Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 4 E 14 The Good Ol Ed

Go To

The Eds create a time capsule to remember some of their past exploits, such as their Prehistoric scam, or Double D's Hiccup Hijinks, or the world's largest pancake... which none of the others remember actually happening.

The Good Ol Ed provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Discussed. At the end of the flashback, Double D chuckles that the Tyrannosaurus Rex came from the Cretaceous Period and not the Triassic Period. note
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Eddy smacks Ed in the head with a fish, Double D tells him to stop in a shocked tone. He then eagerly asks if he remembered when he used that fish to duel with Rolf.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Double D doesn't get the clue that the whole memories thing is driving Eddy very angry, and at the end has to deal with Eddy chasing him to pummel him with a heavy fish for bringing up too many painful memories Eddy would be more than eager to forget about.
  • Clip Show: Subverted. All the Eds' recollections involve items from previous episodes, but the flashbacks themselves are from different events that were never previously depicted on the show. When Ed starts to veer into actual clip territory (with the beginning of the episode), Eddy puts his foot down.
    Eddy: I hate clip shows!
  • Continuity Cavalcade: This episode stands out as the first to showcase a gallery of Continuity Nods to past episodes.
  • Crazy Memory: A downplayed example, in that none of the flashbacks are any crazier than anything that happens on the show; what's crazy is that each one is remembered by only one of the Eds, while the other two have no recollection and think the other one is crazy.
  • Food Slap: Eddy hits Ed with a large fish, then threatens to hit both Ed and Double D with it for the Iris Out.
  • Giant Food: Ed's flashback has the Eds making a giant pancake.
  • Guinness Episode: The third flashback is about the time Eddy wanted to create the world's largest pancake.
  • Her Code Name Was "Mary Sue": Subverted, as the Eds' "flashbacks" features everyone in-character, even Ed's.
  • Hiccup Hijinks: The second flashback focuses on the time Double D got the hiccups.
  • Literal-Minded: At one point, Ed tries to scare the hiccups out of Double D. Which is to say, he opens up his mouth, and yells at the hiccups.
Ed: (yelling down Double D's throat) I AM A ZOMBIE, AND I WILL MALICE YOU WITH A SHOE HORN!
  • Metaphorgotten: In Ed's words: "An elephant never forgets, but I forget what the elephant remembers!"
  • Never My Fault: In a flashback to the Eds creating a giant pancake, the kids beat up Eddy when Ed accidentally pours pancake batter all over them because they trespassed onto the pancake setup to use it as a skate rink uninvited. Though they can be forgiven for this as the Eds never think to put up a sign that said not to walk on the butter or put a fence around it.
  • No Sympathy: When Double D wonders aloud what Nazz will think of them when they're older, Eddy calmly states that she'll think that (Double D) looks like an idiot and how could she let a hunk like (Eddy) get away. Rather than being insulted, Double D breaks into snickers at the idea that Eddy seriously believes that.
  • Rage Breaking Point: At first, Eddy was fine with "remembering" past events, but after Ed nearly turns the episode into a Clip Show and his friends start bringing up events that were humiliating and/or painful to him, he loses it.
  • Tap on the Head: When Ed flashes back to the beginning of the episode, Eddy stop him by striking him over the head with a large fish, leaving a large lump on his head.
  • Time Machine: Double D brings up the time that they created a "time machine" to send Jimmy and Jonny to the era when dinosaurs ruled the world.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The theme of this episode is the Eds reminiscing about their past scams and adventures. But as a twist, the flashbacks are based on scams/episodes that weren't shown before.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: "Malice me with a shoe horn?!"
