Word Of God / Villainous (Cartoon Network)

Go To

Villainous (Cartoon Network) creator, Alan Ituriel, has answered many questions about the show and characters on Twitter. Some of them include Black Hat filming his commercials with a robotic camera, Dr. Flug being a Cowardly Lion, and the device on Demencia's leg being a tracking device.

Black Hat

  • He can play both the organ and the violin. The one he owns has strings made out of cat's guts.
  • He likes neither dogs nor cats.
  • He doesn't need to sleep.
    • Whether or not he actually can sleep is debatable.
  • A "prototype" of Black Hat's design was designed back in 2008 by Alan Ituriel and uploaded to DeviantArt.
  • Black Hat's modern design was made at some point around 2015, as art posted by Ami Guillén depicts him as such.
  • Black Hat is said to be in retirement; however, he is still attempting to run a business by selling evil items to villains despite this. This is due to boredom.
  • He's the ruler of Hat Island, and the landlord of all villains that choose to live there.
    • Black Hat rules from the shadows: although all inhabitants of the island know the Hat, not all know about his existence.
  • According to an AI Animations livestream, he uses British slang, particularly saying "bloody" very often. During said livestream he also used the word "pillock".
  • When asked about whether Black Hat has organs or not, Alan replied that once he ripped his own heart out to scare 5.0.5., then simply dropped it on the ground and left.
  • He has been confirmed to be 2.03 meters, or about 6.66 feet tall. 666 is a number often associated with sin, the devil, and demons in general, fitting his appearance and mannerisms.
  • Black Hat is very, very old.
  • Despite being a villain, Black Hat is referred to as a hero in the OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes episode "Crossover Nexus". This is most likely due to having no heroes in the main cast of Villainous. The same can be said for Major Dr. Ghastly from Evil Con Carne, who also had a cameo in the episode.
    • According to Dr. Flug in Q&A Black Hat Organization replies, this is actually Black Hat #02, who is still a statue as of the release of La Bitácora de Dr. Flug.
  • In one of the Villainous Comics, it is revealed that the ice in his cold beverages comes from the Ice King's tears.
  • In "The Perception of Evil", Black Hat's clone wears a bowler hat under his top hat. The original is confirmed to do the same in "The VVV".
    • Furthermore, Black Hat has in his office a machine that puts his top hat on his head for him.
  • He eats both animals and people, as well as "gory and nasty stuff". The former has been shown during "BH's Bizarre Bad-Venture".
    • Much like sleeping, Alan claims he doesn't know if Black Hat needs to eat.
  • He's able to walk at the bottom of the ocean.
  • Alan revealed on June 28, 2019, on AI Animations live stream, that Black Hat melts puppies when he is bored.
  • Alan also revealed on his stream's that:
    • (July 23, 2019) Black Hat doesn't like any living being and only enjoys their presence when they're suffering.
    • (July 20, 2019) After you sign a contract with Black Hat, your perception of him changes.
    • (July 20, 2019) Black Hat has attended meetings of his own cult.
    • (July 20, 2019) Black Hat won't praise Flug even if he does it perfectly. If Black Hat can't find a flaw with Flug's work, he'll be like, 'it's your job anyway'.
  • In the episode "The VVV", Black Hat is revealed to be the entity that inspired the legend of the Charro Negro, a myth from Mexican folklore.
  • Alan Ituriel said on a livestream that if there was ever a Villainous live-action movie, his choice of actor for Black Hat would be Tom Hiddleston.
  • Black Hat is aware of your existence.

Dr. Flug

  • Flugslys translates to "flight light" in Icelandic, a word that means "plane crash. "Flug" also translates to "flight" in German.
    • This ties into Dr. Flug's t-shirt design and the airplane stuck in Black Hat's manor.
    • Flug states he arrived at Black Hat Org by plane, likely the same one that crashed in the manor.
    • "The Dreadful Dawn" reveals that Flug lives in the crashed plane alongside 5.0.5.
    • "The Lost Cases of Elmore" reveals Flug collects real-life planes by shrinking them down and storing them like snow globes. He doesn’t let the people out of the planes though.
  • It has been confirmed that Dr. Flug is of Icelandic descent. His first name, Kenning, is an Icelandic word that translates to "theory" in English.
    • He usually goes by Dr. Flug because most people he meets pronounce "Flugslys" wrong.
    • Calling him Ken upsets him, because he can't help but think of the Barbie doll. Demencia, of course, loves calling him Ken.
  • Flug's birthday is on August 23rd.
    • Flug's zodiac sign is Virgo.
    • August 23rd is National Ride the Wind Day, which celebrates innovative aviation. August 23rd, 1977 marked the first stable flight of a human-powered aircraft.
    • Black Hat forbids the crew from celebrating Flug's birthday, and Flug is too busy regardless.
      • However, at midnight 5.0.5 greets Flug with a baked cake and gifts. Demencia sometimes joins in, although she pelts Flug with paper planes and hugs him way too tightly.
  • He has both a driver's license and a pilot's license, though they have been revoked for... legal reasons.
  • Flug likes puns.
  • His favorite color is yellow.
  • He loves pancakes.
    • Flug also enjoys pasta, waffles, salad and lemon pie.
    • He has an irrational fear of sandwiches. This is due to an embarrassing incident in the past that will be revealed later in the series.
  • Doctors' handwriting is notoriously sloppy. Stephan does Flug's handwriting as it's the worst of all the crew members.
  • Voice actor José Macías's sense of humor helped Flug's character become much funnier.
  • A villain who wears a mask as a form of punishment and/or mark of evil is an archetype seen in villains like Bane and Darth Vader. Alan Ituriel always intended Flug to be a parody of this archetype, and realized a paper bag mask was ideal since it was perfectly ridiculous.
  • Flug is forced to wear his bag. Sometimes he appreciates the anonymity, but most of the time he resents having to wear it.
    • No one else in Black Hat Organization know what Flug's face looks like except Black Hat himself.
    • Flug prefers to shower with his bag on. He will take it off occasionally to wash his hair, as long as no one is looking.
    • Alan has drawn his real face and will reveal it later in the series.
    • When asked if he'll reveal Flug's real face soon, Alan explained "No, because I don't think you're ready"
  • Dr. Flug graduated with a degree in Mad Science from the Devil's University of Crime, a rough translation of "Universidad del Diablo," or, "University of the Devil." He also has various degrees in Quantum Physics and Aeronautics.
    • It is unknown whether or not this degree is a doctorate, master, or bachelor. As such, it is debated whether or not his title as a Doctor is official, though he has bragged about having "more doctorates than acne on your ugly face."
    • While he is a mechanical engineer, he never actually got a degree in that field.
  • Dr. Flug learned advanced Mandarin in kindergarten and also speaks French.
  • He played the flute in elementary school. Despite this, Flug does not personally like music. This is because he has yet to hear music that makes him feel.
    • Demencia plays her guitar at excruciating volumes for this reason.
    • However, Demencia also feels it is her duty to discover a type of music Flug would like.
    • Flug does try to sing 5.0.5 to sleep, but his idea of a lullaby is singing about sedative chemicals like Chloroform.
  • Flug home schools 5.0.5.
  • On June 28, 2019, AI Animation Studios' Alan revealed that Flug as a child used to play video games, though no longer has the time to do so as an adult.
  • Flug doesn't have any known allergies.
  • When he has a rare moment to himself, Dr. Flug likes to build model airplanes and read books. He also loves to read to 5.0.5.
  • Dr. Flug uses a cryobed to rest, freezing himself until the morning. When he tries to sleep normally, he has tormented dreams of both his past and present.
  • Dr. Flug dislikes wearing clothes that show his skin "because he's a nerd" (Alan). However, he would wear shorts if he had to.
  • He is somewhat socially awkward:
    • He gets nervous around new people but can warm up to those who are careful in their introductions, even accepting hugs.
    • Flirting is not his forte. He makes a lot of plane comparisons.
    • Flug cannot dance, and only did so at school dances because his mother forced him to.
  • It's possible Flug has a deceased or unrequited love interest. In the October 4th 2019 Live Stream, after Miguel recited Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," a fan asked who Flug's "Lenore" was. This question could not be answered directly by either Alan or Miguel.
  • He bears a loose resemblance to Bucky McBadbat, a character from the animated television series The Fairly OddParents!.
  • In "The Lost Cases of Elmore" episode it is shown that he personally knew Gumball Watterson's mother, Nicole Watterson. They seem to have had a bad relationship.
    • It is revealed that he invented the remote Rob used in The Disaster and The Rerun and the guy who sold Rob the remote stole it from him.
  • Flug has a brother, however, it has not been specified whether he is his older brother or his younger brother.
    • In The Dreadful Dawn, a picture frame in Flug's room shows him with his family, including his brother. However, Flug tore the top of the picture off, removing all of their faces.
    • It is theorized that his brother is a hero, more specifically Goldheart, but Alan has not confirmed this.
  • Dr Flug committed 82,602 crimes, including falsification and identity theft, and plane stealing.
    • In one of the Villainous Comics, Flug traveled to Gotham City to steal kryptonite for Black Hat, impersonating the Scarecrow in an attempt to fool Batman.

5.0.5.

  • 5.0.5. is immortal, much to Black Hat's dismay. Even if his entire body is destroyed, he will be reborn as a baby.
    • Black Hat tolerates 5.0.5. living in the mansion because his invincibility makes him an ideal stress relief toy.
  • 5.0.5's birthday is on January 1st, making him a New Year Baby.
    • He is five years old in bear years, and has lived with Black Hat Organization for two years.
    • Since the series is set in 2019, 5.0.5 must have been created in 2017.
    • Like Penumbra, 5.0.5's zodiac sign is Capricorn.
  • 5.0.5.'s first and last word was calling Black Hat "dad".
    • It is unknown how or why he cannot speak anymore.
    • He seems to say "Four!" in Q&A Black Hat Organization replies and "Copy That!" in The Dreadful Dawn, but this may be a way to help audience to understand what's going on.
      • Black Hat could also mean it was the last word 5.0.5. ever spoke to him personally, or the last word he ever spoke properly, as his other words are spoken in a growly animal voice.
  • 5.0.5. is not entirely a bear, although he was made with bear DNA and closely resembles one. The other components used to create him have not yet been revealed.
    • Some theorize that Black Hat's DNA was also used in the making of 5.0.5., which would, in a way, make Black Hat his biological father. This could help explain why 5.0.5. is immortal, and why he originally called Black Hat "dad".
  • 5.0.5.'s flower is connected to his emotional and physical state.
    • The flower is in full bloom when he is happy and awake, and wilts when he is upset or hurt.
    • When 5.0.5. sleeps, his flower closes.
    • It can be plucked out, but it is upsetting and painful for him. Unfortunately Demencia loves to pick his flower, even using it to play "He loves me, He loves me not" in one of the Villainous Comics.
      • The flower will grow back, and is nurtured by love and affection rather than water and sunlight.
    • The roots of his flower grow throughout his whole body and resemble a nervous system.
    • Ever the optimist, 5.0.5. loves pollinator bugs because he thinks they love him back. In reality, they just want his nectar.
      • It's a rare that a bug actually gets the chance to pollinate his flower, because Demencia likes to eat them and the hatbots like to shoot them.
  • 5.0.5. loves to bake and fulfills orders for baked goods the Organization receives.
    • He bakes with honey made from his flower. Given that it's uncommon for a bug to pollinate his flower without dying, we can assume the resulting honey is also hard to come by.
  • 5.0.5. would never intentionally hurt anyone. However, his strength is immense when properly channeled.
    • Dr. Flug witnessed 5.0.5. lifting a 1,850 kilogram (4,079 pound) car to pet a cat underneath. Following this, Flug decided to test his strength in different situations.
      • 5.0.5. can control his strength when he is trying to be careful, or protect something. He didn't break an egg Flug gave him to hold.
      • However, 5.0.5. was coaxed into hugging a metal bar when Flug attached a smiley-face to it, bending it dramatically. 5.0.5.'s bone-crushing embraces are literal bear-hugs.
  • According to Dr. Flug, apparently 5.0.5. makes reaction videos. This is a reference to his voice actor Mark Fischbach, also known as Markiplier on the video-sharing platform YouTube. One such video is shown in Q&A Black Hat Organization replies, where we see 5.0.5. uses acoustic studio panels much like Markiplier.
  • The Dreadful Dawn reveals that 5.0.5. sleeps on Dr. Flug's plane that crashed in Black Hat's manor.
  • His name is a pun on the Spanish word for "Bear", "Oso", since "Oso" could also be written as "0.5.0.".
  • The Dreadful Dawn reveals that 5.0.5 considers Demencia his sister.
  • He bears a resemblance to The Creature from Samurai Jack. This is directly addressed in BH's Bizarre Bad-Venture.
  • In one of the Villainous Comics, 5.0.5. went to a mission to Gotham City disguised as Bane in order to fool Batman.
    • Out of the three members of the team, 5.0.5. is the only member whose costume's design is based on a movie and not the comics.
  • In The Heedeous Heart, Demencia bites 5.0.5. and claims he tastes like cotton candy.
  • In Alan Ituriel's initial design, 5.0.5. was very small and did not have a flower on his head.
  • When asked about experiments 1 through 5.0.4., Alan stated that, while no one knows exactly what happened to them, Flug's track record with experiments seems to indicate they met with a bad fate.

Demencia

  • In "The Perception of Evil" and "Guide for an Evil Conquest", a blueprint for what seems to be Demencia appears in the lab, suggesting she was created and/or experimented on by Dr. Flug and/or Black Hat.
    • Further proving this, in the pilot episode, Demencia can be seen inside a glass case, which she breaks out of.
  • She is likely named after the mental illness of the same name, demencia, known in English as dementia.
  • She makes no appearances in any of the webisodes.
    • This isn't because her design hadn't been thought of yet, but simply her design wasn't fully created yet.
  • Her favorite song is "Revolution 9" by the Beatles.
    • Strangely, this particular song contains the famous "turn me on dead man" clue to the "Paul is dead" conspiracy.
    • It should also be noted Revolution 9's technically quoted to be a "sound collage", and it entirely consist of random soundbites and tones. Demencia choosing this as her favorite "song" is likely a reference to her insanity.
  • She's a fan of Happy Tree Friends.
  • Demencia's birthday is on April 1st
    • Demencia's zodiac sign is Aries.
  • She doesn't like taking baths.
  • She appears to be uncomfortable with questions about her origins, as seen in the Villainous Q&A.
    • Just before the question, Demencia is smiling and relaxed and seen putting her feet on the table to read a magazine. Dr. Flug makes the comment, in which Demencia is now shown sitting normally, now with a disgusted expression on her face, hiding behind the magazine.
  • In one of the Villainous Comics, she travels to Gotham City and disguises herself as Harley Quinn in order to fool Batman.
    • Her relationship with Black Hat is pretty similar to Harley's relationship with the Joker in older depictions of the character.
