YMMV / HFIL

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation
    • Cell: Is he genuinely trying to reform so he can escape HFIL? Or does he plan on enjoying his new afterlife with no intents on getting out. And if the latter, why not? Is he too proud to change or is he simply unwilling to lie?
    • King Cold: Is he truly reformed or is he just faking it? If the latter, does he genuinely feel bad for the others being stuck in HFIL or is he just planning on using them to escape or take over? In Episode 7 he seems genuinely upset at how hands-free Mez and Goz are with the MCMs rehabilitation exercises (and the utter lack of change in Freeza), but his tone at the end of the episode implies a more malevolent interpretation, but it's too soon to tell everything going on in his mind.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Unlike most residents of HFIL Bojack is by far the least bothered about being there despite dying after being released of a 1000 year imprisonment and seems to enjoy every and any company.
  • Fanfic Fuel: The whole series is ripe for this. How was HFIL when it had other members like Nappa and Cui? How much was the place shaken up by Freeza and King Cold's arrival? How would it be if it had villains from other time periods in the series? What would it be like after the likes of Babidi and Buu went there?
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Why does Frog Ginyu constantly assault Cell? Because Cell is a bug. This gets stated outright by the Ogres in Episode 6.
    • What is the end result of King Cold's long con of winning the management's trust and breaking everyone out of HFIL? An abridged version of the Other World Saga from Z.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: A show about a bunch of evil people in Hell undergoing a rehabilitation program run by demons to hopefully ascend to Heaven? This show managed to come out before Hazbin Hotel premiered (besides its pilot of course).
    • After TFS initially cancelled Bojack Unbound and the Buu Saga, the fact that Bojack showed up in this series and Buu Bits both ended up happening is pretty sweet for fans to see. TFS did end up adapting both things they had trouble with, in a small way.
  • Salvaged Story: Episode 10 manages to salvage one of DBZA's biggest cancellations, Bojack Unbound, as well as fix how Bojack was a generic and Flat Character in his original special, that it caused TFS a bunch of problems when adapting it. This Episode manages to fix that by Bojack unbounded from his special, where instead he gets to be an expressive, jolly space pirate (Talk Like a Pirate accent included) that wants to be the life of the dreary villainous party. Lani's hammy and jovial performance really adds to Bojack's character as well, leading him to become one of the series' Ensemble Dark Horses too. The special itself is also only alluded to briefly, in very little detail aside from the important events, such as Bojack being freed from King Kai's planet (even meeting Cell after he exploded), Gohan killing him, and how he got punched by Goku's ghost.
  • Tear Jerker: The Ginyu Force accidentally burns down Goz and Mez's house, and the ogres are just downtrodden that they lost all their otherworldly possessions (except for a copy of Caddyshack II).
  • Ugly Cute: The Christmas special has the whole episode be styled in the same way as the Rankin/Bass Productions cartoons, resulting in the monstrous villain characters being made into soft claymation chibis.
  • Unexpected Character: Twofold in Episode 9, introducing two characters that fans were taken aback by, introduced after The Stinger:
    • The first one is Freeza's older brother, Cooler. With King Cold calling it an "inter-HFIL" tournament, it opens the possibility for other possible movie villains to make an appearance.
    • The second one introduced in this episode is Bojack, complete with his Talk Like a Pirate gimmick! After TFS struggled to adapt his movie, fans were wondering if he would make it into the canon at all. This reveal allows for the space pirate to be included in the Abridged canon in a way that allows for more freedom than a straight abridgement. Episode 10 also reveals that the events of the special did happen, just off-screen, allowing for a loose retelling without needing to go too deep into the details and just focus on Bojack being in HFIL.
