General

  • When scanning people's thoughts in NEO, they have a handle to connect them to their thoughts, with plenty of the names being really hilarious and fitting.
  • croaky panic, as a whole. In the midst of all of Shibuya's established fashion brands, croaky panic is just a disgruntled old lady in a rainbow afro selling random clothes and accessories that just so happens to include Psych pins (many of which have Stylistic Suck-y designs).
    • The aforementioned rainbow afro is an item you can buy from the store, and in the description for it, the owner insists that it's her natural hairstyle.
    • While the description for most clothing pieces from other brands are written professionally, croaky panic clothing descriptions are all "written" by the owner in a brusque, casual manner. They usually lead into tangents where she wonders why tourists eat up some of the crappy souvenirs she has on sale.
  • Nagi's reaction for eating food she loves is to sport a Throat Light, as if she had somehow been blessed with enlightenment from whatever she consumed. On the other hand, if she eats food she doesn't like, her reaction is to stare directly at the player through Opaque Nerd Glasses.
  • One of the foods you can give to your party members in this game is Air in a Can. That's right, canned air. And the best part is that none of the Wicked Twisters dislikes eating (breathing?) it. In fact, Fret and Beat love it. The only one who doesn't like it is Minamimoto.
    • Also the fact that air somehow manages to fill up the fullness gauge. And not just slightly, like some of the dessert foods; each can somehow has over 400 Calories.
    • The best part? Air in a Can is NEO's equivalent to TWEWY's Brave+ capulets, being the best food item in the game for increasing your Style stat and nothing else.
  • All the descriptions of food and drinks in the Hachiko Cafe contain legal "disclaimers" denying any claims about the quality of the food. This becomes even more meaningful when you learn that the Hachiko Cafe is a reference to a Starbucks which is in exactly the same location in the real-life Scramble Crossing.
  • The new Infinity +1 Brand, Gatto Nero, is Shiki and Eri's fashion brand, and has three pin sets with entertaining attack animations. The Yearlong Ensemble isn't too much of a laugh, although it does have a Shrapnel Rounds psych that will litter the battlefield with suns. The other two have Mr. Mew as their attack animations. Catch-and-Release has a ghostly Mr. Mew pinning the enemy for Snare Trap while Charge Punch bombards them with furry fists of fury. The Black Cat Ensemble has Mr. Mew charging in lieu of a Lance Lunge spear, Mr. Mew-print Trick Cards, a giant Mr. Mew head for Meteor Strike, a pyramid of Mr. Mews for Piercing Pillar, a Mr. Mew horde for Spectral Swords, and a whirlpool of tiny Mr. Mew heads for Firestorm.
  • Landing Beatdrops during battle can yield some occasional gems:
    Minamimoto: Not half bad...
    ...
    Minamimoto: Ah?
    Minamimoto: You're an odd function!
    ...
    Minamimoto: It's all exponential!
    ...
    Fret: Nice one Na-girl!
    Nagi: Annoyed growlingnote
    ...
    Fret: Nice integration!
    Minamimoto: How derivative!
    ...
    Rindo: Did you see that!?
    Shoka: I did. And?
    ...
Fret: Did you see me just now!?
    ...
    Beat: Huh? Whachu say Pinny?
    ...
Shoka: So then what're you gonna do!?
    ...
    Nagi: Indeed...
    ...
    Minamimoto: As it always should.
    ...
    Minamimoto: Rise over run!
    Shoka: Who over what?
    ...
Nagi: Time to use my true power!
  • When you initiate a Killer Remix, the most recent character to land a hit for Beatdrop calls the rest of the team to action, with the team usually responding with enthusiasm. If Minamimoto is the leader of the attack, though, his call to "Converge!" is met with a lot of dismissiveness.
  • Almost anything that comes out of Fret's mouth, especially with Rindo and Nagi playing the Straight Man while Minamimoto is normally The Stoic.

Main Game

  • Fret's first conversation with Rindo in game has him making a pun of 104, telling him to go to "wunafo". When Rindo doesn't seem to laugh at his joke Fret spams their chat before Rindo puts in an emote that says, "STFU".
  • Saying you want ramen when Fret asks in the prologue has him say "In the mood for 'men, huh?"
  • A guy asks his girlfriend if she wants to go for ramen. When she doesn't respond he quickly says that curry was fine as well. Later on the girl wonders if her boyfriend is mad at her, but turns out his mouth is burning from the curry.
  • Trying to scan other players results in their thoughts being nothing but gibberish, represented by what is essentially keysmashing. After you Dive into one of the Variabeauties affected by Plague Noise, it does the usual red-to-green text box change for when their thoughts become more positive despite both being equally unintelligible.
  • Rindo and Fret's first encounter with a Reaper has this exchange, which becomes much funnier when taking into consideration a certain other game.
Rindo: ...Is it just me, or does that guy over there seem kinda creepy?
Fret: No, yeah. He's totally sus.
    • Later on, during Week 2, Day 2, the Twisters are searching for Neku and, during their search, Fret has this to say.
Fret: Speaking of, I found this guy while I was scanning a second ago. Said he saw someone acting kinda sus. It might be an imposter... but it might be Neku.
  • One of the hints for the mission is a purple skull, which Rindo finds by scanning a guy. He apparently finally got the tattoo of his dreams, even if his girlfriend didn't like it. The kicker? It's a stick-on tattoo.
  • Kubo dropping the bomb on Rindo and Fret telling them they're already dead. Fret... doesn't buy it as he believes it's just the Reapers trying to make them more invested in the game. Made funnier when you later discover Fret was right and Kubo knew it!
  • Shiba's reaction when reading Rindo and Fret's team name, "Rindo's Group". Rindo glares at Fret as he asks, "What did you do?" Fret had apparently set up the team behind Rindo's back, made Rindo the team leader, and just stuck with the default name because he got tired of typing.
    • Shoka brings up how stupid the name is and Rindo grumbles that they'll consider changing it later.
    • This later leads Fret to changing their name to "Wicked Twisters".
Rindo: ... You changed our name? Without telling me?
Fret: Yeah, 'cause I knew you'd love it! I mean, what's not to love?!
      Rindo: But it's so... (...cringey.)
  • Fret saying the game was like "AR", but instead of "Augmented Reality" it's "Awesome Reality". Rindo isn't as enthused.
    • As Fret asks Rindo if he looked cool in the fight, Rindo sarcastically tells Fret how cool he was, with Fret seemingly unaware that Rindo was insulting him.
Fret: I knew I was awesome!
      Rindo: Love that for you.
  • In order to summon the boss for the second day's mission, a player is required to stand in front of 104, then roar and beat their chest like a gorilla. Fret decides he's already done his part in solving the puzzle, and leaves this embarrassing last step to a less than enthusiastic Rindo.
  • When talking to Kanon on Week 1 Day 3, she mentions that the new Player has a "monstrous pin collection". Players of the first game are expecting this to be Neku. Rindo is expecting an ashen-skinned demonic bodybuilder with several pins stuck into his chest, brandishing several more in his hands like shuriken. It's really Nagi.
  • While trying to convince Rindo to let Nagi join the team, Fret makes a rather...unsophisticated impression of Minamimoto's mathematical jargon.
Fret: If Mr. Minami were here, he'd say something like, "We need to biggify our numbers 'cause math, kid!"
  • Actually meeting Nagi is a riot. Nagi is convinced Minamimoto is Tomonami, a character from the fictional game Elegant Strategy that she’s obsessed with, and immediately gushes over him. Rindo and Fret are not at all enthused at her antics. And when she shows off her pin collection... they're all just pins of Tomonami decorating her ITA-bagnote , which she got from CDs, Blu-rays, comic adaptations, anything she could get her hands on. In short...
Fret and Rindo: (...It's just a bunch of merch!)
  • The fact that Ryoji's customers on Day 5 experience such strong buyer's remorse over the pig plushies that it creates a huge swarm of Noise, forcing Rindo to go back in time and imprint a worse tagline onto Ryoji so people don't buy them.
  • When Fret first learns about Rindo's Mental Time Travel ability on Day 6, he tries to come up with a name for it, suggesting "Replay" because it sounds "sleek and modern". Rindo shoots him down, claiming he doesn't need a marketable title for it. The game, however, disagrees, as every time he uses it from that point on it's accompanied by a big "Replay!" graphic, and his Social Network status is updated to be Leader of the Wicked Twisters / Replayer just to rub it in. And in the Secret reports, Hanekoma immediately and consistently refers to it as Replay, as well!
  • On Day 7, Susukichi sends a challenge to the Wicked Twisters. In his attempt, though, with how big the guy's hands are, his texts are riddled with typos everywhere, and does minimal effort to correct them. He can't even send a good selfie to lead the team on, as he's either out-of-focus or barely even in the shot.
    Susukichi: YO!!! its ssukichi
Susukichi: yuo bros raedy to strat the Gaem or what!?
Susukichi: ill even let you mkae the frsit move lol
    Rindo: This is...barely legible.
    Fret: What is?
    Susukichi: now lets plzayh!
    Fret: Kweh?
    Rindo: Uh...?
    Susukichi: *play
Rindo: Wowww... At least he caught that last one.
Fret: Uh, do ya think we should tell 'ol Susy K about autocorrect?
    Rindo: Uh...?
    Fret: Kweh?
    Rindo: A selfie?
Susukichi: hnere i amn. come an get mwe! lmao
    Rindo & Fret:'(Both start laughing)
    Susukichi: *me
Fret: ...I get the feeling typing's not his strong suit.
Rindo: Must be those sausage fingers.
  • Week 2, Day 1 is a series of three riddles. The first two feature a bunch of Gatto Nero merch, which provides the answer to the third - a photo sticker. There's a marked displeasure in the Twisters' demeanour when they realize they need to strike a bunch of dorky poses in order to get this one done. The following conversation has an additional forced pause between speech bubbles:
    Fret: So... photo booth?
    Rindo: ...Yup.
    Fret: ...Shall we?
    Rindo: ...Yeah.
    • The three poses are "hands on hips", "smile and wave", and a spread-eagle "scare" pose. They end up playing Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide who's going to be the one, and Nagi throws down rock, landing her for the "scare" pose.
      Fret: Look at your faces!
Rindo: Now that it's over, I'd rather not.
  • Beat and Fret immediately get along due to their similar outgoing personalities and their speech pattern, which is noted by Rindo and Nagi.
    Nagi: Peas in a pod...
    Rindo:...an idiot pod.
  • Jupiter of the Monkey is not only still going strong three years later, it still has a devoted shop on Cat Street, and Keiichi the rapping clerk still works there. During a Reaper's task on W2D2, Fret ends up scanning him to figure out why the shop's not open... and it turns out Keiichi even thinks in rap.
  • On one branch of the Replay on W2D2, the Wicked Twisters pursue rumors of a "hooded figure" in Dogenzaka, on the grounds that "Neku" (read: Beat) was wearing one when he saved Rindo last week. This conversation ensues with a member of the Variabeauties they find outside Suzu Slurpz.
Fret: Seen any [hooded figures] around?
Variabeauty: Only like a million of 'em. They're always all "Do this!" "Do that!"
Fret: Or like, "Wear this!" "Fight that!"
    Variabeauty: Right? Literally the worst.
Fret: Hard agree - but we're not looking for the Reapers.
  • The very fact that you end up fighting a bunch of Mr. Mew dolls. Twice. And it turns out, Neku's not the only one who has trouble figuring out what Mr. Mew is supposed to be at first blush. Even funnier when later Neku actually correctly calls Mr. Mew a cat when he never did in the previous game.
    Beat: Giga Pig's back, yo!
Fret: Wait, I thought he was a bear?
    Shoka: Ugh, he's a cat!
  • In Week 2 Day 5 Rindo has enough of Shoka and decides to show his fangs by quipping that Shoka doesn’t know what Shiba’s plans are because it’s below her pay grade, it doesn’t take Shoka a second to rebound from it. Rindo looks surprised then annoyed.
  • The boss fight with Motoi has him crowdfund power-ups for his team in the middle of the battle, with the other Purehearts dropping what they're doing to donate to him. And if he ends up by himself? He can crowdfund replacement mooks, too!
  • At the start of Week 2, Day 7, we get a text from Kanon to the Twisters. Most of it is read as a Voice Over Letter, but it cuts back to Rindo for "See you soon Twisters, <3". Not only does this sound hilarious coming from Rindo, but he reads the heart emoji out loud as "heart emoji."
  • While most Dives touch on negative subjects with the target's internal dialogue, one late-game sidequest has the target go from anger towards his manager to just beatboxing across two waves of Noise.
    • Another features the victim of possession by an Easterraven Noise, which has been making people get into traffic accidents through a sudden compulsion to pick up shiny objects. The Dive features the Easterraven's thoughts, which consist entirely of a desire to hoard its precious shinies.
    • Still another Dive - namely, the last and hardest Dive of the main story - includes one of Nagi's fellow Elegant Strategy plays wanting to ditch her ancient history studies in favour of playing more EleStra. After the Dive is over, the rest of the team expresses their relief that she's alright... while Nagi, who has been unable to update EleStra since she arrived in the UG, bemoans the fact that she suffered a spoiler for the new chapter.
  • During the conversations between Rindo, Neku and Tsugumi, Beat got confused with the Tsugumi's explanation on how her power works. Shoka offers to reexplain to him later and dumb it down for him.
  • When the party figures out that the Plague Noise are visible under a blacklight, Beat's first idea on how to deal with a whole swarm of them is to have him run around really fast while shining the light so everyone else can fight them all at once. Fret of all people is the one to shoot it down.
  • Shoka keeps insinuating that Hishima does not take his job as a Reaper seriously and Fret points out in turn that Hishima looks like his main personality trait is to be serious. Hishima has the most serious looking character design of all the characters, to the point that he almost doesn't fit in with the game's aesthetic and looks more like he fits the aesthetic of modern fantasy Final Fantasy games like Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XV.
  • When Beat sees Sho again he still insists on calling him by his nickname "Tabooty". Cue Shoka, who's wholly uninitiated on the origin of said nickname, responding to it with a mixture of surprise and held-back laughter.
  • At the start of The Final Day', Rindo shares The Reveal about Kubo... and Neku points out that he doesn't know who "Kubo" is yet.
Rindo: Right... You haven't had the pleasure yet.
Fret: How would you describe him? Quickly?
    Shoka: An old asshole.
Nagi: (with a grin) I certainly cannot disagree.
    Neku: We oughta tell Shiba.
Beat: Dat Kubo's an old asshole?
  • In a Black Comedy sense, while Rindo is trying to find somebody to escort Rhyme to Dogenzaka on the Final Day'', he ultimately decides on Uzuki and sends her a message asking if she's familiar with Beat's sister. Uzuki replies that you could say that, wisely omitting the fact that the last time the two met, she erased her.
  • When Uzuki finds out that Minamimoto is still alive and active, she's so flabbergasted by said revelation that she doesn't even refer to Sho by name — instead she calls him "MATH MAN". It's even funnier since it implies that, even years after the events of the first game, Sho is still seen as a math-obsessed weirdo by his coworkers.
  • Beat is tasked to message Rhyme about Minamito's explanation about Rindo's powers and the Soul Povis. Beat, being Beat however, doesn't remember what "Pi-Face" is talking about and Neku offers to tell him what to write in his message.
  • During the climax montage, Coco is being overwhelmed by Plague Noise when she's suddenly saved by Minamimoto. His greeting?
Minamimoto: Zero seven seven three four.note  (promptly walks off)
Coco: Ew. ...Hey! Don't just spout off numbers and walk away, you jerk!
  • After Shoka reveals she set herself up for erasure since it's preferable to staying a Reaper, Joshua decides to throw her and Rindo a bone by reviving her in the RG. But since it's Joshua, his method of doing this is to make Shoka spontaneously disappear and challenge Rindo to find her...somewhere in the city.
Joshua: I put her back on the street with the other stray cats. Find her, and you win.
    • Rindo's reaction to Joshua's occupation when he first introduces himself deserves special mention:
Joshua: You may not know this, but I'm Shibuya's Composer.
      Shoka: Wait—the Composer!?
Rindo: (checks his phone) So you... write music or something?
    • And after several weeks of searching, Rindo and Shoka bump into each other again at the Scramble Crossing. As in, they literally bump into each other in the middle of the crosswalk. And before they even have a chance to say hello, they realize they're in the middle of traffic and have to scamper over to the statue of Hachiko for safety. Apparently, Shoka's had trouble adjusting to physically existing in the RG and not being able to phase through the crowds after spending years as a Reaper.
    • Rindo says that Shoka should have gotten in touch earlier...and Shoka fires back that she did, but Rindo just didn't check his friend requests. Ironically, Rindo would have found her earlier if he was still preoccupied with his phone.
      Rindo: My bad.
      Shoka: FanGO, too.
      Rindo: Seriously? Oh, shit...
  • Beat misses Neku's grand return to the RG and his reunion with Shiki. Why? Because he's busy getting ready to beat up a creep hitting on his sister.

Another Day

  • These versions of the characters, despite seemingly staying in the RG, still have access to psychs, scanning, Noise, and other UG stuff, to the point that getting Reapers' Romp stickers involves fighting Cantus forms. No one questions any of this.
  • Hishima talking like a booth babe and overall being more energetic and excitable.
  • Kanon attempts to sell the party a horrendously overpriced encyclopedia, which Rindo remarks only a complete moron would fall for buying... so naturally, Fret immediately agrees to buy it.
Shoka: It's no use. He only has ears for her now.
Rindo: That only leaves us one thing to do...Imprint! "Guidebook"! "No"!
Fret: Whoa! I...I don't...I don't want to buy this!
    • The way Rindo Imprints on Fret is like a dog owner telling their dog not to do something.
  • At one point, Neku and Beat feel like they aren't as involved with the plot as everyone else so they decided to play a round of Tin Pin Slammer. Rindo, Fret, Nagi, and Shoka respond by commenting on how huge it was three years ago.
  • When meeting Tsugumi, she and Nagi immediately start catching up, which swiftly turns into them going back and forth to prove who is a bigger fan of Ishimoto, the guitarist for the band the group is trying to get tickets for. It then escalates to Tsugumi finding out the reason they're playing the game is because they don't have tickets, then denying to stamp their card without putting up a fight. And right after the battle, she declares Nagi the bigger fan before stamping their card and seemingly dying. Nagi mourns her loss before declaring that the group must carry on, Rindo asks if she's really dead, and cue a cut to Tsugumi hiding in the distance, perfectly alive and well.
  • When meeting Ayano as part of the Reapers' Romp, she and Shoka immediately start bickering like siblings, and Shoka then gets angry with her for taking her pet iguana for the sake of keeping up her aesthetic.
Shoka: I know your whole aesthetic is really important to you but... Stop! Stealing! Iggy! You can't just let my iguana ride around on your shoulder when you go out!
Ayano: Oh, don't be selfish. It won't kill you to let me play with him every once in a while. Besides, he likes it! Don't you, Iggy? Yes you do, you good boy.
    • Also in the same conversation, Nagi mentions offhand that she's raising ten snakes.
    • In the fight against Iris Cantus Alpha, Ayano will start with her Desperation Attack, but instead of trapping everyone but Shoka and Rindo, Shoka is the only character who will get trapped and like in the original fight, not freeing the trapped character fast enough will get them a slap from Ayano. The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry indeed.
  • When meeting Shiba as part of the Reaper Romp’s bonus round, Rindo wonders if Shiba lost his way to the club.
  • It's implied that the Minamimoto joining the party in Another Day is the same one from the main storyline's universe, here to research the power of Dissonance. And he has enough spare time to enjoy the concert while he's here.
Minamimoto: (I still have a nonzero t value. Maybe I'll go check out the show.)
    • On that same note, Rindo seems to have somehow figured out that Minamimoto is a bad guy from another dimension (which makes more sense if you find and defeat his alternate universe counterpart) but doesn’t care if the world gets destroyed because he got to see the concert.
