YMMV / The Autobiography of Jane Eyre

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In episode 13, injured Mr Rochester says to Jane who wants to treat his wound that they should go back to bed. He definitely meant that each should go to their respective bed, but some comments sniggered at this innuendo and it was hinted that gee, he should buy her a drink first.
  • Adorkable:
    • Jane Eyre is kind of a cute girl. She has a plushy cat as her Companion Cube, she likes making stuff from post-it notes, she bowls with an orange and empty coke bottles, and she wears dorky hats, one of which is an owl.
    • Simon-James Rivers is a medical graduate. A little awkward, a little uptight, and not always the most observant of people, but charming nonetheless.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Adele Rochester has it tough. Book purists among the viewers are disappointed with swapping a normal kid with a precocious prodigy, but some viewers welcome the changes in her character. Book Adele was a spoilt sweet girl, constantly bashed for being vapid (read: bashed for being French). In the web series, her intelligence is a good justification for having a personal tutor in the modern day Canada, and it might bring more layers in Adele's character. However, Jane's trying to form Adele into a worthy person was an important arc in the story and might be lost in this re-imagination. Moreover, some viewers feel that Adele's schedule is unrealistic and would exhaust her in no time. Rule of Funny doesn't quite work in the situation, and Jane's praising her constantly and never even mentioning at least some problems got a bit annoying. However, Adele's actress is considered very talented and natural in her portrayal.
  • Crazy Is Cool: Though not crazy, Jane is definitely (though inconspicuously) neurotic, and it makes her more adorable, funnier, and more open-minded.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Susanna Maria Ramirez Gonzalez is, as a maid, only a minor character but she's a definite fan-favourite. People always ask for more no-nonsense and realistic Susanna who has healthy attitude to the whole situation. She's also absolutely hilarious.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: There's significant support for Simon/Jane, despite Jane stating she doesn't feel that way about him and the Foregone Conclusion that she will go back to Rochester.
  • Growing the Beard:
    • Dramatic tension appeared as soon as episode 3 "Mistake", covering the drama of Jane's lost mobile phone and her fear that she's in the wrong place. Some viewers compared it to the excellent "red room" episode from the book when small Jane freaked out because she was locked in a room where her uncle died and she thought she saw his ghost. It also bore strong affinities with the scene when Jane was waiting for people from Thornfield to pick her up, but they were belated and she felt uneasy. However, later episodes were less Gothic and less scary.
    • The (un)appearance of Mr Rochester significantly boosted viewers' interest. Episode 8 started as if Jane might meet him on her walk, but it ended up showing Jane speaking about her late friend Helen, which was welcomed by fans as well. Mr Rochester showed up in episode 10, but his face was revealed in episode 13. It was an adaptation of "fire scene" from the book, re-imagined as glass crash. The atmosphere of the video was very spooky and gloomy, and fans loved it — both Mr Rochester's reveal and the mood of the whole video.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Several commentators described Jane's white suitcase shining from the dark background in episode 13 as particularly unnerving and really creepy, because it reminded them of a smiley face. Its handle looks like smiling lips and two dark dots served for its eyes, forming weird and constantly smiling Uncanny Valley face.
  • The Woobie: Jane, poor lamb. Her life has been extremely difficult, without family and losing her only close friend. Sometimes she's so down and depressed that it's painful to watch it and she always beats herself up for being whiny when she lets her emotions out.
