Hey, guys, where would I put a theory about how Chibitalia seems to be able to break the rules of reality and transcend time and space, in the WMG? I mean, I'm really, really bad at categorizing things so, a bit of clarification would be nice.
That is, I don't know if it would go in the "Axis Character" section (due to Chibitalia being, well, chibi!Italy) or, somewhere else, for some other reason...

I noticed that the links to Veoh and the scanlation archive have been deleted for possibly being illegal.
I don't really care about the Veoh link since there are plenty of other sites to watch the anime, but I think that the scanlation site is safe to link to. There are a lot of things there that are not available in the published volumes: all of the holiday events, the Birz comics, the webcomics that were never included in any of the published manga.
Gentosha never made Himaruya take down the comics that were published, and I never saw any sign that Tokyo Pop had a problem with the scanlations existing. I think if someone were going to take legal action against the scanlations, they would have been taken down by now.
I don't want to start an edit war, though, so I thought I'd bring it up here. Is there a way to ask one of the site moderators about this? Y'know, to see if they think it's OK to leave the link up or not?

This is not a forum or the Headscratcher page, but Italy is the same guy under different names in different time periods if you really want to know. I don't really get what are you trying to discuss about the page though.
I know a lot of fanart that depicts America pointing a gun at the viewer/onlooker or being The Gunslinger, probably as a reference to the US's gun laws. Should I put that somewhere, and if so, where should I put it?

Would Italy's cries of "Doitsu! Doitsu! (a more frantic "Germany! Germany!" be an example of a Survival Mantra and Hell Is That Noise, and France's (correct me if I'm wrong) "I wish you would become a French territory" in episode 12/13 of World Series be the latest addition to Madness Mantra?
Also, would Sealand, after thinking that the countries were acting like douchebags for about 3/4 of his debut episode, and then finally realizing that no one pays attention to him is because no one recognized him as a country during the last few minutes be an example of The Last Horse Crosses the Finish Line, or are there better examples for this trope?

What is the name of the military unit the ottoman empire's original uniform or the name of the outfit itself? I saw it once when surfing wikipedia and remember being somewhat surprised how similar the outfits were(Historical accuracy for the win!), but... unfortunately I forgot the name of it as I was doing a research project on the Knights Hospitallers at the time, and have been unable to find any information since. Can anyone help me with this?

Did Not Do The Research: Averted for the most part, though it appears in the relationship between Germany and Italy - that is to say, a useless Italy being taken under the wing of Germany. In actual fact, Mussolini's Italy was ardently opposed to Hitler's Germany; Italian intervention in 1934 prevented Germany from forcing a union with Austria. When Italy invaded Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1935, Germany even provided the Abyssinians with arms as an act of revenge. It was only when the League of Nations clumsily reprimanded Italy for the affair and the Stresa Front collapsed that Italy turned to Germany. Even then, this alliance only became apparant when they both backed the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War.
- Though other strips taking place before WWII seem to disprove the idea that Italy lived with Germany between the two wars, and the published manga says that he only worked for him for some time after the first war due to becoming poor. However, the relationship between Italy and Germany is notable for seeming less caustic than it was in real history: Some Italian fans feel that Italy is MUCH too kind to Germany (or vice-versa), and others feel that their dynamic should be portrayed even worse than Russia and Lithuania's relationship.
- But really, it's just part of the "loose retelling of history" vibe of Hetalia in general. After all, Sweden and Finland are shown to still be close in modern times even with their real-life relations not being that super-good and Austria and Hungary are still going out even after the dissolution of their union/'marriage'; Germany and Italy are just one of many other instances of the countries in Hetalia having slightly different relationship dynamics than their real-life counterparts.
- Besides, if the story was 100% historically accurate it wouldn't be a comedy. Expecting it to treat country relations seriously and accurately to real life is missing the entire point of Hetalia.
- And yet, on this very page, the series' creator is also praised for having Shown Their Work. You cannot praise a show for its historical detail while at the same time handwaving away any complaints about inaccuracies on the basis that it is supposed to be funny.
- A more blatant example of research-lackiness or an oversight: The series depiction of Italy's invasion of Egypt and how Italy was only getting beat up by Egypt with Germany having to come in to save him. That, and the countries depicted growing up in the "Roman Empire" in the Chibitalia storyline seem to reflect the territories in the Frankish Empire (Northern Italy, and what would become the Kingdom of Germany/Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France). Then there's the matter of Germania (which was not an actual nation but the name given to regions populated by several Germanic tribes by the Romans).
- Dude. This is a gag series about historical anecdotes and such, told in yonkoma strips. Not a history book. The author is taking liberties with historical facts for the sake of simplicity and the sake of lulz. Being 100% historically accurate is not the main point.

My 2 cents? Yes, you can handwave them away. You couldn't if Hetalia was a serious series that tried to treat history and international relations in a serious and accurate way, but it's not. It's never pretended to treat history seriously, heck, it's never pretended to take itself seriously (and frankly, I don't understand why people keep expecting it to). The complaints above basically amount to "it's not realistic enough," which is true, but as someone already said, if it was realistic it wouldn't be a comedy (not funny), wouldn't be a yonkoma strip (too complicated), and it would have to chuck the entire premise out of the window (characters based on stereotypes, not true to real life). The main entry lists Politically Correct History, Anachronism Stew, etc. for a reason. And christ, there are enough characters already, would you have him make up characters for Francia or all the various Germanic tribes (good luck with that)? Characters he's never going to use again?
So no, this doesn't mean that Himaruya didn't do the research, it just means that the Rule of Funny and simplicity enjoy precedence. (Btw, there are some cases where he didn't actually do the research, but for some reason people never mention those, instead they keep complaining that the series is not serious and historically accurate enough.)

You know, the beauty of Hetalia is that while's not 100% accurate by itself, one can be met enough times with Fridge Brilliance for inconspicuous details (not spelled out either because classic censoring or just being too much for the yonkoma's short and lighthearted comedy format) thanks to propper external research... that's why I consider the series qualifies for Shown Their Work.

So, for an example of "Did Not Do the Research", Ancient Rome is described as having been killed by Germania and Ancient Greece is described as being killed by Turkey (or something to that general effect). Now, that completely ignores that point that after the Edict of Caracalla (the Constitutio Antoniniana) in 212, all free men under the rule of the Empire were Roman citizens (how could Germania have killed Ancient Rome if there were people all over the Eastern Mediterranean who were considered Roman citizens?). Also, it ignores the fact that what we call the Byzantine Empire called itself the Roman Empire and its people considered themselves Romans (in fact, to be called a Greek was an insult, one that implied the person being called Greek was a pagan). People in the West like to forget that the Roman Empire lived on until 1453 (and indeed after, since the hold-outs in the Morea and Trebizond considered themselves the remains of/successors to the Roman Empire) and simply lump the people into the Greek bin. It would perhaps be justifiable to call it Byzantium or Medeival Greece (since they spoke Greek) but if nations represent self-conception, all records show this Nation-tan should be Ancient Rome (or Christian Rome) and if it is what we think of them as, then it should be Byzantium - not Ancient Greece (Christianity and Rome both saw to the end of Greek self-identity). I know that this is probably a very minor point, but it still seems one that bears mention, since not doing research often comes up in the details.

Is anyone with me in trying to clean up the massive amounts of fanon Shipper On Deck going on in both the main article and the character sheet? APH has a disproportional number of jokes that circle around the comedy inherent in unintentional homoerotic suggestions, but neither Germany/Italy nor Sweden/Finland are canon pairings. England and America's relationship is one that openly reads as estranged family unless the slashgoggles are strapped on too tight; the only pairings that are even close to canon would be Chibitalia/HRE (HRE thinking Italy is a girl), Greece/Japan (one time), and if you stretch it, Spain/Romano (as of Spain legalising gay marriage).
Hetalia has homoerotic jokes and a fandom that largely subsists on slash, but it isn't a BL series. Could we make the article here reflect that?

I don't now. The Valentine's Strip did show that Germany was willing to go out whit Italy in a romantic date. And Sweden relationship with Finland is pretty obvious too. Is not just in peoples heads I would say. Should I link the strips? (Disclaimer: I don't really ship any of this parings so I'm trying to be as objective as I can)
Yeah, Germany and Italy got an entire Valentine's strip dedicated to them, they were shown as actually sleeping in the same bed, etc. Sweden obviously has a thing for Finland, was shown to be jealous once, and there was even a "you want kids? OK I'll try my best" joke with them (didn't Himaruya say Sweden is gay for Finland?). And as for America and England, I don't think the Valentine's chocolates strip, England wanting to cuddle for warmth (to which America replies "I'm not going to do anything" so he's not oblivious at all). England's bouts of tsundere/flustered behavior around America, or the implications of the "one hundred years of heartbreak" are strictly "estranged family" territory.
Of course this doesn't make any of them canon (although I'd say there's a pretty good case for Germany/Italy and Sweden->Finland is canon) but IMHO none of them are just a case of slash goggles strapped on too tight. If you think an entry claims they're canon go ahead and correct it, but personally I don't think there's a lot of things to clean up. A large percentage of this wiki is made up of fannish speculations.
And as for canon, there's Austria/Hungary who used to be married and are still on very good terms. You can't really get more canon than that...

I'm not denying that Sweden-Finland and Germany-Italy don't have jokes made about them that circle around a potential relationship, but jokes aren't the same as Ship Tease. Take note of how the punchlines in the Sweden-Finland strips is about Finland being scared of Sweden and moreso of the suggestion that he and Sweden are involved (or watch the relevant anime episode and the doomsday music as Sweden puts his arm around him). What Germany and Italy have going on is the comedy of inappropriately friendy Italian affection that confounds Germany who is up-tight and not used to dealing with others, but we have no reason to think that Italy is showing Germany any kind of love that he's not showing his other friends - he sleeps naked with Romano, too. The Valentines strip is about Germany falsely deducting from a self-help book that Italy is in love with him, but Italy's reaction to his over-the-top confession isn't exactly that of a man in love. And America and England, really: we know how England is about showing affection for anyone (o hai thar Anglo-Japanese Alliance Between Two Lonely People). We know that England has issues with any other brother figures in his life, we know that he is so used to being lonely and despised that he can hardly believe that America would agree to be his brother just like that. We know how completely crushed he was by America rejecting him as a brother. And we know, by the Cleaning of the Closet strip, that America's feelings about it circle around childhood memories. Everything about their backstory is about familiar love that ended badly, and to a casual reader who isn't looking for slash, then their present relationship would come across as a consequence of that, not as UST.
Sweden/Finland and Germany/Italy are listed as "official couples" on at least one place that I recall, and all three have it listed in various places in the character pages. Hetalia has its own Ship Tease page, but for goodness' sake: Hetalia fans on LJ will be screaming about the ship tease if two characters are standing next to each other on a poster. I'm not saying that there isn't a well of homosexuality in Hetalia; what I'm saying is that I see a lot of fans taking these things to have more meaning than they actually have, and that it shows on the pages here.
About Sweden, given Word of God stance in the matter maybe we should change it to Single-Target Sexuality for Finland.
And about Italy's feelings for Germany they are ambiguous enough [1] [2] But I can't make a conclusive judgment on this... And since Italy admits his first love was a boy (the HRE) but he also hits on girls, that makes him Bi The Way anyway.
Well... for Sweden, it could be interpreted as either Single-Target Sexuality or If It's You, It's Okay towards Finny, so...

demivee: As for America and England, you're right, but what you say doesn't account for England wanting to cuddle (even if it's only for warmth, and that's an if there, seeing his reaction, and his other attempts to get closer to America), for the Valentine's Day event, the "hundred years heartbreak" (which is placed in a romantic context mind you) or England being dere and blushing. I'm not saying it's canon but you gotta admit the shippers are not pulling this out of thin air, there's at least the pretty high possibility of something more than "estranged family" on England's part, and America's reactions are ambiguous at times.

RE: Sweden and Finland. I read somewhere on this sight (most likely the Fridge Brilliance Anime page), that the Finns have this stereotype where they think that all Swedish men are gay. Hence Finland's comical fear and Sweden's <3 for Finland. Make of that whatever you will.

What about making folders for each character (that currently have more than one WMG obviously) plus "Other Nations" and "Hetaliaverse" (nation genetics goes there)?
I think that would end up being pretty messy, considering that there are Loads And Loads Of Characters. Maybe a folder that says "Character-Specific WMG"s would do?

That could work, the last option is making one for the 8 main characters + Prussia and one more folder for "other characters" (+ the general WMG folders) (take note I'm just basing this suggestions on one WMG page I saw, the WMG/Naruto and WMG/Bleach have different ways to do it, so I can't see any reliable or standard source of parameters so feel free to go ahead and do it in any way.)

YMMV is just a page type created to avoid the natter that comes along with these kinds of tropes. It's not a judgement call about whether any particular example is legitimate, it just means those pages have the YMMV header on them. The only exceptions to moving them are when it's an in-universe reaction, like if a You Fail History Forever example talks about a character comically failing history or something. I'll move them.

I'm really not happy about that. For a comic supported mostly by its fandom, some of the so-called YMMV is actually very important.
I don't think moving it (on any page) is a very good idea. Some people might miss it.

If it's appropriate to add, what would be the proper trope for mentioning that the title of the series is no longer relevant? (There's very little WWII, and the Axis get a lot less "screen-time" than the other characters, etc.)

- The Chibitalia chapter ends with the Holy Roman Empire (portrayed as a younger Germany) leaving Chibitalia aka Italy, kissing him and saying that he's "loved Italy since the 900s and will keep loving him no matter how many hundreds of years pass." If you're familiar with European history, you can guess how well that ends. They meet again as adults, but of course Germany has forgotten all about it by now. He may have started to recover his memories in the Valentines Special, but it's not clear.
- Not to mention the scene when Italy refuses to join with Holy Roman Empire. He explains that his grandfather, Rome, died because he begame too powerful, and had painful wounds from being attacked. He begs Holy Roman Empire not to become the next Rome, saying that he likes him just as he is. What does HRE do? He runs off in tears in lieu of a response.
- Chibitalia's desperate attempt to attract attention as HRE walks away to go to war - "Are you really leaving? No way... no way, Holy Roman Empire... wait, wait! What do I do... Holy Roman Empire!!"
- Also the "Cleaning Out the Storage" chapter, when America remembers how England helped raise him... only to nearly kill the rebellious America during The American Revolution and break down in tears when he can't bring himself to do so. ( "You used to be... so big...".)
- "England and Japanese Folklore" ends on a slightly somber note that bemoans the loss of Japanese traditions.
- Despite its brevity, Make A British Food was rather sad with America reminiscing about England and his (bad) food.
- Russia's Start of Darkness. "Hey, Lithuania... We don't want children who can't play nice, right?"
- Lithuania's dream(s).
- ""There's a side of Lithuania... I don't know". SEVERE Mood Whiplash there.
- Much milder than the other examples here, but poor Korea's reaction to seeing what China really thinks of him with the super-powered binoculars. "These are broken... so Korea didn't make them..."
- The animated rendition of how Liechtenstein and Switzerland met. It was sad in the manga, but the anime made it even more heartbreaking.
- America's face in the last panel here. It projects how, even though America bugs England constantly, when he sees that England is happier around his, ahem, 'imaginary friends' than America, America's a little heart broken.
To the Tear Jerker page, is taken to much space in the main page for nothing.

Eh, point taken. That said, I think you're overestimating the negative sentiment towards the series.
And I don't actually have that big a problem with the show, it's just that some details sort of bother me. And I think in the interest of representing the series as it is rather than looking at it through idealized fanboy goggles, that viewpoint should be represented. Which, admittedly, it already is in the opening/summary thing before the examples, so sorry about that.
But just to clarify: I like the show. I never read any of the strips, but I enjoy watching the anime and reading about the characters.

I don't think the Axis are portrayed as "heroes". None of the the characters actually do much involving WWII, and everybody gets a chance to be a main character for a story. the "axis powers" part of the title/idea is becoming obsolete, given the actual focus of the story.

Yeah, and still there are many comedy series set during the same period that "trivialize" what occurred, because mentioning them would kill the fun in an instant. And never mind the fact that most of Hetalia does not even take place during WWII, or that it never once makes fun of the seriously not funny things (unless you watched the dub which is an entirely different series at this point).
Let's not get into this here, the trope discussion page is not the place for this. If you want to hate on the show do it in the forum or something.

Can we please calm down a little over here? I mean just in general. Because every single trope entry on this page seems to have a "the dub fucking sucks" or "nobody in the world likes the dub" addendum, especially when it's not at all appropriate.

I'm sorry but it's you who needs to calm down. You keep deleting two lines that basically say "YMMV, not everyone thinks the dub is Woolseyism." Note that they're NOT deleting the original "Woolseyism" entry, they don't say "THE DUB FUCKING SUCKS," they're just adding a YMMV to it, something that happens everywhere in this wiki.
OK, so you like the dub, whatever, good for you. But it is controversial in the fandom and a great many of us don't consider it Woolseyism. Why is it "not fair" to have that noted in the main entry in an entirely civil style?
Also, I don't think you entirely understand what Woolseyism means. It doesn't simply mean "changes," it means "good changes." To quote from the trope page:
"Here's the thing. Woolsey's changes? They worked. Some of the lines were so well integrated into the collective consciousness of the game that they have been embraced by the fandom instead of reviled. Anyone else think that the Hetalia dub kind of skirts the Gag Dub line? I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but they've changed the dialogue to near self-parody levels at times.

Yes. Yes it does skirt the Gag Dub line. Tons of new jokes are thrown in, so much that I believe the translators also need writing credits at the end!
Too bad they didn't dub the end theme.
Not to mention the new wave of memes that are erupting even from just the previews, which will be both fun and annoying (but that's what memes tend to be, so whatever).
Eh, mixed feelings on that one, but I guess it would be nice to see an effort, even if just for fun.
At a con, I would give anything to see the VA's just dub over their own take on the ending theme! :D Even if their ad libbing sucked, it would totally we worth it.
If they did dub the ending theme, a good portion of the fanbase would be really pissed. Personally, I don't really care either way. That'd be funny at a con, though.
In the Memes page of this show, should we separate the list into "Japanese" and "English Dubs" categories? We have tons of memes from the preview clips of the dub alone, and it looks like they are going to be very free with the lines, so more are sure to come!
I've noticed that the reference to the Italy Scribbles (the title given to them on the old Hetalia manga page. On the actual strip page, the story was called "Botticelli's Erotic Painting") strips in "Old Shame" was removed.
These are the original strips that a fan saved in their collection of deleted material, for proof that yes, these did exist...and we should probably be glad they were removed like with the deleted chapter 3 strips (warning for some NSFW shot of Italy rear and France in general):

The strips kind of speak for themselves! Btw; outside that community, I've seen and heard of some very varied and explosive reactions regarding them. Just another example why when you delete stuff, you make sure it's gone and hope nobody saved your work. Or just don't put it on the net.

Actually, outside of Italy being a child it's not really worse than the Christmas Carnage. Of course Italy being a child changes things quite a bit (then again, I don't recally anybody having minded France lying naked on a bed with two almost naked boys, with all the necessary implications?) but still it's just a very crude and unfortune joke. It was a good decision to delete it, but really...
And explosive reactions or not, I wish people would just let this go. They were deleted, they're not part of canon, it's not Himaruya's fault that people go sniffing around his website looking for stuff he doesn't want them to see.

Well, in the comic they actually didn't do anything to Chibitalia except touching his butt and talking dirty (at the end explicitly say they didn't do it at least) and since is Botticelli's work they are talking Chibitalia was at least 500 years old at the time (even then, somehow that doesn't stop the squick factor). Still it was deleted for obvious reasons and is not part of the canon.
The intro references a 2020 announcement about new releases in 2021 - does anyone know what actually happened? Would be good to update this so it's not talking about "upcoming" releases two years ago.
