YMMV / P.N.03

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Composed by Resident Evil and Mega Man composers Shusaku Uchiyama and Makoto Tomozawa, the game's German-inspired electronic/techno soundtrack has been praised by many people, and has been compared to the iconic German electronic group Tangerine Dream. The game also supports Surround sound.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The game is famous for the Male Gaze on Vanessa's backside and her shaking it. Many players have reported being distracted by it during gameplay.
  • Critical Dissonance: The general public views the game much more favorably than many critics, with P.N.03 having an 8.9 user score compared to its 63 metacritic score. Critics were also divided, because there were several positive to mediocre reviews (Famitsu scored the game a 7/10 and said they hoped to see a sequel, and Play Magazine gave it an A-) but many of the most well-known publications such as IGN and Gamespot panned the game. Many critics consider it a Cult Classic today. Overall, P.N.03 is somewhat of a love-or-hate game.
  • Cult Classic: Many reviewers today consider P.N.03 a cult game that was misunderstood by many critics at its release, and deserves a sequel or a re-release. Some contemporary reviews in 2003 also noted the game would have niche or cult appeal, being a Nintendo Hard Shoot 'Em Up.
  • Game-Breaker: The "Tengu" energy drive temporarily makes Vanessa invincible and increases the power of her palm shot. The ability to ignore an enemy's attacks and just fire away can make some rooms or bosses trivially easy.
    • Two Tengu Pro stringed back to back is enough to destroy the final boss on Normal with a fully upgraded Palm Shot.
  • Goddamned Bats: "Eichel" robots are basically robot bats that are weak and easy to destroy, but the score and combo time gained from destroying them is low, and they often distract from bigger, more dangerous but more rewarding robots nearby.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: Along with the polarizing controls, this was also a common critique of the game, since the game can be beaten in a few hours and speedran in less than one, although defenders say that this is typical of a Shoot 'Em Up and that the game is meant to be replayed repeatedly and mastered.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Despite looking to many observers like a 3D action game like Devil May Cry with free 360 movement and action, the game is really a 3rd person Shoot 'Em Up with Resident Evil tank controls, which also means the player cannot run and shoot simultaneously. These controls were the biggest polarizing part of the game, with negative reviewers criticizing the controls as stiff, but positive critics and fans arguing that P.N.03 is "misunderstood" because of approaching the game like a 3D action game. Ironically, the same controls were lauded in Resident Evil 4. The strict segregation of movement and attacking define the way the game plays.
    • This only applies to the control stick, not the dodge buttons.
  • That One Boss: The end boss, especially at first. Also invokes Difficulty Spike, as the frequency and amount of attacks being directed at the player is far beyond anything encountered before.
