Gee, who would've thought that such a fluffy series as this could be so terrifying at times?

  • Fafnir's official appearance in the anime, seen at right, is nothing short of terrifying. In episode 3, he appears outside of Kobayashi's apartment as a purple-horned demon with More Teeth than the Osmond Family.
    • After transforming into A Form You Are Comfortable With, Fafnir states with a Death Glare that the human world is annoying enough for him to destroy, much to the horror of Kobayashi and Takiya.
    • Later episodes show that Fafnir's true dragon form is even more terrifying, with six eyes and a body that looks to be composed mostly of tentacles. This means that the form he first showed up in during episode 3 was already his initial attempt at hiding his true form.
  • The fact that any one of the dragons could easily wipe out the entire human race in the blink of an eye and no one would be able to stop them. Kobayashi points this out while Tohru and Kanna are playing in the field, and Kanna comments later on that the last time Tohru and Elma fought, three islands were destroyed.
  • Tohru's father chillingly demonstrates how cruel and racist the Dragons are as a race when he shattered Kobayashi's glasses and sent her flying back with a "light" flick of his index-finger, with as much thought given as one would when swatting a fly; all for the "crime" of being a human trying to join in a conversation between two dragons. This is a horrifying reminder of how the sweet and goofy dragons we came to love are the exceptions; normal dragons view us Homo Sapiens as the equal of maggots and insects, and would casually murder us all with the angst given to killing a motel full of roaches.
  • Tohru's taste for casual violence, fits of pique, and need to remind herself that murder is not the go-to response for common irritations are rather unsettling when one recalls how much power she wields. However the tail end of the Ilulu arc in the manga provides a glimpse of her actual wrath, and all the dragonfire-spewing tantrums pale in comparison to these near-conversational words from out of the shadows:
"Miss Kobayashi... you're wounded... did this man hurt you?"
  • Despite Telne's casual behaviour towards Kobayashi being pretty much the same as the previous two parents before her, the mere threat from her is enough to make Kobayashi stand on her feet, if not for Tohru watching from afar. Her Perception Control magic alone puts her as one of the most terrifyingly strongest characters in the series suitable for her position as number 2 in the Harmony Faction. Being able to affect objects no matter the distance as long as they are in her perception ala splitting a cloud by moving her finger across it, or as shown in the above example, almost squishing Kobayashi between her fingers.
  • In one chapter, Fafnir has Lucoa model for his new doujin. Fine right? Except to match the dark gory images he wants, she does this by transforming her body into broken and mangled shapes. (Offscreen but still.) In the anime you get it in silhouette.
  • Ilulu's first attempt to give herself human hands results in her having digitless balls at the ends of her arms. Except they're not actually digitless, with the balls working perfectly because they're covered in millions of tiny, perfectly formed hair-sized hands. Many readers/viewers have voiced agreement with Tohru about how creepy and disturbing this is.
  • Jii can be a bit unnerving, on account of his face being a perpetually warped Slasher Smile, his extremely cavalier attitude towards violence, including towards fellow Harmony dragons like Elma and Telne, and his tendency to suddenly take over for Jida.
  • Chapter 120 gives us a glimpse about how terrifyingly powerful Fafnir can be if he is not holding back. Where Kanna's strategy to try to distract him with a rare game almost disastrously backfires as it triggers his treasure instinct. If Tohru didn't deflect his full power curse flame at the last second Ilulu would have been incinerated.
