Magna Clades
is a Steven Universe fanfic written by Voltalia concerning the Original Characters Zoisite and Onyx going around, killing people, and the Crystal Gems having to stop them.
This is the very first story to be written in the Gemstone Saga and the first serious Steven Universe fanfic Voltalia ever wrote. First making its debut the day after Christmas in 2013, it is currently one of the most popular stories, if not the most popular, she's ever written during her fanfic career. It pretty much established the universe and characters as they would be represented in future fanfics; for example, Beach City is explicitly said to be in California and the Gems originated from a dimension known as Mineralis.
This fanfic uses the tropes:
- Accidental Murder: Steven unintentionally pushes Zirconia right into Zoisite, killing them.
- Anyone Can Die: Well, anyone who's human can die as Zoisite and Onyx are kind enough to demonstrate.
- Blob Monster: Zoisite first shapeshifts into this in chapter 3 and uses the form to strike at his victims.
- Bloodier and Gorier: At least compared to the source material, the fanfic showcases a lot of gruesome and bloody deaths at the hands of the villains.
- Brain Bleach: Most of the gory scenes (and the rape scene in chapter 8) should have this on standby.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Zoisite and Onyx inflict these on their victims. Onyx blows a woman to smithereens and then graphically tears her boyfriend's neck apart with her telekinesis in the first chapter, while Zoisite shapeshifts into a white blob, starting as early as chapter 3, just so he can liquify people to death!
- Egopolis: The Chalcopyrite Queendom is said to have been named for its very first ruler.
- Establishing Character Moment: The first thing we see Zoisite and Onyx do is kill a random couple who happens to be walking along.
- Evil Chancellor: Zoisite is supposed to be this. Pearl says he may've been responsible for the Queen Jubilee's death.
- Fantastic Racism: Zoisite is prejudiced against humans and wants them all killed because he doesn't believe they deserve to breed with Crystal Gems.
- In fact, he hates Steven for being a "half-breed".
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: The Chalcopyrite Queendom is supposedly based off of the Roman Empire.
- Go Out With A Bang: Zoisite and Zirconia literally die this way.
- Gorn: There's a lot of this in the fanfic.
- Gosh Darn It to Heck!: The only real curse word used throughout the fic is "damn."
- Novelette: The fanfic is sixteen chapters long, but has over 11,000 words.
- Oh, My Gods!: The Gems swear, "Oh my Goddess!" throughout the fanfic.
- Quest for the Rest: First started in chapter 4 and completed in chapter 9. This is actually more of a search for help in defeating Zoisite than anything else.
- Rape as Drama: In chapter 8, Zoisite proceeds to have his way with Connie while Peedee and his parents watch in horror.
- Stress Vomit: Steven throws up after accidentally killing Zoisite and Zirconia.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: By the end of the fanfic, Cinnamon and Onyx have completely vanished from the plot.
