Alternate Universe Fic in Western Animation.

Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers

Adventure Time

  • Frozen Hearts (Red Witch): This story is set before episode "The Lich" with Simon and Betty having a different background.
  • The Last Human: The earlier chapters were written prior to the begining of the third season, so several things are quite different in this continuity. Among other things, Bubblegum was never aged back up, and Marceline originally looked human before she was vampirized.

Amphibia

  • "The Arcanist Marcy Wu": a multipart (which part deemed a "season") fanfic series by Discet, where the calamity trio ended up in swapped starting locations in Amphibia. The first season is "A Witch in Wartwood" and primarily follows Marcy and her adapting to life in Wartwood. The second season is "An Alchemist Abroad" and follows Marcy and Planters as they venture together beyond the Valley.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

  • The original series:
    • A:TLAR is a full-on AU reboot of the Avatar: The Last Airbender storyline.
    • The fanfiction Embers (Vathara) started initially as a smaller one shot. It deals with what could have happened had Zuko and his Uncle had just slightly differing thoughts after the Siege of the North Pole, with an astounding amount of cultural and historical research put into this retelling.
  • The Legend of Korra
    • Unstable Equilibrium revolves around an alternate universe of where Asami falls for Korra, not Mako. Unfortunately, Asami has one major issue: she's also an Equalist. The story is a fic where Hiroshi was the one that was killed by firebenders, not Yasuko.

Captain Underpants

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers

Danny Phantom

  • The Danny Phantom Fanfic Accident: Month One is pretty much another take on the universe with the same mechanics but different outcomes. It could be considered an AU reboot if you look at it that way.

Disney Animated Canon

  • Pirates Versus Privates takes almost every Disney Animated Canon there is and smashes them together, though it focuses the most on the Sensational Six.

The Dragon Prince

  • The White Mage: An AU fanfiction of The Dragon Prince, which picks up after the canon ending of season three.

Ed, Edd n Eddy

The Fairly OddParents!

  • The All New Fairly OddParents! is a fanfic set in a world where Timmy has a twin sister, Timantha, who shares fairy godparents with her brother, among other things.
  • Burning Black's entire premise rests on the idea that, six weeks after School's Out: The Musical, Timmy Turner died falling from a jungle gym at school. The stories themselves take place four years after Timmy's death in a heavily affected Dimmsdale.
  • Here by Accident, Staying on Purpose is set in an AU where Timmy wrote about having fairy godparents as a child. Timmy and Trixie Tang weren't close friends but they'd sometimes dress up as a girl and a boy together. Years later, they reunite when Trixie visits Timmy's house. Timmy comes out as trans to her and the two start meeting more often.

Gargoyles

Gravity Falls

Gravity Falls has inspired a number of these, some of which have become popular enough to achieve Fan Verse status.

  • Anti Gravity swaps the ages of characters much like Relativity Falls, but this time Wendy and Soos are twelve, Dipper, Mabel, and Pacifica are fifteen, and Stan is the same.
  • The Author of the Journals, Stanley Pines is an AU where Stan is the Author of the Journals instead of his twin, Ford. In the fic, Ford is able to go to West Coast Tech, but he dies in a plane crash. Regret and grief drive Stan to go to Backupsmore University and eventually, he and his girlfriend Carla go to Gravity Falls and he creates the Journals. But it’s also clear that things aren’t as they appear to be...
  • Fight Falls is a darkly-humorous AU where Dipper and Mabel are a pair of scrappy, hot-headed delinquents who beat the crap out of any monster who threatens them or their friends.
  • Gravity Key transplants the action of the show from the Pacific Northwest to the Florida Keys.
  • Gravity Rises swaps most of the personalities and roles of the characters within pairs. Mabel becomes the curious, scientific one (Pine Tree), while Dipper takes on the role of the happy-go-lucky twin (Shooting Star). The two fight against the psychic Pacifica Gleeful (or Pleasure, depending on the version) and rich jerk Gideon Northwest.
  • Human Journals features the three Journals written by Stanford Pines as human (or, at least, humanoid) brothers named Eins, Zwei, and Drei, who either became the Journals by magic or had their contents tattooed onto them by the Author.
  • Monster Falls sees the citizens of Gravity Falls being turned into assorted monsters from folklore and mythology, usually featuring Dipper as a deer-centaur, Mabel as a mermaid, Grunkle Stan as a gargoyle, Soos as a clay homunculus, Wendy as a werewolf, and so on.
  • Relativity Falls swaps the ages and roles of the main cast around: here, young Stanley and Stanford Pines are spending the summer in Gravity Falls with their "Grauntie" Mabel, investigating the supernatural with Maria Ramirez (a young version of Soos' Abuelita) and a teenage version of "Manly Dan" Corduroy. Later, Dipper is revealed as this universe’s Author.
  • Reunion Falls revolves around Dipper and Mabel being separated at birth, and the adventure that ensues when Mabel heads up to Gravity Falls to reunite with Dipper. It also features the Mystery Twins as transgender (Mabel was assigned male at birth and Dipper was assigned female at birth), an increased role in the story for Mabel's friends Candy and Grenda, and Mabel x Pacifica as a couple.
  • Reverse Falls is an AU where Lil' Gideon and Pacifica Southeast are the heroes, with Dipper and Mabel as a pair of Creepy Twins antagonists.
  • Thicc Falls initially started as a simple joke about adult!Pacifica (here having the nickname "Thiccifica") having wide hips, before being developed into an au featuring aged up versions of the other character with similar over-developed bodies. Such as Dipper (nicknamed "Big Dipper"), Mabel (nicknamed "Maboobs"), Wendy ("Chill Corduroy"), Grenda ("Giant Grenda") and Candy ("Kawaii Kandy") as well. He not only later made designs for the Reverse Falls AU as well, but later expanded into it's own universe (appropriately called the Thicc-Verse) with shows like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, The Loud House,Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil and OK KO. Booru here (Warning: NSFW)
  • Transcendence AU is a work that spiraled out of control, based on an event where Dipper fused with Bill's demonic energy and the barriers keeping the weird stuff in Gravity Falls all came down. Now the whole world's like that.

Infinity Train

  • Down And Out: By nature of Simon still being alive, thanks to Grace being able to save him a second time.
  • Infinity Train FANFIC: Because it is the first fic ever written for the series, being written in the almost three year gap between the pilot's release in November 2016 and the show's premiere in August 2019, the entire nature of the train and the meaning of the numbers is different than in canon.
  • Welcome to Infinity takes place in a world where the train doesn't exist. All the show's characters live in the small town of Infinity, Wisconsin (Lake is Tulip's twin, Amelia is a teacher, etc.) and have to come to grips with their fatal flaws the old-fashioned way.

Invader Zim

  • The Discount Smeet is an AU where an adult Dib becomes a space traveller and buys Zim from an intergalactic market, eventually coming to see the smeet as his own child.
  • Until the Rain is a fanfic set in a world where Zim is a bullied smeet who fled to Earth and was found and adopted by an adult Dib. Also, both GIR and Minimoose were created by Professor Membrane, who died some time prior to the story, and Dib is on better terms with his old classmates.

Jackie Chan Adventures

Jem

  • Deception Unveiled is an AU that diverges from Jem during "Glitter and Gold". Jerrica decides to tell her boyfriend Rio that she's Jem.

The Loud House

  • "Ageswap" universes (where ages and birth orders of the Loud siblings been swapped around) are common:
    • Flip the Lid, in which Lincoln finds himself in a world where the birth order of his sisters is reversed.
    • Loud House: A Family Together is one where Lincoln is the eldest Loud sibling at age 20 who ran away from home and went missing for 9 years before finally returning.
  • Mitchell Movie Productions is creating a Fanfic Multiverse where we see the lives of different Loud Kids from alternate realities:
    • Citadel of Loris focuses on a interdimensional citadel full of Lori Clones going about their daily business and forming friendships with their newfound lives as Lori clones.
    • The Luna House Shows an alternate reality where Luna, an only child in this fic, is split into Multiple Lunas with different personalities.
  • There are fics which explore the (now debunked) fan theory involving Lincoln being secretly adopted, such as Thicker Than Blood, which also included Lincoln having a long-lost twin sister, based on his rule 63 counterpart Linka.
    • Finding A Loud played with the idea by, instead of having Lincoln unknowingly adopted by when he was an infant, having him meet the Loud family and get adopted by them about a year before the canon time period. And curiously also giving him a twin sister.
  • And of course, universes where the Loud sisters are instead the Loud brothers are also extremely common. Ones where Lincoln is a girl named Linka are more popular. The fact that theirs a canon episode where Lincoln in his dreams visits a universe where his sisters are gender swapped and briefly a universe where he's gender swapped too probably helped fuel these kinds of fic.
  • Due to the series mainly taking place in 2016 (and all its trappings), many Historical AUs have been made. The most popular ones being set from the 1930s to the 1990s.
  • Fics where the Loud siblings are not related are also popular, due to removing the Squick factor that Loudcest fics usually have.
  • Fanfics that turn the Loud siblings into superheroes, like Archetypal, are also pretty common.
  • The Ace Savvy Extended Universe: Instead of being a fictional comic book character, Ace Savvy is real, and instead of being two kids who read his books, Lincoln and Clyde are Ace and Jack themselves.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • Lunaverse alum GrassAndClouds2 has started his own AU Shared Universe of MLP fics, The Cadanceverse. The premise of this one is that both Celestia and Luna were corrupted, forcing Cadance (a golem created to serve as their intermediary) to use the Elements of Harmony to seal them both away, before taking over Equestria herself.
  • Chains is an MLP AU that actually plays very similar to the MLP canon, but with one major twist that the fanfic has centered around; humans exist and were made a Slave Race by the Equestrians.
  • The Dashverse is based on the simple premise that rather than being in Canterlot on the day that the Mane Six got their cutie marks, Princess Celestia was instead in Cloudsdale, and ended up taking on Rainbow Dash as her student instead of Twilight Sparkle.
  • Equestria Divided is, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic meets Game of Thrones: the strategy game.
  • Greenfire: A universe where Spike was never hatched by Twilight, instead growing up alone in the Everfree Forest. Oh, his name is Greenfire, as well.
  • Harmony's Warriors is a contextual reassignment Crossover fanfic of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Universe to make it more resemble the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's rather expansive, clocking in at five full-length stories (three of which are still in progress), and two anthologies, with even more planned.
  • The premise of Heart of the Forest is that the Mane 6 and a few other characters are different species.
  • The Junior Gala series created by DeviantArt users, Kaemantis and Bizerbit is set in an Alternate Universe. Some of the changes made in the JG 'verse consist of character ages, certain events, etc.
  • Life in Manehattan is another MLP AU fic. This one diverges from canon when the Elements of Harmony are discovered some time before the pilot by Honey Do aka Daring Do and moved to a museum in Manehattan. Because of that, Celestia chooses that city for the Summer Sun Celebration, and it is there that Twilight goes and befriends different ponies to be the bearers of the Elements.
  • The Lunaverse is a Shared Universe of MLP:FiM fanfics, where Princess Celestia became evil instead of Luna, with a new set of main characters based on background and side characters while the original main cast is flipped into minor roles.
  • Night's Favored Child diverges from canon during the battle between Celestia and Nightmare Moon a thousand years ago. In this fic's universe, Nightmare Moon won, brought about eternal night (and found a way to avert the negative aspects of it), erased Celestia from the history books, and turned Equestria into her personal empire.
  • The Powers of Harmony borders on being an outright Alternate Continuity — aside from the Mane Cast having met and befriended Zecora, everything after the series pilot is ignored in favor of the story's timeline and take on events. That said, elements of canon (characters, backstories, events) are incorporated or alluded to when necessary.
  • The Rock Farmer's Daughters takes place in a universe where Pinkie missed the Rainboom (and a different mare is the Element of Laughter, though it's never mentioned), its main focus being how it'd affect Cheese Sandwich and his destiny, ultimately leading to him working on the Pie Rock Farm and getting to know the Pie Family.
  • The Song of Seven Is a completely separate universe from Equestria and features its own continent, Cabalos. The three pony tribes have their own nations, and two alicorns ruled over each nation. The Alicorn rulers of the Unicorn Nation vaguely line up with Celestia and Luna. The story focuses on a team of six ponies, two from each tribe, as they search for the seventh alicorn. Two of the main characters, Lightning Dust and Applebloom, share their names with characters from G4.
  • Stallions of Harmony Verse re-imagines the pilot where Blueblood and Shining Armor were both sent to Ponyville instead of Twilight for the Summer Sun Celebration.
  • The Story of Twilight Glow: Twilight Sparkle was instead born an Earth Pony. As a result, Moondancer became the Element of Harmony, and she fails to stop Nightmare Moon, allowing her to take power.
  • This Platinum Crown is a notable example, with somewhat darker reimaginings of episodes, badass battle couples, while keeping the main themes of the show, while keeping the main theme of the show- Friendship is Magic.
  • Twilight Sparkle of the Royal Guard is an AU where Shining Armor encourages Twilight to join the Royal Guard.
  • Warren Hutch (author of Windfall and Earth and Sky) wrote The White Mare, which takes place in an Equestria where Princess Celestia went into self-imposed exile after banishing Nightmare Moon. She subsequently became Shrouded in Myth, her only real friend a certain yellow-and-pink pegasus... This means that, among other things, modern Equestria is a republic, there is no Ponyvillenote , and the Mane Six are different in many ways (Fluttershy is more assertive, Rarity is a gem prospector, and Applejack is a travelling seed-and-flower salespony with a Manehattan accent) though ultimately recognizable as themselves.

Nicktoons

  • This Is Home and its sequel The Ties That Bind are two Nicktoons fics where many of the Nicktoons characters live together at a foster house, with human versions of Cosmo and Wanda being the parents.

The Owl House

  • The Luz Clawthorne Saga depicts what would happen if Eda adopted Luz as a baby and she grew up in the Boiling Isles.

Rick and Morty

  • Time Resetting Relationships And Other Shenanigans: In the ending of the "The Vat of Acid Episode" it is revealed that the reality of the events of the episodes was not Rick and Morty reality because Rick did not want to use their home reality to teach Morty a lesson. In this story, the events of the episode take place in Rick and Morty's home reality, allowing Morty to reconnect with his girlfriend, who he met in this episode.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

  • Cat-Ra is a fanfic where Catra discovers the sword and becomes She-Ra, joining the Rebellion while Adora remains with the Horde.

The Simpsons

  • Lisa Fitzgerald is set in a world where Lisa is not the daughter of Homer and Marge.
  • The Thompsons has the idea of "What if Homer and Marge were not the parents of Bart, Lisa and Maggie?"

Star vs. the Forces of Evil

  • Janna vs. the Forces of Evil has the Magic Book of Spells come to Earth by itself, with Star having mysteriously disappeared when Toffee (inhabiting Ludo's body) took control of Mewni. Janna finds the book in a dumpster and learns how to wield actual magic, quickly proving to have a natural talent for it. She and Marco start hanging out because he's worried about such a powerful tome being in the hands of Janna of all people, but they soon become best friends who find themselves dragged into the ongoing conflict against Toffee and the search for Star.
  • The Royal Protector has Star sent to St. Olga's instead of being sent to Earth, developing a Split Personality due to the abuse and brainwashing at the boarding school, and escaping two years later during an assassination attempt by Toffee's minions. Meanwhile, Marco became close friends with Janna and Oscar, as he was assigned to be a student mentor to them instead. Star and Marco end up meeting due to the former using a Summon Everyman Hero spell to save herself from the aforementioned assassins.

Steven Universe

Teen Titans (2003)

  • Northern Star" and "Apprentice" are two examples of the Apprentice AU theme that is popular amongst TT fanfiction - the idea of "What if Robin had stayed as Slade's apprentice?"
  • Jewel of Darkness, fic that is built on the premise that Raven was banished from Azarath when her powers first awakened as child, rather than later in her life. She is then found on the streets by Slade, who raises her as his child and apprentice.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Thomas & Friends

Total Drama

  • Big Brother Blues: In this story, Alejandro never gets singed by the volcano and thrown into a robot suit for two years, and participates on The Ridonculous Race with his sister.
  • Cast Swap explores how the series would be different if the Pahkitew Island contestants instead debuted in Revenge of the Island and vice versa.
  • Change of Plans: Instead of flirting with Tyler in "The Ex-Files", Courtney decides the better move is flirting with Cody. Things only branch off more from there.
  • A Codette World Tour: In this story's universe, Bridgette and Geoff's relationship never recovered after Geoff started becoming a jerk on Action, resulting in their breakup before Total Drama World Tour. The team rosters are also different due to a couple of small changes in the setup.
  • Courtney's Crusade for Redemption: As the description says, Courtney travels back to her younger All-Stars body to compete again and try to Set Right What Once Went Wrong.
  • The Doctor Will See You Now: As the summary says, this story branches off from the official continuity of Total Drama World Tour after the episode “I See London…” Everything that happened in that episode and before in the season still occurred, but there are subtle differences between this story and the official canon in certain areas moving beyond it. Courtney isn’t instantly suspicious of Gwen attempting to take Duncan from her. Gwen attempts to (weakly) defend her actions in her confessional where she expresses guilt over betraying Courtney’s trust. And the Goth attempts to end the budding relationship with Duncan until the season is over and he officially breaks up with Courtney.
  • In From Surfboards to Diapers, the events of Action and World Tour never occur, so the 22 contestants all return to their ordinary lives after Island ends (well, most of them do; Bridgette, not so much).
  • Kingdom Hearts: Cody's Story: Total Drama World Tour never occurs in this story's continuity, and instead, the 22 contestants leave Total Drama behind for good following the end of Total Drama Action.
  • Legacy (Total Drama) answers the question of how Total Drama and the lives of its contestants would have turned out if Gwen was killed by the serial killer in "Hook, Line, and Screamer".
  • The Legend of Total Drama Island: The story is a reimagining of Total Drama's first season, so perforce none of the show's canon events are directly acknowledged.
  • Love Ain't Easy, It's Ezzy: This fic gives us an idea of what might have happened if nothing came of Courtney's gripes about not being in the second season and how far Justin's manipulations could take him in the show without Courtney suing her way on.
  • Monster Chronicles: This series is story branches off from both Total Drama World Tour and Total Drama All-Stars. In Total Drama World Tour in this story's universe, Duncan and Gwen kissing behind Courtney back has unexpected consequences when a supernatural serial killer, Cedric von Túfeice takes over Cody's body. Now the contestants are now in more danger than ever before, with a serial killer joining the game and threatening their lives. In Total Drama All-Stars in this story's universe, Total Drama All-Stars take place two years after Total Drama World Tour. 16 more contestants have been added and they are now competing for a prize of 1 billion dollars. Other changes from the events caused by the previous story are shown with Duncan and Gwen broken up, but deciding to remind friends, Cody and Duncan becoming friends, Lindsay not being in this season because of her having a baby with Tyler, and Mal being more dangerous because of his connection to Cedric von Túfeice
  • Random Drama Series: The series is what the canon series could've been like if everyone's debut season was switched around as well as adding a few Original Characters.
  • Second Chance at Love: Unique for the author’s stories, this one takes place in an alternate continuity from the show. Mostly this is shown in the events of World Tour, but many of the bits referring to Action also tell of different events. The biggest changes to the overall seasons are Harold beating Duncan at the finale of Action, and Heather winning after beating Alejandro during World Tour’s finale. The greater differences lie in which couples formed in this version of events. Outside of Gwen/Duncan (which is ended by the story’s end), none of the official canon couples are present. By the time the story begins, the couples are: Harold/Heather, Tyler/Eva, Noah/Bridgette, Geoff/Izzy, DJ/Courtney, Justin/Katie, Owen/Sadie, Ezekiel/Beth, and the Love Triangle of Lindsay/Cody/Leshawna. By the end of the story, its implied Gwen will hook up with Trent.
  • A TDA Love Triangle with Betty, Cody, and Gwenny: Basically showing how Season 2 would be if Geoff's corruption wasn't stopped; the story also focuses on the off-screen action, with the characters that didn't compete or were eliminated already.
  • Three Tests of Valor: A story set during the 'Island' season, with Lindsay and Harold falling in love with each other instead of with Tyler and Leshawna, respectively.
  • Total Drama Action: All-In: In this fic's continuity, events during the first season special result in all 22 contestants having to participate in the second season rather just 14 (later 15) of them.
  • Total Drama All Mixed Up: Island: Like other fics, the cast is swapped into different seasons.
  • Total Drama Big Bang Theory: Imagine the cast of the Total Drama series in the world of The Big Bang Theory. That's pretty much what this fanfic is about.
  • Total Drama: Cody's Redemption: The description says it all. Cody travels back to his sixteen-year-old body and competes for a second time on Total Drama Island. Because of his knowledge of the whole season, he’ll be changing things up from what originally happened into a new timeline.
  • Total Drama Redemption: Noah finds himself transported to an alternate timeline where he is given the opportunity to redeem himself for his actions. At first the differences are subtle, but by the time of World Tour, they're massive.
  • Total Drama Redux 52: What if the Island, Revenge of the Island, and Pahkitew contestants competed on the first season.
  • Total Drama What If Series: The Revenge Of The Island and Pahkitew Island cast are switched to the first season.
  • Total Shuffled Island Series The series is what the canon series could've been like if everyone's debut season was switched around.
  • Total Drama Underdogs demonstrates how Island might have been like if Ezekiel never said his sexist comments out loud and thus did not become the first eliminated on the show.
  • Twinning With a Twist: The fic is essentially a retelling of Pahkitew Island, but Sammy and Amy are on opposing teams. It makes a bigger difference than one might think. For example, as opposed to Jasmine being her Only Friend as in canon, Sammy now also finds support in Ella, Sky, Beardo, and Shawn (sort of, though he's coming around).
  • Unbreakable Red Silken Thread In this story, Total Drama ended after the third season. Cody and Heather go to the same high school. After a few months they start a relationship. When they graduated from high school, they go to college where they meet people who were in Total Drama: Revenge Of The Island and Total Drama Pahkitew Island in canon, as well as Kitty and Emma from Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race showing up later.

Transformers

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012)

Voltron: Legendary Defender

  • Voltron: Duality is an AU where Matt was the one to crash land on Earth instead of Shiro.

Wander over Yonder

  • The Prince Peepers AU is exactly that - a AU where Peepers is the prince of the first planet Lord Hater tries to conquer, and marries Hater so that the latter can claim the former's planet for his own.

Young Justice (2010)

  • From Young Justice, written during the hiatus, Young Justice: Darkness Falls, which starts the hour after the 2nd season ends, and makes a major divergence compared to how canon ended up due to lack of foresight.
    • Similarly, Young Justice Titans, which brings the Young Justice spin on the mystic to the forefront with the Arc Villain this season being Trigon The Terrible.
