"Progress demands sacrifice."

A vicious Indian separatist leader who draws inspiration from his claimed blood ancestors, the Hoysala kings of old, and seeks to bring about insurrection and civil war to restore his people to their former glory. After splintering from the national army some time ago, he has been searching for rare trinkets and artifacts and selling them off to bankroll his expanding militia and weapons purchases; his latest, the Tusk of Ganesh, puts him into conflict with Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, who are also after the same treasure.

  • Badass Boast: As he finally starts going berserk, he screams, "I will die a thousand deaths before I let you win!" Given that he firmly believes in reincarnation, that's not an idle threat.
  • Badass Bookworm: According to Nadine, Asav was a doctor before becoming a warlord.
  • Beard of Evil: A short graying beard, and a malicious terrorist.
  • Big Bad: Of The Lost Legacy.
  • Bollywood Nerd: Evil variant. Apart from being a former doctor, he's also quite knowledgeable about ancient Hoysala society. That said, he doesn't know as much about the mythology of his people as he claims.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: His finishing move has him snapping Chloe's neck with no mechanical leverage.
  • Church Going Villain: More like Hindu Villain. That said, Chloe and Nadine know more about the context of Hindu myths than he does.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Specifically, to fellow war criminal Zoran Lazarevic; while Zoran was in the classic mold of a dictator, Asav is very much a terrorist. Both feel no regret about sacrificing their own men, but Lazarevic does it largely to ensure compliance and punish subordinates, while Asav does it to "cleanse" them in the hopes that they will one day be reincarnated in a more useful form. Each also has their own rationale for their actions — Lazarevic admired Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot for being willing to destroy whoever stood in their way, by any means necessary; Asav, however, tells of how the Hoysala kings would execute all those unwilling to fight and choke the aqueducts with their blood, serving as an inspiration for those who would fight and purging the weak from society. On a more cosmetic note, Lazarevic could not stop yelling, while Asav, for the most part, rarely raises his voice.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Subverted. One of his soldiers said he has a wife but he wears no rings and doesn't mention her at all. He also is said to had a thing for Nadine but he seemed be over her now that he tried to kill her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He is visibly angered when Chloe offers to help him find the Tusk of Ganesh, seeing her actions as just war-profiteering. He also doesn't seem to think to highly of "thieves". It ultimately becomes pointless later on in the game.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Asav is baffled when the final puzzle to unlock the Tusk of Ganesh spares Chloe, as he expected the mechanism to be a human sacrifice. Chloe explains to him that Ganesh's dismemberment, which the puzzle was re-enacting, was a willing Heroic Sacrifice and not a weaker god brought down by a stronger opponent — in fact, Ganesh could have beat his opponent effortlessly, but instead allowed himself to be mutilated by Shiva's axe so as to not dishonor the gift his own father had given to Parashurama. Asav is briefly left speechless, unable to reconcile the idea with his survival-of-the-fittest worldview.
    Asav: That makes no sense.
Chloe: It wouldn't. Not to a selfish prick.
  • Evil Poacher: Along with shelves of Indian antiquities, Asav's headquarters also has crates full of tiger skins and elephant tusks (both animals currently on the endangered species list), suggesting that Asav has even turned to poaching and ivory dealing to fund his insurrection.
  • Evil Reactionary: He wants to restore India to the way it was back when the old Hoysala kings were in charge: war, bloodshed and Human Sacrifice aplenty.
  • Faux Affably Evil: After he catches Nadine and Chloe, both of whom have plummeted from a great height after his men caught up to them, he says "That was quite a fall. You had me worried." Then he hauls them away at gunpoint to find the Tusk.
  • Final Boss: Of The Lost Legacy.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: A ruthless warlord who wears a rather large pair of eyeglasses. He whips them off in the final battle after they get cracked. Nadine states that he wears them not because he needs them, but to make himself look smarter and weaker to others.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Asav ultimately gets blown up by the very warhead he was planning to detonate in a populated city to ignite his revolution.
    • Knowing he's about to die, he makes one final attempt to twist the knife in Chloe by pointing out that his death will likely inspire more militants to take up his cause; while it does get under her skin, she throws his words back in his face ("it's like you said — progress demands sacrifice"), forcing him to realize the meaning of his legacy of terrorism: even if the Hoysala empire rises again, it won't be his to rule, and that his struggle for personal glory was worthless.
Asav: (Bitterly) Oh, you smug little shit.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The first time you fight him as Chloe, you're unable to damage him and can only survive long enough for Nadine to recover and join the fight. Even then, he still bests both Chloe and Nadine and throws them both through a wall and into an aqueduct.
  • Hypocrite: For all his talk of national pride and regaining his ancient culture, Asav is quick to sell said culture to anyone for weapons in his war. He also calls Chloe out for wanting to profit off of war at the beginning of the game, but later it is revealed that he is giving the Tusk to Orca in exchange for a bomb that will kill innocent civilians.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: As shown in the concept art, Asav is patterned very closely after Usman Ally, but his beard, full head of hair and glasses all make it difficult to tell.
  • Made of Iron: In the final fight, he is capable of taking a considerable beating from both Nadine and Chloe, and all it does is just piss him off. It takes a bomb getting dropped on his leg to stop him.
  • Motive Rant: Delivers one to Chloe when he's confronting her outside a Hoysala aqueduct, and again on top of the train in the final level.
  • Neck Snap: Exaggerated: Asav is incredibly strong and exploits weakness the instant he can in combat, so any death screen with him — save failing to grab his gun while he's distracted or if Chloe's fighting him one-on-one on the train — will feature him grabbing Chloe or Nadine and cracking their spine like a stalk of celery.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: He's considerably less flamboyant and theatrical than most previous Uncharted villains, being very direct and to the point. That said, he's still not above Bond Villain Stupidity.
  • No True Scotsman: At some point he becomes convinced the only reason Chloe is so clever is because she is part Indian. This despite Asav requiring an American "expert" to lead him to the Tusk and even Nadine eventually grasping more about ancient Hoysala culture than him, a full-blooded Indian.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Befitting an ethnic separatist, he has nothing but contempt for the mixed-race Chloe, seeing her as emblematic of the new kingdom's weakness and sometimes calling her and Nadine "half-breeds" or "mongrels". Later he dismisses the potential victims of his bomb as "peasants".
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: He speaks admiringly of the Hoysala's older, more war-like practices, and blames their more progressive reforms for weakening and ruining the empire.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: A Thief's End establishes Nadine as an incredible hand-to-hand fighter vastly superior to both Nathan and Sam to the point of being able to easily fight both of them at once and winnote . Asav, despite being a relatively unassuming-looking, bespectacled older man, is able to easily best Nadine in combat and even take on both her and Chloe at once and do remarkably well, only losing their final fight because Chloe and Nadine use teamwork against him. He's also a lot stronger than he looks, given how he effortlessly punches open a (admittedly likely very weak) brick wall in the middle of a monologue just to get a better view of what's on the other side.
  • Rasputinian Death: He gets pummeled repeatedly by Chloe and Nadine, then crushed by his own warhead, then dropped several hundred feet when his train falls off a collapsed bridge, before finally being blown up by said warhead.
  • Satanic Archetype: He has a lot of incredibly Satanic elements surrounding his character, surprisingly. A diabolical warlord and cunning tactician who plans to overthrow the Indian government to establish a dictatorship, he's a misanthropic terrorist and Straw Nihilist who corrupts people into joining his insurgency, derives a pleasure in hurting others and is very soft-spoken at that and, adding to the archetype is his lust for human sacrifices and the fact that he plans to carry out a mass genocide against innocent people just for the joy of it, as well as the overall shtick of his plan being very Nazi-esque. There's even the fact that aside from being a former doctor and his bigotry, his past is quite unclear, adding to a Nothing Is Scarier element that sort of makes him feel like he's Ambiguously Human, alongside the fact that he dresses like an ordinary person and his utter depravity.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Even more so than Marlowe. Asav rarely raises his voice above a low murmur, but every word spoken is a concealed threat. When he finally begins screaming and cursing, it's a sign of just how far he's been pushed.
  • South Asian Terrorists: The leader of a bunch of Indian insurgents. And in his case, Rank Scales with Asskicking.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Asav is deceptively unassuming and ordinary-looking, especially compared to previous Uncharted villains, dressing very plainly and even wearing a large pair of eyeglasses. He looks more like a college professor rather than a ruthless warlord powerful enough to hand Nadine her ass in a hand-to-hand fight. A couple lines of dialogue from Nadine suggest this is an image he deliberately cultivates so his enemies will underestimate him.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Begins to lose control of himself the more Chloe and Nadine humiliate him and decimate his forces. When they fight him on the train, he's been reduced from a cunning tactician to a furious, bellowing, desperate lunatic, disregarding their warnings that the bridge is out and screaming at them to fight.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: After acquiring the Tusk of Ganesh, as a "reward" for leading him to the treasure he leaves Chloe, Nadine, and Sam behind in the temple to drown rather than simply shooting them. Granted, he also expresses religious reasons for not killing them inside the temple, though it's unclear if he's being sincere or just snarking at them.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Ends up screaming this during his Villainous Breakdown at Chloe and Nadine for screwing up his plans.
Asav: You've ruined everything! EVERYTHING! My cleansing would have been beautiful! Why didn't you just die?!
  • Would Hit a Girl: And does hit them, as both Nadine and Chloe can attest.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: He delivers a choke-slam to Nadine during their first fight.

     Meenu

Meenu

Played By: Tierra Rorls

A local girl Chloe befriends at the beginning of the game. She runs a stand in the marketplace while her father is away with the Indian Army fighting Asav.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: She not only runs a business, and pretty shrewdly at that, but she is also a bit of a thief and is able to distract some guards to help Chloe, without even being asked.
  • Call-Back: Chloe compliments her pickpocket skills in the same way Sully complimented Nate when they first met.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: She tries stealing Chloe's Ganesh sculpture when Chloe won't sell it to her.
  • Morality Pet: Acts as this to Chloe, as she mentions the market place specifically before deciding to stop Asav's bomb.
