YMMV / Eiyuu Senki: The World Conquest

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Bedivere saying, "Oops, I fired it off again!" It's easy to think of something other than her rocket glove.
  • Awesome Ego: Alexander the Great, knowing full well her reputation and also considers it an honor to rename allied cities and weapons after herself. She's so charismatic and serious about it all.
  • Broken Base: The fact that you can romance several heroines who are unmistakeably underage, even if the game never openly states so. While the sex scenes from the original eroge incarnation have been removed and/or toned down to be more censor-friendly, some people still take issue with the inherent sexual undertones. It also doesn't help that given the game's origin, said heroines' character designs are more often than not sexualized to a degree.
  • Complete Monster: Nyarlathotep's acts include resetting the entire world on a whim countless times, pulling the Zipang army into a deranged game, randomly turning Chihaya's allies against him and threatening to kill them one by one if he doesn't play along. She also shows she's capable rewriting entire personalities on a whim, reviving fallen heroes and forcing them to fight while killing them herself if they show a sign of regaining free will, and even taking control of just their bodies while leaving their minds intact. Finally, she reveals all along that she had no intention of losing honorably and erases all of the heroes except Chihaya to prove her point. Her only motive is her own entertainment.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • The character event where Alexander asks Chihaya to elaborate more about "pro wrestling"note  and references one of Aristotle's books that is virtually the equivalent of the Kama Sutra! Euphemisms abound.
Alexander: What is this stick that the man is holding so triumphantly? I wish to learn more about a man's weapon!
    • Ywain being a Sir Swears-a-Lot? Not funny and undignified. Ywain being a 10-year old girl Sir Swears-a-Lot? Hilarious!
  • Ending Fatigue: With the sheer number of characters joining the army all at once upon reaching the EU, taking time to complete all of the character events and other side quests can really slow the pace of the main plot down despite being worth the effort to obtain skills/money/items from completing them.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Arthur, Beethoven, Billy the Kid, Francis Drake, Sir Percival, and Tutankhamun became popular enough in Japan to have figures of them made.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Conquer Macedonia before the Indias and Vinland before the Incas to receive items that allow the user to act first in battle and have a 0 Wait time, respectively. Equip those to Magoroku Kanemoto after she learns her final Skill to allow her to instantly charge the player's Brave gauge by 5 immediately at the beginning of battle. Combine that with a high-speed hero whose final Skill has a large Area of Effect (such as Marco Polo) to instantly gain an enormous advantage in battle. For further breakage, equip the attacking hero with the item that instantly adds 1000 damage, another to boost Critical Damage, and utilize passive battle formation skills to vastly increase her Critical Hit rate.
    • Montezuma's Hero Skill sacrifices herself to give the party 5 Brave and is useful if she's about to run out of health and likely won't survive the battle. Combine that with items that grant 2 and 3 Brave upon defeat and she'll provide a full Brave bar.
    • Goemon's Hero Skill provides a high-powered, automatic Critical Hit against its target. Equip her with Critical Damage-boosting items and she can easily deliver a One-Hit Kill against practically anything outside of the Bonus Dungeon. And because a Critical Hit will interrupt a charging attack, it's entirely possible to utilize her skill to defeat the final boss before she can even land a single attack.
    • Atlas's Orichalcum Punch: It hits the entire enemy grid, has no Wait time, and can be used from anywhere. While the damage it does isn't overly great, the game breaking power comes from it hitting all of the enemies with a Wait +30 and will usually Interrupt any enemy charging a skill.
    • Futsunomitama, which adds 1000 flat damage to any attack. Of every hit. Equipping it on Achilles will enable her 17-hits Hero Skill to inflict a guaranteed 17000 damage on her target, in addition to any further damage the attack would have dealt normally. Given Achilles' amazing speed, this skill's wonderfully short delay, and the fact it will generates a large amount of Brave against most Unit Types, anyone on the receiving end is gonna be in a world of hurt.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • The fact that Archimedes is wearing nothing but a bath towel refers to the real-world Archimedes being the Trope Namer for "Eureka!" Moment while taking a bath.
    • Why is Charlemagne's outfit covered with hearts? The King of Hearts in a standard deck of cards is Charlemagne. In the same vein, Alexander, who represents the King of Clubs, wears a cloak covered in club icons and has one drawn on her forehead. This is alluded further in one Shambhala stage, where they are joined by Caesar and Lancelot (who represents the King of Diamonds and the Jack of Clubs respectively) to form the "Four Cards" team.
    • Cu Chulainn's ability to transform into a giant dog creature is a reference to her mythological counterpart's origin, who took his name after killing Culann the smith's fierce guard-dog in self-defence and offered to take its place (Cu Chulainn meaning "Culann's Hound").
  • Love to Hate: Nyarlathotep is one hell of a villain. She is an excellent example of For the Evulz done very well.
  • Moe:
    • Kamehameha. The most energetic Genki Girl in the cast (out of several) and never lets anything get down. Her smile is so infectious and she's so cute you just want to hug her. As a bonus, she will give you a hug (and lots of kisses) as well.
    • Tutankhamun. Being as shy and reserved as she is while having a cute face and petite frame make her simply adorable.
    • Huanya Capac. Always fighting hard for her friends and her people, never wanting to be a burden, and proving to be a valuable asset. She's all of kind, strong, and cute. The character event where she collapses from a fever illustrates this the most.
    • Gawain in her little girl form is simply cute as a button, especially when she blushes.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Nyarlathotep's introductory scene reveals she crossed it long before the events of the game. And many of the things the party has to do that are her responsibility only push her further and further in.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Getting a Critical Hit on the enemy army.
    • Whenever you acquire a new item / heroines, and when one of the heroines (or Chihaya) acquire a new skill.
  • Narm: Arthur's Brainwashed and Crazy portrait replaces the hearts in her pupils with spirals, making her look more like she's drunk than under enemy control.
  • Nightmare Retardant: Mu's transformed state after obtaining the Staff of Narayana. With the large, pointy nose and humongous grin, she looks far too goofy to be scary.
  • Player Punch: Nyarlathotep erasing all of the heroes except Chihaya after round 1 of the True End route final battle.
  • Porting Disaster: While technically functional, the PS3 port has noticeably longer loading times and controls much less responsively than the original PC version. The fact that this game requires intensive micromanagement, yet the console version spent no effort to compensate for the difficulty with menu-navigation using a controller instead of a mouse also didn't help.
    • The Vita port is even worse in this regard as the limited functionality of the handheld causes severe lagging once players hit the late game, making the game borderline unplayable.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: The game encourages them: Trophies for a winning battle with just Chihaya and winning a battle without taking any damage, rewards for conquering harder regions ahead of schedule, and numerous possibilities the player could come up with.
  • That One Boss:
    • Although technically optionalnote , the rematch fight against Angolmois on the True Ending route: 180,000 HP, will consistently summon Mooks to wail on your units, and everyone starts the battle with a -5 penalty to every stat. Himiko's Refresh ability can dispel the stat reductions but it's still an exhausting battle and much harder than the final boss.
    • And then there's the Shambhala battle against 5 Baby Angolmois, who will consistently summon each other if you don't kill them quickly enough. Given that they are all Magic Type, therefore can gain a lot of Brave from your attacks, it will be a guaranteed defeat if you can't kill them off within the first 10 turns.
  • That One Level: The last level of Shambhala, which puts you through 10 consecutive battles, with the final battle having you up against Arthur and all of her knights. This, coupled with the brutal setup provided for the oppositions, means that merely managing to finish this level would be a small wonder on its own.
  • That One Sidequest: In every other case, conquering the tougher countries first for bonus items isn't too difficult, provided the player is patient in marshalling their forces first, diligent in completing side quests for items and power-ups, and wise in allocating their funding upgrades and powerful equipment. Conquering Russia before the EU is another story. On top of a fairly powerful and well-arranged army, utilizing both Sword and Lance enemies backed up by Cannons to hit all over the board and make weakness exploitation difficult, if you haven't conquered the EU yet and recruited da Vinci so she can invent something brilliant to keep the army warm, then you suffer a crippling 50% hitpoint reduction at the start of each offensive battle, draining your combat strength before the fight even begins. (Mercifully, this doesn't apply to defensive battles so at least holding whatever bits of Russia you managed to scrape away is worlds easier.) Claiming Moscow without cheating requires either incredible patience or being as much of a masochist as Ivan's soldiers. To add insult to injury, the game makes declaring war on Russia an available option long before it's realistic or feasible, meaning an unwary player who doesn't save wisely might be stuck with an implacable enemy constantly reinforcing themselves for dozens of turns.
  • The Woobie: Sir Tristan really gets no respect from her subordinates: Palamedes constantly tries to poison her, Kay cares more about the rooms she has to clean over Tristan's health, and Ywain is constantly putting her down while letting her lion mow her over. It's no small wonder she's a Perpetual Frowner and really needs a hug.
