Ambiguous Name: Man On Fire

Go To

To-do list:

  • The trope has been expanded to cover both horror-focused examples about a human body being set on fire being portrayed as more primal and visceral than an inanimate object being set on fire and comedy-focused examples about the idea of a frantic man running around while on fire being Played for Laughs. Remove wicks and on-page examples that don't fit the revised definition and leave ones that still fit. Keep track of wick cleanup using Sandbox.Man On Fire Wick Cleaning; note that Woman on Fire wicks are only allowed on Characters/ pages.

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by Matthew L Mayfield.

Man on Fire, according to the page description and laconic, seems to be about how easy people catch on fire. Basically, it is to people like how Made of Incendium is to objects. And interestingly enough, the former is much more older than the latter trope. But it seems like whenever I see this trope mentioned, it's usually just used for people who simply get set on fire or are on fire, which is pretty much chairs on fire. Or perhaps the most common use for it is people who die fiery deaths, with some of them falling under Kill It with Fire. Occasionally it might even be used for someone who's Wreathed in Flames. And like any trope, it too has its share of examples with little to no context. I think the problem with the trope is its name. It has the name that can be used for a variety of meanings; not really illustrating what the trope really is about. And it seems the main trope page itself barely mentions the purpose of the trope, which doesn't help too much either. I got my wick check and looking at 50 wicks out of 2416, it just pretty much shows exactly what I'm talking about:

  • Correctly used: 3/50
  • People being on fire/people being set on fire: 14/50
  • People dying fiery deaths/Kill It With Fire: 17/50
  • ZCE/Insufficient Contect: 7/50
  • Murky/Other: 9/50

As you can see here, I could barely find anything that fits the definition of the trope. It's pretty much dominated by people being set or killed by fire. I have a couple ideas on what to do with this:
  1. Merge the trope into Made of Incendium. Expand that to where it's people who could easily catch on fire and burn wildly, not just objects.
  2. Turn the Man on Fire page itself into a disambiguation page for other tropes such as Kill It with Fire, Wreathed in Flames, Made of Incendium, Spontaneous Human Combustion, Infernal Retaliation, Playing with Fire, Incendiary Exponent, and of course, the Man on Fire movie.

Then Korgoth throws a glass of alcohol all over him, cuing another series of screams. Then he sets the alcohol ablaze; no reaction shots this time, the guy just runs around screaming for a bit then falls over dead. Just another boring bar-fight for Korgoth.

again, i'm asking what an example would look like in practice that would be distinct from the tropes we currently have. what does "person on fire is horrific" look like in practice that is not covered by existing tropes and would warrant us creating a distinct trope?

If you think it would overlap too much with other tropes, the burden of proof is on you to point out which tropes it would overlap with. I fail to see anything ambiguous about Synchronicity's proposed (re)definition that would cause any problems with comparing it with other fire-related tropes.

[up]I have said which tropes it would overlap with, that's why I'm asking. My question is coming from the fact that we are suggesting a Super-Trope, but if the Super-Trope is just the same as the subtropes and doesn't cover anything unique in its own right, I'm not sure why we'd have it, especially given the several tropes that both cover the concept while also being more specific in how it's presented.

ETA: My concern is essentially that though there might be a difference in theory (you could group these tropes with the idea of "being set on fire is horrific"), there isn't one in practice / that top level grouping isn't in of itself tropeworthy.

Well, the basic concept is "someone burning alive is a horrific, visceral, and visually impactful way to kill or harm a character". That concept isn't fully covered by the subtropes, because none of them just touch on the basic idea, they all throw in some extra requirements like suicide or spontaneous combustion. I don't see how the supertrope would be redundant because there's untapped potential to explore that we're not yet exploring.

I disagree that there's not a difference in practice because none of these tropes are actually about the horror of it, they're just various ways to kill someone with fire, the actual idea we're discussing would be in tandem with those things, but is not the same as those things.

[up]Then this might just be a fundamental difference in opinion and I'll step aside because "someone burning alive is a horrific, visceral, and visually impactful way to kill or harm a character" sounds more like a possible justification than a trope in its own right. The same "visceral, horrific, and visual impactful" comments can be said for skull crushing (Head Crushing, Your Head A-Splode), being flayed alive (Flaying Alive), being disemboweled (Gutted Like a Fish), and a whole slew of death/being killed tropes, yet this higher level trope concept doesn't exist for those.

There's something to be said for a trope (or index) that's broadly about showy, highly visual ways to die used for impact, but I don't think it should/need be fire specific. I'll leave it at that, though

Been thinking about things. And I think I'm leaning towards a rename and making the Man on Fire page itself a disambiguation page. I favor the rename because let's say it does get extended to the definition of someone being burnt quite horrifically and have that being emphasized. I do think there's something here to work with. I think it can be a trope on its own. There is potential in that idea.

But my main thing is if Man on Fire is extended to that definition, I still think it'd run into the same peoples it had before. Like just potholing or just saying that a man is on fire without any emphasis on the agony the person is going through. The Man on Fire name itself isn't really indicative of that idea. I think it'd still be used as just anyone being set on fire. That is something I had found whenever I see that trope used and seen that quite a bit on the wick check I did for it.

I think a rename with an emphasis on the agony of burning and having that be a death trope as well may not be that bad of an idea. I know there are concerns that it'd be a lot of work; a lot of wicks to be cleaned. But the total wicks are under 2'500. So yeah, it'd be a bit of work, but I don't think it's that bad of a number and can be cleaned out fairly quickly with effort.

Along with the discussion of this being horrific, I just thought of this trope Played for Laughs, as the page image shows it's very possible, and by remembering some cases already listed on the page - Be Cool, Lock Stock, Smells Like Nirvana - and one that's not from Metallica, wonder if a "Sudden Burning Man" is a rare occurrence or could be counted as something to consider. It's like GastonRabbit said, a man covered in flames just happened to appear, not necessarily overlapping with any tropes that involve weaponizing fire. (at most it enters Incendiary Exponent)

I was thinking about that too. The idea of a frantic man running around while on fire definitely seems like something that could be played for laughs.

Maybe we could split this trope between examples being played for laughs, and others for being played for horror?

I hooked a crowner with the two suggestions in the opening posts, one option for Synchronicity's proposed expansion, one option for splitting between that definition and a Played for Laughs counterpart, and a second expansion option for using one trope for what the split would cover.

Has it been addressed as to whether or not this trope should probably be disambiguated for examples of creatures in fiction who are very literally perpetually on fire because that's how they function; examples such as Meramon, Heatblast, Human Torch, numerous Zelda enemies who are always on fire as a variation...
