Proof that the remaining 10% is worth a visit to the Gate for.

Fullmetal Alchemist has loads of material to make good stories with... we're still waiting for Fullpetal Botanist, though.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Fullmetal Alchemist fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

  • Comments: Excellent writing and characterization. The author also writes for the Harry Potter and Cardcaptor Sakura fandoms but is currently writing for Fullmetal Alchemist. The author also has two or three FMA/HP crossovers. In between fic updates, the author whips out some of the best-written one-shots.

  • Comments: If you're searching for well-written Fem!Ed x Roy fanfiction, but don't know where to look, then search no more. This author practically specializes in writing about the two of them, and a majority of her fics have ranged from heartbreaking to hilariously adorable. She's also written a bit about EdWin and normal RoyEd, so if you like any of these pairings, her fanfics won't fail to disappoint! (Warning: Several of her fics are rated M.)

Anything by Laetans
  • Recommended by: MEWtiful
  • Comments: The writer has written eight stories for Fullmetal Alchemist: some Warm and Fuzzy, some bitterly sad. (To this day, February Thirteenth is the only fanfiction I have ever read that has managed to make me cry.) Whatever the case, you know that the characters' relationships are going to be explored beautifully. Heck, if it's a long story there may even be development, an accomplishment that is the holy grail of a media swimming with OOC stories. There is sex, but none of the stories are Lemon Fic; this does give them an "M" rating.
    • NOTE: For reasons unknown, all of Laetans' FMA stories are gone. Wither the author pulled them down his/herself, or... Which is a pity; this troper enjoyed those stories.

  • Comments: Excellent writing and characterization. There's great detail on the relationship between Roy and Ed in almost every fic. A lot of it is both dark and/or rated M, however.

  • Comments: As a general warning, this author writes mostly Roy/Ed, so if you can't stand that kind of stuff you may want to give this one a pass. If you CAN stand it, give it a look. The writing style is wonderful, especially with descriptions. Special mention goes to the author's current project, The Saffron Soul. I could go on for hours about how wonderful this story is, how interesting the plot is, how vivid the pictures it paints are, how each chapter has me on the edge of my seat... it's just awesome. Really.

  • Comments: Warning: Not for the faint of heart. This author writes some of the most heart-wrenchingly depressing stuff out there, and most of it is Ed/Envy - but realistic. Which mostly ends up just about as badly as you'd expect. Of special note is their pairing-less AU Hero of the People, in which Envy and Wrath are the Elric brothers.

  • Comments: Her Demon Alchemist series (aka the crazy!Ed verse) is already recced below. Other works tend to be more humorous, and even that much Darker and Edgier take on the series is pretty funny. Tends to write post-canon and canon pairings, with one series solely populated by absurd ships (and RoyEd). Themes common to all stories: Roy and his subordinates' ultimate goal is to take over the world; causing explosions is the Elric way; Ed and Winry (whether as a pairing or friends) can communicate through pointed staring, a superpower they abuse to bicker in public.

Anything by Gamma Cavy
  • Recommended by: Tiamat
  • Comments: Her Even the Wizards universe, (A Harry Potter/Brotherhood&manga crossover) is to die for. Everyone is in character, very much themselves, and taking no nonsense, and this troper often finds herself hearing the voices of Greed, Ling, Ed, Mustang, and Armstrong when she reads the sections with them. Cavy has a positive knack for the attitudes, and refreshingly unique ideas, adding such gems as the talking Gate (it makes sense in context) or Ling's side-splitting idea of a distraction.

    General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.
Toy Soldier by roseveare (also in fanfiction.net)

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Roy Mustang and Ed get a lesson in what it means to bring a 12 year old into the military after Edward falls into the hands of terrorists.
  • Comments: I know what the synopsis sounds like but believe me, it has nothing to do with the tired "Ed gets kidnapped by terrorists and Roy worriedly comes to the rescue" plot that has been rehashed so many times in fma fic. Ed is released as soon as the fic starts, and the way Ed regards any rough treatment suffered as a humiliation to pay back tenfold, gamely and immediately moving to take the criminals down, rings much more true to his canon personality. It's written from Roy's pov, and his musings on Ed—aware that a child working for the military is incredibly wrong but also aware that Ed's unequivocably damn good at it—are really lovely.
  • Seconded by jinjoo88. The author's other FMA fic "Fullmetal's Company" is also well worth a read. Ed is placed in a position where he is the highest ranking officer in a combat situation.

  • Synopsis: An assignment to snow country under Colonel Mustang is bad enough for the damper it puts on the Elrics' search for the Stone, but downed supply lines lead to cut rations, and Ed discovers that he can't take the deprivation as well as he'd like to pretend.
  • Comments: I feel like we, as a fandom, don't talk NEARLY enough about the fact that Ed NEEDED to eat and sleep twice as much to keep his brother alive, I'd take like a 100 more fics just like this.

  • Synopsis: Following the manga-verse, we explore how the plot might've changed if Al had died while they tried to resurrect their mother.
  • Comments: Given the premise, you'd think this would be a dark, depressing series. You would be wrong. • Synopsis: AU. The FMA characters are brought to a room to view FMA Brotherhood. How will they react to seeing their future? Can they change what is to come? Or will they make the same mistakes?
  • Comments: This is worth a try even if you're majorly opposed to 'fictional characters exposed to their series' like this troper is. The author has constructed several mechanisms to keep the suspense up and keep the flow of the story from settling into the tired 'show a scene/characters snark about it' groove. In particular, she makes the characters feel the pain of any injury happening to them onscreen. Also, worth it for complex character interactions in between viewing sessions. And Izumi/General Armstrong bonding.

He Who Searches For Himself by Yuuki Hikari
  • Recommended by: Jhall934
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Standing up and moving forwards feels a lot more like picking yourself up and trudging onwards. This is a story of Edward Elric trying to get home from to Amestris from Germany, and Alphonse's quest to help bring him back.
  • Comments: She began writing this right after the original series ended. So it takes into account the events of the anime but not COS. It is good because it has an interesting plot that adds on to the events that occurred throughout the original anime. It also does justice to all of the characters. She does have some OCs but they are relevant to the plot as well as to Germany at that time. She also gives some much-needed development to many of the characters, Winry, for example, becomes more like her Brotherhood counterpart and isn't restricted to the sidelines and Edward's relationship with Hohenheim is touched upon very well. Also, the situation concerning Alphonse is handled well. To sum it up, this fanfiction is a good read for those who didn't like COS. It has not been updated for awhile but I do think she will finish it. The 40+ chapters that are currently out are definitely worth reading.

    • Revived as of 2022, and being updated on Archive of our Own as well!

  • Comments: It’s impossible to really sum up this story other than to say it will take a solid month (at least) to read it all the way through but it’s totally worth it. Incredibly well written.

  • Synopsis: All is one and one is all. The Elrics discover how painfully literal that statement happens to be with a little help from someone who just happens to be passing through. For better or worse.
  • Comments: This is a strange story. Sirensoundwave sets up this weird concept where Truth/The Gate is Elric's father...and mother. Kinda a fix-it fic that dives down the rabbit hole. A good example of the dark humor, angst, and drama that seems pretty standard with the author's fics. Hard to explain but for something COMPLETELY different, check it out.

Stock Market Crash by VIKAN
  • Recommended by: LongLiveHumour
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Stranded in the middle of the Eastern Desert, Roy Mustang must try to get himself and a concussed Edward across it safely before he completely loses his mind.
  • Comments: A very well-crafted story with excellent character voices, an unflinching perspective on Colonel Mustang, and despite its grim subject matter, a sense of humour.

Team Players by maryh10000

  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: How team Mustang came together. They weren't always a team, but they were always team players.
  • Comments: The author used to be in the military herself, so the protocols and terminology are spot on, so far as this troper can tell. The writing style may seem dry at first, but there are a lot of unexpectedly wry or touching moments. Best of all, she has a better handle on every member of Team Mustang than almost anybody on FFN, and gives as much respect and affection to Falman or Breda as to Roy and Riza; she incorporates several non-canon (but canon-compliant) notions about their various pasts, goals, religious views, and so on, but she keeps it so in-character and fascinating that I've started taking some of them as canon.

  • Synopsis: Twenty-five years ago ... Chris Mustang is having a very bad month. As if that wasn't enough, her estranged big brother seems to have gotten himself in an auto accident, and some nut decided to make her guardian of his four-year-old brat.
  • Comments: Whilst sex and violence take a backseat in this story it is nonetheless one of the few genuinely mature fics out there, dealing with adult problems from a very realistic and heartfelt perspective. A joy from start to finish, with snappy, genuinely funny, dialogue and strong charaterisation. If you're at all interested in Mustangs childhood with Mdm Christmas then this is a must-read.

  • Comments: A promising story still in its beginning stages. It is currently playing out as canon with Winry's presence but the author has stated it will eventually break from canon. Their are noticeable grammar and spelling mistakes here and there but it isn't detrimental to the rest of the fic.

  • Comments: Essentially, Total Drama with Fullmetal Alchemist characters. The comedy works surprisingly well, and the author's takes on the characters are really funny, with moments that are downright inspired. The one major con is the author's blatant crushes on Jean Havoc and Roy Mustang. Then again, that could still be a pro depending on who you are.

  • Comments: A superbly written case fic (a sad rarity in the fandom), including elements of sickfic. Unexpectedly becomes one of the best depictions of Roy and Ed's relationship I've ever read- keeps close to canon characterizations and avoids being overly saccharine while still conveying the depth of their complicated emotions about each other. Explores the themes of responsibility and mercy and the moral quandary of Ed's position as a minor in the military in a mature and interesting way.

The House of Smex by multiple authors
  • Recommended by: Pepper Jak
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Various
  • Synopsis: The stories in the archive generally take place after Ed and Masuta get back to Amestris and details the evolution of the relationship between Roy, Riza, Ed, Al, and Masuta. This story is a spin-off of The Alter!Series (see entry in general fics above), so I urge you to read that first. There are no really solid, over-arching plots in the Main Archive, which mostly contains "a day in the life" drabbles (to short stories) about the five and is categorized by subject and not chronology. If a story falls into a certain part of the general timeline, it is noted in the story's lj entry. There is a Plot Archive, where specific story arcs, often following their own canon, are listed.

Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance by spookybee
  • Recommended by: jinjoo88
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Roy/Riza, secondary Edward/Winry
  • Synopsis: "I'm not the only one who thinks this is weird, right? I mean, when we first met him, Edward Elric was a little kid in a wheelchair, missing an arm and a leg, and now he's managed to get his arm back, he's of legal drinking age, and he's getting married." It is kind of weird, Riza agrees, although it really shouldn't be. After all, settling down and getting married is what men Edward's age usually do. And yet it feels so incongruous for Edward Elric, who saw the Gate three times, punched a god in the face, and was one of the brightest alchemists Riza had ever met, to be doing something so normal. It would be like the Brigadier General getting married, or her. She has to suppress a giggle at the thought.
  • Comments: Some Royai fics treat the fraternization laws that prevent their relationship as trivial, but this does not. The main focus is on Hawkeye and her struggle between her growing feelings and her role as Roy's conscience.

Even the Wizards Must Pay their Due by Gamma Cavy
  • Recommended by: Tiamat Dragon Queen
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Synopsis: For some reason, Ed and Al were visiting Hogwarts, probably to ask Dumbledore where they could find Nicholas Flamel to ask him about the Philosophers Stone. While Ed is in Dumbledore's office, and Al is waiting outside due to being unable to fit the staircase Dumbledore, being a Magnificent Bastard tries to use Legilimens on Ed. Unfortunately for him, Ed's been to the Gate of Truth, and Truth doesn't take kindly to people trying to snoop at the True knowledge. As a result, Dumbledore gets pulled through Ed's personal Gate and doesn't get anything out of it, while Truth makes a copy of Dumbledore's memories up to that point, and gives that copy to Ed. While Dumbles was encountering Truth, Ed didn't take kindly to having his mind poked at. By the time Dumbledore is freed from what used to be his desk, cabinets, pensive, and wall, as well as had his broken nose fixed, Ed and Al are long gone and have taken five-year-old Harry back to Amestris with them. And from there things unfold.
  • Comments: Ed's narrative adds dry humor to everything, beginning with his wondering if Petunia ware a failed Horse Chimera, and continuing into the Give Mustang a Headache Game. The plot is well thought out, Truth is awesome, and clearly up to something. Dumbledore is not only a Magnificent Bastard, but a Manipulative Bastard Harry gets a loving family with two older brothers, a loving (if somewhat crazy) mother who will teach him how to defend himself, a silent but loving father, and a plethora of honorary family in the form of Team Mustang. Gamma actually figured out how Fullmetal Alchemist could take place in the same world as Harry Potter without anyone knowing about Amestris and all the neighboring countries, and it has a spark of originality in a crossover that this troper hasn't seen since Laora's fic Penance. Bonus points for the fact that the wizarding world knew a little about Xerxes, although not as anything more than a myth - at least until Ed turns up fitting the description of the golden people, AKA the Xerxesians.

Equivalence by notnecessarilyinbetween
  • Recommended by: Gamma Cavy
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: D.Gray-Man
  • Synopsis: Allen had the same stupid height complex he did, and the same stupid naivete of Al. That was it, Ed was adopting him as an unofficial Elric. It was only fair. (This is a story blending the FMA manga and anime versions, with the Anime origin of homunculi and other side of the gate, but manga Truth and Briggs. It is not the usual FMA crossover, as getting back to Amestris is rather simple once they figure out how, but then things take a turn for the strange when an investigation on the Ark calls Truth into play, with a task for the three Elric brothers.)
  • Comments: The grammar is not the best, although it does improve as the story goes on, and the entertainment value is worth it, especially when Armstrong is on the scene.

  • Synopsis: Edward Elric knew one thing for sure, and that was that he was bored in a dull world. And finds a chance to go home..at a price...
  • Comments: Note, however, that the FMA parts of the story are taken from the anime-verse, NOT the manga-verse.

Penance by Laora
  • Recommended by: Purplequeen15
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Synopsis: The Gate was opening; the black arms stretched toward him and Pride. Ed knew he had no say in the matter. He would be pulled to this parallel dimension, alternate universe—whatever it was—and Amestris would be left to die. Truth merely grinned.
  • Comments: One of the few crossovers I've read that actually makes sense rather than being pure crack. It takes place in mangaverse chapter 105/Order of the Phoenix, so here there be spoilers. Ed and Al get pulled through the gate (like all FMA crossovers) and arrive in a strange place that seems to defy every law of nature: Number 12 Grimmauld Place. However, someone (something?) else arrived with them... A great story, though a few chapters are a bit slow because of exposition. No fluff.
