The biggest Ensemble Dark Horse among the fandom is this private school majorly attended by kids from rich families, which offers education from kindergarten to university level. Hyotei's strength lies in its strict stratification and merit system, which prioritizes ability only rather than emotion; the tennis club has 200 members selected through very strict methods devised by the coach and music teacher Taro Sakaki.

    General
  • Breakout Villain: Their popularity eventually had them evolve into Seigaku's most prominent rivals, to the point where they were faced a second time in the Nationals (over Shishigaku which was Tachibana's former team).
  • Evil Counterpart: Initially intended to be this to Seigaku, until their portrayals evolved into Foils of Seigaku instead. Their teams have Polar Opposite Captains (Atobe-Tezuka), Teen Geniuses (Oshitari-Fuji), an acrobatic player (Mukahi-Eiji), The Big Guy Gentle Giants (Kabaji-Kawamura).
  • First-Name Basis: While Oshitari and Gakuto are the only double pairs with this mutual dynamic, Shishido also calls Ohtori by his given name without honorifics. Gakuto and Shishido also have this, as they also were Childhood Friends.
  • Foil: Many of their team and personality dynamics contrast Seigaku's in any way.
    • Atobe-Tezuka: While both are natural leaders determined to take their teams into the Nationals, Atobe is arrogant, egocentric, calculating, and flamboyant, in contrast to Tezuka's calm, stoic, and serious persona.
      • Atobe and Ryoma share a number of similarities as well. In terms of demeanor, the two of them are almost equally cocky and impulsive. The difference is that Atobe has been established as Hyotei's leader for some time whereas Ryoma is still developing as Seigaku's pillar of support.
    • The Silver Pair (Ohtori-Shishido) has two:
      • To Inui-Kaidoh pair: Both are teams recently put together before the match and work surprisingly well together (Inui realized he and Kaidoh had to step up as the other doubles pair on the team, while Shishido only had the spot as Ohtori's partner when he was back into the team), Kaidoh and Shishido are Hot-Blooded in contrast to Inui and Ohtori respectively. Both pairs are also a Sempai/Kohai partnership.
      • To the Golden Pair: By that point, both doubles pairs have developed deep bonds as doubles partners, to the point both Ohtori and Eiji have difficulty playing against their respective doubles partners in New Prince of Tennis.
    • Gakuto-Eiji: Both are redheads, Volley and Acrobatic Play specialists with Stamina weakness (Eiji trains to correct this, however). While Eiji is boisterous and playful, Mukahi is more assertive and rude.
    • Kaidoh-Hiyoshi: Both are appointed as future captains of their teams, with quiet personalities and methodic training routines, Kaidoh being more Hot-Blooded.
  • Rich Kids: Implied this about the majority of the students at Hyotei. More notably Atobe, who is revealed in a special that his family was the one who upgraded all the services at the school (Five-Stars meals, Gym equipment, computers and library expansions, and the tennis courts).

    Keigo Atobe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_atobe_1525.jpg
Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (JP), Yuri Lowenthal (EN), Angel Balam (Latin American Spanish/Venezuelan dub), Arturo Sial Vidal (Latin American Spanish/Mexican dub)

The only son and heir to one of the richer families in Japan, Atobe lived a good part of his life in England and only returned to Japan when it was his turn to attend junior high. Narcissistic, arrogant, self-centered, and loud, Atobe isn't only brawn and no brains though—he's also an excellent leader, multi-talented, as well as quite nobler than one would expect from a rich kid who seems to be just the male version of a Rich Bitch in his first appearance. Atobe might have a pretty face, and hordes of fangirls in the story, but once you see through the facade, you can expect an excellent match and a quite noble rival.

  • The Ace: The most obvious example in the series. He's the Student Council President, The Captain of the tennis club as well as its best player, is a good student who also happens to be insanely rich and multilingual, has a horde of fangirls and his own cheering section, knows how to pilot a helicopternote , and is an extremely Large Ham. Atobe also loves the limelight.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the games and the manga, he's blond; but he's purple-silver-haired in the anime.
  • Attention Whore: He needs to have big acclaim wherever he goes. He even brought Hyotei's chant recorded to the U-17 camp.
  • Big Entrance: Atobe is a big fan of these.
    • He usually likes to have the entire Hyotei team chant his name until he throws his jacket to the air, snaps his fingers, and finishes off with his catchphrase and more uproaring cheers.
    • He once prepared a skydiving entrance from his private jet, and then land on his school's rooftop... only to remember that it was a weekend.
    • For the exhibition match against Rikkaidai, he arrives skydiving and opening a parachute with the word "King". Then has a perfect landing on a platform, where fireworks are launched at the snap of his fingers. His friends and Yukimura are used to this, apparently.
  • Big Fancy House: No doubt about that, given how rich he is.
  • Bishie Sparkle: One of the biggest "offenders".
  • The Captain: Captain of Hyoutei's tennis club.
  • Catchphrase: "Ore-sama no bigi no yoi na!" ("Be awed at the sight of my prowess") and its variations.
  • Charm Point: His mole. Lampshaded in-universe as one of his Image Songs, "Charm Point Wa Naki Bokuro", is about how his "gorgeous" "teardrop mole" is considered one of his best features.
  • Chick Magnet: Because of his wealth, good looks, and ability to do just about anything well, he has a legion of fangirls who fawn over him and he loves it.
  • Childhood Friend: With Kabaji. Their official bios state that they went to the same kindergarten, and even while still at Elementary School, Kabaji still followed Atobe's directions.
  • Gorgeous George: What he spends his allowance on? Treating his club members.
  • Hyper-Awareness: His biggest strength lies in his "Insight", which allows him to spot his rival's weak spots and blindspots ("World of Ice"). Later, his "Insight" evolves into "Atobe Kingdom", which literally allows him to see in X-Ray Vision.
  • Idle Rich: He is insanely rich (to the point of arriving on a private jet and parachuting to school), and is often confused by the middle-class lifestyle (in Oshitari's section of the fanbook, Atobe expresses confusion at why people have to do mundane chores without a servant).
  • I Gave My Word:
    • In the anime, he grabs the shaving machine from Ryoma and cuts his own hair, as they bet. In the manga, however, Ryoma shaved him while he was still unconscious.
    • In The New Prince of Tennis, he's intent on following through on his promise to Tezuka to carry the load as The Leader of the middle schoolers.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: He was sorta doing this to An in his first appearance.
  • Important Haircut: After losing to Ryoma in the Nationals. Subverted because he's later shown using a wig.
  • Immune to Drugs: Played With during the Yakiniku miniarc. Surprisingly, Atobe is able to resist Inui's juice "KoOHiI", despite still being able to suffer from the bad taste alone.
  • Important Haircut: As part of his bet with Ryoma in the Nationals, he gets his hair cut into a buzzcut. He still wears a wig with his old hairstyle for the rest of the arc until it grows again. In the anime, at least he has the dignity of cutting it by himself, unlike in the manga, where Ryoma grabs an electric razor and cuts his hair off while he is still unconscious.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ryoma calls him "Monkey King" when they meet.
  • Insufferable Genius: He is constantly boasting about his beautiful skills and how everyone should approach and worship him.
  • It's All About Me: He directs and does an entire show before entering the court, with all the Hyotei school cheering his name. He even brought the Hyotei chant recorded and had it played at the U-17 training camp. He even calls himself "Ore-sama", highlighting his massive ego.
    • This actually plays against him in his duel with Yukimura in "Hyotei vs. Rikkaidai". Yukimura steals his catchphrase before he could do his usual boast. Despite not showing it, this throws him off his game, making him vulnerable to Yukimura's yips and losing the entire first game.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: So much. The biggest example is "Atobe Kara no Okurimono", in which he organizes a whole festival to cheer up Kabaji after his beloved older sister gets engaged.
  • Large Ham: One, if not the most "over the top".
  • Lascivious Beauty Mark: Atobe Keigo has a "teardrop mole," i.e. a mole under his right eye. He's not only the absurdly wealthy and talented captain and star of his school's tennis team, but he's also considered handsome and has hordes of fangirls. Lampshaded in-universe as one of his Image Songs, "Charm Point Wa Naki Bokuro", is about how his "gorgeous" "teardrop mole" is considered a Charm Point.
  • The Leader: Not only of the tennis club but of the whole Hyotei school as well since he is also the Student Council President. In The New Prince of Tennis, he volunteers to take on this role for all the middle schoolers after Tezuka leaves the U-17 camp.
  • Master of Disguise: In the doubles 1 match against Australia, it is revealed that Atobe was disguised as Niou the entire time. He does this so well to the point of being able to play well with his left hand and fool everyone watching.
  • Omniglot: He knows how to speak English, German, Latin, and Greek.
  • Passing the Torch: It's been stated that Hiyoshi will be the new Hyotei captain. In "The New Prince of Tennis", just like Tezuka played against Kaidoh as a rite, Atobe also did the same with Hiyoshi at the U-17 camp.
  • Pet the Dog: There's no doubt that he has an insufferable personality, but has shown a soft spot for his companion Kabaji and supported Shishido's plight without hesitation or second thoughts. And after he defeats Tezuka, he acknowledges his determination and instead of lifting his hand to celebrate, he takes Tezuka's hand and they both lift their clasped hands together.
  • Princely Young Man: Undoubtedly this, but he's far and away more of a Large Ham than Prince Charming and Spoiled Brat combined.
  • Red Baron: "King."
  • Renaissance Man: Omniglot, perfect grades, The Ace of the Tennis team, can play well in both singles and doubles, great singer, good at piano and violin and knows how to pilot a helicopter. Skydiving is also part of the long list of things he is good at.
  • The Rival: Of all the players outside Seigaku, he is this to Tezuka. He also has a Friendly Rivalry with Yukimura by the time of "Hyotei vs. Rikkaidai".
  • Signature Move: He has "Hametsu e no Rondo", "Tannhauser Serve" and "Koori no Sekai" in the original series, and then there's "Atobe Kingdom" in the sequel. Later in the world cup, he gets "Koori no Emperor".
  • Spoiled Brat: He is very rich, gets treated like a King by his servants and the student body, and often refers to himself as "Ore-sama".
  • Supporting Leader: When Tezuka leaves the U-17 camp to go to Germany and pursue a professional tennis career, Atobe promises to lead the middle school students in his stead, and he carries through with it, often by planning his matches to score psychological advantages and boost morale. Once the U-17 reps are chosen, Atobe is formally appointed the leader of the middle schoolers, and is a major supporting character throughout The New Prince of Tennis, though Ryoma remains the main character.
  • Teen Genius: According to his fanbook bio, there's no subject he is bad at. He is a prodigy at the tennis club, as student council president, and in every academic subject.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: When playing against Tezuka, at first his goal was to render his arm useless. As the match continues, Atobe gets astonished at Tezuka's determination to win even after severely injuring his shoulder and comes to regret the damage he made. Afterward, he becomes a more honorable player, while still keeping his haughty personality.

    Yuushi Oshitari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_oshitari_5315.jpg
Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi (JP), José Durán (LA SP)

Yuushi Oshitari is the genius of Hyoutei Academy. Originally from Osaka, he is called "Oshitari of the 1000 Skills" due to his ability to copy moves such as Fuji Shuusuke's Bear Drop and Atobe's Tannhauser Serve. He also has several of his own unique shots, which he refers to by acronyms such as "FAS" and "SSAS". He is also Kenya Oshitari's cousin.

  • The Ace: Has the fame of being a Teen Genius and the only member of the team able to have an even match with Atobe.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Averted, seeing as he sees perfectly fine without them.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: In the anime, Davide wants to take the chance when they are assigned as a doubles team (since Oshitari is from Kansai, the Kansai-ben puns at his expense wrote themselves) so Oshitari made the Tsukkomi in the duo.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: In the dating sim games. If you choose his route, he'll equally tease and flirt with the protagonist and help her out when she needs it. The databooks also say that he likes reading romance novels, which would explain why he may act as such.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: His sister calls him "Yuu-chan", according to Kenya. He hates it.
  • First-Name Basis: He and Gakuto are the only ones who use first names with each other.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Gakuto. They're the only doubles pair who are on First-Name Basis and hang out after school very often.
  • The Host: He and Eiji serve as commentators during the Yakiniku competition.
  • Hyper-Awareness: One of his strong points is his ability to analyze his opponent's skills. Also, he is very quick to notice small details about his teammates.
  • I Call It "Vera": He apparently names all his different pairs of glasses.
  • My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad: With Kenya, but they argue about the super rookies of the East and West instead.
  • My Greatest Second Chance:
    • During the National Tournament, he has the chance to redeem himself by playing singles against Momoshiro, who defeated him in doubles. Oshitari manages to win and recover his own honor and pride.
    • In "Hyotei vs. Rikkaidai", he and Gakuto finally win a doubles match and recover their honor as a pair. Gakuto was defeated in both of his doubles matches against Seigaku.
  • New Transfer Student: According to the fanbooks, Yuushi has been transferred to 6 different schools during his elementary years, Hyotei being the most recent one.
  • Number Two: Serves as this for Atobe along with Shishido. Shishido is the Hot-Blooded version, Yuushi is the calm one.
  • Princely Young Man: In a lesser degree than Atobe, and still qualifies for his good looks, his smooth talk, and his high grades at school, violin (only in the anime), and tennis.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: He wears them after his cousin Kenya tells him how smart he looks when they were playing doctor as children.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He is very fond of romantic novels and "chick-flicks".
  • Red Baron: "Oshitari of the 1000 Skills" and "Hyotei's Genius".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He is mostly seen as the Blue Oni to three different Red Oni - To Gakuto (his doubles partner), to Atobe (who is much more flamboyant than him), and to Kenya (who is the more expressive and outgoing of the two, even though the lines start to blur when they're put together, though...). Also to Eiji in the anime filler (they are partnered as a doubles team for the game against the American team).
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The sensitive guy to Kenya's manly man. Yuushi is more refined and enjoys romance novels and films while Kenya is more rough around the edges.
  • Signature Move: "Higuma Otoshi".
  • Straight Man: In the anime filler, he plays the serious contrast to Davide's lame puns, which excites Davide as they can form a manzai routine during their match, to Oshitari's chagrin. This is also played in the OVA chibi special, where Oshitari realizes that he is the only one in his team without a weird quirk.
  • Teen Genius: He is often referred to as "Hyoutei's Genius", is the second best at the tennis club, and plays piano and violin. And also remember he is only 15 years old.

    Gakuto Mukahi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_gakuto_3922.jpg
Voiced by: Soichiro Hoshi (JP), Carlos Vitale (LA SP)

Gakuto Mukahi is Hyoutei's acrobatic player. He considers himself better than Seigaku's Kikumaru and also considers him to be his rival.

  • My Greatest Second Chance: In "Hyotei vs. Rikkaidai", he and Oshitari finally win a doubles match and recover their honor as a pair. Gakuto was defeated in both of his doubles matches against Seigaku.
  • The Napoleon: One of the shortest players out of all the teams, but not one of the nicest.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red Oni to both Oshitari's and Hiyoshi's Blue Oni. Both are very in synch with their feelings and gameplay style, but while Gakuto is more boisterous and emotional, Oshitari is the one in control of his emotions and being Gakuto's Straight Man, while Hiyoshi is more quiet and in control of his temper, while being subdued to the Sempai/Kouhai hierarchy.
  • Signature Move: "Moon Sault".
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He is very fond of Karaage and fried chicken.

    Ryou Shishido
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_shishido_1647.jpg
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Kusuda (JP), Jorge Marín (LA SP)

Ryou Shishido is known as Hyoutei's "dash specialist" due to his speed and ability to return almost any ball. He is initially dropped from the regulars after being humiliated 6–0 by Tachibana Kippei, but he soon cuts his precious long hair and, with some help from Atobe, makes a return to the team.

  • Big Brother Mentor: To Ohtori, who idolizes him a lot.
  • Bromantic Foil: With Ohtori. While Shishido is tough, manly, and blunt, Ohtori is more docile, likes delicate hobbies, and has a sensitive nature. On top of that, their relationship is very close.
  • Catchphrase: "Gekidasa daze!" note
  • Childhood Friends: He has been friends with Gakuto and Jiroh since Elementary School.
  • Determinator: After getting kicked out of his regular spot, Shishido endured long hours of training by getting direct hits of Ohtori's Scud Serve to defeat Taki. When Sakaki still refused to let him play, he cut his hair to show how much he wanted his place on the team.
  • First-Name Basis: He calls Ohtori by his given name without honorifics (Choutarou), while Ohtori still calls him "Shishido-san"
  • Hot-Blooded: He is much easier to get angry, next to calm and gentle Ohtori.
  • Important Haircut: See Determinator above.
  • Lightning Bruiser: His special skill is his reflexes and how fast he can get to the other side of the court.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: In "Hyotei vs. Rikkaidai" Shishido finally recovers his pride by defeating Yagyuu in a Singles match. His last official Singles game before this one was his defeat against Kippei Tachibana, which made him lose his spot in the Regulars.
  • The Napoleon: Ohtori is One Head Taller than him, and Shishido is the most assertive and tough of the pair.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: Has one on his eyebrow.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red Oni to Ohtori's Blue Oni.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The manly man to Ohtori's sensitive guy.
  • Signature Head Gear: After his humble haircut, he is always seen playing with a light blue cap.
  • Signature Move: "Rising Counter".
  • Tsundere: Of the non-romantic example. He is very reluctant to express his affection for Ohtori right to his face.
  • Unexplained Accent: Speaks with a thick accent of some kind.

    Jiroh Akutagawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_jiro_1875.jpg
Voiced by: Yuji Ueda (JP), Caleb Yen (EN, Funimation), Johnny Torres (LA SP, Episode 48), Héctor Indriago (LA SP, Episodes 62-63)

Jiroh is called the "magic volleyer" of Hyoutei Academy. His play style, which focuses on returning balls directly from the net using his very flexible wrists, is inspired by Rikkai's Marui Bunta, who defeated him in a match two years earlier. He constantly sleeps, and he is very excitable.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Blond in the manga, but a honey brown in the anime.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Even though he skips morning training and naps in the middle of club activities, Jiroh still keeps his spot in the regulars because of his volley skills.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Even though he always looks sleepy, he has the distinction of defeating Fuji Yuuta in only 15 minutes.
  • Childhood Friends: He has been friends with Gakuto and Shishido since elementary school.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite being a sleepyhead, a keet, and looking a bit clumsy, he isn't regarded as Hyotei's volley genius for nothing. His game style consists in returning shots looking like he is tripping, catching his opponent off guard when it actually makes it to the other side.
  • Fan Boy: Towards Fuji and Bunta. He doesn't miss a chance to greet Marui whenever he is around him.
  • Genius Ditz: While he is regarded as the volley genius (inspired by Marui's style), Ohtori once mentioned that Jiroh always plays in his boxers because he pulls out his shorts along with the sweatpants.
  • Heavy Sleeper: He will just wake up for a tennis match if it was interesting.
  • Keet:
    • Whenever he is not sleeping, he gets highly enthusiastic if the match is interesting. It says a lot given that he was awake the entire re-match against Seigaku.
    • Whenever the opponent gets a point from him, instead of getting upset he starts to Squee.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: His shorts are white with vertical light blue strips. It turns out that, as mentioned in Genius Ditz above, those are his sleeping boxers.
  • Out of Focus: Despite still having his spot in the regulars, Jiroh has been benched since his match with Fuji, as he doesn't play in any of the important games after that.
  • Sleepyhead: He is often seen sleeping and napping around, inside and outside of the court. Once he even ruined one of Atobe's chants in a match, because he was mumbling asleep.
  • Stalker with a Crush: It's stated that once Jiroh stalked Marui and got one of his wristbands as a souvenir. Also one of his customs after school is to commute to Rikkaidai and watch Marui practice.

    Munehiro Kabaji
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kabaji_8593.jpg
Voiced by: Satoshi Tsuruoka (JP)

Kabaji is Atobe's faithful follower. But despite his appearance, Kabaji is also a very powerful player. His simplemindedness proves to be to his advantage because he can imitate his opponent's play style by just observing them. However, the techniques often are too much for him to use, which can lead him to strain his body. Kabaji rarely talks, and he is often heard saying "usu" ("yes" or "yup") to Atobe.

  • Battle Butler: In addition to being the strongest member of the tennis club, he also serves as Atobe's personal assistant.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He adores his older sister, and was very distraught when she got engaged.
  • Big Eater: As shown in the Yakiniku mini-arc, Atobe even uses him as his "secret weapon" in the match.
  • Catchphrase: "Usu!" ("Yup!" / "Okay!")
  • Childhood Friend: With Atobe. Their official bios state they went to the same kindergarten, and even while still at Elementary School, Kabaji still followed Atobe's directions.
    • He is seen to be also closer to Hiyoshi and Ohtori since both were in Hyotei's elementary School division. Their bond is seen in more detail in "Shinpuri: Hyotei vs. Rikkaidai"
  • Ditto Fighter: Capable of copying the moves of nearly any opponent he faces, but does not keep them. The only thing constant seems to be his sheer power.
  • The Dragon: Since Hyotei doesn't have a Vice-captain, Kabaji fills the spot when Atobe has to attend the Regional Teams gathering as Atobe's assistant. Easily one of the most formidable players on the team (possibly third to Atobe and Oshitarinote ), he's often posed one of the biggest challenges to Seigaku to the point of matching Tezuka.
  • Gentle Giant: As kind and humble as he's strong.
  • Important Haircut: Since Atobe had to fulfill his bet with Ryoma, Kabaji willingly cut his hair as well to accompany him until it grows out again. Even though Atobe uses extensions...
  • The Quiet One: He rarely talks aside from nodding to Atobe with a "Usu". When he does talk, it's short and to the point.
    • The longest line he has is in the "Atobe Kara no Okurimono" special, where he thanks him for doing a lot to cheer him up.
    • Another notable moment where he talks more than usual is in Pair Puri, as he handled Ohtori a water bottle and said some friendly words when he noticed Ohtori was upset.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: The fanbooks say that he loves knitting and his favorite school subject is Home Economics.
  • Sidekick: To Atobe. He is mainly his personal assistant.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Even though he's capable of copying extremely complex moves, he often lacks the experience to utilize them in certain situations (such as using Tezuka's "Pinnacle of Hard Work" in the rain), which proves to be his undoing.
  • The Stoic: Zigzagged. He is always seen as deadpan and servile. But he is highly sensitive and takes action, especially regarding Atobe.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Atobe. His impulse to protect Atobe from a threatening shot in the middle of a game gets him expelled from the U-17 camp.
  • Yes-Man: Subverted. He nods at any of Atobe's orders out of pure loyalty.
  • Younger Than They Look: A reminder that despite being 190 cms. tall, he is actually 13 years old, one year younger than Atobe.

    Choutarou Ohtori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_ohtori_1955.jpg
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (JP), Paolo Campos (LA SP)

Ohtori Choutarou is Shishido Ryou's doubles partner and close friend. He helps Shishido get back on the team, which makes the two very close. Chotaro has a very fast serve called the "Scud Serve", which can go up to 200 km/h, though it is limited in accuracy until he masters it. He later renames it the Neo Scud Serve, which goes up to 215 km/h.

  • Bromantic Foil: To Shishido. While Shishido is tough, manly, and blunt, Ohtori is more docile, likes delicate hobbies, and has a sensitive nature. On top of that, their relationship is very close.
  • Catchphrase: "Ikkyunyukon!" ("With all my soul!" Said whenever he serves.)
  • Childhood Friends: He is seen to be this with Hiyoshi since elementary school.
  • Crucial Cross: He uses a cross pendant around his neck despite not being Catholic. He later tells Shishido that he goes to church to get some mental peace before a game, but he isn't a religious person.
  • First-Name Basis: He's on the receiving end, as Shishido calls Ohtori by his given name without honorifics (Choutarou), while Ohtori still calls him "Shishido-san".
  • Gentle Giant: He's the second tallest player of Hyoutei Gakuen but his daily activities include going to the gardens to feed the birds. Also, his worst subject at school is "Experiments with Living Things".
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Subverted. He has a pretty singing voice in all the singles released as part of the show's merchandise, but in one of the Chibi-Omakes, Oshitari discovers that Ohtori is a great musician, but a terrible singer when alone.
  • Nice Guy: To the point others get surprised if he ever gets angry.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: In the manga and OVAs he plays with the team jersey, a plain white t-shirt, and his cross necklace.
  • Princely Young Man: He is charming, nice, and soft-spoken, his hobbies include tennis, violin, and piano. According to his bio, his family is also wealthy.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue Oni to Shishido's Red Oni.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The sensitive guy to Shishido's manly man.
  • Signature Move: "Scud Serve".
  • Spell My Name With An S Ohtori/Ootori/Otori... and then Choutarou/Choutaroh/Chohtarou.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Shishido. He considered giving up his spot on the regulars for Shishido and is constantly looking up to him.

    Wakashi Hiyoshi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_hiyoshi_201.jpg
Voiced by: Masami Iwasaki (JP), José Granadillo (LA SP)

Wakashi Hiyoshi is the latest addition to the regular team. Despite being a sophomore, Hiyoshi is a very promising player and has been confirmed by Atobe to be the next captain of Hyoutei after he graduates. He uses an unorthodox style of tennis he dubs Enbu Tennis, which combines martial arts with standard tennis.

  • Always Someone Better: His catchphrase "Gekokujou" means "Surpass the one on top", which he firmly believes if he wants to be worthy of Atobe's seat as Team Captain.
  • Adapted Out: Unfortunately in the Live-Action movie, the writers decided to create a Canon Foreigner that would look like the typical Final Boss and put him to play against Ryoma in the final match, so they gave him Hiyoshi's spot. Hiyoshi's fans weren't happy with this.
  • Badass Bookworm: His official bio states he spends his allowance on books. And he also practices martial arts.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Turns out that he is shortsighted. According to the Official Fanbook, he has -0.5 on each eye, and he has to wear contact lenses to play. In one of the shorts where most of the characters with glasses are at a glasses store, everyone has to help Hiyoshi find one of his contacts, but nobody dares to take a step with the risk of stepping on it.
  • Catchphrase: "Gekokujou!", which he says every time he encounters a new challenge.
  • Childhood Friends: He is seen to be this with Ohtori since elementary school.
  • Dreadful Musician: According to the fanbooks, his worst subject is Music, and he dislikes going to karaoke.
  • Foil:
    • He and Kaidoh. Both are appointed as future captains of their teams, with quiet personalities and methodic training routines, Kaidoh being more Hot-Blooded. Also as seen in New Prince of Tennis, Hiyoshi is a big fan of aliens and the paranormal, while Kaidoh is so afraid of ghosts that only the mention of them makes him shake in fear.
    • With Kirihara as well. Both are appointed as the future talents of their teams, but while Hiyoshi is confirmed to be the next captain, Kirihara isn't chosen as team captain since he lacks the maturity and discipline to lead. Hiyoshi is quiet and disciplined but can relax off-court, while Kirihara is aggressive on the court, but can be childish and a Keet when he isn't playing. Both have a fascination for aliens and the paranormal. Also, Hiyoshi is humble and respectful to his seniors, while also maintaining his "Gekokujou" mentality (he admires Atobe, but wants to surpass him in an honorable match). Kirihara, on the other hand, has to be controlled by his seniors, who had to beat him in tennis, and literally by Sanada, so a lot of his respect for them had to be enforced.
  • Heir to the Dojo: Comes from a martial arts-centered clan. His ending in the Gakuensai no Oujisama game has him actually inviting the lead girl, now his girlfriend, to the dojo so she can watch him practice and then meet his family.
  • Kung-Fu Kid: He bases his tennis style on martial arts since his family owns an Enbu dojo.
  • Odd Couple: For the Nationals, he gets paired with Gakuto, who also serves as a Foil too. Both are very skilled tennis players that base their styles on other skills (Hiyoshi uses his martial arts and Gakuto has a very high jump and flexibility) and both have short endurance in long games. While Hiyoshi is calm and quiet, Gakuto is loud and boisterous. This even gets lampshaded when both of them are planning their game strategy... in a date spot cafe.
  • Odd Friendship: Despite being annoyed by Kirihara's keet personality interrupting his meditation, he gets interested in having a conversation with him when Kirihara mentions ghosts at the camp. He is later showing his roommates magazines about UFOs and paranormal activity, things that interest Kirihara as well.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue Oni to Gakuto's Red Oni. While Gakuto is more boisterous and emotional, Hiyoshi is quieter and in control of his temper, while being subdued to the Sempai/Kouhai hierarchy.
  • School Newspaper News Hound: Hiyoshi is part of the school newspaper committee. He also seems to always be on the lookout for strange phenomena such as UFOs.
  • Tender Tears: He cried when Hyotei loses a second time against Seigaku.

    Haginosuke Taki

Voiced by: Kohei Kiyasu (JP), Héctor Indriago (LA SP)

Taki was a regular on Hyoutei's tennis team until he lost horribly to Shishido Ryou and was replaced by Hiyoshi Wakashi. He was a former doubles partner from Ohtori Choutarou.

  • Ascended Extra:
    • In the anime, his role is expanded when Taki tries to offer himself to cut his hair instead of Atobe.
    • The All-Stars Hyotei Character Album features Taki having a song for himself for the first time.
  • Catchphrase: "Yaru ne".
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • He appears alongside the Hyotei regulars at the street courts. Later, he loses his spot against Shishido and isn't seen again until the Nationals, where his only role is to hold a machine and tell the speed of the balls (like how fast Inui's "Waterfall" and Ohtori's "Scud Serve").
    • Also played with in the Musicals. In the 1st Season, Taki is only mentioned and/or alluded to being replaced by Shishido, while in the 2nd Season, Taki is included in the Hyotei cast with song parts.
  • Flanderization: After the Nationals, the chibi OVAs reduced his character to "the guy with the chronometer". Yuushi watches him using the chronometer while watching a fountain, questioning what is he supposed to be measuring.
  • Important Haircut: Invoked. In the anime, when Ryoma is going to cut Atobe's hair to fill in their bet, Taki tries to stop him and offers to have his own beautiful haircut instead. Ryoma looks like he's considering the offer, but then Atobe grabs the electric razor and cuts his own hair instead.
  • Ludicrous Precision: His special skill is measuring time and he's able to stop the stopwatch at exactly one minute.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: He has to sacrifice his regular spot as he lost to Shishido.
