YMMV / Blue's Clues & You!

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In an interview, Joshua Dela Cruz stated that he actively works to avoid this, as he knows how the internet works. Often asking to retake scenes that he thinks would look weird.
  • Adorkable: Josh is just as charismatic and friendly as Steve was. Steve Burns has even stated at a few convention panels that Joshua Dela Cruz himself is normally like this off-camera as well, which is backed up by a few promotional materials and behind-the-scenes footage that have surfaced online.
  • Awesome Art: The show’s art style manages to stay true to the original and it looks visually stunning.
  • Awesome Music: The new theme song is definitely a fun and catchy number.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • If this blog post is anything to go by, some fans of the original are under the impression that emails completely replaced letters in the Mail Time segment. But in the show proper, Mailbox alternates between giving Josh emails and traditional letters. Either way, the format is still the same, as both are still presented as video messages from children.
    • It's common to see conservative people criticizing the reboot because apparently there is an entire episode involving a pride parade and a drag queen. Although there is content involving a pride parade sung by the drag queen Nina West, it is a video of just over three minutes that can only be found on the official YouTube channel, and is not actually part of the series.
    • The show is not "fully CGI". Only Blue, Magenta, and Rainbow Puppy are rendered in 3D. Everyone else is either puppet rigged or digitally animated.
  • Fanfic Fuel: This reboot has given many people things to ponder about:
    • Josh is the cousin of Steve and Joe, meaning that Steve and Joe have a relative with Filipino blood.
    • Steve somehow went from going to college on a hopscotch scholarship to a private detectivenote . Meanwhile, Joe has found himself working at/owning the Present Store.
    • The implication that Passing the Torch runs in the family a lot has given rise to many questions, like will Josh be the last owner, and is this a new tradition? Are there any female members capable of playing Blue's Clues in the future?note
    • Periwinkle's backstory receiving a “reboot” in this version also creates a lot of possibilities for theories. Is he the same Periwinkle from the original series? If yes, how did he become bipedal? What was his life like before he moved to the neighborhood? How did he meet his owner Aly? What city did he live in? And why is he living so far away from his grandfather? These are all questions that fans try to resolve through fanfictions.
    • Rainbow Puppy is a Hero of Another Story who is not only a famous singer among humans, she is a magical puppy who was born in the “real world”, is bipedal, knows how to speak and also has more powers than Blue, which creates the question of how she got to this point.
  • Fanon:
    • Although nothing is officially said, many fans just accepted that Miranda in this version is a member of Miranda from original series family instead of being the same character. This is because, in Latin America (where Miranda's family comes from), it is common to have members of the same family who share first names.
    • Marlon, the shopkeeper, being played by a transgender man is seen by some fans as also being transgender.
    • Although nothing is said about her identity, some people interpret Rainbow Puppy as being a member of the LGBT+ community, due to her behavior and association with rainbows.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Because both works have similar concepts, aesthetics, and share creators and voice actors, Blue's Clues & You! fans will usually also be Gabby’s Dollhouse fans.
  • I Knew It!: Many people theorized that the Handy Dandy Notebook would be a tablet or a smartphone. The reason being that it was heavily implied in news articles, and it would justify its more rectangular size in the promos. That turned out to be exactly the case, though it's actually both a smartphone and a notebook.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Some fans don't like how the episodes of this series are just rehashes of those from the original show. This became less of a problem in season 2, as the adaptations started becoming more loose, some of them only resembling the originals in concept alone. "Blue's Treasure Hunt", for example, is drastically different from "Blue's Big Treasure Hunt", changing the plot entirely, and adding a pirate theme. "Blue's Big Baking Show", meanwhile is a new episode entirely. The same can also be said for "Blue's Night Before Christmas", as while it technically adapts "Blue's Big Holiday", it has no resemblance to it other than being a Christmas special.
  • LGBT Fanbase: A video on the official YouTube channel has an alphabet song with p standing for "Pride" — the P itself rainbow-colored — showing various pride flags, which was a hit with LGBT+ people who grew up with the original show, especially because the scene included non-binary, pansexual, asexual, and other pride flags while many other depictions of LGBT+ themes in children's shows only show the catch-all rainbow flag. Later, at the end of May 2021, the show released a song sung by drag performer Nina West that is about an LGBT pride parade and explicitly uses terms such as "non-binary", "trans", and "ace" in its lyrics; this song has also been received warmly by the LGBT community.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Steve remembered us!"note
  • Moe: Blue and Magenta especially look cute in CGI, but Josh's other friends may count as well.
  • More Popular Replacement: Josh is a much more popular host than Joe was when he took over from Steve.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • While most of this series' episodes are remakes of those from the original series, this does not mark the first time such a thing has happened in the franchise. Back in the day, a lot of episodes from Steve's time as the host were remade when Joe became the new host.
    • This isn't the first time emails were used for the Mail Time segments. During the Mail Time segment in the original series episode "Magenta's Messages," Blue and Joe received an email from Magenta instead of the usual letter.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Even people who didn't warm up to Joe during the original series will admit to liking his appearances in this series. The consensus is that he works better as a supporting character than a lead.
  • Shocking Moments: Steve and Joe returning for the pilot and revealing to be the cousins of Josh. Though Joe may not be quite a surprise for some, given that he had voiced a character on Creative Galaxy, which is by the creators of Blue's Clues. Steve definitely, though. It gets even better; Steve is a director on at least a couple of episodes of Blue's Clues & You!.
  • Signature Scene: The first episode having Josh calling his cousins, Steve and Joe. More specifically, Detective Steve asking his friend (the now adult-audience) to ask them to help Josh.
  • Spiritual Successor: The "Play-Along Games" on the Noggin app can be seen as successors to the licensed Humongous Entertainment games, as they are adaptations of episodes made into point-and-click games. One of these games is even an adaptation of "Happy Birthday Blue!", essentially making it a Video Game Remake of Blue's Birthday Adventure.
  • Spoiled by the Format:
    • In "Bluestock," there are musical clues instead of the normally drawn clues. However, the tune is so utterly recognizable that the very first clue makes it 100% obvious to anyone who knows the song (which is pretty much anyone not living under a rock) that the answer is "Old MacDonald (Had a Farm)."
    • "Story Time with Camilla" has a straight answer given in ASL. The difficulty comes from the audience remembering what the words were, as Josh does not read the video clues as he would normally.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • A big deal was made about Josh's notebook being part smartphone. However, that aspect is only plot-relevant exactly five times in season 1, and is otherwise only used for e-mails. Not helping is that e-mails themselves became sparser in season 2 onwards, making it redundant.
      • The smartphone part would see some use again in season 3's "Blue's Storytime with Camila", where instead of drawing the clues, Josh records either him or Camila doing the ASL signs for each one instead.
      • Fast forward to season 4's "Kamusta, Phillippines!", where Josh instead takes photos of the clues, as he lost his crayon. This is actually something fans were speculating would be a constant before the series premiered, as having a camera would negate having to draw clues. At this point, it really begs the question of what the purpose of the notebook half even is other than being faithful to the original series.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: As with the previous series, some people still aren't aware Blue is a girl, but luckily the theme song makes this clearer.
