YMMV / Five Nights at Wario's

Go To

  • Fridge Horror: Apparently, Wario, Waluigi, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach all disappeared in the fast food factory...and then you take a certain someone into consideration. Though this would prove to be false.
    • The "good ending" of 3. So... what's Rosalina gonna do now? Her friends are dead and she doesn't know time travel doesn't work. Maybe she'll just try one more time?
      • Maybe now that the ghosts have been put to rest, the curse won't follow and the book can no longer be used?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The very premise of the game — using Wario as a source of Nightmare Fuel — became this in light of the "Wario Apparition" memes which began circulating in mid-2020.
  • Jerkass Woobie: While Bruno Gate may be a thief and a murderer, who is also indirectly responsible for much of the tragedy of the franchise. It is easy to feel bad about how much he went through. First of all, he only resorted to his theft to help his sick daughter, and when he died, he was stuck as a ghost and had to live alone with his grief. It gets even worse in Five Shows At Wario's, where Bruno Gate is trapped and manipulated by two demonic figures, and ultimately discarded by both and placed in a Fate Worse than Death when he is no longer useful.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The jumpscare animations to some people, especially since they aren't the best animated.
    • This is especially bad in the first game, since most of the jumpscares animations are lifted from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
    • While the first game does have plenty of Nightmare Fuel moments and things about it that are scary/unsettling, the mechanics of the game itself pushes the game towards this a bit. Unlike the original Five Nights at Freddy's, the power in Five Nights at Wario's is extremely lenient and forgiving (especially since it's 200% instead of 100) meaning you could keep the doors shut for an extended amount of time without worry. Worse, the ghosts (excluding Mario) all act the same, appearing at the doorway and needing to be blocked by the door. You have no incentive to really watch them on the cameras, unlike FNAF where Freddy and Foxy act differently and actually require you to watch them on the camera. The combination of these two things essentially makes the first FNAW game, ridiculously easy to beat and it's impossible to run out of power unless you purposefully waste it.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: 3 is much better received than the first two games.
  • That One Level: The third game’s Hallway is infamous for being more difficult then most other rooms in the game. The camera not working, audio being the only way to find where the spirits are (barring a rare cutscene of Mario hiding), and its ability to ruin an All-Out Mode run.
  • Too Cool to Live: Max and Edward from the 3rd game.
  • Unexpected Character: Who would’ve expected VIRUS to take on a Daisy disguise when the original isn’t in the series at all?
  • The Woobie:
    • Richard, the protagonist of the first game. Despite surviving, Demonic Luigi and later Peach use his body to kill innocent people until forcing him to be shot by the police in the GOOD ENDING of 3.
    • Rosalina. She gets to see her friends become monsters and die over, and over, and over. Her only hope is wiping her own memory by trying time travel and hoping it'll work. Even in the good ending, all her friends have become murderers and are dead.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Unfortunately the case with Ashley. In canon, Ashley is a witch that lives in a haunted mansion and works at Wario Ware Inc. You would think in a game series where two of the games occur in those two locations, and where evil Entities are trying to destroy the world, that a witch like Ashley would have a prominent role. However in-game, Ashley's only appearance is in FNAW 3 in the Bathroom and Staircase. She doesn't appear in the second game, nor is she even mentioned at all in the Endgame Quest where they defeat Entity 01 and Emma. Hell, even when she's corrupted by Wario, Ashley doesn't show any proficiency with magic and casts a single spell.
