Poor Kanna...

Sad Moments from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.

  • Episode 2 has Kanna getting angry at Kobayashi believing she deliberately took Tohru away from her. It's then revealed she was banished from her world after a prank gone wrong and has nowhere else to go. When Kobayashi offers to let her stay at her place, Kanna begins to cry with peaceful music in the background.
  • In Episode 13, Tohru is taken back home by her father. Because of that, Kobayashi's life begins to decline as she struggles to take care of Kanna while working full-time. Eventually, her apartment gets more and more of a mess and it's shown how miserable she really is without Tohru. Fortunately, they reunite and it shows that Kobayashi needs Tohru just as much as she needs her. And at the end while Kobayashi is visiting her parents for the first time with Tohru and Kanna, Tohru mentions how because her lifespan is drastically longer than any human's, she'll never grow old with Kobayashi as she hoped she would and just wants to cherish the time she has with her.
  • The opening for season 2 has a small tribute for Yasuhiro Takemoto (the director of season 1 who was killed in the Kyoto Animation arson attack), crediting them as series director over a shot of Tohru and Kobayashi descending from the sky at sunset. It gets even sadder if you know the lyrics for the song that play during and immediately afterwards.

  • Ilulu's backstory. In her youth she was remarkably friendly towards humans for a Chaos dragon, even considering a few to be her friends. The deaths of her parents at the hands of humans and the extremist anti-human rhetoric of the Chaos faction caused her to develop a hatred for humanity until meeting Kobayashi.
    • A later flashback compounds this. Showing that her human friends made a doll in her likeness which she loved, only for the Chaos faction to tell her to get rid of it following the death of her parents. This is why she is so adamant throughout the chapter trying to reunite the lost doll with its lost owner, and ends up breaking down crying with the owner when she reunites them.
  • Chapter 58 has a flashback of Tohru when she first met Kanna. Kanna explains she became a human because there's more she could do with human hands like play pranks. When Tohru calls her childish, Kanna's eyes begin to water. Then she says, "I want attention." and it's a reminder of how she was banished for a prank and that her parents neglected her.
  • The season 2 finale in the anime has a small moment where Saikawa talks to Kanna about them continuing to come to festivals together once they're old ladies. Kanna becomes lost in thought for a moment before commenting "Saikawa. Live a long life."
  • Around the end of the season 2 OVA, Chloe and Saikawa start crying as Chloe has to go back to Minnesota.
  • Seeing how much losing Tohru as a friend hurt Elma in chapter 64 can really tug at the heartstrings. In the middle of their practice fight, she starts describing how Tohru would refuse to go to a festival with her, and how much that hurt, followed by accusing her of playing with people's hearts, then just breaking down in tears, saying that she just wants to be friends with Tohru like before and calling Tohru a "big meanie!" The fact that they do make up right after that, though, is just pure heartwarming.
  • Chapter 130 shows that Ilulu still has a lot of self doubt, fearing that she will eventually mess up the new life she has created.
Ilulu: "I'm sort of...worried that I'm gonna mess things up again. Like I always do. I'm scared I'm going to break everything...because I don't know anything."
