YMMV / Food Fantasy

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • If White Truffle marries the Master Attendant, she starts showing her dorky side by peppering scientific terms in her love declarations.
"How do I feel about you? The sum of sine squared plus cosine squared."
    • Fried Chicken. A lot of his lines involve him being a Chuunibyou and wanting to look cool only to get embarrassed when he notices that the Master Attendant is here. And then if they make a pledge with him, he can say this line:
"Hmmmm, have you thought of ways to increase our intimacy? Aahh! No......oof, you......why did you sudden;y hug me?"
  • Awesome Music: The Sakurajima background music is a calming oriental Japanese piece that gives off a quiet but soothing feeling of walking down a field surrounded by Cherry blossom trees.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Spaghetti, in spades. While some fans adore him due to his surprisingly complex nature as a villain and interactions with other members of his squad, others completely despise him, seeing him as manipulative and abusive.
    • Chocolate for some (see Ensemble Dark Horse below), due to the amount of attention he gets both in-game and in the fandom compared to more interesting Food Souls.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome:
    • Players, especially newer ones, will often fall back to using Black Tea, Milk, and Tom Yum as their go-to food souls. All three of them have accessible ways to obtain shards to ascend them, making it easy make them 5* souls. They all have individual reasons for being mainstays, and many players will tell you to have a sufficiently powered up alternative to even consider replacing them.
    • Black Tea is the first SR given to you (albeit veiled behind the gacha summoning system), and has synergy with Milk, allowing her to utilize her Super Flower Blossoms skill right away for incredible AoE burst damage.
    • Milk, despite being an R, more often than not has a permanent slot in a team for being a powerful Support soul. She can grant regeneration with Super Milk Bottle, keeping the Defense soul healthy, and has a strong burst heal with Milk Shower. Since Black Tea is also one of your first food souls, she can immediately access Super Milk Shower for even stronger heals to top the party off at the tip of a hat.
    • Tom Yum is a Defense soul with a reliable skill kit even with an R rarity. His skills heal him back, taking some stress off the healers and making him much more durable in battle.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • The pot enemies as soon as you get to Spring Valley due to being much tougher to defeat than the previous defense enemies before and can create barriers for themselves. Amazake himself can be very tough due to his tendency to heal himself a lot.
    • Orange Juice in Spring Valley, since she can deal massive amounts of damage and always stays behind some Offensive/Defensive enemies.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Coffee and Chocolate are popular due to their charming and cool designs and personalities.
    • Tempura, Steak, Vodka and Foie Gras are also a group of popular characters, due to their personalities, designs and usefulness in battle.
    • Whiskey has garnered a lot of attention from the fanbase thanks to his intriguing design, sinister nature, and role in Pizza and Cassata's backstories.
  • Epileptic Trees: Due to how some of the Food Soul's fondness stories are connected to each other in one way or another, there are theories about how some of their interpersonal drama affected the world of Tierra, where Food Fantasy took place in.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • B-52: Bifty
    • Napoleon Cake: Napo
    • Crab Long Bao: CLB
    • Boston Lobster: BosLob or Blobster are the most common
    • Salt 'n Pepper Shrimp: PiPi
    • Favorite Food Souls are often referred to as Waifoods and Husbentos.
    • Signing a relationship contract is often referred to as "Marriage" for the older-appearing FS characters, and "Adoption" for the younger characters (due to the Squick factor).
  • Fandom-Specific Plot: It's very common to find Slice-Of-Life fanfiction about the daily life of the food souls available in the game with the playable Master Attendant and expand the game's lore even more in varying ways.
  • Game-Breaker: The Black Tea/Milk combo. The "Super Cherry Blossoms" and "Super Milk Shower" skills are some of the best skills the player can get for their team, with the former dealing a lot of damage to all enemies on screen while the latter can mostly fully heal all your team at once. In fact, unless you can make a balanced team only out of Ultra Rare Souls, it's advised for the player to keep them at their team at all times.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • Sandwich is card themed because sandwiches were invented during a game of cards.
    • Eclair has electricity powers because his name means "flash of lightning" in French.
    • Brownie is a butler because in British folklore, brownies are household spirits who perform chores and other tasks for the master of the house while they are asleep.
    • The reasoning behind Pizza's favorite flower being daisies. The Italian word for daisy is "margherita" which can also refer to a type of pizza.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Salad can use his healing powers by tripping from his basket and stomping his face on the ground. While this looks funny, his background reveals he awoke his powers from the first time after trying to save Yogurt from a pack of wolves and tripping in the process. Salad isn't being clumsy, he's trying to mimic what he did back then.
    • Salty Tofu refers to the Master Attendant as a plaything, which the latter is understandable uncomfortable about. Then his backstory reveals he calls all his masters as playthings so he can have them all to himself so that Sweet Tofu won't. Salty isn't insulting the Master Attendant, he's just referring to him/her as his Property of Love.
    • In the game, there are many jokes about how disgusting Long Bao's tea is, with Crab Long Bao (who is his best friend) even comparing his nausea to the feeling of drinking it. However, it is revealed in his backstory that the reason why he makes his tea with vinegar was because it was his previous Master Attendant's favorite. That's right, his only way of honoring his dead MA's memory is constantly being insulted and mocked.
  • Ho Yay:
    • One of the loading screen scenes show Chocolate teasing Coffee in a manner that seems quite flirty.
      • A video for the 2019 Lunar New Year content shows Chocolate holding Coffee's hand in a rather romantic way.
      • There’s also the fact that some NPC’s comment on the relationship between the two, describing how often Chocolate goes to visit the Coffee House looking for the manager, with another implying that there’s likely something going on between the two of them. Both NPC’s give off Yaoi Fangirl vibes.
Girl: The manager of Satan’s Coffee House is quite dashing. He clearly has a lot of admirers, but he’s always been single. There must be a reason, right? Speaking of which, Chocolate always goes to the coffee shop, looking for the manager. You... you don’t suppose, the two of them... Fufufu, now there’s a possibility that sets the imagination on fire.
Princess: One time, Chocolate and Coffee’s eyes met. They fell silent for a few seconds, and the way Chocolate smiled at him...Eeeeek! That scene...it was too amazing!
    • Another one includes Tortoise Jelly and Wonton, with one leaning on the other. The "Forgetful Courtyard" instance event also followed a narrative involving Wonton spending up to ten days nursing Tortoise Jelly back to health after finding him collapsed in the forest.
    • Black Tea and Milk also share a loading screen where Milk tends to Black Tea’s wounds as she fends off an unseen foe. Combined with their Game-Breaker combo skills (mentioned above), the two are widely accepted in the fandom to be girlfriends.
    • Steak and Red Wine's original Master Attendants were a knight and lady that bickered constantly but loved each other deeply, despite protests to the contrary before they got together officially. The game is not at all subtle about drawing comparisons between Steak and Red Wine's relationship and their Master Attendants' relationship.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Boston Lobster. His hatred of humanity becomes more understandable after it is revealed that human scientists experimented on him and forced him to kill some of his fellow Food Souls.
    • The Tofu Twins. As messed up as they are, it's easy understand why they are this way as their previous Master Attendant was neglectful, abusive (emotionally in Sweet Tofu's case and verbally in Salty Tofu's case) and turned out to be a serial killer. In the end, Sweet Tofu was forced to kill the Master Attendant when his brother was away so that the two of them wouldn't become scapegoats for the murder or the Master Attendant's next victims.
    • Spaghetti. His former Master Attendant was a poor yet kindhearted man who was taken in by his rich family. The family however, secretly hated him and only seemed to care about him because he summoned a Food Soul. One day, they decide to poison the man and Spaghetti finds out the truth.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Fan content that pairs any of the Food Souls (sans the younger looking ones) with the Master Attendant is dime a dozen. Especially when the game itself now gives you the pledge system that basically allows you to marry a Food Soul of your choice.
  • Memetic Mutation: Beer's hand Explanation
  • Moe
    • Apple Pie. What she lacks in musical talent she makes up in cheerfulness and a determined personality. Things that also help are that she is drawn in a generally cute art style and the fact that she's currently one of the shortest Food Souls.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • SteakWine: Steak x Red Wine
    • TeaMilk: Black Tea x Milk
    • PekingLobster: Peking Duck x Boston Lobster
  • Sacred Cow: Rice. A good way to piss off the fandom is to hurt her in any way, shape, or form.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Fighting Foodons. Especially since Master Attendant (your character) is often assisted by Rice, while Chase often relied on Fried Ricer. The difference is that Zen/Chase used Fried Ricer as his main combatant, while Rice lost her ability to battle a long time ago.
  • That One Level: Spring Valley 9-2 has Aizen backed up with not only one, but two Amazake's who will render any damage you did to Aizen moot. Unless one has food souls that can silence and charm them (I.E Vodka, Peking Duck and Foie Grass respectively), you're only going to end up in a never ending battle of seeing Aizen healed over and over again. Saucepan lvl3 and other control talents can also help to reduce the healing rate applied to Aizen, but have less of an effect than food souls with similar abilities.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • Linger in an in-game chat channel for long enough and you're likely to eventually see a player saying something among the lines of "Is Brownie a girl or a boy?" The fact that his "Deadly Agent" skin consists of a maid outfit and cat ears does not help matters.
    • Considering Toso's very flat chest along with the straps covering it, you'd be forgiven for thinking she's just a very androgynous Bishōnen.
  • The Woobie:
    • Raindrop Cake. He was contracted with an optimistic man but one day, he was taken away by a woman who wanted to force him into a contract with her but the woman was refused as he stayed loyal to his Master Attendant. He was kept in captivity for days until he decided that he had enough and attacked her, accidentally killing her. In her dying breath, the woman called him a monster that leech onto the life of his masters. After his Master Attendant dies of old age and his second one dies of an illness (she had a terminal sickness before contracting him) he started believing in the woman's words and became gloomy as a result.
    • Rice. She was experimented by evil scientists that wanted to test the capabilities of Food Souls, was separated from her friend Salt 'n Pepper Shrimp and the scientists tried to kill her after she was deemed a failure. She endured it all out of a desire to help humanity. She then finds the love and acceptance she wanted in the form of the playable Master Attendant and befriending her fellow Food Souls, only to lose them by Fallen Angels in "New World". After seeing the Master Attendant die in front of her, she finally loses all hope and breaks in despair. Thank goodness she unlocks her power as Goddess Rice and is able to save them in a new timeline.
    • Dr. Kari was once a kind and idealistic doctor but his food soul, Black Pudding found that boring and decided to turn him into a complete homicidal maniac like her so that they can be together. So she decides to "destroy what's holding him back" by infecting his wife with a deadly illness to get him to "come around". He becomes a serial killer who experiments on his patients in order to find a cure to save his wife. When Pretzel kills him, Kari is completely deluded he's doing the right thing and is unaware of Black Pudding's manipulations. Only Pretzel and Muenchner Weisswurst come to his funeral and the latter laments that ultimately, in the wider memory of the villagers, Kari will be remembered not for the good he did, but the monstrous mistake he made.
    • Everything about Princess Lilia. She had a sick twin that was locked up in isolation, with Lillia being the only one that treated her well. The sister started to resent Lilia and she usurped the throne, killed her parents and became the new queen posing as Lilia while the real one was locked away. However, Lilia never lost her cheerfulness and endured it all with a smile. The kingdom fell into ruin and Lilia was murdered by angry peasants who mistook her for the queen that disgraced them. Not to mention Whisky and Souffle changed for the worse after she died, with Whisky being obsessed with reviving her and Souffle developing an obsession with beautiful things and dolls.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: Some of the characters' outfits are rather...interesting to put it lightly. With the biggest offenders being Long Bao and Eclair.
