YMMV / BoBoiBoy

Go To

Specific YMMV pages

Examples for the show as a whole:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Mechamato Movie, the film of the prequel series, reveals in its mid-credit scene that Amato planned the meeting of BoBoiBoy and Ochobot. This resulted in many questions from the fandom: Does Amato have no idea about the Elemental Powers inside Ochobot and simply choose him to be his son's Robot Buddy so that BoBoiBoy will never feel lonely while he's away on his job as a galactic superhero? Or does he know about the powers inside Ochobot and, since he knows that he will often leave Earth, intentionally set up his son as his successor in protecting Earth?
  • Alternate Self Shipping: A majority of the fandom enjoys shipping BoBoiBoy's elemental forms with each other due to their contrasting personalities and power dynamics such as Lightning/Thunderstorm-Wind/Cyclone, Fire/Blaze-Water/Ice and Leaf/Thorn-Light/Solar. Earth/Quake is the only element who is rarely involved in these ships. However, some fans tend to ship him with the other "serious elemental forms" like Lightning or Light, or have him in a One True Threesome with Lightning and Wind as they are the original elemental trio.
  • Awesome Art: The art of BoBoiBoy Galaxy comic is often praised by fans, especially for the Art Evolution of the comic that leans more towards Animesque.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Some fans are fine with Gopal's cowardice and purpose as comic relief. However, fans also feel annoyed with him due to almost never having any character development to move on from his cowardice, and some of his funny moments aren't considered funny at all and feel forced. As a result, fans found Gopal to become more annoying, and made him their least favorite character, even though he is one of BoBoiBoy's best friends.
    • Even though Yaya/Hanna has the third largest fanbase in the show, some fans object due to her being a perfectionist and the statement that almost all the school clubs are handled by her, merely because she is The Ace among the students. Some found Yaya to be too overrated as a result as she has almost no real flaws or depth unlike the rest of the characters. Thankfully this is already reduced in BoBoiBoy Galaxy due to it being a soft-reboot of the series.
    • Qually from BoBoiBoy Galaxy Season 2 is this, especially after he becomes a Honorary True Companion toward Team BoBoiBoy. Some fans feel he's a fine addition as a Guest-Star Party Member or Sixth Ranger for the team who will not betray of leave it like Adu Du or Cattus and Fang will not be the sole Token Non-Human for the team. Other fans see him as an unnecessary addition to the team, especially since he has no interesting power or role aside from Team Chef or comic relief partner for Gopal. Some of them blame Qually for Fang lack of screentime in Season 2 and lack of friendship moments between Gopal and BoBoiBoy since Gopal become Qually's real First Friend after his Heel Realization in the end of Rimbara Arc.
  • Broken Base:
    • After Agent Ali was released and quickly gained popularity due to the series having a more serious and darker tone for a kid's show, viewers think that BoBoiBoy is dull due to its series being Lighter and Softer for a superhero cartoon.
    • Most fans accepted BoBoiBoy Galaxy Season 2 being continued as a comic series since this can help save time and money on animation, especially with the constraints during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and to ease the expansion of world building. Unfortunately, the comic only releases in Bahasa Malaysia, the home country's language, making it difficult for the non-Malaysian fandom to follow upcoming series updates. However, this is relieved, as English versions of the comics are actually available on Google Play Books, Comixology and Webtoon, the last of which is free.
  • Complete Monster: Bora Ra and Retak'ka. See the respective movie pages for details.
  • Creepy Cute:BoBoiBoy Lightning/Thunderstorm and BoBoiBoy Fire/Blaze. They have still inherited the original BoBoiBoy's kindhearted side and adorableness, but have no problem with using brutal force to defeat their opponents. Special mention goes to the way Thunderstorm often shows his menacing Death Glare thanks to his red-blood eyes whenever he gets mad, which is seen as cool, adorable and creepy at the same time by fans.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Before BoBoiBoy Fire/Blaze, BoBoiBoy Leaf, and BoBoiBoyLight/Solar made their respective debuts, BoBoiBoy Lightning/Thunderstorm instantly became one of the fandom's favorite forms due to being one of the most aggressive, serious and violent out of all of BoBoiBoy's elemental forms. His edgy-looking clothing style also helped boost his popularity with both older and younger fans.
    • Papa Zola is quite loved by the fandom as a comic-relief character, and the official social medias love to post memes featuring him giving his funny advice. Unfortunately, some fans are displeased that he was permanently Put on a Bus in Galaxy Season 2 by being completely moved to his own Spin-Off show named Papa Pipi.
    • Captain Kaizo. Being the Final Boss in Season 3 who instantly defeats Ejo Jo and BoBoiBoy's gang, he quickly became popular among fans, especially after The Reveal that he was an Anti-Hero and Fang's older brother. This drove him to make a re-appearance in BoBoiBoy Galaxy and his past is revealed in an extra chapter of the comic.
    • Out of the Elemental Fusion forms so far, BoBoiBoy Gentar was most quickly loved by the fandom. Mainly due to his unpredictable personality that can be hilariously swift to change between serious and arrogant, not to mention he has lots of Jojo-esque gimmicks which resulted fans declaring he is the manliest elemental form of all.
    • Maripos, Kuputeri's loyal adjutant, quickly found himself loved by many fans due to his incredibly handsome appearance and his wickedness during his battle with BoBoiBoy and Fang in the early parts of the Windara Arc.
  • Evil Is Cool: Retak'ka, due to his power-set, cool design, complex backstory and his characterization as an Evil Counterpart of sorts to BoBoiBoy, resulted in the fandom feeling that he is the coolest villain in the series.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • For the fans who feel the hero's name to be quite a mouthful, they shorten BoBoiBoy's name to "Bob" or "Boi/Boy". Him using it as a semi-official nickname for himself on the official social medias also helps.
    • Fans love to call BoBoiBoy Halilintar (BoBoiBoy Thunderstorm's original name),BoBoiBoy Taufan (BoBoiBoy Cyclone's original name) and BoBoiBoy Beliung (BoBoiBoy Tempest's original name) as "Hali", "Upan" and "Bel".
    • Thanks to this post, some of fans called Fang as "Frengki" whenever they post something funny about Fang.
    • BoBoiBoy Frostfire is often compared to Todoroki due to having Fire and Ice powers that are split between halves of their body.
    • Amato is often referred to as "Dadmato" or "Mr. Amato" whenever Monsta posts something about him and his son BoBoiBoy. While his wife is often referred as "Mrs. Wifey", her name and her real identity still remain unrevealed.
    • Fans also like to call BoBoiBoy's elemental forms the "Elemental Septuplets" due to their dynamic being sometimes more like brothers rather than his "other selves".
    • "Ori Trio" is a nickname of the three BoBoiBoy's elemental forms (Lightning/Thunderstorm, Wind/Cyclone/Tempest and Earth/Quake) that appear from early episode of original season.
    • "Temper Duo" is often used by fans to refer duo of elemental forms like Fire/Blaze and Water/Ice.
    • "Troublemaker Trio" refers to three elemental forms like Wind/Cyclone/Tempest, Fire/Blaze and Leaf/Thorn/Rimba since three of them are chaotic, fun-loving and borderline childish. In the episode "B.R.R.O.'s Revenge", this leads to them acting at random in middle of battle since all three of them share the' same brain-cell.
    • "Sunflower Duo" or "Photosynthesis Duo" is often used to refer the duo dynamics of Leaf/Thorn/Rimba and Light/Solar. They are also often called "Lil-bro duo" or "Duo Adik Bongsu" in Malay and Indonesian due to them being the last Elemental Forms to be awakened and their bickering looking like typical little brothers who like teasing each other.
    • Fans also often call BoBoiBoy Earth/Quake "Mom-Gem" due to him being the most responsible Elemental Form who is often the Only Sane Man in the team.
    • "Bendul Ijo"/"Bendul Hijau" note  is used by fans to refer to BoBoiBoy Leaf/Thorn/Rimba due to his powers and color motif.
  • Fandom Rivalry: BoBoiBoy has had a long rivalry with the Agent Ali series. Both series are popular Malaysian action animated shows aimed towards kids. Most of the fans are debating how BoBoiBoy is "too kid-friendly" due to favouring comedy in contrast to its serious side, while Agent Ali is much darker than the BoBoiBoy series.
  • Fanon:
    • Most fans believe BoBoiBoy's elemental forms have their own personalities and somehow are also influenced from past users.
    • Since most of fans believe that Elemental Forms have their own consciousnesses instead coming from BoBoiBoy's Literal Split Personality, some of them believe that his Power Watch contains a dimension where the Elemental Forms live when they are not used by BoBoiBoy. BoBoiBoy Fire's reaction to seeing BoBoiBoy Water for the first time implies that they live in a separate dimension.
    • Some fans often portray Satriantar as more of a "strong and aggressive independent woman" than Kuputeri since Lightning/Thunderstorm/Voltra's power is downright aggressive.
    • Some fans believe BoBoiBoy eventually has a permanent scar around his wrist after he fights against Kira'na and undergoes a painful retransfer of his Lightning/Thunderstorm power to save her and the planet Gur'latan. This is also supported by the fact that his right wrist is covered with a bandage in the last issue of Galaxy Season 2.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With the Pixar movie Elemental (2023); both have elemental-themed characters (BoBoiBoy can split into elemental duplicates of himself, and '"Elemental'' has Elemental Embodiments for characters).
    • BoBoiBoy fans also really get along with Genshin Impact fans. It helps that many Monsta Studio comic artists also play or are fans of the game.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • One of the PSA videos titled "PSA Hari Raya-'Berhati-hati di Jalan Raya" is about Granddad taking BoBoiBoy to visit his hometown. The video ends with Granddad only driving his his car around his house while declaring that his current house in Rintis Island is his hometown. Mechamato and the newest Eid-ul Fitr video in 2022 show that Granddad originally came from Hilir City. After his wife passed away and his son no longer lived with him, Granddad chose to move permanently to Rintis Island because he didn't want want to continue living in loneliness in his old house, and wanted to try to move on from the grief.
    • The series itself has a lot of Running Gags of being left behind in space without a spacesuit. Episode 24 of BoBoiBoy Galaxy instead treats it as a dark and serious case where the titular hero almost gets killed by Vargoba after being violently punched out into space by his hammer.
    • The meeting of BoBoiBoy Water and BoBoiBoy Fire in the original season is mixed up with funny and cute moments because of Fire's reaction to seeing Water, and they end up quarreling due to Water challenging Fire after missing his attack. In Issue 20 of BoBoiBoy Galaxy season 2, Blaze and Ice lose their memory and they get into a serious fight thanks to Ice provoking Blaze. Their fight is downright brutal to the point they almost use their 3rd tier forms to finish each other and unknowingly almost endanger their friend's life. Additionally, Fire and Water's first meeting in the OG series ends in a hilarious squabble that annoys even their enemy, who declares watching the humorous moment a waste of time. In Galaxy Season 2, Blaze and Ice's duel is pictured in gruesome detail, unlike their base tier's quarrel in the OG series. Had they succeeded in using their 3rd-tier forms on each other, BoBoiBoy could very well get ''killed'' because Blaze and Ice are both parts of himself.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In the 6th episode, when BoBoiBoy Wind and BoBoiBoy Earth were debating who the real BoBoiBoy was due to memory loss, the former calls the latter "pencetak rompak," accusing the other of being a pasted copy. An episode in BoBoiBoy Galaxy introduces the power spheras "Cetakbot" and "Rompakbot", translated as "Copybot" and "Pastebot" respectively, who possess abilities in making bootleg versions of anything by copying and pasting mechanical counterparts of it. BoBoiBoy would end up fighting himself again, a lot of them.
    • In the Season 1 finale, Tok Aba tells Gopal to stop being so dramatic over BoBoiBoy leaving, saying that he was simply going home, not to the moon. Season 3 has the heroes end up on the moon by flying Adu Du's spaceship to escape Bago Go's brothers.
    • Sometimes both fandoms love to make crossover fanarts between Agent Ali and BoBoiBoy. There have been several instances of the official accounts of Agent Ali and BoBoiBoy interacting as if they were the characters themselves, such as BoBoiBoy passing a relay baton to Ali and the latter accepting it as both would release major films in 2019, Agent Ali the Movie being a few months after BoBoiBoy Movie 2, as well as Ali sending a congratulatory tweet for BoBoiBoy's birthday in 2022. These also double as Heartwarming in Hindsight.
    • A lot of fans love to make headcanon or AUs where BoBoiBoy's elemental forms act like twin brothers. In the promotional video "Air Selangor x BoBoiBoy Episod 4: Selamatkan Sungai Kita", a monster named Sam mistook BoBoiBoy Water and BoBoiBoy Leaf as twins. Ironically, BoBoiBoy canonically has no siblings.
    • During the fight against Ejo Jo, Papa Zola questions why an exhausted Tok Aba didn't become a superhero when he was younger to last longer in a fight. While Tok Aba presumably never became one, it turns out that his son was one during his youth and he was fully aware of it.
    • In Issue 9 of the comic, BoBoiBoy Solar eats a fruit that resembles the Gum-Gum Fruits from One Piece. One year after Issue 9 released, Gum-Gum Fruits turn out to be a Zoan-type fruit and its other name is Human-Human fruits, Model: Sun God Nika.
  • Iron Woobie: BoBoiBoy already away from his parents since young and difficult to check him on Earth due to their jobs. In Galaxy series, he forced to leave his granddad for helping TAPOPS in their mission to protect Power Sphera from bad guys. BoBoiBoy always suffer Near-Death Experience and then meeting one of his Elemental Powers predecessor who ended become irredeemable villain due to his corruption by his power in past. Despite being haunted of a fear on suffer the same fate with Retak'ka after gaining Tempest and being blamed by one of Big Bad due to out-of-grief of losing her father by his evil predecessor, BoBoiBoy remains strong and keep going on to protecting galaxies and proved to everyone that he is not same as Retak'ka.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Fang is a hot-headed Glory Seeker Anti-Hero who seeks popularity and dislikes it when he feels someone else is more popular than him. As the story progress, more depth can be seen in Fang as a character. An extra chapter in the 7th BoBoiBoy Galaxy comic shows that after the tragedy that happened to his parents and his homeplanet due to the Tengkotak when he was still a toddler, Fang no longer had a normal childhood like other kids since he spent his time learning and training to be a young soldier and spy for Kaizo to search for Power Spheres. This also heavily implies that Fang had no real friends until he met BoBoiBoy and the others.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Many fans admit that they're just watching the show for Fang and/or BoBoiBoy Lightning and Thunderstorm.
    • As of season 2 of Galaxy, some fans solely read and watch it to see BoBoiBoy's new Elemental Fusion forms and 3rd tier forms.
  • Magnificent Bastard:
    • Original series: Captain Kaizo, the Legendary Space Rebel, makes his debut by swiftly neutralising the mighty Ejo Jo in minutes, when it previously took Team BoBoiBoy four episodes. Kaizo dispatches his younger brother Fang to retrieve the power bands, and inclines to punish him severely when he disobeys by befriending their Kid Hero wielders instead. Using his swordsmanship, energy powers and sharp wit, he outmatches the heroes twice, fighting with a smirk and a stylised fashion. Their strongest attacks bruise him, but he remains standing while the heroes collapse from exhaustion. Satisfied with their battle, he deems them worthy of their powers and invites them to join his team on their mission to protect power spheres from abuse. Despite understanding his good intentions, Team BoBoiBoy refuses his offer due to his violent ways.
    • Galaxy:
      • "Rimbara Arc": Qually is a young alien from Planet Rimbara who is determined to achieve his dream of becoming the Ultimate Chef. While he is a Lovable Coward and not physically strong, it doesn't stop Qually from aiming for his dream by any means. He seeks Guru Gaharum and accepts his difficult task to find rare ingredients to prove himself as a worthy successor to him. Realizing that Team BoBoiBoy have received the same task, Qually uses this opportunity to get the ingredients by pretending to be a mellow friend to them, sabotaging the spaceship to separate the team from Fang, and framing BoBoiBoy and Gopal for attempting to steal from the local aliens. During the cooking contest, Qually demonstrates his perfect cooking skills and plays fair in the competition without issue. When Gaharum declares both sides joint winners, he gives Qually his secret recipe book which contains many rare dishes from the galaxy as a gift. Qually offers a handshake to Team BoBoiBoy as an apology and to show his admiration of their determination while offering them a chance to let him join their team as a Team Chef and Guest-Star Party Member.
      • "Gur'latan Arc": Kira'na, Satriantar's granddaughter, is the charismatic host of the TAPOPS grand-meeting, who quickly points out that TAPOPS is overly dependent on BoBoiBoy and his team, which causes them to be late to save her home planet and her father from Retak'ka's rampage. Determined to continue her family legacy by becoming the next Empress and taking BoBoiBoy's Thunderstorm power for the future of planet Gur'latan, Kira'na hires Mr. Pato to build a perfect copy of Satriantar and pretend to be BoBoiBoy's helper to defeat the robot rampage by offering him a sword that can absorb his power. She proves to be as dangerous as Kaizo in swordsmanship, and exploits BoBoiBoy's traumas and insecurities as the Elemental Powers holder, dampening his spirits to make him fear using Tempest against her. In her last stand, although she hesitates to accept BoBoiBoy's help, she finally does so for the sake of her citizens' safety, and realizes that she is not alone and still has loved ones. Realizing that the titular Kid Hero and TAPOPS still give her a second chance, Kira'na tearfully apologizes to them and is grateful for their agreement to help her citizens after the fight.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "What kind of a joke is this? It makes me shed a tear of justice!"Explanation
    • Rizal bin Ismail Explanation
    • Aduhai BlazeExplanation
    • Hali (The) sword SPOILER
    • Solar real enemy is the Artist Explanation
    • Tak Payah, Biarkan dia berdikari ! SPOILER ALERT
  • Moral Event Horizon: Captain Vargoba from BoBoiBoy Galaxy brutally attacked BoBoiBoy's gang and the other members of T.A.P.O.P.S.. In the worst case, he successfully threw BoBoiBoy out into the vacuum of space with a smash of his hammer, almost killing him on screen. This became the darkest moment in the BoBoiBoy series.
  • Pandering to the Base: Thunderstorm was one of the most popular elemental forms. In Galaxy, first-stage BoBoiBoy Lightning is designed to be more similar to him now using swords instead of throwing kris and having a slower Flash Step ability when he originally had none.
  • Platonic Writing, Romantic Reading: In the Gur'latan arc, several readers assumed Kira'na had a crush on Kaizo due to her little Crush Blush and small chuckle after Fang's answer about his whereabouts and how both of them have their own Affectionate Nickname like "Kai" and "Kira" for each other. Her revelation that she is the Arc Villain and also Fang and Kaizo's foster sister doesn't stop readers from continuing ship her with Kaizo, since some of their interaction leans toward Foe Romance Subtext.
  • Recurring Fanon Character: BoBoiBoy Reverse is a fan-made version of BoBoiBoy who has color-inverted hair (white with a black stripe instead of a skunk stripe) and is often depicted by fans as "BoBoiBoy, but evil." His origin likely comes from a Staff Created Fanwork AU comic where he appears with the white hair and attacks his friends, though he was only described as an "anti-hero" and had yet to be called Reverse.
  • Self-Fanservice: Mild Example since it doesn't sexualize the characters. Lot of fans enjoy making the titular character and his friends more attractive and mature. The boys are often drawn a bit sturdier and taller than the girls. There is also fanart of aged-up versions of the Kokotaim Team by several artists that can be found on social media . And most of the art is drawn in an anime style.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Most of the fans are disappointed by the removal of BoBoiBoy Lightning's signature weapon, Lightning Kris, which was changed to "Lightning Blade" in the Galaxy Series. Although one of the writers confirmed that "Lightning Blade" is an upgraded version of Lightning Kris, fans feel replacing the signature weapon erases the unique relationship between Lightning and Thunderstorm as the weapon reflects the Forms' respective attacks and aggressiveness. Fans also feel the creators could have just make a more modern version of Lightning Kris with additional details, instead of replacing it with another weapon that is similar to his evolved form and only erases the uniqueness of the character.
    • Some fans are a bit disappointed with the change to BoBoiBoy's 3D face model for Galaxy Season 2 as they feel that his face model is too "kiddy" for his current age (14 years old). Compare it to his old model in Galaxy Season 1 and any promotional Monsta Video, where his teenage face is still noticeable.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • A minor character named Papileon is often mistaken for a boy due to her tomboyish appearance and masculine name.
    • Many readers find it difficult to know General Sa'riya's gender since the character has a feminine name but lacks feminine features. Despite one of the comic's artists referring to Sa'riya by using "she/her", which means that Sa'riya is female all along, some readers still get confused about this, even still referring to the character by using "they/them".
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?:
    • The BoBoiBoy series attempted to be the first "child-friendly action" show due to protests from parents about how the characters used "How dare you!" in kid shows. note . However, as the story progressed, especially in Season 3, BoBoiBoy The Movie and BoBoiBoy Galaxy, lots of darker scenes were included in the show such as attempted murder and torture.
    • Windara Arc is considered to darker arc compared the other arc in both the Original Series and Galaxy series. This arc also shows blatant heavy topics like war, rebellion and slavery being carried out by Emperor Reramos and his allies. Special mention that BoBoiBoy Cyclone action to defeat Karantular is pretty suicidal given that is fully aware he is already weakened but is still willing to perform a Heroic Sacrifice to save his allies. BoBoiBoy Cyclone transformation to BoBoiBoy Tempest is cool, but also pretty gruesome since visibly gets hurt and Mind Raped due to being unable to control the huge amount of wind power.
