On Earth and Boiling Isles
is an Owl House Alternate Universe Fic written by GeminiAlchemist, the same creator responsible for A Blight on Bonesborough. This fic is built upon the Fandom-Specific Plot of repurposing Luz and Amity’s beta designs to serve as the protagonists’ older siblings, with occasional check-ins on the Boiling Isles’ side of things.
Luz is an overactive girl being sent to Summer camp. Her sister is a punk who picked too many fights on her sister’s behalf and is stuck taking Summer classes to make up for a suspension.
Luz goes to the Boiling Isles, and meets Amity Blight, a witch who is her rival-turned-friend-turned-girlfriend.
Lucia is stuck in class, and meets Amelia, a green haired, pointy earred girl and local class flirt.
Luz destroys the portal that will take her back home at the end of the summer to keep it out of an Emperors hands.
Lucia greets her sister back from Summer camp, and can’t shake the feeling that something is very wrong.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Aerith and Bob: A mild variant — Amelia has the relatively uncommon surname of "Bane". When she gets the idea to graffiti "Bane was here" onto an abandoned building, Lucia points out that the police will either trace it back to her or "a Batman villain".
- Almost Kiss: Lucia and Amelia are hit with this twice. A monster interrupts them both times.
- Balcony Wooing Scene: Luz suggests that Lucia stand outside Amelia's window, holding a boombox over her head after the date-gone-wrong.
- Big Sister Instinct: The reason Lucia is being sent to summer school in the first place is because of her repeated tendency to pick fights with those who tease her younger sister, as a result of the school’s lack of proactive action towards punishing Luz’s bullies.
- Closet Key: In contrast to Luz, who figured out her orientation at thirteen, Lucia didn't realize that she was a lesbian until she met Amelia.
- Decomposite Character: Lucia and Amelia are physically modeled after Luz and Amity's "beta" designs and, as such, adopt many of the
Fanon traits associated with them, but are depicted as Luz and Amity's siblings in this fic, with canon being altered in subtle and major ways as a result of these additions. - Kill It with Fire: The Orthrursa demon, which Lucia and Amelia encounter in Chapter 4, has highly flammable fur — something they both discover when Amelia accidentally conjures fire to kill the thing.
- This eventually becomes Amelia's go-to attack, with its effectiveness varying from combatant to combatant.
- Shout-Out:
- Lucia briefly mentions She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, describing the aftermath of binging it as "one very long week of peak bisexual energy from Luz".
- Lucia calls the second demon her and Amela stumble upon as "Brother Bear".
- While killing the Isleium Praereptor in Chapter 7 via Punctuated Pounding, Lucia refers to the thing as a "God. Damn. Audrey. Two. Mother. Fucker!
- Sibling Yin-Yang: Luz is overactive and friendly, if socially awkward, girl. Lucia is a punk who's willing to get physical with picking on her little sister, but far more socially confident.
- In a subtle example, Amelia's hair is naturally green and she dyes the roots brown, as opposed to Amity's hair being brown, which she dyes green.
- Simultaneous Arcs: While the events of this fic occur in the Human Realm, Luz is experiencing the events of Seasons 1 and 2 on the other side of the portal.
- Third Time's The Charm: Lucia and Amelia finally get their kiss in Chapter 7, but they're interrupted by Camila before it goes much further.
- With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: When Amelia states her need to help those with the powers she has, Lucia directly quotes the Trope Namer (as she specifies — Uncle Ben, not Spider-Man himself).
