Mondstadt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emblem_mondstadt_1.png

Mondstadt is the nation of Wind and Freedom, under the patronage of the Anemo Archon, Lord Barbatos. Located in northeastern Teyvat, Mondstadt was founded on the ashes of Old Mondstadt twenty-six centuries ago, when its citizens rose up and deposed their autocratic ruler, Decarabian.

Devoted to the ideals of freedom, Barbatos refused to institute direct rule over Mondstadt, and only intervenes to protect the city's freedom in times of crisis. Mondstadt at present has no direct ruler, with the prominent Knights of Favonius being only a civilian peacekeeping institution. The people of Mondstadt are instead guided by their belief in Lord Barbatos and the winds of freedom that he represents.

    open/close all folders

    General Tropes
  • Anarchy Is Chaos: It is mostly an aversion, being a fairly peaceful nation with no ruler or higher power, with even its resident Archon taking a hands-off approach towards watching over it. However, that isn't to say the lack of central government isn't without downsides:
    • Its law enforcement body is constantly swamped with complaints, requests, and other crises that they can't hand off to anyone else, and Grandmaster Varka took roughly half of its manpower on a faraway expedition, leaving them even more overworked. At the start of her Story Quest, Jean collapsed in exhaustion from the sheer difficulty of handling matters with a skeleton staff.
    • A prosperous alcohol industry combined with understaffed law enforcement results in a serious problem with alcoholism nationwide.
    • Human resources basically doesn't exist, and the population is free to act upon their prejudices with little consequence to themselves, such as Eula Lawrence being forced to survive on wild game (despite being wealthy on account of her clan's ill reputation for their repressive autocracy centuries ago), Thoma bemoaning his questionable place in Mondstadter society owing to his poor alcohol tolerance, Lawrence (the Knight of Favonius) being given many an inquisitive glare on account of sharing his birth name with the hated clan, and the local Adventurer's Guild (bar Cyrus, Jack, and, later, Anna) having little tolerance for its quirkier members such as Fischl and Bennett.
    • The Abyss Order is particularly active in the region, and their corruption of Dvalin could've easily led to Mondstadt's destruction had the Traveler not been around. Afterwards, the Fatui are able to attack Venti and the Traveler in a public square and steal the Anemo Gnosis with no one around to witness, let alone stop them.
    • Mondstadt was hit the hardest by the Cataclysm 500 years ago, losing many innocent lives to the monster swarms that were simply too numerous for the Knights of Favonius to combat in record time. The disaster led to one Rosalyne-Kruzchka Lohefalter, whose Favonian lover Rostam died fighting the monsters, becoming La Signora.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: In general, Mondstadt bears a German cultural aesthetic—most characters and locations bear German names; the City's architecture features timber framing on its houses and Gothic style for stone structures; its national bird is an eaglenote ; the symbol of Mondstadt's Hero, traditional site of the apotheosis of Vennessa, founder of the Knights of Favonius, is a giant oak, the national tree of Germany; its reputation for poetry is an allusion to one of Germany's titles as "Das Land der Dichter und Denker" ("The Land of Thinkers and Poets"); and its reputation for espousing the values of freedom harken back to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Germany's preeminent poets and the Chinese and Japanese namesake of the Goth Grand Hotel. More specifically, its culture also evokes that of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate), the largest producer and exporter of wine in Germany.

See their individual page here.

Four Winds

Four beings appointed by Barbatos as protectors of Mondstadt.
    General Tropes
  • Blow You Away: All of the Four Winds are associated with Anemo, their Archon's primary element.
  • No Badass to His Valet: Venti's character trailer reveals that all of his trusted enforcers are pretty exasperated with how free-spirited their deity is. They all bluntly try to get Barbatos to take his job as their Archon seriously.
  • Token Human: Out of all of them, only the Lion of the South who serves as the grandmaster of the Knights of Favonius like Varka and Jean is human. While Vennessa also served in the position during her life, she later ascended into the Falcon of the West after coming to Celestia near the end of her human life.
  • Undying Loyalty: Regardless of how they feel about Barbatos, they all espouse the freedom he cherishes and sought to protect the freedom that Barbatos fought so hard to give to the people of Mondstadt.

    Wolf of the North

Andrius, Wolf of the North

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_andrius_full_artwork.png
Dominator of Wolves
Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki (Japanese), Jacob Craner (English)

The guardian that watches over Wolvendom. While it initially introduces itself as a mysterious voice during Razor's character quest, Andrius quickly takes the form of a giant wolf, trying to attack the protagonists. Andrius is known as the Wolf of the North, one of the Four Winds chosen by Barbatos.

  • Badass in Distress: He is chained and nearly corrupted by an Abyssal Herald and while he manages to fight off the corruption for a while, he must be saved by the Traveler.
  • Blow You Away: In addition to his Cryo abilities, in the second phase of his boss battle, he will take on a different form and start using Anemo attacks as well.
  • Brought Down to Badass: While Andrius' spirit body does not have all the powers that he had while alive, he is still badass without them.
  • Heel Realization: Back when Decarabian was the Anemo Archon, Andrius kept the land of what's now Monsdstadt filled with blizzards and ice storms, forcing the humans to Decarabian for protection. After having turned down the position of Anemo Archon, he realized that all his blizzards did was extinguish life from the land, leading to him letting his powers flow freely into the land to protect it and its inhabitants.
  • Humans Are Flawed: While he personally considers them a disappointment and declined the position of Anemo Archon for Barbatos because Andrius thought he could not love them, he considers babies innocent and allows his wolves to raise them if they accept each other. In Razor's story quest, Andrius - who raised him - decides to let him go after the wolf feels the "wolf boy" has grown up and met human friends. Razor is now more "human" than "wolf".
  • An Ice Person: He has ice-elemental abilities, one of which involves freezing the ground, constantly inflicting the Cryo status effect.
  • No-Sell:
    • Andrius is completely immune to Cryo and Anemo attacks during his boss battle.
    • Back when Andrius declared war on Decarabian, he was unable to land even a scratch on the latter's city.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Mechanically Unusual Boss in this case. Unlike other Weekly Bosses, who are fought in domains where you can decide how powerful they are before taking them on, Andrius is fought out in the overworld and you don't get to decide his level, with it instead scaling off your World Level like most overworld enemies.
  • Mighty Glacier: In his second phase, he forgoes running around and jumping towards you in favour in staying in one place and unleash and plethora of wide AoE attacks that you have to defend against or dodge to be in range to land melee strikes.
  • Noble Wolf: Andrius is the guardian of Wolvendom and is also one of the Four Winds in Mondstadt. He takes the form of a giant wolf.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: The Flavor Text of items like the Spirit Locket of Boreas and Tail of Boreas confirm that his physical body is dead, hence why the Andrius encountered in Wolvendom manifests as a spirit, with the latter item describing the form you fight as being "comprised of wind and ice".
  • Physical God: Well, he used to be one. Thousands of years ago, he had power over the blizzards that raged across what's now Mondstadt and challenged Decarabian for control of the land. While it's unclear what exactly Andrius did after Decarabian was overthrown by Barbatos, it's implied that Andrius gave up his physical body to stop the blizzards and let life flourish.
  • Red Baron: His name is Andrius, but he is also known by his title of "Lupus Boreas", which can translate as "Wolf of the North" or "Wolf of the Northern Winds". Descriptions of items like the Spirit Locket of Boreas also name him as the "Great Wolf King of the North".
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Like most of the other gods he's named after a demon from the Ars Goetia, specifically Andras, who is often depicted as riding a wolf.
  • Shoo the Dog: He tells Razor not to interfere in the fight against the black wolves, citing his human origins. While this seems harsh, Razor has also just found new human friends, whom Andrius urges him to connect with. The 2.2 update also reveals that the invaders, rather than a particularly aggressive pack of normal wolves, are actually Rifthounds, which possess monstrous and dangerous abilities that Razor would have had to contend with if Andrius hadn't ordered him to stay out of the conflict.

    Dragon of the East

Dvalin, Dragon of the East

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_dvalin_full_artwork.png
Erstwhile King of the Skies
Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi (Japanese), Brook Chalmers (English)

A draconic guardian of Mondstadt and one of the Four Winds. At least he used to be, before he became known as "Stormterror", attacking humans indiscriminately and trying to destroy Mondstadt.
  • Androcles' Lion: Considering Venti's current profession as a bard with a lyre, the backstories and lore of certain items hint that he is the "friend" who woke up Dvalin from a deep slumber using the sound of his lyre. It was also thanks to the ballads that the people of Mondstadt now remember Dvalin and his deeds after having forgotten about him for centuries. Even before that incident, since Venti is the Anemo Archon who sought Dvalin in order to save Mondstadt from Durin, the two just basically scratched each other's backs in the past.
  • Animal Motifs: On top of the general animal motifs that go along with him being a dragon, he's also very likely based off the Glaucus Atlanticus, also known as a blue dragon, a species of sea slugs, specifically the shape of his body and wings. It's most apparent when seeing him fly overhead.
  • Arc Villain: Stopping him and purifying him is the driving plot point of the Prologue of the Teyvat Chapter Storyline.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Stormterror only takes damage by attacking the purple crystals on his body. The second phase of his boss fight requires you to destroy the one on his head.
  • Blow You Away: He has Anemo powers, which appear in his boss fight as tornadoes or strong gusts of wind.
  • Boss Arena Urgency: Take too long and every platform will be corrupted, forcing you to take damage 100% of the time. Furthermore, Stormterror will start raining projectiles down upon you that do not show up in fast runs. Have fun!
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The reason why Stormterror begins his rampage against Mondstadt is that he was wounded, deceived, and corrupted by the Abyss Order.
  • Break Meter: During Stormterror's boss battle, there's a separate meter that appears while he's attacking you. When you deplete that meter, he falls to the platform you're standing on, letting you reach his Tainted Blood crystal and damage him directly.
  • Catch a Falling Star: After the corruption has been taken out of him, Dvalin catches the Traveler, Paimon, Venti, Jean and Diluc on his back while they are falling from a great height.
  • Connected All Along: During the Traveler's sibling's recap of the story thus far, Enjou's remark on the restoration of Dvalin's sanity notes how different "these" Vishaps are from the the ones "down beneath the ocean". That nonchalant line confirms that Dvalin is a Vishap. Venti's description of his birth suggests that he is also the Anemo Sovereign.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Returns in patch 1.6's "Midsummer Island Adventure" story after his defeat in patch 1.0 to give Klee and company a ride to and from the archipelago between Liyue and Inazuma.
  • Dragons Are Divine: Before he was corrupted, Mondstadt revered him as one of the protectors known as the Four Winds, directly appointed by the Archon Barbatos. In truth, he is of the Vishap race, and heavily implied to be the Anemo Sovereign.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Dvalin is among one of the two notable observations on potential bubble worlds by Schicksal Overseer Otto Apocalypse at the end of Chapter 17 in Honkai Impact 3rdnote , more or less confirming that Genshin Impact exists as a parallel universe to HI3.
  • Foil: For Azhdaha, a dragon of the earth to Dvalin's being a dragon of the sky. Both were close friends and allies of their region's Archon only to turn against them out of anger at seemingly being thrown aside in favor of the humans that hurt them. But where Dvalin's fall was ultimately caused by Durin's poison and the Abyss Order corrupting him, and could be undone by Barbatos, Azhdaha's fall was caused by his own failing memory rather than an outside party, which no amount of help from Morax could stop. Reduced over time to emotional responses over reason and patience, Azhdaha lashed out when injured by human activity, forcing Morax to confront him and seal him away. And where Dvalin's legacy as a savior is able to be restored along with his sanity, Azhdaha's own heroism and service, while still being told about in stories, is marred by the necessary reminders that he remains dangerous, and cannot be released from his prison.
  • Final Boss: Of the Beta and of the Prologue in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: Before Version 1.2, there was a nasty bug in Stormterror's boss fight in which, you would clip through his neck due to geometry collision issues and be unable to climb it to reach his weak point. This made the boss fight nigh unplayable to those who do not have bow users to fall back on. Although since patched out on the PC and PS4 versions, there are reports of the glitch still happening on mobile phones.
  • Giant Flyer: Dvalin is big enough to ferry multiple people on his back while flying at a high altitude as shown in the climax of the prologue and the Midsummer Island Vacation event.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Upon being freed from the Abyss Order's corruption, he saves the player's party from falling to their deaths.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: The battleground crumbles when you defeat Dvalin near the end of the Prologue. Fortunately, he regains his sanity and catches the heroes before they plummet.
  • Marked Change: Stormterror's scales turn purple when he is corrupted. After the Traveler cleansed him from it, they revert to their usual greenish hue. Venti also blesses him again with Anemo as a sign of gratitude, causing Dvalin to glow cyan as he soars the skies of Mondstadt after the crisis is over.
  • More than Mind Control: The Abyss Order convinced a wounded and suffering Dvalin that Humans Are Bastards and that his old friend Venti, AKA Barbatos, betrayed him, making him go rogue and attack Mondstadt.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: Destructive as he is, Venti explains that destruction is not in his nature nor his will, but due to the 'poison' the Abyss Order has afflicted him with.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: One of the first scenes that introduce new players to the game's plot is of him creating a typhoon so huge that it practically covers the whole of the Mondstandt map under the influence of the Order of the Abyss.
  • Platform Battle: Stormterror's boss battle takes place on floating platforms, so there is a risk of taking damage every time you fall and respawn. Halfway through the fight, the platforms may get corrupted, causing your characters to take continuous damage unless you ride the wind currents and move on to the safer platforms. Take too long and every platform will get corrupted.
  • Puzzle Boss: It is obvious that you can use the wind currents to glide to platforms that are not hazardous. It may be less obvious that your melee fighters can climb onto Stormterror to hit his weak point.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Long ago, Dvalin won against Durin by piercing the latter's throat with his fangs, but at the cost of the shadow dragon's blood poisoning him. Unable to bear the pain, Dvalin fell unconscious for centuries and Mondstadt forgot his deeds. This trope is subverted when he woke up from the sound of his friend's lyre, and thanks to the ballads, the people of Mondstadt remembered him.
  • Red Baron: "Stormterror" is just another name coined by humans, and he is also known as the "Dragon of the East".
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: The dragons Dvalin and Durin take their names after dwarves from Norse Mythology.
  • Say My Name: After a bit of prodding and manipulation from an Abyss mage, he attacks his old friend with a furious "BAAAARRRRBAAAAAAATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSS!!!!!"
  • Tragic Villain: He became a villain entirely not of his own free will, but due to the Abyss Order poisoning him and convincing him that the humans no longer cared about him. Fortunately, Barbatos is able to set him straight.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Stormterror's boss fight in the Prologue's finale assesses your survivability aside from relying on DPS heroes. The corrupted platforms slowly deplete your characters' HP, while the boss has hard-hitting attacks and AoE abilities, encouraging you to slot a healer or stock up on food to restore HP. You also need to knock him out of the sky first with an archer before you can even properly reach his head to attack his weak point. Though you can also just use Venti, who joins your party for the fight, to shred Dvalin's health by the second platform. You have to beat the fight the hard way for any weekly rematches (7 adventure ranks later mind you).
  • Wind Is Green: One of the rare aversions in the game; Stormterror's Anemo-based attacks are colored pure blue instead of the standard teal or green seen in other depictions of Anemo energy.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Stormterror has painful blood clots on his back that continue to poison and corrupt him for as long as they still are there. It is the player's job to shoot them off to restore his sanity.

    Falcon of the West

Vennessa, Falcon of the West

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/npc_vennessa_9.png
Lion's Tooth
"We must fight and claim our own freedom. We can not beg for it. We must not kneel for it. Freedom given freely is only a guise for another shackle."

Vennessa was the hero who freed the nation from tyranny with the help of Barbatos, setting up the city of Mondstadt and the Knights of Favonius. She is also known as the first Dandelion Knight, with her legends now documented in books. Vennessa eventually ascended and became the Falcon of the West, watching over Mondstadt.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: She reached Celestia and literally became a falcon that watches over Mondstadt.
  • Famed In-Story: Vennessa is the founder of the Knights, and there are also songs about her, documented in the books titled "The Legend of Vennessa".
  • Fiery Redhead: Is red-headed and tempered, which are traits that remind Venti of the Muratans.
  • God Was My Copilot: Vennessa's rebellion started with a simple act of helping a wandering bard escape, after he'd insulted Lord Lawrence's son. This leads to her entire clan being sentenced to die fighting monsters outside the city, as an example to anyone that would dare challenge the Lawrence Clan's authority. Fortunately for Vennessa and the people of Mondstadt, the bard appears on the battlefield and reveals himself to be the Anemo Archon, Barbatos. With his aid, Vennessa drives off Ursa the Drake and goes on to lead a rebellion that frees Mondstadt.
  • Go-Go Enslavement: Her Stripperiffic slave outfit consists of a breastplate that still shows off her cleavage and midrif, a shackle on her right wrist, a loincloth, a stocking on her right leg as well as a ball and chain on her left ankle. She changes into an outfit similar to Jean's when she becomes the first Grandmaster of the Knights of Favonius.
  • Legendary Weapon: It is heavily hinted in the Aquila Favonia's descriptions that Vennessa is the weapon's original wielder and used it when she overthrew the aristocracy in Mondstadt.
  • Male Gaze: The prologue chapter of the webcomic has a panel focused on her legs and hips.
  • Naturalised Name: "Vennessa" sounds extremely European in origin compared to the other African or Mesoamerican names found in the Flavour Text of the Talking Stick, which mentions historical figures from Natlan. Given that her tribe was enslaved by the tyrannical Lawrence Clan, "Vennessa" is most likely not her birth name.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: After feeling insulted by her act of letting Venti go scot-free, Barca requested his father to buy Vennessa and her clan, making them slaves to the House of Lawrence.
  • Pals with Jesus: Venessa is buddies with Venti, Barbatos' mortal guise before and after her rebellion against Mondstadt's nobility.
  • Rags to Royalty: Venessa was formerly a slave of the Lawrence Clan before elevating to the Grandmaster of the new Knights of Favonius, the highest prestige following the fall of the nobility.
  • Red Baron: She's also known by the aliases "Lion's Tooth", "Lion of the South", "Falcon of the West", and "Flame-Haired Vennessa".
  • Self-Restraint: According to the "Shackles of the Dandelion Gladiator" flavor text, Venessa could have broken them but didn't to be able to keep helping her tribe.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: After becoming the first Grandmaster of the Knights of Favonius, Venessa ditches her slave armour for an outfit eerily similar to Jean, her successor in the far out future.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Out of all of the Four Winds, Vennessa is the only one that the player never meets in person with her story and appearances shown in books, the prequel webcomic, and Venti's Character Tale.

    Lion of the South

Lion of the South

A title that has been passed down through generations of Grand Masters (and Acting Grand Masters) of the Knights of Favonius. For more information on the current holder, visit Jean's entry on the Knights of Favonius page.

    Diluc

Diluc Ragnvindr / "Darknight Hero"

Introduced: September 28, 2020 (v1.0 "Welcome To Teyvat" [game launch])
Voiced by: Yang Ma (Chinese), Kensho Ono (Japanese), Choi Seung-hoon (Korean), Sean Chiplock (English)

The Dark Side of Dawn
Red Dead of Night
"For dawn to come, there must be those who dare to pierce the darkness with their light."

Rarity: 5★
Element: Pyro
Weapon: Claymore
Constellation: Noctua, the Owl

Former Cavalry Captain of the Knights of Favonius and proprietor of Dawn Winery, the largest of its kind in Mondstadt, as well as its flagship tavern Angel's Share. Having resigned from the Knights in disillusionment after some of his superiors tried to cover up details surrounding the death of his father Crepus in a monster attack orchestrated by the Fatui, he nevertheless continues to uphold his vow of protecting Mondstadt in his own way by moonlighting as a vigilante. After visiting his tavern with the bard Venti, he's one of the most important allies the Traveler makes in their arrival to Mondstadt, helping them and the Knights in the "Stormterror" incident.

Diluc takes his training as a Knight to heart long after his departure with fiery slashes. His Elemental Skill, Searing Onslaught, can be used up to thrice in succession within a window of time before they enter cooldown phase, allowing him to string in regular attacks in between, while his Elemental Burst, Dawn, unleashes a firebird that can drag away small- to medium-sized foes and temporarily infuses his regular attacks with Pyro.note
  • The Ace: Diluc received his Pyro Vision at the tender age of ten, and as a Knight of Favonius he trained himself so hard he rapidly rose up its ranks until he became the youngest Cavalry Captain in the Knights' history before he even turned eighteen. Even after his resignation, he is still renowned as the "uncrowned king of Mondstadt" (for being the owner of its largest wine production) and one of its strongest fighters.
  • Adaptation Deviation: While both the Japanese and Korean dubs stick to the original Chinese interpretation of his relationship with Kaeya as sworn brothers, the English localization changes that to a more West-friendly dynamic of adopted brothers.
  • All There in the Manual: The incident that drove him and Kaeya apart receives elaboration late into their character stories, as well as in the official manga, before it was discussed in-game during the "Hidden Strife" event.
  • Aloof Ally: With Jean and Kaeya, whom he still clearly cares for despite their soured relationship after his resignation from the Knights. He is willing to collaborate with them for a common goal of protecting Mondstadt and foiling the plots of those who would threaten it.
  • Animal Motif:
    • Owls. His Constellation is an owl, his mansion has owl busts, and he tends to prefer working at night as well.
    • To a lesser extent, the phoenix. Gameplay-wise, his Burst summons a firebird that flies onto his enemies, and his fourth-ascension passive is named Blessing of Phoenix. Story-wise, following the death of Crepus in a Fatui-orchestrated attack and the subsequent coverup by an inspector of the Knights (who was later outed as a traitor) and Kaeya's confession that he is a spy from Khaenri'ah, the young and idealistic All-Loving Hero died, from which arose a vengeful Byronic Hero; after years of attacking Fatui strongholds to learn the truth about his father's death, he returned home and swore to become its protector in the shadows, completing his rebirth as the famed "Darknight Hero." Fittingly, Diluc is a Pyro Vision holder, and the phoenix is often associated with fire.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Eagle-eyed players have noticed that the tea set on the dining table in Dawn Winery Manor is identical to the one used by the powerful Hexenzirkel witch N. The gilded patterns on her tea set also matches the carpet beneath the dining table and the shoulders of Diluc's default coat. This implies that N has been in contact with Diluc, though the nature of their relationship remains to be seen.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: The "Darknight Hero" spoken of in urban legend, and he wears the same snazzy suit both when protecting Mondstadt and as a playable unit.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Diluc is shown to be a skilled hand-to-hand fighter during his fight against the Abyss raid on Mondstadt's entrance, easily taking down a couple of Hilichurls using nothing but his fists. Sadly, he cannot do this in gameplay.
  • Boring, but Practical: Compared to other Pyro DPS units, Diluc's less complicated fighting style makes him reliable in almost every situation. As a claymore wielder, he can deal respectable damage even without using his Elemental Talents, crack through enemy shields any time of day, and can even mine ore nodes. While subsequent units of his archetype such as Klee, Yanfei, Hu Tao, Yoimiya, and Lyney tend to be Difficult, but Awesome Glass Cannons with higher damage ceilings, Diluc stands out with a much simpler playstyle while being much tankier in comparison. Not to mention that, similarly to Yanfei, unlike the other event-exclusive 5★ Pyro units, Diluc can be pulled from any banner, making it relatively easier to upgrade his Constellation and thus improve his viability.
  • Broken Pedestal: After his father's death, Eroch, an inspector of the Knights, told him to "conceal the truth", claiming that it is to keep the Knights' reputation in the public. A deeply outraged Diluc, who once believed in the Knights' brand of justice, was driven to Resign in Protest. By the time the Knights' upper echelon outed Eroch as a traitor, Diluc has long shown himself the door.
  • Byronic Hero: One of the most influential people in Mondstadt and enjoys high popularity throughout the country. After his father's death, he has become an Anti-Hero "with an attitude problem" (in Kaeya's words) who will stop at nothing to take down the Fatui, who he blames for his father's death.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: The player can hear an anecdote where Diluc drank the equivalent of a shot of vodka and, though keeping his composure for the rest of the dinner, ended up so drunk it took him three days to fully sleep it off. It was bad enough that rumors had it that the drink was poisoned.
  • Cop Hater: Diluc walked out on the Knights of Favonius after one of its inspectors (later outed as a traitor aligned with the Fatui) tried to cover up the circumstances behind his father's death, and he has had three years since then for his negative sentiments to fester. He started crusading at night since he no longer trusts the Knights to provide Mondstadt the protection it needs.
  • The Cowl: His Story Quest reveals that he is the "Darknight Hero," a vigilante who keeps the city safe after dark.
  • Crazy-Prepared: During his Story Quest, Huffman was sent to spy on him on the off chance that he is the Darknight Hero, so he produces a distraction that keep Huffman off his shoulder while he and the Traveler deal with an Abyss Order infiltration. When Huffman still suspects him and asks the customers if Diluc went somewhere, they insist that he did not leave the tavern at all. He reveals to the Traveler that the "customers" are all Dawn Winery staff... except Kaeya, who was there unnoticed the whole time.
  • Critical Hit Class: Diluc's Ascension stat is Critical Rate, which can reach 19.2% at his sixth.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: During his Story Quest, Diluc gets a cutscene where he blitzes through a group of hilichurls and Abyss Mages, massacring them effortlessly with a series of high-speed attacks. Right afterward, he joins your team as you fight more of each yourself, which takes longer. There is no obvious reason he could not have taken care of the rest of them the same way, without your help.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His color scheme is black and red, and yet he opposes both the Abyss Order and the Fatui, even if he isn't always very nice.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: On the night of his eighteenth birthday, Ursa the Drake, a notorious dragon, attacked his and his father Crepus's caravan in an ambush orchestrated by the Fatui, forcing Crepus to use a Delusion to protect him at the cost of overclocking to death. The resulting attempt of a coverup by the Knights' upper echelon (conducted by a traitor) drove a nigh-irreparable wedge between him and the Knights, especially his blood brother Kaeya.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments, and when he does, it's never to mince words, such as calling out the Knights for slacking on their duties, even going as far as to mock them in front of Jean, the Acting Grand Master. Paimon even lampshades it by calling his wording "dramatic".
Jean: "Hey Diluc, I heard that the Fatui have recently proclaimed you "Persona Non Grata"."
Diluc: (scoffs) "What an honor. Nobody was ever proclaimed "persona grata" by the Fatui anyway."
  • Deaf Composer: His Character Story points out that he does not drink alcohol despite his line of work. Not only does he dislike the taste of alcohol, but he also has incredibly poor tolerance, as a single shot of a strong drink made him sick for three days.
  • Defense Mechanism Superpower: His second Constellation upgrade, Searing Ember, bestows upon him up to three stacks of a 10% boost to his Attack stat and 5% to his attacking speed for ten seconds (with at least a 1.5-second interval, and to a maximum of respectively 30% and 15%) whenever he takes a hit.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": The title of "Darknight Hero" makes him uncomfortable, so when Paimon decides to call him that...
Paimon: Huzzah! The Great Mystery of the Darknight Hero of Mondstadt — we solved it! Now then, Mr. Dark-night-Hero-!
Diluc: Please, stop calling me that. Seriously, it makes me uncomfortable.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Though he very much averts the Fiery Redhead trope, his bright red hair does match his element, Pyro.
  • Expy: Like Batman, Diluc is a vigilante clad in black who defends his home turf at night, has a day job as a businessman born to old wealth, and insists on keeping his identity a secret, complete with his "Darknight Hero" moniker sounding similar to Batman's own "Dark Knight."
  • Family Business: Diluc inherited the winery and tavern from his late father.
  • Famous Ancestor: The Ballads of the Squire book series tells the story of a certain "Ragnvindr Knight" from Vennessa's time a thousand years ago. The description of Amos's Bow also mentions another Ragnvindr Knight who fought alongside Amos, a nameless bard, and Barbatos prior to his ascent as Archon to topple Decarabian's tyranny a millennium further back.
  • Fiery Stoic: Out of the Pyro Vision holders, Diluc is the most stoic one. He was more enthusiastic in the past back when he got his Vision.
  • Fire Is Masculine: One of the launch characters representing Pyro is a tall, handsome, rugged man who wields a greatsword, and is shown to be one of the best swordsmen in Mondstadt.
  • Flaming Sword:
    • Each claymore strike of his Skill is wreathed in flames.
    • His Burst infuses his claymore with Pyro for eight seconds after his main attack. His fourth-ascension passive, Blessing of Phoenix, extends its duration to twelve seconds and adds a 20% boost to his Pyro Damage Bonus.
  • Foil: He and Jean are well-loved public figures, are two of the best swordsmen in Mondstadt, and fight to keep it and its people safe, albeit in different ways. Diluc is a vigilante who does his work in the cover of night, while Jean does hers in broad daylight as leader of its local law enforcement body; Diluc has little qualms resorting to morally questionable methods such as torture, something Jean refuses to stoop to; and Diluc's wealth and solitary activity allow him to protect Mondstadt on his own terms, while Jean's duties have often caused her to work herself to exhaustion. Even visually they contrast, with Diluc wearing mostly black clothing in contrast to Jean's mostly white.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite being presented as a skilled hand-to-hand fighter during the Abyss raid on Mondstadt's entrance, his playstyle is solely comprised of using his claymore and Vision for attacking, and nothing more.
  • Good Is Not Soft: In his crusade to protect Mondstadt from the Fatui and the Abyss Order, he is not above using torture as a means of getting information.
    • When helping the Traveler recover the Holy Lyre der Himmel from the Fatui, it is heavily implied that he beat the whereabouts of the Lyre out of a Fatuus.
    • During his Story Quest, he "persuades" an Abyss Mage into deciphering the calling card he received from the Order.
  • Gratuitous Latin: Diluc and his father Crepus are respectively named after the Latin words diluculum ("dawn") and crepusculum ("dusk").
  • Guile Hero: In a separate way from Kaeya; he uses Dawn Winery and Angel's Share to gather intel, in a way to find potential threats to Mondstadt.
  • Hypocrite: He chides Rosaria for her vigilante activities when she's supposed to be a nun, but she makes it clear she knows Diluc is also a vigilante who's supposed to be a businessman.
  • Internal Homage: Like many of the other Mondstadt characters, his unique Party Setup pose is a reference to his portrait.
  • It's Personal: Part of why he despises the Fatui is because he had a history with them. The prequel webcomic shows that on the night of his eighteenth birthday, they sabotaged his family's carriage on the road by luring a monster to it, forcing his father to sacrifice himself to protect him. He then spent years going around Teyvat finding the truth behind his father's death, leading him to destroy Fatui strongholds.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: In his Story Quest, Diluc burns an Abyss Mage into divulging information to him. You can also convince him to do this repeatedly!
  • Jerkass Has a Point: His criticism towards the Knights of Favonius' efficiency isn't without basis, and he is indirectly proven right when La Signora and the Fatui attack Venti and the Traveler in the front of the Favonius Cathedral, with nary a Knight within view. It can also be observed that most regular Knights are violating rules found in their handbook, more so compared to their Millelith and Shogunate counterparts. Prominent characters such as Amber and Klee are not safe from this either note .
  • Jerkass to One: To his former employers, the Knights of Favonius, who he often criticizes for inefficiency or uselessness.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • Diluc's no smiling cookie in the story proper, but his character voice-overs reveal a softer, friendlier side to him. While he at first treats the Traveler like another client, he does remain quite polite towards them. Raising his Friendship and Ascension levels also causes him to become much more personable, to the point he ends up calling them "partner" at Friendship Level 6, and outright calls them "friend" in his last Ascension Level.
    • Diluc often criticizes or mocks the Knights of Favonius for being useless despite being formerly one of them. However, he still cares for the people of Mondstadt, protecting them in his own secret ways even when the Knights are not involved.
    • At the end of Jean's Story Quest, though reluctant to sponsor any event held by the Knights, he makes an exception when he lent Angel's Share for a surprise thanksgiving party for Jean, his former junior back when he was a Knight, as his gesture of appreciation for her hard work.
    • For all of his bad blood with the Knights, the "Hidden Strife" event shows that he's willing to work with them on an individual basis. One of his letters is for Albedo, whom he communicates with about Ley Lines. It's made clear as well in the game that he doesn't blindly hate the Knights based on his interactions with Jean and Kaeya. He even praises Eula for her determination to clear her family name in his voice line for her.
  • "Just Frame" Bonus: Diluc's fourth Constellation upgrade, Flowing Flame, increases the power of the second consecutive use of his Skill after at least two seconds and no later than four by 40% (meaning the third consecutive Skill will have an 80% boost at best), while his his sixth, Flaming Sword, Nemesis of the Dark, increases both the damage potency and speed of his next two normal attacks by 30% within six seconds after using his Skill, incentivizing Both players to use his Skill more methodically.
  • Knowledge Broker: He joined an underground intelligence network in the past, which helps keep him in the loop on various happenings in Mondstadt. By the events of the game, said network extended beyond commercial matters. During his Story Quest, Diluc already knew about the Abyss Order's declaration of war even before the Traveler and Paimon are about to relay it to him.
  • Lag Cancel: Players can weave his Skill in between attacks, but its most notable feature is its ability to cancel the recovery from his fourth strike. His sixth Constellation upgrade (see "Just Frame" Bonus, above) allows him to buff the damage and speed of his next two normal attacks within six seconds; with the way it works, players are expected to use his Skill after every two strikes of his normal attack.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: There's no denying that Diluc is a well-groomed man with a chiseled face and hair that reaches his upper back.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "dawn" and he is the owner of Dawn Winery. His Elemental Burst is literally called Dawn and, when he uses it, the screen tints bright orange; if done at night, it is as if the light of dawn has really come for a moment.
  • Mighty Glacier: Diluc hits incredibly hard with his attacks and is durable enough to take a hit, but as a claymore user, his attacks are also fairly sluggish.
  • Mythology Gag: He's partly based on (and is a Gender Flip of) Himeko Murata of Honkai Impact 3rd. Both are red-haired greatsword wielders associated with fire and alcohol (albeit Himeko loves it, while Diluc does not), and who abandoned their childhood dreams to seek a new direction in life following their fathers' deaths.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He hardly ever smiles. Klee's line for him lampshades it.
Klee: "He's one of the weird grown-ups. He's so grumpy all the time... Why does he never smile?"
  • Pet the Dog: Klee is one of the few people besides the Traveler whom Diluc has a soft spot for. During the "Midsummer Island Adventure" event, while he believes the Dodo-King isn't real, he ultimately humors her belief otherwise. Also, the "Hidden Strife" event reveals in a letter from Alice that, instead of getting angry with her for breaking into Dawn Winery and making a mess while chasing Crystalflies, he personally escorted her back and even gave her a bottle of grape juice.
  • Power Stereotype Flip: A Pyro Vision holder who is a Fiery Stoic; see above.
  • Privacy by Distraction: During his Story Quest, the Knights assigned Huffman to keep tabs on him at nighttime on the off-chance that he is the Darknight Hero. Diluc creates a bait which involves the Traveler luring Slimes into the side gate of the City which Huffman had to deal with while he and the Traveler deal with the main issue at that time, the Abyss Order and their hilichurl lackeys waiting at the front gate.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Inverted. He is firmly on the heroes' side, even if he isn't always very nice.
  • Red Baron: Played with. Despite working from the shadows, his feats have caused the Mondstadt folk to refer to them as the work of the "Darknight Hero".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. Much like Beidou, his red eyes stand at complete odds with his heroic nature.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Despite their contrasting color schemes, Diluc is the stoic, serious Blue to Kaeya's playful, laidback Red.
  • Re-Power: He discarded his Vision when he left the Knights of Favonius. In the prequel manga, Diluc used the same Delusion that belonged to his father. When he returned to Mondstadt, Diluc decided to take his Vision once more, which Kaeya secretly smuggled back into his possession from within a vase, under the pretense that he was making up for breaking a vase earlier.
  • Resource Reimbursement: His utility passive, Tradition of the Dawn Knight, refunds 15% of ores used when forging claymores.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: When the Knights of Favonius ordered him to cover up the reason for his father's death, he abandoned his (extremely high) position in anger. Thanks to how popular and wealthy he is, the incident did not affect his social standing in the slightest.
  • Self-Deprecation: Whenever he is in public, Diluc frowns in disgust if he hears a mention of the "Darknight Hero". Diluc himself is the Darknight Hero praised by the citizens. Elzer knows his secret identity and thinks Diluc is just keeping an act of disapproval to protect himself. The truth is that he did not create the identity and he thought the name is simply stupid.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: His Burst fires a phoenix-shaped Sword Beam toward his enemies.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Wears a formal attire that isn't stopping him anytime soon from moonlighting as a Vigilante Man.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his blood brother Kaeya. Diluc has a Pyro vision, a red-and-black color scheme, and skin so pale it is almost white; Kaeya has a Cryo vision, a blue-and-white color scheme, and dark skin. Diluc lost faith in the Knights of Favonius and left, while Kaeya stayed.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Diluc's Skill is a Three-Strike Combo, while his Burst is a Sword Beam/Spell Blade hybrid. Simple though they look, as a claymore wielder his attacks hit extremely hard, and he can weave in his Skill between attacks, not to mention effectively having about a three-second cooldown per use on average.
  • Situational Damage Attack: Diluc's first Constellation upgrade, Conviction, gives him a 15% damage boost against enemies with over half their HP.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Early in his vigilante career, Diluc has gained a reputation for hunting down the Fatui. Fittingly, Fatui Insignias are among his Ascension materials.
  • Starter Mon: He is one of your starting character cards in Genius Invokation TCG, along with Kaeya and Sucrose.
  • Sword Beam: His Burst unleashes one shaped like a phoenix that can drag away small- to medium-sized foes as well as temporarily infuse his claymore with fire.
  • Sworn Brothers: The Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dubs referred to him and Kaeya as "sworn brothers."
  • Take a Third Option: His dislike of the Fatui is so much he goes with this quote.
"If I were to choose between 'eating a Cryo Slime' or 'Joining the Fatui...' ...I'd prefer to be crushed to death by a meteorite."
  • The Teetotaler: He mentions that he dislikes the taste of alcohol in his mouth and would rather enjoy a glass of grape juice. According to an anecdote, he had to drink an extraordinarily strong alcohol to keep face; he could keep himself composed, but then he fell sick for three days afterward. Kaeya even calls Diluc a teetotaler during a Hangout with the former.
  • Three-Strike Combo: His Skill is a series of three Pyro-imbued slashes. Uniquely for the trope, he can insert some normal attacks in between each slash to add to his damage. In Genius Invokation TCG, the third use of this Skill in a single round increases its damage by 2 points.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A pair of variants:
    • His first-ascension passive, Relentless, halves the stamina cost of his charged attacks from 40 points per second to 20, as well as extends the duration of his barrage from five seconds to eight.
    • His third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Fire and Steel and Phoenix, Harbinger of Dawn, add three levels to, respectively, his Skill and Burst.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In his younger years, Diluc was very energetic and enthusiastic about being a Knight of Favonius, more befitting his Vision (which he got at an early age). But the death of his father changed everything, no less due to the circumstances around it, that made him grow cynical and bitter.
  • Vigilante Man: He protects the city from monsters and criminals at night as the "Darknight Hero." He did not choose the name for himself (and finds the title dumb), and did not expect to become the stuff of urban legends. It also connects to how he dislikes the Knights of Favonius because they are a Slave to PR tied too much with the "diplomacy" business.
  • Weapon Specialization
    • In most cutscenes, Diluc can be seen wielding the Favonius Greatsword (4★), which he may have come from his time as a Knight of Favonius. The weapon enhances his ability to trigger his Burst faster, both through its Ascension substat of Energy Recharge (13.3–61.3%) and its "Windfall" passive which gives his critical hits a 60–100% chance to generate 6 Energy for the wielder, triggered at least every 12 seconds without refinement (which can fall to 6 seconds at its fifth and final stage).
    • His standard Wish artwork portrays him wielding the Bloodtainted Greatsword (3★), which amplifies his Pyro damage output through its Ascension substat of Elemental Mastery (41–187 points) and its "Bane of Fire and Thunder" passive, which increases damage against enemies affected by Pyro or Electro by 12–24%.
    • His "Red Dead of Night" alternate outfit depicts him wielding the Wolf's Gravestone (5★), which further emphasizes his brute-force style of combat through its Ascension substat of Attack (10.8–49.6%) and its "Wolfish Tracker" passive, which increases its wielder's Attack stat by 20–40%, as well as boosts those of the party by 40–80% for twelve seconds whenever he hits enemies with less than 30% of their HP, activated once every half a minute.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: When Diluc was still young, his comrades and the citizens praised him for all his accomplishments as a Knight of Favonius. However, his greatest motivation comes from hearing the praises of Crepus.
  • Wine Is Classy: He's a classy and dignified young entrepreneur who owns and oversees a winery and tavern. That said, the manga suggests Diluc is not fond of wine himself, as he serves juice to Kaeya while serving as the bartender of Angel's Share. When you talk to a bartender in the tavern, he mentions that Diluc is simply continuing his father's work.

    Adelinde

Adelinde

The head maid of the Ragnvindr estate.
  • Team Mom: Of the Dawn Winery's Management, and the two maids as well.

    Connor

Connor

A winemaker and a longtime employee for Dawn Winery.
  • Expy: If Diluc can be compared to Batman, Connor is his Alfred Pennyworth as a longtime family servant since the days of Crepus.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Played for Laughs in one branch for Diona's Hangout Event. When he initially drank an exotic wine made from the Traveler (at Diona's suggestion), he fainted from such a terrible taste but suddenly sprang back to life seconds later.
  • Secret-Keeper: One of the few who knows about Diluc's identity as the Darknight Hero, and even aids him in concocting an elemental bait.

    Crepus

Crepus Ragnvindr

The previous head of Dawn Winery who was the biological father of Diluc and adopted father of Kaeya. His untimely death causes the conflict between Crepus's sons.
  • An Arm and a Leg: A close look at the panel of Diluc staring in horror at Crepus' corpse shows that the latter is missing his right forearm after he blocked Ursa the Drake from attacking Diluc.
  • Deadly Upgrade: His usage of a Delusion allowed him to fend off Ursa the Drake, but the power backfired on him and killed him.
  • Death by Origin Story: His death, along with Eroch's covering up the incident to conceal the truth and the conflict with Kaeya regarding his Khaenri'ahn origins, contributed to Diluc's start of vigilantism.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Has always been shown to be supportive and encouraging towards Diluc. He also took in Kaeya and raised him like his own, causing Kaeya to become conflicted regarding his loyalties towards Khaenri'ah.
  • Fading Away: The lower half of his body is shown to be turning transparent when Kaeya arrives on scene after his death, and the next page shows that eventually there was nothing for Diluc to hold but ashes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Gives his life protecting Diluc with his Delusion and driving away Ursa the Drake when the monster attacked the carriage they were traveling in.
  • Hidden Eyes: His eyes are always framed in shadow in the manga.
  • No Body Left Behind: Slowly turned into ashes after his death.
  • Reduced to Dust: His fate after dying from a lethal attack from Ursa the Drake.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Diluc shares the same shade of red hair as him.
  • The Voice: The ending cutscene of the Of Ballads and Brews event has Diluc recalling Crepus praising and saying that he would always be proud of him.

Trial by Fire
"I was born unlucky. That's just the way it is, and I've lived with it so long now that I'm just used to it. But you know what? Maybe it's a good thing. It means I know that whatever luck I do have left is gonna run out sooner rather than later... so I'd better make the most of my life while it lasts!"

Rarity: 4★
Element: Pyro
Weapon: Sword
Constellation: Rota Calamitas, the Wheel of Misfortune

A member of the Mondstadt Adventurers' Guild and sole remaining member of his own adventure team. Bennett is infamous for his bad luck and secretly labelled as the cause for multiple unfortunate incidents.

In defiance of his bad luck, Bennett tries his best to contribute to his party with damage-dealing and providing support. His Elemental Skill, Passion Overload, is a fiery slash he can charge to increase his hits to three, with the third hit able to knock back foes but also himself, while his Elemental Burst, Fantastic Voyage, is a jumping slam that burns surrounding foes and generates an Inspiration Field, within which allies are imbued with a Pyro effect and can either heal them if their HP is low or boost their Attack otherwise.note
  • Achilles' Heel: On one hand, his Burst makes Bennett a valuable pick for the Spiral Abyss. However, it comes with limitations that can manifest themselves in individually problematic ways:
    • Unlike most healers, Bennett can only heal one ally at a time. This isn't usually a big deal, since there is only one active character at a time, and the Inspiration Field's healing waves are fast enough to rapidly put his allies back into fighting shape while cycling through them. However, in situations where the entire party is constantly taking damage off-field as well, such as the Corrosion effect, his lack of wide-ranging healing becomes a lot more noticeable.
    • Electro is likewise problematic for Bennett, as the Inspiration Field constantly applies a Pyro effect onto allies within. This means that even a single stray Electro attack will inflict Overload on them, interrupting them at best and even launching them out of the Field at worst.
    • Also, unlike most healers, Bennett's Burst is his only method of doing so, and even then it is limited to allies within the Inspiration Field. This makes him an often weak pick in co-op play, since he forces other players to group around him in order to reap the benefits, and Domain challenges often force parties to spread themselves out across the battlefield, where anyone who is injured will have to run to him for healing, in contrast to the likes of Barbara, Qiqi, or Kokomi, who can heal their allies simply by attacking. In essence, picking Bennett in co-op usually demands a level of coordination that's difficult to attain, let alone master.
  • All-Loving Hero: Bennett is a cheerful lad who takes things in stride and doesn't have a mean bone in his body to the point that he simply laughs off Royce telling him that he's an active detriment to adventurers.
  • Area of Effect: Besides dealing Pyro damage upon impact, his Burst creates an Inspiration Field that either heals his allies whenever they have less than 70% HP or bestows an Attack bonus equivalent to that of Bennett otherwise. Bennett's first Constellation upgrade, Grand Expectation, removes the HP-based restriction, in addition to a further Attack boost based on 20% of Bennett's.
  • Badass Adorable: Bennett is a very cute boy who can seriously pull his weight in combat in spite of his constant misfortune.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Whenever he appears in the story you can be guaranteed that he'll be the butt of many jokes. This does not mean that he is weak. During the "Shadows Amidst Snowstorms" event, when the fake Albedo attacks the group, Bennett is able to expertly dodge his ice attacks then shatter it all with his Burst. And this is all while dazed from falling off a cliff mere minutes ago.
  • Blessed with Suck: His Burst is indeed very powerful, making him a reliable support character. Its Pyro infusion is also useful as Anti-Debuff... but Pyro is one of the most reactive elements in the game, so players must take care when fighting certain enemies who can deal massive damage thanks to Melt or Vaporize, or knock you away with Overload.
  • Born Unlucky: The boy is just bad luck personified (which he himself lampshades in one of his "More About" voice-overs, quoted above). His birthday is Leap Day; his Constellation translates to "Wheel of Misfortune"; his specialty dish is a half-burnt egg (though somehow it does have slightly better effects than the original); and most endings to his Hangout Event tree typically involve a level of misfortune, ranging from mild (missing a discount) to worse (getting stuck in a dungeon with no known way out).
Fischl: "Ah, the ill-starred young man... My Auge der Verurteilung has seen with unmistakable clarity, how his heart ails at being forsaken by the world.
Oz: Someone needs to keep an eye on the unlucky fellow."
  • Casting Gag: Ryōta Ōsaka, Bennett's Japanese voice actor, also voiced Percival of Granblue Fantasy, another swordsman associated with fire and capable of receiving an attack buff proportional to his remaining HP, a straightforward skill that has a notably high damage multiplier that gets more chances to activate when used in tandem with his charged attacks, and also appointed the main character as vassal without their consent, like how Bennett states the Traveler is now part of his adventure team when befriended.
  • Charged Attack: In its base form, his Skill is a simple Pyro-enhanced slash; when charged, each level increases his number of hits, and at the second and highest level, the third slash creates an explosion that blows enemies and himself away (though mercifully he will take no damage), with increasing cooldown time depending on charge level (five seconds in its base form, with an additional 2.5 per charge, for a maximum of ten). His first-ascension passive, Rekindle, reduces its cooldown time by 20% (hence at least four seconds plus two per level, for a maximum of eight); that for his fourth, Fearnaught, allows the Inspiration Field to further halve the cooldown time (hence at least two seconds plus one per level, for a maximum of four), in addition to negating Bennett's blowback from the second charge; and his fourth Constellation upgrade, Unexpected Odyssey, allows the first-charge form to launch another fiery slash with damage worth 135% of the second slash, hence identical to the third slash of the second-charge form sans the blowback.
  • Children Are Innocent: Despite being a teenager, Bennett is one of the only three characters in the Mondstadt cast who believes Fischl is a princess from a mysterious kingdom, with the other two being Klee and Noelle.
  • Combat Medic: The Inspiration Field either heals allies while their HP is low or boost their Attack otherwise.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: The first elderly adventurer who adopted Bennett died from severe injuries, with his final words mentioning the word "adventure." Since then, senior members of the Mondstadt Adventurers' Guild raised Bennett like their own son.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: His fourth-ascension passive, Fearnaught, confers upon the Inspiration Field the ability to halve the cooldown time of his Skill, in addition to flinching resistance.
  • Covered with Scars: Downplayed. He does have a large scar on his left shoulder, but no other real visible ones after that.
  • Critical Status Buff: His second Constellation upgrade, Impasse Conqueror, boosts his Energy Recharge rate by 30% whenever his HP falls below 70%.
  • Cute Little Fangs: His official art reveals he has these.
  • Daddy's Girl: A gender-flipped example, as his voice lines make clear. He may only have adopted "dads," but he loves them all the same.
  • Death Is Such an Odd Thing: His Character Stories have him ponder about what death truly means or feels like. He got a bit fearful when he thought about it, but he then thought that if an "adventurer's death" is a good one, then it must be an adventurer's final fortune... and then he went on to think that "not that fortune has anything to do with him." With that, he just stopped thinking about death altogether and goes on to find his next treasure.
  • Determinator: Bennett's passion offsets his penchant for misfortune, as reflected in his playing style.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: The third level of his Skill is strong enough to send himself flying backwards. Even its second level has impressive strength behind it, being powerful enough to send adult Vishaps flying.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: What granted him his Vision. Bennett was near-death after yet another adventure gone wrong and for all his work, was left empty-handed, but he refused to give in to despair about his circumstances or horrible luck. He woke up with a Pyro Vision that cauterized his wounds and saved his life.
  • Elemental Personalities: Has a Pyro Vision and is quite the passionate, excitable guy that doesn't let even the worst of his luck keep his mood down.
  • Fire Is Masculine: When compared to Barbara, whom he's seen with occasionally. While not as overtly masculine as Diluc, he's still a hot-headed adventurer who doesn't show his frustration with his bad luck openly and is an offensive support who can still deal decent damage.
  • Flaming Sword: His Skill coats his sword with fire and can be charged up to two levels for as much as three slashes, with the third triggering an explosion. His fourth Constellation upgrade, Unexpected Odyssey, allows him to continue his half-charged slash sequence with another strike with a normal attack; this strike is identical to the Skill's fully-charged form, but it doesn't trigger an explosion and deals lesser damage.
  • Genre Refugee: He's a plucky if unlucky guy, with goggles and is Conveniently an Orphan, and his adventure team is a Club Stub, checking off all the tropes of a Stock Shōnen Hero, down to his fiery elemental motif.
  • Good Is Dumb: Bennett is a good guy and all, but he is also slow on the uptake. He does not realize that the other members of his team abandoned him over his bad luck and takes Fischl's wild stories about being from another dimension at face value.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Has a pair of goggles that never do anything other than sit on his head.
  • Having a Blast: His Burst and the second-charge form of his Skill respectively begin and end with huge explosion, the latter having the drawback of blowing him away unless he has either unlocked his fourth-ascension passive, which allows the Inspiration Field to negate the blowback, or if he has Elemental Shields or his interruption resistance buffed (through various means).
  • Heal It With Fire: Fantastic Voyage is able to heal party members for up to 70% of their HP. Furthermore, gaining his Pyro vision allowed Bennett to close his own wounds and save his life shortly after gaining it.
  • Immune to Flinching: His fourth-ascension passive, Fearnaught, allows the Inspiration Field to negate Bennett's blowback from the fully-charged form of his Skill, in addition to a Cooldown Manipulation effect (see above).
  • Ironic Name: Bennett is a derivative of Benedict, meaning "blessed." He's anything but.
  • Jack of All Stats: His stats are quite balanced and his skillset can fill all the role for the team by himself if needed, Benny's adventure team consisting of only himself.
  • The Jinx: Every other member of "Benny's Adventure Team" secretly left him because he is a Doom Magnet. Even him mentioning the clear weather causes it to rain suddenly. He cannot even cook eggs without charring them into a crisp, if his specialty dish implies anything. Fortunately, his bad luck does not impact gameplay so you don't have to worry about weather changes or terrible loot while having him around.
  • Lethal Chef: While gameplay-wise he can cook as well as any character, Bennett is not a particularly capable cook, to say the least. Aside from his unique dish being a slightly burnt egg, one route of his Hangout Event tree has him cook up a purple blob that gives food poisoning to whoever eats it (which, depending on the ending, is either Royce or Benny himself).
  • Locked in a Room: Or in his case, a jail cell with Razor. This occurred during the Windblume event, but he and Razor hold no animosity towards each other for this incident, with Bennett even giving Razor his food.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Subverted. Initially, he seems unaware that most of his team left him on account of the bad luck he brings, and that Katheryne simply keeps records of "Benny's Adventure Team" on the books out of pity. However, both his high Friendship Level dialogue and the start of his Hangout Event tree reveal that he is already aware of both.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Being Born Unlucky is one thing, but the sheer amount of bad luck that follows in Bennett's wake and the fact that it can outright alter the weather would strongly suggest that he's legitimately cursed.
  • The Magnificent: He's known as "Bennett the Unlucky."
  • Meaningful Name: He's named after the Bennett Fracture, which is why he is so associated with the thumbs-up sign.
  • The Millstone: Bennett's very presence will either guarantee that an unpleasant situation is about to get worse or that the loot will be incredibly crappy (Bennett considers a couple of vegetables and a single mora to be great since that is what he typically gets as loot).
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: He may have a slender build but is strong enough to launch normally unlaunchable enemies like Mitachurls, Geovishaps, etc. into the air with his half and fully charged Passion Overload Elemental Skill.
  • Navel Window: His outfit exposes his navel area.
  • Necessary Drawback: He can only heal HP up to 70%, and even that is locked to his Burst. A wise decision in hindsight, as it can also deal huge damage on enemies and apply a big attack boost to allies and a burning effect on everyone around the circle. (Because then there would be no point in using dedicated healers like Diona, Qiqi, Barbara, and Kokomi).
  • Nice Guy: Bennett's a sweet kid who takes his bad luck in stride, and besides that, he is overall friendly to a lot of people which includes Fischl.
  • Odd Friendship: Bennett, an eternally upbeat misfortune magnet, is friends with Barbara, a lovely deaconess and songstress; Fischl, a wildly imaginative girl with a raven familiar; and Razor, a Wild Child Raised by Wolves. Fittingly enough, he has a Fire/Water Juxtaposition with the former and a Lightning/Fire Juxtaposition with the latter two courtesy of their Visions.
  • Pain to the Ass: During the "Shadows Amidst Snowstorms" event, Bennett accidentally falls off the mountain thanks to his bad luck. His landing isn't comfy.
"Whoa!!! Ouch... Ow, my butt!... What is this shard of ice doing here!"
  • Parental Abandonment: His character story shows that his birth parents abandoned him when he was a baby, and someone from the Adventurer's Guild took him in.
  • Perennially Overshadowed Birthday: Bennett is already The Jinx with a lot of bad luck, but to compound this even further, his birthday is on February 29th, i.e. Leap Day, so he was literally Born Unlucky. He laments that he can't fully celebrate his birthday every year like everyone else, so to compensate for his "lack of a birthday", he sends his birthday letters to the Traveler on February 28th instead.
  • Pointless Bandaid: He has one that rests on his nose.
  • The Pollyanna: A lesser man will break in the face of all the misfortune in Bennett's life and career. Bennett himself takes it with a smile and a thumbs up.
  • Power Up Letdown: Bennett's sixth Constellation upgrade, Fire Ventures with Me, allows the Inspiration Field to infuse Pyro onto his allies' regular attacks. Unfortunately, this is prone to messing with your Elemental Reactions and/or infusions as well as physical damagers, and once the upgrade is activated, it is permanent and you're stuck with it forever. While the effect is useful in certain team compositions, it reduces the number of compositions Bennett can be on, leading people to either regret having activated it, or not activate it and be forced to deal with the permanent "!" icon on their Characters screen. That said, characters whose Elemental Talents have a "conversion" effect (such as Xiao, Itto, Ayato, the Raiden Shogun, Nilou, etc.) are immune to this effect, as their innate element cannot be overridden while the Burst is active; as it stands, those whose Talents merely offer "infusion" effects (e.g., Keqing, Chongyun, Ayaka, full-Constellation Kazuha, etc.) will have these still overridden.
  • Quieter Than Silence: One of his idle animations in the character screen is him enthusiastically proclaiming "Benny's Adventure Team, assemble!", only to have no one responding except for the wind.
  • Raised by the Community: Bennett was found and raised by elder members of the Mondstadt Adventurers' Guild, and he refers to all of them as his fathers. As they got older, Bennett now is the one taking care of them at the retirement home.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: He loves meaty dishes, as said in his voiceline about his favorite food.
"Meat! Meat is the best sustenance there is. Chicken-Mushroom Skewers, Steaks, and Sweet Madames are all my specialties. You won't go hungry if you come adventuring with me, that's for sure!"
  • Riddle for the Ages: During the first quest of the "Invitation of Windblume" event, he was among those seeking Venti's guidance for writing a love poem. However, the intended recipient of his poem is left ambiguous.
  • Significant Birthdate: Bennett is so unlucky even his birthday is on February 29th. The game at least celebrates his birthday on February 28th whenever it is not leap year.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • In-story, Bennett is considered horribly unlucky and bad to be around. Using Bennett is a case of making damn sure luck has nothing to do with what happens. His Skill can backfire if he charges too long, while his Burst can make your characters trigger Elemental Reactions you don't want, especially if you have a full Constellation on him, and the Pyro application can make you take a far worse hit if an outlier lands a shot.
    • Bennett is Covered in Scars and frequently says he needs bandages if low on HP. The Inspiration Field can only heals allies up to 70% of their HP, so players need to either make up the rest or just accept the truncated healing.
  • Spell Blade: His sixth Constellation upgrade, Fire Ventures Within Me, allows the Inspiration Field to imbue a Pyro effect on melee (i.e., sword, claymore, or polearm) fighters. This can be a letdown in certain situations, however, as certain characters would prefer to keep their normal attacks deal physical or other elemental damage, and this effect may ruin said strategy.
  • Sprint Shoes: Played with. His utility passive, It Should Be Safe... shaves 25% off of the duration any Expedition to Mondstadt he is sent in.
  • Status Buff: The Inspiration Field can either boost the party's Attack equivalent to Bennett's base stat thereof while their HP is above 70% or heal them otherwise. In addition, his fourth-ascension passive, Fearnaught, allows it to halve the cooldown time of his Skill as well as negate the blowback from its fully-charged form.
  • Stepford Smiler: If Fischl's voiceline about him is any indication, Bennett's constant misfortune does cause him grief beneath his carefree attitude, but considering that this is Fischl we're talking about here, this should be taken with a grain of salt. Then again, since it's Fischl we're talking about, there may be a kernel of truth to her claim after all.
  • Support Party Member: While he's capable of being a serviceable damage-dealer, Bennett truly shines when creating Inspiration Fields, within which his allies are either healed if their HP is below 70% or gain an Attack boost otherwise, as well as imbuing everyone in the field with Pyro, allowing for both removing an elemental debuff and elemental reaction strategies. His first Constellation upgrade, Grand Expectation, removes the HP restriction for Attack boosting and strengthens the boost itself.
  • Taught by Experience: His misfortunes during adventures have toughened him and made him more knowledgeable about survival tactics. Oz, Barbara, and even Varka are surprised by his knowledge and mettle.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Despite his sheer misfortune, he has some occasional good luck coming his way. For starters, the fact that he was blessed with a Pyro Vision indicates that he was deemed worthy enough by the Seven Archons to receive one, and amidst nigh-disastrous outcomes in four of his five Hangout Event endings, the last one gives him a Surprisingly Happy Ending as he and the Traveler manage to get a lot of Mora.
  • Underrated and Overleveled: In-story, Bennett is such a jinx that anyone he adventures with will suffer from his infectious bad luck and range of extremely improbable disasters, to the point that many know to stay as far away from him as possible. In-game, none of that can happen to you, and his kit has such powerful, wide-reaching utility that almost any team can benefit from having him on board.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—his third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Unstoppable Fervor and True Explorer, add three levels to, respectively, his Skill and Burst.
  • Weapon Specialization
    • For his Wish artwork, Bennett wields the Harbinger of Dawn (3★); perhaps fitting his reputation for bad luck, while its Ascension substat of Critical Damage (10.2–46.9%) can serve him well, he cannot tap into its full potential, since his Burst doesn't heal enough to trigger its "Vigorous" passive, which increases its wielder's Critical Rate by 14–28% whenever their HP is at least 90%.
    • In cutscenes, Bennett wields the Traveler's Handy Sword (3★), which is relatively more appropriate for an adventurer like him, as well as helps with his survivability through its Ascension substat of Defense (6.4–29.%) and its "Journey" passive, which heals him equivalent to 1–2% of his Max HP for every Elemental Orb or Particle collected.
  • Weather Manipulation: Played for Laughs. When he declares it looks like a lovely day to go out for a walk, a giant storm proceeds to appear out of nowhere. The game will then give you the "Archaic Lord of Lightning and Blitz" achievement for "Witnessing the awesome meteorological power of Bennett's phenomenally bad luck."
  • Whole Costume Reference: His outfit is a remixed version of Himeko's Frisian Cutlass outfit.
  • Worth It:
    • At the end of one of his adventures, despite being near death and finding no actual treasure he still decided that it was all worth it because of the grand adventure he had, and it was this love of adventure that led to him gaining a Vision.
    • The elderly adventurer who adopted him braved a fiery ordeal, only to find Bennett as an abandoned baby. The adventurer was by no means disappointed, however, and gladly took Bennett in as his own.

Astral Reflection
"Fate is called as such, for it cannot be changed, nor can it be reversed. It can only but be accepted."

Rarity: 5★
Element: Hydro
Weapon: Catalyst
Constellation: Astrolabos, the Astrolabe

An astrologer who uses water divination to discern the truth. Even if she loves to develop herself even further into astrology-related stuff, Mona constantly faces a problem with money. Though the Traveler has the option to first meet her before leaving for Inazuma, she formally appears in Fontaine's Archon Quest, meeting up (again) with the Traveler and agreeing to help them confirm the accuracy of a prophecy that was foretold would doom Fontaine.

Mona specializes in hit-and-run spellcasting, in addition to a unique form of sprinting, Illusory Torrent, which drenches any foe she comes across. Her Elemental Skill, Mirror Reflection of Doom, creates a Phantom in her image that draws enemy aggression and gradually damages them before exploding, as well as allows her to move backwards in its held form. Her Elemental Burst, Stellaris Phantasm, traps enemies an Illusory Bubble that can rein in smaller enemies and, should they be attacked, inflict Omens that increase subsequent damage taken.note
  • Always Accurate Attack: Like fellow early-game Hydro spellcaster Barbara, being a catalyst user means she summons water onto enemies rather than using a projectile, and this give her incredible accuracy. As she has much better attack scaling and a kit focused on damage-dealing, this makes her very good overall and a much more credible attacker than Barbara.
  • Astrologer: Mona's specialty. This also overlaps with her profession as a seer and is symbolized by her Constellation, an instrument used since ancient times to chart the stars. Her voice line comments for the other characters mostly focus on the meanings of their constellations, where she explains how the constellations are related to the character's past or personality. She also makes stargazing a hobby.
  • Awesome McCoolname: Her surname, "Megistus," even in-universe, to the point where after Fischl's real name was revealed to be Amy, Kazuha felt a need to double-check that it really is her surname. She states that it's effectively a title that she took on after becoming her master's apprentice and that her actual surname is something else entirely.
Kazuha: "Forgive me if this comes across as rude, but... is your surname truly Megistus?"
Mona: "Hmph, you think I was bluffing? My full title is and always has been "Mona Megistus, the Astrologist.""
    Kazuha: "...my apologies."
  • Badass Adorable: Mona is an intelligent and endearingly tsundere, if comically cash-strapped, young lady who is also a very accomplished astrologist and can weaponize her hydromancy.
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Megistus" is also Greek for "greatest."
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: The Mages' Tea Party cinematic reveals that Mona borrows her "let me scry" catchphrase from her master Barbeloth.
  • Brutal Honesty: Mona always tells the truth of people's fortunes, even if it's highly unpleasant. Unsurprisingly, this earned her a bad reputation, and few people are brave enough to ask her for predictions these days.
  • Butt-Monkey: Not to the same extent as Amber or Bennett, but the game plays her Perpetual Poverty for laughs. The times she tries to act haughty, the Traveler is given the choice to reply very snarkily. Then during the "Summertime Odyssey" event, she gets hit on by a talking statue.
  • The Cassandra: The "Midsummer Island Adventure" event reveals that, early in her career, Mona struggled with people coming to her for answers when facing horrible circumstances, as her refusal to lie means that more often than not what they ''needed'' to hear is rarely what they ''wanted'' to hear. As such, most clients called her a fraud rather than face their problems head-on. Worse, she's met and advised people who have a choice in shaping their futures, but chose to tread paths that only lead to suffering despite her warnings.
  • Chekhov's Gun: In a back alley of Mondstadt, there is a door blocked by a circular magic seal. No one seems to know how to open it. Much later, once the player unlocks Mona's Story Quest, you travel with Mona from Liyue to Mondstadt, and after some shenanigans along the way she decides to stay there for a while. Her Hydro thaumaturgy allow her to remove the seal, and the magic lab inside becomes her new home.
  • Combos: Her second Constellation upgrade, Lunar Chain, gives her normal attacks a 20% chance to be automatically followed up with the starry burst of her charged attack.
  • Cursed with Awesome: She does not particularly appreciate her own Vision, considering its power irrelevant compared to the discovery of all the mysteries about the universe and often complains about how she always gets wet every time she uses it. However she still recognizes its usefulness for most of her astrological purposes as a tool.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: During the "Unreconciled Stars" event, she manages to teleport herself, the Traveler, and Fischl, in addition to Oz and Paimon, to avoid an ambush from Scaramouche with almost no prep time.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: Her Burst traps multiple enemies in a giant Illusory Bubble. When the trapped enemies take a hit, not only do they take increased damage, but are also marked with Omens, which increases the damage output of their attackers for a few seconds. Mona's first Constellation upgrade, Prophecy of Submersion, increases the damage of Electro-charged, Vaporize, and Hydro Swirl reactions done onto the marked enemy, as well as extends the duration of Freeze, by 15%note  for eight seconds, while her fourth, Prophecy of Oblivion, augments a 15% boost to the Critical Rate of attacks against them.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She plays a prominent role in the latter half of the "Unreconciled Stars" event, to the point she is the Guest-Star Party Member in the last part. Afterwards, in "Midsummer Island Adventure", she gets her dedicated island that explores her past struggles and her worldview.
  • Defeat by Modesty: She once tried to look at Venti's constellation through the scry glass, then comes a sudden gust disrobing her.
  • Developer's Foresight:
    • Depending on which Quest the player finishes first, dialogue upon meeting her in her Story Quest and the "Unreconciled Stars" event changes to reflect whether or not the Traveler has met her before.
    • It is possible to unlock her second Character Story entry before the first, as the latter requires you to have played her Story Quest first.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Her astrology correctly tells her that the successor to her master's friend will appear to them shortly. However, said successor turns out to be Klee, throwing her for a loop, who inherited not so much her mother Alice's talents in astrology as much as bomb-making, meaning she cannot compare notes to help find the Traveler's sibling.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": As seen on her "More about Mona - IV" voice line, she does not want people to call her "Meg" (a shorthand of her surname) simply because "Mona" is already sufficient for a shorter name.
  • Draw Aggro: Her Skill summons Phantoms to lure enemies away from her, which periodically damages surrounding foes before exploding after a few seconds. The ability's description says that astrologists may have dreamed of creating phantoms of themselves to ward off ill fate, but Mona is well known for making such a mockery of the practice. Mona's first-ascension passive, "Come 'n' Get Me, Hag!", allows her to automatically generate a Phantom whenever she reappears next to a group of enemies after using her unique sprint for at least two seconds, with a two-second-long duration and half the damage potency of its "normal" counterpart.
  • Elemental Personalities: Played with. Mona wields a Hydro Vision, and though she can be prone to some moody outbursts, she is quite adaptable. Her somber mood is usually in display when giving out divinations.
  • Elemental Shapeshifter: Her unique sprint and plunging attack turns her into a stream of flowing water. It also allows her to rapidly cross bodies of water at running, rather than swimming, speed.
  • Eyelid Pull Taunt: Mona's Skill generates Phantoms that take the form of a cartoony rendition of her doing this to Draw Aggro.
  • Fanservice Pack: Inverted; Mona received a more conservative costume starting v2.5 alongside Jean, Rosaria, and Amber. Mona's new short-legged leotard covered up her chest, but did turn her pantyhose into a Grade-A Zettai Ryouiki instead. Players outside the Chinese server get the option to swap between either outfit, but all cutscenes were later modified starting v2.6 to make her new outfit the default.
  • A Fool and His New Money Are Soon Parted: She got a decent windfall of 20,000 Mora after helping Mr. Zhu, proprietor of the inn she stayed in during her trip to Liyue Harbor, find his wedding ring. Unfortunately, she made the big mistake of offering to treat both the Traveler and Paimon at the costlier Wangshu Inn.
  • Fragile Speedster: Mona moves very quickly with her unique dash, and her Elemental Skill encourages hit-and-run tactics, but she is very fragile and can't take a hit.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair in high twintails, befitting her Tsundere attitude.
  • Going Native: Mona is not a native Mondstadter but is nevertheless a happily adopted citizen, and has made friends with Mondstadt-born citizens such as Fischl. In the Archon Quest of Version 4.2 "Masquerade of the Guilty", Mona reveals that she was actually born in Mondstadt. Her parents moved to Dornman Port and afterwards Mona left to travel with her master before settling in Mondstadt City.
  • Got Me Doing It: She gives off a Noblewoman's Laugh like Fischl after Paimon compliments her, showing that Fischl has rubbed off on her in some ways. Paimon then tells Mona to never do that again.
  • Growling Gut: During her Story Quest, her belly growls for food on two separate occasions — once after the Traveler defeats Slimes for her, as well as when they and Paimon take her out to eat at Wangshu Inn. Thanks to recklessly spending her money to further her career as an astrologist at the expense of her daily needs, flavor text says that embarrassing stomach rumbles are a recurring issue for her.
  • Hair Flip: At the start of her Story Quest, she flips her hair when she realizes that the Traveler is not from Teyvat.
  • Hartman Hips: She is very, uh, gifted in the lower body department, which her outfit accentuates.
  • Honor Before Reason: Due to her pride as an astrologer who cares more for mysteries and truths of life than worldly attachments, she never uses her divination for profit. In turn, she is often strapped for cash. She also refuses to see her own fate, as she fears that doing so can turn fate in on itself, which may have dangerous consequences.
  • Hot Witch: As the various fanservice tropes listed here demonstrate, she is a very attractive young woman (especially when wearing her original outfit), with her giant wizard hat giving her a classic witch look.
  • Humiliation Conga: Her Story Quest is just one long train of bad luck after another. She makes 20,000 Mora which she quickly burns after treating the Traveler and Paimon to a meal. Then upon arrival at Mondstadt to find the protégé of her teacher's rival, said protégé turns out to be Klee, who was not taught astrology with which Mona will compare knowledge. Then, while finding the box her master Barbeloth asked of her, she reads a book from Klee's bag which, she learned belatedly, was her master's journal which she was forbidden to read. Out of fear of her master, Mona stays in hiding in Mondstadt and had to rent an apartment despite being broke.
  • Interface Screw: Having Mona on the field would create a jingling ambient noise from her accessories. Unfortunately, this can interfere with the shimmering sound effect the Seelies make, which may make it harder to notice that one is nearby.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: There is a (fairly loose) concept of generations in this game-characters tend to be grouped into Cast Herds with characters that are implied to be of similar age. Bennett's friends Barbara, Fischl, and Razor are all (nebulously) younger than characters like Jean. Mona initially rubbed elbows with Albedo more than anyone else, who is old enough to be a Captain of the Knights of Favonius at the very least, and she's a working professional who lives on her own. She shares the same "Medium Female" body model as Barbara and Fischl, but so do characters like Keqing who are almost certainly young adults. This makes the friendship she developed with Fischl after the "Unreconciled Stars" event an implied example. Certainly, Mona has to take up the role of adult at times, as she did during the "Summer Fantasia" event much later.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Inverted. She accepts reality for what it is, but the people who come to her for assistance do not. She explains that due to being an astrologist, many people have come to her for help. But whenever her prognostications lean negative, they refused to believe her, and called her a fake.
  • It Was a Gift: Her Vision used to be a "teaching aid" given to her by her teacher; she treasured it well as it is the only proof of her apprenticeship. Then one day, said teaching aid somehow becomes a Vision.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is very prideful of her astrologist powers and has an inflated view of herself, acting haughty when it comes to matters related to it. Outside of that, however, the worst Mona can get is just a refusal to show weakness, and she is otherwise an approachable person and loyal friend; for example, it doesn't take her too long to defrost to the Traveler, and after some time, is perfectly willing to go along with Fischl's antics.
  • Jiggle Physics: Mona has some of the bounciest breasts in the playable roster thus far, as shown in her running and walking animations.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Her reaction to seeing Scaramouche is to turn tail and run (and take the Traveler and Fischl along in the process), noting that as a Fatui Harbinger, his power exceeds hers.
  • Lady of Black Magic: A sensually dressed young aquatic sorceress who has mastered powerful forms of astrological magic.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Played for Laughs — in Venti's voice-over, she refers to him (read: the Anemo Archon himself, just incognito) as "a bard that sits around doing nothing all day" and wonders what could be so interesting about him; once she decides to take a look, however, a powerful gust of wind threatens to disrobe her; possibly to hide his true nature, but still no less karmic for her.
(About Venti) "[...] This wind... I can't open my eyes! No, my hat! Ah! My clothes, stop! The wind's going to strip all my clothes off! Make it stop, make it stop! ...alright, alright! I'll never do this again!"
  • Leotard of Power: Her default outfit (prior to the v2.5 update) was a leotard and pantyhose.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: In the first few scenes of her Story Quest, she does little besides act haughty, boss the Traveler around, and completely do not hide her financial difficulties. That is, until a group of "merchants" try to offer her and the Traveler a cart ride to Mondstadt. She recognizes them as bandits at once and gives them a verbal beatdown, right before chasing them off empty-handed. Her being able to fight catches Paimon and the Traveler off-guard.
  • Living Lie Detector: Thanks to her talent in astrology, Mona can tell whether or not someone is lying to her. She uses this in her Story Quest when she exposes a group of bandits posing as merchants offering her and the Traveler a ride to Mondstadt. Her teacher, naturally, is also one; this is partly why she cannot go back to her after accidentally reading her journal against her explicit orders, and she will not be able to hide that.
  • The Magnificent: She's called "Mona Megistus, the Astrologist" according to one of her voicelines. "Megistus" is also derived from the Ancient Greek word for "great".
  • Making a Splash: She has control over the Hydro element. Unlike the majority of the cast, she practices Vision-less elemental magic in the form hydromancy, which allows her to use water for divination even without a Vision. As she has no interest in the combat prowess provided by her Vision, she regards her Vision as a useless but sentimental accessory from her master.
  • Male Gaze:
    • Nearly every cutscene in her Story Quest has at least one scene where her backside is front and center.
    • The "Summertime Odyssey" event we get a lingering shot of Mona's ass that actually zooms in as she walks away. This is right after the group first meets Arnold, a Living Statue infatuated with Mona, and the shot is implied to be his POV.
  • Master of Illusion: Her Vision grants her the use of Hydro magic but many of Mona's moves take the form of luminous stars and the cosmos itself.
  • Meaningful Rename: According to Mona, her master made her change her surname to "Megistus" upon becoming an apprentice as a signifier of her status. She states that if she herself ever takes on an apprentice then they'll also have to take on the name of Megistus.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Mona is the first character who has a unique sprint, where after half a second she transforms into flowing water foams until she stops, at which point she sprays water at nearby enemies and objects. This allows her to Walk on Water without having to swim, but this sprint still consumes Stamina.
  • Moment of Weakness: Because Mona usually tries to hide weakness by acting haughty, a way to put her on the spot is to point out her poverty or what she doesn't have. She's prone to making a lot of denials when someone does it.
  • Money Dumb: Played with. Mona does live a relatively stable lifestyle, as evidenced by the Summertime Odyssey event in v2.8., but she ultimately spends it all on expensive astrology equipment, hence her constant Mora problems. In her "Troubles" voice-line, Mona also mentions the things she must pay, such as her residence's rent, equipment repair bill, and renewing her journal subscriptions. Then she has this to say...
"...Ah, I'll pay off the celestial globe first, if I leave it any longer, they'll sell out and then I'll never get my hands on one..."
  • Ms. Fanservice: Mona is, alongside Lisa, one of the "fanservice girls" of the launch line-up, with her leotard-like outfit emphasizing her entire body, the upper part of which shows off her back, cleavage, and slender waist, and the lower part of which is covered solely in skintight hosery and emphasizes her Hartman Hips. She ended up as one of the characters Hoyoverse had to redesign to comply with Chinese censorship laws starting with v2.5, and though her second outfit is more modest, it's still form-fitting, still showing off her hips as well as having absolute territory. Her chest also gets a lot of emphasis in both outfits, complete with copious Jiggle Physics.
  • Ms. Exposition: She's the one formally introducing the Hexenzirkel and some of its members to the Traveller in permanent content during Act V of the Fontaine Archon Quests.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Her unique sprint lets her rocket across bodies of water and, if she has unlocked her first-ascension passive, generate Phantoms whenever she reappears next to enemies after at least a two-second-long dash. Since it is both faster and more stamina-efficient than sprinting, it also sees use for just "running" from place to place.
    • Defied when it comes to astrology. Mona explains that its principles forbid her from using it for mundane self-interest, which is part of the reason she has such a tough time making money.
    • Inverted with her Vision. Mona largely considers the thing a useless bauble because it only bolsters her martial prowess and does nothing to help her fortune-telling abilities, i.e. it doesn't have any 'mundane' use to her.
  • Mysterious Past: Little is known about Mona's origins and how she became Barbeloth's apprentice, with her Character Stories and in-game appearances focusing on her experiences as an astrologist and her current life as an expatriate of Mondstadt. This gets cleared up a little in her briefly appearance in Chapter IV Act V, where she confirms that she was born Mondstadt, though she didn't grow up in Mondstadt City.
  • Not So Above It All: While she typically presents herself as a refined young woman befitting her so-called status, she'll drop the demeanor whenever caught off guard, most commonly where Mora is involved.
    • In the "Summer Fantasia" event she challenges Fischl to a race after the latter insults her ability to swim. Instead of swimming, however, they end up running along the edge of the water. This shows that Mona is not above Fischl's childish games, as much as she insists otherwise. In addition, when the characters explore Fischl's mirage, the only other character who is as interested in the narrative as Mona is Paimon, to the point that the former throws a tantrum when the first volume of the story Fischl had written ends on a cliffhanger, though she loses some interest by the time they reach the final volume, having been more intrigued by the very nature of the Golden Apple Archipelago itself.
    • The Phantoms she generates with her Skill (as well as her unique sprint through her first-ascension passive) are cartoonish illusions which give an Eyelid Pull Taunt to distract enemies. This, along with the name of said passive, showcases a more childish side of the haughty astrologist.
  • Odd Friendship: With Fischl. After meeting in the "Unreconciled Stars" event, they've remained in contact and apparently hang out regularly. Though participating in Fischl's roleplay often makes her feel silly, she does think of her as a friend and hates seeing her in genuine pain and emotional turmoil.
  • Older Than They Look: Given she uses the "Medium Female" model, her actual age can be a bit ambiguous, though the game shows Mona is old enough to drink.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Though, as the "Summertime Odyssey" event reveals, Mona actually has an affluent lifestyle, having a well-furnished home and an entire library full of expensive and rare books and apparatuses, her tendency to splurge on said material (or at worst get scammed with overpriced or knockoff such goods), in addition to her self-imposed vow never to put money-making above telling the truth, make her constantly strapped for cash, to the point where she had to forage and eat wild mushrooms for a month just to save Mora. One of her idle animations even has her check on her purse, then sigh upon discovering she has exactly one Mora coin.
  • Prophecy Twist: Her prognostication correctly tells her to meet with the successor of her master's friend to complete her task, and even tells her when that individual is approaching. Unfortunately for her, it did not tell her what part of said friend's legacy the successor had inherited, so fate throws her for a loop when not by a fellow astrologist, but Klee, greets her.
  • Reed Richards Is Useless: Mona is a highly-gifted seer and could have used her abilities to make money, but she refuses on the grounds that astrology is a higher calling that should not be used for mundane purposes, hence constantly leaving her broke. During the "Summertime Odyssey" event she revealed that too often what she sees is not what her benefactor wants, but she refuses to lie, so making money off of her astrology would not be particularly simple.
  • Resource Reimbursement: Her utility passive, Principium of Astrology, gives her a 25% chance to refund materials while crafting Weapon Ascension materials.
  • Seers:
    • Mona conducts precise astrological readings using water, and she can discern truth from lies, predict, or look at the fate or future of someone. The first time she meets the Traveler, she name-drops vital details like their otherworldly status, their search for their sibling, and the Unknown God. While she admits to having trouble with the Traveler's specifics since they are from another world, the fact that she knows those details at all without the Traveler telling her themselves is enough to convince them to hear her out.
    • She uses her abilities during the "Unreconciled Stars" event, both to find when and where meteorite impacts occur and to discover the true origins of the event.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Though it's covered by her cape, Mona's leotard leaves her back exposed.
  • Shameful Strip: In her "About Venti" voiceline, Mona attempts to do a reading on him to figure out what's so special about him. She's immediately attacked by a localized tornado that starts stripping off her clothes until she promises to never do it again.
  • Situational Damage Attack: Mona's sixth Constellation upgrade, Rhetoric of Calamitas, boosts the damage of her first charged attack within eight seconds after sprinting, at a rate of 60% per second of her sprint (to a maximum of 180%, equivalent to at least three seconds).
  • Skilled, but Naive: In a way. Her Character Stories say that she has learned the "laws that governed the existence of all things" during her time with Barbeloth, but after setting out, she started to doubt the things she learned, as she found out that good things and deeds can come from "bad people." After that, she felt that she had her feet on solid ground, and that what she had researched was full of holes.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: She is a gifted astrologist, but even then, she has a very inflated view of herself.
    • She introduces herself as Mona Megistus, meaning "The Great Astrologist Mona," and seems to expect preferential treatment from everyone she meets due to her fame (though nobody seems to have heard of her). Most tellingly, she considers herself and the Traveler to be equals in status, despite having nothing in her resumé remotely on the same level as saving Mondstadt from Stormterror or beating a Fatui Harbinger. The events of her Story Quest knock her down a couple of pegs.
    • This gets inverted after that Quest, as one of her character stories set after her move to Mondstadt explains how Mona got a job writing an astrology column on The Steambird. The column became popular enough to keep being published despite it covering advanced subjects, and Mona's name rose in popularity along with it. Far away in Sumeru, Layla has even heard of Mona and has nothing but praise for her, explaining that she has become well-known and respected by her fellow Rtawahist scholars.
  • Squishy Wizard: Mona can dish some insane damage with her Burst, and has good damage output with her magical attacks, but she is very fragile.
  • Stealth Pun: Mona's skillset is the Hydro version of Lisa's, and naturally the two have remarkably high synergy, so it is not hard to see what their names form when put together.
  • The Stoic: Invoked when giving out predictions. Mona relays the true outcome of her readings even if it is hard to accept; the game says that she lacks human emotions whenever this happens.
  • Stripperiffic: Her original outfit's top is a leotard that emphasizes her breasts, back and narrow waist, while the lower part is a pair of tights that emphasize her wide hips and legs. It's telling that she was among the characters redesigned with Chinese censorship laws in mind, and hers was the most drastic change by far, as if to hammer in how immodest her original design was.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: Both her original and alternate outfit prominently feature numerous star symbols, as befitting her profession as an astrologist.
  • Tragic Dream: Mona's wish is for a perfect sky where the stars never lose their way—in other words, for everyone to be happy. She is well aware that this is impossible, so when she uncovers an Awful Truth through her divination she doesn't try and fight it.
  • Tsundere: A downplayed Harsh example on both types (Harsh and Sweet), as shown in her Story Quest and Serenitea Pot dialogue. Mona is really prideful, refuses to show weakness, and tries to hide her poverty by acting haughty. However, she's still a good person at heart, and has much less trouble at showing kindness than say, Diona.
    • Mona initially spends the early acts of the "Summertime Odyssey" event grumbling about how silly she feels participating in Fischl's roleplay, but when the girl's mood falters at the end of the second act she tries to cheer her up, and is visibly concerned when Fischl heads off on her own before the third act.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her almond-shaped, sea-green eyes represent her prideful personality, and they fit with her being a passionate astrologist.
  • The Unchosen One: Like Ningguang, Mona's Vision was not directly granted to her by Celestia but was a masterless Vision guarded for reasons unknown by Barbeloth before she gave it to Mona, hoping she would awaken it again and use it to expand her astrological studies.
  • Unexplained Accent: She has a transatlantic affect in the English dub where everyone else sans Xinyan has more neutral-sounding American accents. It emphasizes her erudite haughtiness but does not reflect her origins as a native of Mondstadt.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Restless Revolution and Mockery of Fortuna, add three levels to, respectively, her Burst and Skill.
  • Utility Party Member: Her enhanced sprint allows you to Walk on Water on sprint speed, rather than swimming.
  • Vapor Wear: In both of her outfits, the side slit in her leotard under her arms show it's impossible for her to be wearing a bra.
  • Water Is Womanly: A sensual, erudite mage and Hydro Vision holder in a Form-Fitting Wardrobe who uses hydromancy for her astrology.
  • Weapon Specialization: For her 2022 birthday artwork, Mona is depicted wielding the Skyward Atlas (5★), which augments her Hydro damage-dealing potency through its Ascension substat of Attack (7.2–33.1%) and its "Wandering Clouds" passive, which increases its wielder's Elemental Damage Bonus by 12–24%, in addition to a 50% chance to conjure clouds that attack nearby opponents for fifteen seconds, triggered at least every half-minute and whose damage potency is equivalent to 160–320% of its wielder's Attack stat.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Perks: She only views her Vision as little more than a convenient tool for her divining, as she values the "truth" beyond the stars more than any sort of power, even those given by the gods. She does, at least, value it for being (used to be) a gift from her old teacher.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In Chapter IV Act V, Mona travels to Fontaine because of The Prophecy but dips out early on before the plan to put Furina on trial is put into motion and is never seen again even after expressing a wish to help with the situation. She is likely fine given that she isn't Fontainian.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: At the end of her Story Quest, Mona is unable to return to her master because she inadvertently read the latter's diary against her orders.

Windborne Bard
"Freedom, if demanded of you by an Archon, is really no freedom at all."

Rarity: 5★
Element: Anemo
Weapon: Bow
Constellation: Carmen Dei, the Divine Song

A mysterious bard who sings songs and poems of old and new tales. The Traveler first meets him soothing the dragon Stormterror, and later while trying to pacify the dragon's rage discovers that he is Barbatos, the Anemo Archon and patron god of Mondstadt, who has come to save his old friend. The two become close allies from thereon.

Venti resonates with the winds to cast himself and his foes afloat. His Elemental Skill, Skyward Domain, summons a Wind Domain, an upcurrent that can lift foes in midair, with its held form able to create a larger Domain that can allows allies to fly up and slow down his foes' descent. His Elemental Burst, Wind's Grand Ode, fires an Anemo-enchanted arrow that creates a vortex that sucks in any enemy within range as well as changes to Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro depending on which one it comes into contact with first.note

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Venti is fond of these when describing people and things; like calling the Pyro Archon a "wayward, warmongering wretch", the Geo Archon a "brutish, blundering buffoon", and cheese a "smelly, sticky, slimy" mess.
  • The Alcoholic: He is very fond of both beer and vintage wine. During Jean's Story Quest, he gets very drunk on beer, and in his character profile he reveals a wish to steal Diluc's wine stores.
  • Androcles' Lion: Considering Venti's profession as a bard, the backstories and lore of certain items hint that he is the "friend" who woke up Dvalin from a deep slumber using the sound of his lyre. It was also thanks to the ballads that the people of Mondstadt now remember Dvalin and his deeds after having forgotten about him for centuries. In addition, Venti and Dvalin once fought together to save Mondstadt from Durin.
  • Badass Adorable: Venti is the Anemo Archon who is also a playful Pretty Boy.
  • Become a Real Boy: His Story Quest goes deep into his backstory, revealing that he was once a wind spirit who befriended a young bard who sang of freedom and his desire to overthrow Decarabian's tyranny, through whom he developed his own personality and love of freedom; when the bard died during the uprising, the wind spirit that would become Barbatos assumed his physical form in his honor.
  • Becoming the Mask: Downplayed, in that it's obvious that he prefers his human identity as "Venti" to his true identity as Barbatos. He can be wise at times, but it is not a persona he likes to keep for long.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He is an alcoholic Loser Deity who gets no respect, which makes it easy to brush off his actions on the surface level. However, with close observation over time it becomes increasingly clear that he is habouring numerous secrets, and can be subtly devious when necessary:
    • As a wind spirit, he is a part of the Thousand Winds of Time Istaroth and has shown some control over time himself, such as when he summoned the voices of Rosaria's, Diluc's, Kaeya's and Razor's parents during v3.1's Weinlesefest to stir their memories of them. His "Hello" voice line has him greeting the Traveler like an old friend while the Traveler themselves don't remember ever having met him, and claims to know every song past, present and future.
    • The Hexenzirkel once wanted to challenge him, but he managed to befriend them and now not only guards their secret tea party island, but houses the apprentices of three of the witches as well as Khaenri'ah's last hope on his land.
    • The Gnostic Chorus cutscene that plays for the Battle Pass is narrated by Venti, who tells the story of a princess that was led astray in her quest for a pearl, and the prince who took her place. Then he speaks to an unidentified "you", which could be the Traveler, telling them that it is now their "journey, of (their) tale to be told". Though the significance of that cutscene has yet to be elaborated upon, the tale of the Gnostic Chorus eerily parallels the Traveler's lost twin becoming the Prince(ss) of the Abyss Order, especially if the Abyss Twin is Lumine.
    • In v2.8's Summertime Odyssey, before the Traveler can bring up the subject, he sings about the Golden Apple Archipelago to Kazuha and Xinyan, inspiring them to visit. After Kazuha gets sleepy drunk due to mistaking Venti's fruity cocktails as fruit juice, Venti immediately gets to business and invites the Traveler to go to the second floor of the tavern to discuss the upcoming trip, as if he had purposefully made sure they wouldn’t be overheard by someone with senses as sensitive as Kazuha's. Afterwards when the Traveler and Paimon raise their concerns about someone (later implied to be the Dendro Archon) hijacking the Dodocommunication device, he simply points out that her actions are benign and gently discourages them from making enemies with what is clearly a powerful entity.
    • Venti's Magic Music is more than just uplifting tunes; it's heavily implied that he uses his highly embellished ballads to chronicle and hide valuable information that he might be prone to forget due to Irminsul meddling, just like Nahida is able to do so by use of allegorical stories.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the webcomic, he suddenly appeared in the gladiator arena to share his wind powers to Vennessa, allowing her defeat Ursa the Drake.
  • Blow You Away:
    • He's the Anemo Archon for a reason. Venti was born a wind spirit, and following Decarabian's defeat, he used his powers to take the form of a bard he befriended. As Barbatos, his powers were strong enough to reshape the terrain and throw mountaintops far into the ocean, and it's implied they allowed him to heal Xiao.
    • For a more straightfroward example of his powers, his Skill creates an upcurrent that keeps his enemies (as well as himself in its charged form) afloat. With his first-ascension passive, Embrace of Winds, said upcurrent increases in duration to twenty seconds and allows the party can propel themselves for gliding.
  • Braids of Action: He wears two braids at the side of his head. They glow bright green when he uses his Elemental Burst.
  • Brought Down to Badass: He has his Gnosis stolen by Signora at the end of the Mondstadt Archon Quest. This does not stop him from being highly competent in battle, and even without his Gnosis he can still perform some of his godly duties, as seen in his Story Quest where he lays the spirit of the original Stanley to rest.
  • Cassandra Truth: In the second act of the Mondstadt Archon Quest, Venti openly tells Sister Gotelinde that he is Barbatos in order to access the Holy Lyre der Himmel. The nun does not believe Venti's words, thinking he is just a bard.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: When Signora captures him he never drops his amused and affable demeanor, insulting her several times through rhyme even after she takes the Anemo Gnosis.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: In the manga, when Vennessa asks him about Celestia, Venti is clearly unhappy and uncomfortable before quickly changing the subject to leaving the prison before talking about Celestia.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • In his Story Quest, Venti sympathizes with "Stanley"/Hans on account of both of them having taken on the identity of their deceased friends.
    • While there is some ambiguity as to how much influence Archons have over the kinds of people who receive Visions of their element, several Anemo Vision holders, much like Venti himself, have lost loved ones in the past (i.e., as of v4.1, Xiao's comrades-in-arms, Kazuha's mentor and friend, Heizou's childhood friend, Faruzan's peers, teachers, and mother, and the Wanderer/Scaramouche's friends from Tatarasuna).
  • Corralling Vacuum: His Burst creates a vortex which continuously pulls in small- to medium-sized enemies for its duration, simultaneously dealing gradual Anemo damage and leaving them helplessly flailing about in the air, with a ability to change elements to either Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro depending on which one it absorbs first.
  • Covert Pervert: Implied. He's generally quite nice, if overly laid back and playful, but if his apparent response to Mona trying to look at his Constellation being to try and blow her clothes off is anything to go by...
  • Create Your Own Villain: Throughout his life, his hands-off approach has led to tragedy that could have been prevented had he been around to intervene:
    • Because of his lack of presence, the Lawrence Clan began imposing an iron-fisted rule, tearing down his statue, turning the Ludi Harpastum into a corrupted version of itself to be enjoyed only be the aristocracy, and even having a slave caste made to fight in blood sports.
    • During the Cataclysm, he failed to appear until after much damage had already been done to Mondstadt, including the death of Rostam, causing his lover Rosalyne-Kruzchka Rohefalter to fall into despair and become the Crimson Witch of Flames, and later La Signora.
  • Cutscene Incompetence: At the end of the Mondstadt Archon Quest, the Traveler and Venti are ambushed by La Signora and her Fatui agents right outside the Favonius Cathedral. Even though they can go toe-to-toe with hordes of enemies during gameplay, it takes just two Fatui to restrain the Traveler and make them helpless to do anything other than watch as La Signora beats Venti down. He also does not get to attack Signora when he had the chance.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: His second and sixth Constellation upgrades, Breeze of Reminiscence and Storm of Defiance, respectively reduce his enemies' Anemo Resistance by 12% and 20% when hit with his Skill and Burst, with an additional penalty to Physical Resistance for the former. Furthermore, the former adds an extra 12% reduction for enemies swept aloft, and the latter a 20% penalty to resistance against the other element absorbed by the vortex.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He does not like cheese or anything sticky. Justified by his profession; as a musician, his instruments will be significantly ruined if he gets his fingers dirty, and the uncomfortable sensation would make playing difficult.
  • Don't Fear the Reaper: In addition to being the God of Wind and Freedom, he also fulfills the role of ferryman for the souls of his followers, carrying their spirits away on the breeze so they can rest in peace. His Story Quest shows he uses a gentle hand, and his understanding of "Stanley"/Hans' taking the identity of his friend and his intervention helps Hans finally overcome his guilt and grieving, with Venti even letting him see the real Stanley again before he moves on from the world.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: In one of his voice lines, he empathizes with Zhongli's depowering and offers to bring him a bottle of vintage wine to share.
  • Due to the Dead: His current form is based on the likeness of a young bard he befriended thousands of years ago, which he partly adopts in his honor after he died during their rebellion against Decarabian. It's a brilliant move on his part: not only Venti gets to remember his friend every time he looks in a mirror, but the bard's face is immortalised and associated with their patron archon by Mondstadt's every citizen, as seen by the massive statue at the centre of their main city.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: As of v4.4, among the current playable Archons, Venti is the only one who has yet to receive a second Story Quest (which typically introduces a Trounce Domain boss) a few patches after his debut.
  • Elemental Personalities: The Anemo Archon is an approachable, carefree, coordial, talkative, and most importantly, free-spirited individual.
  • Expy: He is a Gender Inverted Wendy from Honkai Impact 3rd and its predecessor Guns GirlZ, having similar appearancesnote , names and titles that allude to their wind powers and godly status (Anemo Archon and Herrscher of Wind, respectively).
  • Feather Motif: Venti is fond of light and breezy stuff, which causes his Anemo powers to manifest as feathers. He also carries some feathers near his belt, and his backstory mentions that he would've wanted to give an eagle feather to his deceased friend.
  • Fluorescent Footprints: Midway through the Mondstadt Archon Quest, the Traveler and Paimon catch Venti running in front of the Grand Goth Hotel but lose him in a corner. Using Elemental Sight then comes in handy by revealing his footprints on the ground.
  • Foil:
    • To Zhongli, the other surviving member of the original Archons. He takes on the form of a young boy, where the latter adopts that of an adult man. He is usually hands-off in his approach to his subjects, while the latter directly ruled Liyue for thousands of years. He is mostly able to fit in as a mortal, while the latter struggles to adapt to working without his infinite wealth. He eventually lost his Gnosis as a result of neglecting his duties for too long, while the latter willingly gave up his after having grown weary of his millennia-long tenure and upon being satisfied that the Qixing and the Adepti are able to save Liyue from Osial's rampage without needing him anymore. Despite his loss of authority, he continues to watch over his people, while the latter contented himself into retirement.
    • To Hu Tao, fellow renowned twin-tailed, youthful, cheery and playful poetry lover involved with sending the deceased off who wears short shorts and a flower-adorned hat that is closely associated with Zhongli. Venti is a god that only resembles a youth with his Medium Male model, while Hu Tao is an ordinary mortal girl that uses the Medium Female model. Venti's white and green clothes also contrasts with Hu Tao's red and black outfit.
  • Foreshadowing: There are hints of him actually being the avatar of the Anemo Archon, Barbatos.
    • The first scene of him in the comic shows him appearing from an Anemo sigil on the ground in the outskirts of the Whispering Woods, and then he wonders how long he has been sleeping.
    • One of the first things Venti did upon arriving in Mondstadt is to check on the statue of Barbatos in front of the Favonius Cathedral. It turns out that he has a form that resembles how the Archon is depicted in the statue, complete with a hoodie and a pair of angelic wings.
    • When Venti tells a story about Murata in the webcomic's prologue, Vennessa notices how he speaks as if he's from the distant past. This is a hint that Venti is far older than he looks. During the gladiator match the next day, Vennessa learned that Venti is the Anemo Archon.
    • During the second act of the Mondstadt Archon Quest, while trying to gain access to the Holy Lyre der Himmel, a relic said to have belonged to the Anemo Archon, Venti proclaims to the first nun he runs into inside the Favonius Cathedral that he is Barbatos. Of course, she does not believe him. The Traveler and Paimon, however, suspect he may be telling the truth. This is later confirmed when he confronts Dvalin/Stormterror atop Starsnatch Cliff; Dvalin himself refers to him as Barbatos. Jean appeared to have realized this, almost calling him Barbatos before correcting herself. He thanks her for continuing to use his mortal name despite knowing the truth.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Barbatos's current form as Venti is human-like, similarly to the young bard he befriended thousands of years ago.
  • Friendly Sniper: He's friendly and playful, and uses bows in combat.
  • The Gadfly: He likes to tease the other party members and when Signora captures him, his reaction is to repeatedly insult her through rhyme.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • While Barbara notes that her healing powers don't really work on Venti after he's ambushed by the Fatui at the end of the Mondstadt Archon Quest, in normal combat her healing works fine on him. Though the wounds aren't normal and come from his Gnosis being forcefully taken from him.
    • Jean's Story Quest reveals that Venti is allergic to cats. However, a playable Venti can interact with any cat on the vicinity fine.
  • The Gods Must Be Lazy: As God of Freedom, Venti built Mondstadt without a strong centralized government; he knew of the irony of "the god of freedom demanding his people to be free," so he chose to leave the people to their own devices and just be a free, wandering bard. Paimon, naturally, calls him out for being irresponsible.
  • The Heretic: Downplayed and subverted, but he is known to spread subversive, fun stories about Barbatos as himself in his mortal guise. The Church doesn't take this well, but he points out that the Church doesn't know if these stories didn't happen.
  • I Let You Win: An alternative interpretation of the Cutscene Incompetence scene listed above. Despite self-proclaiming himself the "weakest of the archons", Venti is still very much one of the Seven, and a +2000 years old war veteran; he still had the power capable of cleaving mountains clean with Razor Wind, but the most he did was protecting the Traveler from La Signora's ice blast, slowly break the ice encasing his legs, taunt to her face, and not give any more resistance against her. Also, it's obvious he wasn't using his full power thanks to his braids not glowing. Furthermore, Kusanali also states that only the top 3 Harbingers are comparable to the Archons in power, which means that as the relatively low-ranked 8th, La Signora succeeding in trapping Venti should not even have happened. As to why would Venti let his Gnosis be taken, there's multiple reasons: a way to get rid of his last tether to Celestia without suspicion, a silent support of the Tsaritsa's plan, a way to give Rosalyn closure for his late arrival during the Cataclysm resulting in the death of her lover; the truth only Venti would know.
  • In-Series Nickname: Paimon names Venti "Tone-Deaf Bard" midway through the Mondstadt Archon Quest.
  • Imaginary Friend: Venti's Story Quest deals with this topic. With a special monocle borrowed from Lisa that allows wearers to discover invisible beings, he, the Traveler, and Paimon find out that children are more likely to have them, while adults tend to stop having such innocent imaginations once they grow up.
  • Internal Homage: Like many of the other Mondstadt characters, his unique Party Setup pose is a reference to his portrait, although inverted.
  • Irony: Mondstadt ought to be a paradise for the alcohol-loving Barbatos with its wines and ciders were it not for his youthful form. It is not much of an issue by the time the Traveler arrives, but his profile reveals that shortly after his arrival, the taverns refused to sell him alcohol, forcing him to get a bit creative and encourage his audience to buy him alcohol in his stead.
  • Jerkass to One: Inverted. He is on the receiving end from Zhongli, from all people. As both are the characters who know each other the longest and are the only surviving Archons from the very first roster, Zhongli has known him enough time for Venti to press all his buttons. Zhongli often refers to Barbatos as "that drunkard."
  • Loser Deity:
    • Downplayed, but he is given very little respect by most of the cast despite them all very quickly learning his identity. Paimon constantly belittles and mocks him, and voice lines for two other Archons, Morax/Zhongli and Beelzebul/Ei, show that they don't have much respect for himnote . When he tried revealing himself as Barbatos inside Mondstadt's church, the nun doesn't believe him and gets kicked out of his own church. And he also gets his Gnosis taken by Signora of the Fatui Harbingers without significant effort, and even before that Venti admits being the weakest of the Seven due to his lack of interest in ruling over his domain. He lampshades this, lamenting that the Traveler has only met him at a time when he is constantly running into misfortune.
    • To showcase that he is the weakest of the Seven, the Traveler tries to convince Neuvillette that he is a "harmless drunkard", in the hopes that the Anemo Archon can (at least) be spared from being sentenced, only for the Iudex to reply that he'll still carry out his original objective of carrying out a verdict towards him and the rest of the remaining Archons.
  • Magic Feather: His Vision is but an ordinary glass sphere used to avoid suspicion. His base powers come from being an Anemo spirit, while his more powerful abilities come from the Gnosis located in his body.
  • Magic Music:
    • His music is particularly powerful and charming, leading people who hear his songs to instantly believe in Barbatos. In the latter third of the Mondstadt Archon Quest, he uses his music and the Holy Lyre der Himmel to dispel the storm barrier covering Stormterror's Lair.
    • He's also implied to be the one helping Xiao soothe his pain from karmic debts with music. Xiao's story entry mentions that after collapsing following a day-long battle, the winds brought the sound of a distant flute, "massaging his wild senses, and giving him a moment's peace." Said text does not mention who played the flute, but in Xiao's promotional video, Venti appears at the end playing the flute in the distance.
  • The Magnificent: He's also called "Venti the Bard."
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from the Latin word for "wind" note . Fittingly, his element is Anemo.
  • Mr. Exposition: Towards the end of the Mondstadt Archon Quest, he gives off information about the world, Mondstadt, and the Archons. It helps that he is one of the Archons himself.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Venti might be irresponsible towards his duties as an Archon (sloth), unabashedly mischievous if he sees it fit and he is The Alcoholic (gluttonynote ), but anyone who meets him will see that he can be quite friendly and approachable. He seemingly sets the trend started among every Archon being, in one way or another, nice guys.
  • Multishot: His first Constellation upgrade, Splitting Gales, allows him to fire two extra arrows with his charged shots, each having a third of the potency of the main shot.
  • Never Gets Drunk: He does, but it takes much more for Venti to get drunk than a normal person would. During the surprise party for Jean, Venti drinks thirty-seven mugs of alcohol. Normally, he would not be able to pay for one, but because the drinks are free for the party's attendees, he takes the opportunity and drinks as much as he likes. He does not realize that the drinks are only free for the Knights of Favonius, but Diluc knows that Venti could not carry that much around him and would be unable to pay for the drinks anyways, and he comments about how Venti is not a normal person, being one of the few people who knew he is Barbatos.
  • The Nicknamer: In the webcomic, Venti calls Barca Lawrence, then-tyrant of Mondstadt, as a "Thick Fat Sausage Stuffing," and gives Vennessa the title "Flame-Haired" in his ballads.
  • Not Quite Flight: The held form of his Skill causes him to fly upwards with his wind powers and float in midair, seemingly as though he achieved natural flight, but will drop down after a short while.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Venti looks like an irresponsible, lazy, harmless drunkard at face value, but closer inspection of the lore reveals that Venti is hiding many secrets, and his lackadaisical attitude is a way to pass under the radar and not draw any suspicion upon himself for reasons only he knows. It goes to the point that the game itself barely focuses on his role as Barbatos anymore.
  • Odd Friendship: It's more of an alliance but he forms one in Alchemical Ascension with Diona of all people, in spite of his cat allergy and her hatred towards drunkards, to help her get more ingredients.
  • Oh, My Gods!: One of his lines when he opens a treasure chest is him thanking Barbatos, only for him to realize that he just thanked himself.
    "Thank Barbatos! Wait a minute..."
  • Olympus Mons: Venti is a 5★ character, and is the god Barbatos in human form.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Of the current playable Archons, Buer is the only one to get along with him, if his voice-over about her is to go by.
(About Buer) "The first thing you think of when you hear 'Dendro Archon' is her power over dreams. Her dreams are akin to my ballads — full of emotion and imagination. Hehe, it goes without saying that we get along really well!"
  • Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous: Played with in an amusing way. Venti identifies as male, but as Barbatos, he is seen as this by the people of Mondstadt, likely because no one has seen or spoken to him in 500 years and the only thing they have to go on are his androgynous statues and some fairy tales.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to the other Archons, absolutely. Venti is the only one to not get a second Story Quest, and many of the events he appears in ignore his status as the Anemo Archon entirely and instead focus on his bard career. Because of both of these factors, his history isn't explored as deeply as the other Archons, despite him and Zhongli being the eldest among them.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: In the epilogue to the 2023 Lantern Rite event, Venti and Zhongli keep throwing exaggerated compliments to each other, while also throwing embarrassing anecdotes about the other.
  • Pet the Dog: Tries anyway. At the sight of Barbara being distressed over the destruction of the Holy Lyre der Himmel, with her accidentally rubbing salt in the wound by begging Barbatos for forgiveness, he uses magic on the Lyre, seemingly fixing it. Unfortunately, she takes it from him to return to its place, meaning he can't hide the fact that his magic is but a illusion.
  • Plot Allergy: Venti is very allergic to cats.
    • During Jean's story quest, Venti needs the Traveler's help to recover his lyre strings from a cat.
    • In "Summertime Odyssey", Venti doesn't tag along with the Traveler because he has been offered a lot of drinks at Cat's Tail for a performance. He spends the entire quest on the rooftop because he can't stop sneezing during his gig.
    • Weirdly, he is fine around Diona in the 4.5 Alchemical Ascension event.
  • Power Floats: As expected from the Anemo Archon himself. Besides being able to generate wind currents to glide high into the air, one of his idle animations has him casually float off the ground for seconds, notably without even using a glider.
  • Pretty Boy: Yes. His appearance is quite androgynous, with his braids, somewhat short stature, and his bard outfit being able to give the impression he looks like a woman.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Seeing as he is a god and hasn't even been seen for 500 years prior to the story. He looks youthful, though his purchase of beer does not raise any eyebrows, at least by the time the Traveler arrives. In the comic, years after he helped Vennessa overthrow the Lawrence Clan's tyranny, he still appears the same as he tells the Traveler about Vennessa's legend. His Story Quest puts his age at around 2,600 years old, and the Liyue Archon Quest reveals that out of the original Archons, he's the only other member remaining besides Rex Lapis.
  • Reduced Mana Cost: A variant—his utility passive, Windrider, shaves 20% off of Stamina consumption while gliding.
  • Regenerating Mana: His fourth-ascension passive, Stormeye, restores 15 Energy to Venti once the vortex generated by his Burst ends, as well as to any ally whose Vision element matches that absorbed by the vortex.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: As a traveling bard, he loves to speak in rhymes. In the comic, his penchant for rhymes even gets to annoy Vennessa, but she comes to enjoy it in the end. When the situation's serious, however, he can speak normally. In the game, he usually speaks normally, but will occasionally rhyme, especially when he intends to tease.
  • Sad Clown: He may have a carefree façade, but under the surface, Venti admits to the Traveler to having his fair share of sadness and regrets. He gets especially upset when recounting the deaths of friends that he lost to either battle or old age due to his very long lifespan.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: The lines Venti comes up with for a hymn Kaeya had him help write for the Church of Favonius's amateur choir make it clear that Venti knows Kaeya's Dark Secret. The theme for the hymn was "things we appreciate about Mondstadt", and Kaeya's verse is about a moored ship finding its way somewhere it calls home. This alludes to Kaeya's identity as a Deep Cover Agent of Khaenri'ah Becoming the Mask, although in an optimistic way. Kaeya doesn't seem to mind, but given that Kaeya had also made it clear at this point that he knows Venti's Secret Identity, if he did he would be a hypocrite.
  • Self-Deprecating Humor: Venti himself often tells cheeky, irreverent stories about himself as Barbatos to his own people, such as times he allegedly played pranks on his fellow Archons.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: With Paimon. Venti's demeanor annoys her to the point she calls him "Tone-Deaf Bard" and usually belittles him. In response, Venti often imitates her for laughs, and his playable voice-lines have him refer to her as a "pesky little pixie thing" and a minor inconvenience.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • Venti is the oldest and most experienced of all the archer-type characters and a god on top of that. Despite doing some flourishes in his standard attack string, he manages to let loose four extra arrows compared to everyone else, and he charges up his arrows faster.
    • During the "Unreconciled Stars" event, the playable characters' Visions glow and produce a noise when they are near a meteorite shard... except for Venti's, because his Vision is fake.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: In the 2023 Lantern Rite event epilogue, he gets into one with Zhongli. The two of them are doing everything in their power to keep their identities hidden from everyone present while trading barbs with one another at the same time.
  • Starving Artist: Played for Laughs. Venti suffers from Perpetual Poverty, though unlike Zhongli, a fellow disguised Archon who suffers from similar problems, he rarely seems to mind. It does, however, prevent him from feeding his alcohol habit, leading to such antics as crashing Jean's surprise party despite not having contributed to it, and trying to raid the open bar despite not being one of the people invited (the bartender humors him to see Venti's alcohol tolerance anyway).
  • Status Buff: His fourth Constellation upgrade, Hurricane of Freedom, raises his Anemo Damage Bonus by 25% for ten seconds whenever he picks up Elemental Particles or Orbs.
  • Stolen Good, Returned Better: Zigzagged and ultimately subverted. After recovering the Holy Lyre der Himmel from the Fatui, the Traveler learns from Venti that it has long since lost all its power. Using Dvalin’s purified tears, they can restore its power... only for Dvalin to destroy it beyond repair when Venti confronts him. After solving the Stormterror crisis, Venti sheepishly returns the mangled Holy Lyre to Barbara, who freaks out and begs the Anemo Archon to forgive her. Then Venti restores the lyre to pristine condition with magic, to Barbara’s immense relief, only to urge the Traveler to run before she gets back because the illusion won't hold for long.
  • The Storyteller: Part of him being a bard is telling stories of legends. In the comic, he tells the Traveler about the story of Vennessa, the woman who led a rebellion against the tyrannical Lawrence Clan a millennium ago and founded the Knights of Favonius.
  • Support Party Member: What Venti lacks in raw damage output, he makes up for with incredible crowd control, debuff (through Anemo artifacts), and exploration skills.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: Venti not only took the Nameless Bard's face, but also his profession and philosophy of seeking and living by freedom to heart. After all, it was the Bard's Last Request.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: He tries to make Barbara feel better about the destroyed Holy Lyre der Himmel by apparently fixing it with magic. When she takes it from him to return to its place, he reveals after she has gone that it was a temporary fix, and suggests he and the Traveler take their leave.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Apples. His favorite drink is also apple cider.
"Here, have an apple. I just picked it. Look how ripe and juicy it is... *(munching)* Truly the fruit of the gods!"
  • Tragic Keepsake: His current appearance has been made in the image of a bard he befriended back when he was a mere wind spirit. In addition, his eagle feathers were meant to be a gift for his human friend, who unfortunately died while leading the revolt against Decarabian before he could see his dream of seeing birds in flight come true. In his memory, the spirit that became Barbatos/Venti took on the bard's form and wore the eagle feathers on him.
  • Trickster God: His character profile past Friendship Level 4 recounts tales of him pranking the other Archons, including the Tsaritsa and Morax. However, the text then reveals that they are merely fabricated stories, and Venti asked the people how could they tell so to mess with them; the text implies that he was drunk when he told those stories.
  • Trickster Mentor: While he doesn't rule over Mondstadt properly, Venti still takes the time and effort to look after his citizens by offering advice whenever they need it by use of his bard career. On the Windblume festival he's at the plaza offering love advice by proxy of the Traveller, and on the Alchemical Ascension event he helps Diona see the real roots of her hate for alcohol, and even offers her a solution that would allow people to indulge without the negative side effects; a solution that, with Diona's gift, it's far more achievable for her.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—his third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Ode to Thousand Winds and Concerto dal Cielo, add three levels to, respectively, his Burst and Skill.
  • Utility Weapon: The charged form of his Skill gives a free airlift, allowing players to reach tall places quicker or glide to a distance more easily.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Venti has lived around Zhongli for so long, he knows how to press his buttons to exasperate him; the bard is even the only one capable of breaking his perpetually calm veneer. However, Zhongli's character story makes clear that he missed Venti after he went to sleep after the cataclysm, and he appreciates that he's still around to "share the memories". For his part, Venti is willing to go visit the Geo Archon after finding out he retired, but funnily enough he only did so when they're both surrounded by mortals who don't know who they really are, just so Zhongli wouldn't blow him away at sight; all and all, despite the awkwardness and embellished barbs, it's clear that those two are happy to see each other again after so long.
  • Wandering Minstrel: He loves to wander around, recite poems, speak in rhymes, and play music with his little harp.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: He's intensely allergic to cats, so if one steals something from him, he needs to ask someone else to retrieve it for him. Even holding something a cat touched is enough to set off a sneezing fit.
  • Weapon Specialization: Venti's Wish banner runs concurrent with that for the Elegy for the End (5★), whose Ascension substat is Energy Recharge (12–55.1%), and whose "The Parting Refrain" passive increases its wielder's Elemental Mastery by 60–120 points, as well as allows them to gather stacks of Sigil of Remembrance at least every 0.2 second whenever their Elemental Talents hits opponents, which are then consumed once four are gathered to trigger the "Millennial Movement: Farewell Song" effect for twelve seconds, which increases the party's Elemental Mastery by 100–200 points and Attack stat by 20–40% in exchange for being unable to gather the stacks for twenty seconds. This helps accelerate his Burst charging, and given that it (as well as his Skill) lingers on even after Venti has been switched out, it allows him to bless the party with offensive support.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He mentions that he and Tsaritsa, the Cryo Archon, used to be close allies long ago, but nowadays things are not the same anymore (to the point of one of her Fatui agents agents beats him up, or at least specifically Signora/Rozalyne, who blames his tardiness during the Cataclysm for the tragedy that drove her the way she is today).
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Since Venti occasionally sneezes whenever a cat approaches him, he makes it a rule that no cats must be in the vicinity when he is choosing where to perform. He also sneezes near a cat during a sub-quest of Jean's Story Quest. His cat allergy is reactive enough that during the "Summertime Odyssey" event, he can actually be seen perching on the roof of Cat's Tail when he's tasked to perform there because his allergy won't allow him to perform inside the tavern.
  • Wind Is Green: His color scheme is primarily green, and he wields Anemo.
  • Winged Humanoid: As Barbatos he was big, feathery wings, as seen in his statues and the legends he appears in. In his own story quest, Venti has Anemo wings when he reveals his identity to Stanley.

    Albert

Albert

An extremely devoted fan of Barbara usually found hanging outside the Favonius Cathedral. Whenever the Traveler encounters him, he's in the middle of his latest scheme to get Barbara's attention.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: At first, he just seems to be a Loony Fan of Barbara, until her Hangout Event revealed him to be a Stalker with a Crush that she deliberately tries to avoid when possible. This particular approach towards expressing his love is off-putting to everyone who witnesses it firsthand.
  • Flanderization: Was a bit more reasonable when he first appeared, where the most he did was discreetly help Barbara with her chores and get himself hurt on purpose so he can make excuses to meet her. Starting v1.4, however, his Stalker with a Crush tendencies have been amplified to the point that he was building giant flower statues of her.
  • Hated by All: Downplayed. His obsessive streak and inability to take a hint make him an extreme annoyance. The Traveler, who is normally an understanding person, is perpetually exasperated whenever they have to deal with him. And the only reason he hasn't been in far greater trouble is because Barbara is simply too much of an All-Loving Heroine to do something about him, to the point that she even feels guilty when she has to hide from him.
  • Hopeless Suitor: For obvious reasons, he doesn't have a chance in hell.
  • Loony Fan: Is the president and founder of Barbara's fan club and when the Traveler encounters him, Barbara is all he ever talks about.
  • Satellite Character: Is entirely defined by his obsession with Barbara.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: With Sister Victoria, who often accidentally finds him stalking Barbara.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He deliberately injures himself on purpose so he has an excuse to meet Barbara, constantly lurks around the Cathedral under the guise of doing chores, follows her all the way out to Wolvendom during her Hangout Event in the hopes of helping her pick Wolfhook berries, proposes the idea of making a flower statue effigy standing at two stories tall as a Windblume Festival gift, and writes cryptic letters about "burying something dear to her" (which Barbara interprets to mean that Jean was buried alive) as a way of making her go to a specific location where he was waiting for her. He also hangs around the church so often, one of the nuns mistakes him for some kind of spy and commissions the Traveler to confront him. And by the way? Albert's an adult man.

    Ella

Ella Musk

A young scholar who studies the Hilichurlian language, in the hopes of making peaceful contact with this otherwise highly aggressive race. She is usually found inside the library of the Knights of Favonius' headquarters, though she will occasionally go into the City's outskirts to test her theories.

  • Ascended Extra: Plays a large role in the "Mimi Tomo" event, where she serves as a translator to communicate with Hilichurls willing to cooperate.
  • Berserk Button: Do not disrupt her research. In Windblume Festival, she is understandably irritated at the unruly library patrons as they happen to be (unintentionally) disturbing her studies and requests the Traveler to convince said patrons to be quiet.
  • Child Prodigy: She looks to be no older than twelve at the most, and yet she has deciphered Hilichurlian to the point where she can hold simple conversations with Hilichurls. She even calls herself a Professor of Hilichurlian Linguistics and claims to have academic credentials, but this could just be a case of Small Name, Big Ego.
  • Determinator: Is dedicated to studying Hilichurlian in order to achieve reconciliation between Humans and Hilichurls.
  • Dramatic Irony: She believes in coming to a better understanding with Hilichurls and that they're more civilized than people think, unaware that they were once humans of the nation Khaenri'ah or the nations cursed by Celestia.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She is one of the few characters who is willing to make friends with Hilichurls.
  • Older Than They Look: Although she uses a child model, she is Dr. Edith's older sister which makes Ella a very petite adult woman (much like Dori).
  • Punny Name: Her name is a play on tech mogul Elon Musk. MiHoYo once even attempted a viral campaign in which a Twitter account "operated" by Ella would follow Musk's account and invite him to stream the game before dropping it due to backlash.

    Fischl's Parents

???

Amy's mom and dad, who only appear as a voice in Fischl's debut trailer and in the Summertime Odyssey event for the "Summer Fantasia" update.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Subverted. Amy's dad does not hesitate to call her home for dinner in the middle of a story session during her debut trailer, leaving the girl flustered (and insisting she is "Fischl, the Prinzessin der Verurteilung", knowing not of any "Amy"). However, as seen in Summertime Odyssey, there's a reason why they no longer refer to her as this.
  • Bit Character: Though they're The Voice, they still play a notable part in the Summertime Odyssey event by virtue of being involved in Amy's background.
  • Good Parents: They truly love their daughter and made sure to play into her fantasies when she was a girl, helping her cope with her Friendless Background. Even nowadays, they may no longer indulge Amy, but still want what's best for her.
  • Hands-Off Parenting: Given their daughter's job as an investigator for the Adventurer's Guild and the fact she has a Vision, it's safe to say they probably don't get involved much in the girl's job.
  • Parents as People: As seen in Summertime Odyssey, during Amy's mirages, they're portrayed quite realistically. They love their daughter, but at the same time, when Amy reaches an older age, they tell her to cut the roleplay off and dedicate herself to more meaningful stuff like music.
  • The Voice: We never see the two on the flesh, and only get to hear their voice in both Fischl's trailer and in the Summertime Odyssey event.

    Glory

Glory

A blindfolded girl who is wishing her lover Godwin, a Knight of Favonius, safe journey. She is Grace's adopted daughter and Timmie's adoptive big sister.
  • Blindfolded Vision: She is blind and thus wears a blindfold to hide it.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Is awaiting Godwin's return from Varka's expedition, unaware that not only he is the only knight to miss it, but had to continue the illusion of being in a faraway land out of fear that she'll be disappointed.

    Gygax

Gygax

Am artisan who offers the Windtrace and knows its history.

    José

Six-Fingered José

Voiced by: Cory Yee (English), Kunihiro Daisuke (Japanese)
A bard in the city of Mondstadt.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: He normally peppers his speech with Spanish when talked to but, when rescued as part of a random event, he will talk like the restnote  with no traces of Spanish at all.
  • Noodle Implements: José tried playing his lyre and insisted singing while on a Wind Glider. As a result, he fell into a wishing well, had his gliding license suspended for five years, and had to perform community service.

    Liben

Liben

Voiced by: Fukuma Shunpei (Japanese), Armen Taylor (English)

A peculiar-looking Liyuan merchant who sells random goodies in Slime boxes called Box o' Marvels. He is the primary NPC of the "Marvelous Merchandise" event series.

  • Elvis Impersonator: Sports a pompadour that gives him Elvis vibes.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When he made his debut, he has to be found on different locations. His subsequent appearances have him stay at Mondstadt at all times.
  • Fetch Quest: The Marvelous Merchandise event involves trading Liben various common materials in exchange for random Box o' Marvels which contain Primogems and other rewards like Mora, Hero's Wit experience points, and ascension materials. The player can only do one trade per day which adds up to a total of seven trades for the duration of the event, but after five trades, the Mega Box o' Marvels becomes available to claim.
  • Greed: He first debuted in the 2020 Marvelous Merchandise event as a greedy curios salesman looking to strike it rich after receiving confidential information from the Liyue Qixing that changes would be moving forward for all of Liyue's merchants. Not wanting to get left behind in profits, Liben enlists the Traveler's help in an attempt to price gouge everyday materials, but he later finds out that he had been duped by Ningguang, who planned to expose his greed from the start. Left in debt, he learns his lesson and re-assesses his situation carefully, not wanting to commit the same mistakes again.
  • Intrepid Merchant: Liben travels around Teyvat in search of profitable goods he can send to Sumeru, and he's willing to strike deals with the Traveler in exchange for giving them Primogems and other goodies.
  • Mr. Exposition: His dialogues sometimes tease about upcoming unreleased areas, such as informing the Traveler about the existence of Qiaoying Village in northern Liyue, near Fontaine, during the May 2022 event rerun, which as of Fontaine's release, has not been made available in the game yet or how in the version 2.6 event where he mentions the dark air around Sumeru and warns the traveler to try avoiding it and hinting at the corruption in the Akademyia and their alliance with Scaramouche.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Stands out amongst the NPCs for sporting a unique appearance.
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: In the April 2021 rerun, Liben describes having eaten some weird mushrooms in Sumeru just to test out their market value, which he says he "nearly ended up in the second most tragic situation of his life: dying while he still has money to spare". By the time the Traveler reaches Sumeru, Tighnari does explain that most mushrooms native to Sumeru tend to be hallucinogenic and/or toxic, hence he prohibits ingestion without proper preparation.

    Nimrod

Nimrod

Kaeya's drinking buddy and an informant.
  • The Alcoholic: Nimrod is a notorious drunkard among the citizenry of Mondstadt. One Daily Commission, "Presumption of Innocence", has Sister Victoria ask the Traveler to check in on him, while another, "A Little Booze Doesn't Hurt...", has him ask the Traveler to distract his wife Eury by pandering to her shopaholic tendencies while he gets smashed again.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: On one hand, Nimrod is a notorious drunkard. On the other hand, he is also one of the most knowledgeable men in Mondstadt.
  • Information Broker: He is one of Kaeya's sources of information.
  • The Mole: During the "Lantern Rite" event he was sent by Kaeya to infiltrate a group of Treasure Hoarders suspected of attempting a sabotage of the Lantern Rite in Liyue.

    Timaeus

Timaeus

A scholar and apprentice alchemist to Albedo, a captain of the Knights of Favonius.
  • The Apprentice: To Albedo, alongside Sucrose.
  • Self-Deprecation: Timaeus has low self-esteem, and considers himself an inadequate apprentice to Albedo, let alone a peer to Sucrose.
  • Ship Tease: With Ying'er as of the 2023 Windblume Festival event.

    Timmie

Timmie

A young boy who often hangs out on the bridge leading to the City of Mondstadt and feeding nearby pigeons. He is Glory's adopted younger brother.

  • Butt-Monkey: A meta example. Since the flocks of pigeons serve as a good source of Fowl for cooking, players often use them as target practice as well as a way to test AOE abilities.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He often feeds the pigeons and ducks along the bridge to the City.
  • King of Games: He's a Level 10 Duel in Genius Invocation TCG. Also, during the events of Duel! The Summoners' Summit!, he wins in the Mondstadt finals against Kaeya, who claims Timmie had him on the ropes for the entire match. As of the event "Duel! The Summoners' Summit!", Timmie is officially Mondstadt's champion of Genius Invokation TCG.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Unbeknownst to him, his father died in a hunting accident a few years ago, though Draff, his father's hunting companion, and Sister Grace, his surrogate mother figure, are unable to tell him that until he comes of age.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: His Imaginary Friend is a Ruin Guard, of all things
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Timmie often reacts adversely whenever you either scare away or even accidentally kill his avian friends.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Timmie spends the day waiting for his father, a hunter, to return home, unaware that he is no longer coming back.

    Vile

Vile

An informant who can be found outside the Cathedral during the daytime, or outside the Knights of Favonius' headquarters relaying information to Athos during nighttime.
  • The Informant: To "That Guy" or a "Mysterious Gentleman" (who is implied to be Kaeya).
  • Information Broker: She deals in giving out lots of information; from Sara wanting to import Jueyun Chili from Liyue (that even Barbara herself can't handle), to Amber burning the steak (and the kitchen) during the Knights' hangout, to Lisa using a web-shaped net to enhance the tea's flavor, to Diluc's meeting with Snezhnayan merchants, etc.

Cat's Tail Tavern

    Diona

Diona Kätzlein

Introduced: November 11, 2020 (v1.1 "A New Star Approaches" [first half])
Voiced by: Ya Nuo (Chinese), Shiori Izawa (Japanese), Woo Jeong-shin (Korean), Dina Sherman (English)

Kätzlein Cocktail
""How did the Destroyer of the Wine Industry become the Cat's Tail's mascot...?" Y—You're asking this just to make fun of me! Ohhh, you're awful! I won't be giving YOU any more drinks, not even water!"

Rarity: 4★
Element: Cryo
Weapon: Bow
Constellation: Feles, the Cat

Bartender of the Cat's Tail Tavern and self-proclaimed "Wine Industry Slayer." Deeply embarrassed by the drunken antics of her father Draff, leader of the hunting bands of Springvale, she has set off on a one-girl crusade to sabotage Mondstadt's wine industry, starting with working as a bartender at Cat's Tail, where she busies herself making bad-tasting alcoholic drinks. Now if only her concoctions did not turn out far tastier than she'd like...

Diona brews healing and defensive concoctions to the party when not shooting down her foes. Her Elemental Skill, fires a pair of icicles and at the same time envelops the active character with a cat-shaped shield that additionally infuses their attacks with Cryo, with its held form adding three projectiles and further boosting the shield's resilience. Her Elemental Burst, Signature Mix, tosses a flask of ice-cold beverage that creates a Drunken Mist field which periodically blows gusts of cold wind that simultaneously damages enemies and heals allies within.note
  • Achilles' Heel: She shares Bennett's limitation of only being able to heal one character at a time with their Burst. This normally isn't a big deal since the only party member who's at risk of taking damage is the active one, but in situations where the entire party can take damage, her limitations become more noticeable.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Her mother has never been seen in-game so far, but her line about enjoying her cooking "last night" in Kaeya's Hangout Event tree shows that she's alive and seemingly well.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats, naturally. Being a Cat Girl aside, she works at the Cat's Tail Bar, has a pouch in the shape of a cat's paw, and her Constellation is a cat. Not to mention the palms of her gloves resemble a cat's paw, the bottom of her shoes have a cat's paw design, and if the way her shoes are designed is anything to go by, she also walks on the balls of her feet, similar to a cat.
  • Badass Adorable: Diona is a cute little Cat Girl who, despite her age, is still good at using her bow.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her Skill shoots a pair of icy projectiles that home in on enemies; upon contact, they set up a cat's-head-shaped shield with heightened resilience against Cryo damage; in its held form, she can fire five projectiles and enjoy an additional 75% boost to the shield's Damage Absorption Bonus in exchange for extending its cooldown time from six seconds to fifteen. Her second Constellation upgrade, Shaken, Not Purred, adds a 15% boost to both the projectiles' damage and the shield's Damage Absorption Bonus, as well as allows Diona to create a shield for any co-op ally with half the Damage Absorption Bonus of the main shield and lasts five seconds.
  • Berserk Button: Praise for her drinks, because she wants them to taste horrible. At one point, Elzer pressed her button especially hard by saying that he wants to recruit her to Dawn Winery and help raise Mondstadt's viticultural profile even higher. He got bitten by her in response.
  • Bigotry Exception: Not exactly "bigotry" per se, but despite her hatred of alcohol, the people that drink it, and the people who manufacture it, she seems to have a high opinion of Lisa and gets along with Eula.note  Alchemical Ascension event shows she is also capable of getting along with Venti who even provides her an idea of an alcoholic beverage that doesn't make people drunk which she is completely in favor of.
  • Bizarre Beverage Use: Her Burst has her toss a beverage mixer at enemies, releasing a freezing cocktail of alcohol to inflict Cryo damage, as well as heal any ally standing in the puddle.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Downplayed. Her views on alcohol can be summed as this: those who don't drink it or contribute to its production are good, while alcoholics, bartenders, wineries/brewers, and even bards who entertain drunkards are bad. Granted, she is shown to make exceptions for the latter, such as still caring about her oft-smashed father, getting along well with her employer Margaret, having a relatively high opinion of Lisa, being stated to bond with Eula, and even inviting Venti to taste test her drinks.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her Character Story reveals that, on the day of her seventh birthday, a spring fairy (later identified at the end of the "Waterborne Poetry" event as the Oceanid Callirhoe) blessed her so that her concoctions will always be "refreshing as springs of ever-melting snow," an encounter she kept dismissing as a dream. Because of this, her idea of trying to make disgusting booze that turns people away from alcohol always fails when she gets praised for her mixes instead, and she never realizes why, even after Callirhoe openly told her so.
  • Broken Pedestal: Downplayed—her hatred for alcohol stems from her embarrassment at seeing her father Draff make a fool of himself while inebriated, but she still doesn't blame him or his drinking habits (she believes her father is faultless) as much as she blames alcohol itself.
  • Captain Oblivious: Even though Callirhoe tells her upfront that she gave her that blessing, Diona fails to connect the dots and remains oblivious about why she keeps making delicious drinks despite all her efforts to fail.
  • Cat Girl: Diona is a Kätzlein (although her in-game profile says she's only "inherited trace amounts of non-human blood"), evidenced with her feline ears and tail. When she stretches her body, she does so like a cat. Her bloodline makes her and her father skillful hunters. The patrons at Cat's Tail once thought the ears and tail are just her gimmicks for her job, but to their surprise, they found out that they are real. The Genshin Concert Promotional video also shows that her hands, feet, and lower legs are cream white, implying that she has a fine layer of fur on her limbs.note
  • Combat Medic: Her Burst creates a Drunken Mist field which simultaneously deals Cryo damage to all enemies and heals all characters within its radius. Her fourth-ascension passive, Drunkards' Farce, adds the ability to inflict a 10% Attack penalty on enemies; her fourth Constellation upgrade, Wine Industry Slayer, also adds a 60% reduction to the charging time of Diona's aimed shots, and her sixth, Cat's Tail Closing Time, allows it to either increase allies' Healing Bonus while they have no more than half their HP or increase their Elemental Mastery by 200 points otherwise.
  • Consummate Professional: She's out to mix the worst drink possible using the weirdest ingredients available, but for some reason, she just won't cut down on her mixing standards. Can't have awful-looking, hastily-mixed drinks served to customers!
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Enforced. She's to drinks what Xiangling is to food; the difference is that Diona does not intend her drinks to be anything close to tasty. This is, however, because of Callirhoe's blessing that made every drink she prepares delicious, making her incredibly popular with the the bar patrons, which just leaves Diona sighing in frustration.
  • Daddy's Girl: Diona adores her father except when he has been drinking. So much so that this is her motivation to destroy Mondstadt's wine industry.
(about Her Father) "I adore my Daddy more than anyone else! He's the greatest! But... Daddy after he drinks, ugh... Argh! I must bring an end to the wine industry of Mondstadt, and soon! No time for chit-chat!"
  • A Day in the Limelight: The "Waterborne Poetry" event is somewhat of one for her, as part of the plot revolves around her gift given to her by Callirhoe and their shared history.
  • Denial of Animality: At least in one of her lines, she insists that "she's not a cat" when she is catching butterflies, claiming that she is going to need them for her cocktails.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even with her vendetta against alcohol, there are lines that Diona won't cross.
    • While she may want to destroy Mondstadt's wine industry, even she knows better than to let Klee near Cat's Tail.
(about Klee) "Every time Klee wants to play with me, I take her somewhere far from the tavern. Alcohol and explosives... yeah, that's a dangerous combination! I mean, do I want to destroy the wine industry of Mondstadt? Yes, but not in that sense!"
    • She is mortified when Chongyun's pure-yang spirit overloads from the spices in the drink she mixes for him. She only wants to scare people off from alcohol by making nasty-tasting drinks, not ones that could actually have health consequences.
  • Foil:
    • To Xiangling. Both are masters of their respective crafts despite their use of questionable ingredients, but where Diona was blessed by Callirhoe so that any drink she makes will always be outstanding, Xiangling earned her culinary chops through hard work. Diona also actively tries to make the worst drink imaginable while Xiangling strives to continually improve her skills. Finally, they form a Fire/Ice Duo with their Visions.
    • To Chongyun. Both are youthful Cryo Vision holders who excel at their respective occupations thanks to a unique gift they possess, but which both of them take grievance with. In Chongyun's case, however, he's a Claymore-using exorcist who's aware of his overabundance of Yang energy and bothered by it because he believes if he continues to rely on it as a crutch, he'll be unprepared for when he runs into a truly powerful evil spirit. As for Diona, she is a bow-using bartender who was blessed by a fairy to always make delicious drinks, something she writes off as a dream to this day, and can't stand it because it counteracts her goals to destroy Monstadt's wine industry. Paimon even lampshades that the two are rather similar in the "Waterborne Poetry" event. The main difference is that, unlike Diona, Chongyun knows he has this blessing, while Diona doesn't know why she keeps making delicious drinks no matter how gross she does them.
  • Furry Reminder: Her Kätzlein blood makes her behave like a typical cat. She's a Tsundere, a skillful hunter, likes to stretch like a cat, and walks on her toes instead of the sole.
  • Gargle Blaster: She intended for her alcoholic concoctions to be so nasty, that anyone unfortunate enough to drink it would swear off alcohol for the rest of their lives. Her results, on the other hand, turn out anything but the dreadful drinks she is trying to make.
(about Chat: Thinking) "Lizard Tail, Pepper, Starconch... what else do I need to create the most dreadfully disgusting cocktail?"
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It doesn't take much to rile Diona. Of course, she'd have you believe she's very tolerant.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In one route of her Hangout Event tree, Diona gives her usual spiel about hating alcohol and wanting to make disgusting drinks, but if the player chooses to suggest that her cocktails aren't that special and that they'd prefer playing with cats to drinking them she'll be hopping mad. Then again, kind of justified given her tsundere attitude.
  • Irony: She hates alcohol and wants to ruin the wine industry in Mondstadt, hence her self-proclaimed title of "Wine Industry Slayer." The game describes her mixing methods as impeccable, and her Character Details section states that she does not actually intend to make delicious cocktails. Therefore, her products are contrary to her goals.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her Black-and-White Morality regarding alcohol can make her extremely rude and hostile to otherwise nice individuals just because of their willingness to drink or for simply having a job related in some way to alcohol, it's hard not to see Diona's point about Mondstadt's wine industry; combined with the lax laws in Mondstadt, its great influence led to widespread alcoholism, with more than a few characters being known addicts, with Addled Addict being largely averted to show just how much this affects their personal lives and relationships.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: An extremely grumpy girl who wants to destroy the wine industry despite the fact her retribution is misplaced and it's her dad to blame. That said, she's a Daddy's Girl and can sometimes show kindness to others (if in her own way).
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: Her least favorite food is this. Somewhat justified given cats (and quite possible Kätzlein, like herself) are carnivore.
"Carrots, potatoes, onions, tomatoes... yuck, I don't like the taste of any of those vegetables. In fact, I don't eat vegetables at all!"
  • Lethal Chef: Subverted. Becoming a bad bartender who purposely makes bad drinks is her life goal; unfortunately, Callirhoe's blessing causes all her attempts at making bad drinks fall well below expectations, as her customers find them delicious. It's a telling sign when in her Hangout Event, the Traveler succeeds in making a truly terrible drink when she can't, much to her dismay.
    • It's played straight when it comes to food, though. In her and Xiangling's voice lines for each other, they exchanged knowledge of ingredients; while Xiangling's intentionally horrible food combination (as requested by Diona) ends up as praised, Diona's recipes for Xiangling, naturally, end up coming out as awful.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Daddy's Girl she is, she blames Mondstadt's wine industry and alcohol for Draff's drinking problem instead of Draff's personal failings, and thus tries to destroy the industry by being a bartender that mixes bad drinks to turn people away from alcohol. Combined with how she thinks making people think alcohol tastes bad would turn the people away from it—which is a thought common to children—it shows how childish her thought process still is.
  • Odd Friendship: Well, its more of an alliance, but during the Alchemical Ascension event she forms one with, of all people, Venti to help look for new ingredients.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: According to her "Vision" anecdote, after saving her father from a grueling storm, she offered to mix him a drink to ease his injuries, and he gladly appreciated it. At her core, she still loves her father, even if she may not like to see him being drunk (and she still looked down on alcohol after that incident), and it was this devotion that earned her a Cryo Vision.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: As a child, Diona used to come out at night and talk with a spring fairy near of Springvale (later identified in the "Waterborne Poetry" event as Callirhoe). On her seventh birthday, she appeared to her for the last time and gave her a blessing to "have her cup always run over with sweet wine of celebration." Years later, Diona has forgotten her encounter, and when she does, she tends to dismiss them as childhood dreams, even when Callirhoe openly admits so.
  • Power Stereotype Flip: A Cryo Vision holder who, instead of distant and stoic, is a modern Harsh Tsundere.
  • Red Baron: The self-proclaimed "Wine Industry Slayer."
  • Regenerating Mana: Her first Constellation upgrade, Lingering Flavor, restores 15 Energy once the Drunken Mist field dissipates.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Befitting her food-related profession, her utility passive, Complimentary Bar Food, gives her a 12% chance to cook HP-restoring dishes twice.
  • Springtime for Hitler: While Diona intentionally tries to mix horrible drinks to turn her customers off from alcohol, they always somehow end up tasting amazing, making her an incredibly popular bartender. She only applied as a bartender as her first step in her plan to destroy Mondstadt's wine industry, which has only really had the opposite effect.
  • Status Buff: Her first-ascension passive, Cat's Tail Secret Menu, allows the shield generated by her Skill to increase the movement speed of the active character and reduce their stamina consumption by 10%.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Like typical cats, she loves fish.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Inverted. Diona looks nothing like her father Draff due to him using a generic Mondstat NPC model. They do, however, both have cat ears.
  • Support Party Member: Diona offers a bit of everything — healing, low-cooldown cleansing, and low-cooldown shielding.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Diona is, to date, the smallest of the playable Mondstadt cast outside the Knights of Favonius (and presumably among the youngest, with Klee from the Knights being stated to hail from a longer-lived race).
  • Trrrilling Rrrs: she rolls her Rs when saying "perfect" during the Alchemical Ascension event.
  • Tsundere: A modern Harsh type, befitting both a rebellious young girl and a cat.
    • She may sometimes show some "vulnerability" or speak about something nice, only to act harshly afterward to protect her dignity.
(About Good Night) "Without cat vision, will you be okay walking home in the dark? If you need me to escort you... Huh? There's lights? ...Wh-Who said anything about escorting you? Go on now."
    • In one of the scenarios of her Hangout Event, choosing the Stealth-Based Mission option to sneak into a Hilichurl tribe will have Diona show concern for the Traveler's safety while simultaneously denying said concerns:
"D-Don't think that I'm worried about you. Because I'm not! If you get noticed, then I'll definitely be in trouble too. So just be careful, okay?"
    • Her idolization of her father is often offset with her exasperation over his drinking habits.
    • She acts like this towards the Cat's Tail's cats as well. Despite routinely expressing how annoying they are and how irritating it is that some customers are only there to play with the kitties, it's noted that she understands each individual cat's personality very well, orders them custom toys and food, and personally cares for them when off shift.
  • Unseen No More: NPCs talked about Diona prior to her addition in v1.1. These include her father Draff and distant ancestor Olaf following Xiangling's Story Quest, along with various advertisements for Cat's Tail specifically advertising her as their new bartender.
  • Unknown Rival: While she despises anyone who drinks or has remotely anything to do with alcohol, she sees Diluc as her worst enemy due to him owning the largest winery in Mondstadt. He is largely unaware of her enmity, and is even surprised at the thought of another bartender who hates alcohol just like him.
  • Unusual Hiring Practices: Margaret hired the underaged Diona for her Cat's Tail Inn just because Diona's cat-like features were just too cute to not go with the cat-themed tavern.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, A-Another Round? and Double Shot, On The Rocks, add three levels to, respectively, her Burst and Skill.
  • Vague Age: Diona talks like a child, looks like a child, and acts like a child, but she is a bartender, and the legal drinking age in Tevyat is late teens or early twenties. It is possible that the Cat's Tail hired her as a server despite not being able to legally consume it, which would explain this. The "Of Drink A-Dreaming" event supports this, as while the Traveler is only allowed to brew non-alcoholic drinks, the reasoning has nothing to do with their apparent age. It helps that Diona is likely to have never actually drunk her own mixes as she intended them to taste horrible.
  • Verbal Tic: In the Japanese dub, she often adds "-nya" at the end of her sentences.

    Margaret

Margaret

Proprietor of the Cat's Tail Tavern.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She owns several cats, among which are Nelson, Paisley, Prince, Roger, & Butterfly.
  • Shout-Out: Some of Margaret's cats are Prince, Roger, and Nelson, an obvious nod to Prince, and Paisley is named from one of his music albums and studios.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When the Traveler, Paimon, and Sucrose show up to the tavern to learn to play the trading card game, Margaret tells Diona to teach them how to play. Diona quickly declines, bemoaning that as the TCG grows in popularity, more people will show up to play, and they'll start drinking more, and Mondstadt's alcohol industry will begin to boom, something she desperately wishes not to happen. Shuyun, "interpreting" Prince, says that actually players will start drinking less if the TCG grows in popularity as they'll want to have access to their full faculties, meaning that the TCG becoming popular could mean the end of Mondstadt's alcohol industry. When a shocked Diona asks if that's true, Margaret quickly butts in with a "Sure, why not?" and tells Diona again to teach you the basics of the game.

Lawrence Clan

    Eula

Eula Lawrence

The Spindrift Knight and the Captain of the Knights of Favonius' Reconnaissance Company, who's been disowned by her clan for joining the Knights.
See her entry here.

    Lessig

Lessig

Eula’s cousin, who travels to Sumeru in the “Secret Summer Paradise“ event to search for a means of reviving their clan, prompting Eula to go searching for him.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has the Lawrence’s natural self-inflated ego and obsession with maintaining his dignity at the cost of coming off as rude. However, his incidental self-discovery led to him that sees him act polite to others his family would ordinarily talk down to and led to a lot of his resentment towards Eula for "betraying the clan" being dropped, even if he tries pretending it hasn't when she shows up.
  • Meaningful Name: Lessig's name is a reference to Lawrence Lessig, one of the founders of Creative Commons and an expert on intellectual properties. Given Eula's name, it appears to be a joke by Hoyoverse on copyright and distribution of works.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Eula’s comments before we meet him suggests that he was just as charming as the rest of his family. By the time she meets him again, Lessig, while still somewhat haughty, appears willing to help other people and is capable of being polite to people the rest of his family would see as their lessers, much to her surprise. He reveals that this is because his journey, while started in an attempt to restore the clan's corrupt regime, proved surprisingly eye-opening, with him noticing how differently people outside of Mondstadt treated him due to not knowing or caring about his heritage, and came to prefer it to being hated and ostracised like he was used to. This caused him to realise how flawed the Lawrence Clan is and abandon their notions of restoring their power, as well as mend his relationship with Eula.
  • Uniformity Exception: Much like his uncle, he wears a variant of a Mondstadter outfit worn by wealthy residents, but tailored for members of the Lawrence Clan like him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Admits to being the cause of Veluriyam Mirage's backwards state, having touched the domain's core due to it reminding him of a gift he got from his grandfather when he was younger. This, alongside his new nicer demeanour, compels him to do what he can to help fix things.

    Schubert

Schubert Lawrence

Voiced By: River Vitae (English)
Eula's uncle and a member of the modern day Lawrence Clan.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He thinks he has the situation under control by working with the Fatui. Once things go pear-shaped, he quickly folds like a sheet of paper.
  • Dirty Coward: Once his plans have been foiled, he tries to cohere Eula into betraying the Knights of Favonius. Eula puts her foot down causing him to back off.
  • Entitled Bastard: He thinks that he can do whatever he wants because of how he’s descended from the old aristocracy. It never works due to how hated his family is.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Once the Traveler learns how to 'properly' speak to a noble, he starts acting like a halfway decent nice guy.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: The Traveler wins his trust incredibly easily, just by sucking up to him with a few fancy words and giving him a food gift. This is enough for him to let the Traveler in on his plan to take over Mondstadt with the Fatui's help, which the Traveler promptly demolishes.
  • Mirror Character: With Kujou Takayuki. Like Takayuki, Schubert worked with the Fatui under the belief that it was for the good of their country. But whereas Takayuki worked with the Fatui to consolidate his power, Schubert worked the Fatui to seize power. Likewise, Takayuki believed that the Raiden Shogun could dispose of the Fatui if they ever stepped out of line, while Schubert believed that he could get rid of the Fatui when he no longer needed them. Lastly, while Takayuki was, in his own way, loyal to his country’s god, Schubert had no loyalty to his country’s god, Barbatos.
  • More Hateable Minor Villain: Compared to the Abyss Order and the Fatui, there’s nothing redeemable about him. While the Fatui are merely doing their duty in the name of their country and their God, and the Abyss Order are eventually revealed to be survivors of the Cataclysm who were cursed by the Heavenly Principles, Shubert is a selfish entitled Upper-Class Twit, who wants to restore the Lawrence clan to their former glory.
  • Nostalgia Filter: A disturbing version. He decries modern Mondstadt's society because of their laid-back nature and will only happily reminisce the old days; the days where commoners live under fear, and anyone who doesn't treat the aristocracy (read:Lawrence Clan) with proper respect are to be given, in his words, "a swift whipping".
  • The Quisling: He plans to sell out Mondstadt to the Fatui in exchange for restoring the aristocracy with him in charge.
  • Uniformity Exception: He wears a variant of a wealthy Mondstadter outfit worn by Elzer and Connor, however his version is unbuttoned, has a necktie, and sports the Lawrence Clan's crest on his outfit.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Rich, incredibly entitled, and incredibly stupid. To the point the Fatui view him as a naïve idiot.

Springvale

A village of hunter-gatherers south of the City of Mondstadt.

Kätzlein Clan

    Draff

Draff Kätzlein

Voiced by: Cory Yee (English)

Diona's father and leader of the hunting bands of Springvale, whose exceptional hunting skills are overshadowed by his legendary alcoholism.

  • The Alcoholic: He loves drinking, so much so that he's known as one of the Four Drunkards of Mondstadt for the sheer amount of drinking he does.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: When asked about his family the very first thing he says is to stay away from his daughter. However, he doesn't seem to have a problem seeing Diona and the Traveler together during her Hangout Event, but he's also drunk/sobering up at the time so his senses likely aren't all there.
  • Cat Folk: Draff has some feline characteristics as part of the Katzlein family.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was good friends with Timmie's deceased father and was so inspired by his attempts at being a good role model for his son that Draff tried to better himself for Diona and quit drinking. When he later died from a hunting accident Draff fell off the wagon and hid the truth from Timmie, periodically sending him a letter and some money to keep up the ruse that his dad's still alive.
  • Drunken Master: Even with his love of the bottle, during Diona's Hangout Event he somehow managed to sneak through a Hilichurl camp undetected while completely plastered.
  • Little Bit Beastly: His Kätzlein ancestry gives him cat ears and better hunting capabilities much like his daughter and ancestor, yet unlike Diona lacks a tail and walks flatfooted (as opposed to Diona's digitigrade stance).
  • Parents as People: He loves his daughter and does try to reign in his habits around her, but in the end he can't resist a drink and can be found outside his house, drunk, every night.
  • Red Baron: "Oddears the Incredible Hunter," derived from both his appearance and skills. And as stated, he's one of the Four Drunkards of Mondstadt.

    Olaf

Olaf Kätzlein

An ancient Mondstadter frozen by a Cryo Regisvine for three hundred years after chasing a boar to an underground ruin, as well as a distant ancestor of Diona and Draff.

  • Fish out of Water: As he belonged to the previous generation of Springvale, he has no idea how to adapt to modern day Mondstadt. Although downplayed as their love for drinking still remained.
  • Human Popsicle: He was frozen in time by a Cryo Regisvine for 300 years. By the time he is thawed, he is confused by the present-day Springvale's status.

Miscellaneous Residents

    Finch

Old Finch

A old man who spends his freetime by Spingvale's spring, hoping to one day meet the Spring Fairy who he befriended in his youth again. His encounter with the Spring Fairy is the basis of the book "Heart of Clear Springs" He plays a bigger role in the Waterborne Poetry event.
  • Always with You: The Waterborne Poetry event has Callirhoe lose her physical form and return to the spring, but she gives Finch one last gift, which is literally her heart, before she disappears, ensuring that he'll always be able to visit her in his dreams.
  • I Will Wait for You: He went on with his life when Spring Fairy stopped talking to him one day, but, once he reached his twilight years, he visited the spring every morning in hopes of seeing her again one more time. He's rewarded for his patience in the 'Waterborne Poetry'' event.

    Hopkins

Hopkins the Marvelous

A merchant who sold the Holy water in Springvale.
  • Jerkass: He displays this prominently during Razor's Story Quest. He is adamant in wanting revenge against the wolves (despite, by all accounts, animals are considered innocent), insults Amber when she tried to warn him not to do anything reckless, and accuses Razor of being a Category Traitor for the crime of being Raised by Wolves.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Is very insistent on dishing out the good ol' fashioned Springvale vengeance for any perceived slight (no matter how minor), completely ignoring (or not caring) the warnings from both Draff and Amber.
  • Slimeball: Loves to make his fortune by selling Holy Water (which is actually spring water blessed by the Spring Fairy). And if the Traveler simply says goodbye to him when confronted about it, he advises them to not tell everyone, implying that none of the residents are aware of his dealings.

    Jotun

Jotun

A Springvale hunter who doesn't mind bringing in good or bad news.

  • The Ditherer: Type 5. He prefers to be given orders by anyone because it's much easier when he is told to and doesn't like the idea of having an occupation where one (such as himself) would have to adapt and think for oneself. Unfortunately, this makes him very easy to be strung along with Hopkin's vendetta.
  • Jerkass: For a ditherer like him, he can be just as spiteful as Hopkins as revealed in Razor's Story Quest. He angrily questions Amber on how someone from the Knights of Favonius can let someone (Razor) off the hook, completely ignoring the testimony from her, Razor, and Paimon.

Wolf Boy
"I have iron claws and teeth of thunder. I protect you."

Rarity: 4★
Element: Electro
Weapon: Claymore
Constellation: Lupus Minor, the Wolf Pup

A mysterious boy who lives and hunts on Wolvendom, a secluded valley west of the City of Mondstadt, with a pack of wolves. Having been raised by wolves all his life, his recent encounters with humans have him beginning to question where he truly belongs. He first meets the Traveler in Wolvendom, where they strike a friendship before they re-encounter briefly before the Traveler's departure to Inazuma.

Razor fights with sheer agression not unlike his wolf companions. His Elemental Skill, Claw and Thunder, is a slash that generates Electro Sigils, of which he can hold up to three at once, can boost his Energy Recharge, and are consumed to restore some Energy whenever he uses the held form of the Skill. His Elemental Burst, Lightning Fang, summons the Wolf Within, a phantasmal werewolf that attacks in tandem with him, imbuing his slashes with Electro and enhancing his attacking speed and resistance to Electro damage, flinching, and Electro-charged reactions.note
  • Animal Motifs: Wolves, naturally for someone who was raised by them. Besides his Constellation depicting a wolf pup, he prefers to eat meat, has silver hair reminiscent of a wolf's typical fur color, tends to run or stand on all fours, fights savagely like a wolf, and even howls like a wolf.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Razor's fighting style encourage this, with his Skill granting him Electro Sigils that boost his Energy Recharge and can be consumed in its held form to immediately restore Energy, allowing him to trigger his Burst as often as possible.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: His hair is extremely long, to the point you think it was a cape at first.
  • The Berserker: His signature playstyle is to unleash his Burst as soon as possible and rip the enemy in close combat. Since it expires when he is switched out, players are incentivized to keep him fighting as long as possible. And even then, thanks to a naturally high Energy Recharge rate (through his Skill), it is possible for him to refill his energy before the Wolf Within leaves, allowing him to activate it again quickly.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Klee.
    • As weary and exasperated as he may get whenever Klee causes trouble, she says in her voice lines that he always protects her from danger, even when she is the cause of said danger (which she admits is usually the case).
    • During the "Midsummer Island" Event, the "Dodo-King" was able to coerce him into traveling to the Golden Apple Archipelago by claiming Klee was in danger.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Razor makes his first on-screen appearance during his Story Quest, he saves the Traveler and Paimon from a horde of Slimes.
  • Big Eater: Implied. During the 2021 Windblume Festival, after Bennett had apparently already fed Razor an apple, the other still asks for more food after he finished it. Later on, Bennett offers to treat Razor to a meal. Razor's voice-over for Bennett even alludes to it.
"Bennett.... Much talking. Eat with him, never full."
  • But Thou Must!: While new players will assume that completing Razor's story quest is optional, it ends up becoming mandatory along with Amber's since it's required to unlock his quest in the first place to complete Archon Quest Chapter I Act IV.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Though most Mondstadters barely know anything about Razor's background, eyewitnesses claim that he has keen senses and is agile enough to keep up with his wolf pack. Characters guess that this is a result of him being Raised by Wolves.
  • Clear My Name: His Story Quest revolves around trying to clear the name of his lupical after villagers accuse them of attacking them.
  • Connected All Along: Almost everyone who contributed to Razor's growth and character is affiliated with each other, especially the Knights of Favonius. Varka named him and taught him how to use a sword; Lisa taught him how to use his Electro Vision; he befriended the "bright red burny girl" Klee; and he has made more friends among the Knights, namely the Traveler and Amber, during his Story Quest.
  • Contemplate Our Navels: Razor was Raised by Wolves, but meeting a human for the first time shook his identity, making Razor ask if he is a human or a wolf. In his Story Quest, Andrius convinces him that he is a human, especially since he now has more human friends, such as the Traveler and Amber, to prove it.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: His first-ascension passive, Awakening, reduces the cooldown time of his Skill by 18% (hence reducing that for its base form from 6 seconds to 4.92, and that for its held form from 10 to 8.2), and even resets it altogether whenever Razor summons the Wolf Within.
  • Covered with Scars: He has multiple scars on his body as seen on his cheek and arm. These were the results of him living in the wild.
  • Critical Status Buff: A variant—Razor's fourth-ascension passive, Hunger, increases his Energy Recharge percentage by 30% whenever he has less than half his Energy.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: His fourth Constellation upgrade, Bite, allows the base form of his Skill to inflict a seven-second-long 15% penalty to enemy Defense.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He is the central character of the "Of Ballads and Brews" event, which deals with him trying to learn about his parents.
  • Death by Origin Story: Implied to be what happened to his parents, leading him to be Raised by Wolves.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Vegetables. Considering he was Raised by Wolves, and those are carnivorous, it makes sense.
(Least Favorite Food) "Uh, greens are bad. Animal eats green things, then I eat animal!"
  • Elemental Personalities: An energetic, active boy who was Raised by Wolves, and behaves wild like lightning — quite appropriately, he wields an Electro Vision.
  • Elemental Punch: His Skill has him clawing at his foes, which creates an Electro Sigil (of which he can hold up to three at once) that boosts his Energy recharge by 20% apiece (to a maximum of 60%), and can be consumed in its held form to immediately restore 5 Energy apiece (to a maximum of 15 points).
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: While his official artwork has them, they're still extremely hard to see, but they are a little more prominent on his in-game model.
  • Fighting Spirit: His Burst summons a phantasmal werewolf made that follows his attacks with its own.
  • Ground Punch: The held form of his Skill has Razor punch the ground and zap everything around him. If he has Electro Sigils stocked, they will be consumed to restore 5 Energy apiece (meaning with a full three stacks, he can regain 15 at once).
  • Lightning Bruiser: Pun aside, Razor is a sturdy fighter in his own right, and his Elemental Burst speeds up his slow claymore attack animations, allowing him to bring loads of fast damage.
  • Locked in a Room: Or in his case, a jail cell with Bennett. This occurred during the 2021 Windblume Festival when both boys were trapped while hiding away from the Ruin Guard of the Thousand Winds Temple.
  • Mirror Character: As of v4.1, Cyno and Razor are not only the only male Electro Vision holders with similar movesets, long pale hair, red eyes, canine associations, wear clothing that leaves their torso exposed, but both also know Lisa through a mentor-student relationship, though in Cyno's case he studied with her under the same teacher during during their Akademiya years, while Razor was her student.
  • Mundane Utility: For those without Zhongli, Razor's charged Elemental Skill also destroys all ore nodes in his vicinity.
  • Mysterious Past: The "Of Ballads and Brews" event reveals that he had loving parents that were eagerly anticipating his birth and had also prepared a box of items that they had entrusted to Varka for safekeeping until he was ready, but the events that led to their disappearance and him being Raised by Wolves is unknown.
  • Never Learned to Read: The "Midsummer Island Adventure" event reveals that Razor also received a letter from the Dodo-King, but Kaeya informs the group that Razor couldn't read it. Thankfully a cat-eared civilian relayed the message for him.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his savage appearance, Razor is a kind boy who cares deeply for his wolf family and friends, and many characters that know him better talk positively of him.
  • Noble Wolf: His Animal Motif. Razor is kindhearted and heroic, and while he fights savagely like a wolf, it's to protect those he cares about.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: Downplayed; his outfit is technically this, as what looks like his "shirt" is actually a small poncho that only covers the upper part of his torso.
  • Odd Friendship:
    • Seems to at least be acquainted with Klee, though for his part he would really prefer it if she did not try to help him with hunting. In one of his lines he admits while he likes her, he also finds her a bit exhausting to be around.
    • As of the "Of Ballads and Brews" event, seems to have formed one with Bennett as well. In one of his lines they apparently even eat out together and notes that Bennett talks a lot.
  • The One Guy: Until Cyno's introduction in v3.1, Razor was the only male Electro unit (excluding Aether) in the entire game.
  • One-Note Cook: Gifting him the Cottage Kitchen set in the Serenitea Pot has him reveal he can't prepare anything other than Hash Browns, but he's ready to learn more human cuisine to fit in better.
  • The Quiet One: Razor doesn't often speak much, mainly because it tires him out.
  • Raised by Wolves: Though his origins of birth are unknown, for as long as he can remember, Razor has lived amongst a wolf pack. He calls them "lupical" (which in-universe means "wolf family").
(More About Razor: III) "'Lupical' means 'wolf home'— no, 'Lupical' means 'wolf family'. My Lupical lives in the woods. They say I am their Lupical."
  • Red Baron: Razor is known in the rumors as the "Wolf Boy".
  • Reduced Mana Cost: Played with. His utility passive, Wolvensprint shaves 25% off of Stamina consumption while sprinting.
  • Situational Damage Attack: In a variant, his second Constellation upgrade, Suppression, increases his Critical Rate by 10% against enemies with less than 30% HP.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Among Razor's Character Ascension Materials are wolfhooks, spiny fruits exclusively found on his native Wolvendom.
  • Spell Blade: His sixth Constellation upgrade, Lupus Fulguris, will charge up his claymore with Electro every ten seconds; his next normal attack will deal additional Electro damage equivalent to Razor's Attack stat, and if he isn't currently using his Burst, it will grant him an Electro Sigil.
  • Spin Attack: His Charged Attack has him swing his claymore and spin around in circles at high speed. This is disabled while the Wolf Within is active.
  • Status Buff: His first Constellation upgrade, Wolf's Instinct, increases his damage output by 10% for eight seconds whenever he picks up Elemental Particles or Orbs.
  • Super Mode: Not only does his Burst grant new moves through a spectral wolf, but it also increases his attack speed and Electro resistance, as well as makes him immune to being Electro-charged and increases his interruption resistance.
  • Super-Senses: His keen senses allow him to smell a scent from miles away.
  • Terse Talker: His sentences tend to be only three or four words long. As a Wild Child, his grasp on the common language is not that great.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meat, fitting for a Wild Child who was Raised by Wolves. He expresses his gusto for it in some of his voice-overs.
(Good Afternoon) "I had a big lunch! Lots of meat. Mmm, I'm happy!"
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: In the past, an Abyss Mage menaced him and his lupical during a stormy day. Fueled by his desire to protect and avenge them, he received an Electro Vision, with which he manhandled the Abyss Mage.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—his third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Soul Companion and Sharpened Claws, add three levels to, respectively, his Burst and Skill.
  • Weapon Specialization: For his Genius Invokation TCG card art, Razor is shown wielding an ascended Ferrous Shadow (3★). Notably, it makes him even tougher than he already is, with its Ascension substat being Max HP (7.7–35.2%), and whose "Unbending" passive increases the potency of charged attacks by 30–50% whenever his HP falls below 70–90%, as well as makes him harder to flinch.
  • What Is This Feeling?: During the "Of Ballads and Brews" event, when he and Bennett get locked in a room and are waiting for a rescue, Bennett decides to read his love poem out to Razor for critique. Razor doesn't quite understand what he's feeling beyond "warm and fuzzy," but he does enjoy Bennett's poem and even helps him finish it.
  • Wild Child: He has lived his life amongst wolves and away from humans. He can communicate in the human language, but his dialogue is notably stilted.
  • You No Take Candle: As a result of living in the wild with wolves for a long time and having extraordinarily little human interactions, Razor has difficulty speaking the human language coherently and speaks in simplified but stilted phrases. He notes this in his profile.
(about Razor's Troubles) "Talking makes me tired. Talking is... hard. But... I have to try."

    Alois

Alois

An alleged traveling merchant from Liyue who is in Mondstadt.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Should the Traveler assure him it's a Favonian way of hospitality, he becomes downright confused as to why would Noelle go through all the lengths into giving him gifts and meals and, out of guilt for Noelle's sincerity, confesses that he never had proper documents and is not a typical merchant either, and even tells her that some of his luggage might be a fake.
  • Nervous Wreck: He mistakes Noelle's certain phrasing ("...and your last") as a sign that his visit would be his final resting place. If the Traveler tells him that all of these is made "specifically for (him)", he completely loses it and mistakes the Traveler escorting him outside as a form of wanting to execute him by the backyard.
  • White-Collar Crime: His actual reason for being in Mondstadt. He wanted to research into the Dawn Winery in an attempt to imitate it (thus pass their work as his own) for profit. He notes that it's considered fraud.

Outside Mondstadt

    Karpillia

Karpillia

A Mondstadt Wine Businesswoman who couldn't compete with other Mondstadt's Wine Company such as Dawn Winery and Cat's Tail. She decided to move her winery to Inazuma instead.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite the Sakoku Decree being lifted in Raiden Shogun's 2nd Story Quest, the costly price of Dandelions sold by her, remains unchanged in-game.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoffinvoked: In-Universe. Her company used to be an individual alcohol and wine industry for Mondstadt, but moved to Inazuma when she realized that she couldn't compete with Dawn Winery. And to her surprise, her small company became a hit there and planned on continuing her franchise overseas.

    Liliane (Fontaine Spoilers!)

Liliane

A thief who traveled to Fontaine.
  • Accidental Murder: After her fight with Cowell, she stuffed him in the box that ends up getting crushed during Lyney's magic show, resulting in Cowell's death.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Remember that pickpocket Lyney tried to apprehend when the Traveler first entered Fontaine? She ended up being important later on down the Archon Quest when she got a Five-Finger Discount on a stage ticket to Lyney's magic show and the prospective trial which Lyney is accused of murder.
  • Mistaken Identity: Was thought to be the Fontainean painter Halsey when she got volunteered to partake in one of Lyney's magic tricks.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She is mortified over the death of Cowell, admitting that she had no intention of actually killing him.
  • No-Sell: Because she actually hailed from Mondstadt, Liliane is immune (or at least resistant) to the effects of the water from the Primordial Sea which has the averse effect of dissolving Fontainian locals into water.
  • Red Herring: "Halsey" is believed to be a victim of the serial kidnappings that have plagued Fontaine for years. Not only was that not the case, but she is the real (albeit accidental) murderer of Lyney's assistant Cowell, who might be connected to the disappearances.
  • Spanner in the Works: Became this when she stole the magic show ticket of a Fontainian woman. She got selected as the next disappearance victim, but since she was actually from Mondstadt, the Primordial Sea water couldn't dissolve her. Because the water didn't dissolve her, she was able to fight back and accidentally kill Cowell, her testimony clearing Lyney's false allegations and bringing the secrets of the primordial sea water to light.
  • Sticky Fingers: Liliane is a thief by trade and makes a living pickpocketing from more wealthy people in Fontaine.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Cowell, an older man, finds out the hard way that this seemingly dainty young woman is stronger than she looks, easily overpowering and knocking him out.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: As Fontaine uses exile as its chief form of sentence, it'd be reasonable to think she was deported back to Mondstadt but barring that, it's strange she isn't seen again when the Traveler infiltrates the Fortress of Meropide.

Historical

Present-day Mondstadt and its Archon Barbatos value freedom dearly to the point of not having an official government unlike the other nations due to its long history of oppression from previous rulers. As such, many of Mondstadt's prominent historical figures are often either the oppressors, or the rebels that rose up to challenge the status quo and cast off the shackles of the people.

    "Nameless Bard"

The Bard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/genshin_nameless_bard2.PNG

An unnamed young bard who once lived in Old Mondstadt under Decarabian's rule. Like many other people back then, he viewed the old ruler and the storm barriers he put as a sign of oppression; he also befriended the wind spirit that would eventually became Barbatos. He would eventually lead a rebellion alongside his companions and Barbatos, and then come out victorious, but he lost his life in the process.

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Venti describes him as "a boy, not that old", and his appereance when he died implies he might not have been older than an older teenager. At that age he was already rallying people and leading a revolt against a god.
  • Inspirational Martyr: During his life he dreamt of freedom and fought to achieve it, but died just before being able to see the clear blue sky and flying birds he always wanted. Venti would then live by his philosophy and turn it into the cornerstone of the entire nation of Mondstadt. In a way, Mondstadt wouldn't be the same without him.
  • Last Request: His dying wish was that the tiny wind sprite he befriended would live freely in the world on his stead.

like a bird in the sky.
See the world in my behalf,
to the heavens may you fly.

  • Hero with Bad Publicity: He was called an Outlander by the people of Sal Vindagnyr.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Imunlaukr's name likely originates from an Old Norse stanza by Norwegian skald Eyvindr Finnsson skáldaspillir, in which he used ímun-laukr, literally "war-leek," as a kenning for a sword. The same stanza, in turn, uses Ullr ímunlauks ("Ullr of the sword") as a kenning for a warrior, which matches his description.

    Ukko

Ukko

The Scribe of Sal Vindagnyr.
  • Ambiguous Situation: There is a Frostarm Lawachurl named Ukko. While the hilichurls are technically once people of Khaenri'ah, there is a possible explanation that Ukko might be the same person cursed by Celestia into becoming a Lawachurl.

  • Condemned Contestant: After their failed uprising, the Dawnlight Swordswoman became a gladiator who fought till her death for the nobles.
  • Inspirational Martyr: Dawnlight Swordswoman, after becoming a gladiator, once befriended Ragnvindr Knight, then a squire under one of Mondstadt's noble families. After her death, he became one of the key players of the uprising that followed Vennessa's, and he took the title "Dawn Knight" after Dawnlight's own.
  • Instrument of Murder: Their instruments also double as weapons: The Flute sword for "Dawnlight Swordswoman", The Bell claymore for Kreuzlied, The Widsith catalyst for the "Conductor", and The Stringless bow for the "Sojourner". Their battles tend to be called "performances" by the lore.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Kreuzlied was part of Mondstadt's Lawrence Clan, but he chose to side with the troupe. Even after the disbandment of the group, he would eventually form a secret organization that became part of a larger uprising following Vennessa's rise against the aristocrats.
  • No Name Given: Aside from Kreuzlied, none of them had their names mentioned; they're only called by their titles.
