Fanfic / Fairy May Cry

Go To

Fairy May Cry is a Devil May Cry and Fairy Tail crossover Series Fic-slash-Fusion Fic by Iron117Prime.

After Fairy Tail's battle with the Oración Seis, the guild takes up the risky job of demon hunting. During their job, they come and cross paths with Dante, whose shop was trashed by demons and now joins the guild. And while he may seem to enjoy their new company, more and more threats emerge as magical and demonic forces begin to emerge.

The fic is divided into two parts (so far):

It is currently Iron117Prime's longest series, beginning in March 8, 2015, and the first part concluding on September 3, 2020. Immediately on the same day, Devil's Retribution began publication and is still being written as of January 23, 2024.

WARNING: To avoid too many tags, spoilers for the first story are unmarked in the Devils Retribution folder.

Fairy May Cry

    Tropes A-M
  • Actually Pretty Funny:
    • Carla's opinion of the 'disguises' (purple leaves) that Natsu gets them, finding the whole thing more amusing than annoying.
    • After everyone is surprised when Natsu makes an intelligent suggestion regarding how to handle Devil Hand, he remarks that he does have a brain, prompting Lucy to quip that he doesn't use it that often. Even Natsu laughs at this.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The Devil Hand arc takes place between the canonical Edolas and Tenrou Island arcs.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • The Dorma Anim has a feature that lets it absorb all the magic in Edolas, giving it black armor and greatly amplifying its power in a form called 'Black Heaven'.
    • In canon, Mundus was a legitimately terrifying foe but was ultimately defeated (along with his armies) by Sparda, and later Dante at the end of the first game. Here, it took the combined might of Sparda and many Dragons to push back him and his army (and it's mentioned the main reason they won was by sealing the Underworld), and even with a fraction of his power he was able to deliver a Curb-Stomp Battle on Precht, (later Hades), who in turn outmatched most of Fairy Tails strongest members.
    • After the Edolas arc, Wendy requests training from Modeus, The Apprentice of Sparda, to improve her combat skills, developing much faster than canon. By the time of the S-Class trials, she is capable of holding her own against Gray and Loke at the same time, though she still lost.
    • Kain Hikaru full stop. In canon, he was a joke villain whose status as Made of Iron was Played for Laughs and allowed for the gag of using his own voodoo magic against him. Here, he benefits from Adaptational Intelligence, and using voodoo magic on himself lets him give his body the properties of various materials including steel, diamond, lava, and light. As a result, Lucy and Trish are forced to flee and it takes the likes of Dante and Cana to gain a decisive advantage in a fight.
  • Adaptational Context Change:
    • The Perfect Amulet and the Demon Sword Sparda are mostly independent of one another, whereas in the games the former is required to use the latter.
    • Nelo Angelo, rather than being a Brainwashed and Crazy Vergil, is instead a creation of Mundus from the essence of Sparda, Dante, and Vergil, forming the Demon Emperor a powerful and loyal servant.
    • The events of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening are expanded into separate events rather than the day-long time-span they were in the game. To elaborate:
      • Dante met Lady when Arkham attempted to steal his power, with the latter escaping and the two forming their partnership as in the games.
      • The demon guardians of Temen-ni-gru escaped and were killed by Dante and Vergil over the years, giving both the arsenal they had in 3.
      • The general plot of the game (Arkham working with Vergil and the protagonists ascending Temen-ni-gru) is adapted into a full story arc, with a dark guild of mages assembled by Arkham taking the place of the demon guardians.
    • In canon, Precht apparently went mad after a prolonged study of magic led him to believe that its true nature lay in darkness. Here, it's because his research indicated that Mundus was the source of magic, which led to him confronting the demon king on Mallet Island. After the 'fight', Mundus exposes the wizard to his demonic energy, corrupting him, and instructs him to assemble a guild of dark wizards to find Zeref.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • The reason why Cana couldn't use Fairy Glitter was because she just gained it and is inexperienced with it.
    • The logical reason why it took seven years for Fairy Sphere's effects to be undone, is due to Sparda and Mavis being incorporeal when they helped Fairy Tail cast it.
  • Adaptational Karma: In canon, Cana abandoned Lucy during Grimoire Heart's invasion and more or less suffered the equivalent of a slap on the wrist. Here, Lucy is the only one who forgives her, with Trish decking her in the face and calling her out on abandoning her friend. Makarov is also greatly disappointed, and outputs her on a three-month probationary period, though he also mentions he'll use this time to teach her how to use Fairy Glitter properly.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Zigzagged with Dante. He displays more creativity with his full range of Devil Arms and Styles, frequently using several in combination (e.g. Beowulf and Quicksilver) and in general is The Ace, even amidst Fairy Tail. However unlike his game counterpart, he has yet to defeat Vergil without backup, and it's made clear that Mundus (who he defeated in the first game) is far out of his league (though the latter benefits from Adaptational Badass).
  • Adapted Out: After Vergil decides to deal with Arkham, the latter continues to play dead even after Lady and the others find him, not bothering to try and manipulate her into thinking Vergil was the reason he became evil like he did in 3.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Modeus frequently gives these to Wendy.
  • Alas, Poor Villain:
    • King Faust, especially from the reactions of the citizens and military. Even Mystogan is saddened to see his father killed.
    • Adrian/Beelzebub has an absolutely tragic backstory, having been possessed by the Wendigo, an Extreme Omnivore that eats people, and ends up killing himself to save Elfman and Mirajane, only finding peace in his last few moments.
    • We actually get some from Hades of all people, who was Brainwashed and Crazy by Mundus, with the Demon Emperor being completely uncaring when Zeref kills him. In the sequel, Makarov and Warrod have nothing but pity for him.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Dante acts as this to most of Fairy Tail, with even Erza admitting she's never beaten him in a sparring match.
    • Vergil is this to his brother, having far greater mastery over his demonic powers, with the latter requiring extra help for his victories in each of their encounters.
    • Nelo Angelo is even more feared by the mages of Edolas than Erza Knightwalker, having ended entire guilds by himself. Bringing this up seems to be a Berserk Button for her.
  • And Then What?: In Let's Release Chaos, Vergil gives his usual Might Makes Right speech, stating his plans to rule both the human and demon worlds, while dismissing Fairy Tail's belief in the power of friends and family. In response, Natsu asks what he's even going to do once he's obtained the power he seeks, noting that sitting on a throne all the time would be pretty boring.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Mirajane challenges Lisanna to a fight when she requests to join Dante and the others on a mission to guard a prison transport. Throughout the battle, she is quite harsh on her sister, but it's clear that it's spurred on by the revelation that she is being targeted by the newly formed Devil Hand, and wants to make sure she can adequately protect herself.
  • Apocalypse How: Except for the first arc, the threat of one happens at the climax of each.
    • In the Edolas arc, Nelo Angelo attempted to open a gateway to the Underworld to Edolas, unleashing the legions of demons and Mundus upon the magicless people.
    • The Devil Hand arc has the titular guild raise Temen-ni-gru to unleash the forces of the Underworld on Earthland.
    • In the Tenrou Island arc, Grimoire Heart's goal is to find Zeref, so that he and Mundus can bring about the 'Grand Magic World', in which wizards and demons can do as they like while magicless humans will perish in droves. Turns out to be a lie on Mundus' part, who just wanted them to provoke Zeref into being more active.
  • Arc Villain:
  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • Dante cuts off one of Nelo Angelo's arms during their fight. After receiving power from Mundus, he gets better.
    • He does this again during the fight with Hades, in order to prevent him from using Grimoire Law.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Lahar is incensed at Dante's refusal to come work for the Magic Council and serve the country directly, the latter scathingly asks why he and the Rune Knights waited until after the battle at Temen-ni-gru to come down, which brings the man up short.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
    • Lady's Edolas counterpart wears a dress, detests violence, and has two green eyes instead of heterochromia.
    • During his first encounter with Jester, an annoyed Natsu asks him who he is, what he knows about Devil Hand, and why he's dressed like that.
  • Ascended Extra
    • In Fairy Tail canon, Lisanna Strauss was a textbook case of Out of Focus, even in her debut in the Edolas Arc. Here, she joins the main group from the beginning of said arc. After returning to Earthland, she frequently accompanies Natsu on jobs, participates in the S-Class Trials, and is instrumental in several arcs.
    • Modeus was a one-off character in the Devil May Cry animated series, dying in his debut episode. Here he avoids the events leading to his death and joins Fairy Tail, becoming The Mentor and a father figure to Wendy.
    • Sparda, who's only mentioned in the games, appears in several flashbacks in the story. The Devil Sword Sparda also carries his essence, allowing him to project himself as a spirit like Mavis.
  • Badass Normal: Lady is the only member of the guild without any magical or demonic powers but makes up for it with guns, explosives, more guns, tactics, bigger guns, impeccable aim, and even more guns. It says something that Dante selects her as his partner in the S-Class trial, trusting her skills over other potential candidates' magic.
  • Batman Gambit:
    • While fighting Sugarboy and his softening magic, Gray and Modeus taunt him about using their powers to destroy the Dragon Chain Cannon's key; which is vital for Edolas' plans. In desperation, he attempts to free it from the block of ice Gray had it in... which they were counting on since it adds another magic to the mix and puts more strain on the device.
    • Mundus organized Prechts fall to Hades, and ordered him to assemble Grimoire Heart and 'resurrect' Zeref despite knowing the latter was alive. He knew their actions would force Zeref to take an active role in the world's events and generate more chaos for him to exploit.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Erza Knightwalker hates being told that Nelo Angelo is considered tougher than her.
    • After their duel, Dante becomes one for her as well, growing enraged at the mention of his name.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Each arc has this.
    • Vergil: Both Dante and Natsu are able to beat Vergil and rescue their comrades, and Dante is convinced to stay with the guild, with Lady joining. However, Vergil manages to escape and swears to return.
    • Edolas: Fairy Tail is able to rescue their guildmates and all of Magnolia, avenge Edolas Fairy Tail's master by killing Nelo Angelo, and bring Lisanna back to Earthland, and Mystogan becomes the new king of Edolas, leading the kingdom to a brighter future. Sadly, the Exceeds are forced to leave Edolas, Fairy Tail says goodbye to Mystogan, and Mira and Elfman's Edolas counterparts are forced to let their sister go again. And in the last chapter of the arc, Arkham arrives to set the Devil Hand arc in motion.
    • Devil Hand: Fairy Tail stops the Devil Hand guild, Lady avenges her mother by killing Arkham, Makarov destroys Temen-ni-gru for good with Fairy Law, Vergil is still in Earthland and gains respect for Fairy Tail, with Makarov making sure he never harms his children again. Wendy also makes amends with Sheeree, and Angel/Sorano is redeemed earlier than in canon. Sadly, Adrian dies much to Mira and Elfman's despair, Vergil escapes again, and both Sorano and Sheeree are arrested by the Magic Council to the sadness of their rescuers and friends. Appropriately, the final chapter for the arc is titled "A Bittersweet Aftermath".
    • Tenrou Island: Fairy Tail is able to push back and stop Grimoire Heart, the head of the Baram Alliance, and save every member there. But Zeref decides to be more active in the world, and Acnologia arrives, attempting to destroy the guild. The members of Fairy Tail survive by casting Fairy Sphere with help from Sparda and Mavis, but a glitch causes them to be frozen for seven years, and by the time they return, Fairy Tail is no longer the number one guild.
  • Bizarrchitecture: King Faust's castle has cells in the upper levels, an incredible complex courtyard layout, and contains an in-doors amusement park. Dante even comments that it's weirder than the Demon World.
  • Blatant Lies: Jester tells Fairy Tail that it was Vergil's idea to raise Temen-ni-gru even though it was mainly Arkham who orchestrated it. Given Jester is Arkham in disguise, it was likely done to divert attention from himself.
  • Book Ends: The Devil Hand arc starts with Arkham allying with Vergil to raise Temen-ni-gru and unleash hell upon the world, with the two assembling Devil Hand to aid in the process. The climax has an alliance of Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale, Blue Pegasus, a reformed Angel alongside several members of Devil Hand fighting off the legions of demons unleashed, on top of Makarov destroying it with Fairy Law. Fittingly, the first and second last chapters are titled Dawn of Darkness and Dawn of Light respectively.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase:
  • Bottomless Magazines: Played straight for the most part with Dante, Lady, and Trish, though it is subverted for Lady in the final battle of Edolas when a day of nonstop fighting means Lady no longer has ammo left in her rocket launcher and a very limited amount in her pistols, having to resort to hand-to-hand more often.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Lucky and Marl are two Exceeds who were exiled from Extalia after speaking out against the queen's plan to send one hundred Exceed eggs to Earthland. The two were disillusioned with their queen's 'all-knowing wisdom' though they are not particularly bitter about it by the present, even advising Happy not to seek revenge on their behalf.
    • As per canon, Hades to Makarov upon seeing how far his old teacher has fallen.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Like in canon, all the mages lose their magic upon being transported to Edolas, while Dante and Modeus lose their demonic energy (removing their Healing Factor and reducing their physical prowess). Despite this, the latter two are still Master Swordsmen and Dante retains his Improbable Aiming Skills, allowing him to deliver a Curb-Stomp Battle on a group of guards armed with magical weaponry.
  • Cain and Abel:
    • As per canon, Dante and Vergil.
    • While it was only apparent for a single chapter, Baul and Modeus have a similar relationship, though it is a downplayed case.
  • Combat Breakdown: Erza and Knightwalker's final battle begins with the two pulling out more and more of their respective arsenals, but by the end, both are reduced to hand-to-hand and eventually just slugging each other in the face.
  • Combination Attack: Unison Raids occur at the climax of each arc, between several different characters.
    • A Son of Sparda and a Son of Igneel has one between Natsu and Dante in their respective Super Mode's, called DEVIL DRAGON: CRIMSON INFERNO! It manifests as a blast of red fire in the shape of a dragon that proves capable of finishing Vergil.
    • Checkmate! has one between Dante (in his Devil Trigger) and Wendy called DEVIL DRAGON: CRIMSON SKY BLADE! This involves Dante being propelled in the middle of a tornado Wendy created and proves capable of destroying the Dorma Anim and killing King Faust.
    • Sins Born of Desire has Gray and Juvia use an unnamed one between their water and Ice-Make magic against Mammon's molten gold Golden Meteor. Unknown to them, Ultear helps out with her Arc of Time by weakening Mammon's attack as payback for trapping her.
    • The Flame God and the Holy Devil has a rare example between three mages, Natsu, Lisanna and Wendy called FIRE SKY DRAGON GOD BRILLIANT FLAME (technically four if you count Natsu's use of Zancrows own flames. Natsu uses a variation of his Dragon Slayers Secret Art on Zancrow while amid a flaming tornado created by the girls, sending him off into the horizon.
    • Titania and the Crimson Knight between Dante and Erza, whose respective red and magenta Battle Aura's merge as the two rush forward together in an attack called FAIRY KING: CRIMSON OBERON. This proves capable of overpowering Azuma's own ultimate attack, even after he enters his Super Mode.
    • Acnologia does not have a Unison Raid, but a joint barrage of all the Dragon Slayers and Demons against Acnologia. These include Natsu, Gajeel, Wendy, Trish, Modeus and Dante... It did nothing.
  • Cosmic Motifs:
    • As per canon, Lucy with stars, and her Celestial Spirit magic.
    • Modeus. The author describes him as a moon-type guy, giving him moon-based attacks and the name, "Demon of the Moon".
  • Covert Pervert: After Lucy and Lisanna are stuck in a clothes-swapping machine, Natsu wastes a few minutes swapping out increasingly skimpy outfits on them, and later suggests a plan to use this to distract Hughes.
  • Crossover Relatives:
    • Eva, the human wife of the Demon Sparda and mother to Dante and Vergil, is the older sister of Layla Heartfilia. This also makes Lucy cousins with Dante and Vergil.
    • The Devil Hand Arc reveals that Mirajane, Elfman, and Lisanna are distant relatives of Angel/Sorano and Yukino, all of them being descendants of a mortal priestess that Sparda was forced to sacrifice to seal Temen-ni-gru.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • As is the norm with Dante, most fights he's in usually end with his opponent in a bloody pulp. Just ask Natsu, Gajeel, and Erza after Dante joins the guild.
    • Both Dante and Fairy Tail are on the receiving end of this from the same person: Vergil. The guy dishes them out like candy in his debut arc, especially when he breaks out Devil Trigger whenever it looks like they start giving him anything resembling real trouble. By the end of said arc, the only ones who could truly claim to have given as good as they got would be Devil Trigger Dante and Dragon Force Natsu working together to finally beat him.
    • The fight between Mirajane and Lisanna is completely one-sided in the elder Strauss sister's favor, casually tanking or dodging everything Lisanna throws at her, and almost laying her flat with one punch. Things improve for Lisanna once she first uses Take Over: Dragon Soul.
    • Makarov, Gildarts, and Jura deliver this to the demon hordes from the activated Temen-ni-gru, wiping them out by the hundreds and are barely winded afterwards.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: While the fight between Mirajane and Lisanna is almost completely in favor of the former, once the younger Strauss sibling unlocks Take Over: Dragon Soul she starts to actually clash fairly evenly with her S-Class sister, even matching her darkness magic with flame magic. By the end of it, Lisanna is clearly in worse shape, but she managed to visibly bruise and greatly impress her older sister.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: While Elfman scolds Jet and Droy for their poor performance on a recent mission, Mirajane attempts to come to their defense. 'Attempts' is the keyword.
Mira: Well I think Jet and Droy have grown stronger recently.
Jet/Droy: (hearts in their eyes) Gee, thanks Mira!
    Mira: In their own way.
    Jet/Droy: SAY WHAT?!
  • Dare to Be Badass:
    • Dante recalls a speech his father once gave about how it is the responsibility of those with power to protect those without and repeats it to inspire the Edolas version of Lucy to keep fighting the king.
    • Lisanna actually gives one to herself during her fight with Mirajane, which up until then was a Curb-Stomp Battle in her sister's favor. This also triggers her first use of Take Over: Dragon Soul.
Lisanna: (thoughts) NO! I refuse to be helpless! Natsu, Erza, Grey, Happy,...even Wendy's getting stronger. If they can get stronger, why can't I!? (ring of fire forms around her) I will protect my friends...! I will protect those I love! Even you Natsu. I WON'T BE HELPLESS ANYMORE! (flames engulf her)
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Makarov holds this view, stating that when it comes to power how it is used matters more than its origin as a rebuttal to Hades' rant about how all magic comes from Mundus.
  • Darker and Edgier: The addition of elements from Devil May Cry make it this to Fairy Tail. There's a more realistic amount of blood from wounds, enemies are more dangerous and vicious, with some employing psychological tactics on the protagonists, and while there is still comedy, very few opponents are Played for Laughs.
  • Deal with the Devil: Nelo Angelo namedrops this trope when speaking of Faust's enlistment of him to help overthrow the Exceeds.
  • Death by Adaptation: Rather than facing exile, King Faust is killed by Dante during their fight.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Iblis of the Seven Deadly Sins is helping Vergil and Arkham unleash legions of demons upon the world is to become a 'goddess of magic'. Dante and Happy aren't impressed in the slightest, both having heard this spiel before, the former noting she could have made it big in a legal guild.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Nelo Angelo helps the Magic Suppression Squad in Edolas round up any dark guilds and is their most feared soldier. His true mission is to pave the way for Mundus to conquer Edolas.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Vergil is this for ALL of Fairy Tail. In his debut arc, he easily trounces all of their members, including Dante, Erza, Mirajane, and Natsu, kidnaps some of them, tries to kill Wendy, and gives Natsu a permanent scar on his chest. To note, he is the only individual Natsu is terrified of facing.
    • Nelo Angelo functions as this to the people of Edolas, even more so than Erza Knightwalker, having single-handedly ended several guilds and even killed Edolas Fairy Tail's old guild master. Helps that as a demon, he is the only being there with innate power with the exception of the Exceeds and proved capable of matching Dante even with his full powers.
    • Acnologia as per canon, but it's taken even further here where Modeus reveals that even the Underworld is scared of him, considering he's got power on par with if not surpassing Sparda, with only Mundus himself being the only known Demon that could take him one-on-one.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • Downplayed, since neither are dumb per se, but upon arriving in Edolas, Natsu and Dante just pick a random direction to walk in, pointing out that with their luck they're bound to find something.
    • In the same chapter, Happy bemoans their lack of food, which Modeus agrees with, citing they haven't eaten in the hours since they arrived.
    • Upon seeing Temen-ni-gru rise from the ground, Natsu starts making his way there immediately. When the others question the wisdom of walking to Devil Hand's base of operations (especially given Vergil is their leader) he points out that the tower rising was visible all over the kingdom, including to the rest of Fairy Tail who will likely investigate. As such, going there directly is the fastest way to meet up and deal with the threat. The others lampshade it.
Lucy: That... Is actually... a very good idea...
Happy: Yeah... He's right. Fairy Tail definitely saw that thing come up, so they're gonna want to check it out too.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: As an experiment, Arkham implants a lacrima into Lady. It's not until the Tenrou Island Arc that it takes effect, giving her Steel Devil Slayer Magic, on top of her extensive arsenal of firearms and explosives.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • Suggested by Lisanna to the Edolas Captains when Nelo Angelo's true loyalties are revealed. Subverted since they refuse.
    • During the Devil Hand arc, Upon realizing they were Unwitting Pawns for Arkham, Satan and Mammon help fight back the hordes of demons unleashed by Temen-ni-gru as payback.
    • Just like canon, Vergil joins Dante in the fight against Arkham's One-Winged Angel form, along with Natsu, who is not happy about it. The feeling is mutual and they go back to fighting as soon as the bigger threat is dealt with.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite being demons, the Three Brothers sincerely care for one another, with Fanglor and Raviary being enraged at Natsu for killing Cragnar.
  • Everyone Can See It:
    • After Lisanna returns from Edolas, everybody in Fairy Tail can see the attraction between her and Natsu.
    • Bisca and Alzack like in canon. Even Modeus can see the attraction between the two after being with the guild for nearly a week.
  • Everyone Knew Already: Pretty much all the members of Edolas Fairy Tail figured out that Lisanna wasn't their Lisanna years ago, but felt it was Elfman and Mirajane's place to say.
  • Evil Counterpart: When they land in Edolas and meet that world's version of Fairy Tail, Happy briefly wonders what Dante's counterpart would be like (seeing as Sparda never came to Edolas and didn't marry Eva there, Edolas-Dante doesn't exist), Natsu coldly points out they've already met him: Vergil.
  • Evil Versus Evil: At the climax of the Edolas arc, an empowered Nelo Angelo shows his true colours and battles Faust in the Dorma Anim.
  • Eviler than Thou:
    • Nelo Angelo serves as this to King Faust. While the latter sees no issue with converting innocent people into a power supply and is clearly mad with power, the demon is acting as a herald for Mundus, and plans to unleash him upon Edolas, killing or enslaving everyone there before moving on to Earthland.
    • Vergil of all people finds himself on the receiving end of this from Arkham, who completely lacks anything resembling a Freudian Excuse and has none of his honorable qualities. He even manages to usurp the role of Big Bad at the end of the Devil Hand arc.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Dante, Modeus, Happy, and Carla all realize that as a demon and a Dragon Slayer, Trish and Gajeel would have been unaffected by the Anima as well, yet they never thought to look for them before going to Edolas.
    • Lucy failed to realize that the red pill Mystogan gave her was related to how she could still use magic in Edolas, to Dante's exasperation.
  • Famed In-Story: Dante and Vergil's father, Sparda, is a legendary figure for having nobly defended Earthland for centuries against Mundus's forces. Nearly everyone who knows or learns of his story has the utmost respect for the Dark Knight, more so when it's revealed on Tenrou Island that Sparda was actually a founding member of Fairy Tail.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • Vergil holds a rather dim view of humanity, outright calling them insects, and expresses disgust at his own human blood whenever anyone brings it up. That said, he's not above admitting the power of his human opponents such as Erza, Natsu, and Makarov, the latter of whom he is wary of.
    • Despite being trained by Sparda, Baul refers to humans as lesser beings, showing a low opinion of their strength. It is for this reason that Sparda entrusted his brother Modeus with his gift, despite Baul being the better swordsman.
    • The Exceeds look down on humans, viewing them as lesser beings that they must guide, though the latter comes across as Condescending Compassion at best. They drop it after learning the Awful Truth about their queen.
  • Flaw Exploitation: After Gajeel learns that Satan's powers makes him stronger and bigger with more hits, he goes full Stone Wall with his Iron Dragon Scales, letting his opponent use up the energy he built and tired himself out and managing a Victory by Endurance.
  • Forced to Watch:
  • Friendly Rivalry: No sooner does he join the guild is Dante already on a regular sparring basis with Natsu, Gray, and Gajeel to name a few. But aside from the fights, they're thick as thieves.
  • Generation Xerox: Natsu and Dante quickly become Bash Brothers, and face many powerful foes together. It is eventually revealed that Igneel and Sparda had a similar relationship, having faced Mundus' armies together.
  • Genius Bruiser: Modeus is a Master Swordsman who was trained by Sparda himself and has all the power and skill that entails. He is also very knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics, frequently serving as Mr. Exposition to Fairy Tail, and proves capable of identifying the scope of an enemy's abilities from a brief description.
  • Genre Savvy: Lady scolds Lucy for Tempting Fate at the start of the Edolas Arc.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Dante is a loyal jokester who is (mostly) kind to his friends and willing to be casual even with former enemies. However, he has few qualms with killing or torturing villains when his friends' lives are in danger, even suggesting the latter for Faust.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Natsu intercepts a swing meant for Wendy from Vergil; this leaves him with a permanent diagonal scar across his chest.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Sparda has committed countless acts of justice in his life, much of which has an impact in the present day. He defeated Mundus two millennia ago and sealed off the demon world, was good friends with the dragons and Zeref of all people, and helped found Fairy Tail itself. Sparda would've even been its first guild master, but not wanting Mundus to target it, he instead let Mavis take his place and had his influence scrubbed from the official history.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Mundus is indirectly or directly responsible for the majority of the problems faced throughout the story, being the one who sent demons after Sparda's family (leading to Vergil's Start of Darkness), sending Nelo Angelo to Edolas and engineering Precht's fall to Hades and the founding of Grimoire Heart. It's also revealed that it was him who cursed Zeref with his immortality in this version.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: In the Devil Hand arc, Lucy becomes uncomfortable seeing all of Lisanna's Ship Tease moments with Natsu. While she doesn't understand why at first, she later confirms it during a talk with Trish, though admits she's content with Natsu and Lisanna so long as they are happy together. Lisanna however talk her that she rather wants to share him.
  • Hate Sink:
    • Mundus may very well be the vilest character in the setting, (surpassing his game counterpart in that regard) having a hand in the conflict of every arc and causing misery for many people. Pre-series, he killed Sparda's wife Eva and separated their sons, causing Vergil's Start of Darkness, created Trish to kill Dante (making her look like Eva to twist the knife) and sent Nelo Angelo to Edolas to pave the way for his conquest. He is also responsible for Zeref's curse in this continuity and twisting Precht into Lord Hades, commanding him to build a dark guild (Grimoire Heart) in order to awaken Zeref. Only he used them as Unwitting Pawns to get Zeref to accept his curse and become active again. His last words to Hades' lifeless body is just mocking his loyal servant, showing a complete Lack of Empathy.
    • In Devil May Cry 3, Arkham's already a bastard, but here he is somehow even more despicable. He uses Leviatha/Sheeree and Belzebub/Adrian, both children, to achieve his goals, implants a lacrima into Lady as an experiment, and starts a guild war by kidnapping Fairy Tail members. It's no surprise that every member of Fairy Tail hates his guts, with many even willing to suspend their no-kill rule.
    • Asmodeua, the Seven Sins sin of Lust, is a sadistic psychopath that revels in inflicting physical and mental torture on her victims, having been an unholy mix of Serial Killer and serial rapist before joining Devil Hand. Unlike some of the other Sins who get some sympathy from Fairy Tail (Leviatha/Sheeree and Beelzebub/Adrian because of their tragic pasts, Iblis and Belphegor from their deaths) she is so vile and monstrous that her demise at the hands of Loke, Lisanna, and Lucy is treated as disposing of a demon.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Vergil, the half-demon One-Man Army who dishes out Curb-Stomp Battle's like candy, knows better than to face down Makarov, outright admitting he doubts he can win in a fight. When the latter threatens him if he ever harms his children again, the son of Sparda feels genuine fear for one of the few times in his life.
  • Humans Are Special: Something Sparda believed wholeheartedly, and what seems to have elevated from a typical demon to the Greater-Scope Paragon he is renowned for.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Happy freaks out after hearing Agni and Rudra speak, Modeus points out that he himself is a talking cat.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Lisanna asks Dante if he has any siblings after hearing Cragnar refer to him as the 'youngest' son of Sparda. When he responds he has a twin called Vergil, she asks if he's on another job, unaware of the brothers antagonistic relationship, which he briefly alludes to.
  • It Has Been an Honor: When it looks like they'll be overwhelmed by the sheer number of demons from the activated Temen-ni-gru, the members of Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale, and Blue Pegasus all give some variation of this to one another. Even Mammon and Satan get in on it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Throughout the Edolas arc, Dante is distrustful of Carla and expresses suspicion whenever she reveals new information. While she had no ulterior motives and he was overly hostile when doing so, he was perfectly correct in that she kept too much information to herself, and refusing to share any more than what she deemed necessary was not only suspicious but left them more vulnerable to surprises. After seemingly unknowingly betraying the group she admits Dante was right to be wary.
    • Downplayed, since she's not a jerk, but Mira's refusal to let Lisanna accompany Dante and the others on a job right after Cragnar's attack is understandable if a bit callous. She proposes a fight, refusing to let Lisanna leave unless she can win, and while her criticisms of her own sister's performance are harsh, the fact that she was unable to land any solid hits shows that Lisanna is not ready to face the demons that would be coming after her. She relents after Lisanna breaks out Dragon Soul, and briefly puts her on the back foot.
    • While Lahar is rather unsympathetic to Sheeree's plight and judges her as harshly as the other members of Devil Hand, he makes the valid point that manipulated or not, she still aided the Dark Guild in helping to bring about a potential apocalypse. Such a thing is a serious crime even if she is a minor.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Generally speaking, while most of the various Fairy Tail villains do bring up their own brand of drama and tension to the story, any time a villain from the Devil May Cry world is introduced to the story does it really get to its highest point.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • When faced with the combined might of Nelo Angelo and a small army of Exceeds, the heroes choose to flee, especially since most can't use their magic/demonic powers at the time.
    • When faced with most of the members of Earthland's Fairy Tail (who have had their magic restored), Nelo Angelo cuts his losses and flees, especially since Dante had managed to cut off one of his arms prior.
    • In the Devil Hand arc, Trish, Modeus, Lucy, and Lisanna sit out the fight against Vergil, noting they'd be a liability due to their injuries or lack of power.
    • While Fairy Tail is eager to defeat Grimoire Heart, even Natsu recognizes they're outclassed against Bluenote Stinger, though they are unable to flee until Gildarts arrives.
    • Zigzagged in the 'fight' against Acnologia at the climax of the Tenrou Island arc. While everyone agrees that running away is the best option, they all return to help Makarov fight the Dragon Butcher, not wanting to sacrifice their guild master in a bid to buy time.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Devil slayer magic acts like this to demons, even bypassing hybrids Healing Factor, as Dante found out the hard way.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!:
    • Pretty much every time Dante decides to break out his Devil Trigger.
    • When Cragnar appears to have fatally injured Lisanna, Natsu drops any semblance of enjoying the fight and instantly goes to end him.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition:
    • Loke against Vergil, with the half-demon holding his own against the Celestial Spirit, and defeating him.
    • Makarov vs Shadow Lord Hades, who respectively use a yellow aura and a dark purple aura in their fight. Fittingly, the chapter is called Clash of Light and Darkness.
    • Human-demon hybrid Dante against the Holy Devil Slayer Job, with the latter being a priest that worships Mundus. The fact that the 'priest' wields light magic against Dante'sarsenal of demonic powers furthers the contrast, especially in contrast to their alignments.
    • Mavis with fellow Fairy Tail founding member Sparda.
  • Light Is Not Good: Job is a Holy Devil Slayer whose element is light, using lasers and cross motifs in his attacks. He is also a member of Grimoire Heart, and refers to their plan to merge the human and demon worlds as a 'holy mission'.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Trish and Dante are very close, having known each other well before they joined Fairy Tail, and are willing to give each other plenty of emotional support. However, both agree that they are Just Friends and come across as siblings more than anything.
  • Logical Weakness: After Mammon shows off his Gold Make's super hot liquid form (letting him burn through Gray's Ice Makes), Gray deduces that if it has a melting point, it must have a freezing point as well, giving him an advantage.
  • Loophole Abuse: Discussed. When the Exceeds protest that no human or Fallen is allowed to set foot on Extalia, Trish (a demon) mentally notes that they don't apply to her, to her amusement.
  • Master-Apprentice Chain: Sparda->Modeus->Wendy
  • Metallic Motifs:
    • Gajeel, the Iron Dragon Slayer
    • Lady, after having a lacrima placed in her by Arkham, gains Steel Devil Slayer magic in the Tenrou Island arc.
    • Mammon has Maker magic that allows him to create objects out of gold.
  • Moral Myopia:
    • When Dante and Erza take King Faust hostage to force the Edolas guards to free their friends, the latter calls it a cowardly move. The two fire back that they kidnapped their friends and converted them into the Lacrima, so they have no room to talk.
    • Fanglor and Raviary are enraged at Natsu for killing their brother Cragnar, even though Cragnar attacked him and Lisanna (even critically injuring the latter out of spite), and Natsu gave him a chance to walk away.
    • Leviatha/Sheeree has this for most of the Devil Hand arc, bearing a massive grudge against Wendy, and believing that she deserves every bit of pain she inflicts upon her, showing great glee in doing so, as does Fairy Tail simply for taking her in. Never mind the fact that Leviatha/Sheeree herself is a member of a Dark Guild trying to bring about an Apocalypse How, on top of the atrocities the individual members commit and that every Fairy Tail member she encounters are clearly reluctance to hurt a child like her.
    • Played for Laughs when the Grimoire Heart mooks attacking Natsu and co. become enraged when they realize that the reason he wants to keep attacking them after they're too beat up to continue is to vent about what happened to his scarf, which they had nothing to do with. This is despite the fact that their guild is attacking Fairy Tail's sacred ground in an attempt to kill them all.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sheeree/Leviatha has this after her last fight with Wendy, realizing that she not only tried to kill her friend over something that wasn't her fault but helped bring about the apocalypse in the process.
  • Mythical Motifs: Found throughout the story.
    • Fairy Tail has fairies, with their three most powerful spells being light-based attacks.
      • One of their most prominent members, Erza, is given the title Titania, which is the name of the queen of the fairies, and her Unison Raid with Dante is called Fairy King: Crimson Oberon, as a reference to the king of the fairies.
      • Evergreen plays this to the hilt, wielding a form of magic she outright calls "Fairy Magic" that lets her manifest wings and many of her attack names are based on various fairy myths.
      • The guild's first master, Mavis Vermillion has a fairy-like appearance (appearing as a child) and has been a fan of them since childhood.
    • The Dragon Slayers are all associated with Dragons, with Natsu even having a scarf made out of scales. Lisanna gets this as well after obtaining her Dragon Soul Take Over.
    • Elfman is associated with many beasts, while Lisanna sticks mainly to Animal Motifs until she gets Dragon Soul.
    • Several characters have some related to demons and devils.
    • Lady is loosely associated with them given her occupation as a Devil Hunter. Becomes stronger after she gains Devil Slayer Magic, which is stated to be based off demonic power.
    • Devil Hand as a whole has a demonic motif, with the majority of their ranks being comprised of demons. Even their human members, the Seven Deadly Sins get in on this, being named after several demons or fallen angels.
    • Grimoire Heart is strongly associated with demons and devils given they outright worship Mundus, the emperor of the Underworld. Most strongly seen with their leader Hades, whose armor has plenty of spikes and a horned helmet, on top of enhancing his might with his Devil's Eye and Devil's Heart, which allow him to channel vast amounts of demonic power.
      • Amongst the individual members, Job represents a preacher with his Holy Devil Slayer Magic.
      • Zancrow's magic associates him with more malicious gods with one of his more prominent attacks specifically invoking Kagatsuchi, the Japanese fire god.
    • Lamia Scale: Lamias
    • Blue Pegasus: The Pegasus, a beautiful flying horse that is much more powerful than its appearance would suggest, in line with their member's formidable skill despite their flamboyance. They even have a Cool Airship to let them fly around the country.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Vergil's insult to Natsu about his flames being "unable to roast a marshmallow" is a nod to his victory quote to Ghost Rider in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
    • During their battle atop Temen ni gru, Dante lands a horizontal slice on Vergil while moving past him, which is how he won their climactic duel at the end of Devil May Cry 3. Since both combatants are using their Devil Trigger this time, the fight continues.

    Tropes N-Z
  • Near-Villain Victory: As the Earthland members of Fairy Tail grow increasingly exhausted by the final battle, the Edolas army comes rather close to overwhelming them with sheer numbers. Thankfully, Edolas Fairy Tail shows up in time to help them out.
  • No Body Left Behind:
    • As a result of being caught between a blast from Natsu and Modeus in his Devil Trigger, Nelo Angelo's body is vaporized.
    • Asmodeua is reduced to less than ash after receiving a triple whammy from Loke, Lisanna in her Dragon Soul Take Over, and Lucy's Angel assisted Urano Metoria.
    • At the end of the Devil Hand arc, Arkham's already dead body is disintegrated by Makarovs use of Fairy Law.
  • No-Sell: Yamato manages to do this to Ultear's Arc of Time, to her shock. Vergil notes that its nature as a Devil Arm prevents it from rusting at all.
  • Noble Demon:
    • Vergil has a certain code of honor. If he gives his word to an agreement, he'll hold his end to it. For example, when Adrian/Beelzebub requests that once his part is complete, Vergil will kill him, the human-demon hybrid understands his situation completely and promises it with no strings attached. He is also not above complimenting skilled opponents if they manage to do well against him, simply calling them weaker than him rather than weaklings.
    • Azuma from Grimoire Heart's Eight Kin of Purgatory simply seeks strong opponents, and is willing to do whatever he can to motivate them. This includes keeping any promises he made prior to the fight, restoring the Tenrou Tree (and with it Fairy Tail's magic) after his defeat at Dante and Erza's hands.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Downplayed with Nelo Angelo, who for years was the only person in Edolas to possess any sort of innate power (except for the Exceeds). While still formidable, after the rest of Fairy Tail get their magic back he becomes they fare much better against him, something he is excited for.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: Lucy and Lisanna pose in bikinis to try and distract Hughes. He, completely deadpan, sics some nearby monsters on them.
  • Not So Invincible After All:
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • Mundus transforms Nelo Angelo into the Onyx Reaper, a larger and stronger form, complete with his hands turning into claws, spikes growing out of his shoulders, elbows, head, and chest, large talons on his feet, longer hair, large bat-like wings, his teeth turning into giant jaws, with darker red eyes, and enough power to fight Dorma Amin to a standstill.
    • Beelzebub's Take-Over: Wendigo Soul turns him into a twelve-foot monster with a goat skull and curved horns, powerful and savage enough to fight both Elfman and Mira.
    • Arkham wasn't able to handle all of Sparda's demonic power, turning into a mindless, monstrous blob.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Part of the reason Ultear discreetly helps Gray and Juvia defeat Mammon is because she considers her grudge against Gray to be a higher priority than his current opponent.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • On the anniversary of Lisanna's death, Natsu is uncharacteristically somber and subdued, coldly scolding Grey for drawing on his face in his sleep, and refusing to get into a fight with the latter. What's more, he never raises his voice the whole time.
    • After Lucy asks Happy for some time alone with Natsu, the blue Exceed is worried when she doesn't react with comical anger over his usual 'you liiike him'.
    • Any mention of Vergil is enough to make Natsu deadly serious after their first encounter, with the eldest son of Sparda being the first person he is actually afraid of fighting, especially given the scar Vergil left on his chest. It takes a talk with Gildarts during the Tenrou Island arc to assure him that it's all right to be afraid of such an opponent.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Wendy comes to see Modeus as a father figure, with the latter training Wendy in combat and becoming protective of her if she is threatened.
    • Makarov acts as this to many of the guild members, seeing them as his children. Notably, Dante sees him as a second father, and Lady sees him as one as well, confiding in him about her past with Arkham.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Averted. Being a member of Fairy Tail gives Dante a steady supply of jobs suited to his skill set, and he quickly manages to work off his debt.
  • Personality Powers: Each of Devil Hands Seven Deadly Sins has a magic corresponding to their sin.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: In the aftermath of her fight with Mirajane, Lisanna is ready to keel over from exhaustion. Justified since she spent most of the battle on the losing end and just used a new energy-intensive Take Over for the first time.
  • Pretender Diss: Modeus derides Nelo Angelo's boast of being made of Sparda's essence in their final clash, noting that even with that he still doesn't understand the true source of his teacher's strength.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: There is one for each arc.
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • It's revealed in Edolas that Dante's mother Eva is Lucy's maternal aunt, though they're not sure if the same applies to Earthland. Both Capricorn and Morrison independently confirm it making Lucy cousins with Dante and Vergil.
    • In the Devil Hand arc, it is revealed that the Strauss siblings are distantly related to Angel/Sorano and Yukino by a common ancestor.
  • Rousing Speech: Carla gives one to the Exceeds of Exalia, encouraging them to not simply roll over and die even after their God Guise is revealed, punctuated with a shot from Trish's Luce pistol.
Carla: What's wrong with you?! How can all of you give up so easily!? This is your homeland, isn't it?! Do you seriously need a god or a queen to get anything done?! You've all held into dear life even if it meant resorting to lies! After all that, you're just going to lay down and die!? It's okay if you're weak, but if you all work together, there is no limit to what you can accomplish. Extalia can't disappear! I'VE FINALLY COME HOME! AFTER ALL THIS TIME I CAN'T LET IT BE DESTROYED! (spreads wings) I'M GOING TO SAVE EXTALIA WITH OR WITHOUT YOU!
  • Running Gag:
    • As is usual with Fairy Tail, there's Lucy having to deal with her teammates breaking into her apartment, Elfman's 'real man' talk, Natsu's motion sickness, and Gray's stripping habit.
    • There's also Lady becoming annoyed whenever any of the male characters become too flirty or perverted, usually asking anyone near her if she can kill them.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: The name of the elite members of the Devil Hand handpicked by Arkham himself. Vergil mentions people fitting each one are needed for Temen-ni-gru to rise, replacing the demons that fulfilled the role prior, as he and Dante killed them already.
  • Ship Sinking:
    • Natsu and Lucy do not take off, as the former clearly gets more with Lisanna. Subverted when the two girls talk and decide to share him.
    • Lucy says she has no interest in Loke, especially given her plans with Natsu and Lisanna.
    • Trish says that while she initially had feelings for Dante, she let go after realizing 1) he has his eyes on Lady, and 2) she looks just like his mother.
  • Ship Tease: Given this is a Fairy Tail fic, there's bound to be plenty of this.
    • The most obvious is Natsu having ship-tease with both Lucy and Lisanna, with the two girls agreeing to share Natsu.
    • The Dante/Lady ship also gets a couple of moments, though nothing's official yet, and the latter repeatedly denies it.
    • Same with Gray/Juvia.
    • There are moments of this between Gajeel/Levy later on.
    • Romeo has a crush on Wendy even before the time skip happens.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Lucky and Marl seem receptive to the idea of Happy and Carla being a couple, outright calling her his girlfriend.
    • As everyone from Earthland is leaving Edolas, Mary wishes Lady luck with Dante.
    • Likewise, during the S-Class Trials, Mirajane makes it clear she supports Dante=x=Lady, to the latter's embarrassment.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: In Let's Welcome Chaos, as Vergil is giving one of his usual Might Makes Right speeches while dismissing Fairy Tail's belief the importance of bonds, Dante cuts him off with the below line.
Dante: (scoffs) Bro, if Fairy Tail's so weak, then how come we've totaled your guild and got you on the ropes right now.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Vergil dismisses Happy's condemnation of his motives and the damage his actions with Temen ni gru can cause by entering his Devil Trigger, reminding the Exceed that just why everyone in Fairy Tail fears him.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work:
    • Fairy Tail is unable to simply wait out the battle between Faust and Nelo Angelo as the force of their attacks means that they or innocent civilians could be caught in the crossfire.
    • Likewise when members Edolas Fairy Tail suggest waiting until the battle is over and taking on the exhausted victor, Edolas Lucy and Eva point out they'd simply move onto their next target, i.e., them, straight afterwards anyway.
  • So Proud of You: Lucky and Marl express this after seeing Happy off, proud of the person their son has become.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: With only a couple of months between each other's release, Fairy May Cry bears a lot of similarities and contradictions to Lil Soniq's Fairy of Darkness series. One could note this based on both the first Fairy of Darkness and Fairy May Cry's Vergil arc.
    • FoD is an Isekai story, and (somewhat) focuses on Sonic trying to adapt to the Fairy Tail world. FmC ingrains the Devil May Cry canon into the Fairy Tail universe, so while there are minor changes to DmC, it's all to ensure it melds well in the new environment.
    • The inciting incident of FoD is similar to FmC's. Sonic is forced to leave his old world behind after performing a Heroic Sacrifice to defeat Darkness the Hedgehog, and his attack sends both of them to said world. Dante pretty much experiences something identical to Devil May Cry 3, which is of course a prequel and sets up the environment he is thrust into.
    • The main antagonists of said arcs. Darkness is a Generic Doomsday Villain, existing solely as an antagonist with completely no growth whatsoever. While he does create life, they are merely Mooks with little interesting qualities and one-note dimensions. The reason Sonic is against him is that he merely attacked his world and his friends, so he simply acts to defend the new world against him. On the other hand, Vergil is a canon character written in a way that melds his story with the new world. The first minions he summons, though one-note, are all canonical monsters who also happen to provide hints of future plot developments. The reason Dante is against him is because of their existing family issues. Not to mention that Darkness simply attacks Sonic when they first meet in the Fairy Tail world without consideration of the actual guild, while Vergil attacks Dante and then unleashes a series of Curb-stomp battles onto the Fairy Tail cast, effectively sealing their reasons for hating him.
    • FoD is also told with a Harem Genre style mixed with Dragon Ball Z elements, later adding even more elements from completely different series for the sake of the Rule of Cool. FmC, while spending time recounting prior plot points for both franchises manages to stick with just the two franchises and expands more on the elements of both franchises, all the while maintaining consistency with its elements.
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • After retrieving his half of the Perfect Amulet from Vergil, Dante wonders why Sparda didn't simply hide it in a volcano, preventing anyone from using it to open a door to the Underworld.
    • When trying to obtain transportation across Edolas, Natsu and Dante are all for stealing an airship from the guards. Modeus and Carla point out they can simply sneak on board and act as stowaways.
    • During the fight against Vergil on Temen-ni-gru, it's noted that Beowulf makes Vergil too fast to hit, even in a 3v1 matchup. Natsu suggests simply stealing the weapon from him and passing it on to Dante. While not an easy solution, it still caught Vergil off guard, allowing the plan to work.
  • Story Arc: Much like with Fairy Tail, the story is split into different arcs.
    • The first arc serves as an introduction to the Devil May Cry characters in the Fairy Tail setting, with Dante, Trish, Lady, and Modeus joining the guild, and Vergil being set up as a major threat.
    • The next arc is the Edolas arc, which reintroduces Lisanna and reveals the possibility of Dante and Lucy being related to each other.
    • Following this is the Devil Hand arc, which plays out the events of Devil May Cry 3.
    • The story ends with the Tenrou Island arc.
  • Strange Minds Think A Like: Like Dante, Trish gives a countdown when anticipating certain reactions from people.
  • Summon Magic:
  • Super Mode:
    • The Devil Trigger for Dante, Vergil and, Trish, as well as Modeus's true form.
    • Azuma also has one from absorbing all the magic in the area, giving him magma-like skin, and enough power to fight Dante and Erza.
    • Natsu achieves Dragon Force in the Vergil arc and later the Devil Hand arc. On Tenrou Island he gains Lightning Flame mode.
  • Tempting Fate: At the start of the Edolas arc, Lucy complains that nothing interesting is happening. Lady lampshades it.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Wendy becomes a better fighter under Modeus's tutelage.
    • Lisanna gains a Fire Dragon Take Over form due to Natsu healing a fatal wound with his Dragon Slayer magic.
    • Trish eventually gains her own Devil Trigger form during the Grimoire Heart attack.
    • Lady receives a lacrima from Arkham that gives her Steel Devil Slayer magic, though it doesn't awaken until the Grimoire Heart arc.
  • True Companions: As expected of a Fairy Tail fic, with the guild practically being a family. Special mention to Dante, Lady, and Trish, who were this even before joining.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • The Edolas captains of the Magic Suppression Squad do this repeatedly to the point of being a Fatal Flaw. They simply cannot grasp the fact that Earthland magic grants greater power and versatility than their own and Hughes and Sugarboy believe that they alone can apprehend both Nelo Angelo and a large group of mages with their magic restored. The standout example is Hughes who insists that freaking Dante is nothing to worry about even after the man gave him the start of a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from inside his cell.
    • Nelo Angelo makes it a point not to do this, being consistently wary of the group from Earthlands Fairy Tail, Dante in particular, and encourages his then allies to do the same. Even after finding out they have lost their magic/demonic powers he still opts to take a hostage when the opportunity arises in their fights, rather than prolong it and risk them escaping or turning the tables somehow.
  • Unflinching Walk: Modeus pulls this off against Nelo Angelo after he gains his own Devil Trigger, not breaking stride even as the demon unleashes several attacks.
  • Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object: Knightwalker's Ravelt spear against Erza's Armadura Fairy Armor results in both breaking.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • During Lucy's first 'fight' against Vergil she grows increasingly angry as he cuts down her spirits without mercy. He points out that she is the one sending them all against a clearly superior opponent and that if she truly wants to prevent them from being hurt, she should grow stronger rather than blaming him.
    • Nelo Angelo infiltrates the Edolas army on behalf of Mundus and has not a shred of mercy, but he raises several valid points.
      • His criticisms of the Edolas captain's arrogance and the king's greed are all spot on. In fact, he specifically warns them not to underestimate the Earthland mages, to which they do not listen, and end up paying dearly for it.
      • When fighting the Earthland members of Fairy Tail, he questions why they're even bothering to save Edolas noting it's a Crapsack World full of greedy humans and arrogant Exceeds, something Dante himself brought up at the start. The heroes retort that there are still good people living there, and the rest don't deserve to die.
      • In his duel with Modeus, he says that Faust would have doomed Edolas to magic shortage even without his intervention. Given how canon went, he's perfectly correct.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: King Faust is quite popular within the royal city of Edolas, thanks to constant promises of more supplies of magic Lacrima, as well as keeping how they are made a secret.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Fairy Tail, of course, along with Dante, Lady, and Trish (and Modeus, though he isn't the snarky type). They tease and get into regular fights with each other, but they're family.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Carla questions why Dante never warned them about Vergil before he came knocking on Fairy Tail's doorstep.
    • Dante himself calls Carla out for failing to inform them all about the Anima and withholding further information without explaining why.
    • Edolas Lucy, Eva, and Mary call out their guild mates for trying to sit out of the final battle out of cowardice.
    • Downplayed, but Makarov, Erza and Dante chastise Natsu for failing to mention how badly Cragnar injured Lisanna, as well as his use of healing flames in the aftermath.
  • The Worf Barrage: Modeus's strongest attack fails to do significant damage to Nelo Angelo in his Onyx Reaper form.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • In his debut arc, Vergil proves himself as a force to be reckoned with by taking down all of their members, including Dante, Erza, Natsu, Gajeel, Gray, Mira, and the Thunder Legion.
    • In the Edolas Arc, the first fight with Nelo Angelo sees him easily defeat Loke/Leo, the leader of the Zodiac Spirits, to prove how serious he is.
    • Devil Hand arc: Though a Starter Villain, Cragnar proves himself a Knight of Cerebus, coming close to killing Natsu and Lisanna. Natsu has to resort to using two of his most advanced spells, and in order to save Lisanna from dying, Natsu uses a dangerous healing technique on her. However, Cragnar and his brothers are just small fry compared to Vergil and the Seven Deadly Sins.
    • To show how serious Grimoire Heart is, their scouts are able to critically injure Gajeel. Later on, Job, one of the Eight Kin of Purgatory, is able to defeat Dante and Lady in a fight.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Vergil sends Cragnar to capture a recently returned Lisanna, as he is unsure of her current combat capabilities. If he succeeds, then Vergil and Arkham have one goal out of the way. If he fails, then he'll still have a better idea of the youngest Strauss sibling's current capabilities for his own attempt later.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Iblis (the sin of Pride for Devil Hand) wields Morningstar magic, which has the speed of light magic and the all-consuming nature of darkness magic.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After her fight with her Earthland counterpart, Knightwalker agrees with Dante's assessment that she is a cheap knockoff of Erza. Erza herself disagrees, pointing out the result of their fight was a draw, and assures her she is her own person.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Like in canon, Nabi and Nichiya's praise to Carla for completing her mission of capturing the Dragon Slayers causes her to undergo a Heroic BSoD.

Devil's Retribution

    Tropes A-M
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Apparently, Kyrie learned her Arc of Seraph magic just from reading books in Fortuna's library, and wasn't aware of its true potential until after the Order of the Sword Arc.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Dante mentions that Nell Goldstein took him in after he lost his family, and was the one who taught him how to fight, both with forearms and melee weapons. She also left him a sum of money in her will, which is what he used to set up his shop.
    • There are five Hellgates instead of the three in canon, the extra two being guarded by by the Stygian Worm and Krakken.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Mermaid Heel weren't exactly pushovers in canon but aside from Kagura, they didn't seem to have many notable members. Here they're considered the second strongest guild in Fiore (right after Sabertooth) and their master is the most powerful of the Ten Wizard Saints.
    • Laxus shows early on that he can already access Dragon Force at will, using it to match Dante's Devil Trigger.
    • In Devil May Cry 4 Credo's status as a Master Swordsman was largely an Informed Attribute, with his only onscreen fight being a loss against Nero after his transformation. Here he is a Badass Normal Master Swordsman who is able to give Erza a run for her money and has a Cool Sword with various elemental modes.
    • Nero is a downplayed case at first, but his Devil Bringer displays Energy Absorption powers that his canon counterpart lacks. He also gets the Devil Arms from the Devil May Cry 4 bosses instead of Dante, giving him a much greater arsenal than in canon.
    • Amongst the Neo Oración Seis, half the members gain a Caduto form as a result of undergoing the Ascension Ceremony. Klodoa, in particular, goes from controlling an inanimate body to possessing Gilvers, and proves capable of matching Dante in combat!
  • Adaptational Context Change: The Fairy Tail/Crime Sorcière rescue team ends up separated when they encounter the Wolf Knights like in canon. However, while the canon split was caused by a shockwave from Natsu's attack, here they're separated by Uosuke's magic, with the Knights implementing Divide and Conquer tactics.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: God Serena and the rest of the Wizard Saints appear as early as Chapter 2, as opposed to the final arc like in Fairy Tail canon.
    • During the Eclipse Project there's an indirect mention of Irene Belserion and her dragon parent Belserion, who wouldn't be introduced until the final arc. There's also a mention of Elexion the Lightning Dragon King, who wouldn't be mentioned until 100 Years Quest.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • Yukino's request to Kagura that they "bet their lives" on their fight is initially shot down by the latter, who points out that anyone who kills is instantly disqualified. Yukino then clarifies that she was referring to a life debt the winner would have over the loser, which Kagura decides to accept.
    • Bacchus reveals for his end of the bet with Elfman, to have his sisters 'keep him company for the night', he just meant they join him for a few drinks and nothing more. The only reason he phrased it like that was to rile up his opponent in hopes of getting a better fight, something he apologizes for.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Sorano (Angel of the Oración Seis) has already performed a Heel–Face Turn, joining Crime Sorcière much earlier than she did in canon.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • Unlike canon where she viciously mocked Lucy for 'losing' despite needing her guildmates to cheat, here Flare Corona is remorseful and her internal dialogue makes it clear she actually wants to leave Raven Tail.
    • Bacchus apologizes to Fairy Tail for his bet with Elfman involving Mirajane and Lisanna, something his canon counterpart never did. He also clarifies his request to have them keep him company throughout the night meant exactly that, hanging out with him for a few drinks and nothing nefarious, only phrasing it that way to rile up Elfman for a better fight.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Erigor does not undergo a Heel–Face Turn, and in fact becomes even more sadistic than his past self upon using his Reaper Caduto form.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • Jura is still on the lower end of the scale when compared to the other Wizard Saints, while in canon he overtook all but the oldest members post-time skip. Becomes subverted come the Grand Magic Games, where an updated ranking list reveals he more or less has his canon position, only being lower because of the addition of Madame Kurenai.
    • Likewise, Warrod went from being the fourth strongest to the ninth.
    • Amongst the Order of the Sword, Dan Straight's ability to shrink or enlarge targets can only affect non-living things (except for Devil Arms) since the author felt it made fight scenes too silly.
  • Adapted Out: While Jellal still disguises himself as Mystogan to infiltrate Fiore and investigate, he does not join Fairy Tail team B, and by extension, does not have his canon fight with Jura. The reasoning being that openly fighting in the competition will draw too many eyes and risk having him discovered. Out of universe, it was the only way the author could add Nero to Team Fairy Tail B without breaking The Stations of the Canon.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: This is how Kyrie tends to give Samuel praise when she shows off his intellect, which he bashfully appreciates.
  • And This Is for...: Amid her No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Flare, Lucy punctuates each blow with a declaration of how Raven Tail has hurt members of Fairy Tail.
  • Apocalypse How: The Order of the Sword arc has one brought about by the Infinity Clock, and its Reality Warper powers, especially once they're focused using the Savior. The thing is outright called 'a walking apocalypse'.
  • Arc Villain:
    • Seven Years Gap Arc: No one, though the author has confirmed Sid's return later in the story.
    • Order of the Sword Arc: Sanctus and Midnight/Brain II working together.
    • Grand Magic Games Arc: Vergil and Future Rogue.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • Attempted by Cobra to Modeus, asking if he thinks joining Fairy Tail will make up for killing his brother. It fails as Modeus has long since come to peace with his actions, resolving to honor Baul's memory by moving forward.
    • As Credo justifies the Orders actions as necessary to bring peace and order to the world, Mary simply points to the chaos caused by the Saviour.
Mary: Does that look like peace out there?
    • Mirajane hits Racer with a gentle one after he loses the fight with her and the Thunder Legion, which convinces him he can finally just rest.
Mirajane: But why are you running? What are you running from?
    • Kurenai helps Milliana realize how destructive her desire for revenge against Jellal is by revealing she knows she initially joined Mermaid Heel to gain the strength needed to defeat him and asks if it's as important as the bonds she made in the guild.
  • Ascended Extra: Romeo joins the group on adventures rather than sit back at the guildhall.
  • Badass Boast:
  • Badass Normal: Credo is a normal human without an ounce of magical or demonic power. He's also a Master Swordsman who gave Erza a run for her money even before using his Cool Sword.
  • Bash Brothers: Nero and Natsu quickly form a rapport during their fight with Berial, with the demon calling their teamwork flawless, even comparing it to that of Sparda and Igneel. Further displayed in the fight against Sanctus, being completely in synch.
  • Berserk Button: Sparda and Igneel are massive ones for Berial, to the point that he considers praising them in his presence to be worthy of death.
  • Berserker Tears: The reaction of Samuel, Sugarboy, and Dan as they attack Sanctus after he fatally injures Credo.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Dante has grown more protective of Lucy upon discovering their status as maternal cousins, giving a Death Glare to two insensitive girls and providing emotional support while she works through her grief at her father's death.
    • Nero has this towards Coco, who he's known since childhood and is protective of in a fight.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Order of the Sword has no less than five, from Gray, Juvia, Erza, Lady, and Gildarts one after the other.
  • Bittersweet Ending: At the end of the Order of the Sword Arc, Fairy Tail and the Order of the Sword manage to defeat the Neo-Oración Seis, Natsu and Nero kill Sanctus, Gajeel and Gray kill Agnus, and Lucy and Kyrie are able to destroy the Infinity Clock for good, with Zeref destroying Klodoa. In addition, Nero and Kyrie join Fairy Tail, Sparda's body is recovered and given a proper funeral with a cremation, Byro becomes the Order's new head, and Fairy Tail regains some popularity they lost seven years ago. Sadly, many people die, including Credo and Katja, and it's implied that Zeref is planning something very soon that could spell trouble for Fairy Tail in the future.
  • Boring, but Practical:
    • In contrast to the ruins filled with puzzles and traps the others are held in, one of the pieces of the Infinity Clock is kept underneath a large rock above a gap at the bottom of a lake. As Freed notes, whoever was trying to reach it would have to hold their breath while simultaneously moving the stone against the weight of the entire lake. Fortunately, his Jutsu-Shiki makes sit a simple task for him.
    • During the Battle of Fortuna, the Rune Knights mainly cast barrier magic and created shelters for civilians, rather than fight demons directly. This also means there actually is a safe place for any civilians to stay, and ensures the assorted mages have visible points to defend, making coordination significantly easier.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Lucy uses 'Jackpot' in "Chapter 2".
  • Both Sides Have a Point: After discovering that the Infinity Clock pieces were separated and sealed by Sparda, Lucy wants to search for the rest to honor her father's final request, which Dante disagrees with. She argues that they could be dangerous and that Fairy Tail can learn more about them if they search for the rest, ensuring they are better armed against whatever threat they pose. Dante argues back that Sparda likely sealed them away for a reason, and the mere fact that he didn't destroy them means they were beyond even his ability to deal with, suggesting it may be best to simply trust his father's decision. Fairy Tail decides to search for the rest and it turns out that Dante's concerns were valid.
  • Brain Bleach: As per canon, this is everyone's reaction to Obra donning her swimsuit to join the escalating Fanservice event arising from Mirajane and Jenny's "fight". Dante takes it a step further than the others by shooting himself in the head.
  • Bring It: After Krakken proclaims that Grandeeney was his Archenemy, Wendy proudly proclaims herself to be her daughter, readily inviting his ire.
  • The Butler Did It: The butler turns out to be the one responsible for summoning the demons in Chapter 3 in an attempt to summon a greater demon.
  • Call-Back:
    • Fairy Tail makes several references to their adventure in Edolas when dealing with the Order of the Sword.
    • While giving his account of Zeref's backstory, Sparda mentions that ever since Temen-ni-gru he vowed to never kill an innocent again.
    • Realizing that Sherria is a God Slayer has Wendy and Natsu recall their fight with Zancrow.
  • Cool Sword: Credo's sword, Durandal, has been implanted with several elemental Lacrima, including fire, wind, and ice.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot:
    • Natsu of all people points out that the Order of the Sword could have avoided having to fight Fairy Tail for the Infinity Clock pieces if they had simply told them they were planning to seal them away. To his credit, Nero recognizes this and did try to do so, only for Mary Hughes to escalate the situation. And since Sanctus wanted the clock pieces to be assembled and reawakened, they probably would have come into conflict either way.
    • As Fairy Tail discovers too late, reading 'The Key of the Starry Heavens' backwards triggers a recorded message from Sparda, detailing the Infinity Clocks status as an Artifact of Doom and several of the safeguards meant to hide it. He also explicitly warns against gathering the pieces, which they had already done, to their horror.
  • Covert Pervert:
    • When Michelle mentions Lucy used to make her clothes out of paper, Natsu and Grey join Dante in picturing the girls wearing paper clothes.
    • When Shadow Gear, Modeus, and Panther-Lily find Gajeel training on a mountain, Levy takes a moment to admire his physique while he's shirtless.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The wizards who sealed away the Infinity Clock made many, many, many extensive preparations to ensure that the device would never be unleashed. In addition to locking the individual pieces behind several layers of traps in hidden ruins, an enchantment was placed to prevent anyone with evil intentions from finding them, ensuring no evil wizards could reassemble it. Furthermore, even if it was reassembled, the Body Link magic they cast on both themselves and their descendants meant that the culprits would need to kill them all, a task made even more difficult since said descendants' existence was kept a secret.
  • Critical Status Buff: Essentially Dante's Dreadnaut form, which was unlocked after all the damage he took in his fight with Gilver, lets him No-Sell every attack thrown at him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • The Neo Oración Seis inflicts this upon both the Fairy Tail and Order of the Sword members in their first encounter, leaving everyone heavily injured while barely breaking a sweat themselves.
    • Lucy's fight with Flare Corona is almost completely one-sided, with the latter doing little more than ruining her shoes, and only scores a good hit when she takes Asuka hostage. And unlike canon, Modeus is there and catches on immediately, freeing up Lucy to unleash a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. The only reason she 'lost' is because Raven Tail blatantly cheated, a fact that is clear to everyone watching.
    • In Devils and Dragons Sting and Rogue are treated as chumps by each member of Fairy Tail. After the initial bout, Dante handily takes on both of them in their Super Modes and shrugs off their strongest attacks. And just like canon, Natsu wipes the floor with them in the final stage even with their use of Dragon Force.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: In the final stages of the naval battle, it is clear Minerva more or less has Lucy at her mercy, her magic giving her the obvious advantage in terms of offense and range and having made sure to use it to steal her Keys and whips early on. Despite this, Lucy manages to hang on for a good chunk of the battle, only needing a few extra seconds to run out the clock for extra points and even manages to force a tie when Minerva lets her guard down.
  • Cutting the Knot: After his group gets a piece of the clock, Gajeels suggests he simply eat it (since it's made of metal) to prevent the full device from being reassembled rather than try to hide or seal it away somewhere else. While the others see the logic in this, Modeus points out that the magic in the piece could have severe side effects and they're not even sure if Gajeel could digest it, vetoing the plan.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Erigor is killed by Wendy in their pursuing battle, instead of just being knocked out like what happened in the original filler arc. The author did this because Erigor had no redeeming qualities before or after his appearances in canon, so it was more fitting for the character to die a villain.
    • Katja is killed by Racer instead of being affected by Anti-Link Magic because the author felt Anti-Link Magic and temporal stasis as a whole were convoluted compared to simple murder getting the point across better.
  • Death Equals Redemption: Credo's final actions are to turn against Sanctus in order to stop the madness and save his friends and family. Sadly, he is killed by his former boss for his efforts.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Byro takes apart Principles Zealot and Undying Loyalty. He is absolutely devoted to the church of Zentopia and its cause, having great faith in their leader's judgment, and is willing to give up his life if that ensures their mission's success. The problem is that he expects this same level of devotion from his allies as well, being surprised when they object to being put in the cross-fire from one of his attacks and is willing to treat them as enemies for merely attempting to negotiate with their adversaries and their given orders. The members of Fairy Tail also point out that his willingness to make hard decisions just means he is unwilling to consider alternatives that don't involve bloodshed (with Dante, in particular, pointing out that sacrificing others without their consent is functionally murder) and that his dismissal of emotions is really just a way to avoid feeling guilty. What's more, is that his absolute belief in his leader's judgment means that he ignores blatant evidence that they may not be as benevolent as they appear, and only escalates the confrontation when Fairy Tail offers to talk things out. Overall his dedication to such principles makes him a self-righteous, inflexible, hypocrite unable (or just unwilling) to acknowledge the flaws in his attitude and cause.
  • Deconstruction:
    • Lisanna's return to Earthland was mostly glossed over in canon, beyond joyous reactions from her siblings. Here, it's mentioned that her return has them go about removing the grave set for her, which rather than be a quick and easy process, has several legalities involved that they're still in the process of navigating.
    • In Devils and Dragons, Sting and Rogue use their respective Drive Modes and later Dragon Force as the fight with Fairy Tail ramps up in intensity in the usual Shonen fare of powering up to stronger forms. However Natsu picks up that they've begun to rely too heavily on the power advantage such forms give them, resorting to them the minute fights get tougher and display little in the way of creativity or tactics beyond overwhelming offense, which Vergil tried to warn them about. As such, they've plateaued regarding their training and are easy for more experienced opponents to read.
  • Desecrating the Dead: The Order of the Sword, headed by Sanctus, found Sparda's corpse years ago and had been using it for all sorts of experiments, most notably impregnating a woman with his DNA and reproductive organs, allowing Nero to be born. Everybody in Fairy Tail, especially Sparda's son Dante, is enraged when they learn the news, and Zeref, who was friends with Sparda, states that their actions are beyond forgiveness.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Sanctus and Midnight are both gobsmacked when Natsu manages to enter the Savior, which should only be possible with relatives of Sparda, Anna Heartfilia, and Zeref.
    • Everybody in the audience, and the other guilds, are completely surprised during Nero and Jura's match, due to the former not only having demonic power, and being a newcomer in Fairy Tail, but managing to fight the latter, who is a Wizard Saint, to a draw.
    • Everybody, including the readers, was left completely stunned when it was revealed that Sapphire had been spying on Raven Tail the whole time for Mermaid Heel. Gray even says that he didn't see this coming.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Narrowly averted. Erza concocts a plan to apprehend a group of bandits that has Natsu inside a wagon with the others for the ambush. Fortunately, Lisanna reminds her about his severs motion sickness, and she concedes to having him and Happy observe from above.
    • Discussed in The Eclipse Project. Fairy Tail and their allies note Dartons attempt to have them and Madame Kurenai arrested would draw much more attention from the rest of their respective guilds and likely resulted in the secret he was trying to keep under wraps getting exposed had he succeeded.
  • Do Wrong, Right:
    • Lady dresses down Twilight Ogre not only for harassing Fairy Tail for the money they owe but for not thinking to let them build up enough to be worth taking.
    • After letting themselves get captured, Erza criticizes the demon warden and his guards for being needlessly sadistic and inefficient in how they treat their prisoners. She especially complains about failing to check if she and Dante had any magic power.
  • Dramatic Irony: In Fairies, Demons, and Angels, Lucy and Coco complain about Sparda's tendency to be so cryptic with his involvement, even when it could involve world-ending events. A few chapters later, Fairy Tail discovers that simply reading 'The Key of the Starry Heavens' in reverse triggers a prerecorded message from Sparda warning them of the Infinity Clock and providing plenty of information about how and why it was made, being incredibly forthcoming off all the relevant information. Sadly, by then it was too late.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Gray chastises Patty and Happy for making a crack about vitriolic friendships like between Natsu and him in the presence of Lynn, whose brother was imprisoned for seemingly killing his best friend.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • While the group is searching for the Infinity Clock pieces, Happy questions the wisdom of doing so when they a) don't know what the pieces do, and b) don't even have a plan for what to do with them.
    • Natsu is the one to suggest reading the "Key to the Starry Heavens" book in a different way to try and get new information. This gives Modeus the idea to read it backwards, which triggers Sparda's recording.
    • While everyone else is annoyed when Natsu is happy at the realization that the Neo Oración Seis and Order of the Sword higher-ups are working together, he points out that means they know where to find both, at the latter's base.
  • Eating the Eye Candy:
    • Upon finding Gajeel in the midst of his training, Levy takes a moment to appreciate how he looks shirtless and sweaty.
    • Pretty much the entire audience does this even before all the girls join in on Mirajane and Jenny's "battle".
  • Establishing Character Moment: Nero has one lifted straight out of his debut in Devil May Cry 4, rushing to his girlfriend's performance to keep his promise to her, and being intercepted by a group of demons on the way. The resulting fight displays his combat skills, and shortly after his arrival, he starts to mouth off to Credo, showing his rebellious attitude and apathy towards the Order's religion. The fact that he gives Kyrie a lovely necklace before wishing her a happy birthday (complete with a sincere smile) displays how much he really cares despite his attitude.
  • Everyone Can See It: Romeo's crush on Wendy is quite obvious to everyone who observes him, with his teacher Totomaro catching on shortly after her return. Sheeree also notes it upon their first meeting, and gives him her blessing, albeit with a warning.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Happy refrains from using his catchphrase in the middle of a tender moment between Angelina and Bradley, recognizing the heartfelt moment for what it is and not wanting to ruin it.
    • The knights from the Order of the Sword are hardly pleasant individuals, but even they balk at Mary Hughes' use of Patty as a hostage.
    • Played for Laughs but even Kyrie appears to have some disdain for Dan Straight.
    • Dante is a Handsome Lech who flirts even with enemies, but even he is disgusted that Dan hits on girls who are clearly in relationships and his habit of taking photos of them without their consent.
    • Byro has great disdain for Fairy Tail (initially), calling them 'guild rats', but is disturbed at Imitatia/Michelle betraying them so callously.
    • Casanova Wannabe he may be, Dan Straight is a man of his word and is appalled when Sanctus' true nature is exposed.
  • Evil Is Petty: Discussed. Fairy Tail wonders what Raven Tail (especially Ivan Dreyer) are planning when they join the Grand Magic Games. Makarov believes he's doing so purely to spite Fairy Tail (supported by Nullpudding's actions on the first day) but Sparda and Mavis are doubtful.
  • Exact Words: During Fairy Tails' first encounter with the Order of the Sword, Dante asks Nero what they want with the Clock Piece, and gets pissed when he says he can't tell them. Nero then clarifies that they were simply ordered to retrieve it, and weren't given a reason.
  • Fight Off the Kryptonite: Team Shadow Gear and Modeus find Gajeel doing this type of training, practicing allowing lightning to strike him to build up tolerance.
  • Fights Like a Normal: As a result of his Anti-Magic, Byro has mastered as many forms of combat as he can, primarily using hand-to-hand and his staff.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Kinana's memory loss is brought up in the very first chapter, with her also mentioning she hears a voice calling out to her. This comes into play near the climax of the Order of the Sword arc.
    • The Archbishop of Zentopia has had recurring dreams of the world in flames along with a cackling madman at the start of the Order of the Sword arc.
    • Michelle says one of the things she admires most about Trish is her courage in standing against Mundus, and deciding to carve out her own path. Given her own nature as a puppet brought to life, it makes sense that she'd admire someone with similar origins who determined their own purpose.
    • After absorbing Gloria's power upon her defeat, Trish guesses it was because as a clone, Gloria's lightning was naturally compatible with her own. A few chapters later, Vergil reveals to Sting and Rogue that Devil Arms can be upgraded by killing and absorbing the power of a demon of the same element as the weapon.
  • Forgotten First Meeting:
    • Revealed at the end of the first chapter that Dante and Vergil met Lucy when they were seven, during Sparda and Eva's visit to the Heartfilia mansion. Unfortunately, it was shortly before their mothers' deaths, with the twins likely forgetting after the traumatic event.
    • Subverted with Vergil, who casually refers to Lucy as his younger cousin upon their reunion, revealing that he never forgot.
  • Freudian Excuse: Part of the reason Mary Hughes has such blind loyalty to Sanctus is because he and the Order saved her from enslavement in a dark guild when she was a child, where they abused her physically and emotionally.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • Amongst the Ten Wizard Saints, none of them like God Serena's arrogant attitude, with Makarov being annoyed he hasn't changed in seven years.
    • Dan Straight appears to be this amongst the Order of the Sword, with even Kyrie taking a moment to tell Nero that yes, protecting everyone including Dan.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: The Wish-Demon acts as this, with every confrontation consisting of it fleeing while occasionally spitting acid at its pursuers, to the aggravation of the Strongest Team.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Mary Hughes is envious of Nero's relationship with Kyrie, having a crush on the latter.
  • Hate Sink: Sanctus may very well rival Arkham as one of the most remorseless characters in the story, showing no care for any of the people killed for his plans, including children like Katja. He also reveals that he killed Lucy's father Jude to get his clock piece. When it is revealed to Imitatia, while she is shocked and regretful, he has the gall to say she is just as much to blame as him, despite being an Unwitting Pawn in the act and shows zero hesitation in disposing of her afterwards. When his top enforcer Credo turns against him, he strikes him down without hesitation (mocking him as he does so), and attempts to do the same to the rest of the Order, including Mary, who trusted him completely up to that point. And on top it all off, he was not above using Sparda's corpse for his own plans, showing how little his 'worship' of the man truly went, even expressing confusion as to why he wouldn't use his power or that of the Infinity Clock to forcibly enact change. All of this definitely makes him one of the vilest enemies Fairy Tail has ever faced.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Played with. Apparently, in the time skip, Vergil actually joined a proper guild. The only thing is that guild is Sabertooth.
  • Helicopter Parents: Deconstructed with Mark to his daughter Angelina. He disapproves of her relationship with Bradley, and tries to keep her safe, but does so by locking her in her room and slaps and yells at her when she disobeys. What's more, this dislike of Bradley causes him to suspect him of the recent murders and hire Fairy Tail to kill the man based on very little evidence, which they vocally call him out on.
  • Heroic BSoD: Despite the man being a (literally) soulless monster, Wendy breaks down crying after helping to kill Erigor, as he's the first human she's intentionally killed.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Erza mentions that she is a fan of classic romance novels.
    • After the group's training for the Grand Magic Games, Happy cheerfully notes he may be able to reach Panther-Lily's level. This surprises Carla and Lisanna, unaware that he'd care about that.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • When fighting an Angelo soldier, Romeo uses blue flames, freezing its wings/shield when it blocks the attack, causing it to drop to the ground.
    • Guttman Kubricks 'Rupture' power lets him turn the magical or demonic power of others into explosions, which Juvia exploits by trapping him in her water prison. Since it's her own body changing form, his attempt to escape quite literally blows up in his face.
    • Dagon swallowing Lisanna lets her discover that him and Dagon are actually vulnerable from the inside, and takes full advantage with her Dragon Soul.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • When Lucy objects to bringing Michelle along on a job to subdue some bandits (feeling she isn't ready), Erza teases her about the time she joined Natsu on an S-Class quest despite being completely unqualified.
    • Evergreen remarks that she can't stand cocky women like Mary Hughes. Lampshaded by Elfman.
    • Dante refers to the Tri-Men as "Casanova Wannabe's who flirt with every chick they see". Lucy is quick to pick up on it.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: As Samuel starts to get on Panther-Lily's nerves by repeatedly calling Fairy Tail 'barbarians', the latter kicks him over the horizon.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Discussed. Dante notes that the higher-ups from the Order of the Sword clearly didn't want them and Fairy Tail to cooperate, so the two groups likely would have come into conflict even if Nero had convinced his friends to talk things out.
    • While Dante goes to confront Sabertooth alone after Yukino's expulsion, Minerva still takes Happy hostage in order to get him to leave.
    • While the fight between Fairy Tail and Sabertooth in Devils and Dragons has Dante and Vergil added to the mix, the end still has Natsu send Gajeel on a rail cart and him handily dispatching them in spite of their use of Dragon Force.
  • Innocently Insensitive: A group of archaeologists request that Fairy Tail cease their hunt for the Infinity Clock, unaware that finding them was the final request of Lucy's father (or so she thought). To their credit, they apologize and rescind their request immediately after discovering this.
  • Instant Expert: Mostly an Averted Trope.
    • Lady opts to train with Mirajane to improve her control of her new Devil Slayer Magic, citing that she needs the practice to mitigate the side effects.
    • Natsu is unable to access Lightning-Flame Dragon mode at will yet (though he can still eat lightning). Modeus suggests that his body has yet to adjust to the strain of using two magic's simultaneously and can only suggest standard training for now.
    • Played straight and for laughs. After having the rules explained to him Natsu turns out to be an excellent poker player, helped by the fact that he had a chance to observe some of the best players in action during a recent mission, and his enhanced senses letting him read people very easily.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Origins has Sparda and Mavis tell everyone about Zeref's past and how he is actually a Tragic Villain.
    • In Fangs Bared, Erza's childhood friends learn that she and Fairy Tail are working with Crime Sorcière, including Jellal, to uncover a plot involving an artifact potentially made by Zeref.
  • Interspecies Romance: The love between Angelina (a human) and Bradley (a demon).
  • Irony:
    • In a flashback to when they were kids, Dante acted the part of the monster attacking Lucy, while Vergil was the hero who saved her, a complete 180 to their roles in the present.
    • In Devils and Dragons, Sting dismisses Vergil's warning not to underestimate their opponents by pointing out that the seven years Fairy Tail missed means they've fallen behind in terms of training and experience. By the end of the fight, it becomes apparent that Sting and Rogue have actually grown too complacent in their training from relying too much on their Super Modes, with Natsu's greater experience letting him fight circles around them without even resorting to his own.
  • Jackass Genie: The Wish-Demon masquerades as this, promising people three wishes and refusing to grant any of them, only to show up when someone (jokingly) tells a friend to die and proceeds to fulfill that 'wish', making the victim feel responsible.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • While he's an arrogant Jerkass, and condescending in his assessment, God Serena is spot on when he says that Gran Doma might not be the best choice for running the government if Crime Sorcière can deal with criminals more effectively than the Rune Knights can while simultaneously evading the latter. Even Kurenai admits he's right.
    • Samuel is dismissive when Modeus and Panther-Lily express shock at his apathy towards the Angelo soldiers being empty shells powered by demonic energy, showing no concern as to why the Order of the Sword would create such things. Later, he explains that they are essentially automatons and provide a supply of disposable troops for combating demons, removing the need to put human lives at risk which the two concede is a good idea. However Samuel realizes that if their intended function were that benign then the higher ups of the Order would have told the others, meaning they are likely for something sinister.
    • While Gray is annoyed to have Lyon accompany his team in the hunt for the Infinity Clock piece, the latter correctly points out that he has had seven years to hone his skills above that of his fellow apprentice, and that Fairy Tail needs all the help they can get on this mission, even if he is using the fact to be condescending to Gray. Even Juvia tells Gray that he is right.
    • A group of archaeologists searching for the ruins mentioned in the book 'The Key to the Starry Heavens' all but demand that Fairy Tail not travel there before them, out of fear that they may not be able to examine it themselves. Given Fairy Tails' Destructive Savior tendencies, this fear is not without basis, and they could miss out on valuable research. They do relent after hearing Lucy's personal reasons for wanting to visit though, making the Jerkass part downplayed.
    • Dante is skeptical of Cana's selection of teams for dealing with the Neo Oración Seis, noting that very few of them have much experience fighting together. This is proven valid given only one group successfully holds off their opponent, and the fact that Imitatia was revealed to have tampered with the results to send the worst possible teams to each location.
    • From Sabertooth's perspective (especially Sting), Vergil acts like a hardass who keeps demeaning their abilities despite them being the strongest guild in Fiore and constantly undermines their leader's authority. It's zigzaged in that he's closer to the Token Good Teammate, but his point about their arrogance outweighing their abilities remains valid, especially since it's indicated that same overconfidence has left them neglecting their training, confident they can't be beaten.
  • Last of His Kind: During her meeting with Fairy Tail in Crimson Wrath, Yukino notes that she and Lucy may be the last two Celestial Wizards alive, as the number of Celestial Wizards has dropped in the past few years, and the events of the Order of the Sword arc caused it to drop further.
  • Level Cap: As revealed by Sparda in Fangs Bared, God Slayer magic cannot grow any stronger past a certain point, even if the users themselves do. This was put in place by the gods themselves to ensure wizards' bodies wouldn't break into their respective element from channeling divine power through their very mortal bodies.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition:
    • The fight between Byro and Dante, between a Knight Templar on a holy mission against a half-demon especially when they use Angelo Byro and Devil Trigger, emitting purple light and dark red auras respectively. Happy even notes that it's a battle between a devil and an angel, with those watching actually rooting for the former.
    • Dante has this with his cousin Lucy. Dante is a half-demon and she's a Celestial Spirit wizard. While Dante wears a dark red long jacket, Lucy wears light blue outfits. It's also revealed that the Heartfilla's helped the Dark Knight Sparda for generations with Anna Heartfilia being one of the founders of the Order and Sparda eventually marrying one of her descendants, Eva. This makes sense since the stars, as well as the darkness, are combined in the night.
    • Lucy also has this with her other cousin Vergil, the two both wearing blue with hers being an obviously lighter shade than his.
    • Nero and Kyrie also fit this with darkness and light respectively. Nero wears darker clothing while Kyrie wears a white dress with gold accents. Both have contrasting Mythical Motifs relating to demons and angels respectively, with Nero possessing demonic powers from being an artificial son of Sparda and Kyrie having the Arc of Seraph, which is referred to as the divine magic of angels.
    • As per canon, Sting and Rogue, being a White Dragon Slayer and Shadow Dragon Slayer respectively.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Mavis reveals that Sparda was actually quite the ladies man in his younger years just like Dante, albeit a bit more gentlemanly.
  • Loophole Abuse: Lucy and Michelle want to investigate the Clock Piece the former's father for her in his will, but they're not sure if they can dedicate time to doing so... So they put a request up in the guildhall for the job of investigating it, reasoning that there's no rule against a wizard hiring another wizard.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Caduto refers to a fallen angel, as a reference to the Neo Oración Seis members who underwent the same Ascension ceremony the Order of the Sword use to turn members into 'angels', gaining black wings instead of the typical white.
    • Nero gains an artificial katana named Masayoshi, (which means justice), in place of Yamato. Word of God comments that it acts as a middle ground between Rebellion and Tranquility (the translation for Yamato), reflecting how Nero himself has a combination of Dante and Vergil's traits.
  • Moral Myopia:
    • Mary Hughes is pissed at Trish for shocking her unconscious in their first fight and vows revenge while speaking to Kyrie, ignoring the fact that she instigated the fight and showed great glee using her People Puppet powers to make the woman attack her friends.
    • Samuel calls Fairy Tail a group of barbarians for their insistence on settling things with brute force. Modeus and Panther-Lily point out that the Order of the Sword threw the first punch, and continue to refuse their offers to simply talk things out.
    • Likewise, when talking with Lucy, Coco expresses annoyance at Fairy Tail interfering with their mission. In response, Lucy points out that the Order attacked them first, and started their mission by stealing her father's final memento to her.
    • Played for Laughs in a morbid manner, but Echidna grows increasingly enraged as her opponents kill her children, even though she is using them as projectiles and minions. Gajeel irritably lampshades it.
    • Sabertooth is enraged at both Natsu attacking Minerva, and being docked points from the Naval Battle event while conveniently ignoring it was because Minerva flew off the handle when it was over and loudly threatened to cripple an already heavily injured Lucy, which is clearly against the rules.
    • Sting grows enraged at Dante taunting him over his own guild's philosophy declaring Lector should be killed or tortured despite using that same reasoning to excuse Minerva's No-Holds-Barred Beatdown of Lucy when the latter isn't even a member of their guild. He and Rogue also grow enraged when Dante implies their Dragon parents were weak despite openly bragging about having killed them.
  • My Greatest Failure: Failing to destroy the Infinity Clock is revealed to be this for Sparda. Well, one of them in his mind.
  • Mythical Motifs:
    • The Order of the Sword is heavily associated with Angels, which form the basis for the appearance of their Angelo soldiers and many of their members after undergoing the Ascension ceremony. Not to mention their drive to carry out their mission of protecting the innocent in the name of their 'god' (Sparda).
      • Credo, though it overlaps with devils/demons due to the origins of his powers. Compared to Angelo Byro's angel-like appearance and even compared to the more humanoid appearance of Neo Oración Seis Caduto's, he has a more demonic, yet majestic appearance.
      • Byro, being a devout monk with Undying Loyalty to his leader and equally firm devotion to their holy mission. Becomes more apt after undergoing the Ascension ceremony and gaining an Angelo form with a white and gold design along with three sets of angelic wings.
      • Kyrie arguably fits this better than anyone, being a kind and caring person that wears white and having an Angelic Beauty appearance. What's more, she wields an ancient Lost Magic called Arc of Seraph that's also revered as the magic of the angels (with a focus on healing and barriers) making it a case of Personality Powers as well.
    • The Neo Oración Seis were referred to as the Six Demons in the past, but now have the theme of fallen angels, and are referred to as such by Sanctus. This goes with their new Super Mode from the Ascension ceremony, that is even dubbed 'Caduto' (meaning fallen).
    • Owing to his demonic powers (particularly his Devil Bringer), Nero is associated with devils and demons, just like his older half-brothers Dante and Vergil.
    • Continuing the Dragon Slayer trend, we have Sting and Rogue being connected to a White Dragon and Shadow Dragon respectively. Sapphire deserves mention for being an Azure Dragon Slayer, albeit an artificial one like Laxus.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • When wondering why Nero seems so similar to Dante, Happy suggests that he could be Vergil's son, as per canon. Dante and Gray point out Nero is too old for that to be possible.
    • In a non Devil May Cry example, Dante kills the Stygian Worm the same way War did, right down to making blood gush from beneath the sand.
    • Wendy uses the same line as War after defeating Dagon/Krakken.
    • After Lector mistakes Vergil's fight with a lightning Cerberus for a storm, Sting remarks that Vergil is the only 'storm that is approaching', a reference to his theme from Devil May Cry 5.
    • Mavis reveals that Sparda was quite the ladies' man back in the day, though with a more gentlemanly approach than Dante. This lines up with "DMC5 Before the Nightmare" where Matier stated that Sparda was better at dealing with ladies, as well as better at making excuses than his son Dante.

    Tropes N-Z
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Fairy Tail and the Order of the Swords search for the Infinity Clock pieces results in it being formed and allowing the Neo Oración Seis to swoop in and claim it for themselves. Made worse by the fact that the next chapter reveals said pieces were enchanted so they couldn't be found by anyone searching for them with evil intent, meaning the villains couldn't have set their plans in motion if the heroes had simply left them alone.
    • The Rune Knights sent to guard the Celestial Wizards tragically make little difference, with their arrival actually reminding several Neo Oración Seis members of their mission, causing them to break off from their fights with the various Fairy Tail and Order of the Sword members.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • The Neo Oración Seis delivered one to Dante in their first encounter with the heroes, which was so severe that he took the longest to recover despite his Healing Factor (although, it was noted that Dante was extremely exhausted and almost out of demonic power due to battling Byro and using up the remaining of his demonic power he had left in an attempt to destroy the Infinity Clock).
    • After Flare unsuccessfully attempts to take Asuka hostage, an enraged Lucy summons Cancer to continuously remove her hair while she pummels the Raven Tail member into submission. It can't even be called a fight at that point.
    • After Minerva attempts to use Millianna as a hostage but fails thanks to Nero, Lucia subjects her to possibly the most brutal one yet in the story, entering her Devil Trigger and hitting Minerva with a combination of kicks, punches, and blades of light. By the end of the beating, Minerva is completely covered in cuts and bruises, most of her teeth are knocked out, and nearly every bone in her body is broken.
  • Non-Action Guy: Warren's Telepathy makes him useful for communications and logistics, but he has little to no combat skills. He explicitly states his magic is unable to mentally attack opponents.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: The team sent to fight Dagon and Berial doesn't fall for their trap, and even proceeds to insult them before the demons emerge.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despite claiming to be creating a new world free of the evil and corruption of the current one, it is blatantly clear that Sanctus is doing this for the power it affords him, and clearly expects to be the leader of this new world. What's more, his act of doing questionable things for a noble cause is just that, an act, as he shows no hesitation physically and emotionally harming his own loyal subordinates or killing any who oppose him. At certain points, he even seems to revel in it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • The normally calm and flippant Dante becomes incredibly enraged whenever he sees Gilver, who was responsible for killing Nell Goldstein.
    • During the Naval Battle at the Grand Magic Games, Gray is surprised that Dante isn't ogling the girls in bikinis. Dante responds that with Minerva participating, he is concerned that she'll play dirty, especially against Lucy on account of his prior actions.
  • Parental Substitute: Nell Goldstein acted as one for Dante shortly after he lost his family, finding and taking him in and teaching him how to fight.
  • Personality Powers: By the time of the Grand Magic Games, Dante and Vergil have both obtained a new ability based off their own demonic energy that reflects their current mindset and goal in life.
    • Dante's is his Dreadnaught form, which he unlocked during his battle Gilver out of desperation to protect his friends and avenge Nell Goldstein. The form lets him absorb the power of any attack his opponent throws at him and use it to boost his own, reflecting his desire to protect his new Family of Choice and strike back at those who would harm them, essentially acting as a shield.
    • By contrast, Vergil has manifested Mirage Edge, which combined with his use of Yamato greatly enhances his offensive capabilities, especially regarding his Summoned Swords. In line with how he sees Sabertooth as a means to an end, this lets him barrage foes at a distance and provides another means of attack, reflecting his fixation on obtaining more power and willingness to stay in a borderline hostile environment to do so.
  • Pet the Dog: When Jiemma orders Yukino to strip down before leaving Sabertooth as punishment for her loss, Vergil stops her partway through by placing his coat on her back, and gets the master to back down with an exchange of Death Glare's. Despite Jiemma calling her a disgrace, Vergil's last words to her make it clear he considers her a valued addition to the guild, which she appreciates.
  • Point of Divergence: The Grand Magic Games undergoes some massive changes here:
    • First, due to Fairy Tail not going to the Celestial Spirit World, they're able to do the entire three months of training, making them more skilled than they were in canon. Though they do still get the Second Origin from Ultear in order to better catch up with the other guilds.
    • Instead of five members, the teams in the Games have six members. Dante joins Fairy Tail Team A, Vergil is on Sabertooth, Sho for Lamia Scale, Lucia for Mermaid Heel, and Wally for Quatro Cerberus. In addition, Jenny is with Blue Pegasus from the start, so her commentator role on the first day is given to Bruni. Raven Tail has an original character, Sapphire Caldwell. As for Fairy Tail Team B, Nero takes Jellal's place on the roster, while Cana, who replaced Jellal in canon after Day 2, is on the team from the start.
    • Wally participates in the Hidden Event on Day 1 instead of Nobarly.
    • Thanks to the training she received from Lady and Trish, Lucy completely dominates Flare in their match, and Flare's attempt to take Asuka hostage is quickly foiled thanks to Modeus. Sadly though, Raven Tail still cheats, costing Lucy a victory.
    • Because Jellal is not on Team B, Nero ends up fighting Jura on Day 1. In canon, Jura won due to Ultear and Meredy interfering to keep Jellal's cover intact. Here, the fight ends in a draw since Nero doesn't need to hold back.
    • During the Chariots event, Lucia participates for Mermaid Heel instead of Risley and manages to get first place.
    • Sapphire is revealed to be a double agent spying on Raven Tail for Mermaid Heel. After Raven Tail is disqualified, Sapphire rejoins Mermaid Heel, taking Beth's place on the team.
    • Wendy and Sherria's match in canon was a draw. Here, thanks to the extra training she received from Modeus, and fighting smart, Wendy is able to walk away with a win.
    • While Lucy is still outmatched against Minerva during the Naval Battle, her quick thinking and use of Aquarius leads to both of them being knocked out, causing them to both get first place. However, Minerva attacking Lucy in a fit of rage after the Battle causes her points to be cut in half, giving Fairy Tail first place.
    • At Vergil's request to the King, the two-on-two fights on Day 4 become three-on-three fights. Dante and Vergil are part of the Fairy Tail/Sabertooth match with Natsu, Gajeel, Sting, and Rogue. Jenny fights with Ichiya and Nichiya against Bacchus, Rocker, and Yeager. And due to Sapphire, Lucia, and Kagura all being on the team together, their fight with Lamia Scale's Lyon, Sho, and Yuka ends with a victory, as opposed to the draw result from canon.
    • Because Vergil is the one to take down Jiemma instead of Sting, he becomes Sabertooth's new master, with Dobengal replacing him on the team for the Battle Royale.
    • With Dante joining the mission to rescue Lucy and Yukino, Nero takes his place on Team Fairy Tail for the Battle Royale.
    • The rescue team is bigger here, consisting of Lady, Trish, Modeus, Cana, Kyrie, Sorano, Sheeree, and Jellal.
    • With the addition of extra characters, Lucia and Nero take part in the three-way between Erza, Kagura, and Minerva. As a result, Nero manages to foil Minerva's attempts to take Millianna hostage, and Lucia is the one to take down Minerva and get the points, subjecting her to a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
    • Instead of surrendering to Fairy Tail, Sting fights Juvia in the final round of the Battle Royale, with Juvia coming out on top and winning the entire event for Fairy Tail.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The Order of the Sword are trying to gather the clock pieces to ensure they don't fall into the wrong hands, but rather than simply tell Fairy Tail this, they repeatedly choose to attack them instead, with the exception of Nero.
  • Power Incontinence: Carla's Seer powers are unusable for most of the first two arcs, which she theorizes might be because of all the time they missed.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Discussed. Lady points out to Twilight Ogre that they could have gotten more money from Fairy Tail in the long run by simply waiting till they could pay, rather than regularly harassing their members and wrecking their guildhall, something that diminishes their ability to do jobs and get money to pay them with.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • While happy to meet Michelle Lobster, Dante and Makarov are both suspicious of a new family member for Dante and Lucy popping up out of nowhere and ask Morrison and some other contacts to investigate. Subverted in that everything is on the level, but everyone is relieved to know for sure. Becomes Double Subverted with The Reveal that she is actually Imitatia, who acts as The Mole for the Big Bad Duumvirate throughout the Order of the Sword arc, and that the real Michelle Lobster is being kept in a coma. What's more, the end of the arc confirms that the connection between the Heartfilia's and Lobsters was a fabrication from the start.
    • Sparda keeps many of his exploits under wraps where possible, for fear of Mundus and other power-hungry demons seeking Revenge by Proxy on anyone involved in them. Hence why the existence of the original Order of the Sword was covered up.
  • Quality vs. Quantity: The Fairy Tail Exceeds are surprised when Katja, a Celestial wizard, can summon two spirits at once, something the older and more experienced Lucy cannot do. She explains that her spirits use silver keys, which are less powerful than the gold ones Lucy uses but require less power to summon.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad:
  • Revealing Cover Up: Samuel is unconcerned about the Angelo soldiers being animated armors powered by demonic energy, pointing out that it means they can send disposable troops on missions rather than risk peoples lives. However, he realizes that if the intent behind them were this benevolent then their true nature wouldn't have been kept secret from the other members of the Order.
  • Sanity Has Advantages: Despite his impressive speed, Racer's animalistic mindset makes him easy to anticipate when his opponents get a chance to breathe. Samuel quickly starts to do this during their fight, and it's only when the villain shows some level of coherency that he regains the upper hand.
  • Secret-Keeper: It's revealed that Jude Heartfilia was aware of his relation to Sparda's family, and even leaves a note for Dante revealing this before he dies, but kept it hidden to avoid any of the man's numerous enemies from coming after his family.
  • Self-Made Myth: Capricorn reveals to Lucy that contrary to what Mundus claimed to Hades in the original story, he is not in fact the source of all magic, as he's not even the original ruler of the Underworld. It was just another one of his lies and manipulations.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!:
    • Fairy Tail gets several of these after Byro's attempt at a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, but the biggest one has to go to Lisanna.
Lisanna: This is righteous?! I've heard that whole excuse before too! For two whole years in Edolas, I've seen it myself! Those in power making the weak suffer in the name of some fake righteousness! Any path that takes innocent lives will never lead to the greater good! It creates nothing but a cycle of pain, suffering and hate! And if you're willing to go along with that cycle, what does that say about you?! Every single living thing; human, demon, dragon, Exceed, even animals are all born to follow any path they want! It's the same for us so-called 'guild rats'! We decided to use our power to help people! Yes, it may be a job and we do get paid for it, but we don't do it for the money! We do it to bring happiness! That's how we got to where we are, that's how Fairy Tail's been since our founding! Fairy Tail has fought monsters who've tried to hurt and take away that happiness and freedom before, and we've never backed down! We'll never lose to someone like you! Not now! Not ever!
    • After Byro demeans Dante as a weak, naive child who is unfit to lead the many battles against the darkness of the world, the Son of Sparda stops him cold with the following line.
Dante: Then why am I still standing?
    • In Devils and Dragons Dante cuts through Sting justifying Sabertooth's cruelty towards Lucy on account of her being weak by pointing out Lector could also be considered weak, and by that his own logic the Exceed deserves the same level of cruelty. Sting's subsequent rage underscores his hypocrisy, as Dante nonchalantly lampshades.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift:
    • Dante goes from his outfit in 3 outfit to his one from the first to reflect the Time Skip.
    • Minor, but Lucy begins to wear her canon post-time skip outfit with the addition of Dante's half of the Perfect Amulet while beginning to take on the role of a demon hunter.
    • Vergil wears an outfit based on his reboot counterpart reflecting the changes he has gone through over the time skip.
  • Smug Snake: Amongst the Order Of the Sword knights sent to Fairy Tail, Mary Hughes is the worst, being condescending to Fairy Tail in light of their current reputation and keeps insisting they simply take the clock key by force. She shows great glee using her People Puppet powers to turn opponents against one another and when things go south takes Patty hostage, something even her comrades balk at.
  • Spotting the Thread: While Lady was quick to pick up Sting and Rogue were hiding something about their claims of killing their dragon parents, in Devils and Dragons Natsu and Dante notice other evidence. Specifically, their story doesn't add up since the level of power they've displayed in the fight thus far isn't anywhere near enough to kill a dragon, and Dante notes either the dragons in question were rather weak, or they used an underhanded method to do so.
  • Squick: Everyone's response to seeing Sugarboy's Hound Dogs for the first time.
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • Angelina bemoans her father forbidding her from seeing Bradley and being unable to stand up to him. Carla points out that she is a legal adult, and can simply leave if she wishes.
    • When Dante starts to wonder if Rebellion has any hidden powers, Erza reminds him that they can simply ask Kurenai, who as Sparda's sworn sister, would likely know better than anyone. Dante admits he's so used to dealing with mysteries and cryptic clues that the obvious solution slipped his mind.
  • Story Arc: Continuing from the previous story.
    • The first five chapters are the Time Skip arc, with the Fairy Tail members returning from Tenrou Island adjusting to changes, and introduces Patty Lowell.
    • Following this is the Order of the Sword arc, which features the debut of Nero and Kyrie.
    • Next is the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Stupidest Thing I've Ever Heard: The 'Wish' demon briefly breaks character to declare this in response to Happy asking for a lifetime supply of fish.
  • Summon Magic: Yukino of Sabertooth, like Lucy, wields Celestial Magic, letting her summon Celestial Spirits in a fight.
  • Super Mode:
    • Laxus achieves his own Dragon Force due to training to better harness his magic after being expelled from Fairy Tail.
    • Credo, Agnus, and Byro have their own Angel forms.
    • Nero develops a Battle Aura in the form of a devil manifested from his soul.
    • Midnight, Erigor, and Racer of the Neo-Oración Seis have their own Angel forms called Cadutos.
      • Cobra doesn't get a Caduto form, but rather gains his own Dragon Force.
    • During the fight with Gilver, Dante unlocks his Dreadnaut form, letting him No-Sell everything thrown at him. His fight with Midnight gives his standard Devil Trigger a Next Tier Power-Up, upgrading it from its appearance in 3 to 4.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: He never outright says it, but this seems to be Vergil's opinion as a member of Sabertooth, finding their arrogance in their power and inability to acknowledge others may surpass them to be grating. He outright admits to Dante he sees them as a means to get stronger, and nothing more.
  • Take That!: Trish asks Lucy why she didn't bring Taurus out against Mary Hughes. She responds that his habit of getting Distracted by the Sexy makes him unreliable against female opponents, clearly annoyed at the fact. This is also a nod to the anime, where he tries to flirt with Mary Hughes when summoned.
  • Technician Versus Performer: Just like canon, this sums up the general approach Vergil and Dante have towards their skillsets respectively. Vergil has amassed an impressive arsenal of powerful Devil Arms, has polished his technique with each to achieve great skill in their use, and tends to favor using one at a time while switching over to another to better adapt to different situations. While Dante does train with his equally impressive arsenal, Erza notes his greatest strength lies in his creativity, rapidly switching between weapons even mid-combo and using several weapons and abilities in combination for outside-the-box tactics capable of catching even his more experienced brother off guard. A watching Bruni outright sums up their clash as "a battle of creativity and mastery".
  • That Came Out Wrong: When the Order of the Sword comes looking for Lucy, Mary Hughes demands they give her to them. An amused Happy and Michelle promptly tease her for her 'boldness' in proposing so soon.
  • This Cannot Be!:
    • Samuel, when Panther-Lily and Modeus surpass his calculations, to defeat not only the guardian of the Clock Piece but him as well.
    • Mary Hughes when Mirajane breaks out another demon-based Take Over and delivers a Curb-Stomp Battle to her.
  • This Is Unforgivable!:
    • Everyone's response when they learn Sanctus had Sparda's body desecrated for his own ends, with Fairy Tail being so furious they're willing to make an exception to their no killing rule.
    • In a talk with Lucy, Natsu admits he considers Vergil's prior actions to be this in spite of her hopes of reconciling with her cousin.
  • Token Good Teammate: Nero acts like this to the Order of the Sword group sent to collect the clock piece from Fairy Tail, being the only one willing to talk things out and not being a Jerkass to the guild. Even when things devolve into a battle he makes it clear it's Nothing Personal, that he is Just Following Orders, and shows regret at learning he's taking a keepsake from Lucy's deceased father.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The demon guards running Devil's Prison make one mistake after another when dealing with Dante and Erza. While they do place a magic inhibiting collar on Erza, they fail to take measures against Dante beyond confiscating his sword and guns. Then, they lock the two in the same cell, making it easy for them to work together. Finally, there's their game of 'Tag', in which they let all prisoners out of their cells for the night as entertainment, allowing the two to run roughshod over all the guards and rescue any prisoners.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: The Exceeds each have one: Happy has fish, Carla has tea, Panther-Lily kiwi fruits, and Samuel enjoys mushrooms saluted in butter sauce.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • The Order of the Sword (especially Mary Hughes) expect Fairy Tail to be a bunch of pushovers in their first encounter and are shocked when they find themselves on the losing end of the battle. Justified as their prominent members have only recently returned and the guild's reputation has fallen greatly over the seven years they were missing, though Mary doesn't seem to learn her lesson in any of their subsequent encounters, always being shocked whenever they defeat her.
    • Raven Tail severely underestimates Lucy's capabilities in the Grand Magic Games, being shocked that she learned hand-to-hand and greater skill with her whips, which put Flare decisively on the losing end of their fight.
    • Despite Vergil's warnings, Sting and Rogue go into the three-on-three fight with Fairy Tail expecting to be able to steamroll their opponents and are completely blindsided when they find themselves on the losing side of the fight.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: The writer has confirmed that Nero is not going to be Vergil's son in this series because when Nero appears, he'll be around 17, whereas Dante and Vergil first appear in their 20s, which means Vergil would have to have fathered Nero when he was still a kid. This becomes subverted when Chapter 16, A New Devil Awakens, reveals that Nero was created from the DNA of Sparda's corpse, which the Order of the Sword found and has been keeping. So instead of being Vergil's son and Dante's nephew, Nero is Vergil's and Dante's half-brother.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: A flashback shows Vergil playing alongside Dante and Lucy, and greatly appreciates the Heartfilia couple's gift of a poetry book.
  • Villain Respect: Mary Hughes sincerely praises Freed after he manages to hold his own against Mirajane's exorcised Satan Soul.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Credo serves as this to Erza in their rematch, having the upper hand right until the end of their battle. He even remarks that in the seven years they were gone plenty of people have grown to match or even surpass the missing members of Fairy Tail, and they need to up their game to keep up.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 16, A New Devil Awakens: Agnus reveals that Nero is an artificial devil-human hybrid, created as an experiment by the order when they failed to clone Sparda, who's corpse they have in their possession and have been experimenting with! Oh, and they used Sparda's reproductive DNA, meaning Nero is Dante and Vergil's half-brother.
    • Chapter 25, The Grand Magic Games, can be considered this as unlike in canon, Gildarts actually stays on as the new guild master of Fairy Tail.
    • Chapter 31, Origins, drops some major bombshells. Bruni of the Wizard Saints reveals that he is Igneel's Edolas counterpart, Raven Tail's Sapphire is a Dragon Slayer. And Sparda tells Fairy Tail how Mundus became the ruler of the Underworld and how Zeref was cursed. Amongst the revelations, Fairy Tail learns that Sparda helped create the Etherious to kill Zeref as a last resort in case he couldn't be cured, and he adopted Mavis and Zera as his daughters years ago. And Vergil is revealed to be spying on the Magic Council for the king of Fiore.
    • Chapter 36, Thunder and Sky, has a huge revelation that Sapphire had been a part of Mermaid Heel the whole time, having joined Raven Tail as a double agent for Kurenai.
    • Chapter 40, The Eclipse Project, gives off some huge revelations. In addition to Fairy Tail learning about the three-way war between demons, dragons that sided with humanity, and dragons that stood against humanity, which led to the creation of Dragon Slayer Magic, they also learn how Acnologia used to be a human until he became a dragon himself. Even more shocking is that Acnologia was the one to kill Sparda. The Eclipse Project is also revealed, and Lucy and Yukino are taken into custody with Arcadios. Oh, and Vergil becomes the new guild master of Sabertooth after killing Jiemma.
    • Chapter 48, Mastermind: It turns out that Vergil was aware of the Eclipse Project the whole time, and was working behind the scenes with Future Rogue so they could usurp the project from Hisui. They reveal that they plan on using the Gate to summon an army of dragons to kill Mundus, the Three Demon Kings and Acnologia in one fell swoop, establishing Vergil as the new ruler of the Underworld, and averting Rogue's future of Mundus ruling over Earthland.
  • Wham Shot: Two big ones from Chapter 36. The first comes when Raven Tail prepares to gang up on Laxus in a 6-on-1 fight only for Sapphire to suddenly punch Obra and immobilize him to the shock of everyone. The second one comes seconds later when she shows Mermaid Heel's guild mark on her shoulder, revealing that she was a spy the whole time for Kurenai.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Wally calls out Bacchus for his bet against Elfman, making him apologize to Fairy Tail for it when the day is over. While they are somewhat mollified when Bacchus explains his request to keep him company meant just that and nothing more, they still call him out for making such a statement.
    • Kurenai chastises Kagura for agreeing to Yukino's bet of the winner of their match having the loser bound by a life debt, though she relents when the young woman makes it clear she will bear responsibility and treat the matter with the respect it deserves.
  • The Worf Barrage: Inverted. Masayoshi's Razor Wind proves capable of cutting through Dans shield despite it's Attack Reflector properties, which had been uncontested thus far. Sanctus even notes if it can cut through dimensions, standard magical items aren't much of a defense.
  • Worf Had the Flu:
    • Part of the reason the Neo Oración Seis steamrolled so many of Fairy Tail and the Order of the Sword's strongest members in their first encounter was because the two had just worn each other down and were taken by complete surprise both by the Dark Guilds appearance, and their new abilities.
    • Invoked by Gilver against Dante, who makes sure to slam his Berserk Button whenever they fight, on top of the personal hatred Dante has for him for Nell's death, making him too angry to fight as well as he usually does. The fact that his skillset was made specifically to counter Dante's probably helps.
    • The normally incredibly capable Byro is quickly incapacitated by Gilver as well, in large part due to his conflict with his current orders, and still being rattled by Dante and Fairy Tails words to him. His mental state prevented him from fighting with his usual efficiency.
    • A retroactive example, since Imitatia messed with Cana's predictions, the Fairy Tail teams sent to face the Neo Oración Seis were the worst matchups possible.
  • World's Strongest Woman: Kurenai of Mermaid Heel is ranked first among the Ten Wizard Saints, and is powerful enough that even God Serena is wary of aggravating her.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • Credo to Erza, commending her for lasting longer than anyone else against his Angelo form. Even after losing, he praises her skill.
    • Dan Straight to Dante, acknowledging his skill as being enough to defeat him. He later extends this to Natsu as well.
  • Xanatos Gambit: The hunt for the Infinity Clock pieces. Since they couldn't be found by anyone with malicious intentions, Sanctus and the Neo Oración Seis just needed to wait for Fairy Tail or the members of the Order of the Sword to (unknowingly) find them on their behalf, after which they could just take them all from whoever succeeded.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: It is revealed that this is how the Infinity Clock was created. [[spoiler:Members of the original
Order of the Sword (which was founded by Sparda) attempted to combine Celestial magic and demonic power to create a weapon capable of wiping out all evil. Unfortunately, the result turned out to be too volatile to control, and too durable to destroy, forcing them to disassemble it and seal away the pieces]].
  • You Killed My Father: Lucy shouts this verbatim after learning Sanctus was responsible for Jude's death.
