Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 2 E 19 Rent A Ed

Go To

After their circus act flops, the Eds start a repair service as their latest scam, but their efforts are constantly hindered by Ed's habit of breaking things.

Tropes:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The Eds manage to avoid a beating from the other kids, but it's unknown how long they'll be floating before the hydrant's water pressure gives out. Not that Kevin, Nazz, and Jonny at least aren't enjoying seeing them up there.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts with the Eds using a circus themed scam. At the end, Eddy is revealed to have on his costume and orchestrates their escape with a circus twist.
  • Bring the Anchor Along: After all the destruction Ed causes, Eddy and Double D tie him to a beam and use him as a towel rack for the Chez La Sweat scam. Unfortunately, when Eddy tells Rolf to put a towel on, Ed busts through the wall, still tied to the beam, to offer towel rack services. Even worse, it was the support beam for the house.
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma
Rolf: Loop-de-loop Ed boys have boiled an egg, yes?
Kevin: Laid, Rolf. Laid an egg.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When everyone ran out of the sauna after seeing Rolf naked when his towel falls off, he comes out to protest the "rudeness" of the guests, believing he's the one offended.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Eddy was still wearing his "Flying Eduardo Brothers" outfit underneath his other clothes in case they needed to make a quick getaway, and presumably never took it off at all. This is lampshaded by Double D, who asks "You're still wearing that thing?" when he sees Eddy tear off his uniform to reveal it.
  • Dressed in Layers: Near the end, Eddy rips off his clothes to reveal the strongman's leotard he wore during his scam at the beginning.
  • Epic Fail: Despite the Eds' best efforts, their attempt to fix Jonny's sink is an utter disaster. While Eddy think they did a great job, Double D is realistic.
Eddy: We were born to do this, Double D.
Edd: This is a natural talent? It's not fixed! Look at it!
  • Equippable Ally: When the Eds try to fix Jonny's sink, they do so using Ed like a wrench, a buzzsaw, and a screwdriver, with Eddy calling him "the ultimate tool".
  • "Eureka!" Moment: After Ed breaks the heat radiator in Jonny's house, Edd comments that it's becoming a sauna, inspiring Eddy to go into the sauna, sweat, and makeover business.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Eddy actually berates Ed for breaking the other kids' stuff. Granted, he was probably more concerned of not being able to collect any profits rather than the damage done to the kids' objects themselves, but it still shows that Eddy really was taking the task seriously and not trying to cause any trouble.
  • Face Palm: Edd does one in one scene.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: After Ed breaks Jonny’s radiator and Edd mentions how it feels like a sauna, Eddy suddenly drops the repair scam and opens a spa on Jonny’s house.
  • Hand Gag: When Plank somehow informs Jonny about what the Eds did to the kitchen sink, Eddy places a hand over his drawn mouth while sheepishly walking backwards.
  • Hydrant Geyser: At the end, Ed flings Edd and Eddy into the air and tries to catch them on top of a fire hydrant. They end up plunging Ed into the pavement, causing the entire ground to erupt with water and spray them into the air.
  • Improvised Weapon: When Jonny escapes from the tree he seeks revenge on the Eds wielding Plank in a sign as a shield and Jimmy with his hair hardened by peanut butter as a sword.
  • Karma Houdini: The Eds get away with converting Jonny's house into a sauna then destroying it. Eddy also keeps the profits he made off using Jonny's house as a sauna and does not leave anything behind for Jonny as restitution for leaving him homeless.
  • The Millstone: Ed in this episode, to a ridiculous degree. While always an idiot, here he almost seems to go out of his way to ruin the Mr. Fixit scam, ending with him destroying the support beam to Jonny's house.
  • Mr. Fixit: The Eds' latest scam after their circus act flops is a repair service, but they— mostly Ed— end up breaking more things than they can fix, from Jimmy's oven and bedroom to everything in Jonny's house to the point it collapses.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Rolf ends up losing his towel in the makeshift sauna and ends up scaring the kids and Eds in the process.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Basically the crux of the entire episode, as Ed keeps breaking everything that Eddy and Edd intended to fix.
  • Noodle Incident: We don't know what Jonny was doing in that tree that got him stuck.
Jonny: I did it again, huh, Plank?
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: Another hint that Plank may be alive is when Jonny somehow learned from him what the Eds did to the kitchen sink.
  • Oh, Crap!: "IS THAT THE SUPPORT BEAM TO THE HOUSE?!"
    Ed: What's a support beam?
    (the house begins to collapse)
Edd: This has been quite a day...
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Both Rolf and Jonny in unison when the "Flying Eduardo Brothers" go back to doing their hup-hups and ho-hos.
    Rolf: Those good-for-nothings are good-for-nothing.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally happy-go-lucky Jonny is rightfully furious at the Eds for destroying his house.
  • Painful Rhyme: This is Edd's reaction to Eddy's overly long slogan for their repair business.
    Eddy: No joke
    When it's broke
    Don't be blue
Let Eds' Quick Repair Service fix it
    And you won't sue!
  • Percussive Maintenance: When the Eds attempt to fix Jimmy's personal oven with a jammed door, Eddy and Ed's first attempt to fix it is to slam it with a chair and lamp respectively to try and whack it open. In the end, Ed chucks the whole oven into a wall, finally unsticking the door, but ruining the wall, and by this point, Jimmy's cookies have burnt so hot they burn holes in the floor.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The Eds manage to escape getting a beating from the kids (especially Jonny, who's real pissed about what they did to his house) but now they're stuck in the air because of the fire hydrant water.
  • Screaming at Squick: Everyone reacts with disgust at Rolf's nudity. The only exception was Kevin, who was laughing his head off as he left.
Kevin: You're on your own, dude!
  • Shaped Like Itself
Rolf: Those good-for-nothings are good for nothing!
  • Shout-Out:
    • When the Eds begin their circus act, Ed shouts “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah!
    • After sinking down into the ground and breaking the see-saw in the process, Ed shouts out, "Ob-la-di! Ob-la-da!"
  • Skewed Priorities: Eddy after he and his friends destroy Jonny's house.
Kevin: Oh, man. You guys are in so much trouble!
Eddy: Oh, found it! (caresses the money) Did you miss me?
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After Eddy and Ed try to “fix” Jimmy’s oven by beating it up, Edd suggests turning it off first. Unfortunately, Ed pulls off the knob while doing so.
  • Stealth Insult: When Edd complains that they don't have the proper tools to fix Jonny's sink, Eddy reassures him that they have the "ultimate tool" while glaring at Ed, who has been nothing but a hindrance all episode.
  • Suddenly Shouting:
Edd: I can't bear to look at Rolf—IS THAT THE SUPPORT BEAM TO THE HOUSE?!
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: During the Eds' circus act at the playground, Ed attempted to make Double D and Eddy go flying using the teeter-totter by jumping on the opposite end from the slide like a stunt he saw on TV. But because the teeter-totter is not durable to handle someone of Ed's size and strength jumping on it from such a tall height, he ends up breaking it instead.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: The Eds manage to escape the kids' wrath and keep the money with their Flying Eduardo Brothers performance from the beginning. Kevin even comments that they "ain't half bad".
  • Waking Non Sequitur: After emerging from the wreck of Jonny's house, Jimmy dizzily says "Rubber baby buggy bumpers..."
  • Waxing Lyrical: After performing his high-falling act, Ed shouts "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da".

Edd: IS THAT THE SUPPORT BEAM TO THE WIKI?!
Ed: What's a support beam?

"This Has Been Quite A Day"

When Eddy tells Rolf to put a towel on, Ed, who was acting as a towel rack, busted through the wall to offer services, bringing the support beam he was tied to with him. Double D puts it best just before the house collapses.

How well does it match the trope?
