Shout Out / Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

Go To

  • When traveling across the Overworld, a good way to run into enemies is to traipse through the tall grass.
  • The Blank Slate Legendary item is a shout-out to the Tabula Rasa unique from Path of Exile.
  • One of the lines the Mighty Knight vending machine plays is a reference to Deus Ex, Dishonored and a number of other immersive sims.
Mighty Knight: Do not forget the Knight's Code! Which is 0451, it gets you in the side gate.
  • The foot soldiers for the Dragon Lord are comprised mostly of reanimated skeletons, not unlike those of the big bad of Army of Darkness.
  • Torgue the Bard has only one attack: the explosion riff. He can only use it once a day. He must have gotten tips from Megumin.
  • The mission in which you attempt to aid and recruit Torgue is called “Thy Bard, with a Vengeance”.
  • The voices of the Skeleton Army might put one in mind of Alan Oppenheimer’s performance of Skeletor.
  • Early into the GTFO quest, Valentine will paraphrase the opening lines of “Revolution” by The Beatles… and then claim that the lyrics just popped into his head when Frette questions him about it.
  • The tavern in Brighthoof, Izzy’s Fizzies, might be inspired by the song “Izzy’s Got the Frizzies” from Phineas and Ferb.
  • For the dying words of the Pirate Necromancers, you might hear them proclaim that their only regret is that they have Bone-itis.
  • The Murph side-mission is one big reference to The Smurfs which includes the origin of Smurfette and the infamous Black/Purple Smurf story (for added irony, the infected Murphs are colored white and blue).
  • One of the areas in Mount Craw is named “Furious Gorge”.
  • The Dragon Lord's Fortress, The Fearamid shares a name with Bill Cipher's Castle.
  • The name of the Pirate Skeleton Bones-Three-Wood is a play on Guybrush Threepwood, the protagonist of the Monkey Island games. Likewise, his counterpart LeChance, is a play on LeChuck, the villain of the same franchise. Another character in the quest line, Long Bronzed Gilbert is a reference to Ron Gilbert, the creator of Monkey Island.
  • In the “Lyre and Brimstone” side quest, the leader of the Talons of Boneflesh goes by the moniker “Sinistrella”, but her real name is apparently “Cindy”. One imagines that if she were given more backstory, she would not have a good relationship with her step-mother…
  • The character Zygaxis has a low raspy voice that feels inspired by that of Louis Armstrong.
  • Claptrap’s quest in the Weapwild Dankness, “A Knight’s Toil” has the player helping him seek out a powerful “spell-nade”. While this is technically a nod to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the rest of the quest focuses more on Arthurian Legend in general. You face a King “Archer” and his Knights of the Round Table, a Lake Lady, a Sir “Llance” and even a wizard named Mervin (complete with implied demonic connections for a deep cut). Claptrap even gets his hands on a legendary sword, “Extra-Caliber”.
    • Said Spell-nade even has the flavor text "Blow thine enemies to tiny bits."
  • The McGuffin of the game, the Sword of Souls, is capable of absorbing the souls of evil beings, as shown with Zomboss. This specific power is similar to that of Soultaker, a blade used by DC Comics character Katana.
  • A woman in Brighthoof offhandedly mentions the possibility of worshipping the Elder Gods before dismissing them as a “hot mess”.
  • The entire "The Ditcher" questline is one giant Take That! to The Witcher.
  • Claptrap's quest in Mount Craw, "Forgery" has the player help him trick his blacksmithing teacher by stealing some powerful magic items. These items, the Ring of Fire Dancing and Cloak of Frost Resistance, were said to previously be owned by Kjaro and Runald respectively. These names are a reference to Risk of Rain 2, a roguelike with items called Kjaro's Band and Runald's Band, which cause powerful fire or ice attacks.
  • Near the end, Tina tries to introduce a plot twist that The Dragon Lord was collecting Soul Energy to save his lover, who was encased in a crystal-shaped chamber. Now where would she get that idea?
  • Covens in Brighthoof are described as being made up of bored househusbands and housewives treating witchcraft like a book club. They’d get along great with the Satanists of Good Omens.
  • Also Sprach Zatharustra playsnote  when a massive “meteor”note  is lifted from the game board.
  • The “Ron Rivote” side quest is a nod to Don Quixote, complete with a “cyclops”note  standing in for the “dragon”note .
  • The “In the Belly is a Beast” side quest is a Darker and Edgier twist on Pinocchio, complete with wooden puppet boy, a blue fairy, and a whale-like creature.
  • When you defeat Dry'l, he gives a thumbs-up before fully sinking, in reference to Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • One of the Chaos Chamber modifiers is called Rend and Rupture, which causes low-health enemies to glow blue and drop health pickups while dying in one hit if meleed.
