Novelette

Go To

Also spelled novelet. A term for Prose Fiction that takes the form of a very short Novel—even shorter than a Novella. Is defined by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America as any work between 7500 and 17499 words. Due to their brevity, novelettes share many tropes with the Short Story but are long enough to be similar to the Novella in many respects.

Novelettes are short enough that they are rarely published as standalone works. For this reason, their names are usually printed in double-quotes, as with short-stories, rather than italics, as with novels and (some) novellas.

Compare: Novel, Novella, Short Story.
