Grimwood's School for Ghouls
Miss Grimwood
- Voiced by: Glynis Johns
- Ambiguously Human: It's hard to tell if she's a human or a monster. She certainly dresses the part and cooks a lot of food that doesn't sound like something a human could consume. She could be a witch.
- Cool Old Lady: Well not too old, she looks like she's in her late 30's-early 40's. But she's still rather sweet regardless.
- Dark Is Not Evil: She has black hair, and she cares for her students.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Inverted. You would expect someone called "Grimwood" to be a nasty person, but she's rather sweet.
- Running Gag: She always berates Matches for doing something wrong as if he were a dog.
Matches
- Voiced by: Frank Welker
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He does not get along with Scooby until the final act of the film, but he gets along with Scrappy, and he clearly cares about the girls.
- Logical Weakness: Water. If he gets wet, he can't activate his flames.
- Meaningful Name: He's a fire breathing dragon named Matches.
- Playing with Fire: Since he's a dragon, he regularly breathes fire for various reasons: helping Miss Grimwood light something, trying to scare away people he doesn't like, or protecting himself or his friends.
- Speech-Impaired Animal: Unlike Scooby however, you actually understand him, especially if he says "Yeah" or "Oh".
- Took a Level in Kindness: Matches spends most of the movie antagonizing Scooby and spitting fire at him whenever Scooby crosses his path. Near the end of the movie, Matches finally develops a friendlier attitude towards him and saves him from the Grim Creeper.
- Team Pet: Pretty much the pet of the boarding school.
- Turns Red: When he gets angry, he turns completely red before letting loose the flames.
Floating Hand
A sentient, disembodied, floating hand and a member of staff at Miss Grimwood's school.- Animate Inanimate Object: She's a sentient hand.
- Hidden Depths: She has an affinity for playing the organ like Phantasma, joining in on her playing when the girls' parents come to visit.
- No Name Given: She isn't known to have a name.
- The Speechless: Justified because she doesn't have a mouth.
Octopus Butler
Another member of staff at Miss Grimwood's school, he doubles as a butler.- No Name Given: He isn't known to have a name.
- The Speechless: He never speaks, but is intelligent enough to help Miss Grimwood manage the school.
Legs
Miss Grimwood's pet spider, who is good at mending nets.
- Flat Character: Exists only to mend the volleyball net during the Grimwood–Calloway match.
- Lazy Bum: By the third time the volleyball net gets damaged during the Grimwood–Calloway match, he stubbornly refuses to mend it until Miss Grimwood bribes him with a dozen extra flies for supper. Fortunately for him, the net doesn't get damaged again.
- Meaningful Name: Legs is an appropriate name for a spider.
- Red Herring Mole: Since the Big Bad has a spider motif, one might be inclined to suspect that Legs will turn out to be Evil All Along. He is not affiliated with the Big Bad in any way, and is fairly loyal to Miss Grimwood in spite of his stubbornness.
- The Speechless: He never speaks, but is intelligent enough to understand others.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Is never seen or heard from again after the volleyball match.
Sibella, daughter of Dracula
Despite being one of the quietest, calmest girls, Sibella appears to be the leader of the bunch, as well as the oldest. She is helpful, polite, and while being a monster, is very sweet and the most easygoing of the girls. She's very sultry, and possibly the strongest of the girls.
- Action Girl: She managed to put up a very strong fight in bat form against Revolta's minions.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: She and her father have purple skin.
- Big Sister Instinct: She seems to have this, trying to warn Tanis and Elsa not to go near the shack or Winnie and Phantasma, following their brainwashing.
- Cute Little Fangs: Being a vampire girl, it would make sense that she'd have tiny fangs that compliment her cuteness.
- Cute Monster Girl: She's a friendly vampire and she has light purple skin.
- Dark Is Not Evil: She may be a vampire, but she's a Nice Girl.
- Daywalking Vampire: She is a vampire who doesn't have any problem going about in sunlight.
- Deadly Dodging: How she manages to lose the spiderbats at one point, by tricking them into colliding with each other.
- Dhampyr: Is implied to be this seeing as she doesn't appear to suffer any negative impacts from sunlight (but is presumably still weak to garlic since it's the only topping her pizza doesn't include).
- Exact Words: She takes up Winnie's offer of a race to stretch her wings instead of her legs, allowing her to get an unfair advantage.
- Final Girl: She is the last of the girls to be captured by Revolta.
- Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: She's a vampire girl who's amiable and kindhearted.
- Fur Against Fang: She appears to have a friendly rivalry with Winnie, as shown when she calls her a show off, and when she decides to take up her offer of a race to change into a bat.
- Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She definitely shows this given her interest in volleyball, and her willingness to show a competitive streak.
- Graceful Ladies Like Purple: With the exception of her eyes and lips, her entire color palette consists of different shades of purple.
- Heroic Willpower: Even Revolta was impressed by how much effort it took to place Sibella under mind control.
- The Leader: She appears to be the leader of the Grimwood Girls.
- Nice Girl: Without a doubt.
- Our Vampires Are Different: Sibella is never seen drinking blood (though she does suck the juice out of a crab apple), and appears unharmed while being out in daytime. She can also turn into a bat.
- Proper Lady: She's young and the daughter of a famous monster, but her manners are impeccable.
- Pungeon Master: Even in a script comprised almost entirely of puns, she stands out for her every other line being some sort of reference to her vampirism (as well as her Character Catchphrase, "Fangtastic!")
- Purple Is Powerful: She has a mostly purple color scheme and has a variety of abilities at her disposal.
- Sexophone: ...Even though she is about 13 or 14. Of course, she could technically be 113 or 114.
- Textile Work Is Feminine: Sibella is the most feminine and sews bathrobes for her parents' day gift, even making one for Matches.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Winnie's Tomboy.
- Verbal Tic: She has a love for vampire puns. She also occasionally does bat shrieks before speaking (what’s more, she can't talk in bat form).
- Vocal Evolution: For her appearance in OK K.O., since it had been years since Susan Blu voiced her, Sibella's lost most of her more seductive tone.
Elsa Frankenteen
Elsa is the tallest and presumably the second oldest of the girls. While she speaks like a simpleton and is prone to state the obvious, she is actually very bright, creating a "portable Shockman" in science class for her father. She is blunt, assertive and has no problem standing up to Revolta.
- Captain Obvious: She sometimes points out the obvious, like pointing out that Shaggy and Scooby don't run like they're tired.
- Covers Always Lie: A later VHS cover (which was also used for the DVD) for the film depicts Elsa with a greenish skin tone, as opposed to the flesh-colored one she sports in the movie itself.
- Cute Monster Girl: She ranges into the ugly cute territory, unlike her friends who are straight-up cute.
- Dark Is Not Evil: She has black and white hair, and is a friendly Frankenstein's monster.
- Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Her hearty pat on the back sends Shaggy and Scooby flying and when she uses a log to save the Calloway boys, she accidentally sends them all flying too.
- Frankenstein's Monster: Well, daughter of Frankenstein's monster, anyway, and one of the cuter versions.
- Shout-Out: Her name is likely one to Elsa Lancaster, the actress who played the titular Bride in Bride of Frankenstein.
- The Smart Girl: Despite sounding very slow, she's probably the most intelligent, being a scientist at no older than age 13 or 14.
- Super-Strength: Being a Frankenstein's monster, she naturally has incredible strength.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Tanis's Girly Girl.
- Verbal Tic: She speaks very, very slowly, and continuously refers to Shaggy as "Coach".
Phantasma "Phanty", daughter of the Phantom
The middle girl, Phanty, is the most hyperactive, expressive, and silly, though she is musically very gifted, able to compose her own songs on the organ.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Like her father, she has blue skin.
- Cloudcuckoolander: She is one eccentric ghoul. For instance, she has her neck rotate 180 degrees when advised to loosen her joints.
- Cute Ghost Girl: She's the new Casper of the group, who is female and is a ghost.
- Demonic Possession: Gains this ability in OK KO. She uses it on KO when the girls show off their abilities, and possesses a tree monster after it captures Winnie and Tanis.
- Elegant Classical Musician: In stark contrast to her wacky, childish demeanor and being at the age of 12.
- Ethereal White Dress: Well, a skirt in this case, but it definitely still applies.
- Friendly Ghost: She may be the kind of "Casper" you're looking for.
- Genki Girl: The most hyper among the ghouls.
- The Hyena: She laughs excessively, bordering on Laughing Mad.
- Light Is Good: Her colour palette consists of white and shades of light blue, and she is a friendly and hyperactive ghost girl.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: She fulfills both roles.
- Tomboy: To Sibella and Tanis's Girly Girls.
- Girly Girl: To Elsa and Winnie's Tomboys.
- Town Girls: As said above, while Winnie & Elsa are the most tomboyish and Sibella & Tanis are the girliest, she is somewhere in-between which would make her Neither.
- Undeathly Pallor: She has light blue skin that creates the illusion that she is an asphyxiated corpse.
- Verbal Tic: Her hyena laugh.
- Vocal Evolution: Due to her age, Russi Taylor portrayed her with a less shrill voice in OK K.O..
Winnie the Werewolf
The second-youngest girl, Winnie is the toughest, the most tomboyish, and the most athletic. While Sibella seems to be the leader, Winnie is the bossiest, even bossing the older Sibella. She's fearless and confident, and this got her in trouble at one point.
- '80s Hair: Not surprisingly, given the decade the movie was made in.
- Absurdly Sharp Claws: In her reappearance in Monster Party, she was able to recreate a werewolf version of the statue of David, quickly shredding the marble with only her claws.
- The Big Girl: Ironically, being the second shortest, since she's presumably about 8-10.
- Cute Monster Girl: She's a cute werewolf girl.
- Dark Is Not Evil: She may be a werewolf, but she's quite friendly.
- Fiery Redhead: She has red hair and can get quite ferocious.
- Lovable Jock: She's the most athletically inclined, but no less friendly than the other monster girls.
- Our Werewolves Are Different: She doesn't seem to have a human form.
- Supernatural Gold Eyes: She is a lycanthrope with yellow eyes.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Sibella's Girly Girl.
- Unusual Ears: Has dog like ears due to being a werewolf.
- Wonderful Werewolf: A friendly little werewolf girl if there ever was one. Her father also qualifies.
Tanis, daughter of the Mummy
The youngest girl, Tanis is sweet but insecure, and so looks up to the oldest girls for assurance. She's very protective of all her friends and has a brave side.
- The Baby of the Bunch: The youngest out of all the girls, about 3-6.
- Badass Adorable: She's such a little thing, and while she's not much of a fighter she fearlessly steals Revolta's wand by using some of her bandages as a lasso.
- Chummy Mummy: She is by far one of the friendliest mummies you will ever meet.
- Cute Monster Girl: She's an adorable little mummy.
- The Heart: She is the most innocent of the girls.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: A most unusual feature for an Egyptian girl.
- Light Is Good: A mummy girl wrapped in white bandages, she is the most innocent of the girls attending Miss Grimwood's school.
- Little Miss Badass: Despite being the youngest girl, in the big final confrontation she casually and fearlessly deprives Revolta of her power ("I want that wand, Revolta!!").
- Meaningful Name: It's subtle. Tanis is named after a city in Egypt.
- Mummy Wrap: She is shown to able to use her bandages like lassos and ropes.
- Pink Means Feminine: It's actually closer to a red but, yes, she's a girl who wears a pink bow.
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: In Monster Party, she can casually bench-press a car with her ponytail-wrapping. While she lies down and reads a book!
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Elsa's Tomboy.
- Undead Child: She's the daughter of a mummy, somehow. Egyptian mythology has a rather family-unfriendly explanation for that.
Calloway Military School
The Calloway Military School
- Voiced by: Ronnie Schell (Colonel Calloway), Jeff B. Cohen (Grunt), Scott Menville (Tug Roper), Aaron Lohr (Miguel), Remy Auberjonois (Baxter) and Bumper Robinson (Jamal)
The residents of the military school across the street and rivals of the Grimwood School.
- Acrofatic: Grunt is quite fast and capable despite being overweight.
- The Baby of the Bunch: Baxter is the youngest, smallest and least proactive of the five cadets.
- Bully Turned Buddy: They look down on the girls a bit but due gradually soften up, come to owe them their lives and try to save the day.
- Cheaters Never Prosper: During the volleyball game they use a lot of inventions for advantages but still lose.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: Tug is the leader of the cadets, but Calloway seems to approve of Jamal more.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Miguel is capable of making complex inventions in no time at all.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though overcompetitive, mean and pretentious, the Calloway boys turn out to be loyal and goodhearted, and come to the girls' aid when they need it most.
- The Rival: To the Grimwood girls, having beat them at volleyball every time before Shaggy becomes the girls' new coach. They're more jerks than villains, and eventually warm up to the girls.
- Sore Loser: The Colonel is unhappy to hand over the volleyball trophy.
- Stout Strength: Grunt.
- Verbal Tic: Jamal says "affirmative" to end a sentence a lot.
- Weirdness Censor: They do think the Grimwood girls are weird, but don't seem to realize they're monsters.
- "Well Done, Son" Guy: There's no biological relationship but they all clearly want to impress Calloway, especially Tug.
Other
The Grimwood Girls' Dads
- Voiced by: Zale Kessler (Daddy Dracula and Frankenteen Sr.), Andre Stojka (Mummy Daddy), Hamilton Camp (Phantom Father), Frank Welker (Papa Werewolf)
The monster girls' fathers, who show up to visit the school.
- Adaptation Species Change: The Phantom is clearly a reference to the Phantom of the Opera, given his mode of dress, Phantasma's affinity for the pipe organ, and the fact that the film of Phantom is considered part of the Universal Studios Monsters series. But the original Phantom was a disfigured living man, not a literal specter.
- Though considering that the musical Phantom of the Opera took place in the late 1800s, there might be some fridge brilliance involved.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Daddy Dracula and the Phantom Father are respectively colored purple and blue.
- Ambiguously Absent Parent: None of the girls' mothers are acknowledged.
- Broken Pedestal: Revolta looks down on them, saying they used to be mighty monsters before they went soft.
- Frankenstein's Monster: Frankenteen Sr. is obviously a Frankenstein's monster, being Elsa's dad.
- Friendship Moment: It's raining when they're all arriving at the school, so Daddy Dracula uses his cape to give Mummy Daddy some extra covering since the guy's bandages aren't water-proof.
- Good Parents: All of them are loving fathers to their daughters.
- Monster Mash: Just like their daughters, these men are a vampire, a Frankenstein's monster, a mummy, a phantom, and a werewolf.
- Karloff Kopy: Frankenteen Sr. sounds vaguely like Boris Karloff.
- Lorre Lookalike: The Phantom Father's voice is a clear Peter Lorre impression, with his big round eyes accentuating the resemblance.
- Papa Wolf: All of the monster fathers threaten to clobber Scooby and Shaggy should anything happen to their daughters. Mummy Daddy and Phantom Father even extend their threats to cover all five of the girls.
- Unnamed Parent: Most of them aren't referred to as anything other than a synonym for "father", if they're ever given a designation at all.
Antagonists
Revolta, the Witch of the Web
- Voiced by: Ruta Lee
The primary villain of the film. A spider-witch who seeks to make the Grimwood girls her personal slaves.
- Animal Motifs: Spiders. She has multiple arms and her minions include bats with eight legs, which are appropriately called spider-bats.
- Bad Powers, Bad People: She has the power to brainwash others into obeying her every command, and can create spider-bats and empower them with the same magic. You would never guess, but she is evil.
- Big Bad: She is the main villain of the film.
- Card-Carrying Villain: It's kind of to be expected when her name is literally "Revolta". She knows she's evil and takes pride in it! Oh, and her end-goal is to Take Over the World.
- The Corrupter: Has a device that'll make monsters evil. She seeks to use it on the girls so she can make them her slaves. At first it's only temporary, but if she can "Revoltize" them, they will be her slaves forever.
- Dark Is Evil: She has ivy green hair, dresses in black, and is a Card-Carrying Villain who is Obviously Evil.
- Evil Counterpart: To Miss Grimwood. It is implied that Miss Grimwood, like Revolta, is a witch, and both have threatening-sounding names (i.e. "Grimwood" and "Revolta"). However, Miss Grimwood is a Reasonable Authority Figure who cares for her students, while Revolta is a Wicked Witch who tries to enslave them.
- Evil Laugh: She has a chilling one.
- Evil Sounds Deep: She has a deep voice, and is a dangerous spider-witch.
- Eviler than Thou: She considers herself more evil than the monster girls' fathers, even in their Papa Wolf moment. She used to respect them, but now thinks they've gone soft.
- Knight of Cerebus: Until she takes center stage as the main villain, the most the heroes have to worry about is the rival school and upsetting the girls' parents.
- Meaningful Name: Revolta is a depraved creature with an intentionally hideous design.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: She's a vile antagonist with four arms.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Unlike Miss Grimwood, Revolta is every bit as evil as you'd expect someone who has such a name would be. Bonus points for "the Witch of the Web" sounding similar to "the Wicked Witch of the West".
- Obviously Evil: Just look at her; there's no way anyone who looks like that could be good.
- Red Baron: The Witch of the Web.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has blood-red eyes, as if her Obviously Evil aura wasn't apparent enough.
- Take Over the World: Her endgame is pretty much world domination, using the Grimwood Girls as her personal army.
- Uncertain Doom: She's last seen falling out of the sky after she no longer has the magic to remain in the air on her broom. We don't see if she survived.
- Verbal Tic: She rolls her "R"s.
- Villain Respect:
- Downplayed with the Grimwood girls' fathers. She used to respect them, but believes that having children has rendered them a shadow of their former fierce selves.
- She admits that she is impressed by how long it takes to put Sibella under her spell.
- Wicked Witch: A spider-witch and wields a lot of spells. The whole kidnapping of child monsters adds to the overtone. She even has a cauldron.
- Would Hurt a Child: Her plot to forcibly capture and brainwash the Grimwood girls into becoming her slaves is made all the more disturbing by the fact that most of them are still children. To put it in perspective, Sibella, the oldest of the girls, is a young teenager.
Grim Creeper
- Voiced by: Andre Stojka
Revolta's right-hand man. A potato monster.
- Animate Inanimate Object: He's pretty much a giant walking potato.
- Butt-Monkey: Gets the raw end when it comes to slapstick. Doesn't stop him from being a credible threat.
- Cyclops: Oddly enough, despite being a potato, he only has the one eye.
- The Dragon: He is Revolta's main underling.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He has six roots for arms, and is more dangerous and intelligent than his slapstick status would have you believe.
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: He gives the impression that he is an idiot, given how much he serves for comedy and gets hit around. The second he actually appears to the Grimwood girls, he proves to be very formidable and intelligent.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: His single eye is red, and he is Revolta's right-hand man (or potato) and a Not-So-Harmless Villain.
- Uncertain Doom: He's seen alongside his mistress during the events of above, leaving his fate in the dark along with Revolta's.
- Would Hurt a Child: He has no problem with helping Revolta forcibly capture and brainwash the Grimwood girls into becoming his mistress' slaves, even though most of them are still children with Sibella, the oldest, being a young teenager.
Mirror Monster
- Voiced by: Casey Kasem
An enigmatic entity that resides within a mirror in Revolta's castle. When Shaggy stands in front of their mirror for too long, they trap him in the mirror and take his place in the real world, before proceeding to torment Scooby.
- Ambiguous Gender: Due to being a demonic counterpart to whoever stands in front of their mirror for too long, it's unknown if they have an actual gender.
- Evil Doppelgänger: They become this to anyone who stands in front of their mirror for too long.
- Filler Villain: Their only real purpose in the film is to make it even more difficult for the heroes to save the then-brainwashed Grimwood girls from Revolta.
- No Name Given: They're only known as the Mirror Monster.
- Obviously Evil: Neither their appearance or their behavior conceals the fact that they're not actually Shaggy.
- Riddle for the Ages: No explanation for why Revolta keeps their mirror in her castle or what use they could be to her. They just... exist.
- Sadist: They clearly enjoy tormenting poor Scooby.Mirror Monster: He [Shaggy] can't help you now! No-one can help you now!
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After being burnt by Matches, the Mirror Monster decides it's too dangerous outside his mirror and returns into it, freeing Shaggy in the process.
