Characters / Fairy Without Wings Phoenix Grave

Go To

These characters belong to the guild Phoenix Grave. Little is known about them other than the fact that the guild exists in canon and is home to the brother of Sabertooth's Minerva Orlando. They acted as a Warm-Up Boss for the bigger contenders of the Grand Magic Games of X788. As for the Grand Magic Games of X791, they are described as the dark horse by Alice.

    In General
  • Warm-Up Boss: All three of the major preliminary battles in the X788 Grand Magic Games include the five members of this guild and while none of them win sans Pyrrha though she's subsequently defeated in turn by Jellal, it's clear that they are not pushovers.
    • Wake-Up Call Boss: Alice in her first fight as she defeats Sindel on the first day of the Grand Magic Games.
  • The Worf Effect: With the exception of Pyrrha, none of the members of Phoenix Grave actually defeat anyone in the X788 Grand Magic Games if you don't count Heidy and Clarice taking down some fodder offscreen.
    • Inverted when Alice defeats Sindel.

    Alice Amakusa
Pyrrha's mother. She has long dark hair and yellow eyes. Her origins are shrouded in mystery as is her magic. She supposedly helped Archer find the lost magic Skeleton Key and met him after he left Phoenix Grave over twenty years ago on a journey. She is also confirmed to be a first generation dragon slayer. Oh and she apparently knows Igneel and is a Storm Dragon Slayer.
  • Bad Liar: Describes herself as one so she often speaks cryptically to avoid having to say the truth.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting her little girl Pyrrha, as Jellal, Ultear and Ember found out.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Towards an infant Natsu when she first met him.
  • Blow You Away: Alice can summon powerful gusts of wind and create whole hurricanes as wind comprises part of her Storm Dragon Slayer magic.
  • Creepy Good: As revealed by chapters 180 and 182, Alice isn't a bad girl, she just acts that way.
  • Dark Is Evil: Let's see, black hair? Check. Wears predominately dark colors? Check. Alice just reeks of standard villain cliche.
  • Evil Laugh: The narration describes it as a signature sinister chuckle.
  • The Gadfly: Provokes both Kagura by calling her a bunny rabbit, and God Serena by calling him by his real first name: Francis.
  • Good All Along: Alice spends the entirety of the Grand Magic Games arc being built up as this creepy, evil villain. Then chapter 182 took a humongous sledgehammer to that premise.
  • An Ice Person: Alice can use ice magic and it's one of the elements that comprise Her storm dragon slayer magic.
  • Implacable Woman: Her battle against Fighting Spirit solidifies her as one of these. Her fights against Ushiora and Atarella solidify it even more.
  • I'm Taking Him Home with Me!: See Big Sister Instinct above.
    • She also has this reaction to Nunnally in chapter 198.
  • I Shall Taunt You: She deliberately presses Natsu's buttons at the start of their fight, knowing that unless she does so he won't stand a chance against her.
  • Lady of Black Magic: While she is a bit...quirky, she fits all the criteria.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Alice is Natsu and Nippy's older sister.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Using Dragon Force is apparently a dilemma for her so when she busts it out, it means she's all out of fucks to give. During the Naval Battle of the Grand Magic Games, she shows just how dangerous she really is, briefly.
  • Mama Bear: She was ready to kill Ember (a big no-no in the Fairy Tail universe) for trying to kill Pyrrha. Say what you will about Alice, she loves her daughter very much. She even dropped the quirky behavior and just went to town.
  • Making a Splash: Hydro Cannon is her most notable water spell, but she can also eat water for a power boost as it's a component of her Storm Dragon Slayer magic.
  • Mysterious Past: So mysterious, she doesn't even feel comfortable sharing it with her own husband.
    • The Reveal: Alice is the daughter of Ororo, the Queen of the Storm Dragons. Ororo is Nippy's biological mother of which Igneel is the father. This means Alice is Natsu's older sister and was actually instrumental in raising Natsu when he was a baby. She even named him.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: She didn't take kindly to Ember trying to kill Pyrrha. See Mama Bear above.
  • Obviously Evil: Most fans can agree that whatever Alice is, she's bad news.
  • Promoted to Parent: While Alice is by and large Natsu's older sister given the relations of their adoptive dragon parents, she had to spend his first few years of life doing all of the mother-like things for him since Igneel and Ororo were so large and powerful they would've crushed Natsu like a very tiny grape. Fortunately, unlike most examples, Alice didn't seem to mind.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Present whenever she uses geass magic.
  • Red Herring: Geass Magic, wears lots of black, super creepy, seems to be plotting something, clearly Morrigan ley Feir, right? Nope. Turns out she couldn't really be more of a different character.
  • Shock and Awe: It is confirmed that Alice can use lightning magic given that a technique Archer used called Sage's Thunderbolt is said to have been hers via his Power Copying. She also electrocutes Juvia during the preliminaries. It's also one of the elements of Her Storm Dragon Slayer magic.
  • Stealth Mentor: A possible interpretation of her fight with Natsu, given her intentions for him.
  • Super Power Lottery: Storm Dragon Slayer magic comprises ice, wind, water and lightning all together in one element, plus she can summon her own storms so that she can always gain home field advantage. This woman is never without a weapon.
  • Walking Spoiler: Alice is nothing like how she is initially presented.
  • Weather Manipulation: She can cause storm clouds to roll in and can control the intensity of the storm that follows.

    Archer Amakusa
Pyrrha's father and the current guild master of Phoenix Grave. He wields the lost magic Skeleton Key, which functions as its namesake and lets him copy any magic of any mage he makes contact with—or makes contact with him—for up to an hour at a time. If he is in consistent contact with someone, he can permanently gain their magic, like with his wife, Alice. He can also use the magic as easily as the owner he copied it from. Of course, he can only copy caster magic, since holder magic would require him to use the actual object in question for the magic to work.

He has dark skin and white hair. As guild master he also plans to expand Phoenix Grave and make them one of the most powerful guilds in Fiore by acquiring smaller guilds and putting them on payroll. After the Guild War he becomes Wizard Saint number two after the retirement of Warrod and Wolfheim.

  • Ambition Is Evil: Averted. He isn't evil, but his ambition and ambiguous motives make people believe he is.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: How he became the second guild master of Phoenix Grave.
  • Audience Surrogate: He basically tells Suzaku what everyone, both in and out-of-universe has been thinking about the Guild War; that he should follow his gut and do the right thing instead of just hoping to find evidence against V.V.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Archer is originally mentioned by Ultear during the Rise to Power arc in chapter 117 and makes his first full appearance in chapter 151.
  • Cooldown Hug: He gives a very needed one to Tianzi after he realized she had killed the eunuchs and he saved the rest of Howling Wolf Just in Time.
  • Klingon Promotion: In his first appearance he challenges Isamu to a fight and asks if Isamu will wager the title of guild master. After beating Isamu down, Archer becomes guild master of Phoenix Grave.
  • Papa Wolf: He gives a resurrected Ember the same mercy Alice gave to her for nearly killing Pyrrha. None
  • Power Copying: What Skeleton Key lets him do.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's quite understanding of Alysha's predicament regarding the council's brainwashing.
  • Super Power Lottery: Skeleton Key is a rather broken magic, let's all agree.
  • Team Dad: He may not be as personable as other Guild Masters but he deeply cares about the members of his guild.

    Clarice Helena Diana Spay
A former member of Sabertooth that was kicked out for daring to stand up to Jiemma and his Social Darwinism. Her magic lets her make clones of herself made out of shadow. She is supposed to be a direct inspiration of Blake Belladona. A member of Team Hecate

    Heidy Marie Janice Orenstein III
A white haired uppity user of what appears to be magic glyphs. By Word of God she's based off of Weiss Schnee. A member of Team Hecate

    Legretta Viola Lionelle Upton
A busty blonde with monstrous physical strength. She is a member of Team Hecate and Wanda's older sister. She uses Berserk Enhancement Magic.
  • Berserk Button: She didn't take kindly to Audrey traumatizing Wanda by killing people right in front of her, or poisoning Clarice.
    • If the Guild War arc is any indicator, she doesn't like people hurting her teammates.
  • Birds of a Feather: She and Tamara bond over this.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She laid a smack down on Audrey who is confirmed to be S-class by Sabertooth's standards.
    • Happens again in the Guild War arc where she does this to Laki, Levy, Cana and Bisca one right after the other. It crosses over into No-Holds-Barred Beatdown given the absolute brutal fashion by which she punches out the four of them.
  • Determinator: During the Guild War not only she knocks out Laki, Levy, Cana and Bisca in short order, she refuses to yield while fighting Gajeel, and keeps fighting until she runs out of magic.
  • Died Standing Up: While she doesn't really die, after being defeated by Gajeel, she loses consciousness while standing up.
  • How Much More Can She Take: Gajeel wonders this when she keeps going at it against him in spite of her mounting injuries.
  • Most Common Superpower: Considering who she's based on...
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: To one of the members of the Black Basilisk Fang:
Legretta: Okay, Mama Bear, you're a little too conscious for my tastes. Let's fix that.
  • Punny Name: According to author notes, her initials are a pun on "LVL Up" (Level Up)
  • Smarter Than You Look: She maybe punch-happy and reckless, but her proposal to Tamara of pretending to capture Mermaid Heel and go after VV from behind is surprisingly well thought.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": She's ecstatic when she meets Chandra.

    Isamu Kurusu
The former guild master of Phoenix Grave. He is the mentor of Team Hecate, Pyrrha, Mace and even Archer.

    Jin Tobias
A rather stoic young gentleman that joins Phoenix Grave at the start of the Cracked Gemstone arc.

    Mace Orlando
The younger brother of Minerva Orlando. High ranking in the list of mages you want as your boyfriend. His trademark magic is Trace: The Lancer.
  • Honor Before Reason: He could've taken the statue that would've let his team compete in the games, ran around Kagura and hoped for the best, but he decided to fight her fair and square and the winner would get the statue.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Not only he was completely incapable of saving his mother when he was a child, he was too far away to prevent the death of his sister at the hands of their father.
  • Nice Guy: He's rather chivalrous (which is the reason why his father expelled him) and is quite caring towards both his sister and the younger members of Phoenix Grave.
  • Non-Indicative Name: His name is Mace so of course his magic has him using lances.
  • Sole Survivor: With Minerva and Jiemma's deaths, he has become the last member of his family.

    Nancy Odin Raflessia Abaddon
An eccentric young mage with really powerful lightning magic. She joins Phoenix Grave at the start of the Cracked Gemstone arc.

    Pyrrha Amakusa
A redheaded mage that uses a spear, a shield and has two types of magic. The first is called Magic Polarity Manipulation which lets her manipulate any projectile or physical object and adjust its magnetic polarity in comparison to her body or another object. She also has electromagnetic magic, which functions purely as Shock and Awe and has less to do with magnets in general. This form just makes her seem like a watered down Magneto. She also is an obvious Expy of Pyrrha Nikos.
  • The Ace: Possibly considering she's the only one to beat anyone during the preliminaries of the X788 Grand Magic Games Ultear and Meredy at that too.
  • Child Prodigy: Pyrrha is 14 when she fights Ultear and Meredy and she kicks their asses.
  • Combat Pragmatist: When Ultear tries to explain Pyrrha's abilities to Meredy, Pyrrha tries to run for it since she has the statue necessary to help her guild pass the preliminaries rather than listen to her explanation and face her head on. Ultear has to actually seal off Pyrrha's escape in order for Pyrrha to actually out and out fight her.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: She carries a spartan shield in her non-dominant hand. Ember utterly destroys it.
    • Shield Bash: And it proves rather effective against Ultear, Meredy and a bunch of fodder. Although not so much against Ember.
  • Shock and Awe: When she's not manipulating the polarity of things, she's dishing out some serious electrical pain.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Clearly.
  • Taking the Bullet: She blocks an attack from Cain Bloodstone meant for Skyler. While the attack would've killed Skyler, Pyrrha only loses her shield and gets a nasty gash in her arm and a graze along her rib cage.
  • Transforming Weapon: Just like Nikos, her spear can also become a rifle.

    Skyler Fateburn
A young man with heterochromia who seems to have control over the four basic elements and carries a Cool Sword. His last name is currently unknown. He is first introduced in X788 at the age of 20 and is shorter than Eve Tearm, despite the two being the same age.

He is the son of Alysha and Travis Fateburn.

  • Blow You Away: Skyler is fast like the wind and supposedly the wind can tell him things.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Attacks Jenny mid-invocation of her takeover magic to prevent her from using her most powerful form.
  • Cool Sword: He carries a Sinister Scimitar that has blue runes going up and down the blade. It is called The Fang of the Dragon King and supposedly made from Acnologia's very scales.
  • Elemental Powers: he has the ability to use fire, water, earth and wind, especially wind, as part of his swordsmanship prowess.
  • Generation Xerox: Skyler doesn't just look like the spitting image of his father minus the heterochromia and skunk stripe, but he also has taken up his father's legacy of trying to bring co-existence between demons and humans.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Subverted in the most bizarre manner. Alysha, as a lamia, can manipulate the DNA of the fetuses growing inside her, allowing Skyler to be born completely human.
  • Kill It with Fire: Vaporizing Rebellion Sword, which is a series of rapid slashes in conjunction with a flame coated blade.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: How he reveals to Jellal they are brothers.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He's shorter than Eve Tearm and he's able to go toe to toe with Jenny who is The Rival to Mirajane.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: And he wears it like the page provider, Strider Hiryu. Bonus points for also carrying around a cool sword and also being The Quiet One.
  • The Stoic: While he is surprised just like his teammates to learn that Minerva and Mace are brother and sister, he doesn't react to it the same way the others do.
    • Not So Stoic: After reuniting with his mother Skyler seems to have gone through a complete personality change as he's able to trash talk right back to Minerva after their fight was interrupted.
  • Shared Family Quirks: He certainly inherited his mother's habit of using Visible Silence.
  • The Quiet One: Except when he has a case of calling his attacks.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In his first appearance he had trouble fighting on par with Jenny. Currently his speed is enough to impress Pyrrha, whose defeat came at the hands of someone as fast as Jellal.
  • Visible Silence: Often his response to conversation.

    Wanda Scarlet Johansen Bella Rose
A peppy girl that founded Phoenix Grave's Team Hecate, of which Heidy, Clarice and her older sister Legretta are apart of. She uses slash magic, which has her swinging her arms out and creating waves of energy that cut whatever they hit.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: What she does to Smilodon with her technique Rose Garden.
  • Genki Girl: So, so much.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one when Audrey kills her own guild members. It's the first time Wanda's ever seen a dead body so she naturally freaks out. Legretta helps her pull herself together.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: While Wanda is an A-class mage, she really really wants to be S-class or at least strong enough to be on Team Phoenix Grave during the Grand Magic Games. She is visibly disappointed when her mission to take out the dark guild Smilodon winds up becoming S-class forcing her to team up with her whole team.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": She is a big fangirl of Kagura's.
  • Underestimating Badassery: She believed she could take down Zero on her own. Not only Lelouch easily defeats her, the only reason she's alive is because Lelouch didn't wanted to kill her.
