Season One
Episode 5 - Point Of Origin
- The wedding hall collapse in the episode's beginning is based on the horrific 2001 Versailles wedding hall disaster. Both incidents are even revealed to have been constructed with faulty material.
- The man eating another man's face is based on the infamous Miami Cannibal Attack. Even the subject of bath salts is brought up in the episode.
- The story of the dentist killed by a tiger, is based on the real story of the guy who killed Cecil the lion was also a dentist and also was hit with a large amount of public outcry for the deed.
- The two hoarder brothers, one of whom is blind, that get trapped in their booby-trapped house are based on the Collyer Brothers, the episode differs in this case as the 118 are eventually able to navigate through the tunnels and booby traps and save the brothers.
Season Two
Episode 1 - Under Pressure
- The YouTubers with the microwave filled with cement? That might be based on TGF Bro's video where they do the same action with the same outcome.
- The case of a man getting stuck in an ATM was inspired by a similar event happening in Corpus Christi, Texas.
- The waitress who lost her nose due a mistletoe drone? The same thing happened to a reporter at a Friday's.
- In this episode, a boy who was kidnapped at age 5 escapes while said kidnapper is out of the house with said kidnapper’s latest victim (a 6 year old boy) six years after he was abducted. Because of his young age when he was abducted, he barely remembers who he really is. This is based on the Steven Stayner case. To further hammer home the reference, the kidnapper in the episode shares the surname Parnell with Steven’s real life kidnapper.
Season Three
Episode 6 - Monsters
- This episode has a malnourished teenage girl who escapes her family home, where her siblings are being held chained up in the basement by their religious parents. It could not have more clearly been based on the Turpin family. They even keep the detail of the parents being hoarders.
