It All Started with an OSHA Violation
note is a Spooky Month/Friday Night Funkin' Crossover Dark Fic by WokaDokaDee (known as StarberrySpider666 on Wattpad).Pump's father signed him up for a strange experiment, while Skid's mom signed her child up because Skid did not want his friend to be alone. However, things take a turn for the worst when the children take the wrong elevator...

All spoilers for Chapters 1-8 will be unmarked.
It All Started with an OSHA Violation provides examples of:
- Abusive Parents: Downplayed with Pump's parents. They simply don't really pay any attention to him. May be played straighter with his dad, however, since he signed his son up for an experiment in a laboratory that should have been shut down years ago.
- Adaptational Backstory Change: While Monster has always been a Humanoid Abomination in canon, here he Was Once a Man, and only became a monster when he fell down the elevator shaft while wearing his monster costume.
- Adaptational Intelligence: Downplayed with Skid and Pump. In Spooky Month proper, they are both fearless fools whose insane luck is probably the only reason why they're still safe and sound. Here, they're still kids and have some sort of innocence, but they're not stupid enough to not think that Monster wants to eat them.
- Adaptation Personality Change: In Spooky Month proper, Pump and Skid have near-identical personalities. Here, Pump is significantly more timid and reserved that Skid, and he is more apprehensive about the experiment than his friend.
- Ambiguously Absent Parent: Downplayed with Pump's mother, as she is only seen in his deepest desire, with no other indication of her existence in the story.
- Asshole Victim: Pump's father. He willingly signed his own child up in an experiment in a dangerous laboratory, only for him to get killed by a lemon-headed monstrosity in that same lab.
- Becoming the Costume: Played for Horror in both instances.
- While in the elevator, Skid's skeleton costume fuses with his bones, while Pump's head becomes a pumpkin.
- This was Monster's eventual fate once he fell down the elevator shaft. The lemon head of his mascot costume became his actual head.
- Big Bad: Monster.
- Bloodier and Gorier: So much, compared to the source material. Spooky Month is rated T on Newgrounds, and there isn't much blood. This fic goes out of its way to include graphic descriptions of violence, especially later on.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Skid becomes this at the end of Chapter 10. His mind is broken and he shows virtually no remorse when he starts cutting the roof of Pump's mouth open.
- Break the Cutie: Skid and Pump both experience horrific events while they're both in the laboratory. It gets worse once they meet Monster and get separated from each other.
- Darker and Edgier: While Spooky Month has always been based off of Halloween, the horror aspects of the holiday were mostly Played for Laughs. Here, not so much. A prime example of this being a brainwashed Skid mutilating Pump in Chapter 12, slicing the roof of his mouth open.
- Disappeared Dad:
- Just like in canon, Skid's dad is nowhere to be found.
- Double Subverted with Pump's dad. He is alive, but he doesn't really pay attention to his son... Until Chapter 11, when Lila witnesses Monster kill him.
- Eldritch Location: Downplayed with Monster's cave/hideout. In it houses an entire underground "house", complete with a kitchen and a bathroom of all things.
- Free-Range Children: Deconstructed. Skid and Pump find themselves stuck inside of an abandoned laboratory and are therefore free to do whatever they like. However, they are quickly found by a lemon-headed monster who wants to eat them. As the children find themselves in danger time and again, they realize that none of this would have happened if they went inside the right elevator.
- Gratuitous Spanish: There are quite a few instances where Pump speaks Spanish in the fanfic, most notably in Chapter 9. All a reference to his creator.
- Groin Attack: In Chapter 12, Pump delivers one to Skid. Justified, as he was doing it in self defense.
- Hope Spot: Skid may have been driven crazy by Monster, but Pump knew that his friend wouldn't hurt him, even after he cut off the roots that had been bothering Pump for so long... except he did.
- Humanoid Abomination: Monster. He wasn't always one, however.
- Hypnotic Eyes: Pump still has his glowing blue eyes from his and Skid's encounter with the Eyes of the Universe; he even hypnotizes Skid in Chapter 7, albeit accidentally. In the next chapter, he tries to use this to his advantage against Monster, but fails.
- I'm a Humanitarian: Just like in canon, Monster eats humans.
- Jar Potty: In Chapter 6, Skid ends up peeing into the soup in order to stop Monster from eating them.
- Laughing Mad: Skid does this after brutally mutilating Pump. Doubles as Cry Laughing.
- Let Us Never Speak of This Again: In Chapter 11, Monster says this to Lila after she witnesses him killing Pump's father."Keep this between us, else you’ll end up like the orange one’s father," the lemon threatened, "Understood?"
- Morton's Fork: In the story, Skid and Pump change into real versions of their Halloween costumes. The other optionnote is no better, given the laboratory's health and safety violations.
- Named by the Adaptation: Pump's sister is named "Susie" in this story.
- No OSHA Compliance: This fic practically feeds off of this trope. There seems to be no security in the laboratory itself, and the staff that is present doesn't seem to realize that Skid and Pump went down the wrong elevator shaft. In Chapter 11, Lila begins reading an article from three years before the events of the fanfic. The article explains in detail how the lab itself had been declared unsafe due to their faulty elevators. It also mentioned an accident from five years before the article was written, when a college student fell down the elevator shaft and presumably died. The company blamed it on the costume he wore exceeding the elevator's weight limit.
- No Party Like a Donner Party: Part of Skid's brainwashing by Monster involved forcing him to eat a human kidney. Not like he wanted to.
- Remember the New Guy?: A girl named Susie was only mentioned in the last line of Chapter 15. She's soon revealed to be Pump's sister in the next chapter.
- Shout-Out:
- While in the elevator, Skid and Pump see the Eyes of the Universe. It doesn't hear Pump say, "hello", however.
- Two FNF mods are referenced in the Hall of Mirrors in Chapter 4: Friday Night Funkin': Corruption and B-Side Remixes.
- In Chapter 5, Monster mentions the many names he has gone by:
Lemon Demon, Lemon Monster, LD, Neil Cicierega, and just "Monster". Skid eventually settles with "Mr. Lemon", however.
- While in the elevator, Skid and Pump see the Eyes of the Universe
- Terms of Endangerment: Monster calls Skid "Lemondrop", while he calls Pump "Stardrop".
- This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: Done by Pump in Chapter 8:Pump: "Why don't you pick on someone your own size! Bitch!"
- Was Once a Man: Skid and Pump and Monster, as revealed in Chapter 11 after falling down the elevator shaft.
- Wham Line:
- The last lines of Chapter 4, showing us who our Big Bad is:
The mirror to the right seemed to be the most mediocre of the three. It just showed Skid with orange bones & Pump with a white pumpkin…
…& a lime monster behind them?- How did Monster end up in that cavern? In Chapter 11, Lila reads an article about a horrific accident. The victim was a college student wearing a lemon-headed mascot costume.
- The last lines of Chapter 15:
Mister Lemon went into another room & looted Pump’s pockets. He found bandaids, loose change, & an MnM’s packet. He was about to organize the items when he heard a ringtone play. He turned to a basket of phones he had retrieved to try & see who it was from, & saw that Pump’s father’s phone had yet to run out of battery.
Susie was trying to call.
