a classmate for putting up their feet on a desk and telling them to remove them. It's not Bakugo this time (as Bakugo's in 1-B), but Setsuna.
    • After All Might's talk with David Shield, the latter's thoughts are a sign that he's already set up the events of My Hero Academia: Two Heroes. Realizing he's making a mistake, he works to correct it (including having Star and Stripe present, resulting in Wolfram's crew being stopped before they could do anything).
    • When Bakugo uses his grenade gauntlets for the first time, All Might warns him not to use the attack since it could be lethal, only for Bakugo to reply that his target (Ochako this time) will be fine as long as they dodge. As he's on probation in this universe, and it's only a sudden Bonding level-up that allows Ochako to dodge in Bullet Time, the attack causes Bakugo to be expelled.
    • Despite Itsuka being placed in 1-A, Monoma still gets hit by his Class Representative whenever he takes his rivalry with 1-A too far. It just so happens his Class Representative is Shoda who took the role Itsuka had in canon in keeping Monoma in line.
    • Gran Torino "greets" his intern by faking his death and Trolling him by playing senile.
    • Izuku meets Eri when she crashes into him during his first patrol with Mirio Togata.
    • Kota understands what heroism is really about when he meets Muscular - only, instead of happening because Izuku saves him, it's because Kota saves Eri.
    • Ochako threatens to send Curious into the ionosphere when the latter makes leading questions to make people think that Izuku might make a Face–Heel Turn. Curious met her end in canon when Toga transformed into Ochako and managed to imitate her Quirk to send Curious high and let gravity do the rest of the job.
  • Namedar: Quirk Understanding not only describes a Quirk's name and how it works but also the names of their original users. All for One didn't care about this part, but the Vestiges do when Izuku manages to steal it from him.
    • When Izuku gives Search back to Ragdoll, it's revealed to have merged with a copy of Quirk Understanding, meaning that she can now detect Quirk Names (like how Izuku's Quirk is named One for All instead of Decade Force).
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • Since All For One's first name has yet to be revealed in the manga proper, the author decided to name him "Mugen" (meaning "infinite") for the fanfic.
    • The Sixth Torchbearer's full name becomes En Rokubou, fitting him in the Torchbearers' Numerical Theme Naming ('roku' meaning 'six').
    • The Second and Third Torchbearers are named Ryouji Futatsuya and Isamu Mitsunami, both of them also fitting the Numerical Theme Naming (with 'fu' and 'mi' standing for 'two' and 'three').
    • Momo's parents are called Einosuke and Kayo.
    • The bearer of Stockpile (the Quirk All for One forced into his brother, and half of One for All) was called Shizuku Kendai.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Izuku telling Tomura about his actual identity as Tenko Shimura, hoping it would get him to stand down, only makes him remember his abusive father and neglectful family and double down on his intention to bring down the heroes, as well as plan a Fate Worse than Death for Izuku.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Destro's terrorist attacks sought to stop attempts to prevent Meta Ability-restricting laws from being approved. His brutality and hypocrisy were so bad that even people with Meta Abilities became in favor of such laws.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Muscular thought it would be funny to threaten Kota and Eri. Izuku answered by breaking his arms, his legs, and his jaw.
  • No Sympathy: No one (well, only Shoda, and even he dislikes him) cares about Mineta's suffering from Momo's combined stink bomb/pepper spray. Given his earlier open leering at all the girls, and that he just blatantly groped Momo while fighting, it's not hard to understand.
  • Noodle Incident: When quoting Nana, Izuku mentions the "Day of the Marshmallows". This allows Gran Torino to know Izuku is actually talking to her.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Unlike Aizawa, Kan shows his students their scores on the Quirk Assessment. This lets Bakugo realize that not only did he place third, but the next two students were barely behind him. It serves as the start of a wake-up call for the boy.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Kendo Rappa only joined the Shie Hassaikai and then the League of Villains to get a good fight, compared to the other members of the Shie Hassaikai who want revenge for Overhaul. Thus, when his battle with Izuku gets interrupted by Inquisitor capturing the latter, Rappa swaps sides for the slight against him.
  • Not So Above It All: The Second and Third wielders were from the dark age of Quirks and carry a mindset that comes with that most of the time. The keyword is most. Even they laugh when they hear All Might's advice towards Izuku, as well as snickering when Izuku is friendly with a girl or All Might realizes he's made a blunder.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Momo states how happy she is to finally have friends over at her house, Izuku quietly states he understands the feeling.
  • Not So Stoic: Even the usually-stoic Todoroki is shocked by Ochako's blistering Cluster F-Bomb before her fight with Bakugo.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Bakugo is quick to deny Mineta's insistence that he was going to Class 1-A to spy on the girls there like the other boy was.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: As per canon, the Torchbearers follow this. Hilariously, none of the Vestiges realize Izuku fits the trend until they see Tsuyu's little sister wrote Izuku's name with the kanji for "nine".
    • The Numerical Theme Naming also applies to Hitoshi Marubashi and Shizuku Kendai, the Holders of Bonding (the bonding aspect of 849's One for All) and Stockpile, with their names either having a pronunciation (Maru) or the kanji (零 or Rei) of the number 0.
    • Technically, with a permanently copied version of One for All in his possession, Neito Monoma can be considered the 10th wielder of One for All.
  • O.C. Stand-in: Akira Fuki, one of the General Education students trying to join the Heroics course through the Sports Festival, is one of the many background characters from the entrance exam (he has a rocket-shaped pompadour, was saved by Izuku during the exam and witnessed his destruction of the Zero Pointer).
  • Off the Rails: Since Overhaul was caught during the Internship arc (by Izuku in a Curb-Stomp Battle, due to immediately deducing Overhaul being a five-point-touch activation much like Tomura's Decay just by the sight of the villain removing his gloves), the Work Studies arc is shortened, and after the School Festival, a new original arc, combining the Survival Training OVA and the Joint Training arc, alongside the events of the Heroes Rising movie.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Both Aizawa and Yagi get a fearful look on their faces when Nezu suggests giving Izuku lessons in ciphering.
    • Danger Sense is essentially an inducer of these. Izuku carried a panic button precisely to warn U.A.'s staff if he gets a particularly powerful feeling that something's about to go wrong. Meeting Overhaul causes it to flare out.
    • Karen Mineta goes from furiously insisting she'll sue the "succubus who dared hurt her little angel Minoru" to fainting in fear when she learns that said "succubus" is Momo Yaoyorozu.
    • "Errors have been made", when Monoma finds out during his Sports Festival match against Izuku that Izuku's Quirk is a stockpile - after he copies said Quirk.
    • Izuku gets a massive one when he temporarily bonds with Himiko Toga. And it's going to be a continuing one, since the bond, despite being severed, not only made her even more focused on "loving" him, it put his other bonded on her radar.
    • Izuku and Uraraka give one when they find out All Might is their opponent for their practical exam.
    • Izuku and Toru share one when they realize that, with all of his bonds at the next level, Aizawa won't hold back against them anymore.
    • All for One gets one when his attempt to steal One for All from Izuku goes epically wrong.
    • Izuku is just done when he finds out from Ragdoll that when he gave her back Search, it synergized with Danger Sense, Diagnosis, Multitasking, and Quirk Understanding to the point that Search is effectively supercharged.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten:
    • All Might will never be allowed to forget how he gave One for All to Izuku. Nor his poor advice on how to activate it.
    • Izuku not telling Ochako what would happen when she visited the Vestiges' realm.
    • Two years later, Izuku reminds Death Arms of how he stood by and did nothing because he "didn't have a suitable Quirk".
  • One Degree of Separation:
    • It turns out Izuku's father Hisashi is the best forensic accountant Momo's parents have and he directly reports to them. Momo's parents were initially concerned Izuku did not know this but Hisashi is able to explain why he has such an estranged relationship with his son. He also turns out to be Endeavor's third cousin.
    • One of the Quirks Izuku stole from All for One originally belonged to En's sidekick.
    • Takashi Nouenbou, the Business Course student who suggests how Deku can counter the MLA's propaganda, had already met him through the HeroNet forums.
    • La Brava is a descendent of Team Zero, the original holders of Bonding and Power Stockpile.
  • One-Steve Limit: An aversion; there are two people with the given name Hitoshi in this story (though with different kanji): Hitoshi Shinso, the brainwashing hero student, and Hitoshi Marubashi, the original holder of the Bonding Quirk.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: Momo admits she can respect Yoroi Musha's honesty in publicly admitting he was only a hero for fame and money, but that's the only thing she respects.
  • Only Sane Man: Shoda and Shishida appear to be this for class 1-B, being appointed as the class representative and vice representative by Vlad King because they were the only ones trying to defuse 1-B's infighting.
  • Only in It for the Money: Following the MLA Uprising, Yoroi Musha quits, citing he was only in it for the money and he doesn't know if he will still be paid for being a hero.
  • Open Secret: Rumors are spreading of All Might and Izuku having a connection which Todoroki mentions when he talks to Izuku. Clearly, they are lousy at being discrete.
  • Parental Substitute: Izuku considers Nana his "ghost stepmom", and regards All Might as his father figure, a sentiment that is quickly returned by the hero.
  • Persona Non Grata: After the first day, Bakugo and Mineta are told in no uncertain terms that if either of them approaches Class 1-A or its members outside of a scheduled event, their grades will be dropped by three letters (an automatic fail).
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: During their fight, Mineta gropes Momo. She promptly tases him and then covers him in a combination of stink bomb and pepper spray.
  • Point of Divergence: Though it is not revealed right away, the diverging point is that the original owner of the Stockpile Quirk had a lover who had the Bonding Quirk which was also stolen by All for One. Because of this, Bonding merged with Stockpile before All for One forced it on his brother, making One for All a gestalt of three Quirks instead of two. Every other change flows through from there.
    • The story begins with the vestiges of One For All manifesting just before the entrance exam because Bonding being mixed in One for All caused the Quirk to hit Singularity earlier than in canon, which allows for Izuku to use Full Cowl during said exam.
    • Due to the Vestiges bolstering his confidence, Izuku has more of a backbone than in canon, beginning with telling off Bakugo during the first class day after the Entrance Exam results come out.
    • Izuku tells All Might about his and Bakugo's relationship which leads to All Might telling Nezu who already found video proof of Bakugou's bullying (recorded during the point immediately above), which leads to the two being separated and Bakugo being placed in Class 1-B.
    • After Nezu finds out the truth about Bakugo, he personally redoes all their background checks on the students and discovers that Mineta has a history of sexual harassment that was scrubbed clean by his connections. Since officially he has no record and his mother is on U.A.'s school board, they cannot simply deny his enrollment, but they can take precautions to protect their female students from him. This leads to Mineta also being placed in Class 1-B and Class 1-A having all the girls in one class with Izuku, Tenya, Kaminari, Kirishima, Koda, Tokoyami, and Tetsutetsu. Tetsutetsu is the only boy in 1-A here who was in 1-B in canon.
    • Due to Izuku being distracted by Danger Sense, he doesn't decide to pass his status as class representative to Tenya after the latter calms everyone down during the break-in at UA.
    • Izuku catching Shigaraki in the act of stealing the class schedules results in several changes. Firstly, U.A.'s staff provides him with a panic button so that he can warn them the next time his Danger Sense goes off, which in turn lets U.A. staff know immediately when the USJ is attacked (because Izuku managed to press it before a Quirk-based jammer could fully kick in). Secondly, U.A., knowing an attack is coming, take precautions and so were already prepared for the USJ attack, with Hound Dog accompanying the students and All Might not using his limited time to stop petty crime. Thirdly, because the League of Villains realizes the second point, they bring additional Nomu when they finally do launch their attack. And fourthly, Izuku reporting on Shigaraki's Quirk being a five-point touch Quirk causes Snipe to aim and shoot off one of Shigaraki's fingers, making him less able to use it.
    • Out of concern that Bakugou and Mineta may cause them bad press at the Sports Festival, Nezu arranges a joint training between Classes 1-A and 1-B to test the two before they have a chance to cause them a P.R. disaster. The staff justify it to their students by citing Mirio's Wardrobe Malfunction that caused him to flash everyone watching as a cover for the real reason they are doing this. As a consequence of their behavior during their fights with Ochako and Momo respectively, Bakugo (for use of lethal force after specifically being told not to) and Mineta (for blatantly groping Momo) are expelled.
    • None of the canon Cavalry Battle teams are formed up due to all the different relationship dynamics. For example, Tsuyu joins Izuku's team instead of Fumikage, who teams up with Reiko, Kuroiro, and Shoji.
      • As a consequence of this, the tournament changes its lineout, with Akira Fuki, Kamakiri, Monoma, Pony, Rin, and Tsuyu replacing Aoyama, Bakugo, Denki, Fumikage, Sero, and Tetsutetsu.
      • Izuku's first fight is against Monoma instead of Shinso (who fights Momo). He does still fight Shinso, but thanks to Momo and then Iida he knows of Shinso's Quirk and beats him near-instantly.
      • Iida is defeated by Shinso in the quarter-finals.
      • Ochako reaches the semifinals after defeating Rin and Tsuyu but loses to Todoroki.
      • Izuku wins the tournament by defeating Todoroki in the final match. Also, while he still convinces Todoroki to start using his fire, rather than pointing out that the fire half of his Quirk is his instead of Endeavor's, he appeals to his desire to make a positive mark as a hero and help people feel safe.
    • Due to a combination of Bakugo not being in Class 1-A, Izuku not trying to downplay Bakugo's abrasive attitude, and the Bonding Quirk clearly conveying how much Izuku hates being called "Deku", Ochako never redefines it for him, leaving it out of the running as a potential hero name. He chooses Kyuseishu instead.
    • The spring internship choices change: Izuku goes for Sir Nighteye, Itsuka for Gunhead, Momo for Fatgum, Ochako for Ryukyu, Tsuyu for Gang Orca, and Tenya (after All Might's intervention) for Gran Torino.
    • Due to Izuku having access to Blackwhip before the Shie Hassaikai arc starts, Overhaul gets captured before the raid can even happen. Much like Snipe shooting off one of Shiragaki's fingers, Izuku immediately recognizing a five-point-touch-based Quirk sees Blackwhip used to orchestrate said capture in a Curb-Stomp Battle.
    • As David Shield learns about One for All and that All Might has picked Izuku as his successor before the internships, he scraps the plan to get the Quirk Amplification Device to All Might, fires Sam and warns the island (and American hero Star and Stripe) about Wolfram's arrival, which leads to the latter's arrest (by the American hero) and the derailing of the My Hero Academia: Two Heroes plot.
    • Endeavor coming forward during the Summer Camp with his past abuse of Rei and his family throws a wrench into Dabi's plans to ruin his reputation. Instead of society rallying against heroes as a result of the fallout, it suddenly makes the HPSC look either corrupt or foolish.
    • Because Aoyama doesn't know his Quirk came from All For One, he unthinkingly reveals to Izuku that his Quirk was "awakened" by a Japanese specialist.
    • Izuku ends up being captured during the League's raid on the summer training camp.
    • Instead of Tomura overcoming his mental blocks during the Meta Liberation Army arc, he pretty much speedruns it after the League captures Izuku.
    • Due to Endeavor willingly airing his dirty laundry, instead of Dabi making the big reveal at the end of the Paranormal Liberation Army arc, Dabi ends up starting to go through a bit of a breakdown that his plans are now shot.
    • The girls unlocking Level 4 allows them to teleport to Kamino Ward, granting the heroes the upper hand in the fight against the League of Villains.
    • Izuku getting Search allows him to find the last few civilians still in Kamino, and Diagnosis and Overhaul let him heal all the injured heroes, which allows All Might to go full out sooner. All three mentioned Quirks are among the eleven Izuku and his polycule outright steals from All for One, along with a copy of Super Regeneration, while 23 others are destroyed.
    • With the League reduced to Tomura, Dabi, and Canopy, the MLA dismisses them as threats, and the events of the Meta Liberation Army arc are Adapted Out.
    • All of Class 1-A (plus Mei and Melissa) pass the License Exam, and without Shoto around, Inasa does so as well.
    • Since he already interned with Nighteye after the Sports Festival, Izuku takes his Work Studies under Mirko.
    • The Joint Training is taken at Nabu Island.
    • Thanks to all the additional Quirks gained during the Nabu Island arc, Izuku is capable of using 100% of One for All as of the arc.
    • With Hisashi's investigation close to expose them, the Meta Liberation Army decides to make the first move and starts its Uprising two months before their canon version.
    • Upon receiving the original version of All for One, Tomura kills Mugen and seizes control of his Quirks.
  • Polyamory: Polygamy has been legal in Japan since the Dark Age of Quirks and the Meta Liberation Army uprising resulted in a population drop and Japan wanted to increase their population. Besides Izuku's group, known polycules include:
    • The Wild Wild Pussycats, though it's mentioned they're looking for a fifth member.
    • Eijiro, Tetsutetsu, Mina, and Setsuna form one after the first term's finals.
    • Denki and Itsuka both agree to independently date Kyoka at the same time.
    • Star and Stripe is in a polyamorous relationship with her whole flight squad.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Downplayed. Yui and Pony won during the Heroes vs Villains exercise but did not do as well as they could have partially because the former isn't good at speaking in general and the latter isn't fully fluent in Japanese, causing them to interfere with each other's plans. It's why neither got the MVP despite their team winning. It's also why they are paired together in the practical end-of-term exams.
    • All Might and David Shield once nearly started a war with Mexico during a case in southern Arizona when they ran into two Mexican heroes and none of them spoke very good Spanish. It was only pure luck that All Might switched to Japanese and learned both heroes were relatively fluent in Japanese.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure:
    • According to his brother, Mugen came up with the names "All for One" and "One for All" entirely on his own, saying that he never read The Three Musketeers. Hell, he apparently never finished a book in his life.
    • Similarly, while he was in power, Mugen apparently destroyed any reference to old superhero comics, both to prevent the populace from getting inspired and to spite his geek of a brother, meaning that barely anyone recognises Spider-Man references in the modern day.
    • When Izuku enhances Laser Disc to the point where he can effectively fire energy blasts with them, Yoichi demands to name them. Izuku doesn't understand what King Kamehameha has to do with it, and doesn't recognize the name Hadoken until he plays Super Smash Bros. Eternal.
  • Power Incontinence: Many Quirks have this problem due to how they express themselves. Ryouji and Isamu says that it was common in the early generation of Quirks, which didn't always come with Required Secondary Powers.
    • Yuga Aoyama's "Navel Laser" can leak if not properly contained. This is a hint that it actually came from the aforementioned early generation, given to him by All for One.
    • Koji Koda once called all the vermin in the building with "Anivoice", causing him to become The Quiet One.
    • Rikiya Yotsubashi's "Stress" expresses itself in the form of liver spots on his face.
    • When Izuku and Toru scare some of their classmates, all of them accidentally activate their Quirks, including Mina melting the log she was sitting on and Setsuna falling apart at the seams.
  • The Power of Love:
    • Bonding is this trope in Quirk form. As the bonded individuals develop their relationship, they can gain more power from the love fueling their relationship. It starts from granting increased empathy, and the next levels include outright telepathy, Quirk sharing and a boost to all physical abilities, teleporting to a bonded's location, and cheating death.
    • All for One's musings reveal that the original owners of the Bonding and Stockpile Quirks were lovers. Knowing that, he theorizes that even if he did take measures to protect his collection of Quirks from being absorbed by Stockpile, it would never have worked in Bonding's specific case. In essence, the reason One for All reached Singularity earlier than predicted by the vestiges is because of the original owners of Bonding and Stockpile loving each other.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • Toshinori mutters "shit" in English when Inko faints upon seeing him at the front door.
    • Aoyama says "Merde" when he learns that Izuku was only using 8% of his power during the fight against Todoroki.
    • Izuku and Ochako's mutual "we're fucked" when they find out they're facing All Might in their first semester practical exam.
    • All Might lets out a "fuck" in English when he and Izuku figure out that Dabi is Touya Todoroki.
  • Punny Name: Yui wants to call the sword she intends to get "TsuRuleGi", combining her Hero name with "tsurugi", a Japanese sword.
  • Pyrrhic Victory:
    • All for One manages to take Overhaul's Quirk, but Overhaul's last-ditch use of the Quirk makes All for One's hands so deformed that he can't use Overhaul - and not even Super Regeneration lets him recover his hands.
    • The League of Villains manage to capture Ragdoll and Izuku, but lose most of their people in the process - one of them, Rappa, actually leads the heroes to the League's hideout - none of the students are gravely hurt, and their third target (Eri) manages to avoid getting caught. Nevermind that the consequences end in an own goal by All for One.

    Tropes Q-Z
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Downplayed since Mineta's actions are not known to have made it that far, but U.A.'s teachers are not happy to uncover evidence that he is a serial sexual harasser that his family covered up. Mineta later openly groping Momo is the final straw and it results in a swift expulsion and Momo's father pressing charges against him and his family for enabling him for so long.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Izuku has one for Nighteye, disassembling his motivation for giving Mirio One for All when it would kill him and shooting down all his counterarguments before he can make them.
    • While on his counterinsurgency against the first Destro, Isamu had one calling out the Quirkist villain for killing every Quirkless individual he could find, even those that supported their own loved ones with Quirks. It was eventually recorded and made to the present day.
    • Tomura has one calling out All for One about how he didn't think through creating a protege with enough willpower to supposedly steal One for All, when he would also have enough willpower to defy All for One himself.
  • Recruiting the Criminal: After the Tartarus jailbreak, Snipe tracks down Lady Nagant and recruits her to Nezu's side, now that her old handlers the HPSC are out of the picture.
  • Red Baron: The Ennead is nicknamed "The Bolts of Kamino" after the Kamino Raid.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The notes in Chapter 56 make note of three such pairs featuring in the chapter, Eraserhead and Present Mic, En and Daigoro, and Hitoshi and Akira.
  • Refusal of the Call: Downplayed. Izuku refuses to help Nezu test Bakugo's suitability for participating in the Sports Festival, stating he's spent the last decade being used to further Bakugo's career and he's done. Ochako ends up taking that role (as Izuku instead fights Shoto).
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • The Second Bearer's sister is one of Bakugou's ancestors.
    • Hisashi and Endeavour are third-cousins, which in turn makes Izuku and Shouto fourth-cousins.
    • All for One took great pains to defy this trope, spending decades to kill any relatives he had until he was the only one of his family left, making it impossible for him to be related, however distantly, to any living person.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: After Izuku gains Overhaul's Quirk, he uses it to remove the weaknesses of a few of his associates:
    • Aoyama's body is reworked to better withstand the recoil of his Navel Laser (which, as a first-generation Quirk given to him by All for One, did not come with Required Secondary Powers), as well as an organic jewel to focus it.
    • Aizawa's Quirk shuts off when he is forced to blink, so Izuku gives his eyes a nictitating membrane (translucent secondary eyelids) so that he can blink and hydrate his eyes without his Quirk shutting off.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: Played for Laughs. Aizawa attempts to quit the moment Nezu decided to put all the first-year female hero students in his class, but Nezu rejects it. Vlad chimes in saying if he has to deal with the crap that comes from that year's crop of hero students, then so does Aizawa.
  • Revenge Before Reason:
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons:
    • Mineta assumes Izuku has a harem because he's "a super-strong guy in a class full of hotties". While Izuku does have a harem, it's both because of his empathic bonds and his kindhearted nature.
    • Re-Destro comments that Izuku "couldn't have a Meta Ability with an extra toe joint" and that he must have stolen it somehow. While it is possible to have a Quirk and still have the toe joint, he's right that Izuku was Quirkless until given one by someone else (specifically All Might, who later is one of two to defeat the villain).
  • Rousing Speech: Izuku seems to be very good at making them at the drop of a hat.
    • A short one after Aizawa threatens to expel the lowest-ranked student in the Quirk Assessment test.
    • Izuku's speech at the beginning of the Sports Festival, where he challenges all the other students to show any villain watching why they should think twice before trying to mess up with U.A. He even includes the other courses, to ensure nobody's left out as well as prove they won't be easy targets.
    • During his fight with Todoroki, he convinces him to use all of his Quirk by stating he wants both of their classes to stand together and work to become the future Symbol of Peace as a whole, ensuring society won't depend on a single person anymore. This one ends up going viral, and Izuku becomes famous all over Japan.
  • Rule of Cool: Daigoro has a bandoleer containing various tools and medical supplies, but admits that they're in bullet-shaped containers "because it looks cool".
  • Running Gag:
    • Izuku pulling a notebook out of seemingly nowhere.
    • People thinking that Izuku is All Might's secret love child.
    • Izuku making guesses as to what species of animal Nezu was before being experimented on. It's finally resolved in chapter 45, whereupon it's replaced with the gag of Izuku telling everyone else all the different species that Nezu is.
    • Monoma's paroxysms as he learns how powerful Izuku truly is.
  • Sadist Teacher:
    • Izuku's previous teachers enabled or outright encouraged his abuse.
    • Downplayed with Aizawa. He wants to be a Stern Teacher, but his methods make him look like Izuku's previous teachers. Shocked after Izuku tells him this, Aizawa resolves to improve himself.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Dark Shadow is female. Somehow. It's likely a reference to chapter 84 of My Hero Academia Smash!!, where Tokoyami gets hit with a Quirk that turns other Quirks into human forms and Dark Shadow's human form is of a little girl with long hair mimicking the "umbilical cord" present when Dark Shadow manifests.
  • Sarcastic Well Wishing: At the end of chapter 9, Vlad King sarcastically congratulates Bakugo on being the first-ever instance of him expelling a student before Aizawa.
  • Schmuck Bait: Even after she gets a better hero costume, Momo decides to wear her original Ms. Fanservice costume to the inter-class duels, knowing it will truly put Mineta to the test. Needless to say, Mineta completely fails.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: The main reason that Mineta was able to keep a clean record despite his actions that could be classified as sexual harassment was because he has family members on multiple school boards, including U.A. It is later Defied by Nezu when he arranges a match between Momo and Mineta to test the latter's self-control: none of Mineta's connections will save him from a lawsuit coming from Momo's extremely wealthy and influential (not to mention utterly pissed off) father.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Played for Laughs. When Aizawa finds out he has all 13 female hero students in his class his response is to attempt to quit on the spot.
  • Secret Test of Character:
    • A combat exercise between members of 1-A and 1-B acts as one for Mineta and Bakugo to see if they've learned from their time on probation (of 44 total people involved, only three people - specifically Momo, Izuku, and Vlad King - know of the test thanks to Izuku and Momo meeting Nezu beforehand, Vlad King being the homeroom teacher of the two being tested, and a clever excuse using Mirio's Permeation-induced accidental flashing as a reason for the exercise). Both fail, Mineta by groping Momo (deliberately using her old Midnight-inspired costume as bait) and Bakugo by using a lethal attack against Ochako.
    • Immediately afterward, Bakugo is offered the chance to enter Ketsubutsu's villain reform program. He almost takes it before admitting he obviously "can't make decisions for shit" and tells Nezu to do what he wants. This time, Bakugo passes and Nezu sends Ketsubutsu a recommendation letter regarding him.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Fumikage and Reiko immediately hit it off when they realize they share similar interests. After they survive the USJ incident, they have started holding hands, and Dark Shadow later mentions Fumikage likes Reiko. Finally becomes real during I-Expo.
    • Koji and Kinoko are seen together after the USJ incident, and Koji mentions he likes the girl because (among other things) her love of the forest. While their status is unknown, during the Summer Camp arc Kinoko is seen giving Pixie-Bob a Slasher Smile when the elder heroine makes eyes at Koji.
    • Denki states he likes Kyoka, who later blushes when looking at him and glares at Pixie-Bob when she eyes him up. It turns into a relationship where Denki and Itsuka share Kyoka.
    • Tenya and Ibara begin to feel this during the Sports Festival.
  • Shipper on Deck: Played for Laughs. When Ochako's father gets an idea of just how insanely wealthy Momo's family is, he jokingly suggests Ochako marry her as well as Izuku.
  • Shout-Out: Has its own page.
  • Shown Their Work:
    • griffinguy24 has a degree in Mesoamerican studies. For those tropers not familiar, Mesoamerica refers to much of modern-day Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala before the Spanish Conquistadors known as pre-Columbian civilizations as they more or less thrived before they got decimated by the Spanish in the 16th century. This knowledge let him come up with names for Tigre's Smashes:
      • Fire: Tenochtitlan, on which modern-day Mexico City is built, was the home city of the Mexican people who became the rulers of the Triple Alliance that we now call the Aztec Empire. It was chosen for the fire smash because it was burnt by Cortez's men in La Noche Triste.
      • Lightning: Teotihuacan was a huge city in the central valley of Mexico that predates the Aztec empire and its ruins are northeast of Mexico City. Historians don't even know who originally founded it, it was abandoned long before any of the tribes contacted by Europeans were even formed. It literally means "city of the gods" in Nahuatl because it was believed to have been created by the gods themselves. The most common visual motif of Teotihuacan was a figure that would eventually become the god Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain and thunder.
      • Water: Texcoco was one of the three city-states in the Aztec Triple Alliance, and was also the name of the (now drained) Lake Texcoco that Tenochtitlan and by extension Mexico City was built upon.
      • Wind: Chichen Itza was the name of a Yucatan city that was partly Mayan, but had been conquered/influenced by the Toltecs as well. Its most iconic piece of architecture was the Pyramid of Kukulcan, which represents the wind.
      • Earth: Palenque was a Maya city in Chiapas Mexico, where a large number of modern Maya people still live. The pyramids at Palenque were some of the few Mesoamerican pyramids that served as tombs (most were temples), to a king known as Pakal, which means shield. And shielding is what the Earth power does.
      • Wood: While not mentioned, the wood smash was named after Tikal, a Maya city in Guatemala, which was in the middle of an impenetrable jungle when it was found.
      • Shadow: And lastly, Copan was a Maya city in Honduras. It was the southernmost city that historians and anthropologists consider Mesoamerica. According to the author, this was the least connected city to the others, a fitting name for the shadow element.
    • All of the Mexican Heroes and the students are based around Mexican folklore and legends.
    • He also shows off his fascination with zoology in two areas: the Running Gag of guessing what Nezu's species actually is, and when the whole class gets to go to Kuraudo Island, land of Living Dinosaurs.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When Bakugo threatens to beat Izuku after coming first place in the Entrance Exam while implying the latter could have only passed by cheating or bribing someone, Izuku just activates Full Cowl and shuts him (and the entire class) up. A classmate recording the threat on their phone and then posting the video online quickly becomes a Chekhov's Gun when Nezu finds it.
  • Side Bet:
    • The staff of U.A. have a yearly betting pool on when Eraserhead will expel his students.
    • The Hero Community has a betting pool on who is Izuku dating. Gang Orca bet on Tsuyu. Shishido bet on there being a polycule.
    • Mina and Kirishima lose a bet to Kaminari on what they'll face for the final exams.
    • Sero loses twice to Kaminari - the first on Izuku's reaction to learning about the former's Quirk, the second on Tenya's reaction to learning about the first bet.
    • There was a large betting pool at U.A. on what the deal is with Izuku's Quirk. The closest is Kendo who bet on Izuku being haunted and channelling the Quirks of dead people.
  • Something Only They Would Say:
    • Takashi recognizes Izuku as a fellow HeroNet forumite from his wording about not exposing a Hero's weaknesses.
    • Gran Torino accepts that Izuku is actually talking to Nana when the latter brings up "the day of the marshmallows"
  • Small Role, Big Impact:
    • The Bond Quirk user, Hitoshi Marubashi. He doesn't appear at all (until a Quirk-induced flashback in chapter 31), but him being the Stockpile Quirk user's husband leads to Bond getting absorbed by Stockpile before All for One forced the latter into Yoichi Shigaraki, which causes One for All to hit singularity a few months ahead of schedule. This lets Izuku learn of One for All's true nature sooner and gives him access to the Torchbearers' vestiges, letting him come up with Full Cowl and the previous Bearers' Quirks months sooner than canon.
    • Kai Chisaki is defeated in his very first scene and dead only a couple chapters later. However, he's responsible for Eri's mental trauma, mutilates Mugen to the point the man can't use his hands, let alone Overhaul (which Izuku, the one who defeated him, later steals himself), and his minions get recruited into the League of Villains.
    • Nezu got his name and catchphrase from a biology student who encountered him while working in the rainforest, and then was killed while she was trying to free him from the laboratory where he was being experimented on. She's only mentioned in one paragraph, but she was likely the reason why Nezu became the person he is instead of a human-hating monster bent on revenge.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • The unnamed classmate in Izuku and Bakugo's middle school who recorded Bakugo attacking Izuku and uploaded it to the Internet. When Nezu gets his paws on the video, it leads to an investigation into Aldera Middle School (which is closed for their actions) and prompts a thorough background check on all the students - which causes Bakugo and Mineta to be put on probation and in 1-B, while Izuku and all of the girls in that year are put in 1-A. Neither Bakugo nor Mineta make it to the Sports Festival after failing a Secret Test of Character during a prior battle trial.
    • Eri becomes this several times:
      • Her running away from Overhaul triggers his downfall.
      • Her Quirk completely up-ends Sir Nighteye's.
      • Her accidental healing of All Might destroys All for One's plans to cause a morale drop by showing All Might's emaciated form.
    • Hisashi Midoriya not only helps bring down Dabi's plan to ruin Endeavor, it is implied he and his team will soon take on the Meta Liberation Army - all because Ochako requested something.
    • Endeavor deciding to confess his history of domestic abuse torpedoes two plots simultaneously: the HPSC can no longer point to him as a shining example of heroism under their thumb, and Dabi has lost all catharsis at getting his revenge on his old man.
  • Spotting the Thread:
    • Shoji points out the biggest flaw in Bakugo's "Deku was pretending to be Quirkless just to laugh at me" delusion by stating nobody would pretend to be Quirkless as there's nothing to gain from it. Left unsaid is all the discrimination they'd face for (allegedly) being Quirkless.
    • When Izuku speaks with Aoyama about his Quirk, the latter mentions he was also a late bloomer and that he went to a "specialist" with a history of "unlocking people's hidden Quirks". When Izuku looks at Aoyama's shoes (which are bespoke shoes from a specialised tailor), he and the Vestiges realize Aoyama likely got his Quirk from All for One.
  • Squee: Dinosaur fan Setsuna shrieks with glee when she hears that the classes are going to Kuraudo Island for one of their study trips - the island of repopulated Living Dinosaurs. And she gets louder when she later gets to ride one.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: None of the Vestiges know why One for All hit singularity a few hours after Izuku inherited it as opposed to several months, or how it has a Quirk that allows the user to form empathic bonds with others - which none of the others had. When learning about the nature of One For All and how All For One actively kept the Stockpile Quirk away from his own Quirk so it wouldn't get absorbed, Izuku hypothesizes that Stockpile may have accidentally absorbed an empathy Quirk without All for One's knowledge. The vestiges admit that such an answer is quite likely. Then it turns out that the person with the empathy Quirk was the lover of the person with the stockpiling Quirk, so it had been added to the stockpile already, in a way.
  • Stunned Silence:
    • All of Aizawa's class goes dead silent when he finally agrees to Ms. Joke's proposition for a date. Even Ms. Joke is speechless, having no plan what to do next - at least until she gets her bearings.
  • Sucky School:
    • The faculty at Aldera Middle School are bigots and the student body was no better, with the students abusing the then Quirkless Izuku and the staff covering it up. Izuku later states that teachers fell into three categories: Ignoring the abuse, subtly encouraging it, and actively encouraging it.
    • Downplayed with Class 1-B of U.A. since it's just a single class instead of a whole school, but the presence of several toxic students with little if any positive influences in the class has led to a horrible class environment that is implied to have caused Vlad King to turn to alcoholism to cope with the stress of being their homeroom teacher by their third day. It's implied that Bakugo and Mineta's expulsion and their replacement with Shinso and Fuki will help revert this problem.
    • Bakugo claims U.A. to be this, but only because he's no longer the top dog and neither the teachers nor his classmates sycophantically defer to him and/or constantly stroke his ego.
  • Suddenly Bilingual:
    • Izuku reveals that he speaks English when he talks to Pony. He learned so that he could watch All Might's American interviews and speeches without a translation. Granted, given how much of an All Might fanboy Izuku is, it's likely that he does know English to some degree in canon, he just never uses it.
    • Izuku also knows Japanese Sign Language, which he learned whilst he still considered Bakugo a friend. The reason for this was so he and Bakugo could still communicate if Bakugo's explosions rendered him deaf. Bakugo attacked him when he learned this because he believed it was just Izuku thinking him weak.
  • Super-Empowering:
    • Izuku's Bonding Quirk allows him to do this to the girls he's bonded with. Chapter 31 shows a flashback where its original user names each level and that it has at least five levels.
      • At level 1 (Empathic Bond, triggered when the two feel an emotional connection), he and the girls have a degree of empathy with each other, allowing them to learn things to ease up their relationship.
      • At level 2 (Empowering Bond, triggered when either Izuku or the girl reaches a Love Epiphany), they get outright telepathy, the girls can talk with the Vestiges and they get a boost to their physical abilities while within Bond's range - said boost being 10% of their base times the number of Level 2 bonds and range being ten to the power of the number of level 2 bonds in meters, so when all the girls reach level 2, they gain a permanent 80% boost to their physical power. It can also grant greater bursts when in grievous danger (such as when Ochako entered Bullet Time in her fight with Bakugo during a Secret Test of Character for the latter in preparation for the Sports Festival).
      • At level 3 (Sharing Bond, triggered by Izuku and the girl reaching perfect synchronicity), the girl can use One for All (initially 1%, but growing with use) and the Quirk of the Vestige linked to them*, while their own Quirk is boosted and Izuku gets empowered in some way related to the girl's Quirk. It also allows the Vestige to manifest in the real world, but only Izuku and the girls can see them. The girls are also able to provide energy to One for All.
      • At level 4 (Attracting Bond, triggered by Izuku and the girl being separated and wanting to be in the same place), Izuku and the girls are able to teleport to each other. All the girls simultaneously unlock this level during the Kamino Raid, allowing them to teleport into the fight. It also allows the Vestiges to properly manifest for a short time, allowing other people to interact with them.
      • At level 5 (Undying Bond, trigger unknown so far), the Bond can heal one of the bonded from certain death, although the limits of this are unknown.
      • Through the combination of Bonding, One For All, and Momo's Creation Quirk, Izuku can give other people Quirks by creating copies of his collected Quirks and giving them to others through a strand of his hair. He gives Melissa a similar stockpiling Quirk called Battery as a proof of concept, returns an enhanced version of Search to Ragdoll, and then gives a gestalt Quirk he calls Superpower to All Might after the embers of One For All finally burn out.
    • Akira Fuki's Quirk, "Pep Talk", lets him boost people's strength, stamina, and speed by giving them compliments, potentially doubling a person's power for twelve hours. Unfortunately, he can't use it on himself.
  • Superpower Lottery: Much like canon, One for All is this, especially since Izuku has better control comparatively speaking and has access to his predecessors' original Quirks much more early on. It also borders on Story-Breaker Power, as Mina calls him OP and Setsuna outright calls One For All "bullshit" to the point of joking that that's on his Quirk registry.
    • As it turns out, it's even more powerful than that - as shown above in Super-Empowering, Izuku and the girls he bonds to end up becoming even stronger as their bonds evolve.
  • Suspiciously Clean Criminal Record: Lampshaded. After Bakugo and Mineta are both revealed to have people tampering with their records, Aizawa suggests that a clean record might be a red flag now.
  • Swarm of Rats: There's a thriving rat colony on U.A. grounds that Koji makes use of to attack his opponents and enemies.
  • Take That!: Chapter 77 sees Izuku admit he doesn't want to kill Shigaraki, but he'd rather do so than let anyone die because "[he] was too busy trying to save the life of a sociopath", a common criticism of canon's final arc.
  • Targeted to Hurt the Hero: Part of the reason why Re-Destro attacks All Might and Inko is because he expects this will hurt Izuku. It backfires horribly for him.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Izuku is riding a high after learning that not only did he pass the Entrance Exam, but did so with the best score, beating even All Might's record, and wonders what can bring him down now. A Gilligan Cut later, it turns out that Bakugo can.
    • When the Vestiges tell Izuku that he's going to get Danger Sense, Yoichi states he should have the time to get used to it since danger at school is minimal. The next morning, Yoichi apologizes because Danger Sense triggers right outside U.A.'s gates and gives Izuku a crippling headache - just as Shigaraki lies in waiting, ready for the initial moves leading to the USJ attack.
    • In Chapter 20 when Izuku runs into Eri, he notes that a small child running into him wasn't enough to trigger Danger Sense - just as Overhaul shows up, causing Danger Sense to essentially shriek into his ear.
    • After he finds out about Aoyama's potential link to All for One, Nezu thinks that they will have time to deal with that after the students return from the training camp. Cue all the panic buttons issued to the students at the training camp being activated.
  • Terminally Dependent Society: Izuku identifies this problem early in the story - All Might becoming Japan's Number One Hero alone means he's the only pillar keeping society up. Izuku instead wants himself and everyone else in the Hero Course to learn from All Might so they can all become pillars holding up society and prevent this problem in the future.
  • Terror Hero: Fumikage and Reiko turn the USJ Ruins Zone into a house of horrors. The villains there beg the heroes to save them.
  • That Came Out Wrong:
    • The day after Katsuki was arrested, Inko tells Izuku that it's not a good night for Ochako to stay over (because Bakugou's parents would discuss their son's transgressions with Izuku and Inko), and Ochako says that she's fine with not spending every night with Izuku, prompting Setsuna and Mina to tease her for the scandalous implications that they're sleeping together. Ochako groans at how she needs to word her sentences better.
    • During the training camp, Pixie-Bob tries to insist that "Kittens need to be groomed", in reference to the various students. When Mandalay asks if she wants her to repeat that back, Pixie-Bob admits she regretted it the moment she said it.
  • There Are No Therapists: While they certainly aren't licensed therapists, the vestiges waste no time in trying to help build up Izuku's pitiful amount of self-esteem and confidence. But as he tells them, it's hard trying to overcome over a decade of negative experiences. After All Might ends up spilling the beans on how he and Izuku met U.A.'s staff, they agree that Izuku needs therapy, and Hound Dog takes charge.
  • There Can Only Be One: A rather... odd example appears when they talk about the vestiges of the Stockpile user. Apparently, what is supposed to naturally happen is the stronger Quirk subsumes the weaker and the weaker vestige is removed(?) from the mental scape, which Yoichi reveals happened to the Stockpile user's vestige and what they assume happened to the Bond user's vestige when inside of All for One. Chapter 31 reveals that Stockpile's and Bond's vestiges managed to remain alive together, and when Stockpile was put into Yoichi, they decided to let his Gift Quirk subsume theirs and erase them, not wanting to survive without the other.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: When Mineta gropes her, Momo first tases him then throws a water balloon filled with capsaicin and butyric acid (basically, pepper spray combined with a stink bomb up to eleven) at his face. She later regrets the latter, admitting that the taser was probably enough.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: While never outright stated, it's undeniable that everyone has no tolerance of Bakugo's past treatment of Izuku simply because of the latter's past of being Quirkless.
  • Those Two Guys:
    • Kirishima and Tetsutetsu instantly hit it off.
      • They now have a third with Akira Fuki joining.
    • The second and third users of One for All are similarly portrayed as a duo who prefer each other's company compared to the rest of the vestiges. And later revealed to be married to each other.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Word of God is that Akira Fuki will be this to Vlad King when he joins Class 1-B, becoming The Heart that stabilizes the up-till-then Dysfunction Junction of a class.
  • Together in Death: In All for One's reaction to the Sports Festival, his internal thoughts reveal that the Stockpile Quirk he gave to his brother belonged to the lover of the person he took the Bond Quirk from - inferring that the Bond Quirk let itself be absorbed by the Stockpile Quirk.
  • Touché: Dabi says it when he angrily asks a captive Izuku what he's staring at, only for the latter to point out he's looking at the only other thing in the room.
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • Learning of Izuku's accomplishments during the USJ attack causes Bakugo to become so enraged that it "almost looped back around to calm".
    • Izuku and Tsuyu enter this state when they realize that Toru's "suit" is actually her going Invisible Streaker.
    • After Izuku is kidnapped by the League of Villains, Ochako is left a simmering pool of wrath that actually eclipses All Might's.
    • Midnight is visibly furious when she learns another hero called Mina a mutant.
  • Trap Master: Izuku and Momo in the Heroes vs Villains exam. In only ten minutes, they electrify the fire escape, put a flashbang on the roof entrance, cover the stairs in grease and ball bearings (with a bear trap at the end), fill the hallways with floodlights that prevent Tokoyami from using his Quirk, and make several fake bombs that are covered in a powerful adhesive. And, given Izuku and All Might's conversation afterwards, they likely had even more traps set up around the building.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Melissa Shield is The Team Normal and also the second least phased by being bonded to Izuku. She also takes the nature of One for All in stride, citing that she lives on an island used for developing secret technology and understands the idea of Need To Know.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty:
    • After Bakugo is expelled, Izuku states that he doesn't feel anything about it.
    • Gran Torino manages to get Tenya to understand that getting revenge on Stain for his attack on Tensei will not fix anything. As Gran Torino explains, his best friend was murdered by a villain who would later (seemingly) be killed by All Might. Afterwards, the only positivity Gran felt was that said villain would never harm anyone again.
  • Verbal Backspace:
    • When Momo hits Mineta with the equivalent of a stink bomb and pepper spray, All Might assures everyone that Recovery Girl will handle it. She angrily declares she isn't getting near "that shit" and All Might quickly states that the medical bots will do their best.
    • In chapter 11, Tsuyu remarks she could easily see herself dating anyone in the bond except maybe Mei.
Mei: Oh! That reminds me, Tsu-chan, I finished that waterproof suit-heater for your outfit today!
Tsuyu: Never mind. You're officially the best one here, ribbit.
  • Villain Takes an Interest:
    • In the aftermath of the Sports Festival, All for One realizes Izuku is the new bearer of One for All, and Stain sees him as a potential equal to All Might.
    • The same happens with Re-Destro, who tries to approach Izuku in his civilian identity to offer a sponsorship deal.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • Tomura doesn't take it well when Izuku reveals that his telepathic bond with his mates, the Vestiges, and All Might has been active almost the entire time he was in the villains' custody. Or as Izuku puts it in gaming terms, "Team chat's been on this whole time."
    • All for One devolves into wordless fury as all his attempts to break down All Might in their fight (mentioning Nana's grandson's fate, revealing his true form on live TV) completely fall flat, with All Might even returning the favor by calling him by his real name. All Might knew of Tenko's fate thanks to Izuku revealing it following the events at the USJ, and an accidental Rewind activation botched the true form reveal plan.
  • The Voiceless: All Might's vestige cannot talk and only expresses emotions. This is because All Might is still alive or still has access to One for All. Once Izuku's bond with Melissa reaches stage 2, he's able to communicate normally.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Izuku somehow attracts all sorts of trouble. His very first patrol results in a confrontation with Overhaul - and in the second one (barely a few hours later) he ends having to deal with Himiko Toga.
Sir Nighteye: It hasn't even been half an hour.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 40: Not only is Izuku taken by the League of Villains, but he's also hit by a Quirk erasing bullet (a temporary one, thankfully).
    • Chapter 42: When All for One tries to steal One for All, Izuku, the Vestiges, and the Ennead turn the tables and steal eleven Quirks (including Search and Overhaul) that immediately get added to One for All, while destroying another twenty-three.
    • Chapter 63: Nine attempts to steal One for All from Izuku, only for Monoma to jump in the way and cause an Assimilation Backfire that ends with the student permanently copying all the villain's Quirks, plus with a massive evolution of his own Copy. And Neito also ends up accidentally finding out about One for All and its history.
    • Chapter 68: The Tea Spillers reveal all of the Hero Public Safety Commission's dirty laundry, making sure that every single news agency has copies of the data so it's impossible to cover up. Just like that, the current hero society has received a mortal wound.
    • Chapter 70: The MLA officially begins their uprising with surprise bombing attacks (using their own unwilling members as bombs) across the country. Spinner is killed alongside the Commission President during his attack at their headquarters, and Rikiya Yotsubashi reveals himself as Re-Destro. The War arc has officially begun.
  • Wham Line:
    • After the fight between Bakugou and Ochako:
Vlad King: Ever since we've both started teaching here, I'd never had to expel a student before Eraserhead did. Not until you. You've violated your probation, Katsuki Bakugou. You're no longer my student.
    • Sir Nighteye quickly demands Izuku to hand One for All over to Mirio. Izuku immediately fires back:
Izuku: I’m not going to let you kill Mirio-senpai.
    • The moment where the depths of the hole All for One just jumped in are shown:
Almost as soon as he activated Search, its vestige, dressed in the costume of the Hero Ragdoll, ran towards the portal.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Due to her No Social Skills, Mei mistook her romantic interest in Izuku as "a combination of friendship and side effects of sleep deprivation".
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • When someone commenting on the story mentioned that they couldn't wait for Izuku to call out Sir Nighteye over his OFA succession "discussion", the author indirectly confirmed that it'll eventually be happening, even mentioning keeping the plot point of OFA gradually killing any Quirked person it's passed on to primarily for said call out.
      • And then it happens, with Izuku delivering an absolutely blistering "The Reason You Suck" Speech where he preemptively shoots down all of Nighteye's potential arguments and caps it off by stating that he might as well leave if Nighteye still intends to have Izuku pass One for All to Mirio.
    • When Monoma talks about Class 1-A "stealing the spotlight" due to the attack on the USJ, Kaibara calls him out, pointing out that 1-A was attacked by villains who wanted to kill them.
    • Izuku indirectly calls Endeavor out for all he did for the sake of becoming the Number One Hero or turning Shouto into that.
    • Izuku calls out Shouto for only using half of his power, pointing out that the world outside the school won't give a damn about him not using his fire just to spite Endeavor.
    • Toru is implied to have given one to Setsuna and Mina for snooping in on private conversations by pressuring Kyoka into using her Quirk for eavesdropping. When it's mentioned, Izuku is uncomfortable with what Toru's doing despite his own anger at them but withdraws his objections when Momo states that he might have forgiven them but the rest of them haven't.
    • David Shield is called out by both All Might and Melissa when he admits to trying to set up the heist for the quirk amplification device. Thankfully, he takes steps to prevent said heist from even happening (including calling in American hero Star and Stripe, who catches Wolfram and his crew before they could try anything).
    • Hisashi calls out Endeavor for what he did to his family.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: In-Universe.
    • Izuku gives a gentle one to Momo regarding her costume, pointing out that she's completely sacrificed any protection for the sake of Quirk use and that the shelf on her back means falling wrong will break her spine.
    • Mei makes a short one when pointing out how absurd it is for Ochako's boots to have heels.
    • When Izuku sees Mineta's hero costume; while he can tell it's meant to evoke a bowl of grapes, it makes Mineta look as if he's wearing a diaper.
    • Izuku declares that Toru not having a DNA-encoded costume means the Support Company responsible for her costume either 1) Never heard of DNA-encoded material, making them incompetent 2) Decided it would be too bothersome to use it, making them lazy, 3) Liked the idea of a fifteen-year-old running around naked, making them deserving of Momo's treatment of Mineta.
    • When Izuku meets Rikiya Yotsubashi, Detnetrat's CEO, he gets to call him out on the shoddy quality of the suits his company made for his classmates - such as Momo's, who also gets to call him out as well. And then he calls him out on the sheer hostility in regards to their policy towards Quirkless people.
  • Worthy Opponent: Implied. After the Sports Festival, Shigaraki says Izuku isn't a mid-boss but a second player in the game.
  • X Days Since: 1-A has a "X Days Since 1-A Had Villain Trouble" sign that was put up at the beginning of work studies. Current record is seven days.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Izuku does this when Momo quickly loses to Shinso, telling her that she was amazing. This ends up triggering their bond's second level.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious:
    • Bakugo realizes something is going on when Izuku stops calling him 'Kacchan'.
    • Mei, after stating she had already forgotten Izuku's name a second after he presented himself, actually uses it after their bond forms.
  • You Do Not Want To Know:
    • Einosuke and Kayo Yaoyorozu once tasked their best forensic accountant (Hisashi) with figuring out where Nedzu gets his money from. His official report is just "You don’t want to know".
    • When Izuku researches the stuff Destro did during his heyday, Isamu tells him that everything was heavily censored and that he's better off not knowing how low Destro fell.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!:
    • Izuku and all the Vestiges have this response when he forms a bond with Momo only a few hours after forming one with Mei.
    • When Izuku hypothesizes that All For One may have accidentally and unknowingly let an empathy/bonding Quirk fuse with the Stockpile Quirk before forcing it on Yoichi, the vestiges are just stunned. It ended up being a little more complicated than they thought.
  • You Just Told Me: Dabi confirms the fact that he is Touya Todoroki when Gran Torino lists his real name with the rest of the League of Villains identities. When Dabi asks how did the heroes know who he was, All Might responds that they speculated until Dabi confirmed it for them.
  • You Remind Me of X: When Nana sees Shigaraki having a tantrum, she mentions it feels familiar. Izuku later realizes it's because it's similar to Nana's son's tantrum, a clue to Shigaraki being Nana's grandson.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame:
    • Sir Nighteye feels ashamed when he learns that the only people who share his (uninformed) opinion of Izuku are Internet Trolls.
    • Tenya name-drops the trope when Stain states his approval of him as a hero.
    • Kota is stunned when Izuku tells him that Overhaul had planned to return to what it was before Quirks showed up - just after saying how he hates Heroes because they just go kill themselves.
Kota walked away in a daze after hearing that. It was hard enough to hear that a Villain was hurting a kid like yourself. It was quite another to hear that the Villain wanted the same thing you did.

Tropes in the Unstable Compound Spin-Off
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Bakugo shoots several at the HPSC official who offers him a deal to be a hero again:
    • Upon learning that the HPSC can wipe Bakugo's criminal record clean, Bakugo asks if all the people who enabled him will also be pardoned and given a clean slate. The official has no answer for this question.
    • After Bakugo summarizes how people blindly praising him non-stop and covering up all his misdeeds led to him being expelled from UA and labeled a villain, why should he accept a deal to cover his past misdeeds from somebody praising him blindly? This causes the official to threaten Bakugo into taking the deal.
    • Lastly, when the HPSC official disparages Ketsubutsu's rehabilitation program claiming that very few of those former villains went on to become heroes, Bakugo asks if any of them relapsed into villainy. The official is forced to admit that none of them did, while Bakugo points out that Lady Nagant, a beneficiary of the HPSC, went nuts and killed the last head of the HPSC. The official leaves without any further words.
  • Bring It: After Bakugo rejects the HPSC's deal, for the sake of Ketsubutsu's rehabilitation program, the HPSC official warns him that very few people from that program go on to become Pro Heroes, none of them even managed to break into the top 100, and all of them were lower ranked than Bakugo. Bakugo simply welcomes the challenge.
  • History Repeats: Defied. Bakugo is visited by an HPSC official who praises him for his Quirk and potential to be a hero and promises him a deal in order to be a hero again, his criminal record scrubbed clean, and Izuku being forced to sign an NDA in order to keep quiet about him under threat of never becoming a Pro Hero. Bakugo realizes that this is the story of his life: people praising him for his Quirk and claiming he's destined for greatness while downplaying or ignoring all his unheroic deeds because they were aimed at unimportant people, which ended with him being hated by All Might, expelled from UA and labeled a villain, and the people who enabled him behind bars. This prompts Bakugo to reject the deal and stick to Ketsubutsu's rehabilitation program.
Bakugo: Here’s the thing, I’ve had lots of people blow smoke up my ass, telling me how awesome my Quirk was, how I’m such a good fit for being a Hero. Most of them didn’t bring up the shit I did, and if anyone did, they said it didn’t matter because I was destined for great things. Hell, they falsified my records, made it seem like whatever shit I did was my victim’s fault. Now, after going to U.A., I learned that actual fucking Heroes give far less of a shit about how awesome my Quirk is, and more about how I treat people. And pretty much all of those shitheads who told me that I was Hero material have been arrested for villainy or aiding in villainy. Are you going to be going to them and offering them a clean slate, too?
HPSC Official: Where are you going with this, Bakugou-kun?
Bakugo: Well, the fact is that the last time I listened to people blowing smoke up my ass about how awesome I am, who covered up the fucked-up shit I did, I ended up in this shithole, so why should I trust it when you come here with that same exact offer?
  • I Like Those Odds: Hearing that only ten percent of Ketsubutsu's rehabilitation program become heroes and none ever reach the top hundred merely causes Bakugo to declare that it'll be a much bigger deal when he does. The statistic Bakugo finds more important is that 0% of the graduates of the rehabilitation program have reverted to being villains.
  • Mr. Smith: The HPSC official that visits Bakugo is named Taro Sato, which are the most common first and last names in Japan, respectively, leading Bakugo to deduce that's not his real name. This is commented further by the author, claiming it would be the same as going under "John Smith"; people would assume it's a pseudonym.
  • The Nondescript: Taro Sato is described as being so incredibly bland that he'd "get lost in the crowd" if there was a second person in the room.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Taro Sato very casually states that the HPSC could make it very difficult, if not impossible, for Izuku or Bakugo to become heroes, depending on whether Bakugo takes their deal.
  • Too Good to Be True: Bakugo namedrops the trope when he hears the HPSC's deal in order to scrub his record clean and allow him to train to be a hero again. He concludes that the deal is, indeed, too good to be true and refuses to take it.
