A type of Empathic Environment, commonly used to indicate that a character is depressed, disappointed, or just plain sad. The rain is often called on to exaggerate their mood depending on how sad they are, or if their character is always like that, then this means that they're expressing true sadness for the first time. May be exaggerated to the point that the bad weather is restricted to a single Personal Raincloud following the character around.

The juxtaposition of rain and depression is also made frequently in Film Noir and similar settings, including Cyberpunk. After all, slogging about in the rain and mud, or being forced to stay indoors, will depress you pretty quickly. Funerals often have the mourners holding umbrellas as rain falls.

Contrast Dramatic Thunder and A Storm Is Coming, which indicate danger — or if emotions, anger. This rain is seldom accompanied by wind, either, and will not produce Lightning Reveal. The opposite purpose to Happy Rain and, to a degree, Romantic Rain; also contrast Rays from Heaven for a complete inverse. Related to Shower of Angst and Grave Clouds.

Anime & Manga

• Played straight in Berserk after Guts awakens four days after the Eclipse and has a huge Freak Out after fully realizing what had occurred. The chapter is aptly called "Awakening to a Nightmare".
• Happens in Betrayal Knows My Name when Shuusei goes missing. Hotsuma, who treasures him above all else, doesn't handle this very well and falls to his knees, in the rain, calling for him.
• Bleach:
  • Kubo generally uses rain to show when a character or group of characters (sometimes even all of Soul Society) have fallen into despair. The overriding symbolism of this belongs to Ichigo, where even his Empathic Weapon hates the rain because of the despair it represents inside Ichigo's soul. The origin of Ichigo's inner hollow lies with the proto-Arrancar White who only ever appeared when it rained and who merged with Ichigo's shinigami powers when passed down to him after hollowfying his Quincy mother. The reason why rain in Ichigo's inner world symbolises despair is because the inner hollow (as his real shinigami power) feeds on it to eliminate the source of that despair.
  • Second only to Ichigo, is Ryuuken. Flashbacks reveal a teenage Ryuuken was under enormous pressure to save the Quincy future. When Aizen's Hollowfication experiments bring Isshin and Masaki together, Ryuuken's life is destroyed in the process. As Masaki's designated future husband, Ryuuken's responsible for Masaki's wellbeing, but allows her to break the rules to save Isshin's life, leading to her Hollowfication. Forced to give her to the Shinigami to save her, his ability to protect the Quincy future in ruins, Ryuuken tries to walk away from the Quincies forever, stopped only by his future wife Kanae, whose fate it is to die with Masaki six years before the main storyline. Ryuuken's been living in the rain ever since.
• Code Geass: The entire colour palette is overlaid with grey after Shirley meets Lelouch having missed her date with him because she had to identify her father's body. Whose death Lelouch was responsible for. And things just get worse from there.
• It also rains during several early episodes of Dear Brother, while are also those were Nanako is most bullied and harassed due to being accepted into the the Sorority. Also, it's under a heavy and cold rain that Rei waits for five hours for Fukiko, not knowing that it's one of Fukiko's cruel mind-games. It causes her to fall extremely sick.
• This happens in the 25th episode of Death Note, when Light finds L standing on the roof in the pouring rain, staring listlessly off into space. They exchange cryptic remarks, until L finally asks Light if he's ever told the truth in his entire life. At a moment of high drama, it instantly becomes Dramatic Thunder.
• In Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, it was raining heavily when Future Trunks turned Super Saiyan for the first time after finding the dead body of his Big Brother Mentor.
• In Fruits Basket, the event where Kyo's true monster form is revealed happens during a heavy rain pour.
• Fullmetal Alchemist:
  • In Chapter 6, after Ed has had a rough couple of days — including a nightmare about his mother, and the fate of Nina Tucker — he sits under a clock tower in the rain to brood, and Al joins him.
    Ed: I thought that if I went outside, maybe the rain would wash off some of this sadness. But even one drop hitting my face is making me depressed.
    Al: Since I don't have a body, I can't feel the rain hitting my skin either. It's really sad. It hurts.
  • Averted with Maes Hughes's funeral, which takes place on a sunny day...although Roy Mustang insists that it's raining, both because he's crying, and as a metaphor for how useless he feels (since his flame alchemy makes him helpless in the rain).
  • Brotherhood's fifth opening song is called Rain by SID, so naturally, this trope applies when the chorus hits, with dark clouds forming as the song builds up, highlighting the tragedy and intense emotions over the course of this final arc. The sky breaks when Ed sees a vision of his mother, and the opening ends with bright light from outside a house, and clear skies.
• Occurs in Gankutsuou. Most often in the later half of the series. Albert even walks home in the rain in a depressed manner at one point.
• In Gintama Episode 211, it's raining when Gintoki finds Otose stabbed and gets thrashed by Jirocho.
• Volume 2 of Girl Friends (2006) ends with Mari walking out of Akko's house and into the rain after she finally reveals to her best friend that she was in love with her and gives her a Forced Kiss on the lips, causing them to be estranged from each other for several days. The rain seems to continue until the two of them meet again and try to reconcile their friendship once more.
• Granbelm: In the aftermath of Kuon's death, Mangetsu and Shigetsu return to the real world in the midst of a downpour. At the same time, Mangetsu learns she's really a figment created by Shigetsu's desire to have someone to help her, all-while seeing the life she thought she had didn't exist.
• Used in the America's Cleaning of the Storage episode of Hetalia: Axis Powers during the flashback to the war.
• In Hidamari Sketch's tanabata episode, Sae gets angry with Hiro to where they aren't seen together at all, and Sae keeps visiting Yuno and Miyako's classroom at the breaks. It rains the entire time until the mood is brought back up. Twice, characters say the weather reflects what's going on at Hidamari Apartments: Once while it's raining, and once after.
  • In another episode, Yuno and Miyako go to the convenience store, thinking they have time before the rain comes. They don't, as it comes down while they're inside. Worse, Miyako learns that the store isn't carrying nikuman, making her sad. On the way home, she says that the rain in the sky is like the rain in her heart, but then her foot impacts a puddle, cheering her up as she begins to run the rest of the way back, splashing puddles on the way.
• During the second episode of I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying 2nd Thread, it starts raining when Kaoru is feeling insecure about her compatibility with Hajime. It stops raining when he kisses her.
• The seventh episode of THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls has dark, constant rain for most of the episode. Appropriately, it's one where most of the characters are feeling down.
• In Kids on the Slope, when Kaoru finds out his father has only come to gather his stuff and won't have time for a proper visit, he heads up to his school's roof in the middle of a downpour to think about the things he wants to talk to his father about but won't get the time to, like him making new friends and wanting to know more about his Missing Mom.
• This is used in a scene in the Kotoura-san anime's Downer Beginning, which is already Deliberately Monochrome. At the said scene, Haruka got past her Despair Event Horizon for a second time, which made her to believe cynically that her telepathy dooms every living thing she cares about.
• In Lady Jewelpet, it was pouring when Luea was abandoned by her first Petit Lady Diana, who had to run away to avoid being chosen for a life she didn't want. Whenever it rains, Luea is reminded of what happened.
• Lyrical Nanoha:
  • This happened for Fate in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's when she was saying goodbye to Alicia in her dream world. It was also raining when Vita (during her hunt for Linker Cores) talked about how terrified she was of the possibility of Hayate dying. The movie upgraded the later scene to a full on thunderstorm.
  • It's raining in Episode 7 of ViVid Strike! after Rinne defeats Miura. Later combined with Battle in the Rain in Episode 10 when Rinne's self loathing reaches it's peak during her fight with Fuka (the episode is even titled "Rain").
• In Marginal Prince, Joshua sings four times in the course of the series. Twice the songs are about his feelings and despair and of course it rains in torrents during these montages.
• In Monster, Tenma sinks to his knees to curse and bemoan the cruel fate that made him the savior of a murderer in the middle of a rainstorm. It's very sad, but the water getting on his pants is like the clothing equivalent of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich.
• This begins right after Naruto and Sasuke's confrontation in episode 134, as Sasuke stares down at his unconscious rival, and continues as he stumbles off to Orochimaru while Kakashi starts hauling Naruto home.
  • Most of the time it rains when something bad happens to the Uchiha. It rained for Itachi back when we thought he was the Big Bad and during his and Sasuke's fight.
  • It also rained when the Third Hokage died and when his son Asuma died. There'a also a perpetual Gray Rain of Depression over the Hidden Rain Village; one of the characters even compares it to the country constantly crying.
• In Chapter 352 of Negima! Magister Negi Magi, Asuna is wandering around Mahora in 2135, looking for anything that she can recognize from her time. When she comes across Eva's now ruined cottage, the weather goes from nice to downpour in two panels, with Asuna's head bowed.
  • Its sequel, UQ Holder! provides additional background. As revealed in chapter 148, in a timeline without Asuna present, Negi cannot win against Nagi Ialda in 2025. Yue, Nodoka, Rakan and Albireo Imma all become the Lifemaker's marionettes and Chisame blocks an attack for Negi. The next scene shows Negi slowly walking with his head low towards Eva's cottage, not caring whether he is soaking wet in the rain, that initially masks that he's crying.
• In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tokyo-3 is rainy and dark during the battle with Arael, wherein Asuka's mind is invaded and the trauma of her childhood relived. She herself is bathed in bright light, however.
• In Prétear, Sasame is shown wandering around depressed in a rainstorm after his Anguished Declaration of Love to Takako.
• In Puella Magi Madoka Magica, it rains heavily after Sakaya's funeral, and throughout Madoka's phase of Heroic BSoD afterward.
• Megumi Hayashibara's Ranma ½ Image Song "November Rain" is about Ranma having a fight with Akane and then having to go back home alone under the rain.
• In Robotech/Super Dimension Fortress Macross, one of the episodes is called (A) Rainy Night, and is just that, a rather restrained, remarkably mature (in the proper sense of the word) conversation takes place between two of the major female characters about their love lives past and present, while a soaking rain comes down outside. One of the women is involved in a very dysfunctional relationship with a mecha officer, and the other tells her the story of how she met and got together with a by-then-deceased pilot. No explosions, no gunfire, not much comic relief, the entire episode is conversation and memories of a deceased character.
• In Sailor Moon Season R episode 61, after Mamoru declares a break-up to Usagi, the devastated Usagi walks away from Mamoru's house, rests and weeps inside a phone booth when it's raining outside.
  • In Eternal Episode 194, rain begins to fall when Usagi collapses in tears because she can no longer bear the strain of wondering why Mamoru in America hasn't written back to her at all (unbeknownst to her, he's dead).
• In Saki, in a preview sequence at the end of the first season, this is present in a scene that seems to imply that a rift will eventually form between Saki and Nodoka; their backs are to each other, and one of the gifts they got for each other has been dropped in a puddle.
• In School Rumble, it starts to rain just as Eri is heading home from a shopping trip with the ingredients she needs to cook dinner for her often-absent father. Suddenly her father pulls up in front of her in his limousine- but rather than being there to pick her up, he tells her that something has come up and he has to leave Japan at once, so he won't be able to have dinner with her after all. She tells him she understands, but when he drives off again and leaves her there, the rain rapidly gets heavier as she just stands there miserably. Luckily, that's the moment Harima showed up behind her with his umbrella...
• It started raining in Seiyu's Life! after Futaba found out that Rin would be replacing her in a roll that she really wanted to reprise. Ichigo even lampshaded it, pointing out that the weather forecast had said it was supposed to be sunny out.
• In the Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind OVA, it beings to rain when Ryu barely controls his Superpowered Evil Side known as "Evil Ryu" thanks to Sakura's Cooldown Hug, and falls into an Heroic BSoD.
• Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note: The latter half of episode 8, when the case of the month brought down Sunahara's father's company, and he disappears from school.
• Used during two particularly tragic events in Tokyo Ghoul. It is raining when Mrs. Fueguchi takes her daughter out, but is played as a happy moment right up until the Investigators corner them. The skies quickly darken, with the bright colors muted as she makes a Heroic Sacrifice to give Hinami time to escape. The trope returns in full force in the final arc of the original series, raining heavily throughout the CCG raid of Anteiku, which concludes on a particularly bleak note.
• Voices of a Distant Star: It is raining heavily when Noboru tries to gather the resolve to let go of Mikako. And then the message she had sent 1 year ago arrives; by the time he finishes reading it, so does the rain.
• Discussed in Weathering With You; the bleak weather mirroring Hodaka's early prospects in Tokyo is contrasted with the uplifting mood one gets from blue skies and sunshine. It's also inverted as well after Hina's sacrifice. Before that, blue skies and sunny weather signifies joyful happiness, but now the harsh sunlight only reminds Hodaka of what Hina did to achieve it. While everybody else is happy with the now clear weather, Hodaka could only look up to the sky in despair.
• The first season finale of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon has this after Kirinmaru defeats Towa and Moroha after killing Setsuna, and with the Tenseiga blade destroyed, Setsuna could not be revived, leaving Moroha lamenting that she and Towa couldn't avenge Setsuna, while Towa cries over Setsuna's corpse.
• It's raining in the Tokyo of You're Under Arrest! when Ken Nakajima becomes the victim of the "rogue officers" that cause accidents deliberately, and breaks his leg. He's seen laying down on the rain-wet pavement and grabbing his injured leg, much to the horror of his friends.

Asian Animation

• Happy Heroes: Season 8 Episode 7 ends with Happy S. finding Careful S. standing alone on a cliff, still depressed about Kalo's death. When Happy S. realizes that the story Careful S. wrote in the notebook Happy S. found earlier, featuring Kalo being sad over Careful S.'s death instead of the other way around, is a hint that Careful S. may have wanted to be the one who sacrificed himself, it starts to rain.
• In the Lamput episode "The Split", it rains and sad music plays as Fat Doc and Slim Doc go their separate ways at a bus stop after their feud.

Comic Books

• Lampshaded in Detective Comics (Vol 1) #535, where Batman is holding Jason Todd's beaten (not dead! ...yet) body. The narration states that Gotham has been in a drought for three months, but the heavens couldn't ignore a moment like this, so it rains.
• Justified and Played for Drama with Reginella in the Disney Ducks Comic Universe: her psychic powers are so immense that, if out of control, can control the weather on planetary scale, so when the combination of her doomed romance with Donald and both of them erasing the memories of each other in the attempt to help her concentrating on her duties as queen of her world her depression, made worse by not knowing why, started causing incessant rains that were threatening to flood the entire planet.
• Justified in The Sandman (1989), as the Dreaming reflects Dream's emotions. After Thessaly dumps him, we see him simply standing and moping in continuous rain. Mervyn complains about this causing people to have dreams of existential angst and everyone in the Dreaming to get wet, while Lucien remarks that after Nada, the entire Dreaming was razed and stayed a wasteland for hundreds of years. In an interesting twist, the landscape does not change after he is forced to kill Orpheus, although he is obviously upset and grieving.

Fairy Tales

• In The Brothers Grimm's Brother and Sister, it rains while they flee their Wicked Stepmother. Sister comments on the Empathic Environment entailed.

Fan Works

• The Bolt Chronicles: At the start of "The Clouds," Mittens has her angst and loneliness mirrored by clouds and sleet. Clouds and imminent precipitation are seen throughout the story, reinforcing its bittersweet nature and the cat's confusion and lack of hope.
• Love Covers All Sins: The weather has already become foggy and wet when Watson leaves 221 Baker Street, and as he has time to think about his outburst at Holmes, the rain reflects his depression.
• Loved and Lost: As the heroes who've lost their prestige are being transported from Canterlot to the different places they're sentenced to be exiled, the weather is intensely rainy and thunderous.
• In the Sherlock Holmes fic Of Art And Autographs, Watson's argument with Holmes over his writing destroys most of his excitement for the book-signing, and the dreary rain as he leaves for the bookshop accentuates his mood.
• A variant happens at the end of chapter 2 of The Stranger, with the titular protagonist cowering inside a dumpster. It's hard not to blame him, he's stranded in the Crapsaccharine World that is Happy Tree Friends (which in this fic is a virtual reality controlled by a megalomaniac), and he just committed an Accidental Murder in a fit of paranoid rage.
• Time to Disinfect: After a nasty argument with Sunny, Mari wakes up to find that gray clouds and rain have blown in overnight, reflecting her own anxious mood.
• Justified in Wu Xing Shield; as a result of his Shoku powers now reacting to his emotions, Omi can produce rain whenever he's depressed. And considering the constant heartache Omi is put through, he's like that for a majority of the fic.

Films — Animated

• It was either parodied or used very cheesily in Alpha and Omega. When it looks like Kate has been trampled to death by caribou, everyone is very sad and the sky turns gray and there's thunder, then Kate wakes up, and instantly the sky turns blue again without a cloud in the sky.
• In An American Tail, it starts to rain as Fievel curls up alone in Orphan Alley and cries.
• Bluth's earlier film Banjo the Woodpile Cat has a strikingly similar scene.
• Chicken Run: when Ginger and the other chickens find out that Rocky was only a stunt rooster from the circus by being shot out of a cannon and can't really fly.
• Disney is fond of using this trope when characters die or seem dead. Such examples include:
  • Kerckak's death in Tarzan.
  • Shang's fall (seemingly to his death) in Mulan II.
  • Beast's Disney Death in Beauty and the Beast.
  • Ray's death in The Princess and the Frog.
  • When Trusty is hit by the dog-catcher's wagon in Lady and the Tramp.
  • Baloo's supposed death in The Jungle Book (1967).
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The scene where the dwarves surround Snow White's bed and cry. She didn't die, per se, but still...
• Other Disney examples:
  • The page image, from The Emperor's New Groove, is the shot that opens up the film, and shows Kuzco at his lowest, transformed into a llama and stranded alone in the jungle after Pacha rejects him.
  • Dumbo: The scene following the Pyramid of Pachyderms failure takes place in one. Casey Jr. moans as he pulls the circus train through a rainstorm, and all the elephants inside are shown injured and crying.
  • Cinderella III: A Twist in Time: The skies are gray and cloudy as Cinderella boards the ship that will take her away from the kingdom and her Prince, presumably forever, and it seems like she has lost any chance of regaining her Happily Ever After. However, when Prince Charming appears to rescue her and they reunite, the clouds part to give way to clear skies tinged with golden yellow and pink, to symbolize their happiness and new hope.
  • Winnie-the-Pooh and a Day for Eeyore: When we see Eeyore in his Gloomy Spot, it's raining, making it even gloomier than usual. When he moves away, we see that it's on account of a Personal Rain Cloud.
  • A slightly different variation of this tropes plays out in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh during the scene with Tigger glumly trudging away in the snow after Rabbit reminds him he couldn't bounce after he promised not to if he made it down from the tree. Because this takes place in the wintertime, it begins lightly snowing instead of raining.
  • Lampshaded in The Fox and the Hound 2. "Why does it always rain when things go wrong?"
  • Brave: It is storming during the night in the ruins of the witch's cottage, after Merida has learned her rash act of obtaining a spell to change her fate has possibly doomed her mother to live forever as a bear.
• DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp: Just as Scrooge McDuck is loaded into a police van because he entered his Money Bin which to his horror is now deemed illegal (due to Dijon stealing the genie's lamp and wishing to take the Money Bin for himself), a storm is heard. Then, while in prison, he mourns as rain falls and it finishes just as Scrooge makes a plan to infiltrate the Money Bin.
• This happens at the end of the film The Illusionist (2010) when Alice is told that magic isn't real.
• It rains as Littlefoot of The Land Before Time finds his mother after her fight with the Sharptooth. It starts to rain harder as she dies.
• Megamind: The scene immediately following Roxanne finding out Megamind lied about his "Bernard" persona has Roxanne walking through the rain dejected and heartbroken. Megamind is left to do the same at the end of the scene after Roxanne says that she would never fall in love with "someone like him".
• The Powerpuff Girls Movie has the girls left alone when the Professor doesn't pick them up from school (he got arrested), leaving them to walk home. As they sadly trod their way, it starts to rain.

Films — Live-Action

• A frequent motif of Akira Kurosawa. When his protagonists are at their lowest point, you can be sure rain will follow. Totally reversed in Ikiru; the protagonist is so happy to have achieved his final goal that not even heavy rain nor snow can stop him from rejoicing in a swing.
• Avengers: Endgame has this in the Japan sequence, starting with a Battle in the Rain where Hawkeye\Ronin slaughters the Yakuza, and then a sad rainy reunion between him and Black Widow.
• Blade Runner. Only at the end is there clear skies, and even then, it's still drizzling.
• In Bruce Almighty, as the titular Bruce Nolan realizes how he turned his city an anarchist place and his life miserable, especially when he sees his ex-girlfriend crying over him, he walks through a road as rain falls and calls out for God just before a truck hits him unconscious and is next sent to a heavenly and neat place.
• Brute Force (1947) introduces the prison and Joe this way.
• In a similar vein happens in Click where Michael has turned his life miserable (divorce, missing the growth of his children) with his almighty time remote control. An elder and sicker Michael tries to reach his family, he collapses to the ground and sees them one more time to say goodbye (and flip the finger to the pool monitor that re-married Michael's wife) as rain falls.
• In Crazy, Stupid, Love, this happens when Cal's attempt to reconcile with his estranged wife falls to pieces. He even lampshaded it by saying that it is such a cliche.
• Edge of Tomorrow. After a Death Montage in which Rita keeps getting killed, Cage is shown walking in the rain on a military base, not bothering with the ponchos the other soldiers are wearing. Instead of doing into battle as usual, he then deserts and goes to London where he sits in a pub Drowning My Sorrows until the aliens attack there as well.
• In a sad scene from the film Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest lampshades the appearance of a rainstorm with a song called "Gee I'm Glad It's Raining".
• Fifty Shades of Grey: When Ana and Christian break up in the end. Later, in the ending epilogue, Christian is seen running in the middle of the rainstorm.
• Godzilla Minus One features a rare example Played for Horror after Godzilla's rampage through Ginza, ending in him releasing his atomic breath and causing massive devastation. Afterwards, black rain begins to fall from the sky, with Shikishima caught in the downpour. It's not just rain, however; it's nuclear fallout, as the "atomic" part of "atomic breath" is played deadly straight.
• In Gone with the Wind, it's raining after Scarlett's miscarriage while Rhett pours his heart to Melanie, and foggy and gray as Melanie dies and Rhett leaves Scarlett for good.
• While this is also a fact of life for The Other Rainforest, The Goonies notably has this early on when Mr. Perkins arrives with paperwork regarding the imminent demolition of the kids' neighborhood.
• So many John Cusack movies. So many. High Fidelity mixes this with Romantic Rain as one of Rob's many ex-girlfriends, Laura, tells him that her dad just died and minutes later have sex in the car.
• Parodied in Hot Shots! Part Deux with the flashback to when Ramata leaves Topper. She sends him a card to break up with him. When it sinks in, it starts to rain but entirely localised to where Topper is standing.
• In The Hustler (1961), Eddie Felson takes Sarah out to dinner, then tells her that he will be leaving town for a little while. Fearing that he's dumping her, Sarah bolts out of the restaurant and runs straight into a downpour.
• In The King's Speech, after an argument, Lionel tried to see Albert to apologize. At the time, Albert's brother was planning to abdicate his sovereignty to Albert, so he was told that the Duke was "too busy" and shown to the door, where it was pouring rain outside.
• It's a perfectly nice day when Michel arrives at the Empire State Building in Love Affair to meet his lover Terry after six months apart. But she gets hit by a car in front of the building and misses their rendezvous. When he finally has to leave at closing time after having waited for hours, rain is pouring in New York.
• Used literally in Men in Black II, as the Light of Zartha leaves Earth.
• In Nine Days of One Year, rain patters the window of Lyolya and Gusev's apartment as she ponders the difficulties in their marriage.
• Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opens with rain falling on the abandoned paraphernalia of Will and Elizabeth's wedding as Cutler Beckett's men show up to arrest them both. And it's grey and drizzling in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides when Barbossa reaches Whitecap Bay. His landing party surveys the carnage wrought upon the mermaids, and the Providence is taken down by the surviving mermaids.

• In Skyfall, it starts raining in London after Bond is presumed dead, and it only stops when he returns.
• In So Close: After her older sister, Lynn's, funeral, Sue buries her camcorder that contains the memories of her and Lynn, in the middle of a heavy pouring rain.
• Sydney White: Sydney initially wants to join Kappa Phi Nu, which her mother was president of. However, she finds that the sorority is now run by Rich Bitch Rachel Witchburn. Rachel enjoys abusing her power over her fellow sisters and blocks Sydney from joining the sorority for fear that she would outshine her. Right after Sydney is kicked out of Kappa Phi Nu, it starts raining hard.
• Tevya: Khave, having been disowned and written off as dead by her family, stands outside in the pouring rain looking through a window as her mother dies.
• Happens twice in Trading Places. First, after being disgraced, Louis Winthorpe walks through the streets of Philadelphia on a rainy evening when he sees Billy Ray Valentine and the Dukes having dinner in a fancy restaurant, the sort of engagement Winthorpe used to go to, standing outside in a combination of scorn and sorrow upon his face. When he returns home, Ophelia finds that he's developing a cold. Later, once Louis learns the Dukes don't want anything to do with him and it looks that there's no hope of bouncing back, it immediately begin raining, and he takes out his pistol and pulls the trigger, but it jams.
• The technicians of The Truman Show attempt to invoke it at one point. Truman is sitting alone at a stormy beach in thought, which the show parallels with the loss of his father at sea when he was a child^note Whether Truman is genuinely thinking about that is never made clear, but it's likely. They cue up the rain to start falling on him, but it glitches and falls only on him, which makes him stare at the singular downpour in wonder; it scoots over to him in response, and eventually the whole sky finally begins its storm.
• In Withnail and I, the Downer Ending is made even bleaker by the copious amounts of heavy rain in the scene.
• Zachariah: When Matthew and Zachariah fight and split up, it starts to rain.

Literature

• A huge rainstorm occurs halfway through Autobiography of Red, while Geryon is still reeling from Herakles breaking up with him. In a variant of this trope, it isn't so much an Empathic Environment as it is Irony: the storm is portrayed as dynamic and forceful, in contrast to Geryon's inertia.
• In the Book of Ezra from The Bible, the period where God's people (the Jews that had returned from the Babylonian exile to Jerusalem) had to come to grips with being faithful to Him and divorce the foreign wives they had married also came during a period of heavy rain.
• In C. S. Lewis's The Great Divorce, Hell has this. All the time. And the houses don't keep it out.
• In Shaman Blues, the main character is fighting depression thorughout most of the story, and, fittingly, it rains nigh-all the time. Notably, when the intrigue is resolved and he's on his merry way to fixing his personal matters, it stops raining.
• In Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive we have the Weeping — four straight weeks of steady rain, with just one rainless day in the middle. Since there are no highstorms, all Stormlight-based lights are slowly going out. And this is the period that always makes Kaladin depressed.
• This shows up in Tempest: A Novel, when Jackson gets stuck in the past, it starts to rain. Justified in that time travel apparently causes rainy weather.
• In the Warrior Cats book Rising Storm, on a rainy gray afternoon Fireheart and Graystripe return to the ThunderClan camp that has been devastated by fire, where they find Halftail's body and the dying Yellowfang.

Live-Action TV

• Bridgerton: In the near end of season 2 chapter 7, rain starts pouring just as Anthony wakes up alone in the morning after spending a passionate night with Kate. Upon learning about Kate's departure, he immediately rushes to follow her. Despite he catches her on time, unfortunately Kate falls from her horse, thus he immediately rescues her by carrying her in the middle of the rainstorms. The rainstorm reflects their angst and guilt for finally "giving themselves in" to each other.
• The Crown (2016)
  • "Gloriana". After Queen Elizabeth refuses permission for her sister Princess Margaret to marry a divorced man, Margaret is shown stepping off an airplane in the rain, her white umbrella lost in a sea of surrounding black umbrellas held by the journalists waiting for her.
  • In "Pride and Joy", Queen Elizabeth unveils a statue to her father because the Queen Mother is too distraught to do so, even though it's been six years since the late King's death. Naturally it's raining.
  • In "Misadventure", journalists are shown taking photographs and film of the royal yacht as it sails, heedless of a downpour. On board Queen Elizabeth and her husband are having a domestic spat.
  • In "Dear Mrs. Kennedy" it's raining buckets on the Queen's estate, so her groundskeeper suggests she go back to the Palace. As she looks in the Land Rover's rear view mirror, it suddenly sinks in how she's getting older.
• Doctor Who:
  • The final scene of "Journey's End".
  • And, in "Blink", "It's the same rain" during the heartbreaking conversation in the hospital between Sally Sparrow and Billy Shipton, who she last saw as a young man but was caught by the Angels and is now dying of old age. The rain stops and the music swells as she determines to puzzle out the mystery of the DVDs.
• Friends:
  • After Ross and Rachel break up in "TOW the List".
  • Lampooned in "TOW Eddie Moves In" with Chandler and Joey.
• Happens in the first season finale of How I Met Your Mother when Lily calls-off her engagement to Marshall to follow her dreams. They eventually got better in the following season.
  • This instance was played with a bit in that it started out being a Happy Rain; Ted had spent the whole episode wanting it to rain so Robin wouldn't go on a corporate camping trip with a coworker who wanted to hook up with her. The rain was therefore seen as a good thing, complete with Ted and Robin finally getting together in the Romantic Rain, until Ted goes home the next morning and suddenly comes across the despondent Marshall.
• Played for Laughs in The Goodies Rule - OK? As the economy spirals downward, the Goodies are awarded OBEs at a Royal Garden Party as they're the only ones making money. Because all the other guests are in despair over the country's economic woes, the rain pours down until the Goodies are forced to leave the grounds of Buckingham Palace by rowboat.
• Interview with the Vampire (2022): In "In Throes of Increasing Wonder...", it's pouring rain after Paul's funeral, which matches with how heartbroken Louis de Pointe du Lac feels from the death of his brother.
• Underscoring the depressing situation with rain is one of common story-telling method in Kamen Rider. Examples include:
  • Kamen Rider Wizard: Haruto and Koyomi arrived at Remnants soaked through and through. They searched for some way to continue on after being used in Sabath, a dark magic ritual that shattered their lives.
  • Kamen Rider Drive: It starts raining during the Global Slowdown, when Roidmudes attempted to take over the world and kill all of humanity.
  • Kamen Rider Ex-Aid loves this to death. Among other examples (nine in total through the whole story including the movies and specials):
    • It rains when Taiga Hanaya fails to defeat the Graphite Bugster, causing the death of his patient and the loss of his medical license.
    • It starts raining through the fight between Kiriya Kujo and Kamen Rider Genm, which ends with Kiriya's death.
    • There are all together three scenes when it doesn't rain through Ex-Aid's summer movie, True Ending.
    • It rains through the end of the last Another Ending sequel movie, marking the end of Ex-Aid's story and Kuroto and Kiriya's death.
  • Kamen Rider Build: It rains when Soichi Isurugi comes across a lost amnesiac stranger while walking home and decided to take care of him until they find who he used to be. It also rains when Sento confronts Blood Stalk about this day after finding out that the enemy enforcer is Soichi Isurugi, took his memories and has been manipulating him the whole time.
  • Kamen Rider Zi-O: It starts raining shortly after Swartz dealed the finishing blow to Minato, killing him.
• The Killing is a show based on this trope. Every scene so far in the series has either been overcast, raining, or night. Granted, its set in Washington, but still...
• Mimpi Metropolitan:
  • Subverted in episode 18. Alan lampshades how it suddenly rains when he cries because he just lost another job, but it really is just Bambang spraying Alan with a water hose to invoke/parody this trope.
  • In episode 36, rainfall coincides with Bambang being alone in Bugenville Park waiting for Melani who doesn't know he's there. For this one, the show set it up by saying it's rainy season and having it rain in a prior scene, though rain never falls in the show afterwards.
• In Monday Mornings, it's raining when a couple whose 2-month-old daughter has a brain tumour await information about her and try to decide about her treatment. They're lean on each other and stare out of a window, looking extremely sad.
• NCIS. It is pouring throughout much of "Kill Ari" and "Kill Ari, 2", the episodes immediately following Caitlin Todd's murder and the team's efforts to find her killer. Also in "Hiatus" as the team grapples with Gibbs' injuries. And "Swan Song" when Mike Franks is killed.
• Our Miss Brooks: In "The Pet Shop", a misunderstanding means that Miss Brooks and Mr. Boynton are likely to stand one another up for their date. At the last moment, Miss Brooks decides to go wait for Mr. Boynton outside the pet shop as promised. Miss Brooks waits, likely in vain, as a grey rain of depression falls. Mr. Boynton also cannot stay away, and the misunderstanding is cleared. The rain likewise clears, and Miss Brooks and Mr. Boynton go out on their date.
• Zigzagged in Sesame Street: In the song "Rainy Day", the character likes the rain because it's important, but thinks that playing in the rain is unacceptable. Oscar and other grouches enjoy the rain, but that's because it makes other people unhappy...except for Ingrid, Humphrey, Gina, and a variety of kids who like to play in the rain...but Telly, Elmo and Zoe don't like it. However Stinky likes it..but that's because he is a plant.
• Sherlock:
  • The titular character jumps from the roof of St. Bart's hospital, apparently committing suicide, and as his best friend John tries to get to him the sky goes from partly cloudy to dark and rainy in a matter of minutes.
  • From the same episode: as John is describing the event to his therapist, and later when he's sitting alone in 221B, probably soon after the funeral, it's again raining heavily.
• Star Trek: Picard: In "Remembrance", considering that Earth has a weather control system, it's awfully convenient that it's pouring rain when a depressed Dahj is wandering the streets after witnessing her boyfriend's murder.
• Strong Medicine. Dr. Lu Delgado wanders through this after the grand jury declines to indict her rapist.
• Zoey 101: The episode "Chase's Grandma" has Chase sitting out in the rain when he learns that his grandmother had died.

• MonsterVerse:
  • In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when Godzilla seemingly dies and King Ghidorah takes control without Godzilla around to stop him, Ghidorah's hurricane causes torrential rains around the world where the heroes are based.
  • Skull Island: In "Doggone It", it starts raining when Charlie finds himself all alone and cut off from his friends.

• This is a common trope in country music to show that the singer is depressed or there is turmoil:
  • David Nail's "Let it Rain" involves the singer cheating on his wife and being thrown out into the rain (apparently inspired by the last scene of the movie "The Last Kiss").
  • Gary Allan's "Songs About Rain" is told from the point of view of an ex-boyfriend on his love's wedding day to someone else—and as he's driving around being depressed, all the radio will play are "songs about rain."

  • Garth Brooks' "The Thunder Rolls", about a wife discovering her husband's affair (or, according to the video, Domestic Abuse)

• "Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell" by ZZ Top knowingly uses the country metaphor, being from Texas, although it's a blues song. However, it doubles in that the desert is cold after rain falls, what with all the wet sand and all.
• Albert Hammond's "It Never Rains (In Southern California) ... it pours.
• Michael Jackson's "Stranger in Moscow" about loneliness and sadness has the opening line "I was wandering in the rain", the music video features Jackson in the pouring rain.
• New Radicals "I Don't Wanna Die Anymore" features "A life of rain" and "It's gonna rain" The song is about depression after the failure of a relationship. It is not completely evident if the 'two months of fun, two years of pain' in the song refers to a two month relationship breaking up and two years of depression, or about a relationship that was fun for two months and abusive for two years, though the former is far more likely. The narrator wants the girl back because otherwise he's going to kill himself.
• "Blue Heart Of Texas" by David Francey. He's feeling low about a failed relationship and the "pouring down rain" is not helping his mood.

• In Berenstain Bears' Camping Adventure, the Game Over screen depicts a dejected and tired Brother and Sister caught in the rain.
• Best of Three: During the game, it's raining hard nonstop outside. This goes along with Helen's situation: she's stuck talking to someone she dislikes, she's bored with her town, and she's stuck taking care of her younger brothers.
• In Catherine, despite his efforts, Katherine decides to break up with Vincent, with the following scene has him walking around in the rain thinking back on their relationship.
• In Crisis Core's ending, in which Zack dies before Cloud's eyes.
• In Final Fantasy VIII, Squall gets one of these during a flashback.
• Played With in Dragon Quest VII. A recurrent threat is the Gray Rain, which turns those caught out in it to stone. After dealing with the monster responsible for it in Verdham/Greenthumb Gardens, the richest man in town decides to throw a party celebrating everyone's recovery. The party is interrupted by regular rain, with most of the guests assuming the worst and fleeing... leading up to a heartwrenching sequence where Lavender berates Carraway for how he refuses to fight for her love, and he decides to leave the village rather than choose between her or his family's well-being.
• The battle after Emmeryn's Heroic Suicide in Fire Emblem: Awakening takes place in a heavy rainstorm.
• In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the weather turns rainy when Jeralt, Byleth's father, dies.
• Shows up twice in Grand Theft Auto IV: At first when Niko chases Faustin onto the roof of the Perestroika club and kills him, and then at the end of the finale mission "A Revenger's Tragedy", which is appropriately the sadder of the two possible endings.

  • Quackity logs on after Tommy's death and starts chatting to Jack Manifold.   • In Episode 320, "Sleepy Stampy", it is raining as Stampy escapes from HitTheTarget's captivity and discovers that Barnaby got dognapped, though he manages to keep an optimistic tone for the outro.

In "Oil and Water", after being rebuffed by the Council, Vi leaves the building into pouring rain while Caitlyn follows her, and the following sad scene of Vi rejecting Caitlyn's offer of help (and any possible relationship between them) is done while they both stand dejectedly in the rain, raindrops running down Caitlyn's cheeks like tears.
• The Beatles episode "Good Day Sunshine" has Ringo thinking he's a jinx. It depresses him so much that a rain cloud appears over his glass and fills it with water. He even thinks he's the reason it starts raining during the boys' excursion to Coney Island.
• In a episode of The Boondocks, Huey finds himself on top of a hill as a friend of his is about to executed, just as it starts to rain as Huey falls to his knees and cries while praying for any miracle to save his friend.

  • Subverted in Episode 215. Pretty stares out of a window while gloomily talking about how love often ends in heartbreak, but the camera zooms out to show that it wasn't actually raining, there was just a guy on the roof pouring water out of a watering can in front of the window.
• Miraculous Ladybug: In the episode Cat blanc, when Marinette go to Agreste mansion and is forced to to break up with Adrien. Ironically, she has the same umbrella he lent to her at the very moment she fell in love with him in Origins.
  • In the special Miraculous World New York, it's raining when Adrien is leaving for France. He doesn't want to and Marinette neither. She tries to call him to make him stay but her phone battery is dead. She then decides to catch his car with a bike she just found, but the rain water makes the poor girl slip. The car disappears and Adrien doesn't hear Marinette saying "I love you".
• My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic has this in several episodes, including "Magical Mystery Cure" when Twilight laments the switching of her friend's cutie marks, "Rarity Takes Manehattan" when Rarity thinks her friends have abandoned her, and "Testing, Testing, 1-2-3" when Rainbow despairs of passing the Wonderbolts history test.
• In the Teacher's Pet movie, the rain starts to kick in a few scenes after Leonard kicks Human!Scott out, when both know that they'll never see each other again. The rain stops once (Towards the end of a musical number, no less) they decide in a Distant Duet that no matter what the circumstances, they need to be together again.
• In Winx Club Season 4 Episode 24 it starts raining after The Wizards of the Black Circle escape after having used the gift of life on a dead flower, taking away the Winx's only chance to save Nabu who had sacrificed himself to save the Earth fairies.
• In X-Men: Evolution's Episode 25, "Mindbender", Jean Grey is mind raped in her sleep by Mesmero right before he kidnaps and brainwashes her. Said Mind Rape sequence starts with her dreaming that she's trapped in a Circus of Fear and under the rain.
