YMMV / Schmigadoon!

Go To

  • Award Snub: Unlike the first season's Emmy-winning "Corn Puddin'", none of the Schmicago songs received nominations, even though the likes of "Talk to Daddy" and "Over and Done" might provide the best songs across both seasons.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
  • Fandom-Specific Plot: No third season means fans will have to imagine for themselves what adventures the offspring of Josh and Melissa would've had in a town inspired by musicals newer than those that influenced Schmicago.
  • Growing the Beard: Many critics prefer Season 2 over the first; for reasons ranging from the wider variety of musicals spoofed, to the more romantic depiction of the main couple.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Jane Krakowski as the Countess. She shows up for one and a half scenes to do a bombastic musical number while Driving a Desk, pulls a gun on Melissa, and exits the story. Despite this, her solo was lauded as one of the best things of the fifth episode, and Krakowski landed a more plot-relevant role the following season.
  • Questionable Casting: Kristin Chenoweth, one of the largest hams in musical theatre, is cast way against type as Mildred Layton, who's grandiose in her own way, but quite reserved. It's been said that letting Chenoweth play a more openly hammy role would've made her solo better, as the clear takeoff of "Ya Got Trouble" doesn't quite work when the character's otherwise presented as a total stiff, and even acts that way for a good portion of the song where she's supposed to be rousing up the entire town. This was averted in season 2, where she absolutely hams it up as the Lovett-esque Ms. Codwell.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Not that the other numbers aren't parodies, but "Va-Gi-Na" is by far the most blatant, as it uses pretty much exactly the same music as "Do-Re-Mi" but just substitutes the lyrics for raunchier ones. Given it's a very short song, it's likely that a more direct parody was deemed acceptable as opposed to the larger more elaborate numbers.
